from your Pastor “Great is the LORD, and greatly to be praised; and his greatness is unsearchable” (Psalm 145:3). We thank God that in His greatness, He is always ready to help us, His children whom He has saved, for our sanctification and satisfaction. With His mercy and truth upholding us, we can truly become victorious Christians in treading the path of righteousness, and in running the race set before us. Thus, we should overcome by His power the hindrances against our spiritual growth. As a church claiming Christ’s authority with His presence-perpetuity based on Matthew 16:18, our race track is along the fulfilment of the Great Commission expressed in Matthew 28:18-20. By God’s grace and through His wisdom, we will continue running the race, and we will persevere to run well. We must pursue emphasizing biblical instruction, while endeavouring constantly to evangelize the sinners, edify the saints, and exalt the Saviour. Likewise, we must not just achieve the “three to thrive” goal through Sunday School, morning worship and afternoon worship attendance, but more so, attain the DR. ED M. LAURENA “four to flourish” aim by coming to all church services including the Wednesday prayer meeting. In running the Christian race, we have to follow the Lord and focus on Him to avoid worldly distractions and to get over fleshly obstacles, while freeing ourselves from people who may hinder us. Such we can do by forgiving those who sin against us with God’s compassion, forgetting those who criticize us in doing God’s work, and forsaking those who lead us from God’s will. We must bear in mind that what matters most is not how fast we run, but how well we run in reaching our objective of expanding the kingdom of God. Today and in the coming days, we must altogether persist through God’s strength, sustenance and Scriptures, as we “...run with patience the race that is set before us; looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith” (Hebrews 12:1-2).

BHBC Enjoyed the 2-day Sportsfest

T

HRILLED BY THEIR anticipation for a worthwhile break from various academic and ministerial works, the students of Baptist Heritage Bible College (BHBC) engaged in sports last September 15 and 16 (Monday and Tuesday) amidst the misty breeze and minimal rain showers. The students presented themselves in 4 different colors which represented their respective teams named after some of the Bible’s most renowned disciples: Team Joshua (Aqua Blue), Team Elisha (Black), Team Paul (Neon Green), and Team Timothy (Light Gray). The 2-day Sportsfest kicked off at the Muntinlupa Sports Complex where most of the outdoor games where highlighted. Rev. Duke Lumictin, on the onset of the event reminded the collegians through Proverbs 26:19 to keep the right spirit in playing. Indeed, they lived up to such remark as everybody was delighted to participate in all 34 events. The first day was concluded with an exciting basketball game between BHBC’s finest players and the visiting brethren from Sta. Cruz. Also, some CBBA students dropped by and displayed agility as they contended for the win against the elder brothers from BHBC. The second day started with the flag raising initiated by the team leaders who ran from a point in Pacita 1B and headed towards Satellite Sports Complex which was the venue of the remaining sports’ finales. It was a joy to hear the Word of God through Rev. Meljun Laurena, who, in his morning devotion shared thoughts from Psalm 57:7. He charged the members of student body to give their heart in everything they do in the ministry. Performing well in sports is good but there is a more important calling that requires a heart that is fixed in the Lord. Although threatened by a very heavy rain before noontime, the students continued to be highly spirited in finishing the indoor and outdoor games. After the championship round in the Tug-ofWar event, the crowd went loud and wild as they shouted for their bet in a match between the selected students and members of the faculty. It was a fair win for the students who won over their teachers

by strength and strategy in pulling the rope. Meanwhile, the ladies from Team Timothy swept their way to the top as they triumphed over Team Paul in Volleyball. On the other hand, the men proved basketball to be an all-time favorite sport as a close fight was exhibited by Team Elisha and Team Joshua. The latter group (for which the BHBC President, Dr. Ed Laurena played) prevailed as the champion. The momentum continually heats up as the teams wait for the announcement of winners in the awarding ceremony which will be held on Monday, September 22. God be praised for the godly fellowship and good sportsmanship which He authored in the hearts of all who participated; all the more, to Him be the glory for 148 souls won by the students in two different venues.

TESTS OF CHARACTER Proverbs 10:9 He that walketh uprightly walketh surely: but he that perverteth his ways shall be known. There are times when we, Christians, face troubles with our reputation, and most often, we respond by blaming others, and we burst out in anger and bitterness. The last thing we realize is our weakened integrity and decayed character. John Wooden, a former coach of UCLA Bruins Basketball Team, once quoted: “Be more concerned with your character than with your reputation. Your character is what you really are while your reputation is merely what others think you are.” Henceforth, our true character is revealed through the tests we go through. Let us see what situations in life expose our character and then let us be reminded how to handle the many pits wherein we might fall if we will not be careful.

A

DVERSITY - “If thou faint in the day of adversity, thy strength is small” (Proverbs 24:10). Our times of great trial provide us valuable information about the solidity of our character. It is true that not all believers are equipped enough to handle very well the trying moments of their life. Some are so feeble that they cannot bear anything. But the Bible gives comfort found in Psalm 31:24, “Be of good courage, and he shall strengthen your heart, all ye that hope in the LORD.”

B

EAUTY – 1 John 2:16 explains the three facets of worldliness to which God’s children stumble. “For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world.” The lust of the eyes embodies every temptation

THE BLESSINGS OF DISCIPLESHIP

which a Christian sees to be beautiful yet unaware of the sin which awaits him in the line. Temptation is present everywhere, but let us not be absent in the right spirit that empowers us to resist it. One effective move we can have is to remember always the grace of God which made Joseph say, “…how then can I do this great wickedness, and sin against God?” (Gen 39:9). He might have been accused of a crime which brought him to prison but he lived up to a godly character which God manifested when He delivered him to the palace. Let us note that character is not built in men when they hide from temptation; but when they are taught to overcome and scorn it.

ROSPERITY – We find it hard to believe that blessings can cause us harm, thus prosperity can also try us and our character. A famous quotation says, “When wealth is lost, nothing is lost; When health is lost, something is lost; When character is lost, all is lost!” Let us beware where abundance, achievement and accelerations take us. They may be lead to selfishness and discontentment. This is why the wisest man ever lived stated in Proverbs 30:8-9, “Remove far from me vanity and lies: give me neither poverty nor riches; feed me with food convenient for me: Lest I be full, and deny thee, and say, Who is the LORD? or lest I be poor, and steal, and take the name of my God in vain.”

( Psalm 16:8).

Preacher Jerry Villasanta

Keeping an upright walk towards God and man is the only way we can be protected from the pitfalls of these tests of character. We are already victorious in Him who created us with a new name and a new identity which we must keep, only by His grace!

MINISTRY IN FOCUS College Young Men 1

T

HE SUNDAY SCHOOL class of College Young Men 1 is the recently-opened College men’s class last June 2014, borne out of our Pastor’s vision to boost the Sunday School Program of our church. The class, which is entrusted to the care of Bro. Gideon Cocjin III, is made up of first year and second year college students from the secular academe and Bible College. They meet at our auditorium’s 3rd floor and average about 35 in attendance every Sunday morning. Most of the students are involved in the various ministries of the church such as choir, Sunday School teaching and Campus evangelization, while many others are starting to involve in soulwinning, as seen during our 4-Sunday Gospel tracts’ distribution and saturation-drive.

Lord, Thank You For Blessing Me With Discipleship's Benefits Beata B. Agustin

“I have gone astray like a lost sheep; seek thy servant: for I do not forget thy commandments.” - Psalms 119:176

W

E OFTEN HEARD that character is better caught than taught. Even the most well instructed amongst us Christians have so much to catch and develop from Christ's character in us. These closing verses of the Psalmist's chapter 119 give us real insight into the true character and experience of a real godly man, one that will be of genuine help and encouragement to spiritually sensitive saints.

A

MAN OF CHARACTER IS HUMBLY REPENTANT. We have so much to learn about how really sinful true believers can be. It is indeed essential that we make progress in this knowledge, not so that we can find excuses to sin, not so that we can become more critical of one another’s faults, but so that we as Christians will realize that our own personal heinous depravity is not unique to us. The Psalmist opens this verse with a confession, “I have gone astray...” It is clearly a confession of spiritual waywardness similar to that mentioned in Isaiah 53:6, “All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned every one to his own way; and the Lord hath laid on him the iniquity of us all.” There will be times in our lives that we must confront ourselves of our own sins and depravity; that we are also a person subject to sin just like everybody else.

A

MAN OF CHARACTER IS HUMBLY DEPENDENT. He prays with earnest fervency. Verse 33 and succeeding say, “Teach me, O Lord, the way…” We must say, I need your instruction, I cannot do without it, “yea, I shall observe it...” I am ignorant Lord, I need your help and I need your light and illumination, “Give me understanding...” Do not leave me to myself to wander off in paths of my own choosing, “Make me to go in the path…“ The Psalmist felt deeply the resistance of his remaining sin and he begged God for His aid to overcome it. Up until verse 40 in this chapter are repeated calls for help. A man without character does not ask for help in this manner. He is falsely self-sufficient needing nothing. A man of character is humbly dependent crying out that God, Who alone can meet his needs, would certainly meet his needs.

A

MAN OF CHARACTER HAS HOLY RESOLUTION. He knows what it is to say, I will do this, I will not do that, I resolve to do this, and I determine not to do that. Verse 16 of Psalms 119 says, “I will delight myself in thy statutes: I will not forget thy word.” Some people think that character is never coming to the point of resolution or determination to change a holy course of action. For us Christians, character is knowing that we can do none of these things that we determine to do unless God gives us the help and the grace. Verse 93 says, “I will never forget thy precepts: for with them thou hast quickened me.” That is a holy thing to say, though it may seem proud to some but it is holy determination. Verse 106 states, “I have sworn, and I will perform it, that I will keep thy righteous judgments.” If we rightly understand the totality of the Scriptures, we, true believers in Jesus Christ have taken such an oath. When we come to Christ we enter into a covenant with Him, and part of that covenant relationship demands that we promise allegiance to the One True and Living God in His Son Jesus Christ, and we promise that we will obey the demands of that covenant. May God help us never to separate what must always go together in our lives until we see Him face to face.

4. Ibahagi sa iba si Kristo Hesus.
