Autumn 2008
Musical Movements Cadogan Hall’s commitment to staging the best live performance continues this season with a full programme of orchestral concerts, opera, early music, jazz, big bands, world music and contemporary music artists. “The unwavering assurance of variety and the highest quality of music, musicians and musicianship makes Cadogan Hall such a reliable and attractive concert destination for me.” Nicholas Bicket, Encore member ‘A remarkably impressive venue that is acoustically excellent’ BBC Music Magazine “My favourite concert hall in London; intimate, comfortable and great acoustics.” Nabil Tarazi, Encore member
Cadogan Hall has quickly become one of London’s premier venues for live music covering a multitude of genres.
“I am delighted to support Cadogan Hall. From the time I ‘chanced’ upon its existence I have been a devoted supporter since then, and have introduced most of my friends to it. I love it, love it!!” Mrs Miki Lund, Encore member ‘Cadogan Hall… has an airy stateliness that provided the five-piece with a backdrop that seemed to render their music in architectural form: calm and measured, but also warm and with some wonderful flourishes.’ The Independent “I had such a great time performing in the Sondheim concerts last year, that I jumped at the opportunity to come back to Cadogan Hall again this year. It's such a warm venue. It reminds me very much of Welsh chapels where there's not a bad seat in the house. Everyone gets a good eyeful and earful - and somehow it's possible to be quite intimate with the audience.” Daniel Evans, performer

Stardust , Concerto For Clarinet, Frenesi, Begin The Beguine, Moonglow, Dancing in the Dark In the 1930s and ‘40s, Jazz clarinettist Artie Shaw led one of the greatest big bands in America. His astonishing technique and fluency earned him the title ‘King of the Clarinet’ and the admiration of both jazz and classical musicians. Shaw’s decision to add a string section to his big band caused much controversy in its day, but his Concerto for Clarinet has been showcased by many top classical soloists and his performances of Stardust, Dancing in the Dark and Moonglow have been accepted as classics of the idiom.

Classical Persian and western opera masterpieces accompanied by dancing by Master of Dance, Frederico and partners. An entertaining gala evening with divergent styles of music and dance. Four internationally renowned opera singers display their incomparable talents and capture the hearts of their audience performing multilingual arias accompanied by a selection of dance pieces performed by the master of dance and his partners.
Falstaff is Shakespeare’s most memorable comic creation. Ever since Falstaff first stepped on to the English stage he has been one of the best-loved reprobates in the English theatre. Despite his immense size he has, of course, retained his powers over women and he sends identical love letters to two of the Merry Wives of Windsor. They are neither flattered nor amused and lead him a merry dance, culminating in his humiliation – not once but twice. There is never a dull moment in this punchy production of Verdi’s only comic opera.

Bandleader and clarinetist Pete Long (Ronnie Scott’s Big Band, Echoes of Ellington, Gillespiana) presents a superlative recreation of one of the iconic moments in jazz history. In January 1938, Benny Goodman, ‘The King of Swing’, brought his magnificent band (which included Gene Krupa, Harry James and Lionel Hampton) to America’s most prestigious classical music venue.
A programme of three ever-popular pieces, beginning with Mussorgsky’s chilling depiction of a pagan ceremony. On arriving in New York to teach, a homesick Dvorˇák was inspired to compose his invigorating and soulful New World Symphony, its slow movement now world-famous in many guises. In between these celebrated works is Max Bruch’s evergreen Violin Concerto No.1 which remains one of the most-loved of violin works imbued as it is with heart, vitality, deep expression and a fund of glorious romantic melody. Both tonight’s piano concerto and symphony are masterpieces in their respective genres; Beethoven’s poetic, searching and light-hearted concerto providing the perfect contrast to Dvorˇák’s impassioned, and arguably greatest symphony, brimful with lyricism and emotion, and imbued with Bohemian traits of song and dance. Cadogan Hall PRESENTS Celebrity Recital Series 2008-09
The Brodsky Quartet
Emma Johnson, John Lill and Julian Lloyd Webber The Brodsky Quar tet and John Telfer (aka Alan the Right-On Vicar from ‘The Archers’) present a potted history of the string quar tet from Haydn (who makes a guest appearance) to Hendrix (who doesn’t). The climax of the concert is a ‘Peter and the Wolf ’ for the 21st century – ‘Anna and the Moods’ for narrator and string quartet. Written by Icelandic storyteller Sjon with music by Wallace and Gromit composer, Julian Nott, it’s a wild and wacky coming-of-age story, which has recently been made into a film, for angst-ridden teenagers and their disillusioned parents. A fun-filled, vaguely educational hour for all the family.

One has only to imagine 'Walking in the Air' and its haunting melody immediately enters the mind; it is undoubtedly the most memorable part of 'The Snowman' and just a small part of Howard Blake's immense output, at the heart of which is melody and colour, including The Passion of Mary, a work described as a 'dramatic oratorio'. Blake's memorable Piano Concerto was written in 1991 to celebrate the thirtieth birthday of Diana, Princess of Wales.

Two giants of the quartet repertoire and two little gems by Stravinsky – the ‘Three Pieces for String Quartet’ and the ‘Concertino’ – make up this Russian-inspired programme. Beethoven wrote three quartets in his middle period dedicated to Count Razumovsky, an important patron in Vienna, who requested that Russian themes be incorporated in the works. In grudging deference to his commissioner Beethoven complied in only two of the works and then with a wicked irony - this first of the set contains a disrespectfully cheerful version of a sad Russian folk-tune as its Finale. The first of Tchaikovsky’s three string quartets is perhaps the most well-known, containing the famous ‘Andante Cantabile’ as its slow movement and an elegiac eloquence unusual for the mainly orchestral composer.

Brahms’ music revels in pitting the soloist against the orchestra, only to later have the two forces entwine in mellifluous depths, before ending with the rhythmic swing of the ‘Hungarian’ finale. Pierrot Lunaire is a ground-breaking masterwork of the 20th century which appeared in 1912, after Schoenberg had worked as musical director of Überbrettl – one of Berlin’s leading Kabarett houses. He created this extraordinarily virtuosic piece of high expressionism for actress-singer Albertine Zehme and subtitled it ‘A melodrama’.

Outstanding British singers Elin Manahan Thomas and Andrew Kennedy join Richard Hickox and the acclaimed City of London Sinfonia in the first London performance of John Tavener’s recently completed Requiem. ‘Timeless yet urgent, disarmingly simple in places, thunderously apocalyptic elsewhere, it is inexorably focused on the inevitable hour when - to quote Tavener’s subtitle, borrowed from a Hindu sage - ‘our glory lies where we cease to exist’. Handel Ode for St Cecilia’s Day Purcell Four scenes from ‘The Fairy Queen’ ‘The Fairy Queen’ is an adaptation of Shakespeare’s ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’. The ‘entertainment’ consisted partly of spoken drama and partly of music. Purcell wrote four scenes for insertion between the five Acts of the play, and the same structure is retained in The English Concert’s version of ‘The Fairy Queen’. Scene 1 sees the four characters of Night, Mystery, Secrecy and Sleep reflect on the complexity and variety of love. Scene 2 is a comic pastoral exchange between the rustics, Coridon and Mopsa. Scene 3 is the heart of the work consisting of a single air, The Plaint, in which a lover movingly mourns the loss of her beloved. The final scene, in contrast, provides a happy, matrimonial conclusion.
Many of these are commissions from composers including Sir Peter Maxwell Davies, John McCabe, Jackson Hill and Richard Rodney Bennett. Also included is the World Premiere of an adaptation of Michael Nyman’s ‘Handshake in the Dark’.

Handel Messiah (complete) Handel was largely responsible for the development of English Oratorio, and Messiah, his greatest achievement, is one of the most popular works in all music. In a state of true inspiration, he created the entire glorious composition in just three weeks in 1742, scarcely stopping to eat or sleep, and famously saying that while writing the Hallelujah chorus he saw heaven open and God sitting upon his throne.

Brahms composed the Academic Festival Overture as a thank you to the University of Breslau for awarding him an honorary doctorate. This agile and resounding potpourri of student songs (the best-known being Gaudeamus igitur) makes for a stirring beginning to this concert. The action takes place on the island of Naxos where a cast of pirates, shepherds and nymphs are embroiled in a tale of love, mistaken identity, jealousy and fidelity, the resolution to which is provided by the interceding gods. It is easy to imagine how thrilling the work’s first performance must have been in 1730s Leipzig. Bach’s contemporaries would have recognised much of the music they heard: the Oratorio is made up of music brought together from a range of Bach’s earlier compositions. Unlike modern audiences, however, they would never have heard the work performed from beginning to end. Each of its six parts was originally performed on a different day of the Christmas period. Tonight parts 1, 3, 5 & 6 will be performed.
Kazakh-born Stravinsky is Artistic Director of the Karelia Philharmonic Orchestra which is marking its 75th anniversary by a series of European tours. The History of Cadogan Hall
Tuesday 17 February, 7.30pm
London Lyric Opera Programme
Beethoven Fidelio
Completed in 1907, the First Church of Christ, Scientist, regularly seated ‘capacity’ congregations of fourteen hundred in its heyday. However, like most other churches, there was a decline in attendances and by 1996 the members were unable to maintain the building which then fell into disuse. It was Cadogan Estate that took the plunge, purchasing the building in 2000 to safeguard its future.
On one level the conversion of this large relatively modern listed building into a performance space seems straightforward. After all, there was a ready-made auditorium with a raked floor, a stage, a proscenium and a gallery. Unfortunately modern expectations of comfort and facilities let alone the requirements of building and licensing regulations meant extensive and fundamental changes had to be made.
Through their connection with Opera Holland Park, Cadogan discovered that the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra was looking for a permanent base in London. Cadogan Hall was an excellent opportunity for the orchestra to benefit from Cadogan’s aim to bring the former church back into useful life in a manner befitting its character and civic presence.
The acoustics of the building were a big issue both in terms of environmental acoustics – the control of sound breakout from the building – and performance acoustics within the auditorium. The new performance lighting and sound systems in the auditorium include the computer controlled theatrical lights on the ceiling. These really come into their own when they are programmed to rotate, change light beam colours and patterns and provide other special effects for performances. A large screen for films and visual presentations can be lowered and allows performances elsewhere to be relayed live by satellite or the Internet.

designs for Cadogan Hall were said to exhibit ‘artistic simplicity of patterning and to provide efficiency of lighting and economy consistent with dignity’. All the windows were removed and taken by a specialist to workshops for painstaking restoration. Although the Celtic knot motifs are simple and the use of colour restrained, the dramatic effect of the restored glass was another pleasant surprise during the refurbishment process. Despite the scale of the auditorium the combined effects of the stage, the steeply raked stalls and the low gallery create a surprisingly intimate venue where the audience experiences a very real feeling of being part of the performance. A history of the church written in 1931 (to which we are much indebted) expressed the aspiration that the building would be ‘able to respond to the call of progress’. I hope you will agree that Cadogan Estate’s vision and investment in the fabric and infrastructure has fulfilled this wish and should ensure that Cadogan Hall will continue to play a major part in the civic and cultural life of Chelsea and London for the next 100 years.
