Jilly’s Cafe’ and Steakhouse Jilly’s Cafe & Steakhouse is a locally owned restaurant that has been serving the High Ridge and Fenton area upscale food at reasonable prices since 2006. Located off of Highway 30 and Little Brennan Road one can find Jilly’s tucked behind a small strip mall. I had to make a few U-turns in order to find Jilly’s but found the hunt to be well worth it! Jilly’s is a paradox. The fine dining area is warm and cozy and some booths provide quiet privacy. There is also a pub area off to one side for folks who just want to grab one of Jilly’s appetizers and a brew
and knock out a game of pool. There are wonderful event spaces within the restaurant and an outside patio for dining in warmer weather. The eats here are classic and there are plenty of choices to please all. Jilly’s is well known for their popular spinach artichoke dip but they also offer a large range of appetizers such as calamari, chicken wings, toasted cannelloni bites and much more. Diners find many options for fine dining including beef Wellington, chicken spedini, veal tutto mare, and ribeye steak. There are lighter options including a grilled chicken and...

about us H
ello, Everyone!
Today my heart is sad. I am so disappointed in our beloved city and how so many people are quick to turn to violence and destruction when they are not happy about something. REALLY? All throughout our lives we hear news that we are not happy with. Should all anger, frustration and disappointment be met with violence and destruction? Just imagine what we would have in its wake. I never understood why someone would vandalize someone else’s property. Just for the sake of it being there and they wanted to release whatever is pent up inside of them. REALLY? Whatever happened to using words? Joining committees, taking positive action to make changes. Oh, yeah….that creates lots of discipline, thought process and follow through. Something called lots of work. I feel that we as a nation have lost respect. Respect for one another and for ourselves. If you thought about and actually cared for another human being, you would never mistreat them or their property. If you had respect for yourself you wouldn’t mistreat yourself with eating too much, not taking good care of yourself, or spending too much time with idolizing the wrong things. I am hoping and praying that 2015 brings a much calmer, peaceful and respectful time to all of us. Please make this New Year a year of change. Find peace to replace your anger, stop the prejudices you may have, find the love for one another. Learn to respect yourself by taking good care of yourself. Get the exercise you need and watch what you eat. Love and idolize your God. Maybe then we might find December 2015 a much better world.

Let Us Hear From You!
wellness UNLOCK YOUR SOUL’S PURPOSE by Beth Thater Boesel
It is time to step out of the physical clutter that is holding you back and move into a greater expansion of your Higher-Self! Each one of us is on this planet for a reason. Do you know your soul’s purpose? Not understanding your unique Divine Purpose can create pain or patterns in your life that are difficult to overcome, such as stress, fears, anxiety or addictions. I work with people at a core level to provide clarity, direction, personal growth and healing. I have the ability to connect both with one’s higher self as well as the spiritual realms in order to identify barriers and create strategies that eliminate roadblocks. This sets my clients up for greater well-being and the path to success? Here are some commonly asked questions: 1. Beth, how do you help people release lower emotions such as stress or anxiety? I am an intuitive. This means that I have the ability to see, feel, and hear beyond the physical earthly realm we live in. This is also known as clairvoyance (the ability to see) and clairaudience (ability to hear). I am able to connect to your higher-self, physically, emotionally, and spiritually. I am shown where
the sickness/energetic blocks are located. I have a strong connection to God/Source energy and am guided and directed to the exact areas of my client’s discomfort. I simply open myself up to God’s essence and allow Divine energy to flow through me. With the tools that are available to me, I am able to energetically help release burdens and energetic blocks, and lift emotional layers off of my clients. My clients are generally able to feel these shifts occur and it truly is a blessing to experience. I am also certified in several other healing modalities which give me additional tools for supporting my clients. 2. What can I expect during and after a session? Most people feel a great energetic release. Where they may have been holding on to extreme sadness or suppressed emotions, they now experience a new sense of freedom which helps them feel liberated! Many clients experience stepping into a greater version of themselves. They feel empowered with a renewed sense of confidence. It is not unusual for my clients to have experiences and visitations from spiritual realms such as: The Angelic realm, Christ, Mother Mary, Saints, and other Master Teachers. I work in
a very high, energetic realm. I provide a safe and sacred space for others to come into and connect with Source. 3. What do you bring to the table that is different than other practitioners? I am an open and clear conduit and have the ability to connect to God’s pure essence. It is one thing to have certifications but another to be able to actually hear God’s voice and see and hear the direction to take. My connection to the Divine is so strong that my clients are able to connect with this divine flow of energy and actually experience the light of our Creator streaming through them. I am able to communicate with the Angelic realm, Christ, God, Master Teachers and receive the clarity and direction that I need to take with each client. I have spent several years training in Peru, Spain, and the U.S. with strong teachers who helped me unlock my own soul’s purpose. As a result, I grew into a larger expanded version of my God-self and it is my purpose to help others activate their strength and power within.
Bonus: Sign up for a Complimentary “Clarity and Release Consultation” call which is valued at $147.00. Gift certificates are available!

WHAT IS MYCOPLASMA? by Linda Emmanuel
Mycoplasmas are the smallest living organisms, even smaller than viruses. They are so small they can cross the blood-brain barrier. A mycoplasma is the DNA strand of a bacterium, encased in a membrane. (See photo.) It is parasitic in nature, needing a host to survive. There are 100+ species of mycoplasmas. Some specifically attack plants and others attack animals. They are anaerobic and like other bacteria flourish in an acidic pH. Mycoplasma membrane is made of fat and sugar, which it needs to replicate. What awakens a mycoplasma? Everyone has mycoplasmas lying dormant in degenerative cells waiting for an opportune time to “awaken.” Mycoplasmas monitor a change in your immune system, your pH, and the oxygen level in your body. An event - an emotional or physical trauma awakens
mycoplasmas. Ask anyone who is sick if he or she had a trauma before they got sick and they will usually say, “Yes.” “I got a divorce,” or “I lost my job,” or “my spouse died,” for example. Trauma and very stressful situations (ex: your job) cause your body to go into “fight or flight” mode, and your body becomes “acidic” (a change in pH). Depending where you are genetically weak or if you have damaged tissue is where mycoplasmas first attack. They will always take the path of least resistance, for example, a smoker’s damaged lung tissues. Mycoplasma Infections Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, leukemia, non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, diabetes, multiple sclerosis, rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, colon cancer, breast cancer, lung cancer, prostate cancer, Irritable Bowel Syndrome, Crohn’s, psoriasis, Carpal tunnel, chronic fatigue, fibromyalgia, heart disease (plaque), cataracts (plaque), Grave’s disease, hormonal imbalance, Lou Gehrig’s disease, scleroderma, urinary tract infections, pelvic inflammatory disease, kidney failure, pancreatic cancer, brain cancer, liver cancer, and asthma, just to name a few.
If you have a mycoplasma infection, don’t despair. There are safe effective treatments that kill mycoplasmas. The nicotine patch, hemp (marijuana), bloodroot, oleander—these plants are antimicrobial. They contain high levels of nitrogen, a plant’s natural defense against both insects and bacteria. Colloidal silver is also antimicrobial and an IV of silver is what I personally received that got me well. I understand how you, the reader, may find all of the above hard to believe. Ten years ago I, too, was skeptical, but I asked questions. I did my research. I got answers. Do your own research. Learn how to protect yourself from disease and cancer by educating yourself. My medical records are proof that I was gravely ill and got well. They are on my web site www.lindaemmanuel. com Next month: Alkalize or Die!

HIBERNATION (IS IT ONLY JUST FOR BEARS?) by Maggie Blais, LMT
Summer is officially over, the days are getting shorter and colder, and I’m pretty sure that we’re all slowing down a bit. I know that I am. I have a very strong urge to burrow into my flannel sheeted bed with a pile of good books and wait out the winter, emerging in March well rested, warm, and up to date on the latest literary classics. While I suspect that I’m not alone with this idea, unfortunately our friends, family members, and bosses would probably frown upon us “checking out” until spring. We can, however, look at the winter as a great season to take a time out. Assuming that you have stocked up on bread and milk, being shut in due to stormy winter weather can actually be a rather lovely time to detach from the worry and stress that the outside world can create. Take a page from the bear’s hibernation handbook and focus on the gentle in and out of deep breathing, conserve your energy, and be aware of your heartbeat slowing down which will help blood pressure decrease. When you do have to leave the cave to go, for instance, to your massage appointment, remember to bundle up and take your time. Which brings us to the subject
of getting massage in the winter. We (of course) highly recommend it. Massage is a wonderful way to step away from the stress of daily doings and spend an hour or more decompressing. It’s great for helping the circulation and loosening up the muscles that may have been overused or become cramped from snow shoveling, scraping ice, or digging out the car. For a really lovely, warming experience, try a hot stone massage. During this session, the therapist uses hot basalt rocks as tools to work into tight muscles and knots, creating a soothing relaxing response. Bears would like hot stone work. You will too. The thing is, since the holidays are here, you’re probably going to have to go out in the cold anyway. It’s a perfect time to treat yourself or someone you care about to a cozy, relaxing 90 minute massage (with or without the natural, grounding forces of hot stone). We here at Creekside Massage would be happy to light the fireplace and provide you with a quiet, toasty cave away from home. Give us a call. We’re not hibernating this year, so we can be here for you. Call Us: (636) 220-8036 or online at www.creeksidemassagestl.com
DECEMBER TEA TALK ‘Liquorice Root’
by Kevin McDonnell, PhD
Trinkets Tea and Me, a teashop in downtown Kirkwood, located at 217 S. Kirkwood Rd. between Spencer’s Grill and Imo’s, has expanded to nearly 100 premium loose leaf teas for 2014. As always, the teas are at the lowest prices in the St. Louis area. These organic teas may offer numerous health benefits. We are approaching the season for colds, the flu, and other viral infections. There are natural treatments that can actually kill viruses and shorten the duration of the illness. There are several antiviral teas. Green Teas contain flavonoids called catechins which seem to inhibit viruses. Researchers in China indicated that these catechins in Green Tea act by blocking viral enzymes that prevent the viruses from replicating. Liquorice Root which is found in our “Throat Therapy Tea” has also been shown to inhibit viruses. Finally, Calendula Tea is known for numerous healing properties. This Tea is very high in beta carotene which can boost the immune system and is also considered to be antibacterial and antiviral. Trinkets Tea and Me offers all of the above Teas, including
many award winning Teas. We have over 15 Green Teas along with the other Teas stated above. We always suggest that you do your own review of research and claims, discuss the information with your physician, and draw your own conclusions on the possible health benefits of various Teas. However, note that research studies are likely to use the Best Premium Teas. So, please don’t “shortchange” yourself. Buy Premium Teas and save money at the same time. Come to Trinkets Tea and Me, an alternative to the “Overpriced High Pressure Mall Store”. Enjoy a relaxing pressure free atmosphere where you can discuss Teas, pay the best prices in town, and maybe hear a song from Tina “Kirkwood’s singing Tea lady”.

wellness HIKING THE HIDDEN FOREST by Michelle Biever
Discover the natural beauty of Englemann Woods, one of the last old growth forests in Missouri. Acquired in 1982 by the Missouri Department of Conservation from MO Botanical Gardens and named for physician and botanist George Englemann, an advisor to Henry Shaw, this 150 acre area offers
hikers a chance to explore the Missouri River hills. Surrounded by trees, be sure to stand back and marvel at the rays of sunshine crisscrossing through the amazing foliage canopy above. Some of the larger trees dating back 200 years are three feet in diameter and 100 feet tall. As you descend into the valley you may find yourself swinging along the hollow from a vine or two. Depending on the season, the spring wildflowers as well as striking autumn colors create picturesque panoramic views. For the bird watcher, the woods are home to the warbler and woodpecker. The creek bed was dry this fall but is usually trickling in the spring. Don’t miss the photo opportunity under the “arch” tree atop the ridge. The marked mile and a half loop, narrow in some spots, is downhill going in and an uphill climb coming out. Be sure to bring water, wear your hiking shoes and grab a walking stick as the trail can
be a little uneven and is leafed covered in the fall. Keep an eye out for the trail markers on the trees. A stop at Heads General Store is always a treat open weekdays from 7:304:00. If you feel like traveling to Labadie enjoy a delicious lunch or dinner at the Hawthorne Inn. Interested in a weekend getaway? Check out the Studio Inn or The Gardens at Malmaison. From Wildwood’s Highway 100/Route T junction take Route T west towards St. Albans approximately six miles. After passing the Firehouse continue up the hill where you will see the Englemann Woods Conservation sign on your right. For those hiking with a group, carpooling is recommended as parking is limited. Enjoy this hidden gem of a hike!

DENTURES: EMBRACING YOUR NEW SMILE
Many seniors regret the day they had dentures done. Today, full dentures are not the only choice for many seniors. Because of all the advances being made with laser therapy and time-released antibiotics, patients are less frequently encountering loss of teeth from gum disease. If the loss of teeth does occur, patients now have the opportunity to replace them with beautiful, realistic implants. What about those who have already chosen full dentures, and are unsatisfied? There are numerous options available. Implants can be placed so that the denture snaps into place or is fixed into place by screws. For those who are not eligible for traditional implants, there are mini implants. Minis are usually less expensive and require less bone to be present in order to be placed. If you have been told in
the past that you were ineligible for implants, now is the time to get a second opinion. Dr. Allan Link at The DentaLink says that many seniors, who were told implants were not an option, may be eligible because of the advances in 3D imaging, surgically guided techniques, and the new smaller implants. For some seniors, implants are just not an option due to health risks and the desire to avoid the cost and hassle of surgery. For those patients, Dr. Link would like to clarify that not all dentures are created equal. He uses a new system of techniques to fabricate an optimum denture that he calls “The Columbia Denture,” named after Dr. Jack Turbyfill from Colombia, SC. There are three basic pieces to a denture: The first is the bite. It must be
balanced in order for the jaw muscle to be aligned so the patient may chew comfortably. Dr. Link uses a technique that creates close contacts on the top surface of the teeth to ensure that the alignment is functional. The second piece of the puzzle, possibly the most important, is esthetics. The patient needs to try in a mock-up of the denture to assess the comfort, and then must give their approval before the final denture is fabricated. The third and final piece is the fit of the denture. This is when Dr. Link takes the processed denture, and places a malleable impression material into it. This material, like a wax, never hardens, which allows it to form perfectly to the patient’s gums. The patient will wear this home for a period of time, thereby creating a functional impression.
If you would like more information on how to prevent gum disease, or if you currently have gum disease, please contact Dr. Allan Link at the DentaLink. HOLIDAY GIFT IDEAS by Gloria Miller
C
hristmas is right around the corner and if you need some ideas for the active person in your life, look no further! I have ideas from the ‘money is no object’ to the more realistic, ‘good idea, I can afford this’ range. I can dream can’t I? If money were no object, I’d love the gift of a walking or biking tour of any city in Europe! I’d love to see castles, eat French and Italian food, visit museums and shop anywhere! Can you imagine walking or biking along the Amalfi Coast or through vineyards in Tuscany or Provence? How about a stroll along the Seine River ending in Paris? The Scottish Highlands are in my top ten places to go. What a beautiful way to see the countryside and get your
exercise too! There are many web sites that offer vacations for people who might like an adventure. I briefly looked at: thewayfarers.com; rei.com and backroads. com. They all offer several destinations, accommodations and meals, but airfare isn’t always included to and from the destination. Walking or biking tours are also available in most destinations around the world including the US. If money is no object, then the world is your oyster! How about a little more down to earth? Consider equipment like a treadmill, rowing machine or an elliptical for those cold or wet days when going outside isn’t an option, or you just don’t feel like it. These machines can be the start of your home gym, and then there’s no excuse not to exercise and be fit. You can always add weights, bands and stability balls! I’d love to receive a gift of classes, wouldn’t you? Yoga, spinning, water aerobics, and Zumba are just a few classes that most health facilities offer. My sore muscles would also appreciate a
gift certificate for a massage! Depending on where you go, massages can vary from $60 to $100 an hour. Dressing for outdoor activities can be stylish and a little easier on the wallet. Whether it’s hot and humid or freezing cold, appropriate clothing is essential right down to the socks you wear. The saying goes – cotton is rotten! Active people prefer dri wik clothing for all seasons because it wicks away the moisture from your body. Sporting goods stores, Marshall’s and Target carry a variety of styles and manufacturers in a range of prices. Accessories make awesome gifts: FitBits, polarized sunglasses, shoes, gloves, yoga mats, yoga blocks and bolsters, hats and gloves make great gifts! Prices on these items have a huge range depending on what you buy and where, but the reality is being active leads to a healthy lifestyle and that’s priceless! I wish all of you a happy and healthy holiday season!

Anne Weibert, Vice President of DIRECTIONS Tours. I have been very fortunate to travel to many places throughout the world but when I’m asked my favorite destination, I don’t hesitate at all: It’s ALASKA! I love majestic landscapes and they just don’t get any bigger or more majestic than our 49th state. In a world of technology and instant media access, we, as human beings, need a place to retreat to and replenish our souls. We need to see and hear the ancient sound of glaciers calving into a cold sea. We need to see a mama grizzly bear and her sow digging up roots in Denali National Park. We need to see Bald eagles soaring past mountain tops and we need to see a humpback whale breach out of a calm and steady sea. We need to reconnect with the primal, wild
parts of our world and when we do, our own souls rejoice and we become replenished. It is a privilege to share this part of our world with others on DIRECTIONS Tours. June is such a beautiful month to journey here, as the mountaintops are still snow covered and all of the animals are waking up and exploring the beginnings of summer. It’s the start of the Alaska season at this time of year and the towns aren’t overrun with tourists like they will be later in the summer. The weather in June is just perfect for exploration. I recommend that my travelers layer as we typically experience weather that ranges from the mid 50’s to near 80 degrees. So, what do I like to do while in Alaska? The very first thing I do is breathe deeply. There is nothing that compares to fresh Alaskan air; it feels like you are breathing for the very first time in your life. In this case, it’s good to inhale! Exploring the local galleries and eateries is something I always look forward to. I never miss the opportunity to have a meal of fresh crab legs and lobster bisque at Tracy’s King Crab Shack ( a discreetly hidden treasure in Juneau!) Exploring Creek Street in Ketchikan and touring Dolly’s Brothel is always a highlight as is
L A ND & CRUISE TOURS taking in the wonderful, hip art at Coho Soho Art Gallery. I make time to walk the trails and neighborhoods and marvel at the precariously perched Cliffside homes accessed only by long, narrow wooden stairs. I wonder what it would be like to live here and climb those steps every day. Haines, Alaska is
happy to see their customers and take the time to make you feel welcome. I sit in a pub and enjoy an Alaskan White, a glorious local brew. I catch a ferry to Skagway and walk the wooden planked town where the gold rush began in 1897 and I think about how brave and daring those Klondikers
Cruising in Alaska’s Majestic Glacier Bay another port that I always look forward to visiting and and I revel in its early history. I like to see how the old Army Barracks are coming along every year, as people are treasuring them and renovating them into the handsome buildings that they deserve to be. Ambling through the Alaskan Indian Arts building I watch skilled Tlingit carvers slowly create wondrous totem poles out of raw wood. I explore small galleries where the owners are
must have been. I book passage on the White Pass narrow gauge railroad far into the wilds to Whitehorse, and feel joyous when I spot a black bear. Lighthearted is how Alaska makes me feel and that feeling always lasts a very long time. Save money and stroll the sights with me, your personal Alaska guide! I am thrilled to journey again! Continued from cover (Jilly’s Cafe & Steakhouse)... ...apple wrap and a fried grouper sandwich. And is if this isn’t enough to offer, diners can order standards such as hamburgers, ribs and pizza. Jilly’s Cafe and Steakhouse offers King Kut Tuesdays where patrons may order a 10 ounce steak for 10 dollars. Happy hour occurs from 3:30-6:30, Monday to Friday and folks can find all you can eat fried grouper and clams for $14.99 on Wednesdays and Fridays. Jilly’s is located at 1630 Gravois Road in High Ridge, Missouri. 636-449-4500 I sat down with owner Dana Gisi recently to learn a little bit more about Jilly’s Cafe Steakhouse. Anne: Anne Weibert, Cuisine Editor Dana: Dana Gisi, Jilly’s Cafe’ & Steakhouse Dana: My husband Joe and I opened Jilly’s Cafe and Steakhouse about eight and a half years ago and we have lived in this community for over twenty five years. We came in for dinner one night years ago and our server happened to mention that the restaurant was for sale and that’s how we ended up here. Anne: This piques my curiosity...had you been in the restaurant business before? Dana: Yes, both my husband and I spent many years in this industry. Prior to working here I worked at Harry’s West in Ballwin for many years. I actually started in this business in North Carolina and moved back to St. Louis around 1980. The first big restaurant that I worked in was The Ground Round next to the Esquire. Anne: You love the restaurant business, don’t you? Dana: (laughter) Yes, I do. I did try to leave it once and went to school for something completely different but I’ve always ended up back in it!
Anne: I know you wear many hats as owner but what is your favorite role here? Dana: That is a difficult question....I really enjoy the baking and do a lot of it. I love baking desserts. Anne:
What is your most requested dish? Dana: Chicken Spedini and my chocolate bread pudding.
Anne: What is your favorite food indulgence? Dana: Wow, it’s hard to pick one! I am gratefully one of those people who can eat just about anything. I really like fresh vegetables and we do grow a lot of our own. Anne: What do you cook for yourself at home? Dana: I don’t actually cook at home. (Laughing) Anne: Does your menu reflect seasonal changes? Dana: Yes, it does. We have a basic menu that we use all the time but other things do change. We have specials and we offer different hot soups in the winter and chilled soups in the summer. We make a fabulous watermelon gazpacho. This winter season finds us offering chicken pot pies and the like. Anne: How many hours a week do you put in? Dana: About seventy five hours and we are open seven days a week. Anne: where does your inspiration come from? Dana: I love being in the dining room and talking to my customers. I love seeing things go well and diners enjoying their experiences. Anne: How do you keep patrons returning? Dana: The food, of course, keeps them returning and I think most
people love the feeling here. Most of our staff has been here from the beginning and so, personal relationships have formed and that’s a special thing. Anne: How many people do your banquet rooms hold and what type of functions take place there? Dana: The space with the fireplace holds about fifty five people and the garden room holds up to one hundred and twenty. We host many baby showers and graduations, all sorts of events. Anne: if you weren’t in the restaurant business what would you be doing? Dana: I intended to become a psychologist but here’s where I landed! Anne: Your building is a bit hard to find. Dana: Yes and that’s lead to mostly local customers but some folks find us while taking a Sunday ride. Some people think we are far away but we’re really not. We are just a few minutes from 141 and Highway 30. Anne: You mentioned that you were from St. Louis originally. So, you might suspect what my next question will be. Dana: Ah, the high school question. I started out at Kirkwood High School but spent my senior year at Maplewood! Anne: Dana, thank you for your time. Dana: You are very welcome...stay warm out there.

FOUR BASIC ESTATE PLANNING DOCUMENTS by Michael J. Corgiat, ChFC
Estate planning can be difficult and confusing. Here are four basic ways to plan. The best way to be ready for major life and death decisions is to properly plan ahead. When it comes to your estate, this means an allencompassing look at the decisions to be made, who makes them, and who gets what. There are generally four major documents you need to prepare so that your estate is in order. A financial power of attorney is one of the most important steps in estate planning. Whoever you name as your financial power of attorney makes all of your financial decisions. By specifically picking
someone to make those decisions, you help eliminate controversy and stress. You also avoid the costly and lengthy legal process of the court making your decisions. A will is the central part of your estate plan. Your will simply states who will receive various parts of your estate, including savings, homes, and other assets. By specifically laying out each asset and what person or charity it will be distributed to, you make your wishes clear. Although you won’t avoid probate, a will may help reduce much of the court and the government involvement in your estate. A living will is one of the most crucial documents in terms of medical decisions. Simply stated, a living will spells out what specific medical treatments you do or do not want in the case of a medical emergency that leaves you unable to make medical decisions. Major medical choices, such as whether or not to resuscitate, or whether or not to be put on artificial respiration can be decided within the living will. But a living will is only half of the medical documents you should prepare within your estate planning. The
other is a medical power of attorney. A medical power of attorney is a decision to appoint someone to make medical decisions if you cannot. If you don’t have a medical power of attorney (also known as a health care proxy), the decision automatically goes to your spouse. If you are unmarried, then it goes to adult children or parents. By specifically designating someone to make the decisions, you make it clear who you want in charge, and what you want done if the worst happens. While these situations are never easy, by making it obvious who you want to make decisions and what decisions you want them to make, your wishes are clear and it eliminates the opportunity for someone else to claim otherwise. These are simply the four basic documents you’ll need when planning for your estate. There are many details to each document, and many details regarding your overall estate, including taxes. It’s usually best to find a financial professional and qualified estate planner to give you advice. By being prepared and educated, and working with a financial professional, you can make

VETERANS BENEFITS: WHO, WHAT, HOW?! by Mark Easley, Attorney at Law
Who is Eligible for Veterans Affairs Basic Pension and Aid and Attendance? A pension is a benefit that the VA pays to wartime veterans who have limited or no income and who are at least 65 years old or, if under 65, are permanently or completely disabled. There are also “Death Pensions,” which are need based for a surviving spouse of a deceased wartime veteran who has not remarried. What Are Aid and Attendance benefits? Aid and Attendance is a benefit paid by Veterans Affairs to veterans, veteran spouses or surviving spouses. It is paid in addition to a veteran’s basic pension. The benefit may not be paid without eligibility to a VA basic pension. Aid and Attendance is for applicants who need financial help for in–home care, to pay for an assisted living facility or a nursing home. It is a non– service connected disability benefit,
meaning the disability does not have to be a result of service. You cannot receive non–service and service– connected compensation at the same time. Aid and Attendance benefits are paid to those applicants who: • Are eligible for a VA pension • Meet service requirements • Meet certain disability requirements • Meet income and asset limitations
What are the Service Requirements for Aid and Attendance? A veteran or the veteran’s surviving spouse may be eligible if the veteran: • Was discharged from a branch of the United States Armed Forces under conditions that were not dishonorable AND • Served at least one day (did not have to be served in combat) during a wartime period (WWI, WWII, Korea, Vietnam, or Persian Gulf War) and had 90 days of continuous military service.
What are the Disability Requirements for Aid and Attendance? Veterans, spouses of veterans or
surviving spouses can be eligible for Aid and Attendance benefits if they meet any of the following disability requirements:
• The aid of another person is needed in order to perform personal functions required in everyday living, such as bathing, feeding, dressing, toileting, etc. • The claimant is bedridden • The claimant is in a nursing home due to mental or physical incapacity • The claimant is blind, or very nearly blind
What are the Income Requirements for Aid and Attendance? The claimant’s countable family income must be below a yearly limit set by law. Countable Income means income received by the claimant and his or her dependents. It includes earnings, disability and retirement payments, interest and dividends, and net income from farming or business. A claimant must report all income, but the VA will exclude any income that the law allows. Public assistance, like SSI, is not counted as part of countable income. The annual income limits for the Aid
and Attendance program are higher than those set for the basic pension. If you or a loved one is a U.S. veteran and meet the disability and service requirements listed above, it is advisable to contact a professional firm well-versed in VA benefits. Judy’s Tips For December
Do YOU Need Extra Help Paying for Medicare Health Care Costs? If you are on Medicare, how do you know if you qualify for any assistance program to help pay for premiums or health care or prescriptions? It is confusing, so stay with me! There are several programs available which can help. First of all is one called Missouri Rx or abbreviated as MO Rx and it provides help with prescription co-pays. At this time, MO Rx is not taking any new applications because the money budgeted is complete being utilized. Hopefully, more funds will be available next year, so the qualifications are an annual gross income under $21,660 for a single person and under $29,140 for a married couple. You may NOT enroll if you are in MO
HealthNet (Medicaid), or if you have an employer-sponsored prescription plan. Another program also helps with prescription co-pays and with drug plan premiums. It is known as “Extra Help” and can be accessed on the Medicare.gov or the SSA.gov websites. There is a monthly income limitation that will adjust the amount of “extra help” you receive. There is also a limit of assets, above the value of your home and one vehicle, but not counting household items. If you are single, the limit is $13,440 and for a married couple the limit is $26,860 in countable assets. Overall, if you are below the asset limit and have an income less than $1300 per month and are single, you should check out this option. If you

are married, and your combined income is less than $1800 per month with the married limit in countable assets, you should likewise apply. You must have a drug plan, or have a Medicare Advantage Plan to use this program. There are more programs for people of limited assets and income. You can ask at a social security office if you don’t like using the computer. In the meantime, enjoy the winter, and the holidays, and the end of 2014!

MISSOURI’S FIVE STAR GENERAL LOCAL AUTHOR RELEASES NEW BOOK
The Soldier’s General: Omar Bradley and the United States Military in Peace and War Affton resident Janice A. Petterchak recently completed a well-received biography of General Omar Bradley, one of the most significant individuals in twentieth century military history. A native of Randolph County, Missouri, Bradley (1893-1981) graduated from the U.S. Military Academy in 1915 with Dwight D. Eisenhower, and both would achieve the rank of five-star General of the Army. Prior to World War II, Bradley served at several U.S. posts and completed advanced courses at Fort Leavenworth and the Army War College. During the war, he was assigned to General George S. Patton’s North African command and saw action in both Tunisia and Sicily. Then promoted over Patton, Bradley led all U.S. troops in the D-Day invasion of Normandy, followed by the campaigns of Western Europe--achieving international acclaim as the “soldier’s general.” After the war, fellow Missourian President Harry S. Truman chose Bradley to head the Veterans Administration, implementing the 1944
“G. I. Bill” for thousands of returning service members. Two years later he succeeded Eisenhower as Army Chief of Staff and during the Korean War served as the nation’s first Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. Following that four-decade military career, Bradley spent some twenty years in the defense industry. As chairman of the Bulova Company during the Vietnam conflict, he led the firm’s transformation from watchmaking into one of America’s foremost military contractors. And, through a best-selling memoir and as adviser for the award-winning movie Patton, Bradley became a highly influential contributor to the public memory of World War II’s “Greatest Generation.” Petterchak spent seven years researching and writing the Bradley story, studying material at West Point, the U.S. Army Military History Institute, the Moberly public library, and the Truman and Eisenhower Presidential libraries, along with reviewing newspaper and magazine articles and military histories. Prior to her writing career, she served as director of the Illinois State Historical Library and as president of the Sangamon County (Illinois) Historical Society. She is a
member of the Society of Midland Authors and the St. Louis Writers Guild.
The Soldier’s General (296 pages) is available from Legacy Press (Legacypress.homestead.com)
for $20, and $3.99 shipping ($1 for each additional book) Mailing address: 11381 Mallard Drive, Rochester IL 62563. also available at STL Books, 100 W. Jefferson, Kirkwood, MO 63122. metro “IF I CAN DO IT, YOU CAN DO IT!” by Brigitte Ranae
“If I can do it, you can do it!” This was the response of Marian Brickner when asked what message she wanted to give to people just before heading to France to fulfill a dream. This 77-year old single, retired, mother of six approached Karen Hoffman, the founder of Gateway to Dreams in Chesterfield, less than four months prior to fulfilling her dream. Marian’s desire was to complete her documentary of Lucy’s family, a bonobo which had been relocated from the U.S., to Romagne, France. She had been capturing the story of Lucy’s family for four generations and Lucy recently gave birth to another piece of this captivating lineage. Marian knew she had to get to France to conclude her documentary but finances and other obstacles stood in her way. Regardless of the challenges, she pursued her dream, and encourages others to do the same. As a professional animal photographer, Marian believes every life has a story worth sharing; especially the bonobo, which is a type of endangered great ape and is the closest existing relative to humans. This artist of images simply wants to get to know the individual in front of the camera, which stems
from her deep appreciation for all life, regardless of shape, size, or species. Marian stated that she, “uses her camera to pay respect to the life in front of her.” Marian’s desire is to bring awareness of these endangered individuals to the world and hopefully preserve their life by sharing the story of Lucy the bonobo and her family. After giving a presentation at Gateway to Dreams where Marian shared her desire with a group of dreamers, she was able to get to France. In less than three months, 44 people supported her by contributing over $3,000 which funded the trip. Upon returning in mid-September, Marian was happy to report the trip went very well and she was able to capture some amazing photos. She recently published some of them in her latest book, Bonobo Lucy and Her Baby Yuli, and is available for speaking engagements to educate and inspire others. When asked about her thoughts on Gateway to Dreams, Marian replied, “dreams are so important, and they impact so many people. The ability to feel safe enough to dream is paramount to our wellbeing.” Marian Brickner is not only a dreamer and respecter of all life, but an inspirational world-changer, and her
message is, if she can do it, so can you! Perhaps you have a dream, or maybe a longing to realize your dream, but are not quite sure how to go about making all the pieces fall into place? Gateway to Dreams believes if you share your dreams with others, then others will help make your dreams come true. Time and time again, people like Marian have witnessed this very truth with the support of this nonprofit organization. If you would like help uncovering your dream, or need assistance in making your dream a reality, Gateway to Dreams is the place for you! To give feet to your dreams, feel free to call 636-536-7700 for an appointment, check out the calendar of events online at http://www.gatewaytodreams. org, and definitely attend the DREAMFEST, held the third Thursday of each month from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m., at 97A Chesterfield Mall, Chesterfield, Missouri 63017. Our mission is to rescue homeless, abused and neglected dogs and cats, provide any necessary medical care or behavioral help they need, and then place them into loving permanent homes. All Paws is made up entirely of foster homes, which allows us to better evaluate each animal and place them in homes that are well-suited to their needs and the needs of their future owners. All animals are spayed/neutered, vaccinated, heartworm tested (dogs) or FIV/FeLV tested (cats), and microchipped before being placed for adoption. dakota
Dakota is a six month old brindle mixed breed, weight 35 pounds. She was found abandoned in a ditch, and her rescuers quickly discovered she is blind. The vet believes she was born blind, and she has no other health issues or ongoing medical needs. She gets around so well that people often doubt that she is blind at all. She is very friendly and good with strangers and with other dogs and cats.
G’day Mate! My name is Joey. I am looking for the perfect family to make my own. Let me tell you a bit about myself. I’m a fun-loving, super snuggly kind of dog looking for someone to hang out with. I weigh about 25 pounds, so I am not one of those little dinky chihuahuas. I enjoy sitting in laps, being loved on by my human friends and I get along well with other small dogs and even cats. I am housebroken! Sometimes I am a little shy at first but I warm up quickly, especially if you give me treats. I really like treats! If you have not noticed yet, I am a special doggy. I came to All Paws with an injury that required me to have my back leg amputated. This has not slowed me down in the least bit. In fact, can still run faster than some of my doggy counterparts! A game of tag is always a fun adventure. I would love to find a home where I can snuggle up with my owners, give lots of kisses and live the life I dream of. Will you help me find a home? If you would like to meet me, email my foster mom at jeanine.rescue@gmail.com
weezer Weezer is an 11 year old Miniature Schnauzer that was picked up as a stray. She acts much younger than her age. She had been very neglected. She was diagnosed with dry eye and will need to have medicine put in her eyes daily for the rest of her life. Won’t you help this little girl find a good home to live out the rest of her life? Her vetting is not quite complete, but we are taking applications now. Go to allpawsrescue.info and fill out an application. She should be available by the end of November. Our adoption events are every Saturday at either the St. Charles or O’Fallon MO PetSmart. Please check our website for schedule.
