-Hans Christian Andersen “To Travel is to Live.” No truer words were ever spoken than in this quote by Danish author Hans Christian Andersen. Andersen who is best remembered for his fairy tales such as Aesop’s Fables, was also a noted writer of plays, novels, poems and travelogues. Indeed, traveling is a great way to live, and along with staying active, both are very important components that lead to a healthy aging process. According to the Global Coalition on Aging (GCOA), in a news article Travel and Healthy Aging: The Journey and the Destination, GCOA states that while those who stay healthy as they age are able to sustain active lifestyles, including traveling into their 70, 80s and beyond, the reverse is also true – as one travels, one will be healthier. The data available connecting travel and health is quite powerful. If, however, we think in terms of health and the activities normally associated with travel, we can actually see the benefits first hand. While traveling is a great way to assuage stress, activities like walking on the beach, hiking through national parks, museum hopping or navigating in unfamiliar surroundings,
can all have a positive impact on our health. Not only do these activities provide physical improvement, but also mental exercise as you learn and interact with different people and different situations out of your comfort zone.
-C. S. Lewis Time to make your dreams come true St. Louis. Join Active Lifestyles along with Directions Tours and Let’s Travel! Until next month…Be Well, Be Active, and Live Life to its fullest my friends. St. Louis Lifestyles ARE…better after 50!
Health Benefits of Travel: Travel Improves Brain Health: Traveling allows the mind to expand as you see the world in new and different settings. It opens your mind to all of life’s possibilities as you meet new people and adapt to new situations along the way. Travel lowers stress levels: The excitement of just looking forward to a relaxing time begins to lower the stress levels. The joy of packing for a trip to new and exciting places increases happiness and decreases depression. It’s been scientifically proven that after vacation, travelers are more rested, less anxious and in a better mood; all of which equates to lower stress levels. Travel Decreases Heart Disease: According to the Framingham Heart Study, women who vacationed every six years or less had a significantly higher risk of developing a heart attack or coronary death compared to women who vacationed at least twice a year. Similarly, the study showed that men who did not take an annual vacation had a 20 percent higher risk of death and 30 percent greater risk of death from heart disease. Travel Keeps You Fit: When you travel, you want to see and do all the things you possibly can. Most traveling either has an element of sightseeing, walking, hiking, or water sports, so you are most likely to engage in more activity than usual. Even if you plan to hang at the beach all day, walking on sand forces your muscles to work twice as hard. Travel Increases Flexibility: No matter how set in stone travel plans may be, traveling always comes with a certain amount of unpredictability. For most travelers, this means they need to allow a large margin for sudden changes in their schedules. Traveling forces you to be more flexible, which is a great attribute that makes life much easier in the long run.
All my best, Debbie Debbie Wheeler, Active Lifestyles Magazine Tod DeHart, DIRECTIONS Tours, LLC Travel is proven to be one of the best ways to make your life healthier, happier, stronger and more fullfilled. Actual studies have proven that travel increases well-being, learning experiences, decreases stress levels, and creates memories of a lifetime. In addition, traveling builds stronger relationships, new friendships and connects people to new ideas and cultures. Vacation and relaxation go hand in hand. When leaving home (or work) and adventuring away from “the norm”, we leave our day to day lives and responsibilities far behind. This allows our bodies to reset our biological body clock and synchronizes it with the earth around us. Notably, studies, like the one Debbie points out in her article above, have shown decreased stress levels in people who travel. Reducing the amount of stress over just one week away on a trip, travelers registered lower levels of stress hormones in their saliva. It is common knowledge that travel brings people together and builds new and everlasting relationships. Whether you travel alone, with family, or with friends, a vacation get-away improves and forms relationships and friendships.
In my 22 years of travel experience, I have taken joy and pleasure in seeing so many new relationships form and grow while adventuring out. One of my greatest joys is introducing single travelers to new people, which ultimately become lifelong friendships. Because of this, I decided to create a more affordable pricing package for single travelers with DIRECTIONS Tours! When traveling as a single, one must pay more money in most cases (due to not spliting hotel costs with a traveling companion / spouse). This leads to higher single supplemental costs and deters many people from traveling alone. So... I went to work with our vendors and negotiated better rates for our single guests. Now, when traveling with DIRECTIONS Tours, single travelers will enjoy our great trips at the same rates of doubles or in some cases, just a little more. We are the only travel company in the region to offer this affordable option! As you thumb through the pages of this special Travel Issue of ACTIVE LIFESTYLES MAGAZINE, find some of our most popular tour destinations for 2017. I hope you can join us on one of these exciting adventures.
Happy Trails, Tod
we travel not to escape life but for life not to escape us

DIRECTIONS TOURS OFFERS SINGLE TRAVELERS THE LOWEST SUPPLEMENTS Carrie Pruitt Sieker, Tour Operations Manager
Hello Travelers! Everday we receive calls from single travelers (women and men) that are frustrated with higher costs simply because they choose to travel alone. Even though there is a reason for single supplements, where doubles split hotel room costs, we understand the frustration of these additional costs for singles. We found that many travelers prefer to enjoy the amenities of a single room. Now, when traveling with DIRECTIONS Tours, single travelers will enjoy our great trips at the same rates of doubles or just a little more.
(see details below). We are proud to say that we are the ONLY travel company in our region that offers this discount program for single travelers! Worried about traveling alone? Rest assured, when you are a DIRECTIONS guest, you are never “alone”! I have the pleasure of traveling aboard several of the tours each year and see how wonderful it is having our travelers engage with one another. Many of our travelers become lifelong friends and travel buddies. There are so many great places
to explore this year and DIRECTIONS Tours is a great place to start your vacation planning! If you would like to speak to me personally about your next vacation tour with DIRECTIONS and/or find out more about traveling single, give me a call today! Warm Regards, Carrie

Cardinals Spring Training Tour is a Homerun!
It is hard to believe, but baseball season will be gearing up for the New Year! Our St. Louis Cardinals had a fun and exciting 2016 with playing in the playoffs! Spring Training begins in early March in beautiful Jupiter, Florida. It is an experience for any true baseball fan of any age! The St. Louis Cardinals
play at Roger Dean Stadium, named after Roger H. Dean, proprietor of Roger Dean Automobiles – one of the first Mega Dealerships in Florida. The business has held the naming rights to the stadium since opening in 1998. Roger Dean Stadium is simply my favorite Spring Training facility in the country. Not just because I am a Cardinal fan, more so because of location, seating, and size! The stadium only holds 6,871 people, which makes every seat in the park a “home run”. The intimate feel of this stadium surrounds you and team players are almost within reach! It is as if you are sitting at a high school/college sports event with the big leagues. The Roger Dean Stadium Complex is the only stadium in the country to host four minor league teams and host two major league teams – that being our Cardinals and the Miami Marlins. Not to worry though, Cardinal red takes over this venue by far and St. Louisans can be proud to call Jupiter the
winter home of “Cardinal Nation”! Right before the stadium debut in 1998, I was privileged to take a tour of the construction site that would soon grace baseball fans from all over. I remember taking a bus out to a large sandy parcel of land with just a few trees here and there. I thought to myself, “what in the world are they thinking building this in no man’s land”. But, this was truly a stadium being built with the mantra “if you build it… they will come” – and boy, have they! Today, the stadium is surrounded with lush foliage and landscaping, parking facilities, restaurants, shops and a newly built hotel immediately across the drive from the stadium. In addition, Florida’s Atlantic University would grace the property next door within a few years after the stadium was completed. The new Alcoa neighborhood would rise with residential homes, apartments and condos making the stadium district active yearround.
Each year, for the last 16 years, DIRECTIONS Tours has enjoyed taking people to Jupiter to experience the Cardinals in training. Many people take the tour to enjoy easy access in/out of the stadium, fellow Cardinal fans and an all-inclusive tour package that allows relaxation and comfort throughout. Many travelers make spring training an annual event and vacation. We offer our Spring Training package as a flight or motorcoach option depending on your time, budget and transportation preference. You can find out more information about our Cardinals Spring Training Tour on the opposite page. Until then, safe travels! For More Information call DIRECTIONS Tours at (314) 577-0077 or (888) 810-1171 www.directionstours.com
THE CARDINALS ARE HEADED TO JUPITER!!!
Get Up-Close & Personal with the Players
“Let’s Go Cardinals… Let’s Go!” is a familiar cry by the fans in St. Louis every year, and it follows the Red Birds south to their Spring Training home in Jupiter, Florida. The Cardinals are gearing up with many new names and faces on the roster, fans can get to know the new players and see their favorites returning. Spring Training allows fans not only to familiarize themselves with the new players; it is a fantastic opportunity to get up close and personal with them as well. Roger Dean Stadium is one of the best stadiums to have a personal contact and view of your favorite guys on the field. Any seat in the stadium gives fans the closest seats to the action than
any Spring Training facility in Florida. If that is not close enough, enjoy taking in one of the six practice fields behind the stadium prior to a game! Players are much more accommodating during spring training when it comes to signing autographs. Get there early and be prepared to stand on the sidelines during practice. Players usually enjoy chatting with fans and signing autographs just after practices prior to the actual game. Watch for familiar faces in the crowd too. Many Red Bird players enjoy watching the games on their days off the field. They, too, enjoy the games in the stands and are usually friendly to sign autographs or shake your hand.
To make the most of your up close and personal time with players remember these tips: • Arrive Early for practices located behind the stadium. • Bring something you want signed. A jersey, hat, ball, photo, card or something to write on. • Have a Sharpie (or similar) permanent black marker (the players will not have one) • Be respectful to your fellow fans and limit your time with a player and always let the kids go first! • Be respectful to the players, remember that they are working and may not always have time to sign autographs and chat.

TOUR HIGHLIGHT
Mackinac Island
A SPECIAL PLACE BACK IN TIME
A very popular summer time destination is Mackinac Island, Michigan. As the heat of a St. Louis summer settles in, the cooler days, sparkling lake waters, sandy beaches are a great escape! We travel to Northern Michigan and the crossing of the Mackinac Straights where the Upper Peninsula of the state meets the lower. Here is where the two Great Lakes of Michigan and Huron connect and we find the beautiful lakeside village of Mackinaw City (spelled Mackinaw). Today, the village is filled with quaint shopping and relaxing beaches along the shores of the straight. It is also where we board the passenger ferry over to Mackinac Island. This is such a beautiful crossing of Lake Huron, indoor seating or for those who love the wind in their hair, there
is outdoor seating atop the ferry for the twenty minute crossing. It is always a great pleasure to approach Mackinac Island, as she is a gem to gaze upon from the waters. Welcome to Mackinac Island! Here, there are no motorized vehicles allowed on this pristine 3.8 mile island. Mackinac Island once served as a strategic point for the Great Lakes fur trade and later the British established Fort Mackinac on the island during the American Revolutionary War. The Fort still stands today and is open for tours which include costumed docents and battle recreations. Mackinac Island first became a popular summer resort destination for the very wealthy in the late 19th century and the entire island is now listed as a National Historic Landmark.
AUGUST 7 - 11, 2017 (5 Days) $ 1497.00 pp DBL
Travelers are wooed by the architecture, gardens, galleries, restaurants, history, natural beauty, and the eight mile bicycling trail that follows the island’s perimeter. The Village main streets are filled with wonderful shops, cafes and fudge shops and tourists are known as “fudgies!” The natural beauty of the island is best experienced by horse-drawn carriage. Narrated carriage tours are always a highlight as the horses make their way through the heavily wooded areas, past the fort, and over to a scenic lookout of a natural carved arch that overlooks the water. The lilacs that drench the island are thick and sweetly scent the air! Mackinac Island has been the setting of two feature films: This Time for Keeps,
starring Esther Williams, in 1946 and Somewhere in Time, which was filmed at the Grand Hotel (pictured above) in 1979 and starred both Christopher Reeves and Jane Seymour. The Grand Hotel opened in 1887 and was a summer retreat for vacationers who arrived by lake steamers from Chicago, Erie, Montreal, and Detroit. It is one of the Island’s most predominant focal points. The hotel’s front porch, the longest in the world, became a principal meeting place for all of Mackinac Island in the 1890’s. Today, there are 386 guest rooms, none of which are alike. WHEN TO GO? Summertime! Mackinac Island begins to cool down on the cold waters by September. Go when the breezes are warm and comfortable. We invite you to join us!

YELLOWSTONE, THE TETONS BADLANDS, JACKSON, DEVILS TOWER
AUG. 31 - SEPT. 10, 2017 (11 Days) $ 2397.00 pp DBL Singles Only $350.00 addtl This new Tour is a feast for all senses! This tour features the beauty of South Dakota and Wyoming. Traveling westward we enjoy scenic South Dakota known for more types of rock formations and sediments than anywhere else in the continental USA. Early afternoon will bring us to South Dakota’s Famous Corn Palace in Mitchell, SD. Covered in western murals completely made out of corn, this unique and one-of-a-kind attraction is a must see. The evening will find us just a little further west in Chamberlain, SD with a stay at the famous “Al’s Oasis” on the Missouri River. To the west finds us in the unique Badlands National Park. Created by the erosion of the earth’s surface everyday, The Badland’s terrain carves out an incredible sandcastle-like valley… absolutely stunning! We will finish our visit of the Badlands at the famous Wall Drug Store. We will travel through the majestic Black Hills prior to our arrival in WYOMING - “Forever West”. We travel just to the north of the state where we come to Devil’s Tower National Monument. This astounding geologic feature that protrudes out of the rolling prairie surrounding the Black Hills. The site is considered Sacred to the Lakota and many other tribes that have a connection to the area. Devils Tower entices us to explore and define our place in the natural and cultural world.
Pushing into Wyoming we will travel Sitting Bull Pass and the Ten Sleep Canyon. This canyon is some of the most spectacular scenery in America and is breathtaking as we work our way through! Our overnight will be in Cody - home of Buffalo Bill Cody and the last town before entering into Yellowstone from the east. We now have arrived at Yellowstone National Park America’s first National Park, established in 1872 by pioneer Ferdinand Vandiveer Hayden. Located along the upper Rocky Mountain range in the northwest corner of Wyoming, Yellowstone is one of America’s most remote National Parks. Surrounded by dense forest and mountain ranges, beautiful lakes, canyons, rivers and mountain ranges and features some of the world’s most dynamic natural features. The park was the first of its kind in our country, and is known for its wildlife and geothermal features. More than two million acres, or 3,000 square miles, stretch over the surface area that is known as Yellowstone.
The park is so diverse and large that it is literally divided into many climate and natural zones. The most famous area is known as the Yellowstone Caldera. Half of the world’s geothermal features are in this area of Yellowstone. Fueled by an ongoing underground volcano, lava flows and rocks from
volcanic eruptions cover most of the land area of Yellowstone. It is one of the largest remaining ecosystems on our planet. The caldera area features some of the most impressive geysers and hot springs in the park. The most famous geyser in the park, and perhaps in the world, is Old Faithful Geyser. Although not the largest or most powerful geyser in the park, Old Faithful is just that... “faithful” and dependable. Park Rangers have been able to estimate Old Faithful’s eruptions for over 100 years. Today, crowds line the boardwalk around Old Faithful for the geyser’s “show” approximately every 90 minutes. The largest geyser is located just west of Old Faithful, known as Steamboat Geyser in the Norris Geyser Basin. There are over 300 geysers in Yellowstone and a total of at least 10,000 geothermal features throughout the park. Amazingly over two-thirds of the world’s geysers are located in Yellowstone! Hundreds of species of mammals, birds, fish and reptiles make Yellowstone their home, including several that are either endangered or threatened. Many found only in this region of North America. Grizzly and Black bears, wolves, and free-ranging herds of bison and elk are native to Yellowstone. Visitors often encounter many of the park’s wildlife. Driving through the park offers views of many herds of animals as well as an occasional bear sighting. One of the park’s biggest focal points is Lake Yellowstone. Located in the center of Yellowstone and flowing into the majestic Yellowstone River to the south, the lake compromises more than 100 miles of shoreline.
Yellowstone Lake is the largest body of water in Yellowstone National Park and is the largest freshwater lake above 7,000 feet. Many Geysers, fumaroles and hot springs are found alongside and even in the lake making some spectacular scenery! Your Tour Guide will offer a comprehnsive tour of the park for the next two days! Get ready to be awe struck and witness the “wild” side of Wyoming.
Just south of Yellowstone we will explore The Grand Tetons National Park. The Tetons are some of the most photographed mountains in the world due to their drastic elevation and no foothills. At the base of the Tetons we will enjoy an incredible boat cruise on Jenny Lake. While in the Tetons we will enjoy our overnights in Jackson Hole. Many shops and boutiques offer great western collectables. If you are more adventurous, we will be offering a guided float trip down the Snake River for wildlife sightings. One evening we will be entertained by the cowboys and cowgirls at the famous Jackson Hole BAR J Chuck Wagon Dinner Show. Don’t Miss Out! This area of our country is one of our most popular every year and with an incredible price that cannot be beat!

VOLUNTEER WITH YOUR HEART IN 2017 AND BRING COMFORT INTO SOMEONE’S LIFE
Virginia Kresko, Heartland Volunteer Coordinator
The Year of TheVolunteer
Everyday people say “I would like to be a part of helping someone” and just don’t know where to start…you can start here!! Perhaps you cannot help others financially but you can give of your time and self which is priceless.
Hospice is a special kind of care designed to provide sensitivity and support for people in the final phase of a terminal illness. Heartland Hospice’s goal is to provide palliative and supportive services to meet physical, psychological, social and spiritual needs of patients and their families in a health care facility or other residential settings. Volunteers can provide one-on-one attention to residents who are lonely or cut off from their families, thereby reducing feelings of isolation and contributing to their sense of belonging. Veterans dedicated to visiting with other Veterans are also needed in our hospice care. The benefits are endless when one can make a “DIFFERENCE”.
Volunteers are the heart of the Hospice Team. We depend on our Hospice volunteers to help us provide the extra love and care our clients and their families need at this time in their life. Heartland volunteers offer support, companionship and practical, caring help to this special group of people. Staying with the patient so family members can take a break, reading scripture to patients, or holding their hand. The help and support our volunteers give is returned to them in countless ways. You can make a DIFFERENCE. All assignments are in close proximity to your home, work or school. You can donate as little or as much of your time as you desire.
Please contact Virginia at 314-453-0990 if you would like to bring something special into someone’s life. Be sure to inquire about our next Training Class. Each issue in 2017, Active Lifestyles will focus on a volunteer prospect in St. Louis that could just be the perfect fit for you. The opportunities are countless, so how about it St Louis? This year, give back to the community you live in, making a difference in others’ lives AND YOURS!
THINGS OLDER WOMEN SHOULD KNOW ABOUT HAIR Scott Gardner, The Hair Whisperer
I believe the secret to looking good at any age is to feel comfortable in your own skin and to find styles that flatter your best attributes and play down the worst ones. I’ll share 9 things older women should know about hair including the trends worth watching, how to find your most flattering hairstyles and color advice you shouldn’t ignore. There’s another thing you should know about hair and it’s this; Forget the rules. You see, I don’t believe in the rules they make for Women Past a Certain Age. Rules such as: • Thou Shalt Not Grow Your Hair Below the Shoulders Past 60 • Thou Shalt Always Color Thy Gray Hair • Thou Shalt Go Easy on the Hairspray The Most Flattering Hairstyle Length is… There is a hair length that looks good on everyone no matter their age, their face shape or hair texture is hair that falls somewhere below the chin and at the shoulders. Specifically I mean at least an inch or 2 below the chin, but no longer than the shoulders. Think about it; this hair length works on curly hair, straight hair, wavy hair
and fine hair. Round faces look less round with hair that falls below the chin and long faces look less long at this length than with long hair. Shoulder length hair is really flattering on older women, because it hides the problem spots that crop up as we age: • Double chins. Short hair exposes a double chin. Shoulder-length hair hides them. • Turkey wattles. Shoulder-length hair is brilliant at hiding loose skin at the neck, while short hair (again) exposes them. • Wrinkly neck? Same thing. Plus shoulder-length hair is youthful. You Don’t Have to Go Short After Age 50. It is a myth that the moment you turn a certain age (some “experts” say 50, some say 60, some say 65 just to be different) that you have to lop your hair off. There are plenty of women over the age of 70 who look gorgeous with hair that’s to their shoulders or longer. No matter your age, your hairstyle should flatter your face and your figure: • If you have a round or square face, you may look better with hair that’s longer.
• Women with a long face generally look better with shorter hairstyles, but shorter can mean hair that’s to the shoulders, a gorgeous long bob. • You also have to consider your hair texture. • It’s true that many women with fine, thin hair look better with hair that’s above their shoulders with a few layers cut in. • Women with thick, curly hair may actually look better with longer hair, because longer hair will weigh down the curl. There Actually is a Right Way to Shampoo Your Hair. Chances are you have been washing your hair incorrectly for your entire life. It’s true. You’re probably not wetting your hair thoroughly, you surely are not scrubbing your scalp long enough and you’re likely not rinsing out your conditioner completely. And speaking of conditioner, you should not skip the conditioner, even if you have The Oiliest Hair on Earth. There is a trick to conditioning oily hair: apply it only to the bottom of hair. Never let it touch your scalp.
If you have super dry hair or curly hair, focus on conditioning it and applying oils (like Moroccan oil) and continue to shampoo daily. There is a false belief that depending on the type of hair you have, should determine how often or how little you should shampoo. This is a myth; you need to wash your hair daily to remove all the dirt and build-up in your hair and to un-clog pores along with the bacteria that develops daily on your hair and scalp. Bangs are a Great Way to Shave Off Years From Your Appearance. If you don’t have bangs, consider getting them. Long, side-swept bangs can visually take years off your look. They bring attention to your eyes and keep attention off your neckline, which tends to get saggy and wrinkly even on women with the best plastic surgery. This is PART ONE OF A THREE PART SERIES of Scott Gardner’s “Hair Whisperer” seen every month exclusively in Active Lifestyles Magazine. See Part TWO in the next issue! Scott Gardner is Marketing Coordinator for Hans Wiemann, St. Louis.

Others involve personal growth – one day, you’ll finally become fluent in that foreign language you’ve been studying. But of all the destinations you can identify, few will be as important as retirement – specifically, a comfortable retirement. And that’s why it’s so important to consider the “roadblocks” you might encounter on your road to the retirement lifestyle you’ve envisioned. Here are five of the most common obstacles: • Insufficient investments – Very few of us have ever reported investing “too much” for their retirement. But a great many people regret that they saved and invested too Half Page Program(5.5”x4.25”) little. Don’t make that mistake. Contribute as much as you can afford to your 401(k) or other employer-sponsored retirement
plan, and increase your contributions whenever your salary goes up. Even if you do participate in your retirement plan at work, you may also still be eligible to fund an IRA, so take advantage of that opportunity, too. And always look for other ways to cut expenses and direct this “found” money toward your retirement. • Underestimating your longevity – You can’t predict how long you’ll live, but you can make some reasonable guesses – and you might be surprised at your prospects. According to the Social Security Administration, men reaching age 65 today can expect to live, on average, until age 84.3, while women turning age 65 today can anticipate living, on average, until age 86.6. That’s a lot of years – and you’ll need to plan for them when you create long-term saving, investing and spending strategies. • Not establishing a suitable withdrawal rate – Once you are retired, you will likely
need to start withdrawing money from your 401(k), IRA and other retirement accounts. It’s essential that you don’t withdraw too much each year – obviously, you don’t want to run the risk of outliving your resources. That’s why you need to establish an annual withdrawal rate that’s appropriate for your situation, incorporating variables such as your age, the value of your retirement accounts, your estimated lifestyle expenses, and so on. Calculating such a withdrawal rate can be challenging, so you may want to consult with a professional financial advisor. • Taking Social Security at the wrong time – You can start taking Social Security as early as age 62, but your checks will be bigger if you wait until your full retirement age, which will probably be 66 or 67, or when your payments “max out” at 70. You might not be able to afford to wait until then, but by postponing
the date you begin taking withdrawals, you could help yourself considerably. • Ignoring inflation – It’s been low in recent years, but inflation hasn’t disappeared, and it could rise at exactly the wrong time – when you’re retired. That’s why you’ll want your portfolio to include some investments with the potential to outpace inflation, even during your retirement years. By being aware of these roadblocks, and taking steps to overcome them, you can help smooth your journey toward retirement – and once you get there, you may enjoy it more. Call Us Today... (636) 326-1779 VALENTINES JEWELRY INSURANCE
Have some jewelry in the house? Protect it! If you have some new jewelry in your home this Valentine’s Day, you should take a few minutes to think about insurance. Things to consider when insuring jewelry: You may need to purchase additional coverage. Your homeowners’ policy covers valuable items such as jewelry only up to set amounts. If the cost of replacing your jewelry exceeds that limit, you will want to purchase scheduled personal property coverage. You can check your policy or give us a call at 636343-1000.
by Karen Siebert
You might want to reconsider your deductible amounts. As always, this impacts your policy premium. It’s a good idea to take a look at your deductibles whenever you make a change to your policy. Do you need an appraisal? You may need to have an independent appraisal if the insurance company requires it or if you don’t know the value of your jewelry. Each item should be listed with a description and value on paper. What kind of coverage is offered? You’ll want to determine if items are covered no matter where they are, whether they’re in St. Louis, or on an international trip, and if the policy offers full replacement cost. You also should
ask if you will be required to replace your jewelry if lost or stolen, or if you can simply keep the cash settlement. Pictures can be helpful. Lost or stolen pieces of jewelry sometimes can be recreated if the jeweler has a good photograph to work from. Should I go with a company that specializes in jewelry insurance? There are companies that specialize in jewelry insurance. Whether you choose one of these, or a company that we represent, you’ll want to make sure they are reputable and stable. Is the value of your jewelry mainly sentimental? Is an item irreplaceable? If the answer to either of these questions is “yes,” you might consider foregoing
insurance. But please, talk to an agent before making that decision. That’s what we’re here for. Of course, it’s important to store your jewelry securely when it’s not in use; a safe in your home or a safe-deposit box is best. We want your jewelry to be replaced if it’s lost or stolen, but we’d rather your sentimental and valuable pieces stay with you and your family for years to come. Here’s hoping your Valentine’s Day is full of fun and romance! Karen Siebert, General Manager Siebert Insurance Agency, LTD. 767 Gravois Rd. Fenton, MO 63026 www.siebertinsurance.com

by NiNi Harris, Historian
When I was a kid, it was a thrill to to go through the mail and find a shiny post card image of New York’s skyline or of a lake reflecting the mountains in Glacier National Park. The very concept of travel was exotic. Our lives were rich with our extraordinary St. Louis Zoo and museums to visit and with many weekends spent with a picnic basket and thermos of lemonade in the foothills of the Ozarks. The modern concept of the vacation, however, was virtually inconceivable to my family, my school friends and play mates. We were part of the baby boom – with big families that made for astronomical grocery bills. Who could afford a vacation? So the post cards, often sent by a single aunt who worked for and traveled with the railroads, fascinated us. Those post cards teased my desire to travel. Today, the internet and Facebook bombard me photographs. All these internet photos simply make the old postcard images even more magical. So along with loving to travel, I collect post cards, especially of St. Louis. An Act of Congress in 1898 kicked off the era of post cards by allowing private companies to print cards. The back side of the card was reserved for the address. Often a blank space was left next to the image on the front for a message. In 1907, member nations of the Universal Postal Union agreed that messages could be on the left side of the
back of a mailing card, leaving the entire front of the card for an image. At this time the Germans were preeminent in the printing industry. Many of the post cards of St. Louis and other American cities and sites were the work of German craftsmen. Their colorized cards are often documents featuring photographic accuracy and at the same time possess a mystical sense of artistry. World War One ended that golden age of postcards. The quality and artistry of post cards by American printers dipped radically. To save ink, American printers introduced white borders around the cards. While my favorite cards of St. Louis are from the era of the German printers, my favorite cards of our National Parks date to the era of the linen cards, 1930-1945. These cards were made with a high rag content, giving the image and colors a special texture and character. And I enjoy the modern, shiny photochrom cards of my childhood. The skies on those cards are remarkably blue. Whether the cards are Germanmade, linen, or photochrom, all these post cards seem to capture the magic of a place, and the magic of travel.

HISTORICALLY SPEAKING... GOLDEN AGE OF POSTCARDS
IT HAPPENED IN ST. LOUIS 50 YEARS AGO…
UFO's OVER ST. LOUIS “Space…The final frontier… These are the voyages of the Starship Enterprise. Its continuing mission: To explore strange new worlds… To seek out new life; new civilizations… To boldly go where no one has gone before” It’s been over 50 years since Star Trek brought space travel and aliens from Galaxies far, far away right in to our living rooms; invoking the imaginations of generations of wide eyed television viewers. All over the world, from children to adults, people speculated about spaceships, space travel and life from other planets that may travel to earth via extraterrestrial technology, better known as UFO’s. Unidentified Flying Objects, or UFO’s for short, is defined by dictionary. com as any unexplained moving object observed in the sky, especially one assumed by some observers to be of extraterrestrial origin. UFO sightings have been recorded throughout history all over the world, leaving us to wonder about other planets and whether extraterrestrials have actually visited Earth. UFO’s became a major subject of interest that inspired numerous films and books following the development of rocketry after World War II. One of the first well-known sightings of UFO’s was in 1947. Aviator pilot, Kenneth Arnold, created a media
buzz when he claimed he saw a group of objects moving at a high speed near Mount Rainier in Washington while flying his small plane. He described the objects as “flying in a saucer-like fashion like you take a saucer and throw it across the water.” In the excitement of it all, it is believed, reporters mashed up Arnolds words, hence the term “flying saucer” was coined. In February of 1967, three separate sightings occurred in the state of Missouri, one of which happened in St. Louis. As reported in the St. Louis Post Dispatch, February 7, 1967 and according to a copy in the National Investigations Committee on Aerial Phenomena (NICAP) files “Midnight CST (1:00 a.m. EST). A couple was approached by an oval object that hovered just above the ground displaying red, blue, green, and white flashing lights. The object then flew away. The other two Missouri sightings occurred on Valentine’s Day, February 14, in Lee’s Summit and Jefferson City. So here we are in a world far, far away from 1967, trekkers. Why wait for unexplained flashes in the sky, or even a final frontier? Join Active Lifestyles Magazine and Directions Tours LLC., and let your imaginations wander, taking you on a mission to travel; to explore strange new worlds, and seek out new life; to boldly go wherever you have never gone before… Beam us up, Scotty! What were you doing in 1967? We would love to know and feature it here in 2017! Give us a call at (636) 326-1779 or email us at activelifestylesmag@gmail.com

Meet Zoey Lynn, a beautiful 3 year old Border Collie/Lab mix. She’s “Perfect”, completely house trained and does not need to be crated when left home alone. Zoe Lynn loves to be outside in her backyard playing fetch, chase, tug of war, or any game that involves running, jumping, and would do well in an active home! She likes to go on walks, but is still working on fine tuning her leash manners. She is good with the other dogs but has not yet been tested with cats or kids. Zoe Lynn is a beautiful girl, who’s pictures don’t do her justice as she is even more beautiful in person.
Carmen is a beautiful, well tempered 6 year old American Staffordshire. Most of the time she is calm and relaxed. When she meets new people, she shines with enthusiasm and excitement.
