from your Pastor With God’s word saving, sanctifying, strengthening, and satisfying us, we are assured of good success. However, we can truly claim such if we are meditating the “book of the law” day and night, which Joshua 1:8 expresses. It is therefore necessary for us to read our Bible daily, and to meditate it diligently, recognizing that, “…Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God” (Matthew 4:4). In our desire, decision, and determination to have good success, let us always prioritize God and His word in our lives. We thank God for making us learn the value of constantly seeking God through His word, and for instructing us to do so through our Sunday School lessons and preaching exhortaDR. ED M. LAURENA tions. I hereby enjoin you all to study the Scriptures, since this is essential in “Making Disciples” which is our church’s goal for God’s glory. We cannot produce disciples or followers of Christ, if we ourselves are not disciples of God’s word. Moreover, keep on growing in your faith in the Lord. It delights me to know that you are continually supporting our church activities through your participation in area soulwinning, Bible studies, and follow-ups, likewise in our Nehemiah project and discipleship program. God knows all your efforts for His work. They are not in vain. Happy Lord’s Day!!!

DETECTING LIES BY MEDITATING TRUTHS
t is very amazing to see the expertise of bank tellers and service people on detecting fraudulent money and bills. We would think that they have been trained by being exposed to handling fake bills to be able to spot them. However, federal agents and the banking service providers do not learn to spot counterfeit money by studying the counterfeits. They study huge amount of genuine bills until they master the look of the real thing. Then when they see the bogus money, they recognize it. Likewise, medical practitioners and professionals are able to detect an abnormal heart or respiratory condition not by being trained on hearing abnormal conditions through
stethoscope but by being exposed to a long series of hearing good heartbeats and respiratory breathing. Then when they hear abnormal breathing and heartbeat, they would be able to detect ailment. Similarly for Christians, it is not our exposure to the deceits, lies, and manipulations of godless ways that would protect us through prudence but our fervent exposure to and meditations on the truth of God’s Word. May we always detect lies by meditating on God’s Word. Proverbs 18:15 “ The heart of the prudent getteth knowledge; and the ear of the wise seeketh knowledge.”

I
t is the grace of God that I am thankful of as a fulltime worker in CBBC. I got saved when I was seven years of age through the ministry of our dear pastor, Dr. Ed Laurena, here in San Pedro. I am also thankful to my Sunday school teachers and Academy teachers as well. If not because of the discipleship program of our church, I could not imagine where I am heading to as a Christian. This church taught me a lot of principles to live by. I truly thank God that we have a church that has a heart to disciple every individual before he faces eternity. I have also seen the hand of God work in the lives of our young people here in CBBC for they were once making problems in the homes but are now being used of God by solving others’ problems. They become soulwinners and disciplers. Many of them are now serving in the ministry. It is also my privilege as an area leader to practice discipleship as God gives me opportunities to help others be the disciples of our Lord by teaching them how to win souls, love the Lord, and conduct Bible studies. It is my joy to be involved in the realization of our theme this year which is making disciples, an emphasis we are going to make as a church. The task of discipling others is not easy, but it is always rewarding. I encourage everyone to participate in the programs of our church because this will not only help us become disciples but disciplers as well. I always thank God for our Pastor whom God always uses to have a vision to help every member grow in grace and in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. “It is God that girdeth me with strength, and maketh my way perfect.” – Psalms 18:32
Bro. Emmanuel “Pops” Villarosa
First “Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things.” - Phil. 4:8
Perhaps one of the most neglected disciplines in the Christian life these days is that of meditation. It may be that very few Christians realize how essential it is to be conscious of the consequences of what they think about. Paul the apostle, in the verse quoted above instructs us about what we should think of. Meditation does not come naturally to even the best of us. We stir up and act out that which is in our hearts. The Scriptures in Luke 6:45 attests, “A good man out of the good treasure of his heart bringeth forth that which is good; and an evil man out of the evil treasure of his heart bringeth forth that which is evil: for of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaketh” Meditation is a function of the mind and the heart. It is what we think about in our hearts and it is something we each do every day. Whether we realize it or not, we devote a large portion of our time in some form of meditation. The satanic transcendental Eastern Religion has made it into a form of mantra to achieve a momentary deceptive peace from this stressful world. We have heard of an adage, "you are what you eat," but as far as our inner world is concerned "you are (and are becoming) what you think." Proverbs 23:7a exhorts, “For as he thinketh in his heart, so is he:…“. Most often, what we meditate on may or may not be valuable. In fact, what we habitually think about is either UNHEALTHY for our Christian walk or just plain SINFUL. Our character is being formed and solidified with each passing day. This is true whether we zealously plan through what we want to be or if we just let life happen. Some of the most powerful influences on the development of our character are determined by what we read, look at, listen to, associate with and think about. Our 'inner life' is an accurate representation of our real person. No matter what service we perform for God, or what we appear to be to others, the important thing is the purity of our inner self. We must not live a life of duplicity and hypocrisy. Our private inner life leaning in Christ must so permeate our very being that it is manifested in our public life. Much of the world’s affections, entertainment and media should be repulsive to a Christian because they are opposed to Biblical precepts. Instead of filling your mind with even more rubbish that you get from the world every day, you must saturate your mind with goodness and purity of God’s most Holy Word. Do not feed the nature which is already in you; rather get rid of that garbage that infects you and those around you. “Let the words of my mouth, and the meditation of my heart, be acceptable in thy sight, O LORD, my strength, and my redeemer.” - Psalm 19:14 Meditating on God’s Word is a constant reinforcement and reflection on the relationship we have with God. It seeks to improve this relationship by allowing God to use His Word to renew our minds and our hearts through knowledge of His will. It is thinking about His love and influence in our life, it is ruminating about His awesome power and mighty deeds. It is joyfully giving thanks to Him for all He has done. It is being in awe and appreciative of His glorious works to the children of men. It is using all our energy to understand and obey His word because meditation digests all things concerning God and makes them a power which can renew our very hearts to be effective children of God. The Word of God plays a central role in meditation because it is the place where our knowledge of God originates. We must therefore determine to read, know, and ponder on the Word of God. We are living on borrowed time and life. Let us Make First Things First as the Psalmist has said: Psalm 119:148, “Mine eyes prevent the night watches, that I might meditate in thy word.”
HOW TO MEDITATE ON SCRIPTURE letting the Word of God dwell in our lives The words of Scripture are living words. (See Hebrews 4:12.) They contain eternal wisdom held in the shell of human words. God wants us to “break open” these human words and begin to discover the rich wealth of personal application and understanding that they hold. This goal can be accomplished as you memorize and meditate on Scripture. The Apostle Paul said, “Let the word of Christ dwell in you [live in you] richly in all wisdom” (Colossians 3:16). Meditation on Scripture will cause Scripture to “dwell in you” and become a source of wisdom in your mind, will, and emotions. Remember, meditation cannot be done in a hurry. It takes time. Doing studies on the meaning of a passage and committing it to memory prepare you to meditate on it. As you meditate, the Holy Spirit will teach you the ways of God through His Word. (See John 16:13.) Use the following keys to meditation: Worship God in Your Spirit Your times of meditation should be times of worship and fellowship with God. Worship God in your spirit as you quote God’s Word back to Him. Reverence God’s Word and purpose to “do according to all that is written therein” (Joshua 1:8). Personalize the Passage Turn the Scripture into a first-person prayer back to God. Personalize it by putting it in the first person, using I, me, and my. For example, Colossians 3:16 (quoted above) could be personalized by saying, “Let the word of Christ dwell in ME richly in all wisdom.” When you put Scripture in the first person, it becomes a living expression within your heart, which is one aspect of meditation. Give Attention to Each Word of Each Verse Focusing on one verse at a time, quote it to the Lord, pondering each word. With each recitation of a verse, emphasize a different word. Be attentive. This simple method of meditation will reveal new insights and give you greater understanding of phrases and
sentences. As you hear the words of the passage, you will discern nuances and associations that are often overlooked when the passage is read silently. Illustrate the Main Concepts Found Within the Passage As you memorize and meditate on a passage, look for Biblical concepts and patterns. Sometimes drawing simple illustrations with stick figures and symbols can help you remember the main ideas of the passage. Not only will the actual creation of the illustration help you further meditate on the meaning of the passage, but your illustration can serve as a simple summary of what the Lord taught you through meditation on His Word. Each illustration should represent your current understanding of the action being described in the verse or phrase. As your understanding of the verse deepens, your illustrations will expand. Meditate on Scripture as You Go to Sleep at Night One of the most critical times to meditate on God’s Word is as you go to sleep each night. In Scripture, there are many references to meditating on Scripture at this time. (See Joshua 1:8, Psalm 1:2, 63:6, and 119:48.) The quiet moments of preparing for sleep offer an ideal setting for contemplation and fellowship with the Lord. The thoughts that are on your mind as you go to sleep will be in your subconscious mind all through the night. They will strongly influence your attitudes the next day, consciously or subconsciously. Respond to God as He Teaches You As you meditate, don’t be discouraged if you have to go over the passage several times before insights begin to come to mind. As God reveals an insight to you, pray it back to Him and ask Him for the grace to apply that truth in your life. If the Holy Spirit convicts you of sin in your life, confess it to the Lord and be forgiven. Apply to your life the insights you gain through meditation on Scripture. -iblp.org
