from your Pastor WE ARE NOW officially ushered to what our local meteorologists term as Dry Season, or what we usually call as Summer. We can actually feel the scorching heat of the sun; thus, words of caution are given to warn us against the hazards that it can cause to our health. We, believers, are likewise admonished to remain steadfast in our faith in God amidst this oppressive hot weather that we are experiencing. Hence, we must not let spiritual dryness afflict us, and we must not allow the warm climate to draw us toward complacency and laxity in our Christian life. Instead, we should be on fire through God’s power in facing, meeting, and overcoming challenges in “Making Disciples.” We thank God for enabling our Church to continue fulfilling the Great Commission whatever the season is. We praise Him, too, for He is helping us make use of the summer vacation to share the Gospel, win souls, invite people to church, lead the new converts to water DR. ED M. LAURENA baptism, and involve in discipleship, as we worship Him in spirit and in truth and attend Sunday school classes, prayer meetings and fellowships. All our church’s programs and scheduled activities this Summer, which include various Sunday School class retreats, graduation ceremonies, banquets, and the National Baptist Youth Conference, as well as the Daily Vacation Bible School, are all prayed, planned and prepared for to exalt the Saviour, to edify the saints, and to evangelize the sinners. As such, let us decide to be more fervent in our love for the Lord, and to be more diligent in our service to Him. Together, let us be fiery in our commitment to do our part as His disciple, with our concern for the lost who will perish in the eternal fire of hell. We should then grab the opportunities this Summer to serve God, and to “Preach the word; be instant in season, out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort with all longsuffering and doctrine” (II Timothy 4:2).

“There is no greater joy for a teacher than to see his students prosper in the knowledge which they are taught.” Such was the thrust of Rev. Jess Sibug as he claimed to have a fruitful ministry to couples aging 30 to 39. To date, the number of his students involving in the ministry continues to increase. Some joined the Church Choir, Sunday School Teaching, Ushering and some even enrolled in Baptist Heritage Bible College. With an average attendance of 120 every Sunday morning, they gather in the bigger room at the 2nd floor of the Administration Building. There they enjoy listening to the lesson and relating their personal family experiences with the illustrations presented by their teacher. Meanwhile, once a month, husbands and wives combine during the Evening Divided Sunday School Fellowship where couples get to share with the rest of the class their joys, triumphs and even struggles. The class has been very open to counseling opportunities. With this, surely, their bonds are strengthened, thus, resulting to healthy church and family relations. Bless the Lord for such an organized Sunday school program this church implements.
Seven Reasons to Obey
The Lord Jesus Christ saved us by grace through faith in Him. So, apart from the good works that we do, why should we obey him? If there is now no condemnation for those in Christ Jesus and our salvation is eternally secured, why should we strive to obey? 1. It is our duty. Through his death on the cross, Christ has purchased us (Acts 20:28). 2. It is in faith that we believe that God’s commands are for our own good. He loves us and wants to help us, not to give us unnecessary burdens. 3. Obedience involves hope in a future blessing. If there is no future life, then Christianity would be foolish (1 Corinthians 15:14-18). 4. It is to manifest our love for others who will be better off if we obey God than if we do not. God’s instructions are sensible, not arbitrary rules.
They help people get along with each other. 5. It is our love for God that causes us to want to obey Him. He has done so much for us, that we cannot help but be thankful and want to please Him (John 14:15; 1 John 5:3). 6. It is to bring God glory so that others will come to love and glorify Him, too. Obedience serves as a witness to God and the Gospel. Obedience says that God is great and good and wise, and we adore Him. Obedience says that God is important, that He is valuable, and that He deserves our loyalty (Matthew 5:16; Titus 2:5; 1 Peter 2:12; Philippians 1:27). 7. This is the life of the age to come. The Father, Son and Holy Spirit invite us to a life of love and goodness, not a life of selfishness and sin. If we really want that sort of life, then we want it now, not just in the future.

High School Baccalaureate Program Held
M
ARCH 23, 2014 made a mark in CBBC, SPL’s history as it held its first High School baccalaureate program. The occasion was conducted at the 2nd floor of the Old Building. With the theme “Keep That Which Is Committed To Thy Trust” ( I Timothy 6:20), which was expounded by Dr. Ed M. Laurena who gave the challenge, 24 young girls and 9 boys signed covenants and wore their rings as commitment to stay pure before God. Graduations are not endings but new beginnings. High school graduates are to face college as a new chapter in their life’s journeys. They are however reminded that their graduation is not an end to a pure Christian life. The said event aims to preserve the lives of the young people and to lead them toward a future with a victorious Christian life.
CBBA Students Visit The Malacañang
C
ULTIVATING IN THE STUDENTS a spirit of National Cultural Heritage and love for our Nation, CBBA students from Junior Elementary, Junior, and Senior High School capped off the Academic Year’s class-days with an educational and cultural trip to the Malacañang Presidential Museum last April 1, Tuesday. The students and teaching staff went to a guided tour on the archives, antiques, and artifacts which are part of our rich cultural history. It is an immersion into Philippine history not accorded by books or Internet search. Collections of artifacts from the presidency of Emilio Aguinaldo to the present were curated for public viewing in the Museum and Library, currently housed in Kalayaan Hall. Elegant with its high-arched windows typical of the Renaissance-revivalist architecture, Kalayaan Hall is Malacañang Palace’s oldest building. The largest room on the second floor, renovated and renamed Maharlika Hall during President Ferdinand Marcos’ time, served as venue for state dinners and citizens’ assemblies until 2002. The tour provides a peek into the inner chambers and legacies of the 15 Filipinos who at one time or another held the highest office in the land. It brought delight, cultural enrichment, and nationalistic pride to the next Christian generation. May we aim to honor God always through loving and praying for this Country God has blessed us with.

Beloved Teachers Hailed at the BHBC Banquet Night
HEN YOU THINK the school year ends with the typical final exam, well, not in Baptist Heritage Bible College! The Banquet Night, as one of the most awaited event of the year, concludes the academic year of BHBC. This year, it was celebrated last April 1, Tuesday, at the 2nd floor of the CBBC Main Auditorium. Approximately two hundred people were present in the occasion. Although majority of the attendance are students, it cannot be denied that the event was blessed with graduates making up the Alumni Association. More so, the banquet will not be complete without the presence of the members of the Faculty of BHBC, headed by the College President, Dr. Ed M. Laurena, together with his family. It is to these very important people that the students expressed their heartfelt appreciation through the multimedia presentations they have fulfilled in front of the audience. The freshmen rendered a poem entitled “Sakripisyo Nyo’y Kayaman,” while the sophomores pampered the teachers with a well-delivered Balagtasan. The junior students, on the other hand, worked on a comic, musical skit where they spoofed their teachers’ extraordinary qualities and popularized principles. Meanwhile, the very first movie project entitled “Witnesses” was also played during the event. This short film of twenty-five minutes was written, acted on, and directed by the senior students themselves and will pilot the annual series of documented excerpts from the Book of Acts. Moreover, Dr. Gil Laurena, one of BHBC’s first graduates, served as the guest speaker. Taking-off from the theme verse Ephesians 3:17, he challenged everyone to be rooted and grounded in the love of Christ. Hence, a person who truly loves God will surpass every trial and will joyfully live as a Christian, serving the Lord. After indulging in a delectable dinner buffet line up, the event was made complete when personalized tokens were given to the teachers. Not only so, but a through a video entitled “Unsung Heroes,” the faculty were all the more saluted by the students, for not only sharing their time and knowledge but also for investing their lives to them as future preachers and teachers of the faith. God be praised for a whole year of God’s faithfulness in this educational ministry of Christian Bible Bap-

College Baccalaureate Fellowship Enjoyed by Graduating Batch of 2014
HE PARENTS, GUARDIANS AND GUESTS of 25 graduating students from College gathered last Friday, April 4, for a night of thanksgiving and fellowship. Testimonies echoed at the ground floor of the Administration Building as some parents voiced out their joy for the victory God has wrought for them. Meanwhile, there was no room for melancholy in the hearts of the students as they expressed through their wonderful special number how grateful they are to see God’s mighty hand throughout all the trials and temptations. Moreover, students who have been involved in the ministry were given special recognition; hence, two of them were even recipients of the Pastor’s Award for exemplary involvement in the ministry wherein God has called them. Before the sumptuous dinner prepared for everyone, Dr. Ed Laurena, in his preaching inspired by the theme verse, Isaiah 43:2, commended the loving efforts of the parents in supporting their children. He also charged the graduating batch to continue in serving the Lord, bearing in mind that career must not be a hindrance in a fruitful relationship with the Lord Jesus Christ. Congratulations to the graduating batch of 2014; surely, their victories are manifestations that God had been with them, “Through It All.” To Him be glory forever!

To Obey Is Better Than Sacrifice
“… Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice, and to hearken than the fat of rams. For rebellion is as the sin of witchcraft…” -1 Samuel 15:22-23 S PUZZLING AS IT IS, obeying God is better than sacrificing for Him. We are inclined to ask “How can I sacrifice to God without obedience? “ Isn’t the one who sacrifices also obedient? Can you sacrifice to God and still be disobedient? God spoke to Saul and said to him in verse 3 “Now go and smite Amalek, and utterly destroy all that they have, and spare them not; but slay both man and woman, infant and suckling, ox and sheep, camel and ass.” Nonetheless, when Saul came back, he brought the king of the Amalekites and the best of their livestock. Saul reasoned that these things that he brought back were things devoted to God to be sacrificed to Him. However, God was not pleased with Saul. Saul mistakenly thought that sacrificing to God was more important that heeding to what He says. He assumed that although he was commanded to carry out God’s word, it would be alright for him to do as he pleased so long as he brought a sacrifice back. For surely a sacrifice of the best of the Amalekites cattle and sheep would be pleasing to God. God was not pleased with the cattle and sheep. As a matter of fact, He rejected them because Saul’s heart was NOT obedient, even though it was sacrificial. Saul did not obey the Lord and so even the

We will not provide any accommodations for them. greatest sacrifice would not be pleasing to God. Saul could have brought back all the gold and silver along with the king and the herds and flocks, and yet God would still have been angry with him. Saul thought, “You know what, I am going above and beyond what God had said, and bring back the best of the Amalekites, to sacrifice to God.” By doing this, he put his own will above God’s. Many of us are like Saul. We feel that as long as we make good sacrifices for God, He will be pleased. However, we neglect the more important things, like being obedient to a task or mission that He has impressed in our hearts. We do not understand that despite all our giving and doing, we could be in the precarious place of being disobedient to God at the same time. What we give and do may not be acceptable to the Lord. God looked at His people and saw many who gave and served, and yet never obeyed His voice. He has become tired of those who gave and served, but have disobeyed His commands. Our sacrifices have become burdensome to Him because we have made them to be of greater importance than obeying His voice. Obedience is not just an outward display. It is the profound manifestation of the heart attuned to please God genuinely which leads to full obedience. May we, as God’s precious people not harbour reservations for self-preservation. May the Lord help us to be obedient to be used up for His glory.
