The Ukulele Orchestra of Great Britain, seen and heard across the globe, is simultaneously provocative, entertaining and inspiring. Their shows combine music, humour and intelligence with silliness. Using a menagerie of voices and cheap instruments, The Ukulele Orchestra of Great Britain elicits emotion and thought in unexpected forms and successfully mixes highbrow with lowbrow to appeal to an astonishingly broad audience: think Morecambe and Wise, explaining Joseph Beuys’ Desert Island Discs. Wherever The Ukulele Orchestra performs, from Never Mind The Buzzcock’s Christmas Special, Jools Holland’s Hootenanny, to Blue Peter, to the smallest pub in England, they bring a hilarious style of music virtuoso that is all of their own.

The Brodsky Quartet Programme
Mozart Adagio and Fugue in C minor, KV. 546 Mendelssohn Fugue Beethoven String Quartet No. 16 in F major, Op. 135 Shostakovich Two pieces for String Quartet Borodin String Quartet No. 2 in D major Cadogan Hall’s Resident String Quartet presents a beautiful programme of small gems by some of the genre’s most prolific composers. The legacy of Bach is reflected by Mozart and Mendelssohn in two very contrasting fugues – one turbulent, the other serene. Beethoven’s final work of his immense quartet output is uncharacteristically short and whimsical, with a hidden joke at the expense of his publishers, nevertheless containing one of his trademark heartwrenching slow movements. Shostakovich’s own arrangements – of his tragic aria from Lady Macbeth of Mtensk and the witty gem Polka – encapsulate the full range of emotions in his troubled life and another Russian classic, Borodin’s second quartet with its famous and beautiful Notturno, is pure escapism.

Smetana The Moldau (From ‘Ma Vlast’) Chopin Piano Concerto No.1 Dvorˇák Symphony No.7 The Prague Symphony Orchestra, conducted by their former principal conductor, Petr Altrichter, will be performing works by two of Czechoslovakia’s most-loved composers. Smetana believed that in music was the life of Czechs and he used many Czech dance rhythms and folk melodies. Dvorˇák’s 7th symphony also reflects his patriotic feelings towards the Czech nation. The orchestra will be joined by acclaimed Russian pianist and Chopin specialist, Nikolai Demidenko, for the sublime Piano Concerto No.1.
This programme is a celebration of all that is best in High Renaissance English sacred music. Mixing some of the most substantial works ever written in these islands with one or two of the smallest, the evening will give an overview of the astonishing achievement of Tallis and Byrd, alongside two of their greatest colleagues at the Tudor Chapel Royal. Sheppard’s Media vita is probably the most talked-about single item the Tallis Scholars have ever recorded. “……the Tallis Scholars under conductor Peter Phillips sang these slow-moving, luminous masses with impeccable blend and balance. Did anybody care that the last tube had just gone half way through the “Benedictus”? This is music where time stands still.” Richard Fairman, The Financial Times

The Egmont Overture releases the tensions and struggle of conflict into a rampaging and ultimate victory. The ‘Emperor’ Piano Concerto, its nickname coined by a London critic overwhelmed by the work’s capacity for grand gestures and deep repose, features the charismatic piano star, Freddy Kempf. And, if this were not enough, there are also the profound melodies and propulsive rhythms of Symphony No.7, termed by Wagner as ‘the apotheosis of the dance’ – music of unending energy to electrify the spirits.

Programme
Eric Whitacre’s Cloudburst is an exciting vocal ritual culminating in a rain storm cleverly evoked by numerous percussion instruments. From the master of Argentinean dance and tango, Astor Piazzolla, we have a series of four tangos, each reflecting the four seasons in Buenos Aires.
Ealing Choral Society is joined by the innovative British percussion quartet, ensemble bash and choristers from Ealing Abbey Choir. The main work is Orff ’s Carmina Burana – based on earthy 13th-century Bavarian monks’ songs, while Bob Chilcott’s catchy ‘capital cantata’ captures the cries of London’s market places. In contrast are three short examples of Bruckner’s sacred music, and the programme is completed by music learnt from percussionists at the Royal Court in Ghana.

The wit and sparkle of the Overture to Rossini’s ever-popular comic opera The Barber of Seville gets this concert off to an effervescent start. For many music-lovers Elgar’s Cello Concerto has become hugely significant, a one-to-one identification with the composer’s beautiful, intense and stoic music, and a highly personal response to the life-shattering events of the First World War. Julian Lloyd Webber is particularly associated with this eloquent work. Mendelssohn’s time in Scotland with its mists, tempests, landscape and history inspired from him a vivid symphonic portrait that broods and dances simultaneously.

Sir Willard White explores more of the repertoire and life story of this important icon of the last century. Paul Robeson epitomised the energy and integrity of the major figures who raised awareness of equality and human rights in the mid-twentieth century. The story of his example is moving and highly relevant to today’s world. Sir Willard’s second exploration of the great man is backed by musical director and pianist Neal Thornton who leads a group of outstanding accompanying musicians, including Guy Barker on trumpet and the Pavão String Quartet, to bring orchestral textures to tailor-made arrangements of more popular songs from the Paul Robeson songbook. The programme includes Negro spirituals, British folk song, and classic early jazz songs. The concert concludes with his rendition of Ol’ Man River. Willard White takes on the mantle of the legendary Paul Robeson with the quality of a master craftsman. “It takes a larger-than-life figure to begin to pay homage to Paul Robeson… Willard White has charisma and vocal power to spare...” The Times Tickets: £32*, £27*, £20*, £10 *£2 discount for Festival Friends

The Brodsky Quartet Programme Wolf Italian Serenade Puccini Crisantemi Verdi String Quartet in E minor Tchaikovsky Souvenir de Florence, String Sextet in D major, Op. 70 Wolf’s Italian Serenade for string quartet was written at a time when Wolf was setting the poems of Eichendorff and explores similar themes. It’s a delightful miniature, offsetting the romantic importuning of the lover against the mocking and witty response of the beloved. Puccini’s Crisantemi, a poignant and elegiac piece for String Quartet, is in one continuous movement and was composed in a single night. Another great opera composer, Verdi, follows with the only surviving chamber music of his catalogue; the String quartet in e minor. Verdi said of this work ‘I don’t know if the string quartet is beautiful or ugly but I do know it’s a quartet’ For the final piece in the programme, the Brodsky quartet are joined by John Metcalfe (viola) and Sophie Harris (cello) for Tchaikovsky’s string sextet Souvenir de Florence with its melodic, innocently romantic movements contrasted with Tchaikovsky’s distinctive Russian style folk melodies and rhythms.

The Cardinall’s Musick Andrew Carwood director Andrew Carwood and his vocal ensemble launch the Proms Chamber Music series by marking the 500th anniversary of the coronation of Henry VIII. Richly sonorous and grand in design, the music of the time combines massive choral writing with complex solo textures. Today’s mix of sacred and secular features songs by King Henry himself, and settings of texts in his honour by leading composers of the day.
Susan Graham mezzo-soprano Malcolm Martineau piano The seductive world of French song is a speciality of the superlative American mezzo Susan Graham and her duo partner Malcolm Martineau, who likens the delights on offer to a ménu gourmand. The wide variety of musical dishes here scans a century of mélodies françaises taking in the themes of night and nature, love and childhood, and culminates in Poulenc’s La dame de Monte Carlo, his bittersweet melodrama.
One of the UK’s leading string quartets – and former New Generation Artists – pair two strikingly original works in homage to two anniversary composers. Haydn’s quartet comes from a period in the 1780s when he declared he was writing ‘in a new and special way’ and the second-movement set of variations is characteristically unexpected and quirky in its shifting contrasts of mood. Britten’s atmospheric and evocative second quartet was composed in 1945 to celebrate the 250th anniversary of the death of Henry Purcell, and the finale is a ‘Chacony’ – an extended set of variations – which offers an extraordinary glimpse of Purcell’s sound-world refracted through the imagination of a composer who loved his music.

Brahms Variations and Fugue on a Theme by Handel
Concerto in D major
Llyˆr Williams piano
Scottish Ensemble Jonathan Morton violin/director
A recital of ‘Baroque Reflections’ devised by this remarkably accomplished former Radio 3 New Generation Artist and inspired by Brahms’s magnificent homage to the music of anniversary composer Handel. Busoni and Mendelssohn reinvented Bach for their own times: Busoni by transcribing for the piano a selection of organ pieces, and Mendelssohn by breathing vivid new life into an archaic form in a turbulent Prelude and Fugue. Brahms worked on an even broader canvas with the music of Handel, transforming a theme from one of his keyboard suites and building to a glorious climax. Handel, that supreme man of the theatre, would have loved it!
A concert of great string music spanning three centuries. At its heart is a new piece by John Woolrich, framed by classic works by Purcell and Mozart and Stravinsky’s mercurial Concerto of 1946, which casts an ironic eye back to the musical past as it extracts every ounce of colour and contrast from the strings. With its disjointed motor rhythms, the music twists and turns in the air like some crazy dance, alternately gawky and elegant, high-spirited and nostalgic – the perfect vehicle to demonstrate the versatility and vitality of this exciting ensemble of players.

Joshua Bell violin Steven Isserlis cello Dénes Várjon piano Two distinguished concerto soloists join forces with a brilliant young Hungarian pianist for music of poetry and drama. Schumann’s four delightful character pieces were his first works for piano trio, composed in 1842 when he was experiencing what his wife Clara called ‘the joy of discovering a passion for trios’. Schumann himself dubbed Mendelssohn’s Opus 49 ‘the master trio of our age’; it carries this anniversary composer’s hallmarks of an expressive ‘song without words’ and a fleeting ‘scherzo’, encircled by the Romantic sweep and grandeur of its outer movements.

This year the Proms marks the 10th anniversary of BBC Radio 3’s New Generation Artists scheme with a three-day, 12-concert weekend at Cadogan Hall, featuring a small army of NGAs past and present – in addition to a sprinkling of NGA appearances in the evening Proms and the Monday-lunchtime Proms Chamber Music series. Some of the most established NGAs are appearing – pianist Simon Trp∂eski, flautist Sharon Bezaly, mezzo-soprano Christine Rice and baritone Jonathan Lemalu, among others – while exciting newcomers, jazz trumpeter Tom Arthurs, harpsichordist Mahan Esfahani, violinist Tai Murray, mezzo-soprano Daniela Lehner, cellist Andreas Brantelid and Finnish string quartet Meta4, make their Proms debuts. Pianists Ashley Wass and Simon CrawfordPhillips complement this season’s focus on Stravinsky ballets with The Rite of Spring in the composer’s duet version, while celebrations of the season’s four major composer anniversaries include Mendelssohn’s remarkable early Octet played by the Jerusalem and Pavel Haas quartets. Cellist Natalie Clein, violinist Jennifer Pike, tenor Andrew Kennedy and Jonathan Lemalu are among those performing works by Delius, Holst and Elgar in a concert marking 75 years since 1934, a landmark year in British music; and there are two specially commissioned new works: by jazz NGA Tom Arthurs and by John McCabe for pianist Ashley Wass. With forces ranging from solo violin (Alina Ibragimova and Tai Murray in Bach and Bartók respectively) to eight cellos (in VillaLobos’s arrangements of Bach Preludes and Fugues) and to four string quartets (in Johannes Bernardus van Bree’s Allegro), the variety of artist groupings is as wide as the musical talent on offer.

Purcell Evening Hymn Iestyn Davies counter-tenor Simon Wall tenor Members of the Academy of Ancient Music Richard Egarr harpsichord/director The centrepiece of this recital – honouring the 350th anniversary of Purcell’s birth – is an affecting tribute to Purcell by his teacher and predecessor as organist of Westminster Abbey, John Blow. A sequence of Purcell’s solo songs and keyboard pieces, a pair of his inventive trio sonatas, and the deeply moving Evening Hymn complete this mix of mellifluous music. Titi Robin’s music highlights the musical roots of his personal circumstances and inspiration. The journey visits France, North Africa, the Middle East and North India but most pertinently reflects the gypsy heritage that Titi has become somewhat an ambassador of in his home country of France. As a leading gypsy music exponent for the best part of thirty years and perhaps best known for the seminal album Gitans , it was no surprise that he was nominated for a BBC World Music Award in 2008 and performed at WOMAD Australia and New Zealand earlier this year. Titi Robin has composed and collaborated with a plethora of International stars both in the studio and on stage including Gulabi Sapera (India), Cameron De la Isla (Andalucia), Esma Redzepoza (Macedonia), The Gipsy Kings (Spain) and written soundtracks Ole (2005) & The Code (2002). ‘One of those wizard finger pickers that can master any instrument that looks even vaguely like a guitar’ Charlie Gillet BBC Radio 3 ‘Rich beyond words’ World Music Central

As any photographer knows, light comes in different strengths and contexts. It can be dawning or fading - and then there is perpetual light, the light of heaven. Celestial light is a feature of our choral festival this season, though the more terrestrial kinds are there too. Vaughan Williams’ Lark was ascending towards the sky, but was still earthbound. The Lux aeterna of Victoria’s and Fauré’s Requiems has a different glow. We all rejoice to see the light of day, with its sense of joining us to worlds we cannot see and there is surely no more inspiring subject to sing about. Peter Phillips, Artistic Director

Programme
“I think people are fed up with sound bites, spin, sensation and scandal from politicians. What people really want is a chance to discuss issues that affect all our lives, the things that really matter, and that we have a discussion in a sensible uninterrupted and civilised manner” says Benn adding “A theatre is an excellent venue for this kind of intimate evening and it is where political debate is really happening today. I get quite excited by this opportunity of bringing politics back to the people, which is probably not a good thing for a man of my age!” he laughs.
