Fresh, PLASTIC or Aluminum?

Happy Holidays St. Louis!

By Rick Dungey

Each holiday season, shoppers find themselves confronted with a choice: celebrate with a fresh, real tree, or one that is artificial plastic or aluminum. There are benefits for each, but what most people don’t realize is that the best choice has always been the traditional and natural choice - a Real Christmas Tree. Did you know that Real Christmas Trees are grown on farms just like any other agricultural crop like corn or apples? To ensure a constant supply, Christmas

Tree growers plant one to three new seedlings for every tree they harvest each year. There are many sizes, types and varieties of Real Christmas Trees available to consumers now-a-days, so educate yourself before you head out to the farm or your local retail lot. Many common Christmas Tree species are: balsam fir, Douglas-fir, Fraser fir, noble fir, Scotch pine, Virginia pine and white pine. The National Christmas Tree Association is the national ...

Hearth Room Café I recently met with Ann Ojile, owner of Hearth Room Café in Town and Country, MO. Ann is a most delightful and gracious woman and this feeling extends outward and is very evident in the ambience and service at Hearth Room Café. Ann opened her restaurant five years ago and this little gem has quickly become a favorite of many. The décor is warm and cozy, with richly painted walls and a chic style. The focal point in

the main dining room is the large fireplace which burns brightly in cooler weather. This is a great spot to linger over a meal, whether that’s breakfast, lunch or dinner. Hearth Room Café has become THE place to book a wedding or baby shower, birthday party or any other special occasion. There are two banquet rooms to choose from and they are both quite stylish and well furnished. Private events are easy to plan with the input of the staff and are always done with ...

Savannah and Charleston Savannah, Georgia and Charleston, South Carolina are two historical cities located in the southeastern United States. They beckon as a lover does, whispering their stories, begging for you to stroll their mysterious lanes and squares, unfurling their magic before your eyes and enchanting you at every corner. These cities captivate with their charm, architecture, cuisine, history and culture. One visit and you’ll long to return time after time, drinking in all of the rich sights and sounds that these cities so freely give. Charleston is the oldest city

in South Carolina and is located on Charleston Harbor, an inlet of the Atlantic Ocean which is formed by the joining of the Cooper and Ashley Rivers. Charleston was founded in 1670 and named Charles Town after King Charles 11 of England. The first settlers of Charles Town were mainly from England but there were also people who came from its Caribbean colony of Barbados and its Atlantic colony of Bermuda. They added a distinct flavor to the city as did the migration of the French, Irish, Scottish and Germans. These groups were joined by a large number of Sephardic Jews and by the beginning of the 19th century, Charles Towne was home to the largest and wealthiest Jewish community in North America, and it remained so until about 1830. The port became a dropping off point for Africans

captured and transferred to the American English colonies as slaves. By the mid-18th century, Charles Towne had become a great, bustling port and trade center and was one of the wealthiest cities of its time. During the American Revolution, Charles Towne was twice the target of British attacks. Continued on page 9

OVERCOMING OBESITY IN ST. LOUIS by Physician’s Choice Wellness - Becky Anderson

The city and growing community of St. Louis has several upgrades to be proud of as we are witnessing the revitalization of the Arch Grounds, the construction of Ballpark Village, completion of the new wing at the Art Museum, and the addition of Physician’s Choice Wellness to the community. With all the great city projects happening, the city’s biggest and best asset is and always will be its citizens. St. Louisans are the lifeblood of this great city yet they continue to battle a deadly disease, obesity. Around 34% of the St. Louis greater metro population is considered obese, and that number keeps growing. In 2008, obesity was listed as the number one cause of preventable deaths in America beating both tobacco and alcohol. Obesity leads to an array of other medical conditions that can be avoided or even

eliminated with weight loss. This is why Physician’s Choice Wellness is a new and welcomed member to the city. Physician’s Choice Wellness (PCW) is a medically monitored weight loss program that opened their doors this year in University City. Becky Anderson and St. Louis based developer Tom O’Donnell willingly accepts the task of reversing the trend in obesity. Becky Anderson, founder and president, started her first PCW clinic in 2008 in central Illinois. Mrs. Anderson started PCW after developing and implementing a number of highly successful weight loss management programs for various hospitals in central Illinois. After creating an award winning formula and program to weight loss management, Mrs. Anderson decided to take her formula to start her own clinic, and the awards kept amassing. In 2013, Physician’s Choice Wellness won the Outstanding Achievement Award and was nationally recognized as a Center of Excellence. This is a unique and effective weight loss management program

From all of us to you...

aimed at lowering a patient’s Body Mass Index (BMI) to a more reasonable and manageable number through a comprehensive three-phase program of reducing, adapting, and sustaining. There are three programs, and each patient will participate in one based on the patient’s needs, abilities and limitations. The PCW Healthcare Team will consult each other to devise an individualized program for each patient. PCW provides a comprehensive healthcare team that consists of registered dietitians, life coaches, personal trainers and physicians. The team works hand-in-hand with each patient to provide support, accountability and education to achieve a healthier lifestyle. Weekly meetings are held where clients meet with the PCW Healthcare Team for a clinic visit and educational session. It is through these meetings the clients learn long term principles to living a healthy life. The program is nonsurgical and does not use injections or hormones. PCW keeps the price low by working with insurance carriers to

cover certain program costs. After celebrating their 5th anniversary of providing a successful weight loss management program for the central Illinois community, Physician’s Choice Wellness chose St. Louis as the next community to educate and assist in weight loss and combating obesity. PCW is the only clinic of its kind in St. Louis that offers this modern trend in weight loss. Obesity is a medical disease that every city fights, and Physician’s Choice Wellness tackles the disease with a medically-monitored approach that is proven to be effective and successful in losing weight as well as maintaining a healthy weight. St. Louisans have a lot to look forward to in the future not just with the completion of all the new projects but in reaching and maintaining a healthier lifestyle. Physician’s Choice Wellness has only one goal; to get St. Louis on the fast track to becoming a healthier city one person at a time. See our ad below and on the back cover of this issue!

TAMING THE TRIO: STRESS, TENSION AND PAIN by Janet Houseman, LMT

It starts with a tightening of the shoulders, then the range of motion in the neck lessens and finally you wake up the next

morning with pain radiating from your ears down to your upper back. Clearly the body is telling the brain to pay attention, but most of us tolerate the pain and hope the discomfort will subside eventually with ice, heat and analgesics. A better solution would be to make an appointment with a professional massage therapist who is trained to recognize the trigger points of pain, knows how to release knots and soothe refferred pain. From the moment the client passes through the door of Creekside Massage, the LMT is assessing posture, range of motion, gait and she is planning the goals of the massage session. The clientʼs verbal communication is heard and addressed with specific techniques to release the muscle tension, remove toxins in the

harmony of mind, body and spirit. You can make an appointment online when it is convenient for you or call 636-220-8036. Donʼt forget to share the well-being with gift cards for friends, family or as a thank-you to anyone who would appreciate a chance to relax!

WINTERIZE YOUR SKIN by Andrea Sims - Rodan & Fields

With winter upon us, I decided to provide a few quick tips to Winterize Your Skin. Just like you winterize your home by switching screen doors with storm doors and replacing weather-stripping, you need to protect your skin from the elements, too. Here’s how to winterize your skin so it will stay looking great as the cold chill sets in. As the air gets cooler and drier, hydrate from the outside in by adding an additional heavier moisturizer to your daily skincare routine. Overnight Restorative Cream is an excellent option. In addition to modifying your skincare regimen, it is crucial to take care of yourself from within. Let’s start by drinking plenty of water! This should be on the top of your ‘to-do’ list year round, however in the dry air of fall & winter it is critical! Focus on eating wholesome and well balanced meals. Staying hydrated will help keep your skin looking beautiful. Try a humidifier in your bedroom while you sleep. The additional moisture it provides is invaluable

and will not only improve the tone and texture of your skin, it also decreases sinus sensitivity and keeps hair and nails hydrated too! While it’s important to cleanse your hands frequently during cold and flu season, unless you moisturize after every wash, you’ll experience dry, cracked skin and brittle nails. Rodan + Fields REDEFINE Brightening Hand Treatment relieves the discomfort associated with hand washing and the drying effects of the environment. This nongreasy treatment helps retain skin’s natural moisturizing factors to effectively improve elasticity and resiliency, while skin brighteners visibly even skin tone and improve the appearance of hands. Use a gentle exfoliator from head to toe to slough off the dead cells to enhance the penetration of your moisturizer. RF Macro Exfoliator removes 5 million dead skins cells in a matter of 5 minutes. Used once a week, this hand-held, personal use exfoliation tool sweeps away dead skin cells leaving behind a smoother, healthier-looking and more luminous complexion. To reduce skin dryness, avoid frequent and long hot showers and baths. Try to keep your exposure to water less than 5 minutes per day and always apply a body moisturizer to damp skin. RF ESSENTIALS Daily Body Moisturizer tackles dry, flaky skin in a whole new way. It features RF-Dcell technology to calm frenzied cells, normalize the rate of cell maturation and help

make skin function more efficiently. Chapped lips is always the first sign that winter is upon us. Applying and reapplying lip balm is not the solution for keeping your “kisser” smooth and soft. Use a lip exfoliator at night to remove dead skin cells and follow with a specially formulated lip moisturizer. Whatever you do, don’t lick your lips! It will worsen chapping in the long run. RF Enhancements Lip Micro-dermabrasion removes dead skin cells and exfoliates flaky lip tissues in just a few swipes. Just because the sun isn’t shining doesn’t mean you aren’t getting any harmful UV radiation. Remember when it comes to your

Nutrician Advice Coming In January!

KEEP YOUR NEW YEAR’S FITNESS RESOLUTIONS by Christi Gleason, MS, MBA, CPT, RYT

If you’re like most Americans, New Year’s Day represents a time for change-- becoming fit, eating healthily, and living the disciplined lifestyle you realize is necessary for your longevity. Then reality kicks in. January 2nd arrives and all plans go south. Granted, January 2nd may be an exaggeration, but in truth, change is hard. Since the term “working out” itself bluntly acknowledges the work involved, it is, naturally, a hard goal to achieve. Given the intensity of the typical modern work day, Americans hardly want to fill their free time by taking on more work. Quitting makes total sense, so instead

let’s aim for success in the new year. Here are some ideas for a successful 2014: 1) Accept that working out is hard at first, especially the first few weeks. It might feel awful at first, and yes, you’ll be sore. Avoid doing too much too soon. Resolve to move regularly and quit being hard on yourself! Move, stay positive, and be gentle. 2) Avoid exercising so intensely that you hate it. Find a comfortable pace and start there. Stop comparing yourself to others. Erase thoughts of what you could do ten years ago, and quit worrying about where you “should” be. The present moment is what’s relevant.

    

Do what you can and be proud that you’re doing it. Misery is not the goal, nor will it get you far. 3) Pick an activity that you enjoy doing. If just the idea of exercise turns you off, disguise it. If you enjoy shopping, walk briskly around your favorite shop-whether you’re at the mall or a hardware store. Did you dance as a kid? Enroll in an adult dance class. Why not find a sports league? Or arrange to hike with some friends? Exercising doesn’t mean you must join a gym. If thinking of a treadmill turns you off, then forget about using one 4) Give up the “all-or-nothing” mindset. If you sit all day, you don’t have to be at the gym for hours on end in order to see any progress. Every little bit helps. In fact, you may be avoiding weight GAIN if this is the case. Take ten minutes for yourself if that’s all you have. 5) Starving yourself is a bad idea! Exercising burns calories. Maintain your normal diet, and you’ll lose weight just by exercising alone. Avoid eating extra calories because you’re exercising or you may gain weight. Cut some calories for faster results, but be sure that your caloric intake is

above 1500 calories if you are a male or 1200 calories if you are a female. Otherwise, you will lose muscle, which ultimately leads you to retain fat. 6) Set goals for yourself and rewards. Set realistic, specific, and attainable goals. Track each day and note your challenges on days that goals are not met. Then tackle them wisely.

SMALL SPACES THAT LIVE LARGE by Marcia Moore, Interior Designer

Downsizing from the large family home to a smaller condo is becoming increasingly popular among all of us baby boomers. A concern I’ve heard from my clients is the fear that a smaller space won’t have the same warmth, or interest, or pizzazz or etc., etc., as their larger house had. I’m here to tell you this is absolutely not true! Small spaces can be very exciting, inspiring, cozy, warm and inviting, all without depleting your 401k. Since each room is smaller it doesn’t cost as much as the same room in a larger house. Even the easily expensive kitchen remodel costs less with less square footage. A couple of years ago I had the opportunity to work on a community service project sponsored by St Louis At Home magazine. We renovated the apartments used to house outof-town actors employed by The Repertory Theater of St Louis. These 1 bedroom, 500sf spaces were in dire need of remodeling, so we worked on every inch of space. We created functional, interesting spaces with as much storage as possible and have gotten rave reviews from the actors who love their new digs. After looking at these pictures of 500sf, just think what we could do with a 10001500sf condo! Let’s start with the kitchen. A small galley kitchen doesn’t provide much space for anything, but there are still lots of possibilities. No fuss cabinets and countertop keep the space from looking cluttered, while a creative glass tile backsplash adds a little WOW. The microwave is a convection oven/microwave combination which means there is

more room under the countertop for cabinets. The coffee pot sits

dining chairs can be pulled over for extra conversation seating. Vibrant

on an open shelf rather than taking up countertop space. A narrow butcher block table sitting against the wall adds more countertop space when needed, and a mirror with hooks can be used for coffee

colors and patterns in the art, rug and drapes liven up the look.

A small bathroom can get a big boost from a unique granite remnant. Paired with more neutral walls, tile and linens, plus an oversized piece of art on the cups or a hanging bread basket. The deep purple wall adds drama without making the space feel smaller. The deep purple wall unites the kitchen to the dining area and becomes an accent wall for the living room. A small desk is enough space for a laptop. The mirror visually expands the space and functions as a full length mirror. A glass top dining table could be changed out for a round table with leaves if you need extra space for entertaining. The same flooring throughout the apartment also adds to the spacious feeling. The living room and dining area are defined by adding a tall lattice room divider. It gives the illusion of 2 separate spaces without visually breaking up the room. You might think a sectional wouldn’t work in this small space but it actually makes the living area seem larger. It easily seats 5 people for TV viewing and the

There is enough space to get out of bed on each side – very cozy! On the opposite end of the room is space for a chair, dresser and welldesigned closet. One of the keys to creatively decorating a small space is to use fewer pieces, but larger pieces. One large piece of art on a wall is better than lots of smaller pieces. The large sectional works better than a couch and 2 chairs. It seems counterintuitive but fewer pieces keep the room from feeling cluttered.

So, don’t despair about downsizing! With a little creativity and the right pieces of furniture you may end up liking this cozy space even more than that big sprawling house. And way less house cleaning! All the best, Marcia Photos by: Matt Hughes

opposite wall, adds up to a bath with pizzazz! Last but not least is the bedroom where a queen bed holds center stage.

life by absorbing carbon dioxide and other gases and emitting fresh oxygen. Artificial trees are a petroleumbased product manufactured primarily in Chinese factories. The average family uses a fake tree for only six to nine years before throwing it away, where it will remain in a landfill for centuries after disposal. Christmas Trees are often grown on soil that does not support other crops. The farms that grow Christmas Trees stabilize the soil, protect water supplies and provide refuge for wildlife. Farm-grown trees are biodegradable, which means they can easily be reused or recycled for mulch or other purposes.

The polyvinyl chloride (PVC) used in most artificial trees has been boycotted by environmental and health groups. Swedish researchers found that Real Trees are five times more environmentally compatible than fake trees. American Forests, a world leader in tree planting for environmental restoration, has publicly endorsed the commercial growing and use of farm-grown Christmas Trees. Real Trees can be recycled in a number of ways, including mulch for parks and trails, in lakes and ponds for fish habitat, dune and coastline restoration efforts and as boiler fuel for factories. Assets for your retirement should be able to respond to any possible changes with ease. All it takes is a little training. If you’re changing jobs and have an existing retirement plan, such as a 401(k), you should already have a Summary Plan Description in your possession. This will describe your retirement plan and the options available to you, regarding your old (or, soon to be old) companies plan. You want to share this document with a financial professional

so the two of you can decide what option fits you best. Many companies have restrictions on what can and can’t be done with your retirement fund. As with most financial planning, a little education goes a long way and knowing the details of your plan will help make the transition a bit smoother. Generally, you’ll have three major options for your retirement fund when changing jobs. You can withdraw your investment savings and keep the money as a lump sum (sit), you can leave the money where it is (stay), or you can “roll over” your retirement savings into another retirement plan or an IRA. Each option has its pros and cons. Depending on your situation in life and in your career, you’ll want to consult a financial consultant and choose the option that makes you feel most comfortable. If you choose to withdraw your money in a lump sum from a previous employer’s retirement fund, you must pay taxes on the

money you withdraw. On top of those taxes, your employer is required to take a 20% withholding from your lump sum, and if you are under age 59 ½, you may also be forced to pay a 10% penalty tax. You may roll over the lump sum and avoid the penalty provided that you deposit the funds in an IRA or another employer plan within 60 days. You will have to make up the additional 20% withheld by your employer. The 20% withholding will be deducted from your reported income when your taxes are due. Leaving the money in your current plan is one option when changing jobs or companies. However, you must also be aware of any possible regulations and restrictions your old company has placed on your money in that retirement plan. If you choose to roll it over, you may have the option of rolling your assets into either an IRA, a Roth IRA or your new employer’s plan. However, to avoid paying taxes and penalties,

you should have these assets transferred directly to another IRA custodian. Once a Rollover has been put into a Roth, you cannot roll the Roth into another employee-sponsored retirement plan. These are just the basic options you may have when changing careers and retirement plans. Deciding what to do with your retirement savings when changing companies or careers is one of the most crucial decisions you make. It is important to consult your tax professional before taking a distribution. By working with a financial professional, they’ll make sure you’re aware of the many options available to you. And by being prepared in advance, you’ll know when it comes time to confront change, you’ll be ready. Continued from cover... Fort Sullivan was built to defend the harbour. In 1780 the British gained and remained in control of the city until 1782. After they departed, the city was renamed Charleston. The invention of the cotton gin in 1793 brought prosperity to South Carolina and cotton quickly became its hottest commodity. On December 20 of 1860, South Carolina seceded from the Union and suffered massive damage during those years. The war shattered the once prosperous city and brought in its place, poverty and hopelessness. Charleston began to prosper again in the 1970’s and today is a vibrant and captivating city known for its art, music, local food, and fashion. Here it easy to lose oneself in gumbo, fried oysters, shrimp and grits and lowcountry boils. Today the descendants of slaves weave intricate sweetgrass baskets, a traditional art form passed down for generations. During the plantation era, sweetgrass baskets were used in the fields for carrying crops and it was not unusual for plantation owners to sell the baskets for extra income. It is the oldest form of African artwork in the United States, and no trip to Charleston would be complete without a stop at a sweetgrass basket stand. One of Charleston’s most unique stops is at the Charleston Tea Plantation Located on beautiful Wadmalaw Island, just 20 miles

south of downtown Charleston, it is the only working tea plantation in the United States. The plantation uses the Camellia sinensis plant to produce a delicious black tea. The plantation packages American Classic Tea and sells six different flavors in tea bags or the loose tea form. The tea is harvested from May to October and the plantation offers tours through the farm and tasting center. Savannah, named for the Savannah River, is just a two hour drive from Charleston. Established in 1733, it was a strategic port during the American Revolution and the Civil War. Millions of tourists visit Savannah each year savoring its rich architecture and historic buildings. This is where you will find the birthplace of Juliette Gordon Low, founder of the Girl Scouts. Savannah consists of 22 park like squares in the historic district and each one retains its own charm and uniqueness. Here you can rest on park benches, surrounded by aged oak trees draped with Spanish moss. Take a moment to breathe in the scent of flowering plants and listen to the sound of water coming from decorative fountains. Savannah today is the fourth largest container ship port in North America and its bustling riverfront area is a delight to stroll. It is on the river front that the The Waving Girl statue is located.

Majestic live oak trees and spanish moss line Savannah’s historic streets The statue recalls a bittersweet story that intrigues both locals and visitors alike. The daughter of a sergeant stationed at Fort Pulaski, Florence lived in a cottage along the river near the entrance to the harbour. Life was lonely for Florence and she was always seen with her faithful Collie waving a handkerchief and welcoming incoming ships into Savannah. At nightfall, she would stand by with lantern in hand to greet the ships. She fell in love with a sailor who promised to come back and make her his wife. Florence waited, but to no avail, for the sailor never returned. She continued greeting every single ship that approached the harbour for forty four years and welcomed over 500,000 vessels into Savannah. Florence grew into a

Savannah legend and sculptor Felix De Weldon fixed her image in immortality. Florence was beloved by seamen for decades and her statue was delivered to the city free of charge, by ship, of course! In 1943 the SS Florence Martus, a Liberty Ship, was christened in her honor. The Waving Girl statue is just one of many delights that Savannah offers the traveler. DIRECTIONS Tours will be visiting both Charleston and Savannah in April of 2014. Won’t you come along and let the stories of these two captivating cities become a part of your story and life? EXPLORING MAJESTIC ALASKA by Anne Weibert

Anne Weibert, Vice President of DIRECTIONS Tours. I have been very fortunate to travel to many places throughout the world but when I’m asked my favorite destination , I don’t hesitate at all: It’s ALASKA! I love majestic landscapes and they just don’t get any bigger or more majestic than our 49th state. In a world of technology and instant media access, we ,as human beings ,need a place to retreat to and replenish our souls. We need to see and hear the ancient sound of glaciers calving into a cold sea. We need to see a mama grizzly bear and her sow digging up roots in Denali National Park. We need to see Bald eagles soaring past mountain tops and we need to see a humpback whale breach out of a calm and steady sea. We need to reconnect with the

primal, wild parts of our world and when we do, our own souls rejoice and we become replenished. It is a privilege to share this part of our world with others and I find myself accompanying groups to Alaska every May. It is such a beautiful month to journey here, as the mountaintops are still snow covered and all of the animals are waking up and exploring the beginnings of summer. It’s the start of the Alaska season at this time of year and the towns aren’t overrun with tourists like they will be in June, July and August. The weather in May is just perfect for exploration. I recommend that my travelers layer as we typically experience weather that ranges from the mid 50’s to near 80 degrees. In fact, it’s not unusual to walk through Juneau in late May dressed in shorts and a t-shirt. So, what do I like to do while in Alaska? The very first thing I do is breathe deeply. There is nothing that compares to fresh Alaskan air; it feels like you are breathing for the very first time in your life. In this case, it’s good to inhale! Exploring the local galleries and eateries is something I always look forward to. I never miss the opportunity to have a meal of fresh crab legs and lobster bisque at Tracy’s King Crab Shack ( a

discreetly hidden treasure in Juneau!) Exploring Creek Street in Ketchikan and touring Dolly’s Brothel is always a highlight as is taking in the wonderful, hip art at Coho Soho Art Gallery. I make time to walk the trails and neighborhoods and marvel at the precariously perched Cliffside homes accessed only by long,

carvers slowly create wondrous totem poles out of raw wood. I explore small galleries where the owners are happy to see their customers and take the time to make you feel welcome. I sit in a pub and enjoy an Alaskan White, a glorious local brew. I catch a ferry to Skagway and walk the wooden planked town where the

Cruising in Alaska’s Majestic Glacier Bay narrow wooden stairs. I wonder what it would be like to live here and climb those steps every day. Haines, Alaska is another port that I always look forward to visiting and and I revel in its early history. I like to see how the old Army Barracks are coming along every year, as people are treasuring them and renovating them into the handsome buildings that they deserve to be. Ambling through the Alaskan Indian Arts building I watch skilled Tlingit

gold rush began in 1897 and I think about how brave and daring those Klondikers must have been. I book passage on the White Pass narrow gauge railroad far into the wilds to Whitehorse, and feel joyous when I spot a black bear. Lighthearted is how Alaska makes me feel and that feeling always lasts a very long time. I’ll be going to Alaska again in May of 2014. Won’t you join me? email: annew@directionsllc.com web: www.hellodirections.com

great planning and good taste. If ever you happen to be in the West County area, do yourself a favor and get spoiled by stopping in for a delicious, home cooked meal at Hearth Room Café! Both your stomach and your checkbook will thank you!

Hearth Room. What were they? Ann: In the 1980’s I had a sports bar and they were really all the rage back then. Next, I purchased a franchise and that was an experience. My third restaurant was a small place in the food court at South County Mall.

ANNE: Anne Weibert Cuisine Editor ANN: Anne Ojile Owner of Hearth Room Café

Anne: Since you’ve been in the industry so long, I’m wondering if you grew up in this business. Ann: I did not…I’m the only oddball in my family! The rest of them all went in a more traditional direction.

Anne: Tell me a bit about your restaurant, Hearth Room Café. Ann: We’ve been opened five years in September and this is my fourth endeavor in the restaurant business and basically, I’ve been involved in this business for four decades. The Hearth Room is the culmination of what I’ve learned from the other restaurants. We started out with just breakfasts and lunches, because I preferred to not work nights. Then it grew into private events in the evenings. Our customers wanted us to open for dinner, so we took on opening another event space and now we’re open for dinner four nights a week, Wednesday through Saturday. Anne: You mentioned owning several restaurants prior to

Anne: I can see how busy you are, even this late in the afternoon. How many hours do you devote a week to the restaurant? Ann: I would say no less than 60-70 hours a week. Anne: That’s a full schedule. Are you open 7 days a week? Ann: I am. We serve breakfast seven days a week starting at 7:00 a.m. and our weekends are really busy. Anne: You’ve become a fixture in St. Louis, particularly in the West County area. It’s beautiful in here and we’ve actually brought a group for lunch in your lovely banquet room. Ann: You were in the large banquet room with your group and we’re

sitting in the smaller private banquet room which accommodates 2025 people. The larger room holds 50 or so. Every weekend we host between 2-6 bridal and baby showers. For evening events we have people book birthday parties, anniversaries, rehearsal dinners and business functions. For instance, in December we have a group from Prudential in for a dinner party. We also have many groups, like your tour, book luncheons. Anne: What types of dishes are you known for and what is your most popular dish? Ann: I think that the reason we’re so well known is that we serve high quality food made from scratch. People love our French toast on the breakfast menu as it’s really unique and delicious. Our Eggs Benedict is fantastic and so many people come here just for that. We tend to serve many salads for lunch and we offer many signature sandwiches that we’ve created here and you won’t find anywhere else. Anne: The culinary world has traditionally been male dominated, but that is changing. Have you found certain challenges because you are a female restaurant owner? Ann: When I thought I was going to retire, I decided that I would go to culinary school. So, I went to Forest Park. It’s interesting because I have seen things change. A lot more women are going into the pastry part of it, the baking part, and not so much the savory side. I think that when I’m looking for help, people may hear Hearth Room Café and think “it’s too girly” or think “oh, I’m a chef and I won’t be able to cook there,” but we have completely elegant events and dinner entrees that give everybody the

opportunity to use their creativity. So, it’s everything from flipping eggs to roasting beef tenderloin. Anne: What advice would you give to someone who is considering opening a restaurant? Ann: Don’t open a restaurant if you love cooking! First and foremost, you have to be a business person and if you think you can open a restaurant just because you love to bake cakes or whatever, then hire a business manager. I’m very fortunate that my husband has been in business for many decades so I have had his advice and support for all these years. He has been my teacher and mentor. My oldest daughter is a marketing major so I have marketing, business and sales people around me all of the time. Anne: Do you have a mantra, or some words that you live by, that inspires you? Ann: I believe very much in thinking and speaking positively because I feel that whatever you speak and think comes back to you. I have 5 Pillars of Success that I try to consider before I make any decision…Quality, Customer Service, Consistency, Atmosphere and Value. And I question myself…is this the quality that they deserve? Are they receiving excellent service? Consistency is the most important thing to me and I believe it will either make you or break you. I think people deserve to go out and enjoy a great meal and not pay a ridiculous amount of money to do that. Anne: Did you grow up in St. Louis? Ann: I am a St. Louisan. Anne: Well, now you know my next question; where did you go to high school? Ann: Webster Groves, Baby! 16 and Webster!

A SPECIAL FLIGHT OF HONOR by Annemarie Schumacher

Greater St. Louis Honor Flight, whose mission it is to safely transport World War II veterans to see the National World War II Memorial in Washington, D.C., partnered with Veterans Care Coordination (VCC) to host a unique honor flight, dedicated specifically to veterans of the Korean War. On November 12, the first flight whose participants consist solely of Korean War veterans and their chaperones departed from Lambert St. Louis International Airport. The group visited Arlington Cemetery (including observing a wreath laying ceremony), Iwo Jima Marine Memorial, Korean War Veterans Memorial, Lincoln Memorial, Vietnam Veterans Memorial and the World War II Memorial. Employees of Veterans Care Coordination greeted flight participants and distributed gift bags containing a variety of items to commemorate the flight, as well as assisted them throughout the trip. Welcome

bags contained blankets and gloves, tissues, and snacks, including Tootsie Rolls wrapped in American flag paper. Tootsie Rolls have been embraced by Korean Veterans as assisting them with saving their lives. During the Battle of Chosin Reservoir in 1950, mortar sections under the United States Marine Corps started to run out of mortar rounds. The radiomen of these sections started requesting more rounds. There were too many nearby enemy anti-air emplacements however, and the risk that they might lose any airlifted supplies was too great, so they had to wait. After two days of waiting, all the mortar sections ran out of rounds. At this point the risk was taken and supplies were dropped anyway. When the troops found the crates of mortar rounds, they found the crates were instead filled with Tootsie Rolls. The cause of this error was that a supply specialist did not know that the codename for mortar

A recent Honor Flight arrives in Washington. rounds was “Tootsie Rolls,” and instead ordered hundreds of crates of Tootsie Roll candies instead of mortar rounds. In addition, VCC employee Dawn Dunn sung “God Bless America” to the crowd, which included flight participants, their family members and friends, Honor Flight volunteers, and current members of the armed services. The local St. Charles county community, where VCC is headquartered, pitched in to help make this flight memorable. The

Holt High School student council assembled the gift bags the veterans received. Students at Peine Ridge Elementary School created a special, personalized placed in the gift bags to further enhance the celebration of these American heroes. GOODNIGHT ST. LOUIS

The Must-Have Book for Gateway City Lovers of All Ages! Have you ever seen downtown St. Louis from the top of the Arch? Played in the fountains at Citygarden? Heard the lions roar at the Saint Louis Zoo? Get ready for a whimsical journey with Goodnight St. Louis, an exploration of the region’s most popular attractions, iconic landmarks, historical neighborhoods, and family-friendly locations. Goodnight St. Louis has sold more than 11,000 copies since its August 1 release date and has consistently ranked among the top 10 best-selling books on Publisher’s Weekly’s Children’s/Young Adult Literature listing. It is available in more than 70 retail outlets throughout St. Louis City, and St. Louis, St. Charles, and Jefferson counties. Recently reviewed by the respected Clarion Review, Goodnight St. Louis received 4 out of 5 stars, an outstanding appraisal for first-time authors June Herman and Julie Dubray, and illustrator Karen Heyse. According to critic Catherine Thureson, “The book is wonderful for children who live

in St. Louis or for families who visit the city and want a souvenir to take home. Both authors and illustrator have done a magnificent job of capturing some of the character and spirit of St. Louis.” However, Goodnight St. Louis is more than a children’s book. “Kids of all ages have fallen in love with Goodnight St. Louis,” says Herman. “We like to say that the books appeals to ‘kids 8-80’ who love the St. Louis region. We are finding that older adults are gifting the book not only to grandchildren, but also to friends both in and out of town who have very fond memories of growing up a St. Louisan.” Dubray adds that the book has found friends and fans not only in the United States, but also around the world. “We’ve heard from many Goodnight fans who’ve told us they’ve sent the book to friends in a variety of countries including, England, Cuba, China (Hong Kong), Denmark and Japan to name a few. It’s the perfect gift to send to friends in other countries – to entice them to visit St. Louis.” Asked why they chose to write the book both authors quickly

volunteered, “Because we love St. Louis!” Dubray is a St. Louis native with very deep roots in the community. Herman and Heyse are St. Louis transplants having grown up in New Jersey and Chicago, respectively. Herman has lived in St. Louis for nearly 25 years, while Heyse has called St. Louis home for more than 40. Several libraries have added the book to their collections,

including St. Louis City, St. Louis County, Kirkwood and Webster Groves public libraries and Webster University Library. Goodnight St. Louis is published by Skip to My Lou, LLC, and can be found at many St. Louis retailers. You may also order online and find more information at www.goodnightstlouis.com

Neighborhood Business Spotlight Trinkets Tea & Me in Historic Downtown Kirkwood

Trinkets Tea & Me is a local tea shop in quaint Downtown Kirkwood. The shop offers nearly 80 flavors of premium loose leaf teas. However, customers describe it as a modern version of

a “General Store” since a variety of other natural items including a “Zumbar” bath salt bar, goat’s milk soaps, and natural lotions are also available at the store. “Trinkets” in the business name refers to unique jewelry such a teapot necklaces, earrings and unique infusers and tea accessories. The “& Me” in the name is for Tina McDonnell, the owner, who serenades the customers. She is known as The “Singing Tea Lady of Kirkwood.” Tina and her husband Kevin have an extensive healthcare background which they



have utilized in their business. Tina was introduced to natural teas grown on her father’s land in Cuba, Missouri. Tina is currently a research nurse at Shriners Hospital in Frontenac and points out the need for everyone to find a healthy alterative to many drinks which can be detrimental to our health and bone development. Her husband Kevin McDonnell, PhD worked as a Psychologist in State Hospitals in Missouri and before retirement helped develop and managed a dual diagnosed program for the Developmentally Disabled in Farmington, Missouri.

They readily discuss the various health benefits of all of the different varieties of teas, salt lamps, local honey, and other items. They even jokingly say that their Gelato “from the Hill” is both better tasting and healthier than eating ice cream. Kevin and Tina say, “Come in, sample teas and enjoy indoor and outdoor sipping, singing, and free Wi-Fi at Trinkets Tea and Me”. Trinkets Tea & Me is located at at 217 S. Kirkwood Road in Downtown Kirkwood. (314) 712-9321

RELIEVING YOUR PET’S ARTHRITIS PAIN THROUGH NEW LASER TREATMENTS by David D. Roberts, DVM, DABVP

One of the hardest realities to face as a pet owner is the aging process in your pet and often as not this includes the onset of arthritis and its symptoms. In our practice we see a wide range of arthritic conditions in our patients including hips, lower back, shoulders, elbows, and knees. And while we normally think of diseases such as hip dysplasia in dogs, cats are prone to arthritic changes as well, typically in the spine and shoulders. How do you know your pet is becoming arthritic? The symptoms are typically a reluctance to walk, run, climb stairs or jump, stiffness, limping, difficulty rising after lying down, lagging behind on walks,

reluctance or inability to stand on tile floors. Over the last 20 years, treatment of arthritis in pets has mainly centered on injectable glucosamine such as Adequan and Pentosan which replaces lost cartilage in canine patients or Non-steroidal Anti-Inflammatory (NSAIDS) medications that reduce inflammation in the affected joint thereby reducing pain and discomfort. These are useful and important tools in the battle to prolong a pet’s mobility and comfort. But by far the most exciting trend in the treatment of osteoarthritis has to be the Class IV Therapeutic Laser. Laser Therapy is a noninvasive treatment that enhances the body’s ability to heal itself. By stimulating the natural functions of converting oxygen in the blood into cellular energy, transporting nutrients, and removing waste products such as carbon dioxide and lactic acid, the treatment provides significant healing without any pain or drugs. Once a pet has been positively diagnosed with osteoarthritis, they start with a minimum of 6 initial treatments within a three week

! e M t p o d A BarclaY

period followed by a maintenance regimen. Each laser treatment is calibrated for the size of the pet, the area of the body, even hair color is taken into account. The laser is quiet and generates a little bit of warmth to the skin during the treatment which lasts between 3 and 10 minutes. All in all, it’s a very pleasant experience for the pet. We have been using our Therapeutic Laser over the last few months to treat arthritic pets with a great deal of success. For example, Cruiser, a 12 year old Bouvier des Flandres has arthritic hips. After 6 treatments he is

jumping for his food at mealtime again and jumping into bed, something he hasn’t done for many months. You can watch a series of short YouTubes on our website if you would like to see what a Therapeutic Laser session looks like. Just visit our website and go to the Pet Tips page www. manchesterwestvet.com Therapeutic Laser; it’s the wave of the future! David D. Roberts, DVM, DABVP is board certified in canine and feline practice. He is the owner of Manchester West Veterinary Hospital in Ellisville MO. 636‐458‐9010

“Caring For Your Pet As If It Were Our Own”

All Paws Rescue, Inc. is an all volunteer non-profit animal rescue organization based in St. Charles County, Missouri. Our mission is to rescue homeless, abused and neglected dogs and cats, provide any necessary medical care or behavioral help they need, and then place them into loving permanent homes. All Paws is made up entirely of foster homes, which allows us to better evaluate each animal and place them in homes that are well-suited to their needs and the needs of their future owners. All animals are spayed/neutered, vaccinated, heartworm tested (dogs) or FIV/FeLV tested (cats), and microchipped before being placed for adoption. In addition to our adoption program, All Paws also offers multiple services to our community, including low-cost spay/neuter services and placement assistance for owners needing to re-home their pets. website www.allpawsrescue.info

Barclay is approximately two to three years old. He is very sweet and generally quiet. Barclay is a special needs cat in that he has some food allergies and should stay on specific foods. He is current on shots, Feline Leukemia/FIV negative, microchipped, altered, and has had a flea preventative applied. Barclay is almost always some where close. He does not like being picked up, but he likes being petted and he is incredibly soft and very pretty to look at. Call ALL PAWS at 636-288-2999

ChulA

Chula is the friendliest little dog, and has never met a stranger! First chance she gets she will be in your lap just begging for a belly rub. Chula is great with other dogs and is also fine with cats. She is house-trained and very well behaved. Chula is seven years old and weighs nine pounds. She was born with microopthalmia in her left eye, which just means that eye is smaller than her right eye. She does not appear to have any vision problems. She is great on a leash and rides well in the car. If you’re looking for an affectionate, well-trained dog, Chula may just be a perfect fit! She is spayed, microchipped and current on shots. Call ALL PAWS at 636-288-2999

MoXie

Moxie is a very small cat, weighing only five pounds at nine months old. She is extremely sweet and loving with people, but doesn’t much care for other cats! Moxie lost one of her eyes due to an injury, but she doesn’t let that slow her down. She loves to play with toys, and her favorite thing is to curl up on your lap. Moxie needs a home where she is the only cat. She may be fine with a calm dog if the dog leaves her alone. She has excellent house manners and always uses the litterbox. Call ALL PAWS at 636-288-2999
