Honoring Veterans Each year on the July 4, we honor our founding fathers and their great vision for a country whose citizens could enjoy the freedoms and independence they had previously been deprived. The holiday gives us a chance to reflect on the sacrifices they, as well as the soldiers who fought in the Revolutionary War, made to allow our great democracy to become a reality. It is in that spirit, honoring those who have fought for our freedoms as well as helping people to maintain their independence, that Veterans Care Coordination (VCC) was founded. Simply put, the company

helps veterans, spouses, surviving spouses, and their families navigate the arduous approval process of acquiring the pension with aid and attendance benefit through the Department of Veterans Affairs. The program is a little-known allowance that provides an enhanced pension to pay for in-home assistance and care, allowing older veterans and their spouses to live independently as long as possible. According to VA statistics, a significant amount of eligible beneficiaries are either unaware of this benefit or do not realize they...
New Thermal Imaging
Digital Infrared Thermal Imaging (DITI) is a totally non-invasive procedure for detecting and monitoring a number of diseases by showing the thermal abnormalities present in the body. X-Ray, C.T. Ultrasound and M.R.I. are all tests of anatomy that measure the structures of your body….”DITI” is unique in its capability to show physiological change and metabolic processes. It is the only method available for “visualizing” pain. Anyone can benefit from the information available through this procedure. A full body or upper body scan can be used for many years to come as a basis from which to assess

overall health and to monitor specific areas of the body or specific protocols. Monitoring the inflammation in your body gives you the opportunity to be aware of developing conditions usually well before any symptoms show up and often before the problem is developed enough to show up on traditional testing. The earlier a problem is detected, the easier it is to correct. Thermography is a test of cellular physiology (function). Thermography offers a unique opportunity to “see” inflammation, vascular activity and lymphatic activity in the body.

Wyoming and Yellowstone Visiting Yellowstone National Park is a feast for all senses! Every year I have the pleasure of traveling to Yellowstone on tours and personal journeys, and everytime is a new adventure! Yellowstone National Park was America’s first National Park, established in 1872 by pioneer Ferdinand Vandiveer Hayden. Located along the upper Rocky Mountain range in the northwest corner of Wyoming, Yellowstone is one of America’s most remote National Parks. Surrounded by dense forest and mountain ranges, beautiful lakes, canyons, rivers and mountain ranges and features some of the world’s most dynamic natural features. The park was the first of its
kind in our country, and is known for its wildlife and geothermal features. More than two million acres, or 3,000 square miles, stretch over the surface area that is known as Yellowstone. The park is so diverse and large that the park is literally divided into many climate and natural zones. The most famous area is known as the Yellowstone Caldera. Half of the world’s geothermal features are in this area of Yellowstone. Fueled by an ongoing underground volcano, lava flows and rocks from volcanic eruptions cover most of the land area of Yellowstone. It is one of the largest remaining ecosystems on our planet. The caldera area features some of the most impressive geysers and hot springs in the park. The most famous geyser in the park, and perhaps in the world, is Old Faithful Geyser. Although not the largest or most powerful geyser in the park, Old Faithful is just that... “faithful” and dependable. . Park Rangers have been able to estimate Old Faithful’s eruptions for over 100 years. Today, crowds line the boardwalk around Old

Faithful approximately every 90 minutes. The largest geyser is located just west of Old Faithful, known as Steamboat Geyser in the Norris Geyser Basin. There are over 300 geysers in Yellowstone and a total of at least 10,000 geothermal features throughout the park. Amazingly over two-thirds of the world’s geysers are located in Yellowstone! Northern areas of the park contains some geothermal features,

EXPECT THE BEST by Maggie Blais, LMT
A client of mine asked me yesterday what kind of reaction I got from people when they found out that I was a massage therapist. I had to laugh a little because it seems that when I mention what I do, everyone’s aches and pains come out for discussion. They tell me about their neck pain, back pain, sore shoulders, bum knees, tennis elbows, sciatica, tendonitis….. well, you get the idea. Now don’t get me wrong. I don’t have a problem talking to anyone about muscles and movement and how they can help themselves feel better. I can honestly say I love it (or I wouldn’t do it); however, what really makes me happy is the fact that massage has become such a mainstream thing to do. Many people have come to consider a regular appointment with their massage therapist to be as important as dental exams or a trip to the eye care center. I suppose I like to think that the change in attitude toward massage came from emotional maturity and the natural evolution of higher intelligence, but I’m pretty sure it came from the fact that some smart business person decided to franchise it and sell it like fast food. We are, in many ways, a nation who likes our convenience, and the minute
somebody came out with the concept of a massage place people could join like a gym, and where they could get in practically anytime (as long as they weren’t too concerned about quality), massage became much more commonplace, affordable, and accessible. I have to give the franchises credit for that. They made pretty much everyone aware of how normal it was to get a massage. Now, having said that, would I recommend a franchise establishment to anyone? For some people, yes I would, as long as they know what they are getting into. The primary focus of the franchise massage places is SALES, not necessarily the quality of your experience. Their main objective is to get you to “join”, to sign up, give them a credit card to charge automatically every month, and agree to give them 30-60 days written notice if you want to cancel. When it comes to your massage, you may or may not get the same therapist every time, and they may or may not be any good (although some are excellent). While it’s great that new massage school graduates have a place to work and gain experience, let’s face it, the franchises aren’t that selective about who they hire, but they can be

convenient if that is your main criteria. We at Creekside Massage want your experience with massage therapy to be more personalized and of a higher caliber. We consider ourselves part of your “wellness” team, and our goal is to work with you to achieve a balance of strength, flexibility, and relaxation. While our rates are the same or less than the franchises, we don’t have the burden of a “sales quota” to keep us from focusing on the client and providing the best massage available from highly trained, experienced therapists. JULY TEA TALK Green Tea Benefits by Kevin McDonnell, PhD
Trinkets Tea and Me, a teashop in downtown Kirkwood, located at 217 S. Kirkwood Rd. between Spencer’s Grill and Imo’s, has expanded to nearly 100 premium loose leaf teas for 2014. As always, the teas are at the lowest prices in the St. Louis area. These organic teas offer numerous health benefits. In July we will discuss the research on the potentially numerous health benefits of Green Tea. Some Teas may be slightly more antioxidant rich but there is no Tea that may provide such a broad range of benefits as Green Tea. Some studies have shown that substances in Green Tea may have several weight loss promoting effects. The American Journal of Physiology (2007) concluded, “Scientists state that green tea may fight the decrease in metabolism that typically accompanies weight loss and may also have a positive effect on regulating appetite”. A study conducted at the Cleveland’s Western Reserve University showed that Green Tea could help prevent rheumatoid arthritis or reduce the symptoms of people already suffering from the disease. Finally, many studies have examined the relationship between Green Tea consumption and reduced cancer risk.
A Japanese study showed that men who drank 10 cups per day were likely to stay cancer free for 3 years longer than men who drank less than 3 cups per day pointing out that there are up to 320mg. of polyphenols (known to potentially reduce cancer risk) in 3 cups of Green Tea. Trinkets Tea and Me offers over 15 organic Green Teas. We always suggest that you do your own review of research and claims, discuss the information with your physician, and draw your own conclusions on the health benefits of various Teas. However, note that research studies are likely to use the Best Premium Teas. So, don’t “shortchange” yourself. Buy Premium Teas and save money at the same time. Come to Trinkets Tea and Me, an alternative to the “Overpriced High Pressure Mall Store”. Enjoy a relaxing pressure free atmosphere where you can discuss Teas, pay the best prices in town, and maybe hear a song from Tina the St. Louis “singing Tea lady”.

Medical Thermography of Metro St. Louis Inc.
Continued from cover (New Thermal Imaging)... Most doctors now agree that all disease begins as inflammation. An inflammatory process begins and an error in metabolism (conversion of nutrients into energy) and growth is the result. Functional breakdown occurs long before there is a structural defect. A full body or upper body scan can be used for many years to come as a basis from which to assess overall health and to monitor specific areas of the body or specific protocols. Thermography is especially appropriate as a breast health screening tool for women between the ages of 30 and 50 whose denser breast tissue makes it more difficult for mammography to pick up suspicious lesions. Women with implants can monitor the position and look for evidence of leakage. DITI detects the subtle physiologic changes that accompany breast pathology, whether it is cancer, fibrocystic disease, an infection, hormone imbalance or a vascular disease. Thermography is not a replacement for mammography. These tests have different roles. Thermography shows cell function while mammography shows structure. Mammography, or another “structure” test, is necessary to pinpoint the exact location of an existing tumor for biopsy. Research has shown that early
detection is key in successfully treating cancer. Thermography can provide the first signal that a problem is developing. It is designed to be used in addition to regular breast care including monthly self exams and yearly doctor exams. You will likely need to consult a doctor in preventive or holistic health to help you address any information within your report.

WHY IS EXFOLIATION SO IMPORTANT? by Andrea Sims, Rodan & Fields Consultant
When researching skin care and their ingredients, I have learned a lot about exfoliation. In my opinion it is the most important thing you can do for you skin as far as the health of your skin and to minimize the signs of aging. Our skin’s surface is made up of layers do dead skin cells that are constantly being sloughed off as the deeper layers continue to reproduce new cells. This constant production keeps our skin healthy and able to do its job of protecting us from outside germs and toxins, releasing toxins produced by our bodies and controlling out temperature. Sometimes the topmost layers of dead skins cells don’t slough off easily. This buildup of dead skin cells on the surface of our skin gives the skin a dull dry appearance. These cells collect in our pores and fine lines. Pores get clogged which leads to blackheads and pimples and blocked pores can’t do their job. Exfoliation is especially important through the aging process and after menopause for women as the natural process of skin erosion becomes uneven which gives the skin a dry and rough character. The collection of these cells in our wrinkles ages them appear large and no one wants that. Exfoliation is also important for men as it exposes the hair follicles allowing a better shave. Exfoliation should always be done and followed by moisturizing. Rodan + Fields Redefine Regimen and Macro Exfoliator (DSA 2014 Ethos Award winner) is designed to remove 5 million dead skin cells in 5 min to provide radiant, healthy, and a less lined complexion.
K
Exfoliation is the removal of the uppermost layer of dead skin cells of our skin. This will clean out the pores and wrinkles as well as speeding up the production of new cells. Then the skin will appear healthier and more radiant and youthful. Manual exfoliation is the process of scrubbing the skin with an abrasive either by using a rough cloth or sponge, or using a cleansing product with micro beads. This will rub the dead cells off the skin’s surface. This should be done all over the body, but more gently on the face. Chemical exfoliaters are the hydroxy acids. These chemicals are usually derived from plants or milk. Cleopatra used to take baths in milk because the improvement to her skin came from lactic acid. These hydroxy acids “loosen the glue” between the dead cells on the surface of the skin. There are two different kinds of hydroxy acids, Alpha and Beta. The beta hydroxy acid is salicylic acid and this one is beneficial because not only will it loosen the dead cells, but it is also oil soluble. This means it can sink into the pores that are clogged with the oily sebum that the pores produce. That makes it a great ingredient for acne products. The alpha hydroxy acids are glycolic acid, citric acid, malic acid and lactic acid among others. Glycolic acid is one of the best because its molecule is small enough to be absorbed by the skin and penetrate to the lower layers. This causes an increased production of collagen so the skin plumps up.
olleen’s orner
If you are going to do only one thing for your skin, I recommend exfoliation. It will keep your skin healthy and young looking. The process is easily done at home by using a cleanser with micro beads and a moisturizer with hydroxy acids. For a free skin care consultation please call Andrea Sims @ 720-260-8206 or andrea.sims@comcast.net. Our lines address fine lines and wrinkles, sun damage, sensitive skin and acne. Welcome to the new Kolleen’s Korner! Kolleen L. Simons, MSW, LCSW is a Licensed Clinical Social worker who has been providing counseling services for over 15 years to children and adults. Dear Kolleen, I have never asked for help, but have been feeling sad and down for quite a while. I don’t enjoy spending time with my friends anymore and sometimes it seems so hard to even get out of bed. I am confused on where to even start asking for help (which makes it even harder). Like, what’s the difference between a therapist and a psychiatrist? And I’ve seen the movies, will there really be a couch at the appointment?! Signed, Confused and Blue
Dear Confused and Blue, Those are some very good questions you have, Confused and Blue. Let me help you start to understand. A psychiatrist is a doctor who specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of mental, addictive, and emotional disorders. They can help a person by administering diagnostic testing and prescribing medications. On another hand, a therapist specifically specializes in talk therapy. A therapist can be a Licensed Clinical Social Worker or Licensed Professional Counselor. Either one specializes in talk therapy. Therapy can help address a large number of specific concerns or issues. There are various approaches to therapy with the most commonly used being cognitive behavioral. Cognitive behavioral therapy helps address how our thoughts impact our feelings and actions. This is the approach that I use daily in my practice. This does not mean that the therapist ignores childhood or past history. The past is often referenced to help understand patterns of behaviors. And - Yes, there is a couch! It is not uncommon for there to be couch in a therapist office, because they want to create an environment in which you feel at ease and comfortable taking about issues that may be hard to talk about. I hope this helps resolve some of the questions.

TRADITIONAL VERSES REVERSE MORTGAGE... WHICH IS BETTER FOR YOU?
Generation Mortgage Company has added a sideby-side comparison of a traditional mortgage versus a Home Equity Conversion Mortgage (HECM or “reverse mortgage”) to nu62.com. The comparison is located under the “Learn More” section of the nu62sm website. Generation created the section to illustrate the potential cost and benefits of obtaining a HECM and utilizing the company’s Income Optionality Strategy as opposed to continuing the more traditional strategy employed by most seniors. The key difference is, the Income Optionality Strategy allows a borrower to create a growing line-of-credit for use in later years, which is not possible with a traditional mortgage or Home Equity Line-of-Credit (HELOC). “Most seniors do not realize that a Home Equity Conversion Mortgage is a loan identical to a traditional mortgage, just with different payment obligations. A traditional mortgage has required monthly payments whereas a HECM does not. Marketers have since relayed to the public that the principal benefit of getting a HECM is to stop making mortgage payments. In my opinion, this is not the best or only way to strategically utilize a HECM. The illustration we built in nu62.com shows how making monthly payments on a HECM buys the same equity in the property while growing a line-of- credit for future use,” said Generation President and CEO Colin Cushman. “Many seniors do not realize this option exists. That’s why we added the traditional mortgage versus HECM comparison to nu62.com – because seniors need to know that access to a significant amount of future income optionality is
available through this home equity use strategy.” In addition to featuring an explanation of the Income Optionality Strategy and basic descriptions of traditional mortgages and HECMs, the nu62.com “Learn More” section includes graphic illustrations of both concepts. The illustrations show how the liquidity available through a traditional mortgage is principally tied to a home’s sale price, while the liquidity available through a HECM line-of-credit is independent of a home’s value. In other words, with a traditional mortgage, a homeowner principally has access to the proceeds from the sale of their home, so the liquidity relates directly to the home’s value. However, with a HECM, a borrower may continue living in the home while accessing funds from the entire line-of-credit – even if a home does not appreciate as projected. As a result, the HECM line-of-credit can protect liquidity in the event of home price declines. To learn more about the Income Optionality Strategy and the HECM line-ofcredit, visit www.nu62.com/learn-more. For more information about Generation Mortgage Company, visit www.generationmortgage.com. Continued from cover (Wyoming Yellowstone)... for the geyser’s “show” approximately every 90 minutes. The largest geyser is located just west of Old Faithful, known as Steamboat Geyser in the Norris Geyser Basin. There are over 300 geysers in Yellowstone and a total of at least 10,000 geothermal features throughout the park. Amazingly over twothirds of the world’s geysers are located in Yellowstone! Northern areas of the park feature some geothermal features, but is most known for its rugged mountains and vast prairie ranges in between. Hundreds of species of mammals, birds, fish and reptiles make Yellowstone their home, including several that are either endangered or threatened. Many unique and found only in this region of North America. Grizzly and Black bears, wolves, and freeranging herds of bison and elk are native to Yellowstone. Visitors often encounter many of the parks wildlife. Driving through the park offers views of many herds of animals as well as an occasional bear sighting as well. But don’t get too close, these animals are still “wild” and Yellowstone is their home, not ours. Park officials made it illegal in the 1980’s to feed or approach any animal in the park for your safety and theirs. Forest fires occur in the park each year; in the large forest fires of 1988, nearly one third of the park burned. However, forest
fires are also good and a natural occurrence in the park as well. Many of the park’s yearly fires are caused by lightning strikes and not by man. Today, natural fires are allowed to burn, but controlled for the safety of man and the park’s infrastructure. Many plants in the park will only reproduce after a fire. The intense heat allows many acorn and seeds to open and fertilize the new landscape scared by the forest fire. One of my favorite focal points of the park is Lake Yellowstone. Located in the center of Yellowstone and flowing into the majestic Yellowstone River to the south, the lake compromises more than 100 miles of shoreline. Yellowstone Lake is the largest body of water in Yellowstone National Park and is the largest freshwater lake above 7,000 feet. Many Geysers, fumaroles and hot springs are found alongside and even in the lake making some spectacular scenery! Yellowstone has numerous recreational opportunities, including hiking, camping, boating, fishing and of course, fantastic sightseeing! The park is very well maintained and offers paved roads, restaurants, shops, and camping and lodging facilities throughout. Visiting the park is best after June and into late September for the warmer weather. But many brave the cold harsh conditions of winter to explore the park by
snowmobile. We will be having a tour in September when we enjoy a taste of the brilliant fall foliage in the mountains. No matter if you travel by car, railDIRECTIONS Tours is headed west to Yellowstone and more on our Great Western Parks Tour! GREAT WESTERN PARKS
SAME PRICE AS 2012
SEPTEMBER 1 - 12, 2014 (12 Days) $ 1947.00 pp DBL Singles Only $350.00 addtl The Great Western Park tour is a feast for all senses! This tour features the beauty of South Dakota and Wyoming. South Dakota is known for more types of rock formations and sediments than anywhere else in the continental USA. Early afternoon will bring us to South Dakota’s Famous Corn Palace in Mitchell, SD. Covered in western murals completely made out of corn, this unique and one-of-a-kind attraction is a must see. This evening will find us just a little further west in Chamberlain, SD with a stay at the famous “Al’s Oasis” on the Missouri River. To the west finds us in the unique Badlands National Park. Created by the erosion of the earth’s surface everyday, The Badland’s terrain carves out an incredible sandcastle-like valley… absolutely stunning! We will finish our visit of the Badlands at the famous Wall Drug Store.
Westward we arrive at majestic Black Hills. Born out of convulsions within the earth’s crust, shaped by wind and water, South Dakota’s Black Hills have witnessed the drama of the West unfold-from the struggles of the Lakota Sioux to the rush of gold feverstricken miners, to the battles of conservationist looking to preserve these natural wonders for future generations. Now
we will explore the Black Hills just as our pioneers did years ago. Enjoy touring Mount Rushmore, Keystone, and Crazy Horse Monument. Pushing into Wyoming we will travel Sitting Bull Pass and the Ten Sleep Canyon. This spectacular scenery is breathtaking as we work our way through the canyon!
We now have arrived at Yellowstone National Park America’s first National Park, established in 1872 by pioneer Ferdinand Vandiveer Hayden. The park was the first of its kind in our country, and is known for its wildlife and geothermal features. Fueled
by an ongoing underground volcano, lava flows and rocks from volcanic eruptions cover most of the land area of Yellowstone. Park Rangers have been able to estimate Old Faithful’s eruptions for over 100 years. Today, crowds line the boardwalk around Old Faithful for the geyser’s “show” approximately every 90 minutes. Grizzly and Black bears, wolves, and free-ranging herds of bison and elk are native to Yellowstone. Visitors often encounter many of the parks wildlife. One of the park’s biggest focal points is Lake Yellowstone. Just south of Yellowstone we will explore The Grand Tetons National Park. The Tetons are some of the most photographed mountains in the world due to their drastic elevation and no foothills. At the base of the Tetons we will enjoy an
incredible boat cruise on Jenny Lake. While in the Tetons we will enjoy our overnights in Jackson Hole. Many shops and boutiques offer great western collectables. If you are more adventurous, we will be offering a guided float trip down the Snake River for wildlife sightings. One evening we will be entertained by the cowboys and cowgirls at the famous Jackson Hole BAR J Chuck Wagon Dinner Show. Don’t Miss Out! This tour is one of our most popular every year with an incredible price that cannot be beat!

Go Green!
silverspace Continued from cover (Medicaid F.A.Q’s)... are eligible to apply. VCC is dedicated to guiding and assisting veterans and their surviving spouses to get the benefits they not only need, but have also earned. Our company strives to help this group with the same honor and integrity in which they served our country. VCC also offers interest free loans in situations where a veteran, spouse or surviving spouse cannot afford the out-of-pocket costs of needed home services, while waiting for the VA to begin reimbursement. Often without the loan, the veteran or spouse may not be able to access needed services because of their
inability to pay. VCC’s unique program alleviates the unnecessary worry, financial burdens and family hardships a waiting period may cause. Entrepreneur Kyle Laramie, an accredited claims agent by the Department of Veterans Affairs, founded VCC in 2011. “Each day, I am driven by the memory of my grandfather, Norbert Laramie, a World War II American hero who unnecessarily missed out on essential VA benefits,” Laramie said. “Our family simply did not know about the resources that were available to assist him in his golden years. And that is my daily motivation.” The company recently moved
to a new 16,000 square foot corporate headquarters at 300 Parkway Industrial Drive in St. Charles County. The move follows and aggressive year of growth for VCC, which now employs more than 40 full-time employees. VCC recently partnered with Greater St. Louis Honor Flight, whose mission it is to safely transport World War II veterans to see the National World War II Memorial in Washington, D.C. Employees of Veterans Care Coordination greeted flight participants and distributed gift bags containing a variety of items to commemorate the flight, as well as assisted them with the trip.
THE PRICE OF FREEDOM by Judy Erlson
During this month, while we enjoy our Independence Day celebrations, we should also take time to consider the price of our freedom. Our country was founded not only by bold adventurers and people of strong convictions, but also by patriots willing to put their lives on the line in the defense of our nation and our ideals. The men and women of today’s military are no different from those who served in our past--each person in the military whom I’ve met has that fire in the belly to make a difference in the world by answering that inner call to service. However, one thing that really amazes me is the number of people who when questioned, believes that all of our veterans’ needs are being met through government resources. And for some Veterans, that may be true. Unfortunately for others, they’re not. For some members of the Military and Veterans, their circumstances fall through the cracks in the guidelines. Ask Veterans or Military Families if they’ve ever gone without pay for a month or two. Imagine being half a world away, while your family is facing eviction or a car being repossessed. Last year, I answered my personal call to
duty, not in the military, but in a not-for-profit called USA Cares, which helps our Military Families in Crisis. The Missouri / Southern Illinois Chapter needs private and corporate sponsors and opportunities to share our Mission throughout our region. Step up and show your support of our Veterans and Military Families both locally and nationally. Money donated here, stays here. Take a few moments to learn about our Mission. USA Cares is a 501(c)(3) with more than 10 years of experience awarding grants in four categories. We respond within 48 business hours after online application at our website www.usacares.org. Become a mission partner and help us stop evictions and foreclosures for our active Military and recent Veterans. We assist all branches of service across our Nation. TAKING FEMALE HAIR LOSS SERIOUSLY
For many years the only gender who came forth admitting they were suffering from hair loss were men and now millions of women are coming to grips with the fact that they too suffer from this malady. For many years, if you came into Hans Wiemann’s facility you would rarely see ladies in the lobby unless they were there waiting for their husbands, but TODAY 60% of Hans’ clientele are female. Ladies have finally come to realize that hair loss is not something to be ashamed of. It is a natural process in many and does not discriminate between men and women. In order to increase awareness in women, Hans Wiemann is working on a spectacular seminar on hair loss in women at their state of the art facility. The program will include Kayla Martell who was Miss Delaware 2011
and Miss America runner up in 2011. Kayla is almost entirely bald and has been since about15 years of age. Kayla has experienced the pain of hair loss and has overcome it and will share her story. Dr. Larry Samuels, St Louis Dermatologist and Chief of Dermatology at St. Luke’s Hospital and Instructor of Dermatology at Washington University will speak to women about causes and cures for this situation. Representatives from the world’s largest hair manufacturer will be there as well as consultants to perform hair and scalp analysis to help determine YOUR cause of hair loss or thinning or damaged hair. This should not be missed! The seminar is free complimentary appetizers and drinks will be served. Call 314-721-6657 or see Han Wiemann’s Advertisement on back cover for further information.

silverspace DANGERS AND ADVANTAGES OF GIFTING by Mark Easley, Attorney at Law
What is the advantage to making financial gifts? When a parent or grandparent makes a financial gift to someone in their family, they not only lower their taxable estate, they have the additional benefit of seeing a loved one enjoy the windfall. However, there are some issues to keep in mind when gifting: 1. The federal Annual Gift Tax Exclusion, 2. Will the person making the gift(s) need to qualify for MO HealthNet (Medicaid) Benefits in the near future? 3. Will the person making the gift(s) need to qualify for Veterans benefits? These three issues are entirely separate from each other and have very different consequences. What is the Annual Gift Tax Exclusion? The annual gift tax exclusion, i.e., the amount you can give to any individual each year without it being considered a taxable gift, is indexed for inflation, and the Internal Revenue Service has announced that the current annual gift tax exclusion is $14,000 up from $13,000 in 2012. Thus a married couple is able to give up to $28,000 to each of multiple recipients
without incurring any federal gift tax. Gifts of the annual exclusion amount to children, grandchildren and other beneficiaries are often recommended as an excellent way to reduce one’s taxable estate at no transfer tax cost. Outright gifts to grandchildren of the annual exclusion amount will also be exempt from the generationskipping transfer tax (the “GST”). Gifts in trust for grandchildren that qualify for the gift tax annual exclusion can also qualify for exclusion from the GST if the trust is properly structured. What are the consequences of gifting when qualifying for Mo HealthNet (Medicaid)? If the person making the gift(s) requires long term care in the future and needs to apply for Medicaid benefits, a five year “look back” period is required on all gifts made to people, trusts, or charitable organizations. The consequence of the gift is a delay in eligibility for benefits. The length of delay is calculated by the Department of Social Services based on the amount of transfer and the current nursing home reimbursement rate. The current rate of penalty as of 2014 is a one month
“penalty period” for every $4,563.00 gifted. What is the effect of gifting on qualification for Veterans benefits? Gifting is treated differently by the Veterans Administration, and a veteran or surviving spouse of a veteran may give his/her assets away. In order to qualify for VA benefits the amount of assets a veteran or surviving spouse of a veteran may keep varies according to the age of the recipient, his/her need for care and his/her amount of assets. By setting up certain estate planning documents, one can qualify for VA benefits without having to spend-down his/her assets on care. What is a generous person to do to navigate through a gifting quagmire? The best step a person can make when planning to make a financial gift is to contact an attorney who is well-versed in gifting and how it will affect the future of the person making the gift. Judy’s Tips For July Are you considering making a donation to a charity? How can you be sure you’re donating to a “good” charity and not a poorly ran one, or even some scam? The best answer is RESEARCH. First of all, is the organization well-known? This is not a foolproof way to be certain, but it helps. Things to watch with well-known charities include “knock-offs” or “sound alike” charities. Some scam artists will start a fake charity with a similar sounding name. Another problem with well-known charities are the amounts of money spent on salaries (some non-profit executives make over $300,000 per year as a salary), and money spent on programs versus
fundraising. Some well-known charities spend more donated money on fundraising and/or salaries than on programs. Secondly, there are many appeals for your money for religious sounding charities—which are actually scams. I recently read on realscam.com (which quoted Washington-based North American Securities Administrators Association) that scams using religion as a lure have taken in about $1.8 billion in the last three years. Lastly, don’t send small donations to many charities. Many organizations that receive small donations will sell or trade your contact information to other ones, in order to increase their funding. Soon, you’ll have a mailbox full of heartbreaking stories and photos. So, now you might ask, “How do I RESEARCH a charity?” If you have access to a computer you can do the first three items on the following list.
“review” and/or “scam” and check out what comes up 2) check out websites like bbb.org/us/charity, Charity Navigator, or greatnonprofits.org to name a few, and try to find a listing for your charity 3) Join Charity Watch for $50 and see if you can find information on your charity 4) Visit the physical location of the charity (if possible) and check it out in person 5) Be a volunteer for the charity—there’s nothing like looking at a charity from the inside It is great to give generously, to a worthwhile cause!
