from your Pastor

DR. ED M. LAURENA

“It is a good thing to give thanks unto the LORD, and to sing praises unto thy name, O most High” (Psalm 92:1). Such is what our hearts would like to express as we come to worship God in spirit and in truth this Sunday. With our God-wrought victorious church-wide soulwinning along with His granted blessings for the past week, all we can do is thank and praise God as we give Him the best of our offerings, service, and testimony by His grace and power. The great report on the revival and gladness caused by our month-long Gospel tracts’ distribution and soulwinning efforts as a church every afternoon shows that we really have a church that cares for souls, that supports the discipleship program, and that loves the Lord. As your Pastor, I am so blessed to witness your excitement, eagerness and enthusiasm to involve in the fulfillment of the Great Commission. Let us all continue supporting the advancement of God’s kingdom through our diligent area participation in soulwinning, faithful attendance in all church services, fruitful spiritual growth, and shining influence for God’s glory. Moreover, we must make the most of what our Sunday School lessons and our worship services’ sermons are teaching us to make us more committed, effective and cheerful Christians who are enjoying the benefits of discipleship. Today, let us “Enter his gates with thanksgiving, and into his courts with praise: be thankful unto him, and bless his name. For the LORD is good; his mercy is everlasting; and his truth endureth to all generations” (Psalm 100:4-5).

S

JUNIOR GRADERS SUNDAY SCHOOL LAUNCHED PEER-TO-PEER GOSPEL SHARING

T

HE JUNIOR GRADERS’ Sunday School Children’s Department, in the hope of putting into a practical and functional use the training and lessons they are teaching the students, has launched last Sunday its Peer-to-Peer Gospel Sharing for their First Time Visitors and New Converts. Equipped with the lessons, proper materials and guidance of the teachers, the students are motivated to serve God with a much greater and nobler purpose with the compassionate heart of the Lord Jesus Christ. They are able to minister the Gospel to the visitors and are given the privilege of connecting with these newcomers which is a fresh start. There is an inspiring quote which said, “Education is not the filling of a pail but the lighting of a fire.” May this part of our Sunday School program and training effectively inculcate into practice the Bible knowledge these precious students have. To God be all the glory.

FOUR THRIVING SUNDAYS OF SOULWINNING AND TRACTS DISTRIBUTION JOYFULLY ACCOMPLISHED

O

N ITS FOURTH Sunday afternoon, the soul-conscious folks of CBBC San Pedro flocked through Biñan City to its saturation drive of 100,000 Gospel Tracts Distribution and Soulwinning. More than 800 fervent brethren took part in the one-on-one Gospel Evangelization in the streets, highways, establishments and homes while others have been very passionate in giving out Gospel Tracts to the townspeople. Meanwhile, our precious jewels of the Church, the senior citizens, remained in the church auditorium and were on their knees begging for God’s enabling and the Holy Spirit’s convicting while the

rest were on the field. That Sunday yielded 1, 200 professions of faith to Christ as Lord and Personal Saviour, and about 16, 500 Gospel Tracts were excitedly given out. For the month-long Sunday soulwinning drive, inclusive of the regular Thursdays and Saturdays’ Soulwinning and Visitation schedules, we, as a church by God’s help, have won about 4,900 precious souls for Christ and distributed more than 100,000 Gospel Tracts. We thank God for the fervor and the Spirit of God working among us to press on as we await God’s glorious coming. To God be the glory!

THE BLESSINGS OF DISCIPLESHIP

A

What Does Our Giving Have to Say?

D

AVID SPOKE TO the great men of Israel, to engage them to contribute toward the building of the temple. We are likewise today exhorted in our congregation to provoke one another to love and do good works, which can surely be manifested in giving. We have learned to give because God showed for us ensamples in the Bible and in this church. Since that day of our first-time giving for the Lord’s work, our developed attitude throughout time speaks loudly about many things:

C

OMPASSION FOR THE LOST. The usher in his offertory prayer always pleads for God’s grace in our giving so that whatever we drop in the offering basket shall be used for the furtherance of the ministry and Gospel. The edifices we are able to build through our offerings cannot change lives, but the activities and happenings inside them do. When David said “… for the palace is not for man but for the Lord God” (1 Chron 29:1), he meant that the temple will soon accommodate people who want to experience God and “worship him in spirit and in truth” (John 4:24).

C

ARE ABOUT THE LEGACY. The extent of our giving will define what is in store for our children. As we pour ourselves out for a church project, we mean our utmost intent of preserving the old fashioned assembly of Baptist believers. The Bible teaches us prudence such that “… where your treasure is, there will your heart be also” (Matt 6:21). The investment of time, talents, toils and treasures we throw in God’s work shall pay off not only in our present time but in the age of our children.

C

OMMITMENT TO THE LORD. Our giving more so speaks of our faith. When we adhere to our commitment to the Lord, we believe that He is able to replenish everything; thus, we are giving Him more room for His blessings upon us. Our faithfulness in giving paves the way for God to fulfill His promise in Malachi 3:10 “…I will open you the windows of heaven, and pour you out a blessing, that there shall not be room enough to receive it.” Whichever of these things that your giving wants to testify, God shall be after the motive of your heart. Let it be like that of David’s motivation which was stated in verse 14 of this same chapter in 1 Chronicles, “for all things come of thee, and of thine own have we given thee.” We learned to give because God Himself taught by His example when “he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life” (John 3:16). We can never outgive the Lord, but by mere understanding of His gift of salvation to vile sinners such as us, we may all together grow in perfection as far as giving is concerned.

Volunteer Teachers Attended CEF Seminar “A child of five, if properly instructed, can as truly believe and be regenerated as an adult.” This statement quoted by Charles H. Spurgeon in one of his sermons detests the famous

thought of many people underestimating the capacity of a child to understand the message of salvation at his tender age. It is also in this light that CEF or Child Evangelism Fellowship, since 1937, reaches many parts of the earth for the salvation of children. Last Monday, September 8, about two hundred volunteers from our church assembled at the Pacita Astrodome and attended the seminar about teaching children in elementary and high school levels hosted by the Office of the City Mayor and facilitated by the workers from CEF. It is indeed a blessed opportunity that CEF’s catering to NCR-South has been extended to San Pedro City, hence supporting the vision of CBBC’s beloved pastor, Dr. Ed Laurena and that of the City government, which is to establish a generation of young people who fear and obey God. The occasion was opened up in prayer and a remarkable speech by Dr. Ed. He charged the participants to anticipate God's mighty use of their lives through this ministry. After which, the rationale of evangelizing the children was further explained with Biblical bases. Sis. Net Rosete, a fulltime worker of CEF on the other hand, reviewed various methods of presenting the Gospel to elementary students. She also exposed some real-life situations which hinder many of these young people to understand the most important message of all time. In the afternoon, Bro. Elmer Rañola expounded on the curriculum of CEF and the ethical approach to frequently asked questions. One thing that is more than a blessing is the commonality of using the King James Bible as the reference of every lesson which will be good for the whole academic year! Excitement filled the hearts of all the volunteer teachers who are looking forward to God's power to work in the classes where they will be assigned to teach. Surely, this endeavor must be showered with our full material and spiritual support as we win a multitude of believers which may begin with a child.

MINISTRY IN FOCUS

NG NEW CONVERTS’ class ay binubuo ng first time visitors at new converts na estudyante mula Grade 4 hanggang Grade 6.

God’s Great Granting Requires Our Great Giving “I have shewed you all things, how that so labouring ye ought to support the weak, and to remember the words of the Lord Jesus, how he said, It is more blessed to give than to receive.” - Acts 20:35

O

UR MODERN WORLD does not believe that “It is more blessed to give than to receive.” We may easily mumble that phrase but if we are honest, we more often wonder how can it make us happier to GIVE than to GET? We question the truthfulness of God’s Word that giving will lead to happiness. Indeed, Jesus wants His followers to be rich! He is absolutely sharp in challenging us as Christians that we should store up for ourselves treasures in heaven. To get rich in this life or to attempt to store up treasure in this world is utter stupidity according to God. The reason for this is that this world and everything in it is doomed to destruction. Even if that does not happen in our lifetime, we are certainly going to die one day. Just as we brought nothing into this world, we will most definitely take nothing with us when we die. It is therefore foolish to strive for accumulating wealth in this world. Not only is this world fleeting, but Jesus taught that wherever our treasure is, there will our hearts be also. Do we really want our hearts to be entangled to a world that lies under God's wrath? If we love money, how will we ever find it in our hearts to love God? We cannot serve both. Either our Christian life will be the most important thing to us, or, sadly, our work and feeling of lack will take over most of our decisions. Thus, we must bear in mind important biblical principles of giving for and through the Lord’s work.

G

IVING IS SOWING. Proverbs 11:24 warns, “There is that scattereth, and yet increaseth; and there is that withholdeth more than is meet, but it tendeth to poverty.” A farmer may deem it an unnecessary burden to apportion a considerable amount of grain for the sowing instead of having it for food consumption. However, if wilfully neglected, there will never be the possibility of another harvest…thereby famine. Our refusal to sow, and participate in the ministry of giving for the Lord’s work will inevitably result in a spiritual and material famine.

G

IVING IS STEWARDSHIP. It is really a question of whether we are managing our lives or we are being managed by the flurry and clamour of everyday life. The Scriptural passage in Luke 12:42 affirms, “And the Lord said, Who then is that faithful and wise steward, whom his lord shall make ruler over his household, to give them their portion of meat in due season?”

G

IVING IS SAVING. Our proper apportioning of our talents and resources wards away any opportunity of wastage. It prevents us from selfishness and promotes godliness. The truth of the matter is that we waste so much on our pleasures and frivolous pursuits. Giving is an act of self-discipline that curbs our natural leaning towards self-gratification. Giving shows a true grasp of the Gospel. The person who truly comprehends the amazing fact that Christ gave up the riches of heaven and became poor for our sakes in order to make us spiritually rich beyond our imagination will never slack in giving. Giving enables the preaching and teaching of the Word to take place. Giving truly is a privilege for God’s people. It is an act of praise to God. In the letter to the Corinthians, Paul explains that just as Christ's sacrifice gives people reason to praise God, so people will praise God for their giving. Giving make us partners with God's aim in this world to bring everyone under the headship of Jesus Christ. By giving to the local church, we partner with Christ in His mission to grow His people both in numbers and in maturity through the preaching of God’s Word. May we be great givers for God’s glory.

Amen.
