ST. LOUIS’ RICH HISTORY AND BREATHTAKING ARCHITECTURE by Debbie Wheeler
On the cover of this month’s Active Lifestyles Magazine is contributing writer and St. Louis Historian, NiNi Harris, seen standing in front of Circuit Courtroom #4 of the majestic Old Courthouse Downtown. This well known, architectural landmark was the site for two nationally significant and historic court cases heard in St. Louis in the 1800’s. In 1846 Dred Scott sued for his and his wife’s freedom from slavery, and in 1872, suffragette, Virginia Minor’s case for woman’s right to vote went to trial. Both cases were eventually appealed to the United States Supreme Court. While the grand architecture of St. Louis’ Old Courthouse provides a backdrop which speaks of the seriousness of the law, as well as the precedents of ancient Greece and Rome upon which our laws were founded, in the Virginia Minor case, as well as in the appeals of the Dred Scott case, the judicial system failed to
protect the rights of ordinary citizens. Thus, the building’s architecture forms an ironic counterpoint to the events which sometimes unfolded within its courtrooms. Recently, naturalization ceremonies have been held in the rotunda, during which visitors have witnessed the inspiring sight of hundreds of immigrants, from countries all over the world, being given the opportunity to enjoy the full privileges and immunities of United States citizenship, won due to the sacrifice and perseverance of people like Dred Scott and Virginia Minor. The example they set in small, seemingly unimportant cases in St. Louis, led to momentous events which changed our country forever. -National Parks Service NiNi Harris is a St. Louis Historian and author of various books on the rich history and breathtaking architecture of our beloved Gateway City. She spends hours upon hours
relentlessly digging through literally thousands of archives uncovering intriguing bits and pieces of facts that make up the back stories of St. Louis’ colorful history. In NiNi’s most recent book, Downtown St. Louis, she traces the evolution of Downtown St. Louis from the original French settlement to the post-modern architecture. She describes commerce from the days when only flatboats connected St. Louis to the other frontier settlements, to the celebrations in the streets at the news that Japan had surrendered. Downtown and other books NiNi has authored can be found at any of the many bookstores in the metro area. Besides writing several books on St. Louis, you can also find NiNi’s column, Historically Speaking… every month right here in Active Lifestyles Magazine. Unitil next month... Be Well, Be Active, and Live Life to its fullest my friends. St. Louis Lifestyles ARE…better after 50!

The Year of The Volunteer IMPACTING THE LIVES OF IMMIGRANTS & REFUGEES by Pat Joshu
“I feel like a school girl again!” When meeting her new volunteer English teacher, excitement radiated from Rafeda, a Syrian refugee new to Saint Louis. Her teacher shared in this joy as Rafeda reflected on the reverence placed upon teachers in her home country, and as plans were being made by the two new friends to start their classes together. For isolated immigrants and refugees in our community who face barriers to joining group English classes, connecting with a volunteer who can teach at the student’s home opens a whole new world. While the Immigrant & Refugee Women’s Program (IRWP) has been making these connections for over two decades, 2017 is already one of the most thrilling years yet! Individuals in our city and nearby areas
have stepped up in record numbers to connect with those new to our country and help them learn English and practical living skills in their homes. These volunteer teachers provide the gift of friendship, independence, and education for individuals who would otherwise lack the opportunity to learn and connect. As of March 23, two hundred and seventeen students have already participated in IRWP; exceeding the total number served in all of 2016. While this volunteer program gives more students the chance to learn needed communication and literacy skills, it also means that more people are sharing these student’s rich cultures and becoming friends. Books, materials, training, and support are provided to these volunteers and students through the
program. Another new student that started this year recently visited the IRWP office with her teenage son. He was eager to share that between classes he and his mom had been doing lots of extra work in the phonics book provided by IRWP, and that she had already learned the full alphabet in her first few weeks of class. Besides spending time serving as volunteers, groups and individuals have rallied to support the program and show their love in other ways – from supply drives to donations of handmade cards welcoming newcomers to town. To learn more about ways that you can directly impact the lives of immigrants and refugees in the St. Louis area, call IRWP at (314) 7711104.

THINGS MATURE WOMEN SHOULD KNOW ABOUT HAIR Scott Gardner, The Hair Whisperer
few layers will lighten up your hair and make it appear more modern and healthy.
I believe the secret to looking good at any age is to feel comfortable in your own skin and to find styles that flatter your best attributes and play down the worst ones. Long Hair on Mature Women Long hair on older women can look amazing. The secret to long hair is proper upkeep and a good haircut. Split, frizzy ends on anyone of any age looks bad. Long hair looks best when it’s not too heavy on the bottom, creating a “Christmas tree” shape from behind. A
Embrace Your Natural Hair Texture Women these days spend an extraordinary amount of money trying to change their hair texture to something it’s not. They straighten their naturally curly hair with potentially dangerous chemicals, they add volume to their flat, fine hair, with extensions that can damage the flat, fine hair they were born with and they curl and flat-iron and get perms all in the name of, well changing themselves. One of the greatest lessons in life that many men and women don’t learn until they have a few years behind them, is that to be truly happy, you must accept yourself for who you are. Now this does not mean going completely gray, if you hate the idea of being gray. Go ahead, color your hair if it makes you feel better. Gray hair is not for everyone. But curly hair, fine hair, every hair texture out there can look good with the right haircut. So maybe it’s time to stop fighting your hair’s texture and embrace it. Just get the right cut.
That Hairstyle You Had at 30 May Not Be Flattering at 50 So many of us still have the hairstyles we wore 20 years ago because once we find something that works for us, we like to stick with it. Unfortunately, that hairstyle you had at 30 may not be working as well for you at age 50. Some styles are ageless and timeless, a shoulder-length haircut with light layers for example, or a classic bob, but many women can get stuck in a style rut wearing a cut that was fine in 1990, but just doesn’t work as well in 2017. So how to tell if you are stuck in a style rut? Here are some suggestions. • Is your haircut trendy or classic? If it’s trendy, you need to be someone who keeps up with trends, otherwise the world will carry to new ones and you will be stuck in a time warp. • Do you give much thought at all to your hair? If you are casual and don’t like to bother with hairstyling, you may be hiding your hair in ponytails and avoiding salon visits. Chances are you’re stuck in a style rut. • If you haven’t tried a new look in a few
years, you might be stuck in a style rut. Play Up Your Good Features, Play Down Your Bad Ones If you think it’s time for a new or updated hairstyle, consider playing up your good features while camouflaging your not-so-good ones. For example, if you get compliments on your eyes, you can play them up with side sweeping bangs, fringe bangs or layers that start at the eye. You can hide a large forehead or one with lots of wrinkles with bangs as well. Play down a wrinkly neck with shoulder-length hair. Show off an angled chin with a bob, camouflage a weak chin with a long bob. This is PART TWO of a FOUR PART Series of Scott Gardner’s “Hair Whisperer” seen every month exclusively in Active Lifestyles Magazine. See Part Three in May’s Issue! IT’S MORE THAN JUST A FARM STORE by Jeff LaCroix
It’s more than just a farm store, and it’s more than simply selling merchandise. If you ask Adam Bowles, President of Farm and Home Supply, it’s all about “Outfitting Your Lifestyle.” This marketing concept is building momentum as Farm and Home Supply opens their newest retail store in Cottleville, Missouri during April of 2017. “Farm and Home Supply tends to surprise shoppers when they first come into our store,” said Bowles. “Although the farm trade is still a vital part of our business mix, people are surprised to see an extensive selection of sporting goods, hunting and fishing supplies including firearms, expanded pet care selections, lawn and garden supplies…even a huge family clothing department with a denim jeans selection second to none. We really do have something for your lifestyle, with a focus on the outdoors.” “In addition, exceptional customer service has been the very core of our business for almost 57 years, starting with our first family owned store in Quincy Illinois in 1960. In today’s retail environment, it is
what truly sets us apart.” Our newest store will be located at 5991 Mid Rivers Mall Drive and will be open 7:30am to 8:00pm Monday through Saturday, and 9am to 6pm on Sundays. Come on by and see what’s IN STORE for you!

EATING RIGHT WITH LESS ADDED SUGARS
Sugar is found naturally in some foods and drinks, like fruit and milk, but it is also added to many of them. Added sugars give these items a sweet taste. Most Americans get too many calories from added sugars and over time this may affect their weight and health. Many people think of desserts as the main source of added sugars, but
there are many foods and drinks that contain them. For example, sweetened drinks like regular soft drinks, some fruit drinks, and energy drinks are all sources of added sugars. Snack foods, like crackers, and even ready-to-eat foods, like pizza and pasta sauces, can be made with added sugars. People may also add sugar to what they eat and drink, like sprinkling sugar over cereal or pouring flavored creamer in coffee. Soon you’ll be able to determine the amount of added sugars by looking at the Nutrition Facts label. For right now, the best place to find this information is in the ingredients list. The ingredients that appear first are in the largest amount. Be sure to look for foods and drinks that don’t have sugar (or some other sweetener) listed as the first ingredient. Other examples of sweeteners and sources of added sugars include: brown sugar, corn syrup, dextrose, fructose, high-fructose corn syrup, honey, maple syrup, molasses, sucrose, white granulated sugar. But there are others, too. Sources of added sugars often lack nutrients we need for good health. Whereas foods and drinks that contain natural sources of sugar provide nutrients, like vitamins and minerals. For example,
fruits like strawberries are a great source of vitamin C, and milk provides vitamins A and D and calcium. It’s not necessary to avoid all sources of added sugars. The problem is that many of us include too many sources of added sugars or eat and drink larger amounts than is recommended. When this happens there is less room for more nutritious foods and drinks. So in the future, if you have a taste for something sweet try eating some fruit first. When you’re thirsty reach for milk or water. Other ways to reduce sources of added sugars include: making or buying healthier versions of baked goods, including foods and drinks with added sugars less often, and eating or drinking smaller amounts.
Tips on how to reduce sources of added sugars • Sweeten low-fat plain yogurt with fresh, frozen, or canned (in its own juice) fruit in place of fruit-flavored yogurt. • Add cinnamon and dried fruit to plain cooked oats instead of using instant flavored oatmeal. • Substitute 100% fruit juice for fruit punch and other fruit-flavored drinks. • Switch from sweetened to unsweetened applesauce.

Exploring Amazing Oregon
Visiting Oregon is magical! It is like no other place in America and features amazing landscapes, cultures and a vibe “all its own”. Oregon is naturally stunning. The state’s unpopulated and rugged coastline features cliffs on the mainland and jutting stone outcrops just offshore. But if you’re looking for a beach, not to worry, Oregon boasts miles of long sandy beaches perfect for relaxing. Visitors enjoy getting up-close and personal with sea life including sealions and otters. In the fall, many visit the rivers leading into
the Pacific Ocean and get a glimpse of the salmon spawning. Central Oregon features amazing backdrops of mountains and volcanic peaks, painted desert panoramas and rich agricultural lands. Oregon’s soil produces rich fruits and vegetables… many being organically grown. Not to mention, Oregon’s amazing cattle farms. The state has become a dairy mecca turning out rich milk and cheeses. The cities of Oregon are truly unique in every form. Built on history and culture, each city has a feel all its own. Portland is the largest city of Oregon and is located on the north border of the state near the Columbia River Valley. The city is known as the “Rose City” because of temperate year-round temperatures, Portland produces brilliant foliage and fauna. The city’s amazing Rose Test Gardens in Washington Park is a must see!
Willamette Valley and National Forest to the south are pristine for nature lovers. Here the earth is “undisturbed” and the varied landscape of high mountains, narrow canyons, cascading streams, and wooded slopes are picture perfect. Douglas-fir, the State tree of Oregon, is one of the largest trees in America and is found alongside old growth Redwoods creating an amazing natural canopy protecting the forest below.
By Tod DeHart Oregon is home to more waterfalls than any other state. Large to small, from north to south, the state’s wild waters are a sight to behold. The state also is home to Carter Lake National Park. Crater Lake is the deepest lake in the country and it is the largest volcano formed lake in North America. Peaceful crystal blue water makes the lake even more stunning. I invite you to join me and DIRECTIONS Tours this June to experience Oregon… It just happens to be my favorite state and for so many reasons! DIRECTIONS Tours OREGON EXPLORER Tour departs on June 11-17, 2017 - see full itinerary and details inside this Explore Section!

Live Happier and Healthier with Travel hand in hand. When leaving home (or work) and adventuring away from “the norm”, we leave our day to day lives and responsibilities far behind. This allows our bodies to reset our biological body clock and synchronizes it with the earth around us. Notably, studies have shown decreased stress levels in people who travel. Reducing the amount of stress over just one week away on a trip, travelers registered lower levels of stress hormones in their saliva.
Travel is proven to be one of the best ways to make your life healthier, happier, stronger and more fullfilled. Actual studies have proven that travel increases well-being, learning experiences, decreases stress levels, and creates memories of a lifetime. In addition, traveling builds stronger relationships, new friendships and connects people to new ideas and cultures. Vacation and relaxation go
It is common knowledge that travel brings people together and builds new and everlasting relationships.
Whether you travel alone, with family, or with friends, a vacation get-away improves and forms relationships and friendships. In my 21 years of travel experience, I have taken joy and pleasure in seeing so many new relationships form and grow while adventuring out. One of my greatest joys is introducing single travelers to new people, which ultimately become lifelong friendships.
Because of this, I decided to create a more affordable pricing package for single travelers with DIRECTIONS Tours! When traveling as a single, one must pay more money in most cases (due to not spliting hotel costs with a traveling companion / spouse). This
leads to higher single supplemental costs and deters many people from traveling alone. So... I went to work with our vendors and negotiated better rates for our single guests. Now, when traveling with DIRECTIONS Tours, single travelers will enjoy our great trips at the same rates of doubles or just a little more. I am proud to say that we are the ONLY travel company in our region that offers this discount program for single travelers! (see details on next page) Worried about traveling alone? Rest assured, you are never “alone” when you are our guests! There are so many great places to explore this year and DIRECTIONS Tours is a great place to start your vacation planning!

(314) 577-0077 National Read a Road Map Day April 5, 2017 Read a Road Map Day, a fun, national observance date associated with the use of this lost art is coming up on April 5. What a great way to sharpen our skills of navigation should our Global Positioning Systems (GPS’), smartphone apps, or other technical devices that get us to the most remote destinations, fail. Heaven forbid… Before today’s satellite technology, road maps were once the only way to navigate from one destination to another. Have you ever been driving through a remote area where you lose your signal? How about when your phone goes dead
and you don’t have your charger with you? Having and knowing how to navigate using yesterday’s technology or paper maps as they are known is an art everyone should know so you are not left scrambling for directions in these events. These guides which show everything from cites and their suburbs, to atlases covering major highways and interstates of the United States can still be found at many gas stations, state-sponsored rest areas, and truck stops, sometimes even for free. Remember, road maps need to be current to be helpful. If a map is more than a couple of years old, toss
it. Roadwork is a constant process and chances are good that there have been changes or additions since that map was printed. If you know how to read a road map, share that knowledge with your kids or grandkids. Plan a road trip with them and map out your directions. Show them how to scale the distance to your destination and where landmarks are noted. They will have fun learning this valuable art of navigation and enjoy one on one time with you at the same time. Happy Mapping St. Louis!!!
PLAN FOR HEALTH CARE COSTS DURING RETIREMENT Jeff Ponte, Edward Jones Advisor
• A 65-year-old couple who retired in 2016 will need about $288,000 (in today’s dollars) during retirement just to pay Medicare Parts B, D and supplemental insurance, according to HealthView Services, a company that provides health care cost projections for financial services firms. If out-of-pocket costs such as deductibles, co-pays, hearing, vision and dental are included, the lifetime figure rises to about $377,000 in today’s dollars.
When you retire, some of your expenses may go down – but health care is not likely to be one of them. In fact, your health care costs during retirement may well increase, so you may want to plan for these costs well before you leave the work force. How much can you expect to spend on health care during your retirement years? Consider these statistics:
• The national average for a private room in a nursing home is more than $92,000 per year, according to a survey by Genworth, an insurance company. And the services of a home health aide cost more than $45,000 per year, according to the same survey. Medicare typically pays very little of these costs. To cope with these expenses, you’ll want to integrate them into your overall retirement saving and investing strategies. Knowing the size of a potential health care burden may help motivate you to put as much as you can afford into your
401(k), IRA and other retirement accounts. Even when you’re retired, part of your portfolio should be devoted to growthoriented investments, such as stocks, to help pay for rising health care costs. It’s true that stocks will always fluctuate, and you don’t want to be forced to sell them when their price is down. However, you can help yourself avoid this problem by also owning a good mix of other investments, such as investment-grade corporate bonds, government securities and certificates of deposit (CDs), whose value may be more stable than that of stocks. Another way to help defray the costs of health care is to work part-time a few years after you had originally planned to retire. This added income can help you delay tapping into your IRA and 401(k), thus giving these accounts a chance to potentially grow further. Plus, you may be able to put off taking Social Security, and the longer you wait until you start collecting benefits, the bigger your checks will be, at least until they top out at age 70. These suggestions may help you meet many of your typical medical costs
during retirement, but what about long-term care expenses, such as an extended stay in a nursing home or the need for home health care assistance? As mentioned above, these costs can be enormous. Fortunately, the financial marketplace does provide some cost-effective solutions for long-term care – solutions that may help you avoid “self-insuring.” A financial professional can provide you with some recommendations in this area. It’s probably unavoidable that your health care costs will rise, and possibly keep rising, when you’re retired. But by being aware of these expenses years in advance, and by following a diligent saving and investment strategy – one that may also include a long-term care component – you can improve your “financial fitness” for dealing with health care costs. On a tour of the Carondelet Neighborhood of South St. Louis City, I will have the pleasure of showing off one of my favorite historic sites to participants with DIRECTIONS Tours. It is the charming, restored kindergarten classroom where a revolution in American education began in 1873. The classroom – with its low, oak tables lined with wood and iron benches for pint-sized children – is in the old Des Peres School. (For years the school building has been home to the area Carondelet Historical Society.) Kindergarten projects from more than a century ago are displayed on the tables. The huge windows, with their wood shutters open, shower sunlight in the room as they did in the fall of 1873, when the doors first opened. The kindergarten held in this joyous classroom was an experiment in education. It occurred when the very concept of public education for the masses was still a new concept. School in the 19th century was seldom a pleasant experience. The children sat in rows and learned by rote, almost like a factory. A Carondelet girl, Susan Blow, had traveled with her father to Europe and observed a kindergarten in Germany. German educator Friedrich Froebel had developed the concept of kindergarten, which is German for children’s garden. Susan was well-connected in St. Louis through her father Henry T. Blow, a successful businessman and former Congressman. In an era when women were not equal, she was recognized for her smarts. Through her study of German philosophy, she was in study circles with the remarkable St. Louis School superintendent, William Torrey Harris. She proposed the idea to him of conducting an experimental kindergarten like the one she had seen in Germany. Her kindergarten, which grew into a city-wide program, introduced children to the joy of learning. They learned through song, and little dances. They delighted in the story-telling. They developed dexterity and came to understand rhythm and patterns through
paperweaving. They learned shapes through playing with building blocks. They learned colors playing with knitted yarn balls of a variety of colors. In St. Louis, where over half the children entering school were from immigrant families, kindergarten introduced them to the English language. This was critical to them learning to read and write the next year. Susan Blow’s kindergarten changed education, not just in St. Louis. She trained teachers who helped spread the kindergarten movement across the nation. In July, as part of our Carondelet tour, we will visit that kindergarten. The Carondelet Historical Society has painstakingly restored it so that it looks just as it did when the doors first opened in the fall of 1873. St. Louis McDonnell and Douglas Merger April 1967 The McDonnell Aircraft Corporation was an American aerospace manufacturer based in St. Louis, Missouri. The company was founded in 1939 by James Smith McDonnell and was best known for its military fighters, including the F-4 Phantom II, and manned spacecraft including the Mercury capsule and Gemini capsule. Douglas Aircraft Company, also an American aerospace manufacturer was founded in 1921 by Donald Wills Douglas, Sr. and based in Southern California. Douglas Aircraft Company successfully designed and built a wide variety of aircraft for the U.S. military as well as commercial jets like the well-known DC-8. McDonnell Aircraft Corporation and Douglas Aircraft Company began thoughts of a merger of their aerospace companies in 1963 and official bid invitations began between the two
manufacturers in 1966. The firms finally came to agreement and merged on April 28,1967 becoming the McDonnell Douglas Corporation (MDC), a major U.S. producer of jet fighters, commercial aircraft, and space vehicles. The Douglas logo which originally showed aircraft circling a globe and eventually evolved into an aircraft, a rocket, and a globe was adopted by the McDonnell Douglas Corporation and later became the basis of the current logo of the Boeing Company after their merger with MDC in 1997. The corporation was based at Lambert– St. Louis International Airport near St. Louis. From April,1967 to August, 1997, McDonnell Douglas produced a number of well-known commercial and military aircraft such as the DC-10 airliner and F-15 Eagle air-superiority fighter. Bonnie
Lillie Rae
I’m Bonnie, a beautiful yellow lab mix weighing in at 40 pounds and about 2 years old. I am crate trained and potty trained. I like other dogs, but sometimes I just get a little excited and try to dominate another dog, but my foster family continues to correct me. Since I am a little shy, I like people after I get to know them. I am very affectionate and I just want to be loved.
I’m Lillie Rae, a Beagle Basset Mix about 9-1/2 years old. They consider me a ‘senior’ dog, but I still have the energy of a younger pup! I am always very friendly and like dogs and kids, but I become a little possessive of a person’s lap and want to be the only one there. I love to follow you around and just be with my family. I do not like to be crated and as long as you put all the food away out of my reach, I am fine just being left in the house while you are gone.
Cash
Lularoe
I’m Cash, a 4 yr old boxer pit bull mix. I like other dogs and kids, but since I am pretty strong, I think they should be older kids. I am housebroken and crate trained, but my foster mom says I am so good I would probably not need to be crated. I am looking for a family with a nice fenced-in yard. I do like car rides too. Please ask to meet me and I know it would be love at first sight!

Hello furry friends! My name is Willow and I am a canine amateur advisor. What qualifies me, you ask? I have been homeless, lived in a shelter, survived heartworm disease, and stayed in a foster home. I have overcome! In my neighborhood I am known for barking sound, compassionate advice in a high-spirited style. Please send me your questions, concerns or comments to meAfter all my advice is free; it won’t even cost you a treat. Woof!
I’m Lularoe, a one year old, 62 pound, beautiful Shepherd mix. I love everything and everyone! I am timid at first but once I know you, I will love you... including kids! My foster mom helps me with the command sit and continues to enforce training and help me build up my confidence. I am potty trained and crate trained. Everyone says I have the softest fur and they love my ears when they stand straight up. I really enjoy playing with the other dogs at my foster home. They say I am a typical puppy and so they want me to continue training with my new family to learn the rules.

askwillow@activelifestylesmag.com Dear Willow, I desperately want to sleep in my mommy’s bed! It’s a big comfy bed with lots and lots of room, but instead she puts me in a cold metal crate with a lame blanket. How can I get in that bed? Forever an Insomniac, Bella Dear Bella, I feel you. I used to sleep in a crate every night but now I sleep with my mommy and daddy. It’s time for you to start whining after you’ve been put in the crate. Whine ever so sadly until your mommy comes. If she has to work in the morning she will not want to deal with your whining, she will, more than likely let you in her bed. You could also start straight up barking if whining doesn’t work. When you get in that warm bed, be sure and cozy up nice and snug to mommy, you know, the obedient and quiet Bella. I’m guessing that within a week, you will be the “Bed Boss.”
