Cardio Groove That Is... “The glow and energy of the healthy woman is the ultimate beauty, the only beauty that will last.” Jane Fonda There really is a work out called Cardio Groove and it does indeed get the old ticker pumping. Cardio Groove is an aerobic type exercise that focuses on providing a great workout while having fun dancing to various styles of choreography such as hip hop, Latin, jazz and many others. This low impact method of exercise utilizes upper and lower body muscles and everything in between. The classes are designed for all levels of dancers and fitness enthusiasts during a session where there are no age or gender boundaries. I recently sat in on one of the Cardio Groove workouts at JCC Jewish Community Center “the J” in Creve Coeur and was amazed at the endurance of the group I was watching. Out of a dozen plus people in the class, at least half were over the age of 50 and two that I was aware of, over the age of 85. They moved to the groove, with amazing agility, following the motions and directives of the instructor. Just their warm-up

by Debbie Wheeler

alone was 30 minutes, stretching and working from the upper to lower body, all within their comfort zone, from beginner to expert level. What drew me to this workout session were Dee and Gloria Schonbrun, Active Lifestyle’s June cover models who work out 4 days a week at the athletic complex of the J in Creve Coeur, and one of their classes is Cardio Groove! Gloria, owner of Schonbrun Realtors in St. Louis, and an exercise enthusiast, emailed me this past December about her motherin law, Dee, a 50-years plus package of workout-dy-no-mite who had just moved here from Chicago. Gloria wrote that Dee, who was about to turn 87-years young, appeared to be more the age of a 65year old. She said her mother-in-law who is very fashion savvy, wearing tight jeans, and even 4- inch high heels, looks and acts like Jane Fonda! Boy, was Gloria right, she does! Dee’s secret: she exercises often and eats healthy foods. Raised in Peoria, Dee did not start seriously working out until she was 40 and at the age of 50, she ran in her first 5-K. She continued to run well into her 70’s and now sticks with a daily exercise regimen. Dee tells

me she gets at least 8 hours of sleep a night, takes no meds, just vitamins, and eats a healthy diet consisting of fiber, fruit, vegetables and fish. “Arthur” however, does come to call every now and again, but according to Dee, if she works out and eats healthy, it doesn’t really bother her. “Working out makes me happy” she explains. Not only do Dee and Gloria exercise at the J four days a week, but Gloria, who is fabulously over 50, also walks several times a week. What an amazing cardio duo this mother and daughter-in-law are! Physical inactivity is a primary factor, especially for those over the age of 50, in the growing number of persons with chronic illnesses and disabilities. So, take a good look at yourself… Are you spending each day kicked back in your recliner, channel surfing or binge-watching a variety of TV shows? Or, perhaps you are just sitting in your favorite rocking chair, eating potato chips and cookies, daydreaming and doing absolutely nothing. In a research article by the Mayo clinic “Sedentary Behavior: Emerging Evidence for a New Health Risk”, US adults spend about 70% of their waking hours sitting, 30% in

THE SUMMER OF HAIR

Scott Gardner, The Hair Whisperer Summer is the season for sun exposure, salt water, and chlorine chemical residues, and not to mention a few extra chemical “sun” streaks for style that can come together and wreak havoc on our tresses. By the end of the summer, your hair can be so dehydrated it looks and feels nearly fried. From a technical standpoint, there’s a protective coating on hair called the hydrolipidic film; if you have dry hair, that film is broken down somewhat anyway, when you color it, it breaks down a little more, but when you ad sun, salt water, and chlorine, you can destroy the film altogether. The end result is that moisture located deep in the core of the hair shaft evaporates and in what seems like one “poof” your “Pouf” can be gone. That means hair not only has a dry look and feel, but can also be frizzy, unmanageable, have problems holding curl or style, and even take longer to dry. In its worst form damage causes the ends of the hair to split, and breakage can begin. When hair dehydrates it becomes brittle and when it becomes brittle you get the broken split ends that go up the hair shaft and causes fuzziness and frizziness and sometimes breakage; it’s a cumulative process. Like skin, hair is comprised of

proteins that need moisture to function. But unlike skin which has its own supply of moisture from within, hair is dead, so once the moisture is gone, it’s gone. Problems are further complicated if we lighten or streak our hair. That’s because our natural supply of oil resides in the pigment. Remove the color and you strip out the oils. This leaves the hair wide open to the environment, so not only are you pulling out the oils, which dries the hair, but you are making it more vulnerable to the elements, which can cause even more dryness and eventually damage. Undoing the Damage While damaging hair can come easy, repair can be frustratingly hard. The reason may be because many of us turn to styling aids, such as mousses and gels to force our damaged tresses to do what we want. And that is a big mistake. If you are having problems with your hair, it’s frizzy or won’t hold a curl or style, it’s natural to reach for more styling aids. But when hair is damaged, these products can make it look and feel worse. Instead begin at the beginning, by first replenishing hair with a salonquality moisturizing shampoo and rinseout conditioner like Gen-Tecs Volumizing Glycolic Shampoo and Gen-Tecs Volumizing Glycolic Conditioner. But

don’t consider yourself “finished” before adding a leave-in conditioner like, Pro/ Gen Hydrating Leave-In Conditioner as well. Rinse-out conditioners do not deposit any protection on the hair, in fact, if you leave any residue on your hair it can react with the elements and cause even more damage. Conversely, coating hair with a leave-on conditioner, products that are usually sprayed on after washing or styling take protection and manageability to a whole new level. The Way You Do the Things You Do When it comes to styling your hair, what you use, in terms of tools, as well as how you use them also matters. The golden rule of thumb: The more damaged your hair, the heat you should apply. The hotter the tool, the more you can damage your hair, since heat forces the cuticle to split open. If you want to blow dry, use the medium or cool setting to keep the outside layer as smooth as possible. Heated rollers, and curling and flat irons can do equal damage. If you find your hair is taking longer to curl, or won’t hold your style for very long, then it’s a clear sign you are using too much heat. If you must set your style, mesh rollers are best, and always use end papers to protect the hair. Rollers to avoid,

are the self-stick loop-and-tape variety, which increase the risk of breakage. What can be great for hair, damaged or not, is vigorous brushing, particularly with a natural bristle brush. While any kind of hairbrush will help distribute oils from the scalp to the ends where it’s most needed, those with natural bristles can grab the oils more effectively and distribute them faster and easier. A lot of women avoid vigorous brushing because they fear hair loss, but actually brushing can be good as it helps stimulate the scalp. If your scalp is also dry, you can still brush, just do it more gently and use a brush with soft bristles. While there’s no question that you can make even the most damaged hair look and feel better, for many women the real answer is a great haircut, particularly if your hair has suffered heavy summer wear and tear. Here are a few tips for protecting your hair this summer: Rinse your hair as soon as it is exposed to salt water or chlorine, avoid direct sunlight on your hair, and use leave-in conditioners, shampoos, and styling aids with sun protection whenever you are outdoors. Don’t let summer keep you from having the best hair ever, follow these simple tips and your hair will be ready for whatever the occasion.

Explore Oregon This June

Visiting Oregon is magical! It is like no other place in America and features amazing landscapes, cultures and a vibe “all its own”. Oregon is naturally stunning. The state’s unpopulated and rugged coastline features cliffs on the mainland and jutting stone outcrops just offshore. But if you’re looking for a beach, not to worry, Oregon boasts miles of long sandy beaches perfect for relaxing. Visitors enjoy getting up-close and personal with sea life including sealions and otters. In the fall, many visit the rivers leading into the Pacific Ocean and get a glimpse of

the salmon spawning. Central Oregon features amazing backdrops of mountains and volcanic peaks, painted desert panoramas and rich agricultural lands. Oregon’s soil produces rich fruits and vegetables… many being organically grown. Not to mention, Oregon’s amazing cattle farms. The state has become a dairy mecca turning out rich milk and cheeses. The cities of Oregon are truly unique in every form. Built on history and culture, each city has a feel all its own. Portland is the largest city of Oregon and is located on the north border of the state near the Columbia River Valley. The city is known as the “Rose City” because of temperate year-round temperatures, Portland produces brilliant foliage and fauna. The city’s amazing Rose Test Gardens in Washington Park is a must see! Willamette Valley and National Forest to the south are pristine for nature

lovers. Here the earth is “undisturbed” and the varied landscape of high mountains, narrow canyons, cascading streams, and wooded slopes are picture perfect. Douglas-fir, the State tree of Oregon, is one of the largest trees in America and is found alongside old growth Redwoods creating an amazing natural canopy protecting the forest below.

By Tod DeHart waters are a sight to behold. The state also is home to Carter Lake National Park. Crater Lake is the deepest lake in the country and it is the largest volcano formed lake in North America. Peaceful crystal blue water makes the lake even more stunning. I invite you to join me and DIRECTIONS Tours this June to experience Oregon… It just happens to be my favorite state and for so many reasons! LIFE INSURANCE NEEDS WILL CHANGE OVER TIME… SO BE PREPARED Jeff Ponte, Edward Jones Advisor

If you’re going to achieve all your goals, such as sending your kids to college, retiring in comfort and leaving a legacy, you will need to save and invest throughout your lifetime. But to really complete your financial picture, you’ll also need to add one more element: protection. And that means you’ll require adequate life insurance for your situation. However, your need for insurance will vary at different times of your life - so you’ll want to recognize these changing needs and be prepared to act. When you’re a young adult, and you’re single, life insurance will probably not be that big of a priority. And even married couples without children typically have little need for life insurance; if both spouses contribute equally to household finances, and you don’t own a home, the death of one spouse will generally not be financially catastrophic for the other. But once you buy a home, things change. Even if you and your spouse are both working, the financial burden of a mortgage may be too much for the surviving spouse. So, to enable the survivor to continue living in the home,

you might consider purchasing enough life insurance to at least cover the mortgage. When you have children, your life insurance needs will typically increase greatly. In fact, it’s a good idea for both parents to carry enough life insurance to pay off a mortgage and raise and educate the children, because the surviving parent’s income may be insufficient for these needs. How much insurance do you need? You might hear of a “formula,” such as buying an amount equal to seven to ten times your annual income, but this is a rough guideline, at best. You might want to work with a financial professional to weigh various factors – number and ages of children, size of mortgage, current income of you and your spouse, and so on – to determine both the amount of coverage and the type of insurance (“term” or “permanent”) appropriate for your situation. Once you’ve reached the “empty nest” stage, and your kids are grown and living on their own, you may need to reevaluate your insurance needs. You might be able to lower your coverage, but if you still have a mortgage, you probably would

want to keep enough insurance to pay it off. After you retire, you may have either paid off your mortgage or moved into a condominium or apartment, so you may require even less life insurance than before. But it’s also possible that your need for life insurance will remain strong. For example, the proceeds of a life insurance policy can be used to pay your final expenses or to replace any income lost to your spouse as a result of your death (e.g., from a pension or Social Security.) Life insurance can also be used in your estate plans to help leave the legacy you desire. As we’ve seen, insurance can be important at every stage of your life. You will help yourself – and your loved ones – by getting the coverage you need when you need it. This article was written by Edward Jones for use by Jeff Ponte / Edward Jones Financial Advisor. by NiNi Harris, Historian

When I was growing up, I often heard St. Louis described as “a union town.” Maybe I heard that so much because many union members lived in our South City neighborhood and were members of our parish, St. Cecilia Parish. Recently, I learned that one neighborhood resident, Paul Morrin, had been General President of the Ironworkers International. (During my childhood, his widow continued to live in their bungalow on South Grand Boulevard.) The son of Irish immigrants, Morrin had come to St. Louis in 1900 and apprenticed with the ironworkers. The work was treacherous. When ironworkers were constructing the steel skeletons of skyscrapers, their casualty rate was estimated at one death per floor. Morrin struggled to organize his fellow ironworkers. A union busting newspaper man in Los Angeles targeted union leaders, including Morrin, accusing them of an act of terrorism. As a result, Morrin and other union men were imprisoned at Leavenworth. When released, they returned home as heroes. In 1918, Morrin took office as General President of the Ironworkers International. He lead the Union for thirty years, stepping down from that post in 1948. Learning about this man’s remarkable personal saga started me wondering about the history of the union movement in St. Louis. So the next time I was at the library, I randomly picked up a St. Louis City directory from 1894. I looked for a listing of unions and was dumbfounded to find two and one half pages filled with the names of local labor organizations. More than telling about the union movement, the list revealed how St. Louisans earned a living in the 1890’s. It spelled out the trades and industries that powered the local economy and built our great city. Many of the unions listed represented trades that are almost nonexistent today. In 1894, St. Louisans belonged to union locals representing harness makers, horse shoers, horse collar makers and carriage and wagon painters. There was a local for lithographers, who pursued a now antiquated method of printing words or drawings, and a local for tanners and curriers. Some of the unions recall industries that were once major forces in the St. Louis economy. The list included the Tobacco Factory Workers’ Protective Union, the Tobacco Wrapper Selectors’ and Stemmers’ Union, Tobacco Box Makers Protective Union, Tobacco Pressman and Helpers, the Cigar Makers’ International Union and the Cigar Packers’ Union. This list reminds us that before the tobacco industry left St. Louis

in the 1920’s, St. Louis was the major tobacco producer in the world. Even the famed Liggett & Myers Tobacco Company was rooted in St. Louis. Many turn-ofthe-century immigrants (Poles from the Soulard neighborhood and Italians from the Hill) found their first jobs in St. Louis at the Liggett & Meyers warehouses. Judging from the list of labor organizations, St. Louisans were making just about everything. There were broom makers, cabinet makers, range makers, furniture varnishers, box sawyers and nailers, and felt hat finishers. The Boot and Shoe Workers International Union and the coopers unions, resulting from our numerous breweries requiring barrels, recall the old adage about St. Louis, “first in shoes, first in booze and last in the American League.” The extraordinary legacy of the building trades has made St. Louis an architectural treasure. Often the unions acted as Medeival Guilds teaching and passing on their valuable skills. The bricklayers local formed in 1864, before the international organized. The locals representing stone masons and their assistants totaled six. There was also a marble cutters and setters local and a local for polishers of marble, slate and granite. These craftsmen were likely helping to build our great civic buildings like the spectacular City Hall, the monumental Union Station, and St. Louis’ inspiring new skyscrapers. The pages of labor organizations in the city directory of 1894 do not document the sixty hour work weeks nor the hazardous worksites that St. Louis workmen faced in that era. It does not give an account of the struggles fought by unions to create more wholesome and healthful work environments. The list of labor organizations does, however, tell us that the “made in St. Louis” label was on the goods stacked on shelves in general stores throughout the Midwest and West. And the list gives us a sense of the scope of the industries and trades that were building this great American City.

Jimmy

Sounder

Meet Jimmy, a 2 year old lab mix! Jimmy is a very sweet boy and gets along with other dogs. He does really well on car rides and will be your copilot. Jimmy would do best in a home with children over the age of 11. Jimmy is scared sometimes when he first meets people but warms up quickly and then is a great dog. He is house trained and knows how to sit but would benefit from additional training.

Sounder, a Treeing Walker Hound, is about four years old. He is good with kids. We are not sure about cats. He is good with dogs but would need to be supervised. Sounder is housebroken and crate trained. He would need a 6-foot privacy fence because since he is a hound, he would wander if he could. Sounder also has a couple of burned marks on his back and the top of his head, unfortunately we aren’t sure how he was burned. Sounder is very sweet and a very calm dog.

Joy Meet Joy, a 1 year old Scottish Terrier Mix. She is an always happy, friendly, inquisitive, and energetic pup! Joy is a very smart girl that enjoys spending her days doing doggie puzzles, working on basic training commands and she is always up to go for a walk. She will sit and use her kennel and is house trained. She gets along well with other dogs and likes kids, but older kids since she jumps on her people. Her forever home would be one that does not have cats. Joy likes to sing the song of her people on occasion so would not be a fit for apartment life.

Xena Xena is a 3 year old Pitbull mix that loves to play with kids. She came to us from a home with several small children, and does wonderfully with them. She does not get along with cats or other dogs. Her perfect home would have either a fenced yard, or active people that can walk her twice a day. She needs work on her basic manners, but is highly trainable. She loves to snuggle on the couch and get belly rubs.

askwillow@activelifestylesmag.com Dear Willow, I want my favorite toy but my other favorite toy is in my mouth. Is it possible to have it all; I’m not getting any younger? Striving, Buddy

No; it really isn’t possible to have it all, but that’s okay. Life involves endless choices and to maintain balance, you will have to drop something. Look at it as you wouldn’t have Filet mignon and a T-bone at the same meal (or would you?). Be flexible; avoid a mid-life crisis.

The Year of The Volunteer ALIVE AND WELL IN ST. LOUIS?

For 2017, Active Lifestyles Magazine is pleased to feature different organizations and events in need of volunteers. This month we proudly present “ALIVE and WELL STL”. Alive and Well STL is a communitywide effort focused on reducing the impact of toxic stress and trauma on our health and wellbeing. The research is clear. Toxic stress and traumatic experiences are making many of us sick and together are a

leading cause of poor health outcomes. To become Alive and Well, we need informed, supportive communities; service providers who have adopted trauma-informed practices; and traumainformed mental health services. As we become trauma informed, we will become increasingly emotionally and physically well, enabling us to be Alive and Well in St. Louis. To build a healthier St. Louis, the RHC is collaborating with individuals and organizations across the community. Become an Alive and Well STL Ambassador 1) Attending regular Ambassador meetings, based on individual interest level, where new educational content will be shared

and next steps for the Alive and Well STL initiative will be discussed; 2) Serving as a representative to their communities, ensuring the Alive and Well initiative has broad community input and that the knowledge and resources within the Ambassadors is shared broadly with organizations, groups and individuals interested in becoming Alive and Well; and 3) Guiding Alive and Well STL to achieve the initiative’s objectives by leading conversations within their places of work, neighborhoods, faith communities or other places about how people can move from “What’s wrong with you?” to “What’s happened to you?” in order to improve health outcomes in St. Louis.

If you are interested in being part of Alive and Well STL and helping continue the conversation in your organization, neighborhood, and faith community, please, visit www.aliveandwellstl.com or email aliveandwellstl@stlrhc.org Active Lifestyles Magazine Year Of The Volunteer!
