THUMBING THROUGH HISTORY Thumbing through the many pages of history, humankind has preserved drawings, artifacts, documents and photographs which tell stories and places of people, their loved ones and their lives. These remembrances are important because they help define who we are, what we have done and where we have been. Not only are these precious bits and pieces cherished and saved by us in our homes, but many of these treasures are found within libraries in our schools, public buildings, historical societies, museums, and universities. All of these libraries serve to preserve our heritage. They are a record of who and what we are. For St. Louis, The Missouri History Museum, (on the cover) is the oldest

chartered non-profit organization in Missouri. On August 11, 1866, founding members met at the Old Courthouse and established an organization “for the purpose of saving from oblivion the early history of the city and state.” From the outset, the Society collected artifacts, books, and manuscripts. Its first recorded gift was a collection of daguerreotypes of old buildings by noted local photographer Thomas Easterly. The early activities of the Missouri Historical Society’s Board of Trustees had a major impact on securing the 1904 World’s Fair for St. Louis. In 1898, the board passed a resolution authorizing a “committee to be appointed to formulate plans for the Centennial of Celebration of the Louisiana Purchase in 1903-04 and to

by Debbie Wheeler, Editor

secure for our own city the location of that celebration.” In 1913 the Missouri Historical Society occupied its permanent home in Forest Park. Completed that same year, the Jefferson Memorial Building was constructed on the site of the main entrance to the 1904 World’s Fair, also known as the Louisiana Purchase Exposition. The building, financed with profits from the exposition, was the first memorial to President Thomas Jefferson. During the first 122 years of its existence, the Missouri Historical Society has collected and preserved thousands of priceless artifacts, papers, and images. Some of the most renowned collections include the French and Spanish Colonial Archives; Charles Lindbergh Collections; Thomas Jefferson Papers; the Louisiana Purchase collections; Chouteau Family

Papers; Lewis and Clark Collections; and the 1904 World’s Fair Collection. Today, the Missouri History Museum’s mission is “to deepen the understanding of past choices, present circumstances, and future possibilities; strengthen the bonds of community; and facilitate solutions to common problems.” (credits: www.mohistory.

Featured on the cover of this month’s Active Lifestyles Magazine, and thumbing his way through a collection of his own historical events, is Joseph E. Hahn; St. Louis native and author of the newly released book, “Hitchhiking Through Europe During the Summer of 1956”. Until next month…Be Well, Be Active, and Live Life to its fullest my friends. St. Louis Lifestyles ARE…better after 50!

LOCAL RESIDENT HITCH-HIKES THROUGH EUROPE -(STOP)VISITING 10 COUNTRIES IN 1956 -(STOP)KEEPS AN EXACT AND INTERESTING DIARY, SPENDING ONLY $160 ON HIS TRAVELS! A young St. Louisan’s experiences are typed onto loose leaf pages and put away for sixty years-until recently being urged to seek publication. The memories of a lifetime described so vividly of the fascinating adventures and people he encountered, riding his thumb through Europe after WWII. Page Publishing, Inc., of New York, is contacted to read the transcript and their review board recommends entering into a contract to publish and distribute the book. This is how Joseph E. Hahn, after 60 years, has become an author, writing his first book entitled “Hitchhiking Through Europe During the Summer of 1956.” Joe Hahn and his wife, Nubia,

reside at the Lakeview Retirement Center in Fenton. The last fourteen months have been spent mailing back and forth a series of manuscripts and transcripts with the publishing company to get just the right wording and spellings. The result which came off the press just a few weeks ago, Joe’s book, “Hitchhiking Through Europe During the Summer of 1956,” is now in print. Joe had been to Europe with his parents and two sisters in 1955 to celebrate his parents 25th Wedding Anniversary. On the return shipboard experience, he met two female students from the University of Minnesota, who had been hitchhiking and staying in youth hostels. Their enthusiasm

so overwhelmed Joe, that with his parent’s permission, he planned his own trip in 1956. The book is filled with detail so very interesting, that it is hard to put it down once you start reading of his adventures and the many friends he met along the way. The highlight of the trip was “meeting Dr. Francis A. Schaeffer on a Switzerland mountain tip and taking Christ as my savior,” says Joe. “I even played ping-pong with the Captain of one of the ships, not knowing he was the Captain until after the game was over.” Joe wrote his parents twelve letters while on his journey, which were preserved by his mother and presented

to him by her on his 40th birthday. These personal letters are an addendum to the book, which needless to say, is dedicated to his mother. “As well it should be” says Joe. Eighty-one years young and retired, Joe relishes in his discussions that led him to accomplish this amazing experience which was truly the highlight of his life. He is happy to make appearances for groups to further detail his adventures and share with you the excitement of his travels. Copies of “Hitchhiking Through Europe During the Summer of 1956” are now available at your local bookstores, Amazon, and I-tunes. For further information, contact Joe Hahn at (314) 962-2268.

A STAIR LIFT CAN HELP YOU STAY IN THE HOME YOU LOVE by Jim Campbell

Most people want to stay in their own home as long as possible. However, stairs can become an obstacle to accessing all levels of a home as we age. A stair lift can allow you to stay in your home longer. A stair lift can prevent falls on stairs. Along with transporting people, they are often used to help transport laundry or groceries from one level to another. A stair lift typically comes with two remote controls. This is so one person in the home can ride the lift from one level to another and then send it back for another person to ride. When looking for a stair lift there are some important questions that need to be answered. Will it fit in my home? What is the total cost? Who will install it? How will I get it repaired should there be trouble with it? And what do I do with it when I no longer need it? The best way to make sure that a lift will fit in your stair case is to have a trained technician visit your home to do an evaluation. By visiting your home, the technician will be able to look at the

configuration of your stairs and ask you questions about your needs. They will then be able to recommend the best lift for your particular situation. When looking at pricing for a lift, make sure you account for the total cost of the lift. Prices on the internet often do not include the cost of shipping or the cost of installation. If you need the lift installed, look for a local company that specializes in stair lifts with trained technicians, rather than someone that is using subcontractors or handymen to do installations on the side. This will insure that the lift is installed properly for safe operation. Stair lifts are very dependable pieces of equipment. However, they are mechanical devices and can break down from time to time. This is another reason to pick a local company for your stair lift. A local company will likely provide a warranty on parts and labor for your lift. Should you need service they will be able to send out a trained technician with parts on their truck to get your lift up and

running again. There may come a time when you will have to move out of your home and sell it. Most realtors ask that a stair lift be removed before placing a home on the market. Some local companies such as us here at Options HME will make an offer to purchase the lift back when it is no longer needed. This is something to take into account when considering the total cost of a stair lift. Options HME, Inc. is going into its 10th year of selling and installing stair lifts in St. Louis and the surrounding communities. Give us a call or drop us an e-mail to schedule a free estimate for a stair lift. For additional information contact: Jim Campbell Options HME, Inc. THE HEALTHY BERRY by Tod DeHart

With the Holiday Season in full swing, Cranberries are usually one of the favorite dishes to grace the table. Cranberries are not only delicious, they are one of nature’s most healthy berries. In fact, many call cranberries a natural antibiotic. Recently, I spent time during cranberry harvest season in Wisconsin – America’s largest Cranberry producing state. Here, more than 20 counties grow cranberries as their largest and biggest financial crop. Most think that cranberries are actually grown in water as seen in popular television commercials. Actually, cranberries grow on low-trailing vines in sandy or peat marshes/ditches. Then during harvest season (usually late September in Wisconsin) the bogs are flooded with water and the berries float to the surface to be picked up by harvesting equipment. This makes the harvesting of the beautiful berries much easier. It also allows the growers control over the crops if a freeze should come early. Covering the berries will encase them to protect them from the frost and snow. A landmark study published in the New England Journal of Medicine, found that condensed proanthocyanidins, are the compounds in a cranberry responsible for preventing and treating urinary tract infections. If you have ever had this problem, your doctor most likely has prescribed cranberry juice to ease the discomfort. In addition, cranberries and cranberry products contain significant amounts of antioxidants that may help protect against heart disease, cancer and other diseases. Cranberries may be

SENIOR AT HOME SERVICES by Mike Giger

At Senior At Home Services, the highest quality service is provided at a reasonable rate to the most valuable generation. beneficial in the prevention of ulcers, which are linked to stomach cancer and acid reflux disease. Cranberries contain hippuric acid, which has antibacterial effects on the body, as well as natural antibiotic ingredients. Cranberries also are used plentifully in many products for their flavor, smell and beauty. Cranberries can be found in soaps, chocolates, wreaths, lotions, salsa, jelly and even wine! Mmmmmm. If you are like me, cranberries and their juice can be a little tart. Instead of adding sugar, just add a touch of lime or orange juice to your recipes. Doing so will take the tart edge off and add a hint of another fruit flavor without limiting the full benefits of the berry. Happy Holiday’s and don’t forget the cranberry sauce!

Cranberry Pumpkin Muffins Ingredients •2 cups flour •1/2 cup brown sugar •1 teaspoon baking soda •1 teaspoon cinnamon •1/2 teaspoon nutmeg •1/2 teaspoon salt •1 cup pumpkin puree •2 cups fresh or frozen cranberries, coarsely chopped •1/2 cup oil •1/4 cup milk 1/4 cup molasses •1 egg, lightly beaten Preparation Combine flour, brown sugar, baking soda, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt in a medium mixing bowl. Combine the remaining ingredients in a separate mixing bowl. Add wet ingredients to dry, mixing just until the dry ingredients are moist. Do not overmix. Generously grease a 12-muffin tin and dust with flour or line with paper muffin cups. Fill muffin cups about 2/3-full with batter. Bake pumpkin muffins in preheated 350° oven for 25 to 30 minutes, or until nicely browned. Remove pumpkin muffins from tins to wire rack to cool. Makes 12 cranberry pumpkin muffins.

I learned maintaining and rehabbing houses from my Dad, along with my brother, starting in my twenties. This type of work has been done with my Dad, and independently, since that time. Now, the man who has taught me so much, is needing assistance. I live nearby my parents and happily help in any manner I can. But, what if I were not here, who would help them? Fortunately, I am near, and all they have to do is ask.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT MEDICARE AND TURNING 65 by Dale Poss, Senior Specialist - Licensed Agent When should I sign up for Medicare Part A & Part B? • If you’re already getting benefits from Social Security or the Railroad Retirement Board (RRB), you’ll automatically get Part A & B starting the first day of the month you turn 65. (If your birthday is on the first day of the month, Part A & B will start the first day of the prior month,) • If you’re under 65 and disabled, you’ll automatically get Part A & B after you get disability benefits from Social Security or certain disability benefits from the RRB for 24 months.

What is Medicare? What are my options? What are the differences in... Medicare Advantage, Medicare Supplements, Medicare Part D plans? When does enrollment period begin and end?

People are now working Full time past age 65 and should they get Part B? • Employer or Union coverage-If you or your spouse (or family member if you’re disabled) IS STILL WORKING and you have health coverage through that Employer or Union, contact your employer or union benefits administrator to find out how your coverage works with Medicare. This includes federal or state employment, and active-duty military service. It might be to your advantage to delay Part B enrollment. You can sign up for Part B

without paying a penalty any time you have health coverage based on your or your spouse’s CURRENT employment (or a family member’s current employment if you’re disabled). Note: Coverage based on employment doesn’t include:

• COBRA

Initial Enrollment Period: • You can first sign up for Part A and/or Part B during the 7-month period that begins 3 months before the month you turn 65, includes the month you turn 65, and ends 3 months after the month you turn 65. No longer working full time. • If you will not be receiving Social Security benefits at Age 65 and do not have creditable coverage through your or spouse’s current employer or union, that is if both of you are not working. Then its up to you to enroll into Medicare. In most cases, if you don’t sign up for Part B when you’re first eligible, you may have to pay a late enrollment penalty for as long as you have Part B.

THE GIFT OF TIME COULD BE THE BEST GIFT OF ALL THIS HOLIDAY SEASON by Karen Siebert

For many, the holiday season is a time for celebration and fun with loved ones. But for others in the St. Louis area, the season can be one of the loneliest times of the year. At Siebert Insurance we know how precious the gift of time can mean to someone during the holidays. Here are a few ways you and your family can share the spirit of the holidays with others. Share a holiday dinner with local heroes Many firefighters, medical specialist and law enforcement professionals spend their holidays on the job. Bring a holiday dinner or treats to your local hospital, fire station or police station, and share the gift

of thanks with local heroes who protect and serve our community every day. Offer comfort to those in need Connect with local organizations in Missouri that help to feed the hungry or provide warmth and shelter for those out in the cold. If you’re not sure where to start, spend just a little time researching the websites of our local volunteer organizations like the Salvation Army or United Way of Greater St. Louis. Find out how and when you can help-and make it a family affair! Make some new friends at our local retirement homes While many of our senior citizens are included in holiday celebrations with

family and friends, some spend the season without anyone. Call your local retirement home and check into the volunteer opportunities they offer for helping with crafts, special events, playing cards or just spending time visiting. At our office, we make the time each year to send Christmas cards & gifts to our local veteran’s home as well as our first responders. We hope you find time to share your time this holiday season-you’ll be glad you did! Karen Siebert, General Manager Siebert Insurance Agency, LTD. 767 Gravois Rd. California Pacific SurfLiner

After the holiday hustle and bustle, you may be thinking about getting away as the New Year sets in! Warm breezes and fantastic sights await you in Southern California this January 2017! Southern California consists of the lower half of the state, primarily from Los Angeles to the Mexico (California Baja) border. As winter continues across most of the country, this part of California is ideal for a break from the cold weather, with daytime temperatures in the 70’s. DIRECTIONS Tours is offering this exclusive winter getaway vacation tour. After our nonstop Southwest Airlines flight from St. Louis to Los Angeles, we will transfer to our deluxe accommodations in San Clamente for the next two nights. We will enjoy the pristine Pacific beaches, historic pier and village while here.

Next, this exciting tour package includes The Pacific Surfliner Train from San Clamente to San Diego. This four hour excursion hugs the Pacific coast as you admire the ocean views. The Pacific Surfliner route offers a unique vantage on the Southern California seascape. As they say... to get a closer look, you’d have to be on a surfboard! Once we arrive in beautiful San Diego, we will transfer to our deluxe accommodations for the next three nights! Our hotel is directly on the San Diego Bay and Marina overlooking the San Diego skyline and harbor. The next few days we will enjoy San Diego’s diverse attractions, from beautiful Pacific coast beaches to historic sights. A locally guided city tour will feature many of San Diego’s best architecture, history and current day information. A trip to San Diego would not be complete without time to visit the famous Hotel del Coronado. A beautiful historic hotel, it was originally built in 1885. This wooden Victorian beach resort is located immediately behind the beach, facing the Pacific Ocean. It remains the largest beach resort on the North American Pacific Coast. Another day will include free-time to relax, enjoy the hotel pools and marina or how about taking a whale /dolphin watching excursion or spending the day at the San Diego Zoo! Before departing beautiful San Diego, we will also enjoy a harbor boat cruise and the Seaport Village.

By Tod DeHart

Our tour will then travel through South Cal’s beautiful farmlands. California’s agriculture is the most productive and varied in the U.S.; owing to the climate, topography, complex systems of water delivery, and diverse population of growers. Coastal temperatures are fairly consistent, and can support year-round production of many row crops. Two of South California’s major crops include fruits and nuts. A visit to Bates Nut Farm will highlight this agricultural valley. The tour will then follow the Pacific coast northward to Oceanside, California - “America’s Surf City”. Enjoy a tour of town, the beach and pier. Another stop will be at the Mission San Luis Rey De Francia. Founded in 1798 by Padre Fermin Francisco de Lasuen, the Mission was named after St. Louis IX, King of France, who lived during the 13th century. Our last evening will be near the Anaheim area prior to our morning nonstop Southwest Airlines flight back to St. Louis. Don’t miss out on this incredible winter getaway to Southern Califonia with us! For more details on this tour vacation - see inside this Explore Edition or give us a call.

EVERYONE BENEFITS WHEN YOU MAKE CHARITABLE GIFTS

Give

Now that we are in the heart of the holiday season, you may be thinking about ways you can put your money where your heart is. Specifically, you might be pondering which groups you should support with charitable gifts. And as long as you choose groups that meet the right criteria, your generosity can also be rewarding to you, in the form of tax benefits. To begin with, you’ll want to make sure you are giving to a reputable charity. That means you’ll need to ask some questions. How does a group

Jeff Ponte, Edward Jones Advisor

measure its effectiveness? Is it devoting as much of its contributions as possible to the actual work of the organization, or is it spending too much money on administrative costs? Generally, a worthwhile charity should spend at least 75% of its income on programs. You may be able to find this type of information on a charitable group’s annual report and its website. You can also go to the website of one of the agencies that evaluates charitable groups. On these sites, you can get a lot of information dealing with a charity’s effectiveness, income, spending and other topics. After you’ve identified a charity, or charities, you can decide how much you want to give and how you want to give it. If the charity has 501(c)(3) status (named after the section of the Internal Revenue Code that governs such groups), your gift can offer you a tax deduction. So, for example, if you are in the 25% tax bracket, and you give $1,000 to a qualified charity, you can

subtract the $1,000 from your adjusted gross income, which will result in tax savings of $250. Upon making your gift, make sure you get a receipt that lists the name of the organization and the date and amount of your contribution. (Your maximum deduction will be limited to a percentage of your adjusted gross income.) You can do more than simply write a check, however, if you have stocks that have grown significantly in value, you may want to donate them to a charitable group. You will be allowed a charitable deduction for the full fair market value of the gift on the date of the transfer, even if your original cost was only a fraction of today’s value. Furthermore, you will avoid the capital gains taxes you’d have to pay if you sold the stock, provided you’ve held the stock for at least a year. If you do contribute appreciated stocks, you will want to be cognizant of the effect of your donation on your

portfolio. If you were to give a sizable amount of growth-oriented stocks, would it affect your overall growth potential? Conversely, if you are primarily giving away relatively conservative, incomeproducing stocks, would it end up moving your portfolio in a riskier direction? When donating stocks, if at all possible try to do so in a way that does not harm your portfolio’s balance. In any case, whether you give cash or appreciated assets, you’ll need to make your gift by Dec. 31 if you’re going to deduct it on your 2016 taxes. So be as generous as you can afford, think about the effect of your gift on your own financial situation – and be prepared to act soon. NATIONAL

Cocoa December Day 13

A cold December day is the perfect time to make yourself a cup of hot cocoa and celebrate National Cocoa Day. Each year on December 13, people across the country enjoy honoring their favorite cold weather comfort drink. Hot cocoa is a warm beverage made with cocoa powder, heated milk or water and sugar. The terms “hot chocolate” and “hot cocoa”are often used interchangeably by Americans making the difference between them that hot chocolate is made with shaved or melted chocolate instead of the cocoa powder. It is believed that it was 2000 years ago that the first chocolate beverage was created by the Mayas and a cocoa beverage was an essential part of Aztec culture by 1400 AD. Europe popularized the beverage after it was introduced from Mexico in the New World and it has undergone multiple changes since then. Up until the 19th century, hot chocolate was used medicinally to treat ailments such as stomach diseases. In the United States an instant form of the drink is popular. It is made with hot water or milk and a packet containing mostly cocoa powder, sugar

and dry milk. People enjoy topping it with marshmallows or whipped cream. There are health benefits to drinking hot cocoa. Cocoa contains large amounts of antioxidants that may help prevent cancer. It has also been shown that the cocoa beans help with digestion. The flavonoids that are found in the cocoa also have a positive effect on arterial health.

THE TOP 9 HOLIDAY HAIR MISTAKES Scott Gardner, The Hair Whisperer

#1: Ringlets of Any Kind. The holiday buzz can make feel like a kid again, but that doesn’t mean you should look like one. Tight curls that dangle from an updo make you look like a little girl or even old fashioned. Sweep all the frou-frou into your updo, allowing only a few wisps or flyaways to fall out. #2: Rapunzel-Worthy Hair Extensions. When you have long, shiny hair that grazes your rear end, but only a bob’s worth has actually grown out of your head, even the straightest of straight guys will know that something’s up with your hair. Instead of using extensions for length, try them for boosting fullness and maybe to add an inch or two, max, to the bottom. I suggest you have your hairstylist razor the extensions to blend them in with your actual ends and asking her to clip them in below the round of the head for a more believable look. #3: Crunchy-Looking Curls. Here’s a problem that’s easily prevented-all you need is a blow-dryer and a large-barrel curling iron (chucking the jumbo bottle of gel won’t hurt, either). I suggest using Matrix-Biloage styling serum spray for fine to medium hair, roughly blowing it dry,

and then defining the curls by wrapping combed-out sections around the iron. It smoothes and controls the hair in a gorgeous, touchable way! #4: Accessory Overload. Your goal isn’t to outshine the Christmas tree- one topper in the hair is plenty festive. Tone down the sparkle and keep your accessory simple: A well placed barrette like a jeweled one or even a flowery one that is randomly pinned into the updo, is all you need. Also consider using intricately designed clips for a unique look. #5: Too Big a Tease. Unless you are dressing up to attend a Jersey Shore party, skip any style that adds two inches or more to your height. To create more luxurious-looking volume, gently backcomb the hair at the crown with a boarbristle paddle brush. Then lightly tease your hair throughout and smooth it over with your palms. If you tease solely at the crown, you’ll create a crazy pouf. #6: Hair Claws of Any Kind. Just like your flannel bunny pajamas, the clip that keeps your hair back when you’re washing your face should never leave the house. Instead, secure an evening updo with an accessory that actually disappears in

your style with the Goody Spin Pin, a coil that twists into a bun or chignon to keep it locked into place. You’ll get the same effect and height without the tacky look of the claw! #7: Product Overload. It’s easy enough to get carried away with creams, serums, and pomades. The trick is knowing how to sop it all up without having to stick your head in the sink for a complete do-over. The pro’s secret weapon: dry shampoo. I recommend Klorane Gentle Dry Shampoo with Oat Milk or Oscar Blandi Pronto Dry Shampoo Spray because they don’t produce flakes or turn dark hair gray. Mist it onto your brush, then rake it through your hair to absorb the grease. Then blast your roots with the blow-dryer, the heat will dry up more of the product. And when all else fails, play up the sleekness by pulling your hair back into a glossy bunposition it high for a playful ballerina effect or low for a more sophisticated one. #8: Too Basic a Ponytail. If your holiday festivities entail dancing, a dressy ponytail is the way to go. Worried about it looking too casual? A springy, glossy ponytail can be very sophisticated and elegant. The hair’s texture can make or break the style.

Use hot rollers to add a little bounce to up the style’s elegance. Secure the hair at ear level or below; for added polish, cover the elastic with a small section of hair and pin it beneath the tail. Then run a drop of serum over the front of your hair for high shine. #9: Top-Heavy Look. Too much teasing, together with pulling back too much hair, can leave your half-up/half-down style looking like a makeshift mullet. Instead, use the ends of your brows, not your ears, as a guide for how much hair you pull back-it adds an instant lift to the face and lets the rest of your hair fall over your shoulder. Set the hair with hot rollers first to get the finished, bouncy ends that elevate the style for evening. You are now all set for the Holiday Season, don’t forget to make an appointment with your hair stylist for a “hair tune-up” for a fresh festive look and remember, Hans Wiemann has 15-Highly trained and experienced Stylist ready to make your hair dreams become a reality, along with the most extensive Hair-Care Product Lines available in St. Louis. O’ CHRISTMAS TREE

It’s that time of year when 25 30 million homes in the U.S. will decorate with a farm-grown Christmas tree. It’s also a time when some of the public will read or see the “Christmas tree fire story” and be scared out of buying a real tree. The growers and retailers of farm-grown trees have been working with fire safety officials, scientists and testing labs for years to provide scientifically proven steps on how to properly display a harvested tree to ensure high moisture content. The Christmas Tree industry works very hard at getting a tree from the farm to the retail outlet to the consumers’ homes. This means that no family should feel like they have to settle for a dry tree

they won’t enjoy and may become a safety hazard. Hopefully people will follow a few simple care instructions and not be fooled by dramatized news stories. Often, consumers are told that “Christmas trees can cause a fire in a matter of seconds.” This is highly erroneous and unethical. A National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) published report on Christmas Tree Fires shows just the opposite. First of all, a cut Christmas tree has NEVER, ever, ever in history CAUSED a fire. Fires are caused by sparks, flames, heat or chemical reactions. Another interesting item in the NFPA report is that fire officials state clearly that artificial trees also catch on fire every year. Currently, no testing lab or standards for those products to meet in order to print the words “flame retardant” on their packaging exist. They’re really just words on a box. Fake trees catch on fire every year. According to the NFPA report, 28% confirmed residential fires where a Christmas tree was the first item ignited were a fake tree. But consumers are seldom told this. You’re encourage to follow the NFPA and scientists guidelines on how to display a farm-grown Christmas tree and not be scared by people with misleading information. A few simple steps can lead to a safe and enjoyable tree experience this holiday season.

Quick Christmas Tree Facts

There are approximately 28 - 32 million Real Christmas Trees sold in the U.S. every year. There are close to 350 million Real Christmas Trees currently growing on Christmas Tree farms in the U.S. alone, all planted by farmers. North American Real Christmas Trees are grown in all 50 states and Canada. Eighty percent (80%) of artificial trees worldwide are manufactured in China, according to the U.S. Commerce Department. Real Trees are a renewable, recyclable resource. Artificial trees contain nonbiodegradable plastics and possible metal toxins such as lead. There are local Christmas Tree recycling programs throughout North America. For every Real Christmas Tree harvested, 1 to 3 seedlings are planted the following spring. There are about 350,000 acres in production for growing Christmas Trees in the U.S.; much of it preserving green space.

There are close to 17,000 farms growing Christmas Trees in the U.S., and an estimated 100,000 people employed full or part-time in the industry. It can take as many as 15 years to grow a tree of typical height (6 - 7 feet) or as little as 4 years, but the average growing time is 6 to 8 years. The top Christmas Tree producing states are Oregon, North Carolina, Michigan, Pennsylvania, Wisconsin and Washington. (For a complete list of all 50 states ranked by several variables, see the NCTA Web site.) Common Christmas Tree species (in alphabetical order) are: balsam fir, Douglas-fir, Fraser fir, noble fir, Scotch pine, Virginia pine and white pine. HISTORICALLY SPEAKING... Life in St. Louis a Century Ago by NiNi Harris, Historian

Vivid images of the day-to-day life of a North St. Louis family a century ago are part of the extraordinary Special Collections Department of the St. Louis Public Library. These remarkable photos are the work of father and son amateur photographers Albert J. and Albert W. Dubach. Photography was still a relatively new art form when the Dubachs were taking pictures that included interior scenes of their North City home, self-portraits taken in looking mirrors, children at play in the yard, and family members carrying parasols or wearing early swimsuits. The photos date from the turn-of-the-century through World War One. The images were on more than 400 glass negatives, each stored in a manilla envelope. Luckily, names of individuals, sites and addresses were written on many of the envelopes. The Dubachs lived at 3948 Lincoln, only a few blocks west of North Grand Avenue near the Old Sportsman’s Park (then home of the St. Louis Cardinals). According to documents found in the Special Collections Department, their home was built in 1892. The 20 foot wide frame house sat on a 25 foot wide lot. Since few of the original houses in the immediate neighborhood still exist, the photos are even more important. They document the architectural history of the area as well as the family life of the middle-class in this North City neighborhood.

ST.L UIS

IT HAPPENED IN ST. LOUIS 50 YEARS AGO…

Dubach family photos show frame houses lining most of their block of Lincoln Avenue. The houses pre-date 1897, when a new building ordinance included their neighborhood in the area of the City requiring masonry construction.

Photos of the children at play show board walks instead of brick or granitoid sidewalks. Stockade fences and wood sheds frame the yard. The scene of St. Louis children posed with their snowman reminds me of the snowmen scenes in the film classic Meet Me in St. Louis. In the Christmas scene of that movie, which was set during the holiday of 1903, Judy Garland sang the new carol, “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas.” That haunting carol became a hit when the movie was released in 1944. The lyrics, “someday soon we all will be together,” struck a chord with Americans, who were longing for the safe return of their sons, husbands, and brothers from the battlefields of Europe and the South Pacific. The line in the song “happy golden days of yore” echoed the longing of soldiers far from their families that Christmas season.

St. Center

Science Holiday Ribbon

louis

The now famous red ribbon that decorates the James S. McDonnell Planetarium each holiday season was actually instigated as a prank by Washington University students in 1966. On a December evening, a group of architecture students scaled the building and left the ribbon on the recognizable hyperboloid curve of the Planetarium building. How were the culprits discovered? They also left a sign reading “Merry Christmas St. Louis, Washington University School of Architecture” tied on the handrail. None of the pranksters were caught, nor charges filed, and St. Louisans’ response was so positive, Planetarium officials decided to recreate the prank every year to continue the tradition. When the Science Center moved into the building in 1985, its leaders were no exception. The Planetarium has sported the festive trimming every year except in 2000 when it was being renovated. Today, it takes a crew of

four people using a bucket-lift four to five hours to place the ribbon, which is the more than 4 feet wide with a 20 foot bow. (credits: St. Louis Science Center Website/Facebook) The planetarium which was dedicated May 30, 1963 continues to be a popular attraction as part of the St. Louis Science Center, offering daily star shows and welcoming about 150,000 visitors each year. We hope that you have enjoyed Active Lifestyles Magazine’s “50 Years Ago” memories and photos in 2016. In 2017, we are excited to continue bringing you more fun and exciting monthly events happening during 1967 here in our great city! What were you doing in 1967? We would love to know and feature it here in 2017! Give us a call at (636) 326-1779 or email us at activelifestylesmag@gmail.com

Trouble in the Trees, Sammy Dear Sammy,

Why are you suppressing your prey drive, unless your mommy is making you do it? I know that squirrels are annoying, and they are determined on tempting us innocent dogs to such insanity.
