from your Pastor

DR. ED M. LAURENA

“Developing a Heart for God in Making Disciples” is our theme this month. We surely need to have a humble heart in order to do God’s will. We thank and praise the Lord for His readiness to give us such kind of heart, and for His patience to develop in us godly character traits out of a humble heart. All we must do is admit our need for God’s power to transform us, to accept His might to enable us to overcome sins, and to acknowledge His ways of granting us spiritual growth, strengthened faith, and steadfast stewardship. In so doing, we must be clothed with humility, knowing that God resists the proud, and gives grace to the humble, according to I Peter 5:5. Likewise, we should be warned against arrogance, since “Pride goeth before destruction, and an haughty spirit before a fall. Better it is to be of an humble spirit with the lowly, than to divide the spoil with the proud” (Proverbs 16:18-19). As your Pastor, I am actually humbled by God’s amazing grace and awesome wonders that He constantly allows me to experience and to witness through Your prayers and support. Last week, the celebration of the Outreach Anniversary in Jhongli, Taiwan was a victorious one with many souls getting saved. That is also true with the feeding endeavor that we sponsored for children. Let us then continually humble ourselves under the mighty hand of God in our daily walk with Him, as well as in our worship, service, and prayer; along with our commitment to love one another with His love.

Seven Habits of a Graciously Humble Heart HUMBLE HEART

Isaiah 57:15 / 1Peter 5:1-11 I. A humble heart sees God differently. A. Humility is directly affected by the size of our self. B. Humility is directly affected by the size of our God. II. A humble heart seeks God devotedly. A. Humble heart depends on the sovereignty of God. B. A humble heart decides upon the sovereignty of God. III. A humble heart serves God dutifully. A. A humble heart serves even if unnoticed. B. A humble heart serves even if unrewarded. IV. A humble heart is satisfied by God dramatically. A. God satisfies a humble heart significantly. B. God satisfies a humble heart spectacularly.

J

esus said, “Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls.” (Matthew 11:29). To be like Christ, we must follow His example of humility. How can we learn to walk humbly with our God? 1. Know and remember that God is in charge—and praise Him! It is hard to keep things in perspective if you do not know and remember Who the Lord is! Psalm 90 is a good place to ponder on. 2. Pray for a humble heart. Ask the Holy Spirit to open your eyes to the ways in which pride gets in the way of your relationships. 3. Pay more attention to your own faults than to the flaws of others. Confess your faults one to another, and move on! 4. Do not hide behind your false dignity—it is pride’s favorite hiding place. Your real value lies in God’s eyes, not in the eyes of the world. Remember: “Likewise, ye younger, submit yourselves unto the elder. Yea, all of you be subject one to another, and be clothed with humility: for God resisteth the proud, and giveth grace to the humble.” (1 Peter 5:5). 5. Earnestly worship the Lord. Give all of your heart and mind to God. 1 Chronicles 16:29 “Give unto the LORD the glory due unto his name: bring an offering, and come before him: worship the LORD in the beauty of holiness.” 6. Serve others. The fastest way to humility is the way Christ chose. “For even the Son of man came not to be ministered unto, but to minister, and to give his life a ransom for many.” (Mark 10:45).

GOD

deserves our best. Through our NEHEMIAH PROJECT FOR GOD'S GLORY, we can give our best. Let us continually fulfill our commitment by His

grace.

7. Thank others. Thankfulness is humbleness. “I thank my God upon every remembrance of you,” (Philippians 1:3).

CBBC CHOIR HELD SOULWINNING RETREAT

THE BLESSINGS OF DISCIPLESHIP

P

CBBCO- JHONGLI, TAIWAN VICTORIOUSLY CELEBRATED 4TH OUTREACH ANNIVERSARY

R

eal victory can only be achieved through God’s glory. We have seen the power of God working through His Word. The celebration of the CBBC’s Outreach at Jhongli, Taiwan yielded 97 first-time-visitors who clearly professed receiving Jesus Christ as Lord and Personal Saviour and three (3) brethren who followed in water baptism. God’s word ministered by Dr. Ed Laurena and Pastor Rudy Calayan inspired and challenged us to press on and flourish in faith in a land so far from home country. Hearing testimonies of restoration from brethren who came from broken homes and witnessing changed lives of people who were once persecuted by loved ones for their newfound faith were truly heartwarming and inspiring. Please pray with us and remain blessed. To God be all the glory and honor!

BBC Choir members had a soulwinning retreat last January 31. With the goal of bringing souls for Christ, they went door-knocking, taking with them the challenge given by Rev. Jhun Garapan, "I AM PURE FROM THE BLOOD OF ALL MEN." After two hours, the stirred-up excited choir members were blessed by the Lord with 211 souls won from the 238 doors knocked within Pacita Subdivision . Aside from the successful soulwinning endeavour, the choir members also enjoyed their luncheon fellowship, along with the testimonies, games and other activities that they participated in. To end the day, they were revived and refreshed with the inspiring exhortation of Preacher Joseph Knouf entitled, "The Importance of Church Choir.”

88 KIDS CAME AND DINED AT THE FEEDING PROGRAM

J

ust like Jesus Christ’s invitation in John 21:12, “Come and dine” was the thrust of the feeding program held in the morning of Thursday, January 30. Twenty-five church workers went out early to invite children from the streets and residences of Brgy. Landayan. Eighty-eight children enjoyed singing Christian action songs and memorizing John 3:1. The story of Lazarus and the rich man in Luke 16 launched the presentation of the Gospel. The children and several adults who accompanied some of them got saved as they followed the prayer of acceptance. Not only were their souls and spirits were fed, but also their tummies. After they have lined up for yummy arroz caldo prepared by the Baptist Kitchen crew, bare-footed boys and girls were given free slippers sponsored by the program hosts, Evangelist and Mrs. Joe Knouf. To God be the glory for such a friendly church and a loving God we have; thus, making a way for these children to hear the most important message of life.

Lord, please develop in me a humble heart Beata B. Agustin

Lord, please develop in me a humble heart thru Your conquering authority. Keep reigning over me against pride’s vanity For my spirit to worship You with truth’s security As I trust in Your salvation-certainty… Here am I depending on You along Your wise sovereignty!

“But the LORD said unto Samuel, Look not on his countenance, or on the height of his stature; because I have refused him: for the LORD seeth not as man seeth; for man looketh on the outward appearance, but the LORD looketh on the heart.”1 Samuel 16:7 It is not true that we see things as they are. The truth is, “We see things as we are.” In a global society obsessed with physical appearance, looks can be very deceiving. However, God has set a higher standard. When Samuel was looking for a man to succeed Saul as King of Israel, he heard God explicitly saying, “…look not on his countenance…the LORD looketh on the heart.” Whereas man places a high price on the externals, God examines deep within that man for something more. Essentially, the condition of one’s heart determines its character. David was a mighty warrior, a valiant general, an inspired leader, a successful businessman, a skilled marksman, and a gifted psalm writer. Nonetheless, the thing that impressed God about David was his heart; thus, making him known as a man after God’s own heart and consequently being anointed as Israel’s next King (Acts 13:22). The spiritual health and productivity of our heart must constantly be protected from the destructive forces of success, selfishness, sloth, sin, and stress; all of which cause us to rely on self and not to have the humility to rely on God. Success crowds our heart with things and accomplishments, causing puffed hearts with counter-

feit accolades. Selfishness shrinks our heart to where there is not enough room but Me, Myself, and Mine-a grotesquely alienating life from others and the brethren. Sloth dries up the heart with inactivity, laziness, and lack of service. Sin hardens the heart to the things that really matter in life…the things of God and the heart for God. Stress breaks the heart by placing unnecessary demands on it like pressure and diseases…failing to recognize God’s power that has been made available. In overcoming those perilous heartafflicting elements, we must continually fill our hearts with the concerns of God’s heart. Humility and lowliness of mind will definitely help us in this endeavour. Like David in 1 Samuel 18:7, we must be mindful of the Shepherd, magnifying the LORD, and exalting His name. We must be found worshipping God and consistently inquiring of the Lord for His available service. Our available service for the Lord opens up a floodgate of lifegiving resources to bring energy and power to our heart and devotion to God. We must also love God’s Word to be repentant of our sins and faults. David sinned desperately…but he wanted desperately not to sin. The fact is…we are sinners, but we must be repentant sinners. All throughout a tumultuous, eventful, and stressful life, David remained humble trusting in the Lord. As saved believers, our hearts have been captured from the mire of sin and guilt. The proper heart-response would be to be captivated by the Person of the Lord Jesus Christ.

Lord, please develop in me a humble heart thru Your loving faithfulness. Keep subduing me against selfishness’ haughtiness For my soul to commune with You inside fellowship’s sweetness As I beg for Your guidance-graciousness… Here am I clinging to with Your ready helpfulness! Lord, please develop in me a humble heart thru Your abounding provision. Keep filling me against discontentment’s affliction For my needs to find in You sufficiency’s portion As I rely upon Your goodness-function… Here am I thanking You for Your blessed satisfaction! Lord, please develop in me a humble heart thru Your perfecting ways. Keep molding me against stubbornness’ race For my will to yield to You upon surrender’s brace As I learn from Your instruction-pace… Here am I acknowledging You and Your granted days! Lord, please develop in me a humble heart thru Your enduring mercy. Keep forgiving me against sinfulness’ deficiency For my repentance to reach You midst sincerity’s fervency As I beseech for Your pardon-clemency… Here am I abiding in You around Your compassionate intimacy! Lord, please develop in me a humble heart thru Your straightening chastisement. Keep freeing me against rebellion’s entanglement For my obedience to offer to You sacrifices’ involvement As I participate in Your kingdom-advancement… Here am I living for You toward Your holy fulfillment! Lord, please develop in me a humble heart thru Your empowering might. Keep driving me against worldliness’ blight For my faith to touch You along commitment’s height As I labor along Your stewardship-light… Here am I serving You for Your glorious delight!

BYCM Retreat Enjoyed by Workers and Students

THREE TAIWAN OUTREACHES GATHERED IN JOINT WINTER FELLOWSHIP

E

“Habang meron pang unsaved sa campus ninyo, hindi ka pa dapat tumigil na magbahagi ng Salita ng Diyos!” This was the charge given by Preacher Pops Villarosa to the fifty-four participants of the Baptist Youth Campus Ministry (BYCM) Retreat held in a resort in Calamba City last Friday, January 31. Back in August 2013, BYCM was introduced to the congregation as a ministry catering to the spiritual needs of the young people, majority from high school campuses in San Pedro and nearby cities. Keeping the same objective of “Carrying the Light of the Gospel,” the workers and students were challenged to join the congregation in meeting the 5,000 first time visitors for the whole month of February in line with the 35th Church Anniversary. They were convinced that the genuine Christian joy never comes from the influences of this world but from within the heart of a Christian who sincerely loves and serves the Lord. In a message by Rev. Duke Lumictin taken from 1 John 1:1-4, they were persuaded to “enjoy!”

ighty-five (85) precious folks from the Kaohsiung, Taichung, and Jhongli, Taiwan have taken advantage of the Chinese New Year holiday for a 1-day joint winter fellowship, inspired by our Church’s theme, "Making Disciples." The three preachers delivered blessed sermons. Bro. Jay preached on "A Degree to Agree," Bro. Julius Marcos on "The Man Of God," and Bro. Paul Aller on "Traps to True Christian Service." The main final challenge delivered by Pastor Rudy Calayan was "Launch Out Into the Deep." It is hoped that the said event will further make the mission work there more thriving for God's glory.

Dr. Phil Stringer Lectured to BHBC Students

O

n his twelfth visit to CBBC, Dr. Phil Stringer spoke before the BHBC students in their Chapel Hour last Tuesday. He enlightened the mind of every listener through his lecture on the marks of the “Contemporary Church.” Thereafter, he gave a two-hour teaching on the Baptist stand of PreMillennialism, expounding it clearly. He concluded with this challenge, “Anything which sways us away from the Great Commission is evil, so then, Go and preach as our Commander tells us!” Meanwhile, he took another opportunity to be a blessing when he preached last Wednesday at the Prayer Meeting. In the light of John 13:34, 35, he explained the other meaning of love expressed in the New Testament, i.e., “agape”, God’s love for man. Hence, he reiterated that this kind of love must be evident in this church so as to be more effective in making disciples. To top it all, what impressed our dear pastor, Dr. Ed Laurena, is Dr. Stringer’s strong stand for the King James Bible as the infallible, inerrant, preserved and inspired Word of God. With this, we look forward to seeing Dr. Stringer not only for a one-time preaching in January next year, but for more messages as a Bible Conference is planned to be carried out.
