Zurich International Concert Series Fine orchestras that excel in the music of their own countries - for me, that’s the great selling point of this Zurich International Concert Series - there’s still something really special about hearing an orchestra let loose on its own native repertoire. The Moscow Philharmonic Orchestra made that clear with some electrifying Khachaturian in the season’s opening concert back in October, and there’s more of the same when Valery Poliansky brings the Russian State Philharmonic Orchestra to Cadogan Hall in February. Shostakovich wrote his second piano concerto for his son Maxim to play - this time it’ll be the conductor’s daughter Tatiana Polianskaya who appears as soloist. Then the focus switches to the great Austro-German tradition for a week in March 2009, with a guest residency from

the Konzerthausorchester Berlin. Three great composers, Haydn, Mendelssohn and Beethoven, appear in all three concerts of their ‘Berlin Project’; Lothar Zagrosek conducts. The Orchestre National d’Île de France brings two classic French scores to Cadogan Hall in April - the Mother Goose suite by Maurice Ravel and Debussy’s la Mer. While Smetana’s The Moldau and Dvorak’s Seventh Symphony get the authentic Czech treatment from the Prague Symphony Orchestra. It’s the Spanish National Orchestra that closes out the Zurich International Concert Series. Alongside such homegrown highlights as the gorgeous Concierto de Aranjuez by Rodrigo and the Fantastic Dances by Joaquin Turina, there’s also music by a French interloper, Maurice Ravel. This comment might not
exactly grant me the freedom of Madrid, but for my money it’s actually Ravel who wrote the best Spanish orchestral music of all. As I said, it’s the chance to hear musicians let loose on the music of their own country that’s the real attraction here. What does a brilliant Russian brass section sound like live; how do Bohemian string players bring the flowing sounds of the Vltava to life; what do castanets sound like in the hands of a real Spaniard? Come to Cadogan Hall and find out.

This concert displays the gamut of emotions of which Tchaikovsky was capable, be it the deep eloquence of the Andante Cantabile – one of those indelible ‘100 best tunes’ that moves the soul – the elegance and panache of the Cossack-dancing Violin Concerto, or the fatedriven Symphony No.4, which opens with a tremendous summons from the brass, heralding a roller-coaster journey of struggle and triumph. The UK Ismaili Ensemble projects were established in 2007 to commemorate the Golden Jubilee of His Highness the Aga Khan and embody a long term commitment to the arts by the Ismaili Muslim Community. Through a blend of musical styles and instruments where sitar meets guitar and drums dance with trumpets, Reflection draws inspiration from East and West, the traditional and the contemporary. Taking centre stage is ‘Armaghan’, meaning ‘gift’ in Persian. Composed by the distinguished Irish composer Ian Wilson in collaboration with the Ismaili Ensemble, Armaghan is a musical tribute in celebration of His Highness the Aga Khan’s Golden Jubilee visit to the UK. The compositions which follow are especially created by the Ensembles working alongside musicians from the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and artistic director Paul Griffiths.

Showcasing Shostakovich at his thrilling, witty best, Bernstein’s comic magic, and the lyrical delights of Anderson, the programme is a fantastically fun journey through the lighter side of music. At its heart are two sizzling works by the master of Broadway and the silver screen, George Gershwin, who is synonymous with everything that is great about light music.

I Fagiolini
Satire to Sackcloth
Carnival in 16th century Italy was a flamboyant affair, nowhere more so than in Venice where tourists arrived for the street spectacles with masked commedia dell’arte shows, bull chases through the streets and excessive living. Its spirit lives on in masques and comedies which I Fagiolini semi-stage with characteristic elan. As a nicely severe contrast, the season of Lent which followed produced vocal music of a profundity and intensity which has never been equalled. Step into a different world with two of the masterworks of the whole period by Gesualdo and Tallis.

Rossini Semiramide Overture Sibelius Violin Concerto Dvorˇák Symphony No.9 From the ‘New World’ Thomas Dausgaard conductor Henning Kraggerud violin In September 1892 Dvorˇák arrived in New York as director of the National Conservatoire of Music. He was both homesick for Prague and excited about the American adventure, an impassioned recipe to create the American-style melodies, heartfelt expression and Slavonic fieriness that is the ‘New World’ Symphony. At its heart is the famous Largo – music of pathos and universally significant, having received Spiritual treatment and accompanied a television advert for bread! Here Dvorˇák’s ever-popular symphony is balanced by the darkly beautiful and exhilarating Violin Concerto of Sibelius and the theatrically pregnant, grand-scale overture to one of Rossini’s thirty-nine operas.

The legacy of Bach is reflected by Mozart and Mendelssohn in two very contrasting fugues – one turbulent, the other serene. Beethoven’s final work of his immense quartet output is uncharacteristically short and whimsical, with a hidden joke at the expense of his publishers, nevertheless containing one of his trademark heartwrenching slow movements. Shostakovich’s own arrangements - of his tragic aria from Lady Macbeth of Mtensk and the witty gem Polka - encapsulate the full range of emotions in his troubled life and another Russian classic, Borodin’s second quartet with its famous and beautiful Notturno, is pure escapism.
Mozart Overture Apollo and Hyacinthus KV 38 Mozart Concert Aria: Voi avete un cor fidele KV 217 J C Bach Symphony in G minor Op. 6 No. 6 Mozart Concert Aria: A questo sono... Or che il cielo KV 374 Mozart Overture La Finta Giardiniera KV 196 Haydn Symphony No 33, ‘Mercury’ Mozart Concert Aria: A Berenice... Sol nascente KV 70 TKC’s previous excursions into the classical repertoire have met with great acclaim. High drama is assured when TKC’s orchestra is joined by celebrated Canadian soprano, Gillian Keith, for this season’s grand finale, exploring the electrifying brilliance of the music of Mozart and his contemporaries.

This programme is a celebration of all that is best in High Renaissance English sacred music. Mixing some of the most substantial works ever written in these islands with one or two of the smallest, the evening will give an overview of the astonishing achievement of Tallis and Byrd, alongside two of their greatest colleagues at the Tudor Chapel Royal. Sheppard’s Media vita is probably the most talked-about single item the Tallis Scholars have ever recorded. “……the Tallis Scholars under conductor Peter Phillips sang these slow-moving, luminous masses with impeccable blend and balance. Did anybody care that the last tube had just gone half way through the “Benedictus”? This is music where time stands still.” Richard Fairman, The Financial Times

The Lost Proms Ronald Corp conductor Julian Lloyd Webber cello New London Orchestra
The exciting Lithuanian-born violin virtuoso Julian Rachlin returns to London to perform with the strings of the Academy of St Martin in the Fields in a programme which includes Piazzola’s Four Seasons of Buenos Aires – a heady mixture of energetic violin writing and tango nuevo, evocative of the city which ultimately became Piazzola’s home.
Programme
The Lost Proms is known for championing little known music, and this concert with Julian Lloyd Webber and the New London Orchestra is no exception. The programme will include Holst’s Invocation for cello and orchestra (1911), one of his most overtly romantic pieces. Originally called ‘A Song of the Evening’, it conjures up a melancholy nocturnal atmosphere. After its initial performances the work was lost among Holst’s papers. All proceeds go to Mencap, the Uk’s leading learning disability charity. More special guest soloists to be announced. Artists subject to change.

Beethoven Egmont Overture Beethoven Piano Concerto No.5, ‘Emperor’ Beethoven Symphony No.7
Tickets: £35, £25, £15, £10
This is Beethoven at his most stirring and inspirational. The Egmont Overture releases the tensions and struggle of conflict into a rampaging and ultimate victory. The ‘Emperor’ Piano Concerto, its nickname coined by a London critic overwhelmed by the work’s capacity for grand gestures and deep repose, features the charismatic piano star, Freddy Kempf. And, if this were not enough, there are also the profound melodies and propulsive rhythms of Symphony No.7, termed by Wagner as ‘the apotheosis of the dance’ – music of unending energy to electrify the spirits. Meet the artists: free pre-concert talk from 6.30pm presented by Edward Seckerson.
