Lux Aeterna As any photographer knows, light comes in different strengths and contexts. It can be dawning or fading - and then there is perpetual light, the light of heaven. Celestial light is a feature of our choral festival this season, though the more terrestrial kinds are there too. Vaughan Williams’ Lark was ascending towards the sky, but was still earthbound. The Lux aeterna of Victoria’s and Fauré’s Requiems has a different glow. We all rejoice to see the light of day, with its sense of joining us to worlds we cannot see and there is surely no more inspiring subject to sing about. Pimlico Opera Rising Stars on Tour Programme Verdi Rigoletto Adam Green Rigoletto Laura Mitchell Gilda James Edwards The Duke Karina Lucas Maddalena Toby Purser conductor Pimlico Opera’s Rising Stars perform Verdi’s dark and tuneful masterpiece of revenge and tragedy. The audience is carried along on a wave of emotion by some of Verdi’s greatest music. All proceeds are shared between the Sheriffs’ and Recorder’s Fund, helping ex-prisoners and their families make a new start with grants for training and welfare, and Pimlico’s own pioneering work with prisoners.
In Carmina Burana, Carl Orff set the verses of a roving band of medieval clerics, celebrating the coming of spring, the pleasures of the tavern and the delights of love. Framed by the famous appeal to Destiny - ‘O Fortuna’, the work’s exuberance and sensuality, simple melodies and driving rhythms have ensured its lasting popularity. The concert will begin with a sequence of choral music from the last 50 years by British and American composers.

This autumn, Lorraine McIntosh and Ricky Ross from the multi-million selling Scottish group Deacon Blue, take their new album ‘Great Lakes’ on the road with an all-star band, under the name McIntosh Ross. After more than two decades in and out of Deacon Blue, Lorraine has launched a career as an actress while Ricky has been working as a songwriter for artists including James Blunt and Jamie Cullum. However, writing, recording and performing their own music remains central and the pair wanted to make an album together of beautiful, meaningful and simple songs that they could call their own. The result is ‘Great Lakes’, which combines echoes of the duo’s Celtic homeland with the country twang of the American south. Combined with some Deacon Blue favourites, this is a real treat for music lovers. Presented by Chas Cole for CMP

Nick Heyward live in concert An evening of Christmas Presence Nick Heyward and his band Haircut 100 were one of the most innovative bands of the Eighties. Their sunshine pop fused with funk led a whole legion of fans to experience the delights of a world filled with ‘Lemon Firebrigades’, ‘Favourite Shirts’ and the delicious possibility of ‘Boy Meets Girl’. Heyward went on to a fine solo career starting with the breezy ‘North of a Miracle’ through to other solo projects such as ‘Postcards from Home’ (1986), ‘I Love you Avenue’ (1988), ‘From Monday to Sunday’ (1993) and ‘Tangled’ (1995). This is a unique chance to see this British gem of a musician in an intimate setting.

Academy of Ancient Music
Tom Paxton
Handel’s Messiah Elizabeth Watts soprano Michael Chance counter-tenor Andrew Tortise tenor Christopher Purves baritone The Academy of Ancient Music’s 2009 Handel anniversary celebrations end with a performance of his most enduring masterpiece, Messiah. Handel’s oratorios provide some of the most cosmopolitan music of the Baroque period, fusing elements of the Italian operatic tradition with the liturgical style of the composer’s homeland. This performance of Messiah’s 1750 incarnation features the celebrated countertenor Michael Chance, together with the award-winning Choir of the AAM and some of Britain’s finest oratorio soloists.
Tom Paxton’s songs are known and loved around the world: ‘The Last Thing On My Mind’, ‘Ramblin’ Boy’, and ‘Bottle Of Wine’, just a few of his truly timeless works. His generosity to both audiences and fellow musicians is renowned, and his passion for justice and the ties that bind people together is unwavering: for all this and more, Tom Paxton ranks as one of the most revered musicians of his generation. “I think we are all born singing Tom Paxton songs” Nanci Griffith “Tom’s songs are fine songs in anyone’s book” Uncut
