VOLUME 23 ISSUE 29 JULY 21
from your Pastor
DR. ED M. LAURENA
God’s ministry never runs out of work to do. Such is affirmed by the establishment, growth, and progress of our church. However, though our church, in its 34 years of existence, has been doing its part in fulfilling the Great Commission, there are still souls to be reached, mission fields to be reached and lives to be ministered to. Truly, this world is still in need of Christian labourers who will help accomplish that great task, which certainly glorifies the Lord and lifts the name of Christ. One great reason God saved us from hell aside from His love for us, is His desire to see us doing His will. He indeed desires to use our strengths and our resources, by His grace, so the whole world will know the love of the Saviour. It is then our utmost duty to make His desires be accomplished. While the devil tries his best to sidetrack and discourage us, because he wants to steal God’s glory, let us persevere faithfully in lifting up the name of Christ. Finally, I rejoice to honor every college student in our church today. Stay faithful in the Lord and be obedient to fulfill His will in your lives as you work hard in your studies. Have a blessed Sunday!

LABOR THAT LIFTS GOD’S NAME Beata B. Agustin
Let’s labor by God’s compassion In prioritizing His great commission With His love’s direction along His Word’s instruction To lift His name thru our constant devotion Midst strifes’ bitter reaction and hatred’s cold intrusion. Let’s labor by God’s kindness In showing His marvelous graciousness With His care’s cheerfulness along His comfort’s gentleness To lift His name thru our fruitful goodness Midst apathy’s conceited foolishness and critics’ unconcerned rudeness. Let’s labor by God’s empowerment In performing according to His ready enablement With His call’s appointment along His commands’ reinforcement To lift His name thru our diligent commitment Midst idleness’ empty investment and slothfulness’ shameful achievement. Let’s labor by God’s mercy In sacrificing upon His satisfying sufficiency With His help’s restoration along His forgiveness’ clemency To lift His name thru our righteous persistency Midst temptations’ perilous insurgency and trials’ grave fervency. Let’s labor by God’s leadership In submitting to His perfect workmanship With His salvation’s relationship along His fellowship’s stewardship To lift His name thru our grateful worship Midst worldliness’ sinful friendship and materialism’s selfish partnership. Let’s labor by God’s wisdom-light In testifying about His redeeming might With His scriptures’ guidance along His revelation’s insight To lift His name thru our holy faith-height Midst prayerlessness’ coward flight and pride’s oppressive blight. Let’s labor by God’s victory In serving for His kingly glory With His sovereignty’s history along His Gospel’s story To lift His name thru our soulwinning territory Midst failures’ injurious misery and frustrations’ vengeful fury.

“These were more noble than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness of mind, and searched the scriptures daily, whether those things were so.” – Acts 17:11
L
ike the believers in Berea, we as Collegians desire to be excellent in receiving God’s Word in our hearts with readiness and eagerness and to be diligent in searching it on a daily basis. We in the College Sunday School class of CBBC are composed of college students, who study either in a secular university or in the Bible college. We have two divided classes – the College Young Men and the College Young Ladies. Our College Young Men’s class, led by Mr. Emmanuel Villarosa, has an average attendance of 80 students every Sunday morning. Likewise, our College Young Ladies’ class, taught by Ms. Karen Paraoan, has an average attendance of 80-90 young ladies as well. During our divided fellowships on Sunday evenings, the Young Men have an attendance of 40 while the Ladies have 50. Every last Sunday of the
month, we hold our combined class assembly filled with fun, food, and fellowship. There are 78 Collegians who are actively involved in the various ministries of our Church such as Sunday School Teaching Ministry, Choir Ministry, and Ministry for the Deaf and Mute. While it is true that God has not called everyone into His service, we believe that all of us should “present our bodies a living sacrifice.” It is up to God in which way He wishes to use us, but we must be willing to follow Him and be yielded to let Him do anything He wants with our lives. Ultimately, we want to enter adulthood with a developed heart for God and surrendered to His will. To God be the glory!
Lifting to,and and LiftingUp, Up, Loyalty Loyalty to, Looking on Looking ontotothe the One True One TrueLight, Light, Jesus Christ
In a needy generation where most Baptist Churches have become man-centered, pleasure-oriented, and entertainment-driven, the Word of God incessantly challenges us to evaluate ourselves as to whom or what do we lift up and stay loyal to. History shows that ministries rarely stay true to their founding principles with the same fervour for more than a generation or two. Such is a sad statistics but we are to be thankful and hopeful to be grounded in the belief and trust in the unchanging God, affirmed as immutable in Hebrews 13:8 which states, “Jesus Christ the same yesterday, and today, and forever.” We are then admonished through the Spirit in verse 9 to “Be not carried about with divers and strange doctrines. For it is a good thing that the heart be established with grace.” Our unchanging loyalty determines our faith’s latitude. Let us be loyal to Christ. The God of the Scriptures has repeatedly removed opportunities for great prophets, kings, and armies of God to vaunt themselves over victories accomplished. Few explicit examples of these were the victory of the 300-manned army of Gideon over the Midianites in Judges Chapter, and the fall of the wall of Jericho through the unquestioning obedience of weaponless or unarmed soldiers in Joshua Chapter 24. These victories prompted God's people to praise and lift up God's name because it was indeed of the Lord's doing that they were not consumed but were instead triumphant. Jesus likewise said in John 8:12, “I am the Light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the Light of Life.” Christ is that Light and He is also that Life. If we follow Christ, we would consequently lift Him up and will draw all men to Him. Let us lift up the name of Jesus Christ. We are then asked to look...“To the law and the testimony: if they speak not according to this word, it is because there is no light in them.” (Isaiah 8:20). If we are looking for truth and light, there is only one place to search. Jesus prayed in John 17:17, “Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth.” We are aware that Christianity today is in a downward spiral, engaging in worldly trends and attractions in the guise of winning people to Christ by blending with the crowd. Fruitfulness must not compromise faithfulness to biblical doctrines. The Lord alone will bring fruition to our faithfulness to Him. Let us look to Christ. We are exhorted to be salt and light, a preserver and a guide in this sphere of darkness in our midst, impacting and influencing the world with Christ's righteousness and truth. The greatest challenge is to recognize God as Creator, the Source of all that we have, and to proclaim His perfect and infallible Word. So then, we will appropriately lift Him up, be loyal to Him and look to Him over and above all that is in the world. Amen.
Lift up Jesus!

Our purpose is not to gain honor, glory, or praise for ourselves, but to bring glory to the Lord.
n his day, Charles Spurgeon was probably the most famous preacher in the world. The crowds of people who wanted to hear him preach were so large that before the church was able to erect a building with enough seating, they rented the Royal Surrey Music Hall which seated ten thousand people. For a number of years, tickets were required to get in to hear Spurgeon preach. The story is told that a visitor from America, eager to hear the famous “prince of preachers,” convinced a friend to get a ticket for him.
After the message concluded, the American stood in the vestibule of the church talking to his English friend. He did not know that Spurgeon was standing nearby listening. The Englishman asked what his friend thought of the service, and he replied, “What a preacher!” According to the story, Spurgeon began to weep. A church member asked him what was wrong and Spurgeon said, “I wish he had said, ‘What a Saviour!’” Our purpose is not to gain honor, glory, or praise for ourselves, but to bring glory to the Lord. Yet often we fall into the trap of wanting people to recognize how special, gifted, hard-working, and devoted we are—so we tell them. The temptation to make sure our efforts are recognized by others puts us in a dangerous place. Anyone who is spending time bragging on himself is walking in the pathway of pride, and that path leads to destruction. Jesus said, “And I, if I be lifted up from the earth, will draw all men unto me” (John 12:32). That is primarily a statement of truth about His work through His death on the cross, but it is also true of our service for Him: when we lift Jesus up rather than ourselves, men and women are attracted to Him.
