SKIN CARE FOR A NEW YEAR by Kellie Salter
stress, blood nutrients, and oxygen are directed to the vital areas such as our legs and away from nonvital organs such as the skin. So what can you do to recover from the stress of the holidays? Here are some methods to take control of your stress and relax. - Exercise, enjoy a walk, practice yoga. or soak in a hot tub. - Enjoy a massage - Get a full night’s sleep - Find time each day to breathe. Inhale for a slow count of ten and then exhale to a slow count of ten. 2) With the hustle and bustle in December, the company parties, the dinner with friends, and of course the number of large holiday meals, it’s easy to indulge in less than optimal eating habits. Who could resist eating chocolate, or grabbing a quick fast food snack while you are on the go? Start your new years
resolution and incorporate what research suggests are certain foods that slow the aging process. Include foods such as fresh fruits and vegetables, meats and fish. Avoid refined carbohydrates such as flour, sugar, and milk as they accelerate it. - Get enough fatty acids – omega-3 and omega-6 – which are responsible for boosting the skin’s barrier and keeing moisture in and irritants out. Sources include salmon, sardines, walnuts, and flax seed - Incorporate foods rich in vitamin A (such as dark green and dark orange vegetables) and vitamin E ( such as almonds and sunflower oil) - Eat lots of “super” antioxidant foods such as blueberries, blackberries, and prunes to help your skin from free radicals. 3) Exercise is usually at the top of our list as a new years resolution.
Not only will exercise impact those extra pounds added by the holiday season, but it’s an important part of every antiaging skincare program because it increases circulation, which ensures that vital nutrients are delivered to skin cells. If jogging is your thing, you may want to switch to a lower impact option such as biking or swimming. Regular jarring exercise may loosen and tear the microscopic attachments that bind muscles together. Looking to eliminate the lines and wrinkles, reverse your sun damage, or melasma? Are you challenged with sensitive skin or rosacea or suffering from hormonal acne? Give me a call!

With the holidays over, we can leave the stress and potentially unhealthy eating and holiday libations behind us! Certainly a wonderful time to enjoy, but all of this can take a toll on our skin and I’m sure with the new year upon us you’d like to get back to looking radiant and healthy. This month we will be sharing what Katie Rodan and Kathy Fields, of Rodan + Fields Dermatologists and the creators of Proactiv® Solutions feel are the truths and myths to keeping your skin radiant and glowing after the holiday season. 1) Are you looking ashen or sallow? Are the dark circles under your eyes becoming more prominent? Is your hair looking dull and limp? Or are your facial lines and wrinkles more pronounced? If you are experiencing any of this you may be able to attribute it to holiday stress! As our bodies respond to

UNRAVELING THE MYSTERY OF THE THYROID by Christi Gleason, MS, CPT, ERYT-500
The mysterious thyroid is now center stage as more and more people are diagnosed with thyroid conditions. A seemingly innocent gland in the neck, the thyroid affects every cell in the body, yet few people understand it, including those with diagnosed thyroid conditions. Individuals with continued challenges regulating their weight, energy level, and body temperature can bring their
bodies back to balance by appropriately combining Western and Eastern medicine. First, it is important to understand exactly what causes thyroid dysfunction. The thyroid works in union with the pituitary gland to ensure the thyroid can perform its functions, which include regulating blood pressure, heart rate, body temperature, and metabolism. The thyroid produces three hormones: thyroxine, or “T4”; triiodothyronine, or “T3”; and calcitonin; and the pituitary gland produces TSH (Thyroid Stimulating Hormone). As the thyroid releases its hormones into the blood, the pituitary gland evaluates whether or not the thyroid is producing adequate hormone levels for the body to function properly. If not, the pituitary produces more TSH, which stimulates the thyroid to produce more T3 and T4. If thyroid hormone levels are high, the pituitary stops producing TSH. This checks and balance system continues to work as long as both the thyroid and pituitary glands are functioning properly. Dysfunction of either of these glands
causes noticeable physical discomfort. In addition, adequate iodine intake is required to produce thyroid hormones and iodine deficiency will yield deficient thyroid hormone production, as well as appearance of a goiter in the neck. To determine if thyroid dysfunction is present, physicians conduct a TSH test by administering blood work. If the TSH level is high, the patient is considered hypothyroid, which indicates that their thyroid is underperforming. If the TSH level is low, the patient is considered hyperthyroid, which indicates that their thyroid is performing at too high of a level. If the TSH test comes back normal, a patient can still be experiencing thyroid-related challenges, as this test fails to address other associated issues, such as a malfunctioning pituitary gland or thyroid cancer. In addition, the patient may be experiencing thyroid hormone resistance, which occurs when the thyroid produces adequate hormones but the body is unable to use them properly. In extreme cases, doctors have discovered metastasized thyroid cancer in patients whose blood work continued to show
normal TSH levels even after a cancer diagnosis. Therefore, symptomatic patients with normal TSH levels should insist on further testing before ruling out a problem. Often individuals experiencing thyroid issues are treated with medication, but many find little relief of their ongoing symptoms, even after their thyroid activity is regulated. At this point, Eastern practices such as acupuncture, herbal remedies combined with energy work such as qigong or tai chi are recommended. These practices provide great relief by bringing the body back into balance. Patients struggling with ongoing issues report finding full relief after integrating Eastern practices into their lifestyle. Christi Gleason is a thyroid cancer survivor. THE HAIR WHISPERER: MAINTAINING & GROWING BEAUTIFUL HAIR
When we talk about beauty, the importance of beautiful hair cannot be overlooked. Lustrous locks can add so much to your personality, but with today’s active lifestyles, hair products, hair regimen and potentially damaging hair devices, is it a wonder why so many of us have problems with the overall health and condition of our hair? While, the hair generally grows one-halfinch each month, this rate depends on many factors such as genetics, overall health and how well a person takes care of their hair. When it comes to taking care of your hair, it starts with keeping the scalp and hair clean. This is the first

step to improving and maintaining the health of your scalp. • Wash your hair: Regularly to remove all the dirt from pores on the scalp that may clog them and in turn hold back hair. It is also not a good idea to wash your hair daily, because you will strip all the nutrients and natural oils that your hair needs to be healthy. Washing it every other day is much better. • Brush your hair: Brushing when done in a right manner has its own benefits. Brush your hair gently with a boar hair brush or other natural fiber brush as they are soft on your head and scalp. Never brush wet hair, as wet hair is too fragile for brushing and could cause breakage. Brush your hair starting at the scalp and moving to the ends. However, you should avoid excessive brushing. Limit your device use: Try not to put your hair under too much stress with the use of hair dryers, curling irons, and other hair tools that can damage and overprocess your hair and affect its growth negatively. There are several ways to promote healthy hair growth and one way is through stimulating your scalp by the process of rubbing or massaging
the scalp with the intention of increasing blood flow to the area. This is actually an ancient practice that dates back 5,000 years. Stimulating the scalp is not only beneficial for the hair follicle and root but is equally relaxing on the head and neck muscles. While this ancient method is beneficial, it should be complimented with today’s most advanced practice of using laser hair therapy. Low Level Light Therapy (LLLT) that uses cool light lasers to stimulate the red blood cells. Lasers work by converting ATP (Adenosine Triphosphate) to ADP (Adenosine Diphosphate), releasing energy and causing cellular metabolic changes. During this process, additional nutrients and oxygen are provided to the scalp assisting normal chemical processes performed by the cells, increasing overall blood circulation. Lasers, when applied to the scalp and hair, have been proven to improve overall hair quality, promote hair growth, and increase hair shaft diameter. When you pair the laser hair program with a pharmaceutical grade topical regimen that combines modern pharmaceutical science with traditional
natural herbal medicines, it creates an effective program that both stimulates hair growth, and treats thinning hair, but also helps in the treatment of common scalp disorders such as; Plaque Psoriasis of the scalp, Seborrhea & Seborrheic Dermatitis, which are 2-types of dandruff. It also should be noted that many experts in the field of hair loss recommend that (LLLT) works best when combined with Propecia (finasteride) and Rogaine (minioxidil) . Recent studies have shown that Low Level Laser Therapy combined with a mediceutical program including monoxidil is very effective in helping with thinning hair, especially with women. So if you are looking to maintain that beautiful hair you already have or if you are experiencing hair loss or thinning, give the trusted experts at Hans Wiemann a call to set-up your FREE Hair & Scalp Analysis to help you maintain or get your beautiful hair back! TO SUN OR NOT TO SUN, THAT IS THE QUESTION by Marcia Moore, Interior Designer
shade is similar to a view through a regular window screen. They come in different opacities, meaning more or less sun gets through. The lower the opacity the less sun and the better privacy, a higher opacity gives a better view but more sun and less privacy. They also have room darkening and remote control options. This kitchen has a south facing window that gets really bright morning Thank God for the sun! Without it, we wouldn’t be here. But, as with everything else, too much of a good thing can be bad. While solar energy to heat our homes is a very good thing, that same sun can also destroy your drapes, fade your furniture and raise your AC bills. There are many window treatments on the market that claim to keep the sun and heat out, certainly more than I could write about in this article. So, let me just talk about my favorites. WINDOW FILM For a sunroom or a 2 story wall of windows where you don’t want to obstruct the view but need a little help with the heat, this is a good selection. The film is applied directly to your window and deflects the heat and damaging sun rays. There are different levels of protection. The more protection the darker your view, less protection, less change to the view. Kind of like sunglasses. SCREEN SHADES This is a great product for a loft with a window wall, for contemporary rooms where you want a minimalist window treatment, or for any room where you don’t want to spend a fortune on the windows. The view through a screen
sun. We wanted something that would keep out the sun, add some privacy, wasn’t fussy and would clean easily. The screen shade fit the bill perfectly. SILHOUETTES & LUMINETTES Hunter Douglas has a sun control/privacy product that I really like. Picture a wood blind, change the wood slat to a stiff fabric slat, then cover each side of the blind with a sheer fabric panel, or just look at the bathroom picture which shows a Silhouette. When the “slats” are open you have a view similar to looking through a sheer drapery. When they are closed they control heat but still let light into the room. The Silhouette worked well
PUTTING A LID ON KITCHEN FIRES by KJ Spurlock
H

Would you know what to do if a cooking fire broke out on your kitchen stove? For most people the answer is no, which is why kitchen fires are the leading cause of house fires in the United States. The National Fire Protection Association reports that two out of every three structure fires (43%) start in the kitchen. In this article we will look at some steps to reduce these risks. *Keep appliances serviced, clean, and in good repair. Dump the crumb tray and clean out the toaster crumbs periodically. Keep the oven cleaned. Wipe out the microwave. *Unplug electric appliances when not in use. Toaster ovens, mixers,
and so on, continue to draw electricity even when they are not turned on. If the wiring is old or faulty, or if the thermostat overheats, a fire could break out. *Install a smoke detector near, not in the kitchen. You don’t want the small amount of smoke or steam generated by cooking to constantly set of the alarm, but you do want it close enough to sense an actual kitchen fire. *Use caution when lighting the pilot light burner on a gas stove. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions. *Do not use metal in the microwave. The sparks can turn into a fire or seriously damage your microwave.

in this bathroom for privacy and to keep late afternoon sun and heat from turning the bathroom into a sauna. We put these Silhouettes on a motorized
remote control rather than having to lean over the bathtub to access the cord. The Luminette is the same basic principle as a Silhouette, but it hangs vertically. Look at the picture of the living room. This Luminette hides a patio door that not only faces south but is also very close to a public walkway. We needed something for sun and heat protection, with privacy control, but which also let light into this small room and allowed easy access to the patio door. The Luminette satisfied all of that criteria, and it looks good too! SHUTTERS While shutters weren’t specifically designed as a sun/heat control product, they certainly work well in this area. White shutters especially deflect light and heat or cold when closed. They also have the added feature of partial privacy, partial view when the bottom half is closed and the top half is open. Shutters are a classic look that work well in many design styles

and have the distinction of being the only window treatment that will hold its value for resale. My personal living room has a picture window that takes up almost an entire wall. I was amazed at how much the newly installed shutters changed the temperature in the room. I could finally be comfortable sitting on my couch directly in front of the window. Shutters work well all alone, without adding a valence, cornice or drapes. This creates a very clean, classic look to any room. So now you have my favorite products for sun, heat and privacy problems. Equally as important as using a quality product, is purchasing your products from a quality company with professional installers. Nothing works well if it isn’t installed properly or isn’t the correct product for your space. If you are in the market for window treatments give Marcia Moore Design a call and we’ll dress your windows to perfection!

NEW MEXICAN RESTAURANT EASY WINTER DRINK RECIPES DEBUTS IN BEVO MILL DISTRICT TO WARM YOUR SOUL by Debbie Wheeler
In 1991, and on his own at 16, Luis Garduno came to the United States; propelled by a deep desire to make enough money to buy his mother her own home in Janitzio, Mexico where he and his brothers were raised. Driven too, with the boyish dreams of things like television sets, stereos and all the things a boy that age would enjoy, Luis landed a job in Cincinnati working for a Chinese restaurant as a bus boy and dishwasher. He worked hard, and under the watchful eye and mentoring of a wonderful, motherly Chinese woman that took him under her wing, Luis was soon cooking as the head Chinese cuisine chef at the ripe old age of 18. After 3 years in Cincinnati, he made the move to St. Louis where he continued his career as a chef, and eventually opened his own very successful Mexican Food restaurant in the heart of the Cherokee District in South St. Louis. Now, Luis and his partner and wife, Rosa, are the proud new business owners of Mi Lindo Michoacan Mexican restaurant located at 4534 Gravois Avenue, in the Bevo Mill district of South St. Louis. They are focused on doing their part to make the area a place for the
people of St. Louis to come and enjoy the rich tastes, and styles of this diverse and eclectic neighborhood. Delicious cuisine, which he says is “1000 percent Mexican”, is prepared by Luis and his brother in the kitchen while Rosa and the wait staff greet customers with a warm welcome, serving all the chips and homemade salsa you can eat while you wait for your order. Their signature dish is “Molajete (mō lă hě tě)” which is a combination of steak, chicken, mexican sausage, nopales (cactus), and jalapenos; served with homemade tortillas, rice and beans. Luis says his seafood dishes, made with a flare of Mexico, are a must try as well! Mi Lindo Michoacan is open 7 days a week from 10 am to 10 pm. They are still waiting on their liquor license which should be issued in the next few weeks, and coming soon on Friday nights will be Karaoke. So, come on out for the best Mexican food this side of Janitzio!

*Don’t overfill pots or pans with oil or grease. The hot oil or grease can splatter or overspill causing a fire. *Wipe up spills and don’t cook on a dirty stove. Grease built up is flammable, a clean stove is a fire-free stove. *Always roll up long sleeves and tie back long hair when cooking. You might have left the burner on by accident, and heat build-up could ignite combustibles left near or on the stove. *Never store unused pots and pans in the oven. You may forget them when you turn the oven on to preheat. *Turn pot handles inward toward the back of the stove. This helps to prevent children from reaching up and pulling a hot pan onto themselves.
We all learned in elementary school that fire needs oxygen to burn. You can smother a grease fire if it is still very small, by sliding a lid onto the fire. So the next time you begin your cooking preparations always get a lid out for each pot or pan, and place it nearby. ● If a fire starts in a pan, don’t panic! ● Use a pot holder to slide the lid over the container with the fire. ● Turn the burner off. ● Let it cool completely before taking off
the lid, at least 20 minutes. ● If you do not feel comfortable fighting the fire, or it is too big to fight, leave immediately. Call 911 from a neighbor’s house. Most importantly, NEVER throw water onto a grease fire. I hope these few helpful hints keep all your kitchen memories a pleasant one!

It is hard to believe, but baseball season will be gearing up for the New Year! Our St. Louis Cardinals had a fun and exciting 2015 with playing in the playouffs and race for the World Series! Spring Training begins in March in beautiful Jupiter, Florida. It is an experience for any true baseball fan
of any age! The St. Louis Cardinals play at Roger Dean Stadium, named after Roger H. Dean, proprietor of Roger Dean Automobiles – one of the first Mega Dealerships in Florida. The business has held the naming rights to the stadium since opening in 1998. Roger Dean Stadium is simply my favorite Spring Training facility in the country. Not just because I am a Cardinal fan, more so because of location, seating, and size! The stadium only holds 6,871 people, which makes every seat in the park a “home run”. The intimate feel of this stadium surrounds you and team players are almost within reach! It is as if you are sitting at a high school/college sports event with the big leagues. The Roger Dean
By Tod DeHart Stadium Complex is the only stadium in the country to host four minor league teams and host two major league teams – that being our Cardinals and the Miami Marlins. Not to worry though, Cardinal red takes over this venue by far and St. Louisans can be proud to call Jupiter the winter home of “Cardinal Nation”! Right before the stadium debut in 1998, I was privileged to take a tour of the construction site that would soon grace baseball fans from all over. I remember taking a bus out to a large sandy parcel of land with just a few trees here and there. I thought to myself, “what in the world are they thinking building this in no mans land”. But, this was truly a stadium being built with the mantra “if you build it… they will come” –
and boy have they! Today, the stadium is surrounded with lush foliage and landscaping, parking facilities, restaurants, shops and a newly built hotel immediately across the drive from the stadium. In addition, Florida’s Atlantic University would grace the property next door within a few years after the stadium was completed. The new Alcoa neighborhood would rise with residential homes, apartments and condos making the stadium district active year-round. Each year, for the last 15 years, DIRECTIONS Tours has enjoyed taking people to Jupiter to experience the Cardinals in training. Many people take the...

Travel Healthy and Happy by Tod DeHart
Travel is fun and exciting, but it is also a a great way to enhance your life in many ways! Travel is proven to be one of the best ways to make your life healthier, happier, stronger and more fullfilled. Actual studies have proven that travel increases well-being, learning experiences, decreased stress levels, and creates memories of a lifetime. In addition, traveling builds stronger relationships, new friendships and connects people to new ideas and cultures. Vacation and relaxation go hand in hand. When leaving home (or work) and adventuring away from “the norm”, we leave our day to day lives and responsibilities far behind. This allows our bodies to reset our biological body clock. Notably, studies have shown decreased stress levels in people who travel. Reducing the amount of stress over just one week away on a trip, travelers registered lower levels of stress hormones in their saliva. Limiting our stress, our bodies no longer synchronize with the clock, but instead, with the sunrise and sunset. It is common knowledge that travel brings people together and builds new and everlasting relationships. Whether you travel alone, with family, or with friends, a vacation get away improves and creates relationships and friendships. In my 20 years of professionaltravel experience, I have taken joy and pleasure in seeing so
many new relationships form and grow while adventuring out. One of my greatest joys is introducing single travelers to new people, which ultimately become lifelong friendships. Because of this, I decided to create a more affordable pricing package for single travelers with DIRECTIONS Tours. When traveling as a single, one must pay more money in most cases (due to not spliting hotel costs). This leads to higher single supplemental costs and deters many people from traveling alone. So... I went to work with our vendors and negotiated better rates for our single guests. Now, when traveling with DIRECTIONS Tours, single guests can enjoy our great trips at the same rates of doubles or just a little more. (see details below). Many single travelers are also leary about traveling alone. Rest assured, you are never “alone” when you are our guests! There are so many great places to explore this holiday season and in 2016. DIRECTIONS Tours of St. Louis is a great place to start your vacation planning! Check out our Special Autumn Travel Pages in this issue of Active Lifestyles Magazine! Exciting destinations and adventures just waiting for you! For More information on our Single Supplements see inside pages of this Explore Section.

DURABLE POWERS OF ATTORNEY AND LIVING WILLS by Mark Easley, Attorney at Law
One of my main goals while working with clients on the issue of estate planning, is to ensure that all of the family’s estate matters remain private and cost efficient. Too often, individuals wait until it is too late to address these issues. If these matters aren’t handled before incapacity, the family will be required to set up an expensive and time-consuming court-supervised guardianship. Thankfully, a few simple documents can help you to avoid these difficulties. Durable Power of Attorney Through a Durable Power of Attorney, you name a trusted individual (your “Agent” or “AttorneyIn-Fact”) and give them the power and authority to act on your behalf in legal and financial matters. The Durable Power of Attorney may be immediately effective or may be invoked upon your incapacity to handle any funds that may be needed for your care. Granting such a power over one’s assets to another can make some people nervous. However, your Durable Power of Attorney may be drafted so that your Agent can act on your behalf ONLY in the event of your incapacity; otherwise, you and you alone would have access to your assets.
Living Wills Unfortunately, a situation may arise in which you are unconscious, perhaps due to a serious accident, and it is determined that you will not regain consciousness, or that you cannot survive without artificial means. A Living Will can be used to address such situations. Under a Living Will, you can direct your physicians to terminate the use of any artificial means to prolong your life if there is no possibility of recovery. By executing a Living Will, you can keep your loved ones from having to make such a difficult decision; additionally, the Living Will can save thousands of dollars that could be incurred in prolonged, unnecessary medical care.
B
usiness
Healthcare Power of Attorney Similarly, a Healthcare Power of Attorney allows another trusted individual to make certain medical decisions, gain access to medical records and make provisions for your care during any period of disability. By executing a Healthcare Power of Attorney, you can ensure that your care will be administered efficiently and effectively in the event of incapacity due to accident or illness; any necessary decisions regarding your care can be made immediately without the need for a court-supervised guardianship.
Conclusion Fortunately, establishing powers of attorney and living wills can be simple and inexpensive. In fact, many hospitals have Healthcare Power of Attorney and Living Will forms available to their patients to sign. However, the Durable Power of Attorney should be prepared by an attorney to make sure that the laws of your state of residence are taken into consideration. All families should take the time to make sure that these documents are all in place and up to date. Our firm recommends that you have several successor agents on the Durable Power of Attorney and the Healthcare Power of Attorney so that
if one agent becomes disabled or dies, you will have another agent ready to step forward to act for you.

WHAT’S LEFT TO MY HEIRS - REVERSE MORTAGES by Kevin Kohler, Sr., Reverse Specialist
Understandably, one of the most important questions someone asks when contemplating taking out a Reverse Mortgage is what will be left to my family and heirs. It is a common core thought and feeling among many Americans that they want to pass on their accumulated
wealth and assets to their family, including their home or equity from their home. It is sometimes met with a feeling of selfishness that to take out a Reverse Mortgage means that a significant financial asset will no longer be able to pass along. There is some truth to this, but not always to the extent that most people think. First, taking out a Reverse Mortgage is similar to any other type of mortgage. It creates a lien against the property, and one that eventually does get paid off after one of two things happen: 1) when you permanently move out of the property, or 2) when the last surviving household member passes or moves out. Until that time, no payments are ever required. Taxes and insurance must always be paid. Just like other mortgages, interest accrues per the interest rate, but instead of making
monthly payments, that interest is put onto the principal balance. Therefore, the balance will increase over the years. However, let’s look at how an initial set up of a Reverse Mortgage works. With the FHA insured Home Equity Conversion Mortgage (HECM), the traditional Reverse Mortgage, FHA will use a formula based on current age and life expectancy, as to how much equity they will allow to be provided in the mortgage. Typically, this will range between 35-40% for someone close to the minimum age of 62 (or if a nonborrowing spouse is below 62) and about 70% for someone in their late 80’s. The nature of this formula is to allow enough remaining equity to cover the interest accrual until the life expectancy is reached. Simply put, if someone outlives the life expectancy by a significant amount, FHA is on the hook for covering the loss for what the home could cover through it being sold. But that’s just it. Just like interest will accrue, so, too, does the appreciation in value of the home. And when the time comes of passing, or of moving permanently out of the home, the home can be sold through the estate or an heir can pay off any existing
balance of the Reverse Mortgage. Any equity that remains is still there to give. However, if the balance of the Reverse Mortgage would happen to exceed what the value of home would be, then the heirs have the option to give the home over to the lender and FHA will incur any loss through FHA’s insurance. To show an example, let’s use the following scenario. The senior’s age is 65 with a home that is worth $250,000 currently, and the Reverse Mortgage is taken out for $100,000, with an interest rate at 5.0%. If they would pass at 80 years old, and assuming the home appreciates in value at 2% per year, then in 15 years, the mortgage balance would be $207,892 and the home value would be $336,467. At that time, the decision could be made by the heirs, if they wish to pay off the mortgage balance and retain the home, or they could sell the home and still realize a significant amount of equity.

PUT YOUR FINANCIAL “PUZZLE” TOGETHER by Jeff Ponte, Edward Jones Advisor
January 29 is National Puzzle Day, with puzzle celebrations and events taking place at museums, libraries and other venues across the country. Why this date was chosen – or why National Puzzle Day even exists – is something of a mystery. But as an investor, you can find value in the concept of a puzzle – specifically, in putting together the pieces of your financial puzzle. What are these pieces? Here are the essential ones: •Growth – At different times in your life, you will have various goals – purchasing a first or second home, sending your children to college, enjoying a comfortable retirement, and so on. While these goals are diverse, they all have one thing in common: To achieve them, you’ll need some growth potential in your investment portfolio. The nature and the extent of the growthoriented vehicles, such as stocks and stock-based instruments, in your holdings will depend on your specific
Roth IRA contributions are not taxdeductible, but your earnings grow tax free, provided you’ve had your account at least five years and you don’t start taking withdrawals until you reach 59½.) •Protection – You can’t just invest for your future – you also have to protect it. If something were to happen to you, would your family be able to remain in your home? Would your children still be able to go to college? To help ensure continuity and security in your family’s lives, you’ll need to maintain adequate life and disability insurance. Also, you will need to protect your independence in your retirement years, as you no doubt would want to avoid burdening your grown children with any financial burden. To attain this type of freedom, you may have to guard against the potentially catastrophic costs of long-term care, such as an extended nursing home stay. A financial professional can suggest ways of meeting these expenses. •Legacy – After working hard
goals, risk tolerance and time horizon – but growth opportunities you must have. •Income – Income-producing investments, such as bonds and dividend-paying stocks, can help supplement your earned income during your working years and provide you with a valuable income stream when you’re retired. Plus, bonds and other income-producers can help balance a portfolio that might otherwise be too heavy in growth vehicles – which, as you know, are typically higher in risk. •Taxes – Taxes will always be part of the investment equation. Whenever possible, you’ll want to take advantage of those accounts that let you make tax-deductible contributions and that provide the opportunity for taxdeferred growth, such as a traditional IRA and your 401(k) or other employersponsored retirement plan. You may also find that you can benefit from taxfree investments, such as some types of municipal bonds and a Roth IRA. (Your

NEW BOOK HIGHLIGHTS HISTORY BEHIND DOWNTOWN ST. LOUIS
A
rts & entertainment
A new book has just been released highlighting beautiful Downtown St. Louis. With rich photographic history, Author NiNi Harris follows the evolution of Downtown St. Louis from colonial days when French traders and craftsmen planted maize on the prairies that stretched from Fourth Street west to Jefferson Avenue, to millennials and empty nesters living in castle-like warehouses converted into twenty firstcentury lofts. Downtown St. Louis recalls when Native Americans arrived by canoe to attend a grand council and when the sounds of Italian street vendors filled the air in the 1870s. It describes the street celebration that erupted at Eighth and Olive Streets at the news that the Japanese had surrendered, ending World War II. All the while, generations of St. Louisans were building and rebuilding a spectacular downtown with ornate Victorian architecture reflected in the sheer glass walls of International Style skyscrapers, lavish art deco civic buildings, and a train station modeled after a walled medieval city. Filled with myriad images—historical and contemporary—this book chronicles the building of the old riverfront, the Wainwright Building, Busch Stadium II, and the Gateway Arch, among other major moments.
Downtown St. Louis (Reedy Press) is available locally wherever books are sold, as well as online at amazon.com and reedypress.com
Author NiNi Harris, a lifelong St. Louisan, has researched and written about St. Louis’s architecture, ethnic heritage, neighborhood history, and the Civil War in St. Louis. For thirty years she has been giving tours of downtown St. Louis that explore the frontier history of St. Louis, the evolution of the skyscraper as represented in the architecture of downtown, and downtown’s dramatic art deco buildings. She used to lead her tours down the center of Washington Avenue to look up at the impressive cornices that top the warehouses. Harris is delighted that today the activity and traffic on Washington Avenue have forced her tour groups onto the sidewalks. Downtown St. Louis is her thirteenth book about St. Louis.
Downtown St. Louis, by NiNi Harris; foreword by Charlie Brennan, photo edited by Don Korte, ISBN: 9781681060156; hardcover 8.5 x 11, 160 pages; $35.00

All adoptable dogs are fully vetted being spayed/neutered, vaccinated, micro-chipped and heart worm tested. Needy Paws Rescue has at least 50 adoptable dogs every week. Coppers
My name is Coppers. I am a very happy 2 year old Miniature Pinscher with a lot of energy for playing, but I would prefer to play with older kids. When I want to slow down, I love to snuggle with my family. Loud noises scare me, but I try to be strong. I am proud to say I am house and crate trained and I don’t mind car rides.
My name is Garcia and I’m a Shepherd Mix. Even though I’m a 1 year old with plenty of puppy energy, I still love to cuddle with you and be by your side. I like walking on a leash and car rides are the best. I don’t mind being around other dogs and I always have time to play with kids. I’m still learning house and crate training, but I am pretty smart so it shouldn’t take me too much longer!
Remy
Hercules
Hi there, my name is Remy. I am a sweet, playful 3 year old Boxer Mix and always like to play fetch. My foster mom says I’m really smart and a fast learner. I know sit, lay down, and high five. I am house broken and crate trained too. I’m still working on learning “calm” because my foster mom wants me to slow down my “zoomies” around the house. As great as I am, I really don’t like cats.

I’m Hercules, a handsome 70 pound, 3 1/2 year old baby. Even though they say I’m a Pit Bull Terrier mix, my foster mom says I remind her more of a Boxer/ Chocolate Lab mix, but either way I’m sweet as pie. I love going for walks, belly rubs, peanut butter filled Kongs and snuggling on the couch. I don’t mind older kids at all (above 10), I am house and crate trained and very well behaved. I do want to be your only family dog and I will give you all the love you need!
Peanut Butter & Apple Sauce Cookies for Dogs
Preheat oven to 350 degrees and cover 2 baking sheets with parchment paper. In a mixing bowl, combine all ingredients well. Knead dough on a lightly floured surface. If the dough is too loose and crumbly, you can add a teaspoon of olive oil at this point. Use a rolling pin to roll the dough to about 1/4 inch thick and then cut into shapes with cookie cutters. If you don’t want to use cookie cutters, simply make small dough balls. Place cookies on baking sheet, approximately 1/2 inch apart. Bake in preheated over for approximately 25 minutes or until lightly browned. Let cool and then serve.
