As any photographer knows, light comes in different strengths and contexts. It can be dawning or fading - and then there is perpetual light, the light of heaven. Celestial light is a feature of our choral festival this season, though the more terrestrial kinds are there too. Vaughan Williams’ Lark was ascending towards the sky, but was still earthbound. The Lux aeterna of Victoria’s and Fauré’s Requiems has a different glow. We all rejoice to see the light of day, with its sense of joining us to worlds we cannot see and there is surely no more inspiring subject to sing about. Peter Phillips, Artistic Director

la serenissima

Gods, emperors and Angels Pamela Thorby recorders Adrian Chandler, Sara-Deborah Struntz violins Peter Whelan bassoon

Founding member of sixties underground prog-rock band ‘Van der Graaf Generator’ Peter Hammill performs solo for one night only this January at Cadogan Hall. Hammill’s brilliant solo material delivers songs with a more personal perspective that are lyrically richer and more serious.

Programme Vivaldi concertos for recorder, violin & bassoon

Thin Air is Peter Hammill’s twenty-eighth solo album of original songs and follows a hugely successful Van der Graaf Generator reunion in 2004.

Wind instruments had long been associated with the charms of Venus and included here are some of Vivaldi’s most challenging works for the recorder and bassoon. Venus is epitomised in the exquisite Concerto L’amoroso for violin, which also survives as part of a manuscript collection of concertos dedicated to the Holy Roman Emperor Charles VI and whose title La Cetra (The Lyre), likens him to the sun-god Apollo.

With more than four decades of performing expertise, Peter Hammill’s creativity as a producer as well as a musician often results in a stunning show; songs frequently featuring new arrangements and differing line ups of musicians.

sentir tour plus support

An evening of symphonic Music by Garayev

Presented by Como No by arrangement with Coda

In Yasmin Levy’s music there is a tension between the purity of Ladino (the JudeoSpanish music of Spain) and the fiery heart of flamenco. As she explains “There’s a very traditional way of singing Ladino. I learnt it… listening to women singing and it’s beautiful, but I missed the passion. Flamenco is nothing but passion.” In her new album Sentir (World Village), produced by the acclaimed Javier Limón (who has worked previously with the likes of Portuguese fado star Mariza), she has found a vision that integrates these musical directions. With Sentir, Yasmin’s music truly becomes ‘of the world’.

The internationally celebrated violinist enthusiastically promotes new music and unusual styles and is committed to the music of the former Soviet Union. His chamber orchestra, the Kremarata Baltica, based in his native Riga, has recorded several works by the likes of Arvo Part, Giya Kancheli and Peteris Vasks. The london community Gospel choir

If any evidence is needed of the power and beauty of the human voice then look no further. The London Community Gospel Choir is a collective of the finest voices in the country. The choir has performed at Live 8, Glastonbury, on the soundtrack for the Disney smash hit, The Lion King, live on the pitch at Wembley for the FA Cup Final and that’s only in the UK!

The second concert in the Brodsky Quartet’s series celebrating the great Romantic piano quintets opens with a short gem for quartet by a composer who bridged the gap from the Classical era, Franz Schubert. The coupling of Gershwin’s Lullaby and Dvorˇák’s American Quartet represents the first sharing of ideas between Europe and the New World as both crossed the water to learn and be inspired. The great F minor Piano Quintet of Brahms brings us firmly back to the world of Germanic Romanticism though the work contains delicacy as well as strength, surely owing to the young Brahms’ admiration of Robert Schumann and his tender if unrequited love for the older man’s wife, pianist Clara Wieck.

hideko udagawa Recital

Lightning Seeds front man, Ian Broudie, has taken something of a back seat over recent years, producing chart topping bands such as The Coral, The Zutons and The Subways.

Hideko Udagawa violin Oliver Schnyder piano

Programme includes Schumann Sonata in A minor Op.105 Richard Strauss Sonata in E flat major Op.18 Beethoven Sonata in C minor Op.30, No.2

As if he’s never been away, Ian Broudie returned in 2009 with a new Lightning Seeds album, the first for ten years, featuring ten new songs written and produced by Broudie.

A protégé of Nathan Milstein, Hideko Udagawa is highly acclaimed worldwide for her artistry and gives this recital with the Swiss pianist Oliver Schnyder.

Wrapped in melody and full of the kind of timeless emotional depth we’ve come to expect from him, ‘Four Winds’ is both uplifting and thought provoking. It’s a beautiful album that strikes a warm fuzzy familiar chord while managing to reach a new musical maturity.

The Daily Telegraph wrote ‘distinctive refinement of tone and sensibility... intuitively apt, astutely fashioned, yet never consciously insistent, with poise, grace and spirited clarity...’

Tickets: £24.50 “It’s not like I’ve ever been away, really,” Ian says. “I’ve been a part of music all my life and that never stops. These are just songs that represent where I am on this journey. I feel like whatever it is that I am supposed to be doing, I haven’t done yet. I feel like I am just getting started.”

This is one of the most enduringly popular, colourful, passionate, exciting, dramatic and widely performed works in the whole choral-orchestral repertoire. Verdi wrote it in memory of the poet Manzoni (d.1873), including in it an elaborate setting of the Libera me, his own contribution to an earlier collaborative but unperformed Requiem for Rossini (d.1868). Soloists and chorus are underpinned by a large orchestra, capable of considerable ferocity when unleashed.

40 year Anniversary concert

Having celebrated its 10th anniversary in 2009, the Kymi Sinfonietta has already established itself in Finland and beyond as a very significant musical force. The Two Moors Festival was set up in 2001 to bring cheer to people living on Dartmoor and Exmoor following the devastation caused by Foot and Mouth disease. Since then, it has developed into an annual October festival of international standing with a BBC Award, a broadcast on BBC Radio 3, and a rapidly growing audience who combine concerts with a holiday on the Moors. The Festival is celebrating ten years existence with a garden at the Chelsea Flower Show which coincides with this birthday fundraising concert.

A concert by the Ukulele Orchestra is a funny, virtuosic, twanging, awesome, foot-stomping obituary of rock-n-roll and melodious light entertainment. Their music has been used in films, plays and commercials and their live concerts have sold out all over the world, including recently the BBC Proms at the Royal Albert Hall.
