Happy Holiday’s St. Louis!
Fresh, Plastic or Aluminum?
By Rick Dungey
Each holiday season, shoppers find themselves confronted with a choice: celebrate with a fresh, real tree, or one that is artificial plastic or aluminum. There are benefits for each, but what most people don’t realize is that the best choice has always been the traditional and natural choice - a Real Christmas Tree. Did you know that Real Christmas Trees are grown on farms just like any other agricultural crop like corn or apples? To ensure a constant supply, Christmas
Tree growers plant one to three new seedlings for every tree they harvest each year. There are many sizes, types and varieties of Real Christmas Trees available to consumers now-a-days, so educate yourself before you head out to the farm or your local retail lot. Many common Christmas Tree species are: balsam fir, Douglas-fir, Fraser fir, noble fir, Scotch pine, Virginia pine and white pine. The National Christmas Tree Association is the national ...

Savannah and Charleston Savannah, Georgia and Charleston, South Carolina are two historical cities located in the southeastern United States. They beckon as a lover does, whispering their stories, begging for you to stroll their mysterious lanes and squares, unfurling their magic before your eyes and enchanting you at every corner. These cities captivate with their charm, architecture, cuisine, history and culture. One visit and you’ll long to return time after time, drinking in all of the rich sights and sounds that these cities so freely give. Charleston is the oldest city in South Carolina and is located on Charleston Harbor, an inlet of the Atlantic Ocean which is formed by the joining of the Cooper and Ashley Rivers. Charleston was founded in 1670
and named Charles Town after King Charles 11 of England. The first settlers of Charles Town were mainly from England but there were also people who came from its Caribbean colony of Barbados and its Atlantic colony of Bermuda. They added a distinct flavor to the city as did the migration of the French, Irish, Scottish and Germans. These groups were joined by a large number of Sephardic Jews and by the beginning of the 19th century, Charles Towne was home to the largest and wealthiest Jewish community in North America, and it remained so until about 1830. The port became a dropping off point for Africans captured and transferred to the American English colonies as slaves. By the mid-18th century, Charles

The association represents more than 700 active member farms, 29 state and regional associations, and more than 4,000 affiliated businesses that grow and sell Christmas trees or provide related supplies and services. Members are located throughout North America, as well as in South America and Europe. It is estimated that those affiliated with the NCTA produce roughly threequarters of the farm-raised Christmas trees in the United States.
Here are a few things to take into consideration when deciding on what type of tree to buy for your holiday season. While they’re growing, Real Christmas Trees support life by absorbing carbon dioxide and other gases and emitting fresh oxygen. Artificial trees are a petroleumbased product manufactured primarily in Chinese factories. The average family uses a fake tree for only six to nine years before throwing it away; remaining in a landfill for centuries after disposal.
Christmas Trees are often grown on soil that does not support other crops. The farms that grow Christmas Trees stabilize the soil, protect water supplies and provide refuge for wildlife. Farm-grown trees are biodegradable, which means they can easily be reused or recycled for mulch or other purposes. The polyvinyl chloride (PVC) used in most artificial trees has been boycotted by environmental and health groups. Swedish researchers found that Real Trees are five times more environmentally
compatible than fake trees. American Forests, a world leader in tree planting for environmental restoration, has publicly endorsed the commercial growing and use of farm-grown Christmas Trees. Real Trees can be recycled in a number of ways, including mulch for parks and trails, in lakes and ponds for fish habitat, dune and coastline restoration efforts and as boiler fuel for factories. This holiday season, why not join the other 25 - 30 million families in the U.S. that will decorate with a farm-

DURABLE POWERS OF ATTORNEY AND LIVING WILLS by Mark Easley, Attorney at Law
One of my main goals while working with clients on the issue of estate planning, is to ensure that all of the family’s estate matters remain private and cost efficient. Too often, individuals wait until it is too late to address these issues. If these matters aren’t handled before incapacity, the family will be required to set up an expensive and time-consuming courtsupervised guardianship. Thankfully, a few simple documents can help you to avoid these difficulties.
Durable Power of Attorney Through a Durable Power of Attorney, you name a trusted individual (your “Agent” or “AttorneyIn-Fact”) and give them the power and authority to act on your behalf in legal and financial matters. The Durable Power of Attorney may be immediately effective or may be invoked upon your incapacity to handle any funds that may
be needed for your care. Granting such a power over one’s assets to another can make some people nervous. However, your Durable Power of Attorney may be drafted so that your Agent can act on your behalf ONLY in the event of your incapacity; otherwise, you and you alone would have access to your assets. Healthcare Power of Attorney Similarly, a Healthcare Power of Attorney allows another trusted individual to make certain medical decisions, gain access to medical records and make provisions for your care during any period of disability. By executing a Healthcare Power of Attorney, you can ensure that your care will be administered efficiently and effectively in the event of incapacity due to accident or illness; any necessary decisions regarding your care can be made
immediately without the need for a court-supervised guardianship. Living Wills Unfortunately, a situation may arise in which you are unconscious, perhaps due to a serious accident, and it is determined that you will not regain consciousness, or that you cannot survive without artificial means. A Living Will can be used to address such situations. Under a Living Will, you can direct your physicians to terminate the use of any artificial means to prolong your life if there is no possibility of recovery. By executing a Living Will, you can keep your loved ones from having to make such a difficult decision; additionally, the Living Will can save thousands of dollars that could be incurred in prolonged, unnecessary medical care.

Mark Easley, Attorney at Law
Conclusion Fortunately, establishing powers of attorney and living wills can be simple and inexpensive. In fact, many hospitals have Healthcare Power of Attorney and Living Will forms available to their patients to sign. However, the Durable Power of Attorney should be prepared by an attorney to make sure that the laws of your state of residence are taken into consideration. All families should take the time to make sure that these documents are all in place and up to date. Our firm recommends that you have several successor agents on the Durable Power of Attorney and the Healthcare Power of Attorney so that if one agent becomes disabled or dies, you will have another agent ready to step forward to act for you. REVERSE MORTGAGES IN REAL LIFE SITUATIONS by Kevin Kohler, Sr., Reverse Specialist
Meet Diane...
Diane is 68 years old, and was enjoying the retired life with her husband until two years ago, when he passed suddenly of a heart attack. They had lived modestly, but comfortably, with enough savings to enjoy the travelling that they so loved to do, while they lived their day to day life off of their combined pensions. After dealing with the shock and arrangements of her husband’s passing, it was about a year later, when it was becoming clear that the loss of her husband’s pension was creating a financial difficulty. She remained with a mortgage balance
on her home of about $60,000 and monthly payments of about $700. Her pension alone could not cover the mortgage, utilities, groceries, and medicines. She began withdrawing more from her retirement accounts, and in talking with her financial advisor found that the retirement fund would be depleted by the time she was 73. Not wanting to leave the home she and her husband had made memories in for the past 40 years, her financial advisor suggested she look into a reverse mortgage. She had plenty of equity in her home, but could not afford the payments she currently had, let alone borrow more of the equity and incur more monthly payments. With the reverse mortgage, which requires no monthly payments, she was able to draw enough equity from her home to pay off the existing mortgage and an additional $30,000 to put away in savings for future security. Freeing her from the monthly payment obligation, she could continue to live comfortably
and her pension could cover the utilities, groceries, and medicines. She did not have to keep drawing from the retirement account, and had her emergency savings in place.
Meet Richard and Constance...
Richard, 70, and Constance, 69, had always loved rehabbing the homes in which they’ve lived. There wasn’t a home improvement show on TV they missed. After retiring a few years before, they always talked about wanting to get into buying some fixer-uppers that they could work on and sell. They would dream about taking the profit from selling the home and taking a vacation with it. However, they always agreed that they would not dip into their retirement accounts to fund this, and they lived on a very strict budget. They knew there were risks involved with taking on traditional loans to buy these; 1) coming up with 20% for a down payment, 2)

With a Reverse Mortgage, you can access equity in your home to:
holding costs of continued monthly payments if the home didn’t sell right away, 3) coming up with the additional renovation funds. Richard and Constance got creative. They owned their home free and clear and decided that they could take out a reverse mortgage as a line of credit on their home. Richard and Constance could take out a $75,000 line of credit, used to draw against to purchase a fixerupper, and have the funds to renovate it. They would not be required to make any monthly payments, and when they finished a home and sold it, they could pay the line of credit back down, and use the additional profit to take their vacations.

CHECK OUT THESE END-OF-YEAR INVESTMENT TIPS by Jeff Ponte, Edward Jones Advisor
END-OF-YEAR
Who knows where the time goes? Although 2015 is almost in the books, you can still make some yearend investment and financial moves that may help you get off to a good start in 2016. Here are a few suggestions: • Boost your 401(k) contributions. Ask your employer if you still have time to add more to your 401(k) before the year ends. If not, at least increase your contributions in 2016, especially if your salary goes up. • Consider “tax-loss” selling. We experienced considerable turbulence in the financial markets this past year, so you may own some investments that have lost value. Generally
speaking, it’s a good idea to hold these investments if they still meet your needs, but if you do decide to sell them, you can use the loss to offset capital gains taxes on investments you’ve sold that have appreciated. If the loss from the sale was greater than your combined long- and short-term capital gains, you can deduct up to $3,000 against other income. And if your losses exceed your capital gains by more than $3,000, you can carry the remaining losses forward to future tax years. • Review your asset allocation. Make sure your asset allocation – that is, your investment mix – is still appropriate for your time horizon and goals. You might consider being a bit more aggressive if you’re not meeting your financial targets, or more conservative if you’re getting closer to retirement. If you want greater diversification, you might think about adding an asset class that tends to react to market conditions differently from your
existing investments. Diversifying your portfolio may help reduce the impact of volatility; however, diversification, by itself, can’t guarantee a profit or protect against loss. If you do need to adjust, or “rebalance,” you can do so fairly easily in tax-deferred accounts, such as your IRA or 401(k) – but for those investments held in a taxable account, you should talk to your tax advisor on how to manage the tax consequences of rebalancing. • Evaluate your insurance situation. This past year, did you undergo any changes in your personal life, such as marriage, divorce or the addition of a new child? If so, review your life and disability insurance to make sure they are sufficient for your needs, and list the proper beneficiaries on all insurance policies. • Start an emergency fund. If you don’t already have one, start an emergency fund before the year is out. Ideally, you’d like to have
between six and 12 months’ worth of living expenses in such a fund; without it, you might be forced to dip into your long-term investments to pay for unexpected costs, such as a new furnace, a major car repair or a big medical bill. For this fund, you’re less interested in return than in preservation of principal, so put your money in a low-risk, liquid account. Making these moves can help you close out 2015 on a positive note – and ring in the new year with greater confidence in your financial future. For additional information about End-of-Year Investment tips contact Jeff Ponte, your local Edward Jones advisor. Fort Sullivan was built to defend the harbour. In 1780 the British gained and remained in control of the city until 1782. After they departed, the city was renamed Charleston. The invention of the cotton gin in 1793 brought prosperity to South Carolina and cotton quickly became its hottest commodity. On December 20 of 1860, South Carolina seceded from the Union and suffered massive damage during those years. The war shattered the once prosperous city and brought in its place, poverty and hopelessness. Charleston began to prosper again in the 1970’s and today is a vibrant and captivating city known for its art, music, local food, and fashion. Here it easy to lose oneself in gumbo, fried oysters, shrimp and grits and lowcountry boils. Today the descendants of slaves weave intricate sweetgrass baskets, a traditional art form passed down for generations. During the plantation era, sweetgrass baskets were used in the fields for carrying crops and it was not unusual for plantation owners to sell the baskets for extra income. It is the oldest form of African artwork in the United States, and no trip to Charleston would be complete without a stop at a sweetgrass basket stand. One of Charleston’s most unique stops is at the Charleston Tea Plantation Located on beautiful Wadmalaw Island, just 20 miles
south of downtown Charleston, it is the only working tea plantation in the United States. The plantation uses the Camellia sinensis plant to produce a delicious black tea. The plantation packages American Classic Tea and sells six different flavors in tea bags or the loose tea form. The tea is harvested from May to October and the plantation offers tours through the farm and tasting center. Savannah, named for the Savannah River, is just a two hour drive from Charleston. Established in 1733, it was a strategic port during the American Revolution and the Civil War. Millions of tourists visit Savannah each year savoring its rich architecture and historic buildings. This is where you will find the birthplace of Juliette Gordon Low, founder of the Girl Scouts. Savannah consists of 22 park like squares in the historic district and each one retains its own charm and uniqueness. Here you can rest on park benches, surrounded by aged oak trees draped with Spanish moss. Take a moment to breathe in the scent of flowering plants and listen to the sound of water coming from decorative fountains. Savannah today is the fourth largest container ship port in North America and its bustling riverfront area is a delight to stroll. It is on the river front that the The Waving Girl statue is located.
Majestic live oak trees and spanish moss line Savannah’s historic streets The statue recalls a bittersweet story that intrigues both locals and visitors alike. The daughter of a sergeant stationed at Fort Pulaski, Florence lived in a cottage along the river near the entrance to the harbour. Life was lonely for Florence and she was always seen with her faithful Collie waving a handkerchief and welcoming incoming ships into Savannah. At nightfall, she would stand by with lantern in hand to greet the ships. She fell in love with a sailor who promised to come back and make her his wife. Florence waited, but to no avail, for the sailor never returned. She continued greeting every single ship that approached the harbour for forty four years and welcomed over 500,000 vessels into Savannah. Florence grew into a
Savannah legend and sculptor Felix De Weldon fixed her image in immortality. Florence was beloved by seamen for decades and her statue was delivered to the city free of charge, by ship, of course! In 1943 the SS Florence Martus, a Liberty Ship, was christened in her honor. The Waving Girl statue is just one of many delights that Savannah offers the traveler. DIRECTIONS Tours will be visiting both Charleston and Savannah April 18-24, 2015. Won’t you come along and let the stories of these two captivating cities become a part of your story and life? Travel Healthy and Happy
by Tod DeHart
Travel is fun and exciting, but it is also a a great way to enhance your life in many ways! Travel is proven to be one of the best ways to make your life healthier, happier, stronger and more fullfilled. Actual studies have proven that travel increases well-being, learning experiences, decreased stress levels, and creates memories of a lifetime. In addition, traveling builds stronger relationships, new friendships and connects people to new ideas and cultures. Vacation and relaxation go hand in hand. When leaving home (or work) and adventuring away from “the norm”, we leave our day to day lives and responsibilities far behind. This allows our bodies to reset our biological body clock. Notably, studies have shown decreased stress levels in people who travel. Reducing the amount of stress over just one week away on a trip, travelers registered lower levels of stress hormones in their saliva. Limiting our stress,
our bodies no longer synchronize with the clock, but instead, with the sunrise and sunset. It is common knowledge that travel brings people together and builds new and everlasting relationships. Whether you travel alone, with family, or with friends, a vacation get away improves and creates relationships and friendships. In my 20 years of professionaltravel experience, I have taken joy and pleasure in seeing so many new relationships form and grow while adventuring out. One of my greatest joys is introducing single travelers to new people, which ultimately become lifelong friendships. Because of this, I decided to create a more affordable pricing package for single travelers with DIRECTIONS Tours. When traveling as a single, one must pay more money in most cases (due to not spliting hotel costs). This leads to higher single supplemental costs and deters many people from traveling alone. So... I went to work with our vendors and negotiated better...

TODAY’S HAIR TRANSPLANTS: THIS IS NOT YOUR FATHER’S HAIR PLUGS! by Scott Gardner
When one thinks about hair transplants in today’s ever changing hair restoration market, a nightmare image may come to mind! The vision of “Dolls Hair” from the hair plug transplant method that was popular over 40-years ago may be what you remember. Although “Hair Plugs” is still a popular term used by the general population, this method is no longer being used in the U.S. anymore. The plug refers to the old round grouping of hairs that would be inserted into the scalp. This is very real hair and behaves in the same way real hair does. The down side is it looks fake due to the size of the plug, the round look it has, and the gaps that occur between plugs. The industry has advanced by “Leaps & Bounds” over the past 20-years to what is currently being used today, which is the FUT (Follicular
Unit Transportation) method and the FUE (Follicular Unit Extraction) procedure. FUT is also frequently referred to as the “strip method”. FUT is an older means of extracting donor hair, whereby a surgeon excises a linear strip of hair and tissue from the back of the scalp. This tissue is then dissected into individual follicular units, by surgical technicians, and then placed in the thinning or balding recipient regions. Meanwhile, the wound is closed with the use of sutures. One of the major drawbacks of the FUT method is that the patient will be left with a linear scar on the backside of their head. This scar will be detectable if the patient opts to wear their hair very short, and may stretch over time. Strip procedures also permanently distort the direction of hair growth along the perimeter of the scar. FUE (Follicular Hair Extraction) With FUE transplantation, the donor hair available for extraction is maximized due to the ability of FUE surgeons to harvest hair from the “donor area”. Additionally, FUE doctors can select the follicular units that will offer the most hairs per graft, and
produce an optimal yield. Conversely, strip procedures limit surgeons to use only those hairs found in a single strip scalp tissue. FUE hair transplantation offers a number of advantages over FUT/Strip procedures. FUE does not leave a linear scar or need sutures, minimal discomfort, and minimal downtime. Also it does not distort growth angles of hair. Now comes the latest and most advanced hair replacement system in the world. It is called ARTAS and the Robotic Revolution has arrived!!! Using advanced digital imaging and precision robotics, the ARTAS system enables physicians with a level of control and accuracy that cannot be matched by other methods including (FUE) Manually Operated Devices with a handheld tool or (FUT) Strip Method. By updating coordinates every 20 millisecond, the ARTAS system’s image guided robotics harvest follicular units for transplant w with micron-level precision. With a handheld FUE unit, all harvesting is performed by “punching out” hairs by hand. ARTAS uses high resolution digital imaging to provide unparalleled visual detail of donor
area. The FUE depends entirely on human eye-hand coordination, so there is a chance of error and a high degree of human fatigue. There is no possibility of fatigue with the robot and the patented blunt dissection technique is designed to produce minimal scarring and healthy grafts. Also, the information is limited with the FUE unit to what can be interpreted by using magnification. ARTAS uses intelligent algorithms to identify and select only the best hair for harvesting, thus insuring consistent results and a uniformly harvested donor area. There is no linear scar, no sutures, and only minimal downtime and ARTAS is the only FDA approved robotic hair transplant procedure in the world. ARTAS is a “game changer” for the hair restoration industry and is available exclusively within a 750 mile radius at Hans Wiemann Salon. Call 314-721-6657 today to schedule your FREE Hair & Scalp analysis or visit our website at hanshairloss.com and watch our ARTAS video and how ARTAS can help you get your own hair back! WINTERIZE YOUR SKIN by Kellie Salter - Rodan & Fields
With winter upon us, I decided to provide a few quick tips to Winterize Your Skin. Just like you winterize your home by switching screen doors with storm doors and replacing weatherstripping, you need to protect your skin from the elements, too. Here’s how to winterize your skin so it will stay looking great as the cold chill sets in. As the air gets cooler and drier, hydrate from the outside in by adding an additional heavier moisturizer to your daily skincare routine. Overnight Restorative Cream is an excellent option. In addition to modifying your skincare regimen, it is crucial to take care of yourself from within. Let’s start by drinking plenty of water! This should be on the top of your ‘to-do’
list year round, however in the dry air of fall & winter it is critical! Focus on eating wholesome and well balanced meals. Staying hydrated will help keep your skin looking beautiful. Try a humidifier in your bedroom while you sleep. The additional moisture it provides is invaluable and will not only improve the tone and texture of your skin, it also decreases sinus sensitivity and keeps hair and nails hydrated too! While it’s important to cleanse your hands frequently during cold and flu season, unless you moisturize after every wash, you’ll experience dry, cracked skin and brittle nails. Rodan + Fields REDEFINE Brightening Hand Treatment relieves the discomfort associated with hand washing and the drying effects of the environment. This nongreasy treatment helps retain skin’s natural moisturizing factors to effectively improve elasticity and resiliency, while skin brighteners visibly even skin tone and improve the appearance of hands. Use a gentle exfoliator from head to toe to slough off the dead cells to enhance
the penetration of your moisturizer. RF Macro Exfoliator removes 5 million dead skins cells in a matter of 5 minutes. Used once a week, this handheld, personal use exfoliation tool sweeps away dead skin cells leaving behind a smoother, healthier-looking and more luminous complexion. To reduce skin dryness, avoid frequent and long hot showers and baths. Try to keep your exposure to water less than 5 minutes per day and always apply a body moisturizer to damp skin. RF ESSENTIALS Daily Body Moisturizer tackles dry, flaky skin in a whole new way. It features RF-Dcell technology to calm frenzied cells, normalize the rate of cell maturation and help make skin function more efficiently. Chapped lips is always the first sign that winter is upon us. Applying and reapplying lip balm is not the solution for keeping your “kisser” smooth and soft. Use a lip exfoliator at night to remove dead skin cells and follow with a specially formulated lip moisturizer. Whatever you do, don’t lick your lips! It will worsen chapping
in the long run. RF Enhancements Lip Micro-dermabrasion removes dead skin cells and exfoliates flaky lip tissues in just a few swipes. Just because the sun isn’t shining doesn’t mean you aren’t getting any harmful UV radiation. Remember when it comes to your skin, everyday is SUNday. Apply Sunscreen daily to all exposed parts. All RF regimens include an FDA approved sunscreen to keep you protected all day. Happy Holidays and why not give the Gift of Great Skin! Kellie Salter is an Independent Consultant with Rodan + Fields Dermatologists, the creators of Proactiv® Solutions. Her column is found exclusively in Active Lifestyles Magazine sharing skincare tips and strategies to provide you with healthy, vibrant and glowing skin. website: kelsalter.myrandf.com Call Kellie: 314-974-4040

All Paws Rescue, Inc. is an all volunteer non-profit animal rescue organization based in St. Charles County, Missouri. Our mission is to rescue homeless, abused and neglected dogs and cats, provide any necessary medical care or behavioral help they need, and then place them into loving permanent homes. All Paws is made up entirely of foster homes, which allows us to better evaluate each animal and place them in homes that are well-suited to their needs and the needs of their future owners. All animals are spayed/neutered, vaccinated, heartworm tested (dogs) or FIV/FeLV tested (cats), and microchipped before being placed for adoption. In addition to our adoption program, All Paws also offers multiple services to our community, including low-cost spay/neuter services and placement assistance for owners needing to re-home their pets. website www.allpawsrescue.info

Lady Lacy
Chica
Chica is a fun and feisty Pomeranian girl who is full of Pomeranian energy. She is 6 years old and around 15 pounds. Chica loves to play with toys, go on walks, hang out in the backyard, and get lots of attention from you! Chica has a big personality and can be pushy with other dogs. Chica would do best as an only dog or with a medium or large dog that would be tolerant of her. At first she liked to chase the cats in her foster home but now she is doing much better. She would do best with an active person or family. She can play rough and be mouthy so would be best with children 10 and older. Chica is housebroken. We believe she has a grain allergy so she needs to eat grain-free food. Like many Pomeranians, Chica has a tendency to be vocal. Chica needs a fenced backyard where she can run and burn off her energy. She loves to be petted and will happily hop in your lap to cuddle and give kisses. She would love to curl up next to you in bed at night. Chica is a great girl who is looking for her perfect fit.
Lady Lacy (La La) is a sweet, loving, playful 8 year old Cavalier King Charles Spaniel Mix, who has recently lost her only owner. She gets along well with other dogs and doesn’t seem to mind cats. La La loves to play with toys, going for rides, and she walks on the leash well. She loves to cuddle and to be held like a (little) lap dog. She is crate trained but she sleeps in bed with me and my other dogs and claims her portion of the bed (she likes the head of the bed with a pillow). As she is a spaniel mix she will need and to have her ears cleaned and to be regularly groomed. The first week or so in a new home can be very trying and confusing for anyone, La La’s way of dealing with the anxiety of this is to counter/table surf as she looks for treats. Once settled Lady Lacy is the most loving addition to your family that you and your family could ever ask for. Come meet your new family member.
Mira
Nutmeg
Mira is an 8 month old Border Collie mix. She is spayed and current on shots. She has some neurological issues which cause her to be wobbly and shake at times. She was diagnosed with Hydrocephalus and some hearing and possibly vision problems. She has been seen by a neurologist and will have these symptoms throughout her life and needs to be on meds. She loves to play with the other dogs and has a fun personality. She will probably not have a long life span. but she deserves some one to love as she has a lot to give. Let us know if you are interested in learning more about Mira!
Nutmeg is a 5 year old female chihuahua that can be energetic but also loves to snuggle. She loves to get and receive lots of kisses. She can be around other dogs but doesn’t like very active dogs. She is good with older kids but not sure with small children. She is crate trained (sleeps there all night) and will not go potty in it. She is doing good with her house training (about 80% going outside) but she will go on a puppy pad if one is put out for her. With a little patience she will be 100% in no time.
TRAINING IS THE KEY TO A HAPPY AND HEALTHY PET-OWNER RELATIONSHIP by Dr. Sarah Frei DVM
As a veterinary professional, you might expect me to start spouting advice on a plethora of medical conditions... Well, not today! Working in a shelter environment has taught me that one of the number one reasons people surrender their beloved pets to animal shelters is for behavioral reasons. Frequently, behavioral problems trump any sort of medical diagnosis as the most frustrating
aspect of pet ownership. I’d like to provide a few tips that are vital but often overlooked when it comes to training your pet: 1. NILF- Nothing In Life is Free. Ask yourself... How much do you value items that you didn’t have to work for? By adhering to the mantra that “nothing in life is free” you reinforce that every valued resource in your pet’s life comes at a price. Dinner time? You must lay down and stay before you receive your meal. Exiting a door? You must sit and wait for me to pass before you can follow. Practicing this ritual solidifies your role as pack leader, leading to a more well adjusted canine companion. 2. Crate training- A well-adjusted hound has a special place... A “den” of sorts, that they may retreat to. Acclimating your dog to a kennel is a multi-step process that cannot be rushed. Never using the crate as punishment and always wait until your pet is quiet and focused before releasing them from the crate. Teaching your dog that the
15 ∙ ACTIVE LIFESTYLES MAGAZINE ∙ DECEMBER 2015 ∙ www.activelifestylesmag.com
crate is a safe place for relaxation will lead to fewer destructive behaviors. For a more extensive tutorial, please visit: www.pbrc.net/training_crate.html 3. Proper leash walking- Nothing is more frustrating than a powerful pooch straining your wrist and shoulder by pulling! Don’t leave your best friend at home... Implement a few strategies to make a walk in the park truly a walk in the park! First, make sure your companion is wearing more than just a flimsy collar. An Easy-Walk harness or a Gentle Leader are designed to help you humanely and effectively guide your pet. An old-fashioned sixfoot lead is far superior to a retractable leash... Retractable leashes can allow your animal to stray too far or dangerously whip towards their face if dropped! Second, make sure you don’t depart home without a pocket full of delectable treats! A plastic baggie full of sliced hotdogs will soon teach your pet that right by your side is the place to be. I look forward to sharing more
information, stories, and adoptable pets with you in future editions of Active Lifestyles Magazine! Dr. Sarah Frei is Veterinarian for the City of St. Louis Animal Care and Control.
