St. Louis

Grande Dames

by Debbie Wheeler, Editor

St. Louis Union Station is now one of America’s great historic tourism destinations and event spaces. Union Station first opened September 1, 1894, and was considered the largest most beautiful terminal in the United States. In its heyday during the mid- 1940’s, over 100,000 passengers a day made their way to and from the trains. As airplanes became the preferred mode of long-distance travel and railroad passengers began using other forms of transportation in the 1950s and 1960s, the massive station became obsolete and too expensive to maintain for its original purpose. Operation as an active rail terminal finally ceased on October 31, 1978 when the last commuter trains pulled out of St. Louis Union Station. But that was not the end of the line… everyone knows you can’t keep a Grande Dame down! A St. Louis icon, Union Station simply could not run out of steam; there needed to be change in order to survive; it required a new purpose to be all that it could be! The gorgeous station was on track once again when it reopened in August of 1985 as the largest adaptive re-use project in the United States geared toward St. Louis tourism, commerce, and events. With yet another purpose for this Grande Dame, St. Louis-based Lodging Hospitality Management, Inc., purchased the property in October 2012 and currently is in the midst of a multi-phase renovation including the hotel, meeting rooms, exhibit space, retail, and outdoor space. The renovation also includes a 200 foot high Ferris wheel, a 75,000 square-foot, aquarium and YES, the return of excursion trains!

Our cover model this month, Jacquelyn Crawford-Mack has also found ways to re purpose herself as she traverses down the curves as well as the straightaways on the rails of life. Jacquelyn Crawford, (Jacquie) known as “Sunny” to her family, is the mother of five grown children. However, when these five children were all under the age of 7, she became a single parent! This event changed her life completely! She had planned on being a homemaker, wife and mother…because back in the late ‘60’s that was what women did. But now with five young children and herself to support, she had to re-evaluate her life. Instead of feeling sorry for herself, she started by looking in the mirror and saying, “I can do this!”

Jacquie went on to college, earning bachelors and master’s degrees in business while raising her children and she hasn’t looked back! When she was 65, (just a few years after having survived a ruptured brain aneurysm and brain surgery), Jacquie decided to live out a life-long dream-mushing a dog-sled team across the frozen Bering Sea in Alaska. “I always wanted to do that, and I thought, well, I’m 65, I need to do it now,” Crawford said. So she did. “I returned home with frostbite and pneumonia, but this trip was worth every ache and pain,” At 77, she continues to make positive changes in her life even when the light at the end of the tunnel looks like a freight train. Jacquie has endured: two TIAs, a ruptured brain aneurysm, brain surgery, a pulmonary embolism, atrial fibrillation, open heart surgery, two total knee replacements (after which she took up tap-dancing; dancing her way to Ms. Senior Missouri in 2010), a pacemaker and a heart attack. “I am truly blessed just to be alive at 77”, says Jacquie. “I want to make a difference - in my life, and more importantly, in the lives of others - yes, I want to “give back”, but that phrase is used so often - so let me say I want to encourage, support, inspire, and help others to be all that they can be. From volunteering with various organizations, to sponsoring children in Guatemala and working there on vacations, offering pet therapy to those in need, volunteering at hospitals - to becoming Ms. Senior Missouri 2010, and given the opportunity to dance and speak at nursing homes and retirement centers, which I continue to do... these are the things I treasure the most. While it was an honor to represent Missouri Senior women, I am most grateful for the doors that it opened and allowed me to meet women I would never have met any other way and inspire them in so many ways. A great gift. That was truly the best part of that Pageant!”

AGING IN PLACE - SAFE AND COMFORTABLE FOR YOU by Mary Jane Kuhn

When you are young and starting out in life you might move around a bit. Jobs change, life happens and you may live in several cities or homes, but at some point in almost everyone’s life, you settle down. Maybe you’ve been in your home for 10 years,

20 years or 40 years. Maybe the home you’re living in now is where you taught your daughter to ride her bike or where everyone gathers for Thanksgiving each year. Maybe it’s where you can sit on the porch and memories of popsicles and skinned knees and the joy of raising your children come flooding back to make you smile. Maybe it’s the place you want to live for as long as you possibly can. As Aging in Place Specialists we work hard to make your home safe and comfortable for you. We can make simple changes in your home, especially your bathroom and kitchen, that will allow you to stay in your home a long time. Sometimes, however, no matter how much we want you to be able to stay in the home where you raised your family, it’s just not possible. One of the biggest reasons people have to move from their beloved homes later in life is because they don’t have a bedroom on the first floor and stairs become too difficult. It’s not always cost effective to do an addition and so moving might be

the best option. If you are in the position where you have to move but aren’t ready to consider a retirement community or nursing home, ask an Aging In Place Specialist to help you house hunt. When you find a home you like, have them come walk through it with you to talk through any improvements that might need to be made to make it as safe and comfortable for you as possible. Important things to look for if you are searching for a new home would be a first floor bedroom or master bedroom, a first floor bathroom, separate or zoned heating and cooling if you do have multiple floors to help save money (so you can turn the upstairs off when you’re not using it), an entrance that could easily support a ramp should a wheelchair ever be necessary and a lawn that is easily maintained. Please call us anytime if you have questions about Aging in Place in your own home or if you are house hunting. Our estimates are free of charge and we are passionate about

helping our clients live where they want to as long as possible. Kuhn Construction Co., Inc. 755 E. Monroe Ave. Oakland, MO 63122 (314) 966-5846 www.kuhnconst.com kuhnconstruction@sbcglobal.net

National VFW Day is observed annually on September 29. This day is devoted to the VFW organization and those members who have served our nation.

The VFW was established on September 29, 1899 by a group of veterans from the Spanish-American war. It has since grown to be the nation’s largest group of combat veterans. They continue “to honor the dead by helping the living.” The VFW promote patriotism, good will and youth scholarships. They also provide military assistance and community service programs, promote youth activities and volunteer many hours in their local communities. Honor the VFW members and veterans in your community. Let them know that you appreciate the sacrifices they have made for all of us. We truly are the land of the free because of the brave.

CHRONIC ACHES AND PAINS: THE PATHWAY TO RELIEF by Sean M. Cristea

The majority of the community members that visit our facility for help complain about chronic aches and pains. Research from the journal Rheumatology suggests that musculoskeletal pain is more common now than is was 40 years ago. Specifically, low back pain has been reported as the second most common form of musculoskeletal degeneration in adult populations, affecting nearly 80% of all adults. If you are one that suffers from aches and pains, there is a 4 step system we teach our members to help alleviate or eliminate the issue. THE 4 STEP PROCESS TO RELIEF

2. LENGTHEN: Lengthening techniques are used to increase the length and range of motion of tissue in the body. Stretching a muscle after you inhibit it is the most effective way in creating a lengthening effect. It is important, however to seek out a qualified professional to help understand which muscles are best to inhibit and lengthen. 3. ACTIVATE: All muscles work together in a pair-like-fashion. When we have an overactive, or tight, muscle we will also create an underactive, or loose, muscle. Because of this duo relationship we must focus on both the overactive and underactive muscles when trying to reduce aches and pains. Activation techniques are designed to reeducate or increase activation of the underactive muscles. This can be accomplished through focused resistance training.

H

ealthy and Active

1. INHIBIT: The first step in our system is to release the tension of overactive tissue in the body. Our brain sends signals to muscles we tend to overuse throughout the day. We must “turn them off” so that we can better lengthen them through stretching. This can be accomplished by utilizing a foam roller, trigger point techniques, or by

seeking a qualified massage therapist to get the job done.

4. INTEGRATE: Muscle pairs of the body function together as families to create movement and posture. We must reteach the body how to use these muscle families to create proper, functional movement and reduce the risk of the pain from returning. Sustainable movement patterns are created only through the integration with the whole body. The continual decrease in everyday activity has contributed to many postural dysfunction and chronic aches and pains. The new mindset in exercise training should address muscle imbalances and movement deficiencies to improve our functional capabilities and decrease our risk of injuries. THE HAIR WHISPERER:

MAINTAINING A HEALTHY SCALP & HAIR FOR IMPROVED HAIR GROWTH by Scott Gardner

in women is less well understood than in men, although we see miniaturization of the hair follicle growth cycle in both, as well as changes in the epidermis in the same area where hair loss has been identified, according to Samuels.

One of the easiest ways to help prevent most causes of pattern hair loss and encourage the growth of miniaturized hair follicles is by maintaining a normal, healthy scalp and hair. Men vs Women: There are several classifications for male and female pattern hair loss, with the most recognized for men being the Hamilton Classification, and for women, the Ludwig Classification. With these classifications, there is a genetic predisposition of certain hair follicles to undergo miniaturization in response to hormones and other factors that create male and female pattern hair loss according to Dr. Lawernce Samuels, Chief Dermatologist at St. Lukes Hospital and renowned Hair Transplant Surgeon at Hans Wiemann Hair Restoration center. Available treatment options for men and women include medical and surgical methods. The pathology of hair thinning

How should I eat for normal blood pressure? Healthy food can help control blood pressure and lower the risk of high blood pressure (hypertension). The Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension (DASH) eating plan: 1)Emphasizes vegetables, fruit, and fat-free or low-fat dairy products 2)Includes whole grains, fish, poultry, vegetable oils, and beans, seeds, and nuts 3)Limits sodium, sweets, sugary beverages, and red meats Do women over 50 need a special diet plan? It’s good for all women - and men - to choose healthy foods to enhance heart health and avoid hypertension, osteoporosis, and diabetes. In general, women need fewer calories and different amounts of vitamins and minerals than men. Some women take dietary supplements, but talk to your doctor before taking them. Choosing healthy foods is a smart thing to do—no matter how old you are! Here are some tips to get you started: • Eat many different colors and types of vegetables and fruits. • Make sure at least half of your grains are

The Scalp’s Role in Hair Growth: The scalp skin can be viewed as a variant of normal skin in that it has an epidermis and dermis, but in addition, has a greater concentration of large, terminal hair follicles. It is well known that the hair follicle has a growth cycle that can be altered by hormones, medications, diet, medical illnesses and many other conditions according to Dr. Samuels. It would appear that the health of the scalp is related to good nutrition and the right hair care products, which can play a major role in hair growth, hair shaft thickness and survival and growth of normal hair follicles. There are several observations that would suggest that the scalp is analogous to topsoil. That is, the thicker the topsoil, the better the grass will grow. This is the case in the scalp. Healthy scalp skin with normal scalp pH, and normal thickness of the epidermis, dermis will improve hair growth and/or decrease in shedding according to Samuels. Maintaining Healthy Hair and Scalp to Improve Growth: In men and women with pattern

hair loss, there are many things that damage the scalp and hair. Sun damage causes thinning of the epidermis and dermis and hair care products and treatments can also cause damage to the hair shaft and scalp skin. Cigarette smoking, excessive alcohol consumption, stress, and specific nutritional and metabolic requirement problems can cause poor hair growth and thinning hair. Any scientific-proven ingredient that can directly stimulate the hair follicle stem cells will stimulate hair growth, increase hair volume, thickness and hair density. There are no quick fixes or hair fertilizers to create growth, but there are things that men and women can do to improve and maintain healthy scalp and hair growth. The scalp and hair have a pH of 4.5+ / -0.5. Maintaining the normal pH of the scalp and hair is important for normal hair growth. Dr. Samuels recommends shampoos which contain ingredients to promote healthy scalp and hair are designed to clean dirt, sebum, oil and dead skin cells from the scalp and to promote normal scalp skin, exfoliation and maintain the normal acidic pH of the scalp, such as, Gen-Tecs Volumizing Shampoo. Conditioners which contain ingredients to promote healthy scalp and hair are designed to restore the normal acid pH of the scalp skin, reduce tangle and restore the normal moisture content of the hair shaft, such as, Gen-Tecs

Volumizing Conditioner. The moisture retention of the hair shaft is pH dependent. Acidic pH causes the cuticle cells to flatten and seals the moisture into the hair shaft. Safe chemical treatments to the hair shaft do not have a negative impact on the scalp, hair follicle, or hair growth. Nutrition also plays an important role in healthy hair growth according to Dr. Samuels. Hair is composed of keratin protein and amino acids. It is more effective to take a multivitamin and amino acid supplement on a daily basis, such as Gen-Tecs Aminoplex. Creating and maintaining healthy, normal hair growth and scalp skin is a daily activity that requires a life-style change to maintain the benefits of a good hair care program. Appropriate hair care products with the right ingredients, appropriate pH and proven results will create and maintain a healthy scalp and hair growth. Be an active participant in your hair thinning problem and remember real science produces real results. Gen-Tecs products can be found only at Hans Wiemann.

HEALTHY EATING AFTER 50 whole grains. • Eat only small amounts of solid fats and foods with added sugars. Limit saturated fat (found mostly in foods that come from animals) and trans fats (found in foods like store-bought baked goods and some margarines). • Eat “good” (poly- and monounsaturated) fats, like those found in seeds, nuts, avocados, and fatty fish like salmon. Any fats added in cooking should come from olive, canola, corn, or vegetable oil. • Eat seafood twice a week. Small fish, like sardines or trout, or farm-raised fish (check the label) contain less mercury than large fish, like tuna. Mercury can be harmful. Make Smart Food Choices Eating a variety of foods from each food group will help you get the nutrients you need. The 2015-2020 Dietary Guidelines for Americans from the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) and Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) describes healthy eating patterns. You create a healthy eating pattern by making good choices about your foods and drinks every day. These

guidelines are flexible to help you choose a diet of nutritious foods and drinks that you like, that are available in your area, and that fit your budget. The Dietary Guidelines suggests that people 50 or older choose foods every day from the following: Fruits - 1½ to 2½ cups What is the same as a half cup of cut-up fruit? A fresh 2-inch peach or 16 grapes. Vegetables - 2 to 3½ cups What is the same as a cup of cut-up vegetables? 2 cups of uncooked leafy vegetables. Grains - 5 to 10 ounces What is the same as an ounce of grains? A small bagel, a slice of whole grain bread, a cup of flaked ready-to-eat cereal, or a half cup of cooked rice or pasta. Protein foods - 5 to 7 ounces What is the same as an ounce of meat, fish, or poultry? One egg, one fourth cup of cooked beans or tofu, a half ounce of nuts or seeds, or 1 tablespoon of peanut butter. Dairy foods - 3 cups of fat-free or low-fat milk What is the same as 1 cup of milk? One

cup of plain yogurt or 1½ to 2 ounces of cheese. 1 cup of cottage cheese is the same as a half cup of milk. Oils - 5 to 8 teaspoons What is the same as oil added during cooking? Foods like olives, nuts, and avocados have a lot of oil in them. Solid fats and added sugars (SoFAS) and sodium (salt) - keep the amount of SoFAS and sodium small If you eat too many foods containing SoFAS, you will not have enough calories left for the more nutritious foods you should be eating. Your doctor may want you to follow a special diet because you have a health problem like heart disease or diabetes. Or, you might have been told to avoid eating some foods because they can change how well your medicines work. Talk with your doctor or a registered dietitian—a nutrition specialist—about foods you can eat instead. Here’s a tip: Stay away from “empty calories.” These are foods and drinks with a lot of calories but not many nutrients—for example, chips, cookies, soda, and alcohol. © National Institute on Aging www.nia.nih.gov

As winter continues across most of the country, this part of California is ideal for a break from the cold weather, with daytime temperatures in the 70’s. DIRECTIONS Tours is offering this exclusive winter getaway vacation tour. After our nonstop Southwest Airlines flight from St. Louis to Los Angeles, we will transfer to our deluxe accommodations in San Clamente for the next two nights. We will enjoy the pristine Pacific beaches, historic pier and village while here.

www.directionstours.com

Next, this exciting tour package includes The Pacific Surfliner Train from San Clamente to San Diego. This four hour excursion hugs the Pacific coast as you admire the ocean views. The Pacific Surfliner route offers a unique vantage on the Southern California seascape. As they say... to get a closer look, you’d have to be on a surfboard! Once we arrive in beautiful San Diego, we will transfer to our deluxe accommodations for the next three nights! Our hotel is directly on the San Diego Bay and Marina overlooking the San Diego skyline and harbor. The next few days we will enjoy San Diego’s diverse attractions, from beautiful Pacific coast beaches to historic sights. A locally guided city tour will feature many of San Diego’s best architecture, history and current day information. A trip to San Diego would not be complete without time to visit the famous Hotel del Coronado. A beautiful historic hotel, it was originally built in 1885. This wooden Victorian beach resort is located immediately behind the beach, facing the Pacific Ocean. It remains the largest beach resort on the North American Pacific Coast. Another day will include free-time to relax, enjoy the hotel pools and marina or how about taking a whale /dolphin watching excursion or spending the day at the San Diego Zoo! Before departing beautiful San Diego, we will also enjoy a harbor boat cruise and the Seaport Village.

By Tod DeHart

Our tour will then travel through South Cal’s beautiful farmlands. California’s agriculture is the most productive and varied in the U.S.; owing to the climate, topography, complex systems of water delivery, and diverse population of growers. Coastal temperatures are fairly consistent, and can support year-round production of many row crops. Two of South California’s major crops include fruits and nuts. A visit to Bates Nut Farm will highlight this agricultural valley. The tour will then follow the Pacific coast northward to Oceanside, California - “America’s Surf City”. Enjoy a tour of town, the beach and pier. Another stop will be at the Mission San Luis Rey De Francia. Founded in 1798 by Padre Fermin Francisco de Lasuen, the Mission was named after St. Louis IX, King of France, who lived during the 13th century. Our last evening will be near the Anaheim area prior to our morning nonstop Southwest Airlines flight back to St. Louis. Don’t miss out on this incredible winter getaway to Southern Califonia with us! For more details on this tour vacation - see inside this Explore Edition or give us a call.

VOTE FOR SMART INVESTMENT MOVES Jeff Ponte, Edward Jones Advisor

The presidential election is little more than a month away. Like all elections, this one has generated considerable interest, and, as a citizen, you may well be following it closely. But as an investor, how much should you be concerned about the outcome? Probably not as much as you might think. Historically, the financial markets have done well – and done poorly – under both Democratic and Republican administrations. Also, many factors affecting investment performance have little or nothing to do with the occupant of the White House. Consequently, no one can claim, with any certainty, that one candidate is going to be “better for the markets” than another one. Still, this isn’t to say that any given presidential administration will have no effect at all on investors. For example, a president could propose changes to the laws governing investments, and if Congress passes those laws, investors could be affected.

But in looking at the broader picture, there’s not much evidence that a particular president is going to affect the overall return of your investment portfolio. As mentioned above, many factors – corporate earnings, interest rates, foreign affairs, even natural disasters – can and will influence the financial markets. But in evaluating a president’s potential effect on your investments, you also need to consider something else: Our political system does not readily accommodate radical restructuring of any kind. So it’s difficult for any president to implement huge policy shifts – and that’s actually good for the financial markets, which, by their nature, dislike uncertainty, chaos and big changes. The bottom line? From your viewpoint as an investor, don’t worry too much about what happens in November. Instead, follow these investment strategies:

• Stay invested. If you stop investing when the market is down in an effort to cut your losses, you may miss the opportunity to participate in the next rally – and the early stages of a rally are typically when the biggest gains occur. • Diversify. By spreading your dollars among an array of investments, such as stocks, bonds and other investments, you can help reduce the possibility of your portfolio taking a big hit if a market downturn primarily affected just one type of financial asset. Keep in mind though, that diversification can’t guarantee profits or protect against all losses. • Stay within your risk tolerance. Investing always involves risk, but you’ll probably be more successful (and less stressed out) if you don’t stray beyond your individual risk tolerance. At the same time, if you invest too conservatively, you might not achieve the growth potential you need to reach your goals. So you will

need to strike an appropriate balance. • Forget about chasing “hot” stocks. Many so-called “experts” encourage people to invest in today’s “hot” stocks. But by the time you hear about them, these stocks – if they were ever “hot” to begin with – have probably already cooled off. More importantly, they might not have been suitable for your needs, anyway. In any case, there’s really no “short cut” to investment success. Elections – and even presidents – come and go. But when you “vote” for solid investment moves, you can help yourself make progress toward your financial goals. SUPPORTING PROP S - A SENIOR CITIZEN SERVICE FUND

Seniors Count of Greater St. Louis is a local initiative supported by a coalition of community organizations and eldercare agencies. The mission of Seniors Count is to address the quickly growing gap between the needs of seniors and available resources in our community. Our population is rapidly aging, especially as the Baby Boomer generation reaches retirement age. Perhaps you have heard of this as the “silver tsunami”; until 2030, the number of people 65 years old and older in St Louis is projected to increase by 15,000 every year. In the next three decades, the number of people in that senior set will jump by 77 percent; almost 300,000 people. Census figures from 2014 show the St Louis area had the eighth highest percentage of older people in the country, at 14.9 percent, and by 2045 it is projected that a full quarter

of the region’s population with be 65 or older. One of the most important ways our community can prepare for the aging of our residents, is to create a local resource which will support “aging in place”. This allows people to remain in their homes, independently, as long as possible. Assisted living facilities, group homes, cost about four times more than when someone is able to live independently, in their own home. The biggest needs for this growing group are affordable transportation and accessible housing. Currently, services are grossly under or unfunded. To help accommodate the growing needs, Proposition S has been placed on the November ballot in St. Charles County, St. Louis County, and St. Louis City to establish a Senior Citizen’s Service Fund. What’s at stake if we fail to act? Currently there are waiting lists for services such as Meals on Wheels and senior transportation. Waitlists for respite caregivers cannot even be established as the Alzheimer’s Association is out of

funds for this program within the first two weeks of the year, due to the high demand for respite care services. A Senior Citizen’s Service Fund is a viable solution to some of these issues. Passing Proposition S would give counties an ongoing resource to draw funds from to distribute to senior service providers in order to expand the reach of services. How will it work? Proposition S will raise property taxes by $9.50 for every $100,000 of a home’s assessed value (i.e. a $200,000 home will see an increase of only $19 in property tax annually). The revenue raised will be deposited into a dedicated Senior Citizen’s Service Fund, allocated by an independent board to agencies (both for profit and non-profit eligible) for providing services for senior citizens in their homes. This is a proven, cost-effective way to provide for the needs of the senior population. 51 of the 114 Missouri counties have already adopted this measure, as allowed by Missouri law since 1990, and are currently serving their senior populations with these funds. None of these counties with existing Seniors Citizen’s Service Funds are

in the St Louis area. If approved by voters in November, this initiative will improve the ability of our metro region’s three largest counties to better address needs of seniors. For more information or to get involved with the initiative, visit SeniorsCountSTL.com or CALL: Seniors Count at 314-513-9938

St. Louis Union Station - A Stage For History by NiNi Harris, Historian

IT HAPPENED IN ST. LOUIS 50 YEARS AGO…

© MGM

St. Louis’ magnificent Union Station speaks of the great artistry of the Victorian era and of the might of the industrial revolution. It inspires awe. Throughout its decades and throughout its incarnations, this grand Union Station has been the scene of countless dramas from American history. The one I find most touching, was told to me by a woman from New Jersey. Years ago in Union Station, this woman from New Jersey trapped me when I was on my way to the restroom. I only had a few minutes to get to the restroom and back to the tour bus, but this woman insisted, “You are a historian so I have to tell you about the last time I was here.” She said that it was during World War Two and she was a young wife with a baby. Her husband had sent her news to bring the baby and come see him at his Army Post out West. He wanted to see them before he was sent overseas. From New Jersey, she had made it by rail to St. Louis, where she needed to transfer trains. But priority for all seating on passenger trains was given to military men, and Union Station was a portal for Jefferson Barracks, Scott Air Force Base and Fort Leonard Wood as well as being a major passenger rail hub. Soldiers, sailors and airmen, heading for an uncertain and often terrifying future, packed the station and the trains. So the young woman from New Jersey sat in Union Station’s Grand Hall, with her baby in arms, waiting for an available seat on a train. One train after another departed, filled with men in uniform. Hours passed. She was exhausted. She saw another young woman with a baby and suggested they work together to watch the babies, get snacks, go to the restroom and check the ticket counter. For the longest time, the woman sat mute. Finally she answered her suggestion. She explained that she

was from a small town in Arkansas. Her husband had sent word to bring the baby and come see him before he was sent overseas. Since she had not been out of her small town before, he had told her not to speak to anyone. Just get to him. The two young wives helped each other take care of their young ones as they waited two days to get seats on a train heading west. Once on the train, that was filled with young soldiers, they fell asleep. The lady from New Jersey did not know how long she slept, uninterrupted. When she woke, the two young wives and mothers were surrounded by young soldiers who were taking care of their babies. They were playing with them and laughing and smiling. While the women slept, the soldiers had washed all their dirty diapers in the restroom sink. To dry them, they had hung one diaper out each window. As the train was speeding west on the tracks, the laundered diapers were flying from the train windows. © 2016 by NiNi Harris

On September 2, 1966, a television pilot, Meet Me in St. Louis, aired on ABC. The story, based on the characters from the 1944 MGM musical hit by the same name, which starred Judy Garland, was about one day in the life of the Smith family, leading up to the opening of the 1904 World’s Fair. This pilot, a non-musical version, starred Shelley Fabares, Celeste Holm, Larry Merrill, Judy Land, Reta Shaw and Morgan Brittany. Directed by Alan D. Courtney from a script written by Sally Benson, this was to be a pilot for a weekly TV series, but no network picked it up. This 1966 version of Meet Me in St. Louis was included as a special feature on a Warner Brothers DVD set released in 2004.

Meet Me in St. Louis Trivia: The original 1944 film was where director, Vincente Minnelli and Hollywood star, Judy Garland first met. The famous couple later married in June, 1945, and daughter, Liza Minnelli, was born nine months later. “This is the first picture my father and mother did together,” said Liza Minnelli in a 1987 interview. “It’s also the first one in which she said she felt beautiful on the screen. In the beginning she hadn’t wanted to make Meet Me in St. Louis. Before it was finished, she loved it and the director who expressed his feelings for her in every shot.” The couple made several more films together before divorcing in 1951. The 1966 pilot was the second time that actress Reta Shaw was cast as ‘Katie’ the maid in Meet Me in St. Louis; the other time was in a 1959 TV remake of the original movie.

Stan

Makita

Hi There, I’m Stan, a 5 year old Shih Tzu mix. I am a pretty sweet, cuddly little guy that would love to snuggle with you and play with my toys. I like other dogs, but it would be nice to be the only dog. I prefer no young children in my new home. I’m also house and crate trained.

I’m Makita and a real sweetheart, 1 year old Pit Bull Terrier mix. I love to be around people, going for walks and playing with my toys. I also like dogs, kids and cats. Because my foster mom says I have high energy level, any children in my forever home should be 10 years or older. I am house and crate trained and working on basic commands, but my foster mom said that’s pretty easy since I love to eat, so I am food motivated.

Jupiter

Lazlo

I’m Jupiter, a 2 year old Dalmatian mix and just a sweet girl with a goofy, fun loving personality. I am blind in my left eye but that does not slow me down one bit. Even though I have a higher energy level, I will calm down with the proper amount of exercise and play time. I like other dogs and love spending time at doggie daycare playing with my friends. I like women but I’m cautious with some new men at first, but give me time to warm up to you. I need a home with no kids. I walk well on leash and know many different commands I am crate and house trained too.

TO ADOPT ONE OF THESE PETS VISIT: www.needypaws.org

Hi, my name is Lazlo and I am a 1 year old Border Collie mix. My foster mom says I am a great dog and I don’t chew on anything except my toys and chewies. I am young and playful, but a daily walk with a little play time is all I need. I get along really well with other dogs but I don’t really need another pet in my new home. I like to play fetch, chase balls and sticks. I like being around people and I am house and crate trained too. I need a home with at least a 6 foot fence since I can easily jump a shorter fence, but I am learning to stay in my own yard. I love being part of a family... Can I join yours?

Hello furry friends! My name is Willow and I am a canine amateur advisor. What qualifies me, you ask? I have been homeless, lived in a shelter, survived heartworm disease, and stayed in a foster home. I have overcome! In my neighborhood I am known for barking; sound, compassionate advice in a high-spirited style. Please send me your questions, concerns or comments ... After all my advice is free; it won’t even cost you a treat. Woof!

Without more information, I can only guess that this has happened to you. Hypothetical: I am 15 pounds and I will guess a man to be 200 pounds. So, Mike, imagine you are sitting at your table, ready to indulge in a delicious dinner, and a man 13 times bigger than you steps by your plate. Whoa! I am guessing you would kick or punch that person, or at least yell at them. Humans need to remember that survival is in a dog’s nature, especially one who was homeless, hungry, and constantly searching for any bits of food. Have you ever experienced food insecurity, Mike? Now if you’ll excuse me, I am going to eat my dinner in peace. Watch your step now!
