from your Pastor
DR. ED M. LAURENA
We have a very generous God, and that is a truth we Christians must be thankful for. His generous love that made possible our salvation is always reaching to us. His generous forgiveness that caused our full pardon from the judgment of sin is constantly sanctifying us. His constant generous grace, mercy and compassion that allow us to enjoy His blessings are daily refreshing us. His generosity, as evidenced by the abounding and satisfying benefits we receive must then prod us to render our best for Him for His honor and glory. As God’s children, we should be marked by compassionate and gracious generosity which our Saviour Himself has exemplified. Let us practice giving with love, willingness and joy, knowing “…the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that, though he was rich, yet for your sakes he became poor, that ye through his poverty might be rich” (2 Corinthians 8:9). With our Anniversary celebration fast approaching, let us show our generosity by giving more of our time and resources in sharing the Gospel, inviting people to church, giving our contributions, praying and participating in all our church activities. Indeed, our generous hearts are needed in the preparation for and realization of our great occasion’s victory. Thus, we must support generously our prayer vigil, Lord’s supper, revival meeting, motorcade, and Area visitation this week. Together as a church, let us all be generous in giving our lives to the Lord as we give generously the message of salvation to others.

I. A generous heart includes the sacrifice of one’s self. A. The generosity in giving is a test of the believer’s sincerity. B. The generosity in giving is a test of the believer’s selflessness. C. The generosity in giving is a test of the believer’s sacrifice. II. A generous heart is inspired by the sacrifices of others. A. The generosity of others must inspire us. B. The generosity of others must impact us. C. The generosity of others must instruct us. III. A generous heart is influenced by the sacrifice of our Lord Jesus Christ. A. Our greatest example in generous giving is the Lord Jesus Christ. B. Our greatest encouragement in generous giving is the Lord Jesus Christ.
G
ENEROSITY BEGINS by regarding each person as though he/she has already achieved the potential for greatness that is in him/her. It is in essence a sincere desire to make others' lives more pleasant. Hebrews 13:2 reminds, “Be not forgetful to entertain strangers: for thereby some have entertained angels unawares.” Practise these 7 key steps: 1. Remind yourself every day of the generosity you want not only to feel, but also to show others. 2. When interacting with others, notice the things you could do to make their lives easier or happier. Awareness of your accountability to improve the world around you is important. 3. Think of specific ways on how you can show goodness to the people you know. Example is when a friend or family member's name appears, list something nice
you can do for that person. Think of how you might make his/ her job easier, perhaps by helping him/her finish a job. 4. Extend this thoughtfulness to strangers, even if all you do is smile and say hello, or let them on to the highway in front of you. 5. Think about how your action impacted those people, like when they smiled because of that pleasant moment or when they were able to get to their destination on time. 6. As you are consciously practising generosity to others, it will eventually get easier and habitual. The natural progression is that others will be more generous to you. After all, it is true that "…for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap." 7. Remember that generosity is not just a one-time decision, it is habitual…a lifestyle.

HE STATE of being continually harassed, persecuted and plundered did not hold the Macedonians’ arms to extend liberality to the work of the Lord and be a concrete example to the Corinthian church. Though they were intensively deficient, they took the opportunity to reach the more impoverished brethren in Judea. Hence, the essence of genuine generosity was clearly depicted by their act. Genuine generosity is not measured by the amount given, rather, by the amount left. Remember the woman who threw in two mites which equated to all of her living? Jesus commended, “That this poor widow hath cast more in, than all they which have cast into the treasury:” (Mark 12:43). She did not give out of her abundance, but it was not a burden that nothing was left for her. The Chronicle of Philanthropy, a biweekly newspaper that covers the nonprofit world, recently released the Top 50 philanthropists of 2013 which highlights one of Facebook’s founders Mark Zuckerberg, and his wife, Priscilla Chan. The couple was tagged as America’s Most Generous for the record of donating 18 million shares of Facebook stock, valued at more than $970 million, to a Silicon Valley nonprofit in December 2013. Based in Washington, DC, The Chronicle, since 1988, aims to usher material support to charitable institutions, foundations and other non-profit organizations so as to express “love for humanity” which is the etymological meaning of philanthropy. A philanthropist, therefore carries out private initiatives, for public good, focusing on quality of life. The Bible teaches us that in giving, genuine generosity springs out from a heart that is provoked by love, proved in humbleness, and powered by faith. Let everyone see how the Macedonians triumphed in spirit over their flesh, that the deeper their poverty was, the more their joy abundantly increased! We thank God for a transparent leadership we have in the person of our Pastor! It was his way of teaching us to examine how we have developed our attitude in giving that has led us to exercise genuine generosity. With our giving records in 2013, have we stopped and thought over the pathway of blessings God has made for us? Let us then take every opportunity to practice genuine generosity. Having been taught by God’s word, developing a generous heart shall not be a difficult move.
W
E PRACTICE the Lord's Supper to remember Christ's sacrifice for us. More than just a ritual or practice, the Lord's Supper should be a time to reflect on our own hearts and make right any wrong we have done. As Paul said in 1 Corinthians 10:21, "Ye cannot drink the cup of the Lord, and the cup of devils: ye cannot be partakers of the Lord's table, and of the table of devils." Paul reminds Christians that they couldn't honor God in one action and partake in worldliness in another action. They took time to remember Christ's sacrifice, but, more than a routine, it was to be a way of life. When you partake of the Lord's Supper, do you simply do so because it's an act of the Christian life, or do you allow it to be a time of remembrance, reflection, and repentance? Rather than prioritizing the act of remembrance, prioritize what it symbolizes-the incredible sacrifice Christ made for us. As we observe the Lord's Supper, seriously reflect on your life. Are you harboring any sin in your life? Are you right with all people? Don't partake of the time of remembrance without prioritizing what that time represents.

THE BLESSINGS OF DISCIPLESHIP "Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen" Matthew 28:20
I
Wika nga sa talata, "...whatsoever I have commanded you." Nahamon ako sa utos ng Panginoon ayon sa talatang "teaching them to observe all things..." I am with you alway..."
CBBC’S History: A testimony of fruitful discipleship by God's Grace and Power 1987-1988 The Church reached its goal and surpassed its usual 450-attendance mark. Its expected growth prompted another lot purchase and building construction that were made possible through the members’ sacrificial giving and God’s sufficient provisions. Moreover, it spearheaded the Church organization in 1987 of its mission work in Fort Bonifacio, Taguig, Metro Manila.
1989 It was a decade of blessings as the Church celebrated its 10th Anniversary. It held the first ever motorcade in the history of Baptist Churches in the Philippines. This is an effort to boost Anniversary invitation and to reinforce the public proclamation of Jesus Christ’s name and of His Church.
1990 The Sabbath School was initiated to cater to the “frontliners” who miss Sunday School lessons due to ministerial duties such as Sunday School teaching, ushering, and securing orderliness and maintenance during worship services. Said 300 frontliners regularly gather every Saturday afternoon for the frontliners’ meeting, and then for the Sabbath School. Meanwhile, extension works in the first church building were completed and the congregation’s average attendance was 1,000. The number or FirstTime Visitors (FTVs) doubled. On the other hand, the mission work in Roxas City was organized into a Church.
1991 The Church produced its first batch of graduates from the Christian Bible Baptist Academy and Bible Seminary. The Lord further blessed the work that it was able to support 48 churches and missions across the country. Before the year ended, the attendance doubled in its weekly average.
1993 Annex Building, present day New Building Left Wing
1989 CBBC 10th Anniversary, First Building extended
1992-1993 CBBC’s first offshore church-planting endeavor was started in the State of California, USA. With God’s sustaining grace, the outreach grew in attendance as well. Meanwhile, the Church hosted the first National Pastors and Workers’ Conference, and was attended by 273 delegates. Likewise, the Church acquired another adjacent lot property.
1998 CBBC reached its highest average attendance record of 1,800 during this year. Though only 50% of the “New Building” was completed, the auditorium became usable for the church’s 19th Anniversary. For the whole year, the Church had a total record of 7,102 first time visitors and 1,477 baptisms. Adding significant fruit for the Church was the organization of CBBC-Sta. Cruz, Laguna on July 3, 1998.
1995-1996 In 1995 alone, registered FTVs surpassed 3,000. A 280 sqm parcel of lot was acquired for the construction of another auditorium. Area Soulwinning program was reinforced with the aim, “Always Ready To Evangelize Anybody.” Thirteen areas were strategically divided with 13 chosen men to lead in soulwinning, visitation, Bible Studies, good news classes, tract distribution, and vacation Bible school activities. Likewise, most of the mission works were organized into local Churches. Also, the Loving Hands Ministry (Orphanage) was founded to care for orphaned, abandoned and surrendered children. Meanwhile, the Christian Bible Baptist Seminary adopted the name Baptist Heritage Bible Seminary.
1997 construction of our present-day main auditorium
1999 20th Anniversary reached 3,523 FTVs
1992 Further extensions for the First Building
1997 Dr. Ed encouraged the members to continue building by faith amidst oppositions. It was during this year that a new three-storey building with a mezzanine and roof deck, currently called the “New Building,” was started on two adjoining lots purchased the previous year. The average number of 23 weekly baptisms was recorded. The Baptist Heritage Bible Seminary became Baptist Heritage Bible College. Likewise, CBBC-Hinigaran in Negros Occidental was organized on November 22, 1997. Meanwhile, a fourdoor duplex-apartment was acquired which now houses the church staff and the orphanage.
1994 The late great Dr. Jack Hyles preached God’s Word in our blessed pulpit. The Deaf and Mute ministry was launched.
2003 24th Anniversary Victory Night
1999 With two decades of God’s faithfulness, the Church prayed to have 3,000 first time visitors (FTVs) on its 20th anniversary and by God’s grace, 3,523 came. The “area soulwinning” set-up became more extensive in evangelism and discipleship, with the addition of three new soulwinning areas. Likewise, two mission works were started. Furthermore, CBBC-Iloilo was organized in May, 1999. CBBC also held its 1st National Baptist Youth Convention and more than 500 Baptist youth from different churches all over the Philippines came. Since then, CBBC has been annually hosting the event where many Baptist young people are challenged, changed, and called into full time service.
2000 The Church aimed for 5,000 FTVs on its anniversary. With much faith, prayer and hard work, God gave 5,094. The “New Building” was finally completed. When the Church moved to the new auditorium, it hit the mark of an average attendance of 2,000. New ministries were started which grew spiritually and numerically
2001 CBBC reached an average attendance of 2,300. On its 22nd anniversary, it gathered 7,433 people. A total of 10,800 FTVs was recorded during this year. Meanwhile, the Church accommodated more than 400 pastors and preachers from all over the country in the Pastors’ College hosted by Dr. Clarence Sexton together with his Crown College staff and students.
2002 Fired by the success of the previous years, Dr. Ed challenged the Church to reach 10,000 in attendance for the anniversary. Later, he announced that the goal would be 12,000 instead. By the grace and power of God, 15,383 people were present on that anniversary Sunday!
2003 The Church grew to have an average of 2,250 in its attendance. On its 24th anniversary, CBBC aimed for 16,000 attendees, but a total of 16,091 came for the two consecutive services in just one Sunday. The weekly baptisms reached an average of 35. The Church also purchased a new property--a four-door apartment--that now serves as the College Ladies and Academy Staff’s Dormitory.
My God, keep helping me to be generous Beata B. Agustin
My God, keep helping me to be generous with all my heart Since I have experienced Your compassion right from the start With Your graciousness that overcomes greediness’ dart. Let me stay in Your perfect will where I fulfill my ordained part And be generously sharing Your Gospel, being salvation-smart!
B
ESIEGED BY SECULARISM and living in a culture of deteriorating morality, we Christians can easily lose sight of where we have come from— the mire of sin—and where we are at—in Christ. We find it almost impossible to uphold moral values while at the same time convey a spirit of gracious generosity. A concern for moral values is not nearly enough. Morality apart from generosity solves little. We marvel at Jesus' tenderness when He had an impromptu conversation with the woman at the well, who had five husbands and was then living with a man who was not her husband. Jesus could have given railing accusations for the woman's promiscuity but in His infinite mercy and generosity, He offered living water that would quench the woman's thirst and thus stop her from committing further sin. Lying at the core of the discipler’s work is the value of generosity. It has been said, “To whom much has been given, much more shall be required.” The Lord Himself has done an unparalleled act of generosity when He died on the Cross of Calvary to pay for our sins. Like humility, generosity comes from seeing that everything we have and everything we accomplish comes from God's grace and God's love for us. In essence, people who expect God to be generous with them are generous with their fellows. The Bible says, “...give and it shall be given you, pressed down...shaken together...running over...” Tertullian, a Christian spokesman of the second century, once wrote, “Unlike members of other sects and societies that collected dues and fees to pay for feasts, members of the early Church contributed money voluntarily to a common fund to support orphans abandoned in the streets and garbage dumps. The early Christians brought food, medicine, and companionship to prisoners forced to work in mines, banished to prison islands, or held in jail. Christians even bought coffins and dug graves to bury the poor and criminals whose corpses would otherwise lie unburied beyond the city gates. Such generosity, which ordinarily could be expected only from one's own family, attracted crowds of newcomers to a newfound faith in Christ, despite the risks.”
John Bunyan has said that “You have not lived today until you have done something for someone who can never repay you.” We only give little when we give of our possessions; it is when we give ourselves that we truly give....this is generosity. Winston Churchill once said, “You make a living by what you get. You make a life by what you give.” The real measure of a discipler's life is his capacity to give...giving of self and sources. The generosity that we see in the world today is often times driven by greed and ulterior motive to take something in exchange for a favour given. Giving is a privilege that can transform the heaviest of hearts and wreckage of a life. True giving is not merely an economic exchange; it is a generative act. It does not subtract from what we have; it multiplies the effect we have in the world. Jesus' standard of generosity is not the world's standard “Just give a cup of cold water in my name” He instructs...so little and so simple as to be scarcely noticed. Like the widow’s mite, it is nevertheless a high standard. It demands that we live in awareness of the needy thirst all around us. Generosity is a deliberate act and it has to be decided in the heart. It is a good way to counteract our tendency for greed, selfishness, stealing, hoarding and the fear of lack we might have. It is to make a conscious effort to give and realize that it is not loss but gain. In his concluding appeal to the Corinthian Church, the Apostle Paul in 2 Corinthians 9:6-15 pointed out the benefits that will be reaped as a result of generous giving, which can be summed by these words: bountiful reaping. A close parallel could also be found in Galatians 6:7. Jesus also said a similar thought in Luke 6:38. However, the real reason to give is because one cannot help but give. In fact, this is the way God gave; it was because “For God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten Son...”-John 3:16. May we always be reminded of God's gracious generosity to prompt us to be graciously generous with our material and spiritual resources for the furtherance of the Lord’s work.
My God, keep helping me to be generous with all my soul Since I have known Your kindness in making me whole With Your provision that proves Your supplying role. Let me dwell in Your sovereign plan where I pursue after eternal goal And be generously giving my best with Your assistance-pole! My God, keep helping me to be generous with all my might Since I have seen Your goodness with wisdom’s light With Your favor that reaches beyond neediness’ height. Let me work in Your heavenly vineyard where I serve You with delight And be generously bearing fruits devoid of covetousness-blight! My God, keep helping me to be generous with all my devotion Since I have received Your gift of everlasting life by virtue of my redemption With Your miracle that shows powerful act of blissful transformation. Let me settle in Your sweet fellowship where I worship You midst supplication And be generously offering my utmost sacrifice-consecration! My God, keep helping me to be generous with all my ability Since I have felt Your strength against my incapacity With Your comfort that heals every sinfulness’ infirmity. Let me remain in Your supreme leadership where I follow You for my security And be generously extending help to those with affliction-anxiety! My God, keep helping me to be generous with all my involvement Since I have witnessed Your blessings of genuine enrichment With Your bounty that satisfies despite scarcity’s impediment. Let me abide in Your warm presence where I rest in Your encouragement And be generously cheering others while expressing hopefulness-contentment! My God, keep helping me to be generous with all my gratefulness Since I have enjoyed Your love marked by faithfulness With Your mercy that highlights Your forgiveness. Let me live in Your divine sanctification where I practice holiness And be generously contributing for mission-productiveness!
