DR. ED M. LAURENA

In letting God develop our hearts in “Making Disciples,” we must be willing to learn with humility from Him along with His Word and ways through His ordained instructors. That means that we should be teachable as we allow God with His sovereign wisdom and perfect will to rule and prevail over us. We have a great God Who knows what is best for us, so it is a wondrous privilege for us to acknowledge His leadership, follow His commands, stick to His standards, and receive His corrections. We thank God for constantly teaching us to be the Bible believers He wants us to be through timely preachings that we need. Let us keep on depending on Him as He lovingly and graciously exhorts, inspires, warns, admonishes and rebukes us in our Christian walk. This month, we are encouraged to practice having and showing a teachable heart in our pursuit to glorify God in our church anniversary preparations. I then enjoin all of us to cooperate with our area leaders in praying for, in inviting and in bringing visitors for this occasion. Together, let us ask God to teach us persevere in fulfilling the Great Commission. Indeed, with our church uniting to please Him, He will surely answer us. Join me in begging God for His blessings while we pray for His guidance, earnestly telling Him, “Show me thy ways, O LORD; teach me thy paths. Lead me in thy truth, and teach me: for thou art the God of my salvation…” (Psa. 25:4-5).

It allows God for His instructions. B. It allows godly people’s influences. IV. A teachable heart adores God’s commandments. A. A teachable heart adheres to God’s law. B. A teachable heart abides in God’s law. V. A teachable heart will be awarded with more knowledge. A. God rewards additional knowledge to a teachable heart. B. God rewards accolade (honour and praise) to a teachable heart.

T

est Your Teachability by Honestly Answering these Questions:

1. Am I open to other people’s ideas, without compromising the Biblical precepts? 2. Do I listen more than I talk? 3. Am I open to changing my ‘opinion’ based on new information in the light of God’s Word? 4. Do I readily admit when I am wrong? 5. Do I observe prudence before acting on a situation? 6. Do I ask questions? 7. Am I willing to ask a question that will expose my ignorance or lack of knowledge? 8. Am I open to doing things in a way I haven’t done before? 9. Am I willing to ask for directions? 10. Do I act defensive when criticized, or do I listen openly for truth? May we be like David who persistently sought to do God’s will, leading him to say always, “Shew me thy ways, O LORD; teach me thy paths” (Psalms 25:4).

CBBA was Adjudged Champion in the 2nd Interschool LiteraryMusical Festival For the 2nd consecutive time, the Christian Bible Baptist Academy of San Pedro Laguna was adjudged the champion in the Musical and Literary Interschool Festival, which it successfully hosted last Friday, January 31 with the cooperation of fellowshipping Christian Schools of Tanza, Cavite, Sta. Cruz and Calauan, Laguna. The event’s theme, "Marvelous are Thy Works" came from the Scriptural passage of Psalm 139:14, "I will praise thee; for I am fearfully and wonderfully made: marvellous are thy works; and that my soul knoweth right well." Preacher Pops Villarosa expounded the said verse while exhorting and inspiring the participating students to perform, doing their best in the spirit of harmony and camaraderie. He also challenged the parents, guardians, teachers and administrators to continue training young minds for God's work and ministry, asserting that the talents which the Lord has given and refined in these students must be continually developed for God's glory. Indeed, the said activity was a shining testimony of God's marvellous works through the individual and group performances showcasing the Christian students’ unique abilities. Likewise the Christian fellowship helped build camaraderie and sportsmanship among the Baptist student circles.

TAUGHT

Acts 8:32 And he said, How can I, except some man should guide me? And he desired Philip that he would come up and sit with him. The Ethiopian eunuch whom Philip had an encounter with was not the typical castrated man employed to guard a palace or a government official. He was a respected man in his own country, (Acts 8:27) of great authority under Candace the queen. He had the charge of all the royalty’s treasures. Returning from Jerusalem for the cause of worship, he was brought to a close conversation with Philip who insistently pursued him for the Gospel’s sake. We all understand how, at the end of the story, the eunuch rejoiced for having been converted (Acts 32:39). The eunuch’s teachable heart paved the way for his salvation and baptism at the same day! He desired Philip to explain to him the scripture written in the book of Isaiah. Would Philip think that it was the portion describing the death of Jesus? Such was an enormous opportunity for the evangelist to introduce the Saviour, considering that in the eunuch’s inquiry, he expressed his thirst for the truth which was never satisfied by the Jewish religion he used to attend to. That is the same case we have in our respective areas. From this very edifice to the ends of farther Muntinlupa, Cavite, Laguna and Metro Manila, there are people desirous to be taught by every soulwinner with the Word of God. If only we listen to the Spirit’s call and rest in the power given unto us since the charge of the Great Commission (Matt. 28:18-20), we can bring anyone to the knowledge of God’s saving grace. The Gospel has an equal call to all classes of men. Although in the sight of many, our job as witnesses is degrading, let us remember that “God hath chosen the weak things of the world to confound the things which are mighty (1 Cor 1:27). We must face the fear of approaching the Class A society; for all we know, they need to be saved, too! On the other hand, as bearers of the Good News, we must also never stop yearning to be taught for when we cease to learn, we will cease to live (Psalm 90:12).

P

CBBC’S History: A testimony of fruitful discipleship by God's Grace and Power

1977

In December of 1977, Pastor Ed Laurena, a young preacher who was leading a Baptist Church in Camalig, Albay, was scheduled to see an eye specialist in Manila. Such doctor’s appointment turned out to be a significant moment for him in God’s sovereign calendar when the train that he was riding stopped at the San Pedro, Laguna train station due to engine failure. There and then, Pastor Ed felt that God was impressing in His heart the great burden to establish a Baptist Church within the locality. On his next planned visit, Pastor Ed surveyed the area for the confirmation of God’s call.

1978

In 1978, Pastor Ed with his wife Delia and their baby Mishael left Camalig, Albay to pursue God’s plan in San Pedro, Laguna, and that was to build a Bible-believing Baptist Church. On its very first Sunday service on January 22, 1978, at a rented make-shift pub, Christian Baptist Mission had 42 in attendance. During the early days of this Mission work, Pastor Ed labored for souls’ salvation and mission’s growth. He spent nine hours daily for soulwinning, door-knocking, inviting people, and conducting Bible studies as he faithfully preached God’s Word.

1979

On January 23, 1979, the Christian Baptist Mission, with an average attendance of 100-150, was organized to be Christian Baptist Church, completely sustaining itself and becoming independent from financial support from its sending Church.

1980

The year marked the growth of the Church as members were continually added and were taught to give faithfully to the Lord’s work. It celebrated its very first anniversary as an autonomous Church by launching its first fruits offering. It also began supporting missions.

1981

The growing Church experienced a great test through some members who opposed Pastor Ed’s leadership. Again, the Lord proved His call for Pastor Ed and His care for the Church. The disruptors eventually left, but the congregation’s attendance went down to an average of 40. This challenged the faithful remnants to be more diligent in their church involvement. With the Lord blessing the Church which had an attendance of over 150, it became necessary to move to a new location in San Pedro Ice Plant along the National Highway. Souls came to Christ and families were added to the Church regularly. This year, its first mission work was started in Los Baños, Laguna.

1982

In 1982, the Church’s teaching ministry was strengthened through the opening of a mini-Bible Institute to instill in the church staff Bible doctrines. The Lord blessed this ministry to become the Baptist Heritage Bible College that we know today which is steadfast in training Godcalled men and women for His ministerial work.

1983

The year was marked with an acquisition of a 500sq m parcel of land in St. Francis Homes 2 Subdivision. Pastor Ed and the church members joined in prayer vigils and “sacrificial giving” to claim the property. The construction of the building immediately followed even without sufficient financial resources at hand. It was all done by faith and the Lord dealt graciously with the Church.

1984-1985 While the said building construction was underway, the Church held its service inside the structure that was partially done. The members showed their willingness and cooperation as Pastor Ed challenged and encouraged them to give cheerfully and sacrificially for God. After a year, the Lord wrought the completion of what is now called the “Old Building.” Likewise, the Church’s name was changed to Christian Bible Baptist

Church. Moreover, its mission work in Los Baños, Laguna was organized into a Church; thus making it CBBC-San Pedro’s “first daughter church.” Meanwhile, the Christian Bible Baptist Academy, accepted its first batch of students with six volunteer staff trained through the Accelerated Christian Education (ACE) curriculum.

1986 Building extension was constructed in the adjacent piece of land to house the Christian Bible Baptist Academy that started with 30 students. The Bible Seminary was formally organized with nine students. The second mission work was launched in Batangas province, along with an overseas outreach in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

“Shew me thy ways, O LORD; teach me thy paths.”- Psalms 25:4 e have heard of the adage that “One who ceases to learn ceases to live and ceases to lead.” It is humanly impossible to attain everything there is to learning but there is a great wisdom in seeking to learn and be taught. Most people, after achieving and being positioned to a particular status and lifestyle either stale away in that comfortable zone and be complacent all throughout their lives or be selective of what and who will they learn from. Very few would dare venture to the unknown and unfamiliar because the process of learning is too humbling for them. It is of immeasurable importance for a Christian to have a heart that is willing to receive instruction, and this radiates from a heart of humility. Proverbs 4:5 asserts, “Get wisdom, get understanding: forget it not; neither decline from the words of my mouth.” Pride gets in the way because it makes you believe you are better than you actually are, preventing your growth and learning. It is impossible to teach a person who is so full of self. Clear-minded people should remain two things throughout their lifetimes: curious and teachable. Whatever your talents and/ or skills happen to be – whether it is leadership, craftsmanship, entrepreneurship, or something else – you will expand it if you keep expecting and striving to learn and to be taught. The primary need to be of a teachable heart is to listen. American writer and philosopher Henry David Thoreau wrote, “It takes two to speak the truth –one to speak and one to hear.” Being a good listener helps us to know better, to learn or unlearn what have been learned, and to put value on vital knowledge. However, knowing alone does not necessarily mean learning. We may hear countless facts but failing to act on them is just halfway through the learning process. What you have known must also be acted upon and applied so it can be taught to inspire, influence,

Pusong mapanlinlang… One cannot teach what one has not learned. The Bible commands his people in Leviticus 10:11, “And that ye may teach the children of Israel all the statutes which the LORD hath spoken unto them by the hand of Moses.” Moses was a meek and humble man with a teachable spirit. At the beginning of his quest with God, Moses was promised by the Lord to be taught the things to say and do (Exodus 4:12). God was faithful to lead Moses step by step in his journey giving him instruction along the way. Moses was also hungry to learn from and lean on the Lord’s guidance. When the Israelites were unashamedly defiant or when Pharaoh was stubborn as a mule, Moses found his way back to the Lord seeking further direction and encouragement. Moses exemplified the need for leaders to be of a teachable heart, to be humble and reverent to the Lord God in all submission. Now more than ever we need humble leaders like him. We must deliberately seek and make teachable moments…for and from ourselves… for and from the people that the Lord has placed in our midst. The late great American Baptist Pastor, Dr. Jack Hyles, has said, “Everyone is my teacher.” We should not be reliant on talent and titles to imbibe teaching. Everyone and each moment has a great truth to teach us. “Give instruction to a wise man, and he will be still wiser; Teach a just man, and he will increase in learning” (Proverbs 9:9). Our foremost motive in having a teachable heart is to learn effectively and live Spiritled and God-honoring lives. Let us open our hearts to the Lord today and apply what has been learned; ultimately for the continuance and preservation of godly generations which will come after us. Let us pray and seek to have a teachable heart for God’s glory.

Pusong mapagmalaki…
