from your Pastor

DR. ED M. LAURENA

We praise and thank God for blessing our earnest and energetic efforts in “Making Disciples” by His grace and through His power. However, our desire, together with our diligence, dedication, and determination to make disciples can only be realized if we have a genuine relationship with the Lord, the best Person Who perfectly exemplified meaningful and fruitful discipleship. This June, we are blessed to study in our Sunday School the “The Decision in Making Disciples which Consists of Choosing Right Relationships.” Of course, the very first and most important of all is our relationship with God. Let us learn from our lessons as we strive to strengthen our relationship with our Saviour, with our family members, and with our brethren, so that we can all the more become effective Christians. Meanwhile, I would like to commend all those who supported our High School Camp last week. I believe that the participants can testify that such, because of God’s presence, power, provision, and performance is a life-transforming event. It is my prayer that the Lord will continually work in the lives of our high school students, and to all of us, so that we will be transformed by the renewing of our minds as we “prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect will of God” (Romans 12:2). With the opening of a new Academic Year this month, let us keep on opening our ears to the Word of God. I charge all our students to prioritize still God’s wisdom, and for all of us to value godly education, which is Bible education. In the midst of a busy schedule that is brought up by school activities, let us seek first God, His kingdom and His righteousness. Likewise, let us faithfully do our part and joyfully give our share for the Lord’s work!

DECISION CONSISTS OF A RIGHT RELATIONSHIP WITH GOD

Unang High School Camp, Matagumpay na Ginanap

I. A decision that consists of a right relationship with God will not violate clear teachings from God’s Word. A. Our decision must be based on the intrusive Word of God. B. Our decision must be based on the instructive Word of God. C. Our decision must be based on the inspired Word of God.

1Corinthians 10:31

II. A decision that consists of a right relationship with God will not cause others’ faith to stumble. A. Our actions must cause others to serve God more. B. Our attitude must cause others to love God more. III. A decision that consists of a right relationship with God will not harm the body as the temple of the Spirit of God. A. Our body is a gift from God. B. Our body is the temple of God. C. Our body is to glorify God. IV. A decision that consists of a right relationship with God will truly glorify and ask God to bless it. A. Serving will glorify God. B. Sacrificing will glorify God. C. Service with sacrifice will be blessed by God.

THE BLESSINGS OF DISCIPLESHIP

Religion or Relationship?

R

ELIGION IS DEFINED to be a particular system of faith and worship. Practically, it means a ritual observance of faith to a god. Consequently, when we hear about a certain religion, the next thing that comes to our mind is their long list of do’s and don’ts. Such means that if one takes heed to the list of “Do’s,” he is religious; otherwise, he is a type of a backslider. There are those whose idea of good Christianity is like these: attending church services, giving tithes and offerings, passing out tracts, Bible reading and taking time to pray. On the other hand, smoking cigarettes, drinking alcohol, using bad language make a bad Christian. People tend to enumerate what they do for God, to the point of being technical in accomplishing Christian duties. God, in the first place, does not want to establish religion, for none of those can make a sinner pure and acceptable in His eyes. God, from the very start, wants us to build a relationship with Him. It is a relationship He intended to build out of love and not out of mere law (John 3:16). That is why, He considered us children (John 1:12) right from that moment when we accepted Jesus as our Lord and Saviour. In this relationship we have started with Him, there are certain elements we have to sustain and satisfy to keep our sweet fellowship with Him. If we may notice, the key is COMMUNICATION. Let us hear from God. There is no other better way to execute this but to read the Word of God. We should never accomplish our five-chapter daily reading without getting anything from over a thousand words and a hundred thoughts. We must determine to take by heart the message of God, as Joshua 1:8 instructs. This book of the law shall not depart out of thy mouth; but thou shalt meditate therein day and night, that thou mayest observe to do according to all that is written therein: for then thou shalt make thy way prosperous, and then thou shalt have good success. Let God hear us. We always have our turn to talk transparently unto the Lord. He knows our every thought. He reads our very intent. Praying unceasingly does not mean kneeling all the day long. 1 Thess. 5:17 expresses that venue and time are never a restriction to come to God, that He may hear us, and surely He will answer. Let others hear about God. As we have known Him and His work in us, let us not keep it to ourselves. The love we have from Him must be shared, so others can experience it, too. In fact, our constant walk with the Lord can talk of a wonderful testimony about who God is in our lives. Matt 5:16 encourages us to live a life well-pleasing to God so that the light will shine and the joy can be shared. We can actually keep and continually be guided by the lists of Do’s and Don’ts, but what God requires is our well-founded, faithful and fruitful relationship with Him. It is not religion that we should establish; it must be a relationship with our One, True God and Saviour!

I

THANK THE LORD JESUS CHRIST my Saviour for His grace and mercy. He saved me from the penalty of sin and hell when I accepted Him as my personal Saviour on July 26, 2006. I praise God for using my younger sister who became the first Baptist in our family. She shared with me about the Baptist faith and told me of the good testimony of the Baptist brethren, which encouraged me to attend also. I was so blessed with the great message from the Bible. Such was the very first time that I heard a dynamic preaching and its impact challenged me. I am grateful to the Lord for Pastor Roy Solomon who preached on that Wednesday prayer meeting, and then visited me the following day, and led me to receive the Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. I was thereafter baptized on July 30, 2006 and then became a member of CBBM, Bontoc, Mountain Province. After I got saved, I have really enjoyed the blessings of God, especially in serving Him like in soulwinning, tracts distribution, Bible study, and visiting young Christians with my pastor. All these ministerial activities which I have involved in were used by God to develop my heart to love the souls of men going to eternal hell. By the grace of God, I learned to witness to people publicly and I was glad to see people listening to the Word of God. In 2007, I surrendered my life to God to serve Him with my full decision to study at BHBC of CBBC San Pedro, Laguna. By the grace of God, I graduated. I thank God for CBBC San Pedro and for our beloved Pastor, Dr. Ed Laurena who has a vision to reach the people like me, a native igorot. To God be the glory! -

“Multitudes, multitudes in the valley of decisions: for the day of the LORD is near in the valley of decision.”- Joel 3:14

M

AKING DECISIONS is always associated with taking risks. It forces us to accept responsibility for the success or failure of the choice. We have seen and experienced first-hand how those decisions helped or harmed others. It is therefore vital that we must realize and identify the most reliable source of wisdom that will equip us in our choices, because decisions based on our nature, inclination or preferences frequently produce disastrous consequences. In Genesis 13, Abraham offered the choice of the whole land that rightfully belonged to him to his nephew, Lot. As his response, Lot, with his selfish desire for the most fertile, well-watered plains caused him to settle near the wicked and sinful Sodom and Gomorrah. Abraham, on the other hand, trusted in the promises of God regardless of what Lot decided. Making decisions with the right relationship with God, based on His promises and statutes always brings peace and good success. We are then to consider the following in making decisions: Abhor Pride. Our Pride leads us to exclude God from our decision making us intentionally ignore and thwart His Word and instructions. Isaiah 66:3-4 warns, “...they have chosen their own ways, and their soul delighteth in their abominations. I also will choose their delusions, and will bring their fears upon them; because when I called, none did answer; when I spake, they did not hear: but they did evil before mine eyes, and chose that in which I delighteth not.” 1 Corinthians

3:19 attests “For the wisdom of this world is foolishness with God. For it is written, he taketh the wise in their own craftiness.” Adopt Humility. One of the most difficult factors in decision making is humbling ourselves and admitting that we do not know it all and we cannot do it all. The very fact that we have obtained mercy by grace through faith in Jesus Christ is an evidence that we have humbly admitted our sinfulness and need of a Saviour. It could also be that in the past, we all have made mistaken decisions that we hope we never made. Even Moses, the meekest man who ever lived, ignored God's instructions as chronicled in Numbers 20:8-12. The mighty strong man Samson surrendered his strength as stated in the Book of Judges 16:17-21. The fervent Apostle Peter repeatedly denied knowing Jesus Christ in John 18:25-27. However, all these notable Bible characters humbled themselves by asking and accepting God's forgiveness offered in 1 John 1:9. God, in the Book of Jeremiah 29:11-13, presents us of a success far beyond this world can ever offer, “For I know the thoughts that I think toward you...thoughts of peace...Then shall ye call upon me,...I will hearken unto you. And ye shall seek me, and find me...” Abide in Christ-mindedness. God's direction and wisdom must be sought before any decision is to be made. The Bible confirms in 1 Corinthians 2:16, “For who hath known the mind of the Lord, that he may instruct him? But we have the mind of Christ.” The Lord, through the Spirit, gives us a supernatural wisdom that will govern each of our decisions...if we just allow Him. It is shameful that a child of God be found in a miserable predicament because of neglecting the very powers made available to Him. All our resolve and testimony to give God glory will be weakened by a deliberate disregard for this very power. There is nothing more misdirected than a self-directed life. Without the leading of God, the consequences of our every decision is bound for misery. May the salvation we possess through Christ possess our very souls to live for Him.

Amen.
