Celebrating the art of dance
DANCING INTO SPRING by Debbie Wheeler
Active Lifestyles Magazine is proud to feature St. Louis’ Arts and Entertainment in every issue throughout the year! The month of April celebrates the art form of DANCE throughout The Gateway City with several great events taking place. The Arts is one the things I love most about St. Louis, and the very fact that a great many events are totally FREE. No other city can compare… NOW THAT, my friends, ROCKS! The Grand Arts Center, St. Louis’ vibrant midtown theatre district, will host the annual “National Dance Week St. Louis 2016,” as depicted on our cover with dancer Morgan Cameron, of The Big Muddy Dance Company, from last year’s celebration. This year there will be over 50 dance companies performing “free” at the intersection of Washington and Grand, Saturday, April 23, from 12PM - 5PM. www.nationaldanceweekstl.com Another April event is the annual “Performing For Life” variety show sponsored by Active Lifestyles Magazine. The show raises money for the well-deserved Whole Kids Outreach Organization which works to
address the unmet health and wellness needs of hundreds of families with young children in rural Missouri. Over 150 adult dancers, singers, and musicians throughout St. Louis come together to put on this fabulous event each year. Christine DeHart of Dancing Thru Life, an all adult tap, ballet, and jazz dance studio, is Director and Choreographer of this charity show. Her studio has over 100 women ranging in age from 23 to 78; beginners through professional. The show is set for Saturday, April 16, 2016 with two performances at 2PM and 7PM. The show will be held at the Chesterfield YMCA Performing Arts Theatre, 16464 Burkhardt Place in Chesterfield, Missouri. Tickets are only $15.00 per person and are tax deductable! The Moolah Shrine Circus, which has been a mainstay in St. Louis for decades continues to present some of the finest entertainment under the “Big Top” year after year. Shriners are the men in the “funny red hats” who drive the little yellow cars, dress like clowns, ride horses, march, ride motorcycles, and in general have a great time helping kids. IS YOUR SKIN SEEING RED, WRINKLES OR LINES? by Kellie Salter
What exactly is the cause of more than 17 million Americans red complexions? Are you part of the statistics? When you eat spicy food, drink alcohol, get embarrassed, turn red from heat or sunlight and experience hot flashes due to menopause (men this excludes you), or with aging, you may be suffering from a condition called Rosacea. In addition, women are more than three times more likely to exhibit it than men. Rosacea is characterized by intense and frequent flushing or blotchy redness, the appearance of broken blood vessels on the cheeks, chin, and nose, and in most cases, acnelike pimples. Spring is the time when rosacea can tend to flare up. What is the cause, you might ask? Studies have shown that the mites that live on our skin may be part of the cause, as the mite population peaks in the spring. Although rosacea cannot be cured, there are a number of treatment options available to help keep it under control. Cleanser selection is particularly important, and emulsion-type soap free options are generally best. Look
for physical sunblocks containing zinc oxide because they reflect the light back into the environment rather than absorbing it. In addition, advances in peptide technology have been found to be effective at calming inflammation associated with rosacea. Among rosacea patients with sever symtoms, nearly 70% say the disorder had adversely affected their professional interactions and nearly 30% said they even missed work. Rosacea is not curable but it is treatable. Rodan + Fields Dermatologists have developed a line called Soothe to treat rosacea and help build the lipid barrier in your skin. SOOTHE shields against the biological and environmental aggressors that can trigger inflammation, helps fortify skin’s natural moisture barrier, calms visible redness, and reduces irritation so that you can take comfort in having a healthy-looking complexion every day. Concerned about your fine lines and wrinkles? Looking to reverse sun damage? Are you challenged with sensitive skin or acne? The company has also developed a suite of products
that do just that, layering the right ingredients, in the right formulations and in the right order to provide you with the results you are looking for. I can help you, just give me a call for a free consultation! THE HAIR WHISPERER: SPRINGTIME IS HAIR REGROWTH TIME!
Springtime is annual time for renewal and for rejuvenation. It’s also a great time to rejuvenate your hair. Winter can cause major damage and problems to your hair and scalp. Now would be a great time to assess the health of your hair & scalp. If you are suffering from thinning hair or hair loss, there is a revolutionary new treatment procedure that is sweeping the hair loss industry. It is P.R.P (Platelet Rich Plasma) which is an advanced treatment physicians have used for several years in medical treatments including nerve damage, muscle injury, tendinitis, cardiac muscle injury, bone repair and regeneration. This is a minimally invasive procedure that helps initiate your system’s regenerative process by utilizing the growth factors that platelets

are known to contain. PRP therapy is autologous, meaning it is derived from the patient, therefore reducing the risk of rejection or allergic reaction. The result of treatment is the natural stimulation of growth factors moving towards the treated area. There are no known side effects of PRP, although you may occasionally experience minor swelling or pain near the injection points for a short period of time. This procedure is now being used in the hair loss field. Clinical studies have concluded that PRP can be used to stimulate and nourish follicles for hair growth. Highly concentrated blood plasma contains platelets that release growth factors. These growth factors have been shown to generate new hair and improve the density and health of existing hair. PRP is now being recommended and administered to post-surgical hair transplant recipients to further promote healing and inspire growth. Hair follicles survive on the nutrition received from the blood supply. If you introduce platelets by administering platelet rich plasma (PRP) in the area of damaged hair follicles, the
process amplifies the body’s naturally occurring wound healing mechanism. During the procedure, a small blood sample is drawn from the patient, after which the sample is spun in a centrifuge allowing the sample to separate into its individual components: Red Blood Cells, Platelet Rich Plasma and Buffy Coat. Next, the extracted nutrients from the blood, the platelets that contain plasma, are injected into the treatment area where they release enzymes that promote healing, tissue response and release growth factors that stimulate and enhance hair growth. As a stand-alone treatment, PRP has been shown to help people with male and female pattern hair loss to decelerate hair loss even making fine hair thicker, growing new hair and increasing the density and strength of existing hair. This procedure is beneficial for both men and women experiencing hair loss. The in-office procedure takes about an hour and those who undergo PRP hair therapy may see initial results in up to 90 days and full results in about a year. For most patients, three treatments are recommended for non-surgical
management of hair loss. The hair restoration industry has seen an unprecedented growth in scientific breakthrough’s as well as advancements in technology over the past 15yrs and PRP is just one example of that. Hans Wiemann is excited to be the only Hair Restoration facility in St. Louis to offer PRP for thinning hair and hair loss. Call today to schedule your complementary Hair & Scalp Analysis, to see if PRP is right for you. Scott Gardner Hans Weimann Hair Specialists 1266 Andes Boulevard St. Louis, MO 63132 (314) 721-6657

Volunteer With Your Heart with Heartland Hospice
Everyday people say “I would like to be a part of helping someone” and just don’t know where to start…you can start here! Perhaps you cannot help others financially but you can give of your time and self, which is priceless. Hospice is a special kind of care designed to provide sensitivity and support for people in the final phase of a terminal illness. Heartland Hospice’s goal is to provide palliative and supportive services to meet physical, psychological, social and spiritual needs of patients and their families in a health care facility or other residential settings. Volunteers can provide one-on-one attention to residents who are lonely or cut off from their families, thereby reducing feelings of isolation and contributing to their sense of belonging. Veterans dedicated to visiting with other Veterans are also needed in our hospice care. The benefits are endless when one can make a “DIFFERENCE”. Volunteers are the heart of the Hospice Team. We depend on our Hospice volunteers to help us provide the extra love and care our clients and their families need at this time in their life. Heartland volunteers offer support, companionship and practical, caring help to this special group of people. IT HAPPENED IN ST. LOUIS 50 YEARS AGO…
ELECTRICAL WORKERS RESCUE PIECE OF ST. LOUIS HISTORY
On April 5, 1966, the NHL awarded Sidney Salomon Jr. and his son “Sid” ownership of the new NHL franchise that would become known as the St. Louis Blues. The club would start playing in the 1967-68 season. The city received the new team thanks to an unlikely ally, the owner of the Chicago Blackhawks, Arthur W. Wirtz. Wirtz had lobbied the other NHL owners to accept St. Louis’ bid. Since 1947, Wirtz and a business partner had owned the St. Louis Arena near Hampton Avenue. The Arena was built in 1929 for the annual National Dairy Show. Wirtz was looking for an opportunity to sell and unload the neglected, run-down 37 year-old structure. Wirtz agreed to sponsor Salomon’s St. Louis bid in exchange for their purchase of the Arena as the hockey team’s home. The rest is STL history!

The mortar had slowly washed away from between the courses of brick on the ancient-looking walls of a storefront just northwest of Downtown. Those walls were standing when Sioux Indians had encircled and defeated the Seventh Cavalry in what became known as Custer’s Last Stand. They had housed waves of immigrants building new lives in this country. Through the decades saloons, a Chinese laundry, a Greek restaurant, and a shoe store operated by a Jewish immigrant from Russia had occupied the first floor. The storefront at 2726-28 Dr. Martin Luther King Ave, originally Franklin Avenue, was on the verge of becoming rubble when the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers began a massive effort to save the building. The IBEW is restoring it as the site where their Union was founded in 1891. They are treating this building as a sacred site, salvaging every stone, any piece of the old Pine floor, and any scrap of the past found on the property. Ironically, only a few blocks away a charter school recently demolished historic St. Bridget of Erin Church. The last church built by the Famine Irish, St. Bridget featured unique and exquisite brickwork and was in excellent condition. Meanwhile, the IBEW members were thrilled to find the building on Dr. Martin Luther King, in which the brotherhood had formed, still stood despite decades of neglect. The brotherhood purchased the lone building, once part of a row of mid-19th century buildings, and began the long process of stabilizing it. The IBEW, working with Jamie Henderson of Henderson Associates Architects, Inc., and Sachs Electric, had to take drastic measures to keep the walls of the historic storefront from tumbling down. The leaking roof had resulted in rotting joists, beams and floors. The craftsmen built two story braces to hold the walls in place as they removed rotten wood, rebuilt the floors and roof and tuck pointed the walls. Parts of the pine floor are being refinished and will be reinstalled. Poplar, and hard woods from the joists and beams will be used to build a replica bar for the restored vintage 1891 saloon. John Greb was operating
the saloon on the first floor in 1891 when a line man named Henry Miller was boarding in the second story of 2628 Franklin. The son of Germanimmigrants, Miller was born and raised in Texas. As a teenager, he started as a water boy for the telegraph company. Eventually, he was doing the line work for telegraph and later electrical companies. Like many linemen and wiremen, he had come to St. Louis to work at an Electrical Exposition in 1890 that featured a “glorious display of electrical wonders.” The electrical workers wired booths and decorations. These electrical workers from across the nation shared their stories and experiences – dangerous jobs, often requiring 12 hour workdays exposed to severe weather, minimal pay, and a devastating mortality rate. In some areas the death rate was one out of every two workers hired for a job. A small group of electricians encouraged by Miller chartered a local Electrical Wiremen and Linemen’s Union (No. 5221 of the AFL). They elected Henry Miller as their president. Soon Miller was hitching rides in boxcars to meet with electricians throughout the Midwest to help them establish locals. In 1891, their first convention was called in St. Louis. Ten delegates representing 286 members hammered out a constitution and adopted a logo – a fist holding lightning bolts – in the rooms over John Greb’s Saloon. Miller died a young man in Washington, D.C. in 1896. An electric shock had caused him to fall from a pole. After the fall, he was taken by streetcar to his boarding house in the capitol. Early the next morning he went into a coma and died. But the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, that he helped found in the boarding house on Franklin Avenue, today numbers over 700,000 members. The enthusiastic craftsmen renovating the old storefront and boarding house at 2726-28 Dr. Martin Luther King Avenue express an almost reverence for the site and for Herman Miller. The first secretary of the IBEW, J.T. Kelly wrote of him: “He was generous, unselfish and devoted himself to the task of organizing the electrical workers with an energy that brooked no failure.” While preserving their history and traditions, the Brotherhood is restoring a piece of St. Louis’s lush ethnic heritage. Spring into Travel on a tour!
It is that beautiful time of year when the trees and flowers come back alive and our lives are renewed with energy. Just as the robins begin their return journey back across the land, we also realize that it is time to spread our wings and fly away to new destinations! Travel is proven to be one of the best ways to make your life healthier, happier, stronger and more fullfilled. Actual studies have proven that travel increases well-being,
www.directionstours.com
learning experiences, decreased stress levels, and creates memories of a lifetime. In addition, traveling builds stronger relationships, new friendships and connects people to new ideas and cultures. Vacation and relaxation go hand in hand. When leaving home (or work) and adventuring away from “the norm”, we leave our day to day lives and responsibilities far behind. This allows our bodies to reset our biological body clock and synchronizes us with the earth around us. Notably, studies have shown decreased stress levels in people who travel. Reducing the amount of stress over just one week away on a trip, travelers registered lower levels of stress hormones in their saliva. Limiting our stress, our bodies no longer synchronize with the clock, but instead, with the sunrise and sunset. It is common knowledge that travel brings people together and builds new and everlasting relationships. Whether you travel
alone, with family, or with friends, a vacation get-away improves and forms relationships and friendships. In my 21 years of travel experience, I have taken joy and pleasure in seeing so many new relationships form and grow while adventuring out. One of my greatest joys is introducing single travelers to new people, which ultimately become lifelong friendships. Because of this, I decided to create a more affordable pricing package for single travelers with DIRECTIONS Tours! When traveling as a single, one must pay more money in most cases (due to not spliting hotel costs with a traveling companion / spouse). This leads to higher single supplemental costs and deters many people from traveling alone. So... I went to work with our vendors and negotiated better rates for our single guests. Now, when traveling with DIRECTIONS Tours, single travelers will enjoy our great trips at the same rates of doubles or just a little more. (see details on next page).
By Tod DeHart I am proud to say that we are the ONLY travel company in our region that offers this discount program for single travelers! Worried about traveling alone? Rest assured, you are never “alone” when you are our guests! There are so many great places to explore this Spring and Summer. MACKINAC ISLAND & Lake Michigan Cruise
AUGUST 8 - 13, 2016 (6 Days) $ 1327.00 pp DBL Singles Only $397.00 addtl*
A very popular summertime destination is Mackinac Island, Michigan. As the heat of a St. Louis summer settles in, the cooler days, sparkling lake waters, sandy beaches are a great escape! As the old saying goes, half the fun is in getting there, and this especially holds true when traveling to Mackinac Island. DIRECTIONS Tours offers a unique and exciting way going and coming to Mackinac. Our tour travels to the historic small city of Manitowoc, Wisconsin. This city is located on Lake Michigan at the mouth of the Manitowoc River and once boasted a great industry of shipbuilding. This heritage is reflected throughout the town which sits along the Manitowoc River and is truly a delight to visit. It is here we will board the legendary SS Badger. The Badger is a passenger and vehicle ferry that shuttles between Manitowoc, Wisconsin and Ludington, Michigan. She is the last coal fired passenger vessel operating on the Great Lakes and it is quite special to have the opportunity to take this sixty mile, four hour trip across Lake Michigan. The ferry saves travelers three and a half hours of travel time compared to the 411 mile drive from Manitowoc to Ludington via Chicago. There is plenty entertainment onboard the ferry including bingo, movies, gift shop, food and more. Traverse City is found just a short two hour drive from Ludington and is one of our favorite small towns in Michigan. Voted one of
Tour Highlights include:
the 10 Best Small Towns in America by Fodor’s, Traverse City is a true delight anytime of the year. Here you will find breathtaking natural beauty, up market boutiques, incredible restaurants, lovely wineries, and great local microbreweries. Traverse City is the largest producer of tart cherries in the United States and every year during the first week of July the city hosts the National Cherry Festival, attracting 500,000 visitors! The journey from Traverse City to Mackinaw City is a two hour drive and is visually stunning. The glistening waters, lakeside homes, and gorgeous landscape are a joy to behold. Traveling through the vacation destination of Charlevoix is a delight, as there is a drawbridge to be traversed and here there is the pleasure to be had of seeing yacht after yacht ply these beautiful waters. Mackinaw City is where we board the passenger ferry over to Mackinac Island. This is such a beautiful crossing of Lake Huron, indoor seating or for those who love the wind in their hair, there is outdoor seating atop the ferry for the twenty minute crossing. It is always a great pleasure to approach Mackinac Island, as she is a gem to gaze upon from the waters. Welcome to Mackinac Island! There are no motorized vehicles allowed on the pristine 3.8 mile island. Mackinac Island served as a strategic point for the Great Lakes fur trade and later the British established Fort Mackinac on the island during the
American Revolutionary War. The Fort still stands today and is open for tours which include costumed docents and battle recreations. Mackinac Island first became a popular summer resort destination for the very wealthy in the late 19th century and the entire island is now listed as a National Historic
air! Mackinac Island has been the setting of two feature films: This Time for Keeps, starring Esther Williams, in 1946 and Somewhere in Time, which was filmed at the Grand Hotel (pictured above) in 1979 and starred both Christopher Reeves and Jane Seymour. The Grand Hotel
Landmark. Travelers are wooed by the architecture, gardens, galleries, restaurants, history, natural beauty, and the eight mile bicycling trail that follows the island’s perimeter. Downtown streets are filled with fudge shops and tourists are known as “fudgies!” The natural beauty of the island is best experienced by horsedrawn carriage. Narrated carriage tours are always a highlight as the horses make their way through the heavily wooded areas, past the fort, and over to a scenic lookout of a natural carved arch that overlooks the water. The lilacs that drench the island are thick and sweetly scent the
opened in 1887 and was a summer retreat for vacationers who arrived by lake steamers from Chicago, Erie, Montreal, and Detroit. Our next two nights will be at the fabulous Grand Hotel! The Grand Hotel’s front porch, the longest in the world, became a principal meeting place for all of Mackinac Island in the 1890’s. Today, guests enjoy rocking on the Adirondack chairs that line the massive porch while gazing out past manicured gardens. There are 386 guest rooms, none of which are alike. Join us on this truly special experience!

SHOULD YOU CHANGE YOUR INVESTMENT MIX OVER TIME? by Jeff Ponte, Edward Jones Advisor
To be successful at investing, some people think they need to “get in on the ground floor” of the next “big thing.” However, instead of waiting for that one “hot” stock that may never come along, consider creating an asset allocation – a mix of investments – that’s appropriate for your needs, goals and risk tolerance. But once you have such a mix, should you keep it intact forever, or will you need to make some changes? And if so, when? To begin with, why is asset allocation important? Different types of investments – growth stocks, incomeproducing stocks, international stocks, bonds, government securities, real estate investment trusts, and so on – have unique characteristics, so they rarely rise or fall at the same time. Thus, owning a mix of investments can help reduce the forces of market volatility. (Keep in mind, though, that allocation does not ensure a profit or protect against loss.) Your particular mix will
depend on your investment time horizon, comfort with risk, and financial goals. When you are young, and starting out in your career, you may want your asset allocation to be more heavily weighted toward stocks and stockbased investments. Stock investments historically have provided the greatest returns over the long term – although, as you’ve probably heard, past performance can’t guarantee future results – and you will need this growth potential to help achieve your long-term goals, such as a comfortable retirement. Stocks also carry a greater degree of investment risk, including the risk of losing principal, but when you have many years to invest, you have time to potentially overcome the inevitable short-term declines. Once you reach the middleto-later stages of your career, you may have achieved some of your goals that required wealth accumulation, such as sending your children to college. However, what is likely your biggest long-
term goal – retirement – still awaits you, so you may not want to scale back too much on your stocks and other growthoriented investments. Nonetheless, including an allocation to bonds can help to reduce some of the volatility of the stock portion of your portfolio. Now, fast forward to just a few years before you retire. At this point, you may want to lower your overall risk level, because, with retirement looming, you don’t have much time to bounce back from downturns – and you don’t want to start withdrawing from your retirement accounts when your portfolio is already going down. So, now may be the time to add bonds and other fixed-income investments. Again, though, you still need some growth opportunities from your investments – after all, you could be retired for two, or even three decades. Finally, you’re retired. At this point, you should adjust your asset allocation to include enough incomeproducing investments – bonds,
certificates of deposit, perhaps dividendpaying stocks – to help you enjoy the retirement lifestyle you’ve envisioned. Yet, you can’t forget that the cost of living will likely rise throughout your retirement. In fact, at a modest 3% inflation rate, the price of goods will more than double after 25 years. So even during retirement, you need your portfolio to provide some growth potential to help you avoid losing purchasing power. By being aware of your asset allocation, and by making timely adjustments as necessary, you can provide yourself with the opportunities for growth and income that you will need throughout your life. USE YOUR HOME TO STAY AT HOME by Kevin E. Kohler, Reverse Specialist
Meet Cindy, age 89. Cindy’s family contacted me to inquire about a reverse mortgage. Their father, her husband, recently passed away at the age of 88. The family’s immediate concern became how their mother was going to be taken care of. Her own pension
and social security income is sufficient to get her through the day to day expenses. However, the family expressed concern over her declining health and the costs it would take to pay for in-home care when the time comes. Cindy is adamant, for sentimental reasons, that under no circumstances, does she want to leave her home and move into an assisted living facility. After a couple initial meetings to educate the family about the reverse mortgage product, we proceeded to look at some options available to Cindy. Her home is worth about $175,000, and she has a current Home Equity Loan with a balance of about $63,000, and payments of about $350 per month. Given her age and value of the home, and with paying off the mortgage, we found that Cindy would have approximately $56,000 of available equity that she could access.
Immediately, this would help with eliminating a $350 monthly payment, as the reverse mortgage never requires her to make a payment. In reviewing her options, we determined that her two best options would be to establish a line of credit with the $56,000, or she could elect to have monthly annuitized payments sent to her. Cindy elected to choose the line of credit, as that option allows the line of credit to grow as the home appreciates in value. That way, she could have additional equity available to her, when the time comes that costs of in-home care start. The family was also very relieved to understand that when the time comes of their mother’s passing, they can choose whether they want to sell the home themselves, and use those proceeds to pay off the reverse mortgage, retaining any equity that remains above and beyond the payoff amount. Or, they could sign the home over to the lender, and allow the lender to sell the property, but still any remaining equity is given to the family. The large
protection being that if their mother would live considerably longer, and the balance of the reverse mortgage were ever to exceed the value of the home, the family could assign the home to the lender, and FHA absorbs the loss if the home can’t be sold for the balance of the reverse mortgage. While very sad for the circumstance of losing a beloved family husband and father, it is wonderful that Cindy’s family is being very proactive to ensure their mother is set up financially for her future. Harboring sorrow and grief, it was truly a pleasure being able to see some relief on her face that there was one less thing to worry about.

EATING RIGHT FOR A HEALTHY WEIGHT
Reaching and maintaining a healthier weight contributes to your overall health and well being. Losing even a few pounds or preventing further weight gain has health benefits. Are you ready to make changes in your lifestyle and move toward a healthier weight? Here are some tips to get you started. Start with a plan for lifelong health. Focus on the big picture - achieving overall good health - not just short-term weight loss. Set healthy, realistic goals. You are more likely to succeed in reaching realistic goals when you make changes step-by-step. Start with one or two specific, small changes at a time. Track your progress by keeping a food and activity log. Get a personalized eating plan. For a plan that will give you the amounts of each food group you need daily. If you have special dietary needs, consult a registered dietitian for a customized plan. go to: www.ChooseMyPlate.gov
Eat at least three meals a day and plan your meals ahead of time. Whether you’re eating at home, packing a lunch or eating out, an overall eating plan for the day will help keep you on track. Balance your plate with a variety of foods. Half your plate should be filled with fruits and vegetables, about one fourth with lean meat, poultry or fish, and one fourth with grains. To round out your meal, add fat-free or low-fat milk, yogurt or cheese.
Focus on your food. Pick one place to sit down and eat at home. Eating while doing other things may lead to eating more than you think. Also, switching from a large plate to a smaller one may help you feel satisfied with reduced portions.
F

Start your meal with low calorie foods like fruits, vegetables and salads. These foods are packed with nutrients your body needs.
Know when you’ve had enough to eat. Quit before you feel full or stuffed. It takes about 20 minutes for your brain to get the message that your body is getting food. When your brain gets this message, you stop feeling hungry. So, fast eaters - slow down and give your brain a chance to get the word. Get plenty of fiber from fruits, vegetables, beans and whole grains. Fiber can help you feel full longer and lower your risk for heart disease and type 2 diabetes. Watch portion sizes to manage your calorie intake. This is the key to an effective weight management plan. To make sure your portion sizes are “just right,” visit the MyPlate Food Groups Food Galleries for healthy eating guidelines in household measures. go to: www.choosemyplate.gov/STEPS/ howmuchshouldyoueat.html
Snack smart. Include snacks as part of your daily calorie allowance and limit portions to one serving. Plan for nutritious snacks to prevent between-meal hunger. Keep portable, healthy snacks in your desk, backpack or car. Find your balance between food and physical activity. Regular physical activity is important for your overall health and fitness - plus, it helps control body weight, promotes a feeling of well-being and reduces the risk of chronic diseases. Pick activities you like and do each for at least 10 minutes at a time. Aim for a total of 2 hours and 30 minutes or more each week of moderate activity such as brisk walking. If you are currently inactive, check with your doctor concerning increased physical activity. Choose a weight management plan right for you. A registered dietitian nutritionist can develop a personalized weight management plan that meets your individual needs. FOSTERS TO THE RESCUE... MEET JAKE, THE NEWFIE by Barbi Click, Newfie Parent
For some crazy reason, we decided we needed another Newfoundland, “Newfie” for short. Blame it on stress; blame it on grief. Our big black Newfie, Jak, had died at the age of ten about a year and a half before and we were missing him terribly. All our dogs are rescues. So we started looking at Newfie rescues. “Zeus’” picture popped up in my email inbox. He was a brown Newfie that had been rescued from a breeder. He was fifteen months old, and BIG! We made all the arrangements to foster him for a little while before actually adopting him. We went to pick him up. The temporary foster had him
in a horse stall in her barn. He was matted, covered in straw bits, and wild. Getting into the back of our minivan was not his idea of a good time. With the help of the foster, and the two of us, we pushed/pulled him into the van. For the first 24 hours he was with us, he paced or stood the entire time. He did not know what to do inside of a house. Having been raised in an outdoor pen, he had no social skills. I leave it to the imagination what that means. One of the first things we did was to brush and cut out all the mats. The second thing we did was to rename him Jake. Zeus just wasn’t working. He weighed 127 when we first got him and he was underweight. He did not like a collar around his neck nor did he like the lead rope attached. Now, after two classes of obedience training, he knows what “No, Leave it!” means. He understands “Wait” – he doesn’t like it but he will do it. He sits, lies down, and waits to be greeted on command. His weight is 137+/-. He has grown at least one inch in height.
He is a very big boy and possibly has a bit more to grow over the next year. Sounds like a lot, doesn’t it? It is, but Newfies are one of the best dogs ever. They are by nature full of love. They are loyal, patient, and protective but not threatening – except for a huge bark that used to scare the dickens out of our mail carrier. They love little people and seem to understand the need to be careful when around them. They want only to be loved. They have been called “Nanny” dogs because of their loving care. But if you are thinking about how great it would be to have a big old hunk of burning love like our Jake, think long and hard. And do your research. Newfies are very big animals (remember the horse stall?). They love to run. And to splash through mud. And snow… Jake loves snow. Most of all, they drool. Maybe you have seen the movie Turner and Hooch? Or Beethoven? Remember the parts in slow motion when the dogs are shaking their heads and slobber slings everywhere? Newfies are not like that. They
are worse. They are water dogs and have large loose jowls that allow the water to siphon out of their mouths as they save people in the water. Those same jowls hold a lot of slobber that can be slung to great heights. In fact, Newfie owners brag about how high and far their Newf can sling their drool. And did I talk about shedding? Well, maybe in another story. But check it out when you are doing your research. Many Newfies are famous and are heroes. And then there is Jake. He is just a big old boy who has no idea that he weighs almost 140 pounds and is nearly too big for our little Scion xB. The fact that he can rest his chin on the table, to him just means that he can get closer to us. When he wants attention, he lifts his paw as if to try to grab your hand… just because he wants to hold it. He just wants to be loved…is that so bad? Mainly do your reseach. It is important. It is a heart we are talking about... a great big heart ful of love. Check out www.newfrescue.com or www.riverkingnewfs.com
AS WE LIVE LONGER, SO DO OUR PETS!
• The first is to make sure your dog gets plenty of exercise and is not overweight. Much like humans, an overweight elderly dog will not cope as well with conditions common in older pets such as arthritis.
P
aws
Man’s best friend is living longer than ever. This is due to our beloved canines’ increased status as family member and families becoming conscientious about providing their dogs’ appropriate veterinary care. As a result, we are faced with a variety of health care issues as they age. No matter which health issue you and your elderly dog may be dealing with, there are several components of good pet care you may wish keep in mind.
• The second is to provide proper nutrition for the elderly dog. Older dogs do not need the same amount of calories as a younger dog. The older dog slows down a bit and, therefore, should consume fewer calories per day. Depending upon the specific issues facing your elderly dog, you may need to add some supplements to your dog’s meals. Supplements such as glucosamine can be very helpful for elderly dogs with sore joints.
which will be helpful for them to learn. • Fourth, note that old dogs can and should learn new tricks! Keeping your elderly dog engaged mentally stimulates them and provides another outlet for their spirit as their physical abilities decline. As a dog owner, you are most familiar with your dog’s strengths. You are able to create games and tricks which help them use their strengths and challenge them in areas where they are not as strong. For ideas, the internet is a vast resource!
• Third, be aware of changes in your dog’s behavior. These may include variations in food and water intake and elimination, as well as emotional changes such as lethargy. You are the expert on your pet and know best how (s) he behaves when (s)he is feeling good. Make note of subtle events as such as walking into a room and realizing Spanky doesn’t seem to hear you as well as she did; this could be the start of hearing loss. This is common for dogs, as is some diminished sight capacity. Your challenge as the dog owner is to figure out how to best accommodate your dog’s reduced sensory capabilities. Do you need to change your environment to make sure your dog is safe? For the sight impaired dog, a baby gate over a stairway would prevent an accident. For the hearing impaired dog, many simple commands such as “sit,” “stay,” and “stop” have sign language equivalents
• Fifth, veterinarians now recommend that elderly dogs receive checkups every six months. Keep rigorously to this schedule and you will be better able to handle any health issues which may arise. If you do suspect something is wrong with your pet, do not delay in acting. No matter what the health issue, the earlier your pet is seen by the vet, the better chance of proper diagnosis and treatment.
• Sixth, be resourceful. Be aware of not only traditional veterinary solutions for your pet, but also investigate possible holistic alternatives such as acupuncture and herbal medicine. Do make sure any professional practicing these techniques has been appropriately licensed and accredited. If you choose to combine traditional veterinary solutions and holistic solutions for treatment of your pet, make sure each veterinarian with whom you are working understands what
the other is doing. Traditional medicine and holistic medicine treatments may not always complement each other. Full disclosure with each vet is very important. • Seventh, make sure your pet as comfortable as possible. As the aging pet has become a new demographic among pet supply stores, there are more products available to help owners keep their pets comfortable. Items range from ramps for those dogs not able to use stairs to special orthopedic beds for dogs with arthritis. Ultimately, there will come a time when your pet is no longer comfortable. It is the final responsibility of the owner to decide when your pet’s quality of life has declined to a point where pet euthanasia is absolutely the right thing to do. This decision is difficult and it is the time our pets need us the most. This is not an easy decision to make, but owners should be comforted by the fact they are acting humanely and in the best interest of their pet. Kaci
Kaci is a 9 month old Beagle/Shepherd mix. She is very loving and affectionate and is eager to please. She learns new skills quickly, especially when there are treats involved. Her favorite games are playing fetch with her tennis balls or a good game of tug of war. She is great with other dogs and cats. She would do best in a home with older children. Kaci is high energy and would love an active family. A fenced in yard or daily and nightly long walks would work best. Kaci is house and crate trained. She also knows sit, shake, down and high-five.
She is a little 3 yr old, Chihuahua Mix with big, beautiful eyes. She is shy at first, but will show you her sweet, outgoing personality and loves to be with her people. Always by your side, a great companion, close for cuddles and belly rubs. She gets along with other dog, running, playing and wrestling with them. She is learning “sit” and that “Ah Ah” means NO. She is crate trained.

Foxy Mama is a 22 lb, 3-1/2 yr old Jack Russell Terrier/Border Collie Mix. Foxy was rescued as a feral dog; meaning she had no experience with humans. She has made great strides but still needs an experienced adopter who is very patient. She is curious and food motivated and does walk on a leash. She will need to be adopted to a family with no children, but with another well socialized dog. Foxy Mama is capable of love, but she is a “Special Case” and would need the right forever home for her.
BECOME A PET’S FOSTER PARENT
Needy Paws Rescue of St Louis, is a 100% volunteer foster-based 501(c)3 organization, saving dogs at high kill shelters, strays, abandoned or owner surrendered. All of our rescued dogs are placed in approved inspected foster homes while waiting for their Forever Family. Needy Paws Rescue receives requests to save dogs every day and it is very hard to decide which dogs to save and those that have to be
left behind. We don’t want to leave any behind, but can only rescue when foster homes are available. We need More Foster Homes. Please help us by being a FOSTER PARENT to a rescued dog. It is such a rewarding opportunity. You supply your Home and your Love. NPR covers expenses, providing you with food, treats, collars, leashes, beds, crates and any other items needed to care for your foster dog. Please consider Fostering a dog and preparing him/her to be adopted to a forever family. Go to www.needypaws.org, fill out a Foster Application and you’ll be on your way to saving a dog’s life. For more information on becoming a foster parent,
