I. Investing in the work of the Lord through our finances is a prudent (careful) decision we believers could make. A. The greatest investment is in the work of the Lord. B. The greatest investors are in the work of the Lord. C. The greatest return of investment is in the work of the Lord. II. Investing in the will of the Lord through our finances is a practical (sensitive) decision we believers could make. A. Wise believers will surely invest in the harvest of the souls of men. B. Wise believers will surely influence others to invest in the harvest of the souls of men. C. Wise believers will surely include in their budget the investment of the harvest of the souls of men. III. Investing in the word of the Lord through our finances is a perceptive (discerning) decision we believers could make. A. The unbelieving world will never hear Christ’s gospel without the investment of the people of God. B. The unbelieving world will never heed to Christ’s gospel without the instructions from the Word of God. C. The unbelieving world will never hold to Christ’s gospel without the involvement from the people of God.

You say, 'If I had a little more, I should be very satisfied.' You make a mistake. If you are not content with what you have, you would not be satisfied if it were doubled.

I

T STILL AMAZES me how God sends freedom and revival to our country. Since I got back from America, I always see myself comparing the zeal and revival that we enjoy here with the little that we have to that of the laxity of the Americans in their Christianity midst their wealth and progress. There, they have big beautiful church buildings while few people come to their church. Here, we may have open-air church auditoriums, not-so-comfortable pews, yet many still strive to come and listen to God’s Word. I pray that we do not lose that love and passion for God’s work. Meanwhile, as we continue to study our lesson on being victorious through our finances, I challenge all members to be good stewards of what God has entrusted to us. Let us continually invest in the work of the Lord, acknowledging that He is the source of all good things that we possess.

ACTS 29 | AUGUST 21 | PAGE 03

“You are to be more envied than anyone I know,” said a young man to a millionaire. “Why so?” responded the millionaire. “I am not aware of any cause for which I should be envied.” “What, sir!” exclaimed the young man in surprise. “Why, you are a millionaire! Think of the thousands your income brings every month!” “Well, what of that?” replied the millionaire. “All I get out of it is my food and clothes, and I can’t eat more than one man’s allowance and wear more than one suit of clothes at a time. Even you can do as much as I can, can’t you?” “Yes, but think of the hundreds of fine houses you own, and the rentals they bring you.” “What good does that do me?” replied the rich man. “I can only live in one house at a time. As for the money I receive for rents, why, I can’t eat or wear it; I can only use it to buy other houses for other people to live in; they are the beneficiaries, not I.” Then, finally, after a little more discussion, the millionaire turned to the young man and said: “I can tell you that the less you desire in this life, the happier you will be. All my wealth can’t buy a single day more of life, cannot buy back my youth, cannot procure power to keep off the hour of death. Then what will happen? In a few short years at most I must lie down in the grave and leave it all forever. Young man, you have no cause to envy me.”

PART 3

What to Do when Financial Trials Come F

INANCIAL TRIALS are abounding on every hand in today’s society. Many people currently find themselves without employment, with disappearing home equity, and/or with a depleted savings account. For the Christian, there is an answer for times like these. Rather than try to figure out what to do on your own, implement the Bible principles below; then stand back and watch God be true to His Word. 1. Seek the Lord first. (Matthew 6:33) In this passage of Scripture, we see God’s promise to meet our needs when we put Him first. 2. Take care of God’s man. (Philippians 4:10-19; I Kings 17:8-16) The church at Philippi was faithful in caring for the needs of Paul; consequently, we see the promise in verse 19, “But my God shall supply all your need according to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus.” In I Kings 17, the widow woman was commanded to care for the needs of the man of God “first,” even though she had little to give; then, in verse 15, we see that “she, and he, and her house, did eat many days.” 3. Exercise patience. (James 1:4) In James 1:4, we see that during times of trial we will be found “wanting nothing” when we exercise patience. 4. Give. (Luke 6:38) Luke 6:38 says, “Give, and it shall be given unto you.” It is important in times of financial difficulty that we still find a way to give. Your giving may not even be in a monetary form, but the promise says, “For the same measure that ye mete withal it shall be measured to you again.” 5. Don’t be anxious. (Philippians 4:6) We are admonished to “be careful for nothing.” In Matthew 6:31, we are told to “therefore take no thought, saying, What shall we eat: or, What shall we drink or, Wherewithal shall we be clothed.” It is important that we take God at His word and refuse to worry; instead, we are to trust.

PAGE 04 | AUGUST 21 | ACTS 29

6. Pray. (Philippians 4:6) “But in everything by prayer and supplication.” Remember we have a God who is ever attentive to the cry of His children. 7. Be thankful for what you do have. (Philippians 4:6) Remember that someone somewhere has it worse than you do. As sinful creatures, we also must remember that what we have is far better than what we actually deserve. 8. Remember God already knows your need. (Matthew 6:32) Keep in mind that “your heavenly Father knoweth that ye have need of all these things.” It is often a great comfort just to know that God knows your need and has not forgotten you. 9. Remember that you are important to God. (Matthew 6:26) This verse is speaking of the birds when God reminds us “yet your heavenly Father feedeth them. Are ye not much better than they?” Remember that God cares for the flower of the field and the fowl of the air. How much more important are you than they? 10. Remember possessions are temporal. (I Timothy 6:7) “For we brought nothing into this world, and it is certain we can carry nothing out.” Though you may have lost the “things” that you had, remember how really unimportant they are in light of eternity.

Christian Martyr 1927 - 1956

S

EVERAL YEARS AGO, construction workers were laying a foundation for a building outside the city of Pompeii. They found the corpse of a woman who must have been fleeing from the eruption of Mt. Vesuvius but was caught in the rain of hot ashes. The woman’s hands clutched jewels, which were preserved in excellent condition. She had the jewels, but death had stolen it all. That’s the bottom line in life. Worldly treasure is not a wise investment because you can’t take it with you. Jim Elliot, a missionary who was martyred for his faith, understood this reality

when he wrote in his journal, “He is no fool who gives what he cannot keep to gain that which he cannot lose.” It’s not foolish to give up what you cannot keep in order to gain what you cannot lose.

E OFTEN find ourselves in a position to make decisions that involve great risk and an uncertain final outcome which can bring great benefit or great loss. The purpose for measuring the laws of probability is to help us make better decisions going forward. Let’s consider the risk involved in the life of a Christian. We are commanded to walk by faith and not by sight. Though we cannot always see

the end result of situations in our lives, if we are truly walking by faith, the element of risk is removed. For example, the world would

say that Abraham incurred great risk when he left Ur of the Chaldees because he “…went out, not knowing whither he went” (Hebrews 11:8). Because he acted in faith, however, the element of risk was removed. There is never risk involved for the

Christian who lives and walks by faith. If we were to apply this truth to the area of giving, we would understand that we have zero risk involved when we live by faith. For

example, tithing is an act of faith; therefore, we don’t need to consider the risk involved in giving the tithe.

God’s provision is already promised to those who put Him first. Life does involve some areas of risk, but not in those areas where we willingly follow the Lord by faith.

Spending

CHECKLIST If... a doubt should at any time arise in your mind concerning what you are going to spend, either on yourself or any part of your family, you have an easy way to remove it. Calmly and seriously inquire, In expending this, am I acting according to my character? Am I acting herein, not as a proprietor, but as a steward of my Lord's goods? Am I doing this in obedience to his Word? In what Scripture does he require me so to do? Can I offer up this action, this expense, as a sacrifice to God through Jesus Christ?...

You will seldom need anything more to remove any doubt which arises on this head; but by this consideration you will receive clear light as to the way wherein you should go. ACTS 29 | AUGUST 21 | PAGE 07
