Find Your Market Summer is here and so are the fresh fruits and vegetables! St. Louis has a plethora of community farmer markets selling regional produce, arts and crafts. I have heard it said, that St. Louis has more farmers markets in the metro area than any other city in the country! St. Louis is also home to the oldest farmers market west of the Mississippi in the Soulard neighborhood. Soulard Market is the city’s largest farmers market

filled with over 100 vendors that include farmers, produce vendors, spice shops, meat shops, florist shops, food and more. Musicians and street performers line the streets around the market and several times a year the market also features art and music fairs. Many make it a Saturday morning ritual to enjoy the atmosphere. In GREENSPACE this month, we have compiled some of the regions largest and most visited farmers markets.

Medicaid F.A.Q’s This month, let’s explore a health benefit that many don’t know much about - Medicaid. Here are some of the most Frequently Asked Questions about the program. What is Medicaid? Medicaid is a benefits program which is primarily funded by the federal government and administered by each state. Sometimes the rules can vary from state to state. Why Seek Advice for Medicaid? As life expectancies and long term

care costs continue to rise, the challenge quickly becomes how to pay for these services. Many people cannot afford to pay $6,000 per month or more for the cost of a nursing home, and those who can pay for a while may find their life savings wiped out in a matter of months, rather than years. Fortunately, the Medicaid Program is there to help. In fact, in our lifetime, Medicaid has become the long term care insurance of the middle class. But the eligibility...

Yellowstone National Park Visiting Yellowstone National Park is a feast for all senses! Every year I have the pleasure of traveling to Yellowstone on tours and personal journeys, and everytime is a new adventure! Yellowstone National Park was America’s first National Park, established in 1872 by pioneer Ferdinand Vandiveer Hayden. Located along the upper Rocky Mountain range in the northwest corner of Wyoming, Yellowstone is one of America’s most remote National Parks. Surrounded by dense forest and mountain ranges, beautiful lakes, canyons, rivers and mountain ranges and features
some of the world’s most dynamic natural features. The park was the first of its kind in our country, and is known for its wildlife and geothermal features. More than two million acres, or 3,000 square miles, stretch over the surface area that is known as Yellowstone. The park is so diverse and large that the park is literally divided into many climate and natural zones. The most famous area is known as the Yellowstone Caldera. Half of the world’s geothermal features are in this area of Yellowstone. Fueled by an ongoing underground volcano, lava flows and rocks from volcanic eruptions cover most of the land area of Yellowstone. It is one of the largest remaining ecosystems on our planet. The caldera area features some of the most impressive geysers and hot springs in the park.

The most famous geyser in the park, and perhaps in the world, is Old Faithful Geyser. Although not the largest or most powerful geyser in the park, Old Faithful is just that... “faithful” and dependable. . UPCOMING MAY EVENTS AND HAPPENINGS
Each Summer, however, does bring on St. Louis heat and humidity. Remember to check in with your neighbors and elderly and make sure they are staying cool. Don’t leave pets in vehicles or outdoors without shade and water - if you see an animal in need, contact the police department at once. Make sure you watch the kids at the pools, rivers, and lakes too. Don’t let them or yourself be the next victim of drowning.

ST LOUIS URBAN GARDENING SYMPOSIUM by Mary Lou Green, St. Louis Brightside
ST. LOUIS – Every gardener knows that gardening is hard work and most are always on the lookout for new tips and tricks to make their gardening life a little easier? In the case of urban gardening, or growing plants in an urban landscape, there are environmental factors unique to urban spaces that can either hinder or help your garden. Successful city gardens work with their urban features, such as buildings, sidewalks, soil conditions, overhead wires, underground utilities, storm water systems, etc., rather than against
them. Learn how to make these urban elements work for you at the St. Louis Urban Gardening Symposium on Saturday, June 21, 2014 at Brightside St. Louis’ Demonstration Garden located at 4646 Shenandoah Avenue. The symposium will feature a series of 25-minute workshops led by experts in their respective fields. Participants will choose from a variety of topics including: Butterfly Gardening; Insects & Disease; Lawn & Tree Issues; Native Plants; Neighbors Naturescaping; Plant Care & Maintenance; Plant
Establishment; Plant Selection; Pruning Trees & Shrubs; and Rain Gardening. The purpose of the symposium is to give citizens of all gardening skill levels the knowledge they need to successfully cultivate their urban gardens at home or in their community. Interested individuals may register online at tinyurl.c om/gardenurban or call 314-400-2115. A fee of $10 per person includes participation in up to five workshops and a Q&A session. The fee will be waived for St. Louis city residents who participate in
the Neighbors Naturescaping workshop. Brightside’s Neighbors Naturescaping program enables groups to apply for up to $1,500 in native plant material and tools to establish or enhance a community garden in their St. Louis city neighborhood. For more information about the symposium, Neighbors Naturescaping or Brightside’s Demonstration Garden, please visit Brightside at www.brightsidestl.org or call at 314-772-4646.

THE BEST WRINKLE IS THE ONE YOU NEVER GET!
A
by Andrea Sims, Rodan & Fields Consultant
lthough aging is inevitable, much of what we consider undesirable is more within our control than people realize. When it comes to the aging face, preventing wrinkles is far easier, less painful, and a lot cheaper than correction. Today’s options for treating wrinkles are numerous and growing, from topical creams and lotions to dermatological procedures such as laser skin resurfacing, Botox, fillers, and finally, plastic surgery. Characterizing a Wrinkle It starts with first assessing the underlying cause. Is it sleep crease or a line of expression? Was it caused by the sun or smoking? I’ll be sharing the insights of Doctors Katy Rodan and Kathy Fields as they explain what each type of wrinkle is and what works to address it. Fine (superficial) wrinkles What They Are: Typically caused by sun damage and smoking, both of which accelerate the degeneration of collagen and elastin fibers, these lines are superficial in nature and extend only to the upper dermis. The little lines around the mouth that cause lipstick to bleed are the best example of superficial wrinkles. What works: Treatments directed at fixing superficial wrinkles must
target the upper most layers of the dermis. Topical treatment is the simplest approach for treating these fine wrinkles and the best place to start preventing new ones from forming, anti-aging peptides are a key. Rodan + Fields Redefine Night Renewing Serum contain peptides and retinol to stimulate collagen and elastin production, in combination with the Redefine regimen to firm and tone you complextion. Deep Wrinkles What They Are: Caused by degradation of the structural components of the skin, including elastin, collagen, and fat, deep wrinkles extend through the upper dermis into the middermis and lower dermis. The loss of fat cells beneath the wrinkle coupled with lax connective tissue above it means wrinkling and sagging eventually go hand in hand. A droopy mouth is a perfect example. What Works: Deep wrinkles require fillers that are designed to replace the volume that has been lost. Restylane is a volumizing filler that is effective for lessening the “parentheses” formed by deep nasolabial folds. As seen on The Today Show as a “Must Have” for anti-aging, Rodan + Fields
AMP MD roller in conjunction with the patent pending Night Renewing Serum addresses both the upper and lower dermis. Dynamic Wrinkles What They Are: A dynamic wrinkle is caused by muscle movement. The forehead frown lines, those two parallel creases making the number eleven between your eyebrows, result from the repetitive contraction of three muscles, two corrugaters and one procerus, tugging against the skin above and eventually engraving wrinkles. What Works: Botox inhibits muscle activity, allowing a relaxation of the skin and a disappearance of the wrinkle. Erasing these creases make you look happier and more relaxed and often changes the way people respond to you. Static Wrinkles What They Are: In contrast to wrinkles seen when muscles contract, static wrinkles are evident when the facial muscles are at rest. The most distressing static wrinkles tend to be those that occur where the lower area of the eye socket meets the top of the cheekbone, sometimes known as “tear troughs”. Static wrinkles are the most difficult, but when they are correctly addressed,
the improvement in appearance can be quite impressive. Rodan +Fields Redefine Multi-Function Eye Cream addresses the lines around the eyes, reduces puffiness and dark circle. What Works: Static wrinkles require fillers to replace lost volume. Microdermabrasion procedures may also help to build collagen because the pull of the vacuum on the skin may stimulate collagen growth. The Macro Exfoliator by Rodan + Fields removes and exfoliates 5 million dead skin cells in 5 min. Skin, it’s a beautiful thing. Wear it well! GRIEF, LOSS AND THE EMPATHETIC TOUCH by Janet Housman, LMT
When
the loss of a family member, friend or pet leaves you with an empty space and waves of grief wash over you an empathic touch can help to bring moments of peace and clarity. At Creekside Massage a person can feel safe and cared for when suffering from the loss of a loved one. We know that the circle of friends and associates gets smaller as divorce, life altering events, and the passing of companions occurs in the mature years. Consider getting a massage when you need to pause and process loss, disappointment, or sorrow because the benefits of massage are more than just physical and extend beyond the release of tight muscles or painful spasms. At times of acute grief, a trained therapist provides empathetic touch without judgement, advice or criticism. When my family member passed away after a long illness, my heart felt broken. Although it still worked and delivered fresh blood and oxygen to the needed organs muscles etc, it felt fractured, adrift
and not at all secure. I thought back to times when I heard others talk about being “brokenhearted” and understood that grief was taking up residence in my chest. The human body does hold the strong emotions of grief, sorrow, and loss just as it vibrates with joy in time of happiness and contentment. Massage for acute or long-standing grief allows a person to jettison the tension and restore security and body confidence. At some point during the session, the client may experience an emotional release that may include talking, sobbing, crying, or recollection of a hurtful memory. It is not necessary to apologize or make an excuse for the outburst. An emotional release can happen anytime in a session even if the loss was in the distant past. The release can actually provide a sensation of tranquility as the sorrow ebbs away with the soreness, pain and tension in the shoulders, back or neck. A grieving client seeking release brings to the massage relentless anxiety or deep

emotional pain, but he or she leaves the session with a sense of ease. We help you to be gentle with yourself and give you a place to know that grief will subside. Assisting in the unbinding of heavy lethargy or pent up tension for the grieving client is one of the blessing of our profession. As health care-providers, we listen but do not impose our opinion or prescribe. Our code of ethics dictates that the client’s privacy is respected and held in confidence.

BALANCE, WE ALL NEED IT by Beckie Jacobsmeyer
Have
you ever watched how children play a game of tag? First they run in one direction then suddenly they dart off in another, starting and stopping with ease. They are working on their balance. Unfortunately, as we enter adulthood we quit playing games like tag. A few of us who play tennis or other sports with quick change of direction and start/stop movements continue to exercise our balance. Most of us spend more and more time sitting at work and at home. Consequently our balance suffers due to lack of practice, so when we have to stop suddenly or change direction abruptly we fall. Another component of aging that enters the equation is loss of muscle mass due partly because of lack of exercise. Studies indicate that by age 70 there is a 40% loss of muscle mass. The elderly who make no effort to stay active show the following traits: *Atrophy and weakness in the gluteus and abdominal muscles *The confidence and ability to move quickly or respond to a
balance challenge is diminished *The ability to integrate upper and lower body movement via the trunk is reduced, negatively effecting agility, the ability to reach and maintain balance, and natural responses to correct loss of balance before falling *Reaction time, in general, is slowed The above explains why 1/3 of people age 65-79 fall each year and why ½ the people age 80 and older fall. These statistics are from a Yale research published in USA Today 12/18/00. This does not have to continue. Research shows that we are never too old to build muscle or improve our balance, especially when incorporating water. The following study was published in the AKWA Oct./ Nov. 2003 issue, an International Water Fitness Organization. The study by Sanders and colleagues included 61 sedentary women, (mean age 75 years) who performed shallow water exercises specifically targeting functional activities of daily living, including specific balance drills, 3 days
per week for 16 weeks, improved significantly in both static and dynamic skills measured on land. Additionally, speed walking and gait size significantly improved. The researchers assumed that the improvement shown by the water exercisers was due to their ability to make and correct movement errors in a safe environment that provided proprioceptive feedback to movement. Now that we know we need to focus on balance how do we go about doing it? Before balance comes proper body alignment, which can be difficult if you are dealing with bad posture due to muscle imbalance or spine and joint conditions. Muscle imbalance we can do something about. Spine and joint conditions may or may not be able to be corrected. Muscle imbalance can be corrected by stretching the tight, overworked muscles and strengthening the weak, under used muscles. The tight muscles
flexors. The weak muscles are usually all of the back and shoulder muscles as well as our abdominals. Proper body alignment is ears over shoulders, shoulders over hips, hips over knees, knees over ankles. This may be impossible for those with spine and joint conditions but strive for as close as possible. Try the following to help you get and stay in proper body alignment: *Center your weight in the middle of your foot, feel all four corners, big and little toes, inside and outside of your heel, keep knees soft *Rest your hands on your hips, tilt your hip bones forward and backward, gradually making smaller until you’re verily moving, now hold. *Pull your navel in and up, feeling your abdominal muscle below your navel become tight, feel your ribcage rise. *Lift your chest to the ceiling, feeling your shoulder blades fall down into your back pockets.

Continued from cover (Yellowstone National Park)... for the geyser’s “show” approximately every 90 minutes. The largest geyser is located just west of Old Faithful, known as Steamboat Geyser in the Norris Geyser Basin. There are over 300 geysers in Yellowstone and a total of at least 10,000 geothermal features throughout the park. Amazingly over twothirds of the world’s geysers are located in Yellowstone! Northern areas of the park feature some geothermal features, but is most known for its rugged mountains and vast prairie ranges in between. Hundreds of species of mammals, birds, fish and reptiles make Yellowstone their home, including several that are either endangered or threatened. Many unique and found only in this region of North America. Grizzly and Black bears, wolves, and freeranging herds of bison and elk are native to Yellowstone. Visitors often encounter many of the parks wildlife. Driving through the park offers views of many herds of animals as well as an occasional bear sighting as well. But don’t get too close, these animals are still “wild” and Yellowstone is their home, not ours. Park officials made it illegal in the 1980’s to feed or approach any animal in the park for your safety and theirs. Forest fires occur in the park each year; in the large forest fires of 1988, nearly one third of the park burned. However, forest
fires are also good and a natural occurrence in the park as well. Many of the park’s yearly fires are caused by lightning strikes and not by man. Today, natural fires are allowed to burn, but controlled for the safety of man and the park’s infrastructure. Many plants in the park will only reproduce after a fire. The intense heat allows many acorn and seeds to open and fertilize the new landscape scared by the forest fire. One of my favorite focal points of the park is Lake Yellowstone. Located in the center of Yellowstone and flowing into the majestic Yellowstone River to the south, the lake compromises more than 100 miles of shoreline. Yellowstone Lake is the largest body of water in Yellowstone National Park and is the largest freshwater lake above 7,000 feet. Many Geysers, fumaroles and hot springs are found alongside and even in the lake making some spectacular scenery! Yellowstone has numerous recreational opportunities, including hiking, camping, boating, fishing and of course, fantastic sightseeing! The park is very well maintained and offers paved roads, restaurants, shops, and camping and lodging facilities throughout. Visiting the park is best after June and into late September for the warmer weather. But many brave the cold harsh conditions of winter to explore the park by
snowmobile. We will be having a tour in September when we enjoy a taste of the brilliant fall foliage in the mountains. MARVELOUS MACKINAC by Anne Weibert
Anne Weibert, Vice President, DIRECTIONS Tours. One of my favorite summertime destinations happens to be Mackinac Island. As the heat of a St. Louis summer settles in, I find myself dreaming of cooler days, sparkling lake waters, sandy beaches and sweet Michigan cherries. As the old saying goes, half the fun is in getting there, and this especially holds true when traveling to Mackinac Island. One of my favorite driving routes takes me through Milwaukee and into the historic small city of Manitowoc, Wisconsin. This city is located on Lake Michigan at the mouth of the Manitowoc River and once boasted a great industry of shipbuilding. This heritage is reflected in the Wisconsin Maritime Museum, which sits along the Manitowoc River and is truly a delight to visit. It is here that the USS Cobia rests and is open for tour of both her topside and inside, including the torpedo rooms, wardroom, crew’s quarters, engine rooms and much more. The Cobia saw much action in WW 11 and was lost in May of 1945 during an eight hour depth charging by the Japanese minesweeper Hatsutaka. During that engagement, she was blasted into the muddy seafloor of the Gulf of Siam, but escaped intact, although heavily damaged. Today she is a National Historic Landmark and has been lovingly restored to her
1945 configuration. The SS Badger is a passenger and vehicle ferry that shuttles between Manitowoc, Wisconsin and Ludington, Michigan. She is the last coal fired passenger vessel operating on the Great Lakes and it is quite special to have the opportunity to take this sixty mile, four hour trip across Lake Michigan. The ferry saves travelers three and a half hours of travel time compared to the 411 mile drive from Manitowoc to Ludington via Chicago. There is plenty entertainment onboard the ferry including bingo, movies, gift shop and more. Traverse City is found just a short two hour drive from Ludington and is one of my favorite small towns in Michigan. Voted one of the 10 Best Small Towns in America by Fodor’s, Traverse City is a true delight anytime of the year. Here you will find breathtaking natural beauty, up market boutiques, incredible restaurants, lovely wineries, and great local microbreweries. Traverse City is the largest producer of tart cherries in the United States and every year during the first week of July the city hosts the National Cherry Festival, attracting 500,000 visitors! The journey from Traverse City to Mackinaw City is a two hour drive and is visually stunning. The glistening waters, lakeside homes, and gorgeous landscape are a joy to behold. Traveling through the vacation destination of Charlevoix is a delight, as there is a drawbridge to be traversed and here there is the pleasure to be had of seeing yacht after yacht ply these beautiful waters. Mackinaw City is where folks board the passenger ferry over to Mackinac Island. This is such a beautiful crossing of Lake Huron, and for those who love the wind in their hair, there is outdoor seating atop the ferry
for the twenty minute crossing. It is always a great pleasure to approach Mackinac Island, as she is a gem to gaze upon from the waters. Once on Mackinac Island, visitors either walk, bike or hire horse drawn carriages for transportation. There are no

motorized vehicles allowed on the pristine 3.8 mile island. Mackinac Island served as a strategic point for the Great Lakes fur trade and later the British established Fort Mackinac on the island during the American Revolutionary War. The Fort still stands today and is open for tours which include costumed docents and battle recreations. Mackinac Island first became a popular summer resort destination for the very wealthy in the late 19th century and the entire island is now listed as a National Historic Landmark. Travelers are wooed by the architecture, gardens, galleries, restaurants, history, natural beauty, and the eight mile bicycling trail that follows the island’s perimeter. Downtown streets are filled with fudge shops and tourists are known as “fudgies!” The natural beauty of the island is best experienced by horse-drawn carriage. Narrated carriage tours are always a highlight as the horses make their way through the heavily wooded areas, past the fort, and over to a scenic lookout of a natural carved arch that overlooks the water. The lilacs that drench
starred both Christopher Reeves and Jane Seymour. The Grand Hotel opened in 1887 and was a summer retreat for vacationers who arrived by lake steamers from Chicago, Erie, Montreal, and Detroit. The Grand Hotel’s front porch, the longest in the world, became a principal meeting place for all of Mackinac Island in the 1890’s. Today, guests enjoy rocking on the Adirondack chairs that line the massive porch while gazing out past manicured gardens. There are 386 guest rooms, none of which are alike. A full breakfast and a five-course dinner are included in the daily rate for most guests’ rooms. Formal attire is required after 6:00 p.m. and lends to the old-world elegance of this beautiful resort. One of the most grand luncheon buffets in the United States is presented here as is High Tea. The Grand Hotel exudes elegance and timelessness and is truly a very special experience!

GENERATION MORTGAGE COMPANY ADDS TRADITIONAL MORTGAGE VERSUS HOME EQUITY CONVERSION MORTGAGE
Generation
Equity Line-of-Credit (HELOC). “Most seniors do not realize that a Home Equity Conversion Mortgage is a loan identical to a traditional mortgage, just with different payment obligations. A traditional mortgage has required monthly payments whereas a HECM does not. Marketers have since relayed to the public that the principal benefit of getting a HECM is to stop making mortgage payments. In my opinion, this is not the best or only way to strategically utilize a HECM. The illustration we built in nu62.com shows how making monthly payments on a HECM buys the same equity in the property while growing a line-ofcredit for future use,” said Generation President and CEO Colin
Mortgage Company has added a side-by-side comparison of a traditional mortgage versus a Home Equity Conversion Mortgage (HECM or “reverse mortgage”) to nu62.com. The comparison is located under the “Learn More” section of the nu62sm website. Generation created the section to illustrate the potential cost and benefits of obtaining a HECM and utilizing the company’s Income Optionality Strategy as opposed to continuing the more traditional strategy employed by most seniors. The key difference is, the Income Optionality Strategy allows a borrower to create a growing line-of-credit for use in later years, which is not possible with a traditional mortgage or Home
Cushman. “Many seniors do not realize this option exists. That’s why we added the traditional mortgage versus HECM comparison to nu62.com – because seniors need to know that access to a significant amount of future income optionality is available through this home equity use strategy.” In addition to featuring an explanation of the Income Optionality Strategy and basic descriptions of traditional mortgages and HECMs, the nu62.com “Learn More” section includes graphic illustrations of both concepts. The illustrations show how the liquidity available through a traditional mortgage is principally tied to a home’s sale price, while the liquidity available through a HECM line-of-credit is
independent of a home’s value. In other words, with a traditional mortgage, a homeowner principally has access to the proceeds from the sale of their home, so the liquidity relates directly to the home’s value. However, with a HECM, a borrower may continue living in the home while accessing funds from the entire line-of-credit – even if a home does not appreciate as projected. As a result, the HECM line-of-credit can protect liquidity in the event of home price declines. To learn more about the Income Optionality Strategy and the HECM line-of-credit, visit www.nu62.com/learn-more. What Can Vacations Teach You about Investing?
Summer is almost here — which
means it’s officially vacation season. You may be looking forward to “getting away from it all,” but, as you know, vacations actually require a fair amount of planning. And it might surprise you to learn that some of the efforts required for successful vacations can impart some valuable lessons in other areas of your life — such as investing. Here are some vacationrelated moves that you may want to transfer to the investment and financial arenas: • Secure your home. If you’re going on vacation for a week or so, you may need to take some steps to safeguard your home: stopping your mail and newspaper, putting on a timer to turn on lights, alerting your neighbors that you’ll be out of town, and so on. But while it’s important to secure your home today, you will also want
by Jeff Ponte, F.A. Edward Jones
to help ensure it will be there for your family in the future, should anything happen to you. That’s why you’ll want to maintain adequate life and disability insurance. • Know your route. If you are driving to your vacation destination, you will want to plan your route beforehand, so that you can avoid time-consuming delays and detours. And to reach your financial goals, such as a comfortable retirement, you will also want to chart your course — by creating an investment strategy that is designed to help you work towards those goals based on your specific risk tolerance, investment preferences and time horizon. • Keep enough gas in the tank. As you set out on a road trip, you need a full tank of gas in your car, and you’ll have to keep refueling along the way. And to “go the distance” in pursuing your financial goals, you will need to
“heat-seeking” investor, focus your efforts on building a diversified array of quality investments appropriate for your needs. If you only own one type of financial asset, and a downturn hits that asset class, your portfolio could take a big hit. But by diversifying your holdings, you can help reduce the effects of volatility. Keep in mind, though, that diversification, by itself, can’t guarantee profits or protect against loss. As we’ve seen, some of the same principles that apply to creating a vacation may also be applicable to your investing habits. So, put these principles to work to enjoy a pleasant vacation — and a potentially rewarding investment experience.
have sufficient “fuel” in the form of investments with reasonable growth potential. Without a reasonable amount of growth-oriented vehicles in your portfolio, you could lose ground to inflation and potentially fall short of your objectives — so, over time, you may need to “refuel” by reviewing your portfolio and rebalancing if necessary. • Protect yourself from getting burned. If your vacation plans include a stay at the beach, you’ll need to protect yourself and your family from the hot sun — so make sure you’re all using sunscreen. When you invest, you can also get “burned” if you are not careful — especially if you are inclined to chase after “hot” investments. By the time you hear about these socalled sizzlers, they may already be cooling off, and, even more importantly, they just might not be appropriate for your goals and risk tolerance. silverspace Continued from cover (Medicaid F.A.Q’s)... eligibility to receive Medicaid benefits requires that you pass certain income and asset tests. The reason for Medicaid planning is simple. First, you need to provide enough assets for the security of your loved ones. Second, the rules are extremely complicated and confusing. The result is that without planning and advice, many people spend more than they should and their family security is jeopardized. I’ve added my children’s names to our bank account. Do they still count? Yes. ~ The entire amount is counted unless you can prove some or all of the money was contributed by the other person who is on the account. This rule applies to cash assets such as: • Savings and checking accounts • Credit union share and draft accounts
• Certificates of deposit • U.S. Savings Bonds Can’t I Just Give My Assets Away? Many people wonder, can’t I give my assets away? The answer is, maybe, but only if it is done just right. The law has severe penalties for people who simply give away their assets to create Medicaid eligibility. In Missouri, for example, every (roughly) $4,000 given away during the five years prior to a Medicaid application creates a one month period of ineligibility. So even though the federal gift tax laws allow you to give away up to $13,000 per year without gift tax consequences, those gifts could result in a period of ineligibility for Missouri Medicaid of over four months. Giving under the new rules may be possible; however, it is
critically important that you have the advice of an attorney well versed in these new rules. Will I Lose My Home? For many, the home constitutes much or most of their life savings. Often, it’s the only asset that a person has to pass on to his or her children. Under the Medicaid regulations, the home is an exempt asset (so long as equity is less than $525,000). This means that it is not taken into account when calculating eligibility for Medicaid. Though some families do spend virtually all of their savings on nursing home care, Medicaid often does not require it. There are a number of strategies which can be used to protect family financial security. Mark Easley, Attorney at Law (314) 918-0088 For More Information, see display ad below.

Judy’s Tips For June Many
people have Facebook accounts and make posts or share information in a very light-hearted, unconcerned manner. Please, when you are on Facebook, use caution and be serious in your thinking. A photo of your son blowing out candles on his cake with the banner in the background announcing his 16th birthday just gave out his date of birth. Does the same account have photos of him playing with
his favorite dog with a comment naming the dog? What about classroom photos? Have you posted who is his favorite teacher? Security questions often ask the name of a favorite childhood pet, teacher, or school attended. Are there photos of various grandparents named? You may have posted a mother’s maiden name. All of these seemingly innocent posts and photos are placed on this
medium where almost anyone can eventually gain access. If the wrong person study’s your Facebook account, years from now your child’s internet safety is compromised. “A CELEBRATION OF THE SOUND OF ART” RAISES MORE THAN $230,000 FOR THE RADIO ARTS FOUNDATION – SAINT LOUIS by Annemarie Schumacher
Major
musical luminaries Gil Shaham, Orli Shaham and David Robertson took to the stage of The Sheldon Center Hall the evening of Wednesday, March 19, 2014 to play at “A Celebration of the Sound of Art,” the inaugural gala to benefit The Radio Arts Foundation – Saint Louis (RAF-STL). The event also commemorated the first-year anniversary of the station. With the flip of a switch, at precisely 10:00 a.m. CST on April 8, 2013, classical music and the sound of art gloriously returned to the St. Louis radio airwaves. The station operates on analog radio at 107.3 FM and on hybrid digital radio at KIHT 96.3 HD2. It can also be streamed 24 hours a day at www. rafstl.org. A RAF-STL app is also available on iTunes. The app allows listens to take the station anywhere in the world they may travel. At “A Celebration of the Sound of Art” the performers enchanted a crowd of more than 400 attendees with a variety of compositions, including a new piece written specifically for the renowned violinist and acclaimed
pianist, who are brother and sister. The piece was commissioned by the Shahams and written by a young Israeli composer. Robertson, whose wife is Orli Shaham, served as the evening’s emcee. Throughout the 70-minute concert, Robertson delighted attendees with his personal musings of marrying into the gifted musical family. Honorary co-chairs for the event were Ambassador and Mrs. Sam Fox. Peggy Ritter and Marsha Rusnack served as co-chairmen of the gala. The evening raised more than $230,000 to fund the operating expenses of the foundation, whose mission is to operate the classical music radio station, as well as to create a nucleus for the cultural and performing arts community in the St. Louis area to connect, grow and flourish for years to come. Major sponsors of the event included Centene Charitable Foundation, World Wide Technology and the Steward Foundation. Ameren, Armstrong Teasdale, Mercy and Ladue News were patron sponsors. RAF-STL partners with
distinguished local arts organizations, as well as solo and chamber artists, to broadcast performances, conduct in-depth interviews, air behind-the-scenes programs, and cover the local arts and cultural scene. Beyond classical music, RAF-STL is dedicated to jazz, blues and opera – promoting the finest regional arts and cultural organizations, as well as uniquely talented individuals. Organized as a nonprofit, 501(c)(3) entity, the station offers
a broad and invigorating arts format, both on analog radio at 107.3 FM and in hybrid digital at KIHT 96.3 HD2. Content is also streamed live at www.rafstl.org. Every day, listeners are delighted to hear both new and familiar broadcasting voices on the RAFSTL airwaves. Long time radio and arts personalities who are part of the station’s regular programming include Jim Doyle, Kathy Lawton Brown and Tom Sudholt. www.rafstl.org

My Bella Jewelry
Exotic & Uniq ue Pieces Just For You!
By Leila Gierer
M
y Bella Jewelry was started 7 years ago and is named after my beautiful daughter Isabella. My husband and I adopted Isabella in Brazil 9 years ago. We live in the United States and we were not able to bring Isabella home with us. She is currently living in Brazil with my mother. (Thank you Dear Lord and Mom!) We have been desperately trying to bring her to our home ever since we adopted her. The International adoption process is very expensive and the attorney fees between US and Brazil are mounting. To help pay for the these
expenses and travel fees going to Brazil to be with my baby and sending support payments to Isabella, I started my jewelry business. All the money from my jewelry goes to help get Isabella home to me. All my jewelry pieces are one of a kind. The pieces are made of seeds, semi-precious stones, coconut shells and other materials. I have just added a kids and teens jewelry line! I also create custom pieces that only you will have! You can view my jewelry online at www.mybellajewelry.com and you can call me at 636-466-5652.
