VOLUME 23 ISSUE 35 Sept. 1
from your Pastor
DR. ED M. LAURENA
To God be the glory for what He accomplished in our lives and in our Church this past month of August! We thank Him likewise for blessing us again with another month to use for His glory! This September, we will dwell on the theme, "Leaning on the Wonderful Saviour," focusing on some of God’s attributes. I pray that every member would know God more personally through these lessons and through the preachings, because the more we know Him, the more we will serve Him! Meanwhile, I thank you, dear members, for showing your appreciation by making my 40th year in the ministry last week a memorable one. I also praise God for your desire to involve in our Nehemiah Project. It is only by His grace that I am still in the ministry, and I desire to serve Him even more in the years to come as He allows me together with my family. I pray that God will make our church ministry more fruitful in producing more lives that are changed. That is why through our new building project, I believe that we can reach more people and glorify God more. Let us continue partnering together for His glory!

40years in the ministry:
Truly a manifestation of God's Greatness
T
his year 2013 marks a major milestone in the life of our dear Pastor, Dr. Ed Laurena, which is truly a manifestation of God’s greatness. As he finishes his forty years in the ministry and enters into another decade of servant leadership, our Pastor thanks and praises God Who has wonderfully blessed him, the Church family and his family as well. God’s grace and power have made Dr. Ed the church leader that he is today. He is a pastor who exemplifies the combination of quality and longevity in his ministry-endeavour. Indeed, God's enabling made possible Dr. Ed's longevity to practice servant-leadership, promote churchstability and produce ministries of effective quality for the Lord’s glory. While trusting God always to overcome various hurdles, discouragements, and setbacks associated with godly pursuits, Dr. Ed constantly leads the people of God to depend on the Lord and to love Him wholeheartedly. Consequently, his influence helps the church members grow in faith, making them spiritually mature and settled. Thus, over the years, God has used our Pastor to build lives, as seen in believers who are spiritually growing up, and in the ministries that are constantly expanding, not only in the church homebase but in far-reaching missions and outreaches. Dr. Ed’s evident dedication to the Saviour allows him to be wholly devoted to his family, the church and to them who are ministers of the Gospel. He looks back when things got tough, as they sometimes do in the ministry; he looks back at God's call in the year 1973 as a reminder that he is here ultimately for God's glory. Such revival-causing reflections with joyful gratitude help him weather storms and keep him focused on God's plans instead of his own. Our Pastor has unceasingly remained steadfast as a servant-leader, while continuing to be a wise innovative visionary simply because he never uses anything but the King James Bible as his foundation and he always excitedly strives to benchmark the hallmarks of the faith. Ephesians 4:1116 says, “...For the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ...” One of his missions as an undershepherd is to equip church workers and members to contribute to the work of the Lord and for the next generation. This is vitally important because he sees the value of the ministry in equipping the saints. Always bearing in mind that our primary duty is obedience to the Lord's call to please Him, our Pastor incessantly emphasizes that the main thing is the salvation of the lost, baptizing and discipling them for Christian living and service. It is our prayer that the Lord will grant our Pastor a long and sanctified life for the furtherance of the Gospel and for the work of His vineyard... all for God’s glory.
Dr. Ed launched "Let us rise up and build for God's glory" Nehemiah Project
T
hirty-four years ago, this expanse of land in which these various CBBC church building now stand was just a grassy desolation. Over the years, the Lord has made a beacon of light to thousand of lost souls here and beyond through the Christian Bible Baptist Church San Pedro, Laguna. The Lord has accomplished feats humanly impossible for the Church family to handle and overcome by itself. “A growing church is always in transition.” Such is oftentimes heard from our Pastor. In this world of constant transition and transformation, the average person is almost always adamant to change. Change requires effort and sacrifice, without which progression is impossible to attain. It requires aligning our misguided priorities. It requires redefining our thwarted perception of a great God and His mighty works for man. It requires real worship to an awesome God that is over and above all that we could ever imagine. It requires selfless submission to the purposes of God in a believer’s life. It requires faith that when one ventures into the unknown, either he will have something to step on or he would be given wings to fly. When the people of God were led out of Egypt to go to the promised land under the most dire of circumstance, the Lord put into action the cooperation of the wind and the sea. “Faith is a knowledge within the heart beyond the reach of proof,” quoted one Baptist preacher. This year, the Nehemiah project, which is an expansive vision of providing space for equipping, training and boosting attendance for Gospel evangelization and church growth spiritually and numerically, was enthusiastically launched by our Pastor last Sunday, August 25. It is primarily and essentially for the lost souls of men, for the building of marred lives for God's glory, and to be an emblem of God's work. The anticipated completion of this project will be a tangible evidence of the faith of God's people within CBBC, SPL. It is a manifestation that we as Christians and a Filipino could not be subjected to the limitations of a third-world economy as long as we are fully dependent on God's spiritual and material resources. May our hearts be spiritually challenged and may our lives be a beacon of light to this lost and dying world.
G O D ’ s G R E AT N E S S
AGAINST MAN’S DEPRAVITY “When I consider thy heavens, the work of thy fingers, the moon and the stars, which thou hast ordained; What is man, that thou art mindful of him? and the son of man, that thou visitest him?” King David echoes our deepest wonders here in Psalms 8:3-4. In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth, the sea and all that is in them. Since the dawn of creation, God's attributes are seen and known by all. As an outstanding design points to a gifted designer, our amazing universe reveals the glory of an awesome Creator. God’s wonders surround us and this marvel reveals much about our Creator. Through creation, we take a glimpse of His power, His wisdom, His majesty and care. It is speaking to those who will listen. “Lift up your eyes on high, and behold who hath created these things, that bringeth out their host by number: he calleth them all by names by the greatness of his might, for that he is strong in power; not one faileth,” Isaiah 40:26. The Bible explains that there is One God, Creator, and the Source of all life and energy. The Creation displays the power of God. Wherever we turn, the Creator's energizing power is unmistakable. He wisely guides the stars in their courses above. He formed the majestic mountains. He maintains the beneficial seasons, and in His hands is the life of every living thing. Indeed, these are mere edges to all His ways and we may not understand all this great cumulative power. We can only stand in awe of this great God. Psalms 90:2 says “Before the mountains were brought forth, or ever thou hadst formed the earth and the world, even from everlasting to everlasting, thou art God.” It is scientifically studied that the energy released from the sun in one nanosecond is infinitely greater than the energy produced by human inventions and technologies since the time of Adam. The visible universe contains about a hundred billion of galaxies, and each galaxy is about millions of trillions of miles wide. Each galaxy contains
about hundreds of billions of stars and planets. We live in a comparatively minute speck of a wonderful planet called Earth. The Bible declares that man is incapable of determining the exact number of stars and planets. Though incomprehensible, Psalms 147:4-5 says “He telleth the number of the stars; he calleth them all by their names. Great is our Lord, and of great power: his understanding is infinite.” Truly, the heavens declare the glory of God. However, these ratios present only a sliver of God's mighty power and we can only say “Let all the earth fear the Lord.” The advent of technological advances and discoveries within the last century clearly revealed that from the macrocosm of an immense universe to the microcosm of an infinitesimal, intricate, and organized atom that composes our cells and other things, evidences the God “Who being the brightness of his glory, and the express image of his person, and upholding all things by the word of his power, when he had by himself purged our sins, sat down on the right side of the Majesty on high.” (Hebrews 1:3). It is undeniable that God created a universe of unlimited energy. Essentially, whichever means we adorn and professionalize ourselves, we cannot do anything to do away with our depraved stature. However, though the universe, the creation, and the human race is marred by the curse of sin, the Creator's wisdom, beauty and love have made provision for His gift of Light and Salvation to all. All these should invoke a sense of reverence and awe in our hearts. The Bible said that the fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, the fear of the Lord is to hate evil and the fear of the Lord leads to life. Our proper response to God's authority therefore should be to seek His will, abide in Him, worship Him, seek His mercy and forgiveness, and to serve Him fervently. May we, as children of God, sanctify His Name forever.
CBBC HOSTED SPIRITED SPORTSFEST 2013
W
hile the rallying public spent the National Heroes Day last August 26 in the Luneta Park for the Million People March against the notorious Pork Barrel, a good number of church folks from CBBC San Pedro, Dasmarinas, Tanza Cavite, and Sta. Cruz took a breather from the literal climate change for a worthwhile beneficial and needful rest and recreation at the Muntinlupa Sports Complex for CBBC's annual Sporting Festivity. Primarily aiming for good Christian fellowship and not competition, the event started with a word of prayer and a short exhortation from Rev. Jess Sibug on the Scriptural passage of I Timothy 4:8, “For bodily exercise profiteth little: but godliness is profitable unto all things, having promise of the life that now is, and of that which is to come.” The players were encouraged to have good teamwork and amiable spirit and to enjoy the event in a manner that is lively, lawful, and loving. The excited players were demographically grouped into six teams namely: CBBC South Group, CBBC North Group, CBBCO Dasmarinas Cavite, CBBC Tanza Cavite, CBBC Sta. Cruz, and the tenacious CBBC Deaf and Mute Group. The victors in each event were well-represented from each of the five teams but the CBBC North Group bagged most of the wins. We bless the Lord for godly camaraderie and sportsmanship.
BYCM Big Friday Coming up on September 6, this annual event hosted by the Baptist Youth Fundamentalist and its ministerial branch, the Baptist Youth Campus Ministry, thrills young people from secular high schools and colleges as they are being invited and brought to church for a day of fun in fellowship and favors from the Word of God. This year the Big Friday is themed “Carry the Light”, inspired by 2 Corinthians 4:6. The workers are geared towards reaching the goal of 250 in attendance. Parents and teachers are also expected to come.
GOD IS AMAZING “Yes, our universe is very large, but there is still more to it than what you probably realize. Most people have never considered the amount of energy needed to create a single atom. Powerful bonds hold atoms together and when these bonds are broken, a tremendous amount of energy is released. This energy can be calculated by using Albert Einstein’s historic E=mc2 (See footnote #2 below for more information). For example, the atomic energy stored in 1 gram (.035 ounce) of matter is equal to the power obtained from 700,000 gallons of octane fuel. (Source: ChemCom, page 309.) For a more dramatic example, the atomic energy stored in the atoms of a 200-pound man is equal to 157,307 atomic bombs (the ones dropped on Hiroshima). For you weightlifters, that's the same as bench-pressing a 500-pound weight over 12 million billion times. If there is that much atomic energy in a 200-pound man, imagine how much energy was needed to create the whole universe. Imagine the magnitude of the God who created all this. I find it amazing that people actually have the audacity to say that they will boldly stand up to God when they enter eternity. They obviously don’t comprehend the God who created them. Just as our minds can’t comprehend the magnitude and complexity of the universe, it can’t comprehend the magnitude and complexity of God. Obviously, God is far greater and more powerful than the universe He created. Even though our universe is incredibly staggering in size, it is probably just a minuscule dot in comparison to God’s actual greatness and power. I can’t even begin to imagine how great, majestic, powerful, and awesome our God must be.”
One Greater "At that time Jesus went on the sabbath day through the corn; and his disciples were an hungred, and began to pluck the ears of corn and to eat. But when the Pharisees saw it, they said unto him, Behold, thy disciples do that which is not lawful to do upon the sabbath day. But he said unto them, Have ye not read what David did, when he was an hungred, and they that were with him; How he entered into the house of God, and did eat the shewbread, which was not lawful for him to eat, neither for them which were with him, but only for the priests? Or have ye not read in the law, how that on the sabbath days the priests in the temple profane the sabbath, and are blameless? But I say unto you, That in this place is one greater than the temple." Matthew 12:1-6 young boy was traveling by airplane to see his grandparents for his summer vacation, and as he found his seat, he discovered an older gentleman sitting next to him. Not particularly excited about flying alone, the boy took out some coloring sheets he had received in Sunday school the day before. Noticing the boys' sheets, the older gentleman, who happened to be a Christian, leaned over to him and said, "Young man, I see you are learning about the greatness of God. Tell you what, if you can name for me something God can do, I'll give you this apple here." The boy looked up at the man, looked down for a minute, then replied, "Sir, if you can tell me something that God cannot do, I'll give you a whole bushel of apples."

It's precious to see the faith of little children. They believe God can do anything (and He can). Yet so often as we grow up, we face reality and seem to adopt a more "practical" view of life. We believe what we see and trust what can be proven, losing that childlike faith in our Father. But as is seen in our verses today, there is One greater in this place. The story our verses relay is a familiar series of events. Christ's disciples contradict a traditional practice of the Jewish religion, the religious leaders seek to trick Jesus with such "evidence", and Christ teaches them that He has come to fulfill the law. Here Jesus teaches them "that in this place is one greater than the temple." God is greater than any tradition, earthly power, or human problem. God is not restricted by facts of science, laws of reality, or constraints of our world. Think about that for a minute. What a doctor or scientist tells you is fact is only a result of many tests and physical proofs. But God gives us proof in His Word that He is greater, and His ways are higher than the ways of man. Has your faith in God dwindled? While perhaps you would say that your faith is strong, when is the last time you completely trusted in God, despite what man said could or couldn't be done? After all, a faith that cannot be tested cannot be trusted. God has proven time and again in His Word that He is greater than any problem-He parted the Red Sea, shut the mouths of lions, preserved three men in a fiery furnace, and used a virgin to bring His Son into the world. Science tells us those things can't happen. Yet God has proven that He is greater than the laws of logic. What has limited your faith in God? Don't allow the unbelief of others to discourage your faith in God. Remember that greater is He that is in you than he that is in the world (1 John 4:4). Take time today to renew your faith in God, and remember that even when others say something can't be done, in this place is One greater.

4. Ibahagi sa iba si Kristo Hesus.
