Sizzlin'
in St. Louis by Debbie Wheeler
It’s time to celebrate another patriotic birthday St. Louis! Lights all throughout the city can be seen majestically illuminated in varicolored shades of the Red, White and Blue all this month as St. Louisans gather in various places; meeting Mother Nature’s challenge during these sizzlin’ hot July summer days and nights, to find ways of staying cool and having fun while doing it.
Beating the heat in St. Louis during the month of July can be a challenge. One of the most delightful places you can catch a twinkling array of colors in our fabulous city is at the Citygarden, downtown. Annie Vogt and “the boys”, seen on the cover of this month’s issue (see below), enjoyed an invigorating stroll by the garden’s waterfall as it splashed over the 1,100-ftlong polished green granite-capped wall cascading into the serpentine shaped pool depicting the Missouri and Mississippi Rivers. The garden offers a refreshing welcome to everyone. It is pet friendly (the only space off limits to our furry friends are the pools) and it’s all absolutely free! Often referred to as an “Urban Oasis”, the garden boasts of sculptures, plants, fountains and architecture all in one location. The best place to chill and have fun in the garden is
the infamous splash plaza which has a grid of pulsating jets of water shooting up 6 feet high from 102 nozzles in different patterns, illuminating a colorful array of custom red, white and blue lighting at night. BEAUTIFUL Art Hill, and the grounds where the 1904 World’s Fair was held, will be swarming with spectators enjoying the breathtaking highlights of another, St. Louis, July 4th celebration this year at Forest Park. Fair St. Louis website quips: “There’s no question. Forest Park is an iconic location to host this year’s fair. Just ask the 1904 World’s Fair. The ice cream cone and the hot dog have it to thank for their very existence. And this year, the ancestors of those fairgoers are invited to come back to the scene of the hoopla and create memories all their own”.
on the cover...
In addition to the delectable edibles that made their debut over 100 years ago, the fabulous Gateway to the West, my friends, also boasts of other July celebration interests that happened in conjunction with the 1904 World’s Fair. The first Olympic Games ever held in the USA, were during this time period, and St. Louis was the host city. The games were held August 29 until September 3, 1904, as part of an extended sports program lasting from July 1 to November 23, 1904, at what is now known as Francis Field on the campus of Washington University. These competitions also were the first where gold, silver and bronze medals were awarded for first, second and third place. There were 12 Nations, 651 participants and 91 events. Decathlon, freestyle wrestling, boxing
and a dumbbells’ event all made their debuts at the 1904 Olympics. In St. Louis, we have spectacular things to do and celebrate! So... stay cool, ignite the fireworks and shout with delight: “Happy Birthday USA”, and also a Happy 112th Birthday USA Summer Olympics! Until next month… Be Well, Be Active and Live Life to its fullest my friends. St. Louis Lifestyles ARE… better after 50!
All my best, Debbie
ANNIE AND “THE BOYS” OF SUMMER by Annie Vogt
When asked to be a part of Active Lifestyles Magazine’s July issue, I excitedly said YES! At 68, my life just keeps getting better, and that, in a huge part, is due to my dynamic duo: Edgar Alan Poodle and Gordon the Woodle, known by all as “The Boys”. Edgar is a Standard Poodle and Gordon is a Poodle/Wheaton mix who run my show and share my life experiences: whether by being the principal part of a program at Northview High School which serves kids with disabilities (that) include physical and emotional trauma; many of them coming from terribly dysfunctional homes or having gone through a series of
foster homes and/or being in environments’ of drugs and abuse. “The Boys” are active members of St. Peter’s Episcopal Church by waiting in the comfort of the air-conditioned car listening to the symphony channel and doing doggie bible study (at least that is my request of them) while I attend worship. Also they enjoy giving wonderful “nose Bumps” when I seek out the homeless in the city. Busy! Busy! And they love it. Edgar and Gordon supply the love and devotion that keeps me moving forward in the wonderful callings I experience. Most of the work I do is what I call “planting the mustard seed”. I focus on teens and young adults that have never enjoyed the love and stability that most kids have. Many of their backgrounds are of abandonment; drugs; the streets-all of which create individuals that have no idea of the value and beauty that is inside them. I know that so many great people and groups are out there to give assistance in providing basic needs but it is when the heart is touched or it is when an accomplishment is fulfilled, that the barriers come down and the worth of community (spiritual) is realized and embraced. “Planting the mustard seed,” means to me that not everyone exposed to
positive influences will be able to make the change in their lives, BUT, some will grab on to it and learn how to fly! They go forward with pride and self-worth and will have the love inside to reach out and touch a friend, neighbor or stranger with their life of hope. “The Boys” also are my administrative assistants with the job of keeping me on focus for the “Imagine That” sewing project that is soon to start at The Haven of Grace. “Imagine That” is all about community, sharing stories and receiving the gift of knowing others have hit speed bumps and pulled through. My project partner, Shara Erdel, and I will be teaching the young pregnant ladies the art of sewing, who in turn will be creating changing mats for infants with colorful and vibrant fabrics that excites and gives great feelings of joy. As my assistants, Edgar and Gordon, have their work cut out for them and they do it with nose bumps, kisses, and eyes that are full of trust and love. Their reward is in being constant guests at the best place in their world... PETROPOLIS! Petropolis is a place where, when they arrive, one of their human friends runs out with hugs and takes them to “the place” where their furry friends wait to play with them. Here, they get all the
local news as each smell has a story; it’s doggy heaven! They really don’t know it yet, but Petropolis is going “magical” with a new doggie water park this summer! Games of chase through the water; relaxing in the new shade areas where they can rest and still keep an eye on whose the next furry friend to play with, and best of all, be pampered with love by the humans who make sure all is safe and well.
Haven of Grace information may be found at www.havenofgracestl.org If any have an interest in volunteering in this project please call me, Annie Vogt: 314-520-6267

FIREWORK SAFETY When things go BOOM in the night
For most of us, the Fourth of July is a time to enjoy the company of family and friends, having fun and creating memories - whether at home or on vacation. But for some families, the holiday is a nightmare. Homes each year in Missouri are damaged by wayward fireworks. Thousands of people are injured in accidents. We want your holiday to be happy, but also safe. So here are some tips to help you protect yourself and your property on the Fourth.
Protecting yourself (and others): • To minimize the risk of injury, don’t use consumer fireworks. Attend a public display conducted by professionals in St. Louis or elsewhere. • If using consumer fireworks, always follow instructions. Do not attempt to re-light “duds” or create homemade fireworks. • Never let children handle or light fireworks. Even sparklers, which burn at more than 1,000 degrees, can cause third-degree burns. Kids under the age of 15 account for approximately 40% of fireworks injuries, according to the U.S. Fire Administration. • A responsible adult should always be present when children - even teenagers - are around fireworks. More than half of fireworks injuries happen to those younger than 20 years old.
Protecting your home: • According to the National Fire Protection Association, the best way to protect your home is to not use fireworks at home. • Remember, fireworks can cause grass fires and other types of blazes as well. Make sure you light fireworks in a safe area, away from homes and buildings, as well as other combustible material. Keep a fire extinguisher nearby in case of emergency. • Look out for tree limbs or bushes that could catch fire. Trimming vegetation to keep it away from your home is a good idea anyway, but it could save you from a catastrophic fire on the Fourth of July. • If your gutters have accumulated leaves, pine needles or other flammable material, clean them before using
fireworks near your home. • Finally, if you won’t be home on the holiday, ask a neighbor to keep an eye on your house if others in your neighborhood will be using fireworks. With some common sense and planning, the Fourth of July can be both safe and enjoyable for everyone. Whether you’re staying at home or heading out of town, we hope you have a wonderful time celebrating our independence! Karen Siebert, General Manager Siebert Insurance Agency, LTD. 767 Gravois Rd. THE HAIR WHISPERER: 5-NEW HAIR STYLES & 5-NEW HAIR COLORS FOR SUMMER by Scott Gardner
If there were ever a time to consider switching up your hair look, it’s summer. To survive sweltering weather and beach days, you’ll want a cut that is decidedly low-maintenance and able to stand on its own, sans hot tools and close as wash-and-wear as possible. The summer season is also a perfect time to add a little hair color refresh. You might want to consider something Brighter! Lighter! Livelier! 5-New Hair Styles: Small Changes, Major Impact Bob It: Sometimes hair around your neck and shoulders feels like you’re wearing a hair scarf, which is why stylist Tony
Chavez is a fan of the bob. In addition to the cooling relief it provides, he likes it because “when a strong shape is cut into your hair, it’s nice that everything will basically fall into place.” Baby Bangs: While bangs might seem like the last thing you want in the summer, by keeping it brief you can make it bearable and adorable. For the more daring, a bang about an inch to an inch and a half works on any length hair. This is definitely a fun and flirtatious look, but it’s not for everybody. Long Layers: If you’re looking to grow your hair out, stylist Nathaniel Hawkins says there’s no better time than the present. He prefers long, disheveled layers. “Instead of cutting a straight line, I’m taking large vertical sections and point cutting into the hair to remove split ends and create a very soft, sort of ragged edge for a more organic feeling.” Shag-A-Delic: Look to Cindy Crawford circa mid-90’s for inspiration. There’s a built-in level of dishevelment that’s just perfect for weather and demands imperfection. The key to the unkemptness is by spritzing liberally with beach spray and scrunching hair. Cool AF Hair: This is a freeform haircut that is a versatile lob-like length cut
that’s textured and messy. To retain or enhance your natural wave, we suggest air-drying and spritzing your entire head with a texturizing spray; or, to add waves without wielding a curling-iron, create a few braids, hit them with a blow-dryer, and then unravel them once dry. 5-New Hair Colors: Hint: You Need to Lighten Up Bronze Ombre’: If your hair is on the dark side and high-maintenance hues aren’t really your thing, celebrity colorist David Adams recommends going with two or three slightly lighter complementary colors, “blended through the middle and slightly lighter ones on the ends and around the face, which keeps color away from growth to minimize upkeep.” Warm Honey: For proud brunettes who aren’t convinced that blondes have more fun, simply soften your natural color with amber to honey highlights. Baby Blonde: If you’ve already jumped on the blonde bandwagon or are a rare naturally golden unicorn, we recommend burning even brighter. Specifically with strategically placed baby blond highlights around the face and crown. Creamy Blonde: If you’re cool with keeping a standing appointment with your
colorist, then consider a creamy platinum blonde. There are worse places to wile away a steamy afternoon, than in the airconditioned comfort of your local salon. Matte Blonde: Continuing on the blonde kick, you might want to attempt to be the blondest you can be. We suggest adjusting the shade for your skin tone, so “nude blondes” for olive complexion to baby blonde for paler types. Sunset Reds: We suggest updating deep winter coppers by color-matching your hair to the brilliant shades of summer. Think peaches, apricots, and fiery oranges. As summer get into high-gear, you may want to ditch the stress of long tresses and add a spunky new color to your summer looks. Remember, Hans Wiemann has a Full-Service Salon with 15-expert stylist on staff ready to help you achieve the summer look you’ve been looking for. SUMMER HEAT SURVIVAL! JULY TIPS FOR STAYING COOL
Heat Survival: DIY air-conditioning Remember when refrigerators were iceboxes that contained actual blocks of ice? This stay-cool trick is straight out of the icebox era, though. Make a DIY air conditioner by positioning a shallow pan or bowl (a roasting pan works nicely) full of ice in front of a fan. The breeze will pick up cold water from the ice’s surface as it melts, creating a cooling mist.
H
ealthy and Active
Heat Survival Tip & Treat: Peppermint tea mist Brew a pot of peppermint tea, then stick it in the fridge. Once it’s nice and cold, try putting some into a spray bottle and misting yourself with it. Better than water, the menthol in the tea will give your skin a tingly, cool feeling.
Heat Survival: Spice it Up to Cool Down To cool down, your body depends on the fact that water absorbs heat as it evaporates. As a result, your body could benefit from sweat (or water in general) to stay cool and comfortable. As sweat evaporates from your skin, it takes heat with it, leaving you feeling cooler. That’s where spicy foods, like chili peppers, come in. It may seem weird to eat a “hot” food on a hot day, but the capsaicin promotes sweating (without raising your body temperature), which will eventually evaporate and cool you off. That’s probably why places known for high temperatures, such as India and Thailand, tend to serve some of the world’s spiciest foods! Capsaicin also has the ability to suppress your appetite, fight fat and decrease inflammation.
Heat Survival: Freeze Your Fruit Instead of relying on sugar-filled frozen bars or calorie-enriched ice cream, throw a bunch of grapes in the freezer. They make a great snack and help you stay cool throughout the summer. You can also freeze melon cubes, berries or already-peeled and sliced bananas in plastic sandwich bags to make servingsize frozen treats! Heat Survival: Pressure points You can lower body temperature by applying a bottle with ice-cold water on pressure points like your ankles, wrists, or behind the knees.
Heat Survival: Chill those sheets Chill your bed by folding sheets and pillowcases, placing them in plastic bags, and sticking them in the freezer for a few hours. Then make up the bed just before you go to sleep for sweet (and cool) dreams. Heat Survival: Take a cool shower, but don’t towel dry off When all else fails, take a cool shower to keep your body temperature down and rinse off the sweat. A cool shower is already a great way to help beat the heat. But when you’re done, dry yourself in front of a fan instead of using a towel – the evaporation will help cool you down. You can also use a spray bottle to spritz yourself and get the same effect.
National Father Daughter Take A Walk Day JULY 7th, 2016
National Father Daughter Take a Walk Day (an “unofficial” holiday) is observed annually on July 7th. This day was created to promote the benefits of family bonding time between fathers and daughters as well as the benefits of physical activity. The memories that are made during your time together will stay with you forever. During the summer season there are many wonderful places to walk and enjoy nature as you spend time talking, laughing and bonding. Walking has many health benefits, and the time spent together is more valuable than any other gift you can give one another.

Treasures of Mackinac Island
A very popular summertime destination is Mackinac Island, Michigan. As the heat of a St. Louis summer settles in, the cooler days, sparkling lake waters and sandy beaches are a great escape! As the old saying goes, half the fun is in getting there, and this especially holds true when traveling to Mackinac Island. DIRECTION Tours offers a unique and exciting way going and coming to Mackinac. Our tour travels to the historic small city of Manitowoc, Wisconsin. This city is located on Lake Michigan at the mouth of the Manitowoc River and once boasted a great industry of shipbuilding. This heritage is reflected throughout the town which sits along the Manitowoc River and is truly a delight to visit. It is here that the USS Cobia rests and is open for tour of both her topside and inside, including the torpedo rooms, wardroom, crew’s quarters, engine rooms and much more. The Cobia saw much action in WWII and was lost in May of 1945 during an eight hour depth charging by the Japanese minesweeper Hatsutaka.
www.directionstours.com
During that engagement, she was blasted into the muddy seafloor of the Gulf of Siam, but escaped intact, although heavily damaged. Today she is a National Historic Landmark and has been lovingly restored to her 1945 configuration. The SS Badger is a passenger and vehicle ferry that shuttles between Manitowoc, Wisconsin and Ludington, Michigan. She is the last coal fired passenger vessel operating on the Great Lakes and it is quite special to have the opportunity to take this sixty mile, four hour trip across Lake Michigan. The ferry saves travelers three and a half hours of travel time compared to the 411 mile drive from Manitowoc to Ludington via Chicago. There is plenty of entertainment onboard the ferry including bingo, movies, gift shop and more. Traverse City is found just a short two hour drive from Ludington and is one of our favorite small towns in Michigan. Voted one of the 10 Best Small Towns in America by Fodor’s, Traverse City is a true delight anytime of the year. Here you will find breathtaking natural beauty, up market boutiques, incredible restaurants, lovely wineries, and great local microbreweries. Traverse City is the largest producer of tart cherries in the United States and every year during the first week of July the city hosts the National Cherry Festival, attracting 500,000 visitors! The journey from Traverse City to Mackinaw City is a two hour drive and is visually stunning. The glistening waters, lakeside homes, and gorgeous landscape are a joy to behold. Traveling through the
vacation destination of Charlevoix is a delight, as there is a drawbridge to be traversed and the pleasure of seeing yacht after yacht ply these beautiful waters. Mackinaw City is where we board the passenger ferry over to Mackinac Island. This is such a beautiful crossing of Lake Huron; indoor seating or for those who love the wind in their hair, there is outdoor seating atop the ferry for the twenty minute crossing. It is always a great pleasure to approach Mackinac Island, as she is a gem to gaze upon from the waters. Welcome to Mackinac Island! There are no motorized vehicles allowed on the pristine 3.8 mile island. Mackinac Island served as a strategic point for the Great Lakes fur trade and later the British established Fort Mackinac on the island during the American Revolutionary War. The Fort still stands today and is open for tours which include costumed docents and battle recreations. Mackinac Island first became a popular summer resort destination for the very wealthy in the late 19th century and the entire island is now listed as a National Historic Landmark. Travelers are wooed by the architecture, gardens, galleries, restaurants, history, natural beauty, and the eight mile bicycling trail that follows the island’s perimeter. Downtown streets are filled with fudge shops and tourists are known as “fudgies!” The natural beauty of the island is best experienced by horsedrawn carriage. Narrated carriage tours are always a highlight as the
By Tod DeHart horses make their way through the heavily wooded areas, past the fort, and over to a scenic lookout of a natural carved arch that overlooks the water. The lilacs that drench the island are thick and sweetly scent the air! Mackinac Island has been the setting of two feature films: This Time for Keeps, starring Esther Williams, in 1946 and Somewhere in Time, which was filmed at the Grand Hotel (pictured above) in 1979 and starred both Christopher Reeves and Jane Seymour. The Grand Hotel opened in 1887 and was a summer retreat for vacationers who arrived by lake steamers from Chicago, Erie, Montreal, and Detroit. Our next two nights will be at the fabulous Grand Hotel! The Grand Hotel’s front porch, the longest in the world, became a principal meeting place for all of Mackinac Island in the 1890’s. Today, guests enjoy rocking on the Adirondack chairs that line the massive porch while gazing out past manicured gardens. There are 386 guest rooms, none of which are alike. Travel is fun and exciting, but it is also a a great way to enhance your life in many ways! Travel is proven to be one of the best ways to make your life healthier, happier, stronger and more fullfilled. Actual studies have proven that travel increases well-being, learning experiences, decreased stress levels, and creates memories of a lifetime. In addition, traveling builds stronger relationships, new friendships and connects people to new ideas and cultures. Vacation and relaxation go hand in hand. When leaving home (or work) and adventuring away from “the norm”, we leave our day to day lives and responsibilities far behind. This allows our bodies to reset our biological body clock. Notably, studies have shown decreased stress levels in people who travel. Reducing the amount of stress over just one week away on a trip, travelers registered lower levels of stress hormones in their saliva. Limiting our stress, our bodies no longer synchronize with the clock, but instead, with the sunrise and sunset. It is common knowledge that travel brings people together and builds new and everlasting relationships. Whether you travel alone, with family, or with friends, a vacation get away improves and creates relationships and friendships. In my 20
years of professionaltravel experience, I have taken joy and pleasure in seeing so many new relationships form and grow while adventuring out. One of my greatest joys is introducing single travelers to new people, which ultimately become lifelong friendships. Because of this, I decided to create a more affordable pricing package for single travelers with DIRECTIONS Tours. When traveling as a single, one must pay more money in most cases (due to not spliting hotel costs). This leads to higher single supplemental costs and deters many people from traveling alone. So... I went to work with our vendors and negotiated better rates for our single guests. Now, when traveling with DIRECTIONS Tours, single guests can enjoy our great trips at the same rates of doubles or just a little more. Many single travelers are also leary about traveling alone. Rest assured, you are never “alone” when you are our guests! There are so many great places to explore in 2016. DIRECTIONS Tours of St. Louis is a great place to start your vacation planning! Check out our featured tours and exciting destinations on the next pages! Call us for a full Tour Catalog today!

COPING WITH TURBULENCE AS A PASSENGER AND AN INVESTOR by Jeff Ponte, Edward Jones Advisor
If you’re like many travelers, you get a little nervous when your airplane goes through some turbulence. And if you’re like a lot of investors, you may get somewhat jumpy when the financial markets are volatile. Yet flight turbulence probably isn’t as scary as it seems, and the same may be true for market volatility — if you know how to respond. Let’s look at some positive responses to market movements: • Don’t overreact to turbulence. Turbulence happens on most flights, but passengers are well aware that they can’t “bail out” at 30,000 feet, so they generally don’t panic. As an investor, you also need to avoid panicky behavior — by not taking a “time out” from investing. Over a period of decades, if you were to miss just a handful of the market’s best-performing days, your returns could be dramatically reduced. And the best days often follow some of the worst. So if you’re not invested in the market, you could miss out on
the beginning of a new rally, which is typically when the biggest gains occur. • Balance your “cargo.” The ground crew properly positions an airplane’s cargo to maintain the plane’s center of gravity and reduce the effects of turbulence. When you invest, you also need to achieve balance by owning a variety of vehicles, including stocks, bonds, government securities and certificates of deposit. You’ll want your investment mix to reflect your risk tolerance, goals and time horizon. While this type of diversification can’t guarantee profits or protect against loss, it can reduce the effects of “turbulence” — that is, market volatility — on your portfolio. Over time, your “cargo” (your investments) may shift, becoming too heavy in stocks or bonds relative to your objectives. Consequently, you’ll need to periodically rebalance your portfolio to ensure it’s meeting your needs. • Match your “transportation method” with your goals. If you are flying

of people are the ideal long-term investors — they know that turbulence, in the form of market fluctuations, is normal, because they’ve experienced it many times before. Their perspective isn’t on short-term events, such as volatility, but rather on the voyage toward their “final destination” — i.e., the achievement of their long-term goals. So when you fly, fasten your seatbelt and relax. And when you invest, don’t overreact to short-term events. By following these basic guidelines, you will be a calmer traveler and a better investor.

from New York to Los Angeles, you may experience delays or some changes in the flight plan — but your goal is still to reach Los Angeles as quickly and efficiently as possible. Consequently, you wouldn’t scrap the idea of flying and head to the West Coast on foot. When you invest, you will also encounter events, such as market downturns, that you feel may be slowing you down in your progress toward your longterm objectives, such as a comfortable retirement. But if your objectives haven’t changed, neither should your “transportation method” of reaching them. In other words, don’t abandon your long-term strategy in favor of quick fixes, such as chasing after “hot” stocks that may not be suitable for your needs. • Maintain perspective on your “flight path.” When you’ve flown, you’ve probably observed (perhaps with some envy) some of your fellow passengers sleeping through periods of turbulence. In the investment world, these types

AGING IN PLACE WITH A REVERSE MORTGAGE by Kevin Kohler, Reverse Specialist
The available equity from your home is provided to you It’s an empty nest… your home for so many years where you raised your children and beamed with pride as they moved on to establish their own lives and start their families. The following years
were met with more freedoms to travel and decisions as to what to do with the extra space. As the years continue, however, there become barriers to using parts of your home. The stairs are getting a little harder to get up and down. That nice whirlpool tub turns into a plant garden as it’s too hard to get in and out of. Upper level cabinets now only hold items that are rarely used as it’s become harder to reach or get up to. These barriers are things many people face, that weren’t there just a few years ago. It’s a natural part of aging, which most people don’t even think of it as it’s happening, but ultimately become faced with a decision that something needs to be done. Do you downsize to a condo, or a villa type community that is easier to maintain? Most don’t want to broach the idea of moving in with your children. By and far, most people want to stay in their own
QUALITY OF LIVING Independence Financial Freedom Comfort Age-Friendly With a Reverse Mortgage, you can access equity in your home to:

Renovate your home

home, cherishing the memories and it’s the home of your heart. A good solution to staying in your home is to renovate and remove the barriers that can allow you to enjoy and best utilize your home. You can renovate the bathroom, so that you replace the tub with a walk-in/roll-in shower. Replace the cabinets with new ones that are lower and more accessible. Move the laundry room so that it is on the same level as the bedrooms, so as not having to go up and down stairs to do it, or installing chair lifts that make getting up and down the stairs more convenient. The list can go on and on, as how to make your home the most efficient and accessible to you. There are many Certified Aging in Place contractors and interior designers that can provide a multitude of options for you. But… there’s the cost, and how are you going to pay for it. Some are well off, and can afford to spend the cash to pay for $40,000 - $100,000 worth of renovations. For others, it would take too much of the retirement savings to comfortably live off for years to come. But, you have plenty of equity in your home that is not being used. You can get a Home Equity Line of Credit or a Home Equity loan, but that means taking on what could be a
significant monthly payment. A reverse mortgage can be a great option to utilize that equity to pay for your renovations, without taking on additional payments. With a reverse mortgage, the available equity from the home is provided to you, and you never have to make a monthly payment. It can be provided as a lump sum, or as a line of credit to be used as needed. The loan is repaid upon your permanently leaving the home, or when the last surviving household member passes. Your only requirement is to maintain your taxes, property insurance, and any annual neighborhood dues if applicable. With the additional safeguards for consumers put into place in 2015, the reverse mortgage can be a great option to utilize the equity in your home to maximize the efficiency and comfort of living in your most familiar surroundings. HISTORICALLY SPEAKING... THE KITCHEN FLOOR
by NiNi Harris, Historian
Remember those linoleum floors from the Fifties – with the linoleum squares in that deep red or dappled gray laid in checkerboard patterns. When we were kids pastel-colored linoleums, especially yellows or turquoise, were popular too. Now those floors are trendy again, but today they are considered nostalgic or celebrated as “retro.” But we remember when those floors along with tubular chrome kitchen sets that featured plush chairs upholstered in shiny naugahyde were new and modern. Combine the floors and the chrome kitchen sets with built-in Youngstown metal cabinets and I can visualize the jello salad coming out of the refrigerator. Why it even brings back memories of that most exciting (and rare) culinary experience – the TV dinner, wrapped in aluminum foil. Our kitchen was always oldfashioned, and my grandmother’s kitchen still had the kitchen sink from 1924 and the Hot Point refrigerator from 1937. But when I visited the neighbors, who had a modern kitchen with those chrome chairs and table setting in the middle of the linoleum floor, I knew that I was in the Space Age. I felt like I was only steps away from living like The Jetsons, that cartoon family from a futuristic Utopia. The truth is, the metal cabinets and chrome kitchen furniture may have been products of Post World War II America, a place and time focused on the future, but those linoleum floors were, even then, a product of the past. Linoleum rugs, I have learned, made life much easier for hard working housewives at the end of the Victorian era and the beginning of the 20th century. I stumbled across references to linoleum rugs when I was researching how a workingman’s rooms in 1890’s St. Louis would have been furnished. At that time, the beautiful

hardwood floors were still new and only in the homes of the wealthy. The flooring in most row houses and boarding houses was pine, and often unfinished. Not only was scrubbing these pine floors a tough chore, but the gaps and cracks in the floors allowed for cold drafts. Even with advancements in looms, carpeting was still expensive.; and it was hard to keep clean. Many home owners made oil cloths and tacked them to the floors. A house wife could easily wipe them clean. In summertime, straw or grass matting provided floor coverings. Often ladies’ magazines, however, recommended linoleum rugs. Invented in the early 1860s, linoleum was made of cork and wood dust, oils, resins and mineral fillers on a canvas backing. The linoleum rugs were used in hallways and dining areas especially. Unlike the wood floors, they were easy to wash up. And linoleum sealed the floors and cut the drafts through the cracks. So linoleum served practical roles in humble households for generations before it became part of glamorous, modern 1950’s kitchen. Author/Historian NiNi Harris will present “St. Louis -- the River City” through OASIS STL NiNi Harris, Active Lifestyles Magazine columnist, will explore the historic relationship between the City of St. Louis and the Mighty Mississippi from the founding of St. Louis on bluffs in 1764 through to the current role of river commerce. The program will be offered at the Altenheim, with refreshments (courtesy of the Altenheim) served on the terrace overlooking spectacular river views. ST.L UIS
IT HAPPENED IN ST. LOUIS 50 YEARS AGO…
St. Louis Record Heatwave July 1966 It was July of 1966 and for six straight days, St. Louis was breaking heatwave records over 101 degrees. Heat so intense that the number of air conditioners being used were draining available electricity in the area. The increased use overwhelmed Union Electric Company (now Ameren UE) forcing the company to impose “rolling brownouts”, where neighborhoods took two-hour turns without power to avoid a blackout. Many businesses were said to have shut down and several St. Louisan’s slept in the parks seeking respite from the heat. Notable Quotes: Before the All-Star game on July 12, 1966 when the day’s high was 103 ~baseball’s Casey Stengel said of the second Busch Stadium, then in its first year, “The new park sure holds the heat well.” According to 1966 All-Star Game (Baseball Almanac)
The top story of the 1966 All-Star Game had nothing to do with baseball. It was the blistering one hundred five-degree game time temperature. Spectators in St. Louis’ Busch Stadium were passing out in the stands and smelling salts and oxygen were required in the dugouts. Despite these intense conditions, the game went on as scheduled, although no one wanted to spend much time on the field. The American League took a 1-0 lead against Sandy Koufax in the second when Brooks Robinson hit a one-out liner to left and wound up with a triple when Hank Aaron let the ball slip past him. Robinson scored a few moments later on a wild pitch. The National League tied it against Jim Kaat in the fourth on singles by Willie Mays, Roberto Clemente and Ron Santo. As the game went into extra innings, Tim McCarver singled against Pete Richert. Then after Ron Hunt sacrificed, Maury Wills singled to right driving in the winning run. Some joked that Wills had saved many lives by holding the 100+ degree game to only ten innings.

A woman and her daughter came to see me one evening and took me home that night. Blood isn’t necessarily thicker than water. I have never looked back, because I have everything I dreamed of. I’m pretty sure you have that too. Actually, you should be milking it for all it’s worth. Make sure you have a plush bed fit for a queen, home cooked scraps, the best toys, gourmet treats, and a day at the doggie spa; I digress.
All my best, Willow
Needy Paws Rescue of St Louis, is a 100% volunteer foster-based 501(c)3 organization, saving dogs at high kill shelters, strays, abandoned or owner surrendered. All of our rescued dogs are placed in approved inspected foster homes while waiting for their Forever Family. Needy Paws Rescue receives requests to save dogs every day and it is very hard to decide which dogs to save and those that have to
be left behind. We don’t want to leave any behind, but can only rescue when foster homes are available. We need More Foster Homes. Please help us by being a FOSTER PARENT to a rescued dog. It is such a rewarding opportunity. You supply your Home and your Love. NPR covers expenses, providing you with food, treats, collars, leashes, beds, crates and any other items needed to care for your foster dog. Please consider Fostering a dog and preparing him/her to be adopted to a forever family. Go to www.needypaws.org, fill out a Foster Application and you’ll be on your way to saving a dog’s life. For more information on becoming a foster parent,
