St. Louis Architecture & Fashion Ultimate Repurposing and Recycling
by Debbie Wheeler, Editor
be a city of great architecture and fashion has not waned for St. Louis. Many of the beautiful buildings on Washington Avenue that once housed the great fashion industry in the 1900’s have been beautifully restored to their grand luster and re-purposed as gorgeous lofts. St. Louis still walks the vogue catwalk; supporting and elevating the local fashion community and providing opportunities for both local and national designers to connect with its Midwest audience. For several fashion conscious St. Louisans as well as thousands of fashionistas across the United States, the 21st century also brought with it a desire for style that is mindful, economically and environmentally. This awareness has led to a booming new resale industry which encompasses fashion and other consumer goods. Resale, or retail, who can tell the difference? Several retail shops go out of business daily, but resale shops are thriving and attracting consumers from all economic levels. Pretty much EVERYONE tends to get excited when finding a treasure and saving money to boot! Savvy buyers seize the opportunity resale shops offer to save money on clothing, furniture and other goods. The money these shoppers save can add

VILLAGE AGLOW 2.0
St. Louis is gaining recognition as a great place for start-ups. While many of these new enterprises are technology driven, one homegrown start-up focuses on making lives better through personal connections. STL Village is a nonprofit membership organization that offers an innovative approach to providing adults age 50+ the services they need to remain living in their homes and opportunities to stay socially active and engaged in the community. Members have access to trained volunteers and vetted providers for a variety of in-home services and a wide range of social activities each month. STL Village also views older adults as a vital resource for the St. Louis community, and members regularly volunteer on initiatives that are leading the way in making St. Louis a vibrant city today and into the future. STL Village currently serves residents in over 11 neighborhoods in St. Louis city and adjoining communities, and its members range in age from 50 to 95. It is affiliated with the Village to Village Network headquartered in St. Louis which supports aging-incommunity organizations throughout the country and internationally.

Meet our mother/daughter cover models, St. Louisan’s Liz (right) and Gail (left) Watkins. These regal beauties, elegantly dressed in upscale resale clothes provided by Rung Boutique, are the crown jewels adorning the exterior of the Jewel Box in Forest Park on this month’s issue of Active Lifestyles. Rung Boutique, located at 9741 Manchester Rd, is one of many highend, resale boutiques serving the greater Saint Louis area. A non-profit resale shop, Rung’s mission is to support and empower women and children in the St. Louis area by providing fashionable attire at affordable prices. Special thanks to Rung‘s photo stylist, Carmen Boeser, who came up with such great ensembles for Liz and Gail and made the fitting session so much fun! Louis dedicated the rarest Jewel Box of all time to Forest Park, as crowds flocked to experience its magnificent Art Deco design. With its unconventional, cantilevered, vertical glass walls rising majestically 50 feet high, supported by arched steel beams, the Jewel Box opened in 1936 to national acclaim. The Post-Dispatch called the Art Deco-style structure, “the latest word in display greenhouses.” Today it is an aged St. Louis treasure that has been restored to its former glory. Just as the Jewel Box highlights a treasure trove of Mother Nature’s astounding beauty and its geometric architecture of a bygone era, our great city also spotlighted other types of looks and designs of the times. St. Louis entered the 20th century known not just for her beautiful architectural works, but for what was inside. Within the walls of those amazing building designs a booming Fashion Industry was emerging. One only had to stand outside St. Louis’ garment district on Washington Avenue during the 1920’s to hear the buzz of sewing machines seaming together thousands of garments that rivaled other great cities. During the early to mid-1900’s St. Louis had one of the largest needletrade centers in the country—second, according to some, only to New York! In the 21st century, the desire to

According to Jewelry Box Avenue, a premier online retailer, some of the rarest jewelry boxes in history are Art Metal boxes. In the early 1900’s art nouveau was introduced in France and the metal jewelry box craze was born. These metal jewelry boxes were mass produced, and thanks to mail order catalogues like Sears and Roebuck, Montgomery Ward and Marshall Fields, the boxes were made available to women in the United States. It was through the mail order world that American ladies of the early 1900’s could aspire to the elegant styles of the world’s great cities like London, Paris, and New York. By the 1920’s, art nouveau, a style of art, design, and architecture that uses curving lines and shapes that look like leaves and flowers, gave way to the art deco era which is characterized by precise and boldly delineated geometric shapes and strong colors. Both art nouveau and art deco were influenced by industrial elements, only art deco took it one step further, incorporating the use of stainless steel, glass, metal and plastics in design. In essence, in the 1920’s and 1930’s these materials and designs were meant to signify all that was modern. Where art nouveau was the beginning of the use of modern elements in design, art deco was its peak. On November 14, 1936, St.

AGING IN PLACE - SAFE AND COMFORTABLE FOR YOU by Mary Jane Kuhn
When you are young and starting out in life you might move around a bit. Jobs change, life happens and you may live in several cities or homes, but at some point in almost everyone’s life, you settle down. Maybe you’ve been in your home for 10 years,
20 years or 40 years. Maybe the home you’re living in now is where you taught your daughter to ride her bike or where everyone gathers for Thanksgiving each year. Maybe it’s where you can sit on the porch and memories of popsicles and skinned knees and the joy of raising your children come flooding back to make you smile. Maybe it’s the place you want to live for as long as you possibly can. As Aging in Place Specialists we work hard to make your home safe and comfortable for you. We can make simple changes in your home, especially your bathroom and kitchen, that will allow you to stay in your home a long time. Sometimes, however, no matter how much we want you to be able to stay in the home where you raised your family, it’s just not possible. One of the biggest reasons people have to move from their beloved homes later in life is because they don’t have a bedroom on the first floor and stairs become too difficult. It’s not always cost effective to do an addition and so moving might be
the best option. If you are in the position where you have to move but aren’t ready to consider a retirement community or nursing home, ask an Aging In Place Specialist to help you house hunt. When you find a home you like, have them come walk through it with you to talk through any improvements that might need to be made to make it as safe and comfortable for you as possible. Important things to look for if you are searching for a new home would be a first floor bedroom or master bedroom, a first floor bathroom, separate or zoned heating and cooling if you do have multiple floors to help save money (so you can turn the upstairs off when you’re not using it), an entrance that could easily support a ramp should a wheelchair ever be necessary and a lawn that is easily maintained. Please call us anytime if you have questions about Aging in Place in your own home or if you are house hunting. Our estimates are free of charge and we are passionate about
helping our clients live where they want to as long as possible. Kuhn Construction Co., Inc. 755 E. Monroe Ave. Oakland, MO 63122 (314) 966-5846 www.kuhnconst.com kuhnconstruction@sbcglobal.net

A STAIR LIFT CAN HELP YOU STAY IN THE HOME YOU LOVE by Jim Campbell
the technician will be able to look at the configuration of your stairs and ask you questions about your needs. They will then be able to recommend the best lift for your particular situation. When looking at pricing for a lift, make sure you account for the total cost of the lift. Prices on the internet often do not include the cost of shipping or the cost of installation. If you need the lift installed, look for a local company that specializes in stair lifts with trained technicians, rather than someone that is using subcontractors or handymen to do installations on the side. This will insure that the lift is installed properly for safe operation. Stair lifts are very dependable pieces of equipment. However, they are mechanical devices and can break down from time to time. This is another reason to pick a local company for your stair lift. A local company will likely provide a warranty on parts and labor for your lift. Should you need service they will be
able to send out a trained technician with parts on their truck to get your lift up and running again. There may come a time when you will have to move out of your home and sell it. Most realtors ask that a stair lift be removed before placing a home on the market. Some local companies such as us here at Options HME will make an offer to purchase the lift back when it is no longer needed. This is something to take into account when considering the total cost of a stair lift. Options HME, Inc. is going into its 10th year of selling and installing stair lifts in St. Louis and the surrounding communities. Give us a call or drop us an e-mail to schedule a free estimate for a stair lift. For additional information contact: Jim Campbell Options HME, Inc. Most people want to stay in their own home as long as possible. However, stairs can become an obstacle to accessing all levels of a home as we age. A stair lift can allow you to stay in your home longer. A stair lift can prevent falls on stairs. Along with transporting people, they are often used to help transport laundry or groceries from one level to another. A stair lift typically comes with two remote controls. This is so one person in the home can ride the lift from one level to another and then send it back for another person to ride. When looking for a stair lift there are some important questions that need to be answered. Will it fit in my home? What is the total cost? Who will install it? How will I get it repaired should there be trouble with it? And what do I do with it when I no longer need it? The best way to make sure that a lift will fit in your stair case is to have a trained technician visit your home to do an evaluation. By visiting your home,

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT MEDICARE AND TURNING 65 by Dale Poss, Senior Specialist - Licensed Agent When should I sign up for Medicare Part A & Part B? • If you’re already getting benefits from Social Security or the Railroad Retirement Board (RRB), you’ll automatically get Part A & B starting the first day of the month you turn 65. (If your birthday is on the first day of the month, Part A & B will start the first day of the prior month,) • If you’re under 65 and disabled, you’ll automatically get Part A & B after you get disability benefits from Social Security or certain disability benefits from the RRB for 24 months.
What is Medicare? What are my options? What are the differences in... Medicare Advantage, Medicare Supplements, Medicare Part D plans? When does enrollment period begin and end?
People are now working Full time past age 65 and should they get Part B? • Employer or Union coverage-If you or your spouse (or family member if you’re disabled) IS STILL WORKING and you have health coverage through that Employer or Union, contact your employer or union benefits administrator to find out how your coverage works with Medicare. This includes federal or state employment, and active-duty military service. It might be to your advantage to delay Part B enrollment. You can sign up for Part B
without paying a penalty any time you have health coverage based on your or your spouse’s CURRENT employment (or a family member’s current employment if you’re disabled). Note: Coverage based on employment doesn’t include:
current
• COBRA • Retiree coverage • VA coverage • Individual health coverage (like through the Health Insurance Marketplace) No longer working full time.
Initial Enrollment Period: • You can first sign up for Part A and/or Part B during the 7-month period that begins 3 months before the month you turn 65, includes the month you turn 65, and ends 3 months after the month you turn 65. Without exception, everyone needs help to navigate through this maze.

• If you will not be receiving Social Security benefits at Age 65 and do not have creditable coverage through your or spouse’s current employer or union, that is if both of you are not working. Then its up to you to enroll into Medicare. In most cases, if you don’t sign up for Part B when you’re first eligible, you may have to pay a late enrollment penalty for as long as you have Part B.

FALL HOME SAFETY
HOUSEHOLD SAFETY TIPS CHANGE WITH THE SEASON by Karen Siebert
As days get shorter and nights get longer, our habits begin to change. Arriving along with the season of autumn is a host of safety hazards we didn’t have to think about over the summer, creating the need for a little extra vigilance. As the temperatures drop and you settle in for the approaching cold spell, consider the following pointers for ensuring you and your family stay not just warm, but also safe!
Warm Up Carefully All types of heating units can be dangerous. If you use a wood-burning fireplace, secure it with a screen to prevent sparks, and make sure the fire is completely out before you retire for the night. If you depend on your home’s furnace, make sure it has been inspected before you start to use it again. And, if you resort to space heaters, make sure they are in good working order (no frayed cords) and out of the reach of children. Enjoy ambiance safely If you use candles to add a warm glow to a cold night, make sure they are safely out of reach of children, can’t be overturned by pets, and are not close to flammable items such as blankets, paper
or other furniture. If you’re known for falling asleep before heading to bed, extinguish all candles early in the night to avoid an unsafe, all-night burning situation. Exercise yard safety If you’re going to be pruning trees and shrubs, hanging Halloween decorations, raking leaves, or engaging in other yard activities, use caution: be careful on ladders, avoid power lines, and put away yard tools when you’re finished. Be grounded Make sure you make weatherfriendly shoes and boots handy for the whole family. This is the season for slippery driveways and walkways. Without proper footwear, you can find yourself on your back or in the hospital.

California Pacific SurfLiner
After the holiday hustle and bustle, you may be thinking about getting away as the New Year sets in! Warm breezes and fantastic sights await you in Southern California this January 2017! Southern California consists of the lower half of the state, primarily from Los Angeles to the Mexico (California Baja) border. As winter continues across most of the country, this part of California is ideal for a break from the cold weather, with daytime temperatures in the 70’s. DIRECTIONS Tours is offering this exclusive winter getaway vacation tour. After our nonstop Southwest Airlines flight from St. Louis to Los Angeles, we will transfer to our deluxe accommodations in San Clamente for the next two nights. We will enjoy the pristine Pacific beaches, historic pier and village while here.
Next, this exciting tour package includes The Pacific Surfliner Train from San Clamente to San Diego. This four hour excursion hugs the Pacific coast as you admire the ocean views. The Pacific Surfliner route offers a unique vantage on the Southern California seascape. As they say... to get a closer look, you’d have to be on a surfboard! Once we arrive in beautiful San Diego, we will transfer to our deluxe accommodations for the next three nights! Our hotel is directly on the San Diego Bay and Marina overlooking the San Diego skyline and harbor. The next few days we will enjoy San Diego’s diverse attractions, from beautiful Pacific coast beaches to historic sights. A locally guided city tour will feature many of San Diego’s best architecture, history and current day information. A trip to San Diego would not be complete without time to visit the famous Hotel del Coronado. A beautiful historic hotel, it was originally built in 1885. This wooden Victorian beach resort is located immediately behind the beach, facing the Pacific Ocean. It remains the largest beach resort on the North American Pacific Coast. Another day will include free-time to relax, enjoy the hotel pools and marina or how about taking a whale /dolphin watching excursion or spending the day at the San Diego Zoo! Before departing beautiful San Diego, we will also enjoy a harbor boat cruise and the Seaport Village.
By Tod DeHart
Our tour will then travel through South Cal’s beautiful farmlands. California’s agriculture is the most productive and varied in the U.S.; owing to the climate, topography, complex systems of water delivery, and diverse population of growers. Coastal temperatures are fairly consistent, and can support year-round production of many row crops. Two of South California’s major crops include fruits and nuts. A visit to Bates Nut Farm will highlight this agricultural valley. The tour will then follow the Pacific coast northward to Oceanside, California - “America’s Surf City”. Enjoy a tour of town, the beach and pier. Another stop will be at the Mission San Luis Rey De Francia. Founded in 1798 by Padre Fermin Francisco de Lasuen, the Mission was named after St. Louis IX, King of France, who lived during the 13th century. Our last evening will be near the Anaheim area prior to our morning nonstop Southwest Airlines flight back to St. Louis. Don’t miss out on this incredible winter getaway to Southern Califonia with us! For more details on this tour vacation - see inside this Explore Edition or give us a call.

Proposition S: Meeting the Needs of Seniors of Greater St. Louis There are serious gaps in funding and delivery of services for seniors. A collection of trusted organizations and community members have come together through Seniors Count to make an impact through the introduction of Proposition S. In November, you’ll have the opportunity to make a significant difference in the lives of residents 60+ in your county who are facing gaps in numerous areas including: • • • • •
Transportation Nutrition Home maintenance/safety Care coordination Medicare/Medicaid
• • • • •
Behavioral health Dental health Socialization Homemaker services Respite services

Active Lifestyles Magazine supports PROPOSITION S on the November ballot in St. Charles County, St. Louis County, and St. Louis City to establish a Senior Citizen’s Service Fund. How will it work? Proposition S will raise property taxes by $9.50 for every $100,000 of a home’s assessed value (i.e. a $200,000 home will see an increase of only $19 in property tax annually). The revenue raised will be deposited into a dedicated Senior Citizen’s Service Fund, allocated by an independent board to agencies (both for profit and non-profit eligible) for providing services for senior citizens in their homes. If approved by voters in November, this initiative will improve the ability of our metro region’s three largest counties to better address needs of seniors. For more information or to get involved with the initiative, visit SeniorsCountSTL.com or CALL: Seniors Count at 314-513-9938
CHRONIC ACHES AND PAINS: THE PATHWAY TO RELIEF by Sean M. Cristea
The majority of the community members that visit our facility for help complain about chronic aches and pains. Research from the journal Rheumatology suggests that musculoskeletal pain is more common now than is was 40 years ago. Specifically, low back pain has been reported as the second most common form of musculoskeletal degeneration in adult populations, affecting nearly 80% of all adults. If you are one that suffers from aches and pains, there is a 4 step system we teach our members to help alleviate or eliminate the issue. THE 4 STEP PROCESS TO RELIEF
2. LENGTHEN: Lengthening techniques are used to increase the length and range of motion of tissue in the body. Stretching a muscle after you inhibit it is the most effective way in creating a lengthening effect. It is important, however to seek out a qualified professional to help understand which muscles are best to inhibit and lengthen. 3. ACTIVATE: All muscles work together in a pair-like-fashion. When we have an overactive, or tight, muscle we will also create an underactive, or loose, muscle. Because of this duo relationship we must focus on both the overactive and underactive muscles when trying to reduce aches and pains. Activation techniques are designed to reeducate or increase activation of the underactive muscles. This can be accomplished through focused resistance training.
H
ealthy and Active
1. INHIBIT: The first step in our system is to release the tension of overactive tissue in the body. Our brain sends signals to muscles we tend to overuse throughout the day. We must “turn them off” so that we can better lengthen them through stretching. This can be accomplished by utilizing a foam roller, trigger point techniques, or by
seeking a qualified massage therapist to get the job done.
4. INTEGRATE: Muscle pairs of the body function together as families to create movement and posture. We must reteach the body how to use these muscle families to create proper, functional movement and reduce the risk of the pain from returning. Sustainable movement patterns are created only through the integration with the whole body. The continual decrease in everyday activity has contributed to many postural dysfunction and chronic aches and pains. The new mindset in exercise training should address muscle imbalances and movement deficiencies to improve our functional capabilities and decrease our risk of injuries. GUARD AGAINST IDENTITY THEFT - AND PROTECT YOUR FINANCES Jeff Ponte, Edward Jones Advisor
In 2015 alone, more than 13 million Americans were victimized by identity theft, according to the U.S. Department of Justice. What can you do to guard your identity and protect yourself from potential financial losses? Here are some ideas to consider: • Review your statements. Closely review the monthly statements from your checking and other financial accounts. If you find any unfamiliar charges, contact your bank or other financial services provider immediately. • Order your credit reports. The three credit reporting agencies – TransUnion, Equifax and Experian – are each required by law to provide you one free credit report a year. Make sure your name, address and other information are correct on your credit report, and if you find old or inaccurate information, have it removed. • Place a fraud alert. If you suspect you
have become a victim of Identity theft, place a “fraud alert” on your credit reports by contacting any of the three credit reporting agencies. You can choose a short-term or long-term alert. And if you’re an active member of the military, you can request a special, one-year alert. • Feed your shredder. Shred all old bank and investment statements, applications for new credit cards and any other documents that contain personal information. • Destroy digital data. If you have a variety of financial accounts, you’re not just creating a paper trail – you’re also establishing a digital “footprint.” So, when you sell or otherwise dispose of a computer system or hard drive, you may want to take steps to destroy personal data. You might think that simply deleting it would be sufficient, but tech-savvy identity thieves can “undelete” files or recover information from a formatted drive. However, products are available that allow you to
completely wipe out data on hard drives. • Change passwords. It’s a good idea to change your Internet passwords every so often – especially those passwords that provide access to financial accounts. • Leave your Social Security card home. Snagging someone’s Social Security number is a real “catch” for identity thieves, so do everything you can to thwart them. And you can start by leaving your Social Security card safely at home – after all, there’s probably never a good reason to bring it out, anyway. In fact, be wary of anyone, or any business, that asks for your Social Security number, either in person or online. Except for a few obvious exceptions, such as your tax preparer, most reputable businesses don’t need to know anything about your Social Security information. • Watch for “phishers.” If you’ve ever gotten an e-mail, supposedly from your bank, advising you that your account will be “frozen” unless you provide personal details about your
account, it’s a good bet that someone is “phishing” for this information – and they’re using the “freezing” threat as bait. What’s particularly alarming is that these “phishers” have gotten quite good at duplicating logos and using official-sounding language. However, a legitimate bank would never threaten you this way with an e-mail, so, if you get such a message, contact the bank’s fraud department. You can go a long way toward protecting yourself against identity theft by following these suggestions — so put them to work soon. WHAT DO YOU KNOW ABOUT ALOPECIA AREATA? Scott Gardner, The Hair Whisperer
Are you suffering from hair loss? Perhaps you’re finding clumps of hair in your brush or have growing bald spots on your scalp. You may find yourself constantly drawing in your eyebrows, or maybe you can’t grow a beard no matter what you try. If this is the case for you, or someone you know, then they may be suffering from alopecia areata. Alopecia areata is an autoimmune skin disease that results in the loss of hair on the scalp and possibly elsewhere on the body. It’s not contagious and it’s not caused by stress. This disease actually occurs most
often in otherwise healthy people at any age. This news can be devastating when a person is diagnosed and can be quite emotionally overwhelming. What many don’t know is that they are not alone and that they have options to continue living a life where they still feel attractive. It is estimated that over 6.8 million people in the United States and 147 million worldwide have, had or will develop alopecia areata at some point in their lives. Alopecia areata occurs when healthy hair follicles are attacked by the body’s immune system by mistake. It usually starts with one or more small, round, smooth patches on the scalp and can progress to total scalp hair loss (alopecia totalis) or complete body hair loss (alopecia universalis). The scalp is the most commonly affected area, but any hair-bearing site can be affected alone or together with the scalp such as the beard, eyebrows or legs. Hair can grow back in or fall out again at any time, and the disease course is different for each person. Some hair production is increased with various treatments and medications but as of now there is no known cure. However, it is completely possible to still
live a life looking, and feeling, beautiful! September is actually known as National Alopecia Areata Awareness Month. Many events and fundraisers are held during the month to raise awareness about alopecia areata in various communities and to encourage donations to the National Alopecia Areata Foundation (NAAF), which focuses on research for cures and provides support for those suffering and their families. HEALTHY EATING AFTER 50 - “THE DASH PLAN”
1 tablespoon of peanut butter, or 1 cup of 1% milk all have roughly the same number of calories. But, the foods are different in many ways. Some have more nutrients than others do. For example, milk gives you more calcium than a banana, and peanut butter gives you more protein than cereal. Some foods can make you feel fuller than others.
One eating plan in the Dietary Guidelines is the DASH Eating Plan. DASH stands for Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension. Following this plan can help you lower your blood pressure. How Much Should I Eat? How much you should eat depends on how active you are. If you eat more calories than your body uses, you gain weight. What are calories? Calories are a way to count how much energy is in food. The energy you get from food helps you do the things you need to do each day. Try to choose foods that have a lot of the nutrients you need, but not many calories. Just counting calories is not enough for making smart choices. Think about this: A medium banana, 1 cup of flaked cereal, 1½ cups of cooked spinach,
How Many Calories Do People over Age 50 Need Each Day? A woman: Who is not physically active needs about 1,600 calories. Who is somewhat active needs about 1,800 calories. Who has an active lifestyle needs about 2,000-2,200 calories. A man: Who is not physically active needs about 2,000 calories. Who is somewhat active needs about 2,200-2,400 calories. Who has an active lifestyle needs about 2,400-2,800 calories. Here’s a tip: Aim for at least 150 minutes (2½ hours) of physical activity each week. Ten-minute sessions several times a day on most days are fine. How Much Is on My Plate? How does the food on your plate compare with how much you should be eating?
saint louis
softer foods that are easier to chew.
Here are some ways to see how the food on your plate measures up: 1 deck of cards = 3 ounces of meat or poultry. Half baseball = half cup of fruit, rice, or pasta. 1 baseball = 1 cup of salad greens 4 dice = 1½ ounces of cheese. Tip of your first finger = 1 teaspoon of butter or margarine. 1 ping-pong ball = 2 tablespoons of peanut butter. 1 fist = 1 cup of flaked cereal or a baked potato.
Do Older Adults Need to Drink Water? With age, you may lose some of your sense of thirst. Drink plenty of liquids like water, milk, or broth. Don’t wait until you feel thirsty. Try to add liquids throughout the day. You could try soup for a snack, or drink a glass of water before exercising or working in the yard. Don’t forget to take sips of water, milk, or juice during a meal. What about Fiber? Fiber is found in foods from plants - fruits, vegetables, beans, nuts, seeds, and whole grains. Eating more fiber might prevent stomach or intestine problems, like constipation. It might also help lower cholesterol, as well as blood sugar. It is better to get fiber from food than dietary supplements. Start adding fiber slowly. That will help avoid gas. Here are some tips for adding fiber: Eat cooked dry beans, peas, and lentils often. Leave skins on your fruit and vegetables if possible, but wash them first. Choose whole fruit over fruit juice. Eat whole grain breads and cereals. Drink plenty of liquids to help fiber move through your intestines.
Common Problems Older Adults Have with Eating Does your favorite chicken dish taste different? As you age, your sense of taste and smell may change, and foods may seem to lose flavor. Try extra spices or herbs to add flavor. Also, medicines may change how food tastes. They can also make you feel less hungry. Talk to your doctor if this is a problem. Maybe some of the foods you used to eat no longer agree with you. For example, some people become lactose intolerant. They have stomach pain, gas, or diarrhea after eating or drinking something with milk in it. Your doctor can test to see if you are lactose intolerant. Is it harder to chew your food? Maybe your dentures do not fit, or your gums are sore. If so, a dentist can help you. Until then, you might want to eat

HISTORICALLY SPEAKING... The Many Lives of Washington Avenue by NiNi Harris, Historian
ST.L UIS
IT HAPPENED IN ST. LOUIS 50 YEARS AGO…
S
TL now and then
(circa 1909 - Postcard is courtesy of a private collection)
The neighborhood energy on Washington Avenue seems to almost bubble up from the sidewalk. The new Blues Museum, housed in the old Stix, Baer & Fuller Department Store building, anchors the east end of Washington Avenue. At the western end of the district stands 2020 Washington. This eight story condominium building, built by Emerson Electric Company as a factory and once home to the Sporting News, anchors the west end of the new residential district. Giant, century-old warehouses, built to serve the booming garment industry, line Washington Avenue between these anchors. St. Louisans, many of them foreign-born, manufactured shoes, overalls, ties, dresses and hats in these buildings. There were jobbers who bought and sold fabric, lace, silks and threads. These industries and businesses grew through the Roaring Twenties, the Great Depression and World War Two. Early in the 20th century, the Walkers, who sired Presidents George Herbert Walker Bush and George Walker Bush, ran Ely & Walker dry goods company on Washington. Young playwright Thomas Lanier Williams, later known by his pen name Tennessee Williams, worked in the International Shoe warehouse (now home to the playful City Museum). During the War, Emerson Electric workers manufactured the ball turrets for the B-17 bombers that annihilated the Nazi’s war industries. Following World War Two, a new wave of immigrants, refugees from a devastated Europe, energized the street as they rebuilt their own lives with jobs in the warehouses. In 1960, the textile and apparel manufacturers employed 15,000 St. Louisans. St. Louis lead the clothing industry nation-wide in the design and manufacture of junior dresses. In addition, thirty firms manufactured misses’ dresses. Twenty-seven companies produced men’s and boys’ sportswear. Eighteen companies made ladies’ blouses. And Washington Avenue was the heart of this booming trade. Gradually, the garment industry left St. Louis, then left the United States. The massive warehouses of Washington Avenue emptied out. They
were left underutilized, or even vacant hulks. The street and sidewalks that had buzzed with activity, felt like those of a ghost town. The buildings themselves, however, were just as magnificent empty as they were when the street employed thousands. I used to give walking tours of Washington Avenue when we could stand right in the center of the street to get a good view of the ornate cornices that topped the buildings. From the middle of the street, we admired molded copper cornices, the rough cut stone, the fanciful forms of the molded terra cotta, and the ornamental brick that made these buildings works of art. We never worried about traffic. There was none. During the last 20 years, one warehouse after another has been converted into apartments or condominiums. At street level, restaurants thrive in the old buildings. Even charter schools have opened in the old buildings. As a whole, Washington Avenue has been reincarnated as an extraordinary residential neighborhood. Enjoying a late afternoon coffee at the Washington Avenue Post -- a combined deli, convenience store and copy shop -- at 1315 Washington, I witness a parade of activity. Residents walk their dogs. Employees of the bank located in the old Fashion Square building stop in the Washington Avenue Post for an expresso to get them through the rest of the day. Street residents stop in to pick up a loaf of bread or carton of milk. And regularly, there is a pick-up chess game at the tables in the deli section. These new Downtown residents walk, shop and socialize where generations of immigrants powered the St. Louis economy. © 2016 by NiNi Harris
St. Louis Hawks vs. Chicago Bulls October 15, 1966 Sports rivalry between St. Louis and Chicago runs deep when it comes to their beloved teams: Cardinals vs. Cubs and Blues vs. Blackhawks. However, how many of you remember the third rival sport between these two major cities? That’s right, it was St. Louis Hawks vs. Chicago Bulls in the NBA. The Hawks franchise began in 1955 when the team arrived in St. Louis from Milwaukee, and remained in the Gateway City until 1968 when the team flew the coop to Atlanta Ga. The Chicago Bulls franchise began their NBA career in the 1966/67 season. On October 15, 1966 the Bulls, playing their first ever NBA game, managed to out dunk the Hawks 104 to 97. This first taste of victory however did not end so sweet that season, as the Hawks finished in second place with a 39-42 record; sweeping the
expansion Chicago Bulls during the playoffs in three straight games to reach the Western Division Finals that year. The city of St. Louis has yet to see a return of NBA Basketball in the 35 years since the Hawks departed to Atlanta. They did have ABA basketball for two seasons: 1974–75 and 1975– 76, with a team known as the Spirits of St. Louis, but when the ABA merged with the NBA in 1976 the Spirits were not invited to join. The Spirits effect can still be felt however, as they chose to receive a small percentage of every television contract from the four teams that did join the NBA, and have long since surpassed the lump sum buyouts received by other ABA teams like the Kentucky Colonels and Virginia Squires. St. Louis does seem to always pop up as a possible location for a NBA team every time talk about relocation or expansion comes up. So who knows, St. Louis and Chicago could someday become NBA rivals once again…

Casey
Chesney
Meet Casey, a 4 yr. old, very loving, intelligent Rat Terrier Mix. Casey is a very smart girl and knows ‘sit’, ‘down’, ‘come’, ‘drop’, ‘off’, and ‘fetch’. She is a huge snuggle bug and loves to chew on her toys. Casey can get vocal if she sees a squirrel, but is easily redirected. She is house trained and working on her crate training. She walks very nicely on a leash. She’s an all around loving and fun gal looking for her perfect forever home!
This is Chesney, a 3 yr. old Alaskan Malamute/Shepherd mix. Chesney has a great personality, he is super shy at first but if you offer a belly rub, he will be your best friend. He is very smart, soft and cuddly. Chesney loves to play chase with his doggie friends and is also great with cats and kids. He does not require tons of exercise and he loves to lie next to you and snuggle. Chesney is house and crate trained and is working on basic commands.
Lorilei
Culver
Lorilei is a beautiful 2 yr. old Terrier mix who weighs around 30 pounds. She loves to play and romp with other dogs and really enjoys being around kids, cuddling with them on the couch. Lorilei loves to play with other dogs so much that she will jump a short fence to play with her furry neighbors, so she will need a 6-foot fence in her forever home. She is house and crate trained, and will come when called. Lorilei is a very loyal dog and would make someone a great companion.

Meet Culver, a 2 yr. old, 70lb, “special needs” Chocolate Lab mix that loves everything and everyone. Culver is blind and has allergies so he requires a special diet and allergy medicine. He is fantastic with kids of all ages and loves to play with other dogs and cats! Culver is a typical Lab with lots of energy, but settles down nicely when instructed. He is very smart, and being blind does not slow him down! He is fine after learning the house & some help with steps. He knows sit, come, stay, leave it, wait, and listens very well. Culver is house trained and doing very well with crate training. He is a well-adjusted pup that will be a great addition to a family that will understand and embrace his specific needs.

Ah, the Pug life, snorting, snuffing, wheezing, snoring, slobbering, shedding and flatulence. Giz, we all have our issues, where is your sense of humor? You need to focus on your good points... you have a loving, charming, yet mischievous, personality. Remember, as our old friend Snoopy said: “Be yourself; no one can say you’re doing it wrong.” There is no C-Pap device for dogs so you will have to accept it and move on.
