Saint Louis is Hummin

let’s swing into music In the words of a legend: “If you tried to give rock and roll another name, you might call it Chuck Berry” - John Lennon

by Debbie Wheeler Music roots run deep in Saint Louis, which has long been a hot spot for great ragtime, jazz, blues and rock and roll artists. And lest not we forget... classical. The Saint Louis Symphony Orchestra, founded in 1880, is the second oldest U.S. symphony, after the New York Philharmonic. Many legendary artists have started in Saint Louis, and some still grace the stage today. Greats such as Chuck Berry, Barbara Streisand, Tina Turner, Josephine Baker, Michael McDonald, and the list goes on and on. Today, many beloved genres of music can be heard live throughout the gateway city on any given night. Featured on this month’s cover is the jumpin’ and jivin’ Miss Jubilee and the Humdingers. Miss Jubilee has been entertaining audiences around Saint Louis and beyond since the beginning of 2007 with their exciting blend of authentic

Hot Jazz, Swing, Rhythm & Blues and R’n’R spanning the 1920’s-1950’s. Fronted by a high energy female vocalist and backed up by a swingin’ horn fueled rhythm section, Miss Jubilee is a favorite among Swing Dancers and fans of all ages who enjoy uplifting and energetic music! Their incredible sound and unique style can be heard at many venues throughout Saint Louis. Join Miss Jubilee and the band this Mother’s Day for a Jazz Brunch at Evangeline’s Bistro in the Central West End. For more details on the Humdingers’ schedule, visit www.missjubilee.com Another popular band right now in the STL is the jazz and blues sound of The Gaslight Squares. Named after Saint Louis’ famous music district, this young and upcoming band entertains crowds with their exciting sounds of the big jazz, blues, and ragtime era. I happened to run into this

great group of fella’s (see photo below) outside of a popular local music venue this last weekend after dancing the “night away” at the famous Casa Loma in South Saint Louis. It just so happens that you too will have the opportunity to tap your feet to this groups traditional music on November 2nd when Active Lifestyles Magazine joins Directions Tours for a morning performance at the historic Sheldon Theatre in Grand Center. If you are interested in joining us, call (314) 577-0077 for the day trip details. Our city is filled with great lounges, ballrooms and theatres featuring artists of today and yesterday. Neighborhoods and Districts like The Loop, Soulard, Cherokee, Laclede’s Landing, Washington Avenue, Maplewood and Grand Center in Midtown are just a few known for their music scenes.

On a last note, the legendary 60’s band Chicago, was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland last month. On May 25th, the Peabody Opera House will present “An Evening With Chicago”. From the signature sound of the Chicago horns, their iconic Vocalists, and a few dozen of ever-Classic Songs, this band’s concerts are celebrations. This year marks the band’s 49th consecutive year of touring, without missing a single concert date! If you are interested in tickets, call Ticketmaster Ticket Centers (800) 745-3000, or online at ticketmaster.com Until next month... Be Well, Be Active and Live Life to it’s fullest my firends; St. Louis Lifesyles ARE better after 50!

ARMY

COAST GUARD

Army Day can be traced back to a littleknown Defense Test Day, which was observed only twice: once in 1924 and once in 1925. Congress then disallowed any further observances of this day. In response, the Military Order of the World War under Colonel Thatcher Luquer established Army Day. Army Day was first celebrated on May 1, 1928. That date was chosen in hopes of dampening Communists’ celebration of Workers’ Day, which also occurs on May 1. But, starting in 1929, Army Day was changed to April 6, the anniversary date of the United States’ entry into World War I. Army Day was established as a nationwide observance to draw public attention to national defense and to acquaint the public with Army activities. In addition, the day was used to stress the need for military preparedness, which the nation had lacked as it entered earlier major conflicts. “The failure to make adequate preparation for the inevitable struggle, the consequent suffering from disease and death entailed upon the armies which were hastily raised, the prolongation of the conflict far beyond the time which sufficient and equipped forces would have required for victory, and the heavy costs of reconstruction” were caused by the lack of preparation of the nation. On April 4, 1936, President Roosevelt issued a proclamation that Army Day be recognized by Congress as April 6 and observed nationwide. On March 1, 1937, Congress passed Resolution 5-75 which officially recognized Army Day

Army Day was last observed nationally on April 6, 1949.

NAVY

Navy Day was established on October 27, 1922 by the Navy League of the United States. Although it was not a national holiday, Navy Day received special attention from President Warren Harding. Harding wrote to the Secretary of the Navy Edwin Denby: “Thank you for your note which brings assurance of the notable success which seems certain to attend the celebration of Navy Day on Friday, October 27, in commemoration of past and present services of the Navy. From our earliest national beginnings the Navy has always been, and deserved to be, an object of special pride to the American people. Its record is indeed one to inspire such sentiments, and I am very sure that such a commemoration as is planned will be a timely reminder.” “It is well for us to have in mind that under a program of lessening naval armaments there is a greater reason for maintaining the highest efficiency, fitness and morale in this branch of the national defensive service. I know how earnestly the Navy personnel are devoted to this idea and want you to be assured of my hearty concurrence.” October 27 was suggested by the Navy League to recognize Theodore Roosevelt’s birthday. Roosevelt had been an Assistant Secretary of the Navy and supported a strong Navy as well as the idea of Navy Day. In addition, October 27 was the anniversary of a 1775 report issued by a special committee of the Continental Congress favoring the purchase of merchant ships as the foundation of an American Navy. Navy Day was last observed on Oct. 27, 1949.

AIR FORCE

Air Force Day was established on August 1, 1947, by President Truman “in recognition of the personnel of the victorious Army Air Forces and all those who have developed and maintained our nation’s air strength.” August 1 was chosen to mark the 40th anniversary of the establishment, in 1907, of the Aeronautical Division in the Office of the Chief Signal Officer of the Army. Air Force Day came into being immediately after the signing of the National Security Act of 1947, although the status of the air element of the military was uncertain. Thus, although it was called Air Force Day, its first celebration was staged by the Army Air Forces and not by the U.S. Air Force. Underlying the Air Force Day celebration was a need to increase “both official and public awareness of the priority of importance of air forces in any system of national security,” according to Mr. Truman. “The great strategic fact of our generation is that the United States now possesses live frontiers -- the frontiers of the air -- and that the oceans are no longer sure ramparts against attack.” In his message to the nation on the first Air Force Day, Mr. Truman said, “I remind all of our citizens that the air power of the nation is essential to the preservation of our liberty, and that the continued development of the science of air transportation is vital to the trade and commerce of a peaceful world.” Air Force Day was last observed on August 4, 1949

“August 4 is celebrated as Coast Guard Day to honor the establishment on that day in 1790 of the Revenue Cutter Service, forebear of today’s Coast Guard, by the Treasury Department. On that date, Congress, guided by Secretary of the Treasury Alexander Hamilton; the 1790 Tariff Act President George Washington signed into law, authorized the building of a fleet of ten cutters, whose responsibility would be enforcement of the first tariff laws enacted by Congress under the Constitution. The Coast Guard has been continuously at sea since its inception, although the name Coast Guard didn’t come about until 1915 when the Revenue Cutter Service was merged with the Lifesaving Service. The Lighthouse Service joined the Coast Guard in 1939, followed in 1946 by the Bureau of Navigation and Steamboat Inspection. Then in 1967, after 177 years in the Treasury Department, the Coast Guard was transferred to a newly formed Department of Transportation. Finally, on March 1, 2003, the Coast Guard was transferred to the Department of Homeland Security. Coast Guard Day is primarily an internal activity for active duty Coast Guard personnel, civilian members, reservists, retirees, auxiliarists, and dependents, but it does have a significant share of interest outside the Service. Grand Haven, Michigan, also known as Coast Guard City, USA, annually sponsors the Coast Guard Festival around August 4. Typically it is the largest community celebration of a branch of the Armed Forces in the nation. In addition to celebrating their own day every year, Coast Guard members also participate as equal partners in Armed Forces Day activities.”

MARINES The United States Marine Corps was established on November 10, 1775, to augment naval forces in the Revolutionary War. The recruiting headquarters was set up by Capt. Samuel Nicholas in the Tun Tavern on Water Street in Philadelphia, which is considered to be the birthplace of the Marines. After success in many campaigns, the Corps was abolished at the close of the Revolutionary War for reasons of economy. On July 11, 1798, Congress ordered the creation of the Corps, named it the United States Marine Corps and directed that it be available for service under the Secretary of the Navy. The Corps celebrated its birthday, or Marine Corps Day, on July 11 from 1799 until 1921 when the date was permanently changed to November 10 to commemorate the establishment of the Corps to aid in the Revolutionary War. The day is still observed by U. S. Marines worldwide. Special exhibits, parades, drill team performances, and speeches typically mark the occasion. The Birthday Ball, which culminates in the cutting of the birthday cake, is held that evening in Washington, D.C. It is not possible to determine precisely when the first cake ceremony was held, but the first on record took place at Marine Barracks, Washington, D.C., in 1937. Major General Thomas Holcomb, the Commandant, presided at an open house for Marine Corps officers, including the cutting of a huge cake in the shape of Tun Tavern.

KEEP YOUR HANDS LOOKING YOUNG ALL YEAR by Kellie Salter

Hands can be a dead giveaway of your age. Look at how young Madonna and Sarah Jessica Parker look. You might think that they are in their 30’s. However, have you ever thought to look at their hands? It might be like looking at something from Tales of the Crip. Our hands are among the hardest working and most environmentally vulnerable parts of our bodies. And if you are like most people, you probably ignore them. Until one day, you look down and notice the brown spots, crepiness, prominent vessels, wrinkles, dryness and thin skin. So many of us work on reversing the brown spots and discoloration on our face, yet we forget about our hands. Treat your hands the same way you treat your face. The key is a combination of exfoliation to lift the dead cells, a lightning and brightening system containing hydroquinone, and diligent sun protection. I recommend Rodan and Fields Dermatologists clinically proven Reverse for the brown spots and the Redefine Brightening Hand Treatment and Hand Balm SPF 30 for the crepiness, the lines and wrinkles, and to improve the elasticity

and resiliency. The sun is beating down on our hands while we drive, play a round of golf, or go for a bike ride or walk. It’s important to protect them just as you would other areas of your body. A little preventive care goes a long way. For deeper, tougher pigment, a dermatologist can perform mild peels or laser treatments in conjunction with a topical program. There are even some individuals who have fillers injected into their hands to build up volume. You may also be wondering if it’s normal for your nails to chip and crack as you age. Our nails are an extension of your skin. With age, our nails naturally become drier, more brittle, and fragile, and oftentimes even peel at the ends. This is a common part of aging. However, you can minimize these common problems by keeping your hands and nails moisturized and hydrated. Your best defense is to apply a heavy moisturizer to your hands throughout the day, with special attention to your cuticles. THE HAIR WHISPERER: SIX CAN’T MISS SUMMER SKIN-CARE TIPS!

The joys of summer are numerous, from swimming to barbecues and fireworks, there’s so much to enjoy about summer that it’s easy to forget what it does to your skin. Sun damage ages the skin, causes wrinkles and increases risk of sun cancer. Combine these with burns and irritations linked to summer activities, and you’ll see why it is important to practice these 6-skin care tips! 1. Exfoliate for clearer, smoother skin: Exfoliation removes dead, dulling skin debris to prevent congestion and improve hydration from toners and moisturizers. The best time of the day to exfoliate is in the morning prior to toner, moisturizer, SPF (Sun Protection Factor) and makeup application. After you exfoliate, follow with a hydrating body cream to seal in moisture, and always shield freshly exfoliated skin with SPF.

W

ellness

by Scott Gardner

Tip: Makeup will last longer on exfoliated skin. 2. Keep Skin Hydrated: Up your regimen’s level of hydration with intensive masques, perfect for use one to two times a week. Skin hydrating boosters relieves dryness and fine lines. Help lift moisture levels and minimize fine lines, and work best when layered underneath moisturizer. Toners are a refreshing moisturizer prep, working to even out skin porosity. Tip: Refresh with revitalizing toner spritz at your desk, in the car, at the gym, and on the plane. 3. Make Friends with H2o: Higher temperatures and more time outdoors leads to internal dehydration, which can result in headaches and dizzy spells. Drink Eight 8-ounce glasses of plain, filtered water every day to help maintain critical moisture balance of the body and skin, and assist in detoxification. Tip: If you drink caffeinated beverages, you must triple the amount of water you drink. 4. When in Doubt, Apply (and reapply!): It’s not enough to just apply sunscreen; you must apply enough, and apply frequently. Studies indicate that most people do not apply nearly as much daylight protection as they should. Apply about a teaspoon worth to the face. For

the body, about as much as would fill a shot glass. Re-apply every two hours. Today’s sophisticated formulas and technology let you select sun protection that works with your skin condition. That means you can choose oil-free, mattifying formulas, extra emollient formulas for dry skin, or chemical free formulas for sensitized, reactive skin. Tip: Stay out of the midday sun from midmorning to late afternoon whenever you can. 5. Soothe Over-Exposed Skin: You forgot the sunscreen, didn’t apply enough, or got caught in a sunny spell. Unfortunately, the damage is done, but you don’t have to suffer in pain! Supersoothing botanicals and cooling gels can help prevent peeling and reduce redness and inflammation. Apply cooling balms generously over-exposed skin, preferably at the first sight of a pink glow. Tip: One blistering sunburn doubles your risk of melanoma…. remember to get a yearly skin exam by a doctor and perform self-examination once a month to detect early warning signs of carcinomas and malignant melanoma. Look for a new growth or any skin change. 6. Repair and Treat Sun Damage: UV light causes photo aging in the form of brown spots, coarse skin

and wrinkles, whether you have burned your skin or not. When sunlight comes in contact with skin a cascade of damage results (including the stripping of barrier lipids) causing inflammation, production of reactive oxygen molecules that affect healthy cell growth, and stimulation of collagen destructing enzymes. A tan may be a popular summer look, but it indicates damage. Bombard your skin with age fighting ingredients such as a multivitamin recovery masque and skin firming cream to help undo any damage that may occur, and to further protect it from the aging effects of UV. Tip: Since you are now making sure that you are taking care of your skin during the summer months, you should also make sure that you are protecting and nourishing your hair with clinically formulated Gen-Tecs Volumizing Glycolic Shampoo & Gen-Tecs Volumizing Conditioner, available exclusively at Hans Wiemann. Spring into Travel on a tour!

It is that beautiful time of year when the trees and flowers come back alive and our lives are renewed with energy. Just as the robins begin their return journey back across the land, we also realize that it is time to spread our wings and fly away to new destinations! Travel is proven to be one of the best ways to make your life healthier, happier, stronger and more fullfilled. Actual studies have proven that travel increases well-being,

learning experiences, decreased stress levels, and creates memories of a lifetime. In addition, traveling builds stronger relationships, new friendships and connects people to new ideas and cultures. Vacation and relaxation go hand in hand. When leaving home (or work) and adventuring away from “the norm”, we leave our day to day lives and responsibilities far behind. This allows our bodies to reset our biological body clock and synchronizes us with the earth around us. Notably, studies have shown decreased stress levels in people who travel. Reducing the amount of stress over just one week away on a trip, travelers registered lower levels of stress hormones in their saliva. It is common knowledge that travel brings people together and builds new and everlasting relationships. Whether you travel alone, with family, or with friends, a vacation get-away improves and forms relationships and friendships. In my 21 years of travel experience,

I have taken joy and pleasure in seeing so many new relationships form and grow while adventuring out. One of my greatest joys is introducing single travelers to new people, which ultimately become lifelong friendships. Because of this, I decided to create a more affordable pricing package for single travelers with DIRECTIONS Tours! When traveling as a single, one must pay more money in most cases (due to not spliting hotel costs with a traveling companion / spouse). This leads to higher single supplemental costs and deters many people from traveling alone. So... I went to work with our vendors and negotiated better rates for our single guests. Now, when traveling with DIRECTIONS Tours, single travelers will enjoy our great trips at the same rates of doubles or just a little more. (see details on next page). I am proud to say that we are the ONLY travel company in our region that offers this discount program for single travelers!

MACKINAC ISLAND & Lake Michigan Cruise

AUGUST 15 - 20, 2016 (6 Days) Added $ 1327.00 pp DBL Singles Only $397.00 addtl* A very popular summertime destination is Mackinac Island, Michigan. As the heat of a St. Louis summer settles in, the cooler days, sparkling lake waters, sandy beaches are a great escape! As the old saying goes, half the fun is in getting there, and this especially holds true when traveling to Mackinac Island. DIRECTIONS Tours offers a unique and exciting way going and coming to Mackinac. Our tour travels to the historic small city of Manitowoc, Wisconsin. This city is located on Lake Michigan at the mouth of the Manitowoc River and once boasted a great industry of shipbuilding. This heritage is reflected throughout the town which sits along the Manitowoc River and is truly a delight to visit. It is here we will board the legendary SS Badger. The Badger is a passenger and vehicle ferry that shuttles between Manitowoc, Wisconsin and Ludington, Michigan. She is the last coal fired passenger vessel operating on the Great Lakes and it is quite special to have the opportunity to take this sixty mile, four hour trip across Lake Michigan. The ferry saves travelers three and a half hours of travel time compared to the 411 mile drive from Manitowoc to Ludington via Chicago. There is plenty entertainment onboard the ferry including bingo, movies, gift shop, food and more. Traverse City is found just a short two hour drive from Ludington and is one of our favorite small towns in Michigan. Voted one of

Tour Highlights include:

the 10 Best Small Towns in America by Fodor’s, Traverse City is a true delight anytime of the year. Here you will find breathtaking natural beauty, up market boutiques, incredible restaurants, lovely wineries, and great local microbreweries. Traverse City is the largest producer of tart cherries in the United States and every year during the first week of July the city hosts the National Cherry Festival, attracting 500,000 visitors! The journey from Traverse City to Mackinaw City is a two hour drive and is visually stunning. The glistening waters, lakeside homes, and gorgeous landscape are a joy to behold. Traveling through the vacation destination of Charlevoix is a delight, as there is a drawbridge to be traversed and here there is the pleasure to be had of seeing yacht after yacht ply these beautiful waters. Mackinaw City is where we board the passenger ferry over to Mackinac Island. This is such a beautiful crossing of Lake Huron, indoor seating or for those who love the wind in their hair, there is outdoor seating atop the ferry for the twenty minute crossing. It is always a great pleasure to approach Mackinac Island, as she is a gem to gaze upon from the waters. Welcome to Mackinac Island! There are no motorized vehicles allowed on the pristine 3.8 mile island. Mackinac Island served as a strategic point for the Great Lakes fur trade and later the British established Fort Mackinac on the island during the

American Revolutionary War. The Fort still stands today and is open for tours which include costumed docents and battle recreations. Mackinac Island first became a popular summer resort destination for the very wealthy in the late 19th century and the entire island is now listed as a National Historic

air! Mackinac Island has been the setting of two feature films: This Time for Keeps, starring Esther Williams, in 1946 and Somewhere in Time, which was filmed at the Grand Hotel (pictured above) in 1979 and starred both Christopher Reeves and Jane Seymour. The Grand Hotel

Landmark. Travelers are wooed by the architecture, gardens, galleries, restaurants, history, natural beauty, and the eight mile bicycling trail that follows the island’s perimeter. Downtown streets are filled with fudge shops and tourists are known as “fudgies!” The natural beauty of the island is best experienced by horsedrawn carriage. Narrated carriage tours are always a highlight as the horses make their way through the heavily wooded areas, past the fort, and over to a scenic lookout of a natural carved arch that overlooks the water. The lilacs that drench the island are thick and sweetly scent the

The Grand Hotel’s front porch, the longest in the world, became a principal meeting place for all of Mackinac Island in the 1890’s. Today, guests enjoy rocking on the Adirondack chairs that line the massive porch while gazing out past manicured gardens. There are 386 guest rooms, none of which are alike. Join us on this truly special experience!

GET YOUR AFFAIRS IN ORDER FOR AN ORDERLY ESTATE by Jeff Ponte, Edward Jones Advisor

You may be quite willing to plan an investment strategy for your retirement years. After all, it can be enjoyable to think about traveling the world, pursuing your hobbies or participating in any of the activities you’ve associated with an active retirement. However, once you do retire, you’ll need to “shift gears” somewhat to focus on your legacy. Specifically, to protect your loved ones and ensure your intentions are clear and carried out, you’ll need to do some more planning – and you’ll need to share your thoughts with your family. Here are some moves to consider: •List your assets and debts. Your family needs to be aware of your assets and debts, so share this information with them while you are alive and well. •Create a durable power of attorney. Give a trusted friend or family member a durable power of attorney to pay bills and make financial choices on your behalf if you are unable to do so.

•Choose an executor. An executor is the person or entity you name in your will to carry out your wishes. An executor has a variety of responsibilities, so pick someone who is honest and capable of dealing with legal and financial matters. Talk with an attorney about how best to name your executor. •Update your will. You might have written a will many years ago, but, over time, many aspects of your life may have changed. Review your will with your attorney to ensure it reflects your current wishes. •Review benefits of a living trust. A simple will may not be enough to accommodate your estate-planning needs. You might want to consider establishing a living trust, which provides you with significant flexibility in distributing your assets and can help you avoid the time-consuming, expensive and public process of probate. To create a trust or other estateplanning documents, you will need to work with a qualified legal professional. •Review your beneficiary designations.

The beneficiary designations on your financial accounts (401(k), IRA, etc.) and your insurance policies can even supersede the directions on your will, so it’s essential that you update these designations to reflect events such as divorce and remarriage. And make sure your beneficiaries have the facts they need to claim their benefits. •Share location of your legal documents. Your loved ones should know where you keep documents such as your birth certificate, will and living trust. If you keep these items in a safe deposit box, tell your family where you keep the key. •Encourage two-way communication. It’s obviously necessary to communicate your final wishes to your family members – but listen to their wishes and concerns, too. For example, ask your children to agree on who gets those objects of special concern to them, such as furniture, mementos and heirlooms. As you can see, you’ll need to take several steps to fulfill your intentions

– and the above list is certainly not exhaustive. So plan carefully, engage the appropriate team – financial advisor, attorney, tax professional – and put your plans in motion. By being proactive, you can greatly ease the burden on your loved ones in the future. For additional information contact: Jeff Ponte, your local Edward Jones advisor. REVERSE MORTGAGE MYTHS

by David Mattull, Reverse Specialist

Here are some of the most common misconceptions about Home Equity Conversion Mortgages (HECMs) — also known as reverse mortgages— and the truth behind these myths.. 1. “A reverse mortgage requires giving

up ownership of your home.” False. As the borrower, your name remains on the title and the home is still yours—just as it would be with any mortgage. You’re required to continue paying real estate taxes, homeowner’s insurance, and providing basic maintenance to your home. Once you no longer live in the home as your primary residence, the loan balance, including interest and fees, must be repaid.* This is usually done by the homeowner or their estate selling the house. 2. “A reverse mortgage should only be used as a last resort.” False. With newer loan options that reduce up-front costs, reverse mortgages have become more versatile in recent years. Many homeowners age 62 and older are now using a reverse mortgage strategically as part of a sound financial plan.

QUALITY OF LIVING Independence Financial Freedom Comfort Age-Friendly With a Reverse Mortgage, you can access equity in your home to: 

Pay off your existing mortgage to get rid of payments

Travel

Renovate your home

Eliminate bills

Pay for medical expenses

Create a Line of Credit

Have an emergency fund

Purchase a new home/downsize

For example, a reverse mortgage line of credit you can tap as needed. (And unlike a traditional Home Equity Line of Credit, the unused reverse mortgage credit line actually grows over time.) Or, monthly advances can help you supplement other retirement income, so you can avoid withdrawing savings or liquidating invested assets. In any case, no monthly mortgage payments are required,* which can improve your cash flow and help you live more comfortably. A Senior Vice President from First Integrity Mortgage Services will be pleased to work with you and your financial advisor to develop a solution that’s right for you. 3. “There are restrictions on how I can use the money from a reverse mortgage.” False. How you use your reverse mortgage proceeds is up to you. Among the most common uses are paying off an existing mortgage or ther debt in order to eliminate monthly debt payments; creating a cash reserve; supplementing monthly income; paying for home improvements; or covering medical bills or long-term care expenses. 4. “I could wind up owing more than my house is worth with a reverse mortgage, and leave my heirs with debt.” False. A HECM (Home Equity Conversion Mortgage) reverse mortgage is insured by the Federal Housing Administration. This insurance feature guarantees that

you will never owe more than the value of your home when the loan becomes due. No debt will be left to your heirs. And if the loan balance is less than the market value of the home, the additional equity is retained by the homeowner/ heirs (if the home is sold). 5. “Reverse mortgages are too complicated.” Not so. With most financial products, there are a number of factors to consider before you can choose what’s best for you. With First Integrity Mortgage Services, you can rely on your Senior Vice President to be a trusted resource for clear information and responsible guidance. In addition, before you apply for a governmentinsured Home Equity Conversion Mortgage, you are required to receive reverse mortgage counseling from a third-party counselor who’s approved by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). These independent counselors are not affiliated with First Integrity Mortgage Services, and their only job is to ensure you fully understand every aspect of your reverse mortgage.

MYSTERIES AT 1939 CHEROKEE STREET

by Nini Harris, Historian

One of the most exotic shops in St. Louis fills the narrow storefront at 1939 Cherokee Street. The music of legendary French songstress Edith Piaf is often floating out of the two story book store that is a maze of shelves filled with rare and collectible tomes. Behind the counter, bibliophile and Serbian-American Jovanka Hammond fills book requests from across the nation. Through the years her customers have come from six continents. While the store with its 300,000 unusual and out-of-print books is endlessly fascinating, the building itself has a mysterious past. When Hammond and her husband, architect Peter Hammond, bought the old storefront in 1981, they were intrigued by a tunnel-like hallway leading from the basement. The hallway, walled with primitive masonry, connected to a cellar-like room under the back yard. Shortly after Jovanka opened her business, someone stopped in the shop and claimed his family had owned the building. He said that his grandfather had brewed beer and distilled liquor in the basement during prohibition. Hammond was busy with customers and could not stop to get the young man’s name and contact information. He left and has never returned. But his comments could explain the tunnel and cellar. I searched through the records in the basement of City Hall and at St. Louis Public Library to document the building. The story of 1939 Cherokee Street and the family that owned it for eight decades seems to support the man’s claims. But the story stirs up more questions. The City’s Assessor’s records document that German-Americans Rosina and Jacob Keller bought the property in 1888. The following year, a house building company that worked with German St. Louisans received a permit to construct the brick storefront for the Kellers. Jacob Keller died on January 22, 1893. A year later his widow Rosina had married a German immigrant named Protas Mayer, who worked as a brewer. According to the census entries, they had a son Martin and a daughter Mathilda. While the Mayer family lived in the second floor, three room flat, Protas worked at a brewery. Rosina also ran a boarding house in the first floor storefront. In 1900, she supplied housing, provided meals and did the laundry for six, male boarders residing in the store. (Many immigrant women took in boarders

S

TL now and then

to pay for their homes.) With mammoth Lemp Brewery only a block away and huge Anheuser-Busch only a few blocks away, many single men working at the breweries needed lodging in the neighborhood. In 1910, Rosina was cooking and doing the laundry for eight boarders. All eight were born in Germany. Seven of the eight boarders worked at a brewery. Prohibition, enacted in 1919, left the huge breweries deserted. In the wake of this social experiment, thousands of skilled brewery workers found themselves unemployed. Many ethnic communities perceived the legislation as part of the anti-immigrant sentiment that had been aroused in World War I. Ethnic Italians, ethnic Irish, ethnic Bohemians, and ethnic Germans simply ignored the Prohibition. The loss of income and the mysterious tunnel and cellar support the idea that Protas Mayer was producing brews not just for family use, but for sale. While evidence suggests that Protas and Rosina were manufacturing illegal brews during Prohibition, the secrecy of an illegal business obscures the story of these German-Americans. While many bootleggers brewed in the basement or kitchen, the Mayers felt a need to hide their operation with a claustrophobic tunnel and cellar. So I wonder if they were afraid that their neighbors would report them. Or was the scale of their production so large that if local officials stumbled on it, they would have had to take action? Often bootleggers ran sham businesses. Ice cream parlors, small groceries, confections, and soda fountains provided a cover for buying the large quantities of makings for illegal brews. At this point, I have not found any evidence that Protas and Rosina ran a sham business to cover their illegal operations. So how did they disguise the purchases for their bootlegging operations? Were their customers their friends and extended family, or did their mysterious operation supply a large outlet, like a speakeasy? And the story of Protas and Rosina Mayer raises the question, how does it effect otherwise law-abiding Americans when they find an American law absurd and decide to ignore it? ST.L UIS

IT HAPPENED IN ST. LOUIS 50 YEARS AGO…

Mercantile Library Collection For close to 107 years, the Hodiamont Streetcar clanged down St. Louis’ city street tracks. The Hodiamont line, which operated from northwest St. Louis to Grand Avenue and even picked up passengers for the city’s Gaslight Square, ran its final route on May 21, 1966. According to the St. Louis Post Dispatch, the motorman on that last ride for Car No. 1628 was Jake Herin, who was ending 23 years of streetcar service, and his final run had to make one last unscheduled stop. Heading west, he came upon Car No. 1656, which was stranded at Walton Avenue with a burned motor. Herin’s streetcar had to push it home. The rest is STL history! Soon, St. Louisans will be able to hop aboard the historic Loop Trolley Line from Forest Park to U-City Delmar Loop. The 2.2 mile line will mark the re-birth of St. Louis’ famed streetcars.

VOLUNTEERS TO CALL, CARE AND CONNECT IMMIGRANT & REFUGEE WOMEN’S PROGRAM by Pat Joshu, IRWP Executive Director

Making a routine phone call isn’t intimidating - unless you know that the voice on the other end of the line will always be speaking in a language you do not understand. Many immigrants and refugees in our city are unable to communicate on the business of daily life because they have not yet found a way to learn English. Getting to group classes can be impossible for those who cannot drive, are caring for small children, or working long shifts. These and other barriers often mean individuals live in

America for years without a bridge to communication. Seemingly simple tasks like understanding mail or going grocery shopping become daunting. Discovering that in-home English classes are possible through Immigrant & Refugee Women’s Program (IRWP) - and making the call to connect with a caring volunteer teacher - can be a crucial first step. From Burma to Bosnia, from Iraq to Ethiopia, students joining the program want to learn and feel a part of the St. Louis family. A volunteer calling IRWP is a glimmer of hope for these newcomers. Our volunteers come from a variety of backgrounds. IRWP considers their busy lifestyles, location, and interests to find a perfect student. Any little detail in a student’s story might draw a volunteer to them: coordinating schedules, the surprise of discovering that someone lives right down the street, or just a gutfeeling. After initially visiting that student and hearing about experiences and hopes firsthand, they might discover

a connection that was meant to be. After a volunteer and a student are matched, IRWP continues to support the partnership. Since no prior tutoring or second language experience is required to volunteer, staff shows teachers how to use our all-English curriculum to make a real difference in a student’s life. It doesn’t take long for a unique bond to form through these weekly class sessions. Learning with a teacher who truly cares in the safe space of their home allows the student to achieve their goals. Though they are only together a couple of hours each week, the teacher makes a direct impact on the student’s progress while seeing feelings of fear and loneliness ebb away. Class time gives the volunteer a unique insight into another culture, and often evolves from service into a happy and mutual friendship. Two hours a week doesn’t sound like much time, but to students it is the difference between seclusion and the American life they have always wanted.

Last year, 169 Volunteers taught 175 women and men from 38 areas around the globe during over 6,300 hours of class. This year, we are growing and students are achieving more than ever. Whether their English helps them finally talk with neighbors, pass their citizenship exam, or support their families, it all began with a volunteer’s phone call. Call, Care, and Connect with us about Volunteering with our program at 314-771-1104 or visit www.irwp.net to learn more.

All adoptable dogs are fully vetted being spayed/neutered, vaccinated, micro-chipped and heart worm tested. Needy Paws Rescue has at least 50 adoptable dogs every week. Bustamoov

Renegade

Meet Bustamoov, a 2 year old Terrier mix. Bustamoov loves squeaky toys and any kind of bones to chew on. He has had a rough life and is cautious when meeting men and being in new environments, but warms up after he feels safe and comfortable. He will do best in a home where he can be the only dog. He is friendly with children but can be a little shy at first. He has not bee cat tested. Bustamoov is house trained and all he needs now is a family to love him.

Meet the handsome Renegade, a 1-1/2 year old Mastiff/Shepherd mix. Renegade is super playful, happy, carefree and just the sweetest guy, He loves to chase balls, play with rope toys and run around in the yard playing with the other dog in his foster home. He is smart and is already learning his basic commands, such as sit and come and is working on leash training. He has not been tested with kids or cats yet. Renegade is house and crate trained. He would do best in an active home where he would gets lots of playtime/exercise and have a fence-in yard so he can run around.

Snooki

Huckleberry

Meet sweet Snooki, a 2 year old Pit Bull mix. Snooki is the sweetest girl and everyone who meets her falls instantly in love. She is good with all dogs and cats, with a proper introduction. She loves to play and would do better with another dog to play with and to keep her company. She is great with kids too and is protective over her family. Snooki is house and crate trained. All she needs is a family to call her own.

Meet Huckleberry, a 3 year old Hound mix. Huckleberry likes to give kisses and loves to be next to you so he can snuggle. He likes playing with his toys and chewing on his nylabone. He still needs a little leash training, but since he is so willing to please his family, he should figure it out fast. Huckleberry gets along with other dogs and is good around kids, but has not been cat tested yet. He is house and crate trained.

BECOME A PET’S FOSTER PARENT

Needy Paws Rescue of St Louis, is a 100% volunteer foster-based 501(c)3 organization, saving dogs at high kill shelters, strays, abandoned or owner surrendered. All of our rescued dogs are placed in approved inspected foster homes while waiting for their Forever Family. Needy Paws Rescue receives requests to save dogs every day and it is very hard to decide which dogs to save and those that have to be

left behind. We don’t want to leave any behind, but can only rescue when foster homes are available. We need More Foster Homes. Please help us by being a FOSTER PARENT to a rescued dog. It is such a rewarding opportunity. You supply your Home and your Love. NPR covers expenses, providing you with food, treats, collars, leashes, beds, crates and any other items needed to care for your foster dog. Please consider Fostering a dog and preparing him/her to be adopted to a forever family. Go to www.needypaws.org, fill out a Foster Application and you’ll be on your way to saving a dog’s life.
