Almost every piece in this programme is scored for double choir, reflecting the new way of writing sacred music towards the end of the 16th century. Dominque Phinot, was one of the first to experiment with double choir as these Lamentations so movingly show. Palestrina’s Missa Papae Marcelli is something apart: and one of the greatest masterpieces of the period.

Verdi Requiem This is one of the most enduringly popular, colourful, passionate, exciting, dramatic and widely performed works in the whole choral-orchestral repertoire. Verdi wrote it in memory of the poet Manzoni (d.1873), including in it an elaborate setting of the Libera me, his own contribution to an earlier collaborative but unperformed Requiem for Rossini (d.1868). Soloists and chorus are underpinned by a large orchestra, capable of considerable ferocity when unleashed.

Upbeat Management presents
The Pasadena Roof Orchestra
‘Johann I’m Only Dancing’ Piers Adams recorders Julia Bishop violin Angela East cello Howard Beach harpsichord
40 Year Anniversary Concert For forty years the Pasadena Roof Orchestra, based in the UK, has delighted audiences all over the world with its mix of swing and hot dance music.
A dynamic presentation of music by the greatest genius of the baroque era, Johann Sebastian Bach, performed with Red Priest’s legendary blend of creativity, wit and virtuosity.
Today, not only is the orchestra bringing its music to young audiences all over the world, but is introducing new generations of young musicians to the music. The reputation of the orchestra is as legendary in its own right, as the bands from the 1920’s and 1930’s that inspired it.
The programme includes epic transcriptions of Brandenburg Concerto No.3 and the great Toccata and Fugue in D minor, alongside a host of dazzling allegros, whirling dances and some of the most sublime adagios ever composed. Red Priest’s arrangements are inspired by Bach’s own improvisatory zeal, and they play entirely from memory with astonishing energy, creating a virtual orchestra from their four instruments.

Tchaikovsky’s Romanticism and intense passion are displayed in this dynamic programme. The Capriccio Italien, a piece inspired by a trip the composer took to Rome, is an invigorating opener, with the enchanting Variations on a Rococo Theme offering a more elegant contrast. It is, however, the emotionally charged Symphony No.4 that gives the listener an insight through a journey of struggle and eventual triumph.

The series’ final work by the same composer, the A major Piano Quintet, returns to his more usual middle-European, folk-influenced style and is an absolute delight for players and listeners alike. The central work on the programme completes the homage to Robert Schumann in the 200th anniversary of his birth: his third and final String Quartet, the A major, is an outpouring of emotions by this troubled soul.

Handel Israel in Egypt
Friday 25 June, 7.30pm
Goldsmiths Choral Union Hertfordshire Classical Orchestra
Israel in Egypt is a blockbuster of a work, a grand choral spectacular, regarded as second only to Messiah in demonstrating Handel’s storytelling genius. Virtuosic choruses tell the tale of Moses and the Children of Israel on their Exodus out of Egypt, interspersed with delightful arias, amongst them the wittily-scored “Their land brought forth frogs”. With plagues, pestilence, the parting of the Red Sea, and a dramatic finale, London’s largest choir invites you on an epic journey through biblical lands.

Piano Quintet in E flat major, Op. 44 Francesco Piemontesi piano Meta4
This year's Schumann bicentenary celebrations at the Proms begin with the composer at his most intimate and poignant. The 16 Heine settings of Dichterliebe (‘A Poet’s Love’) trace a poet’s increasing dejection as he reflects upon his imagined love. One of Britain’s foremost tenors features as its protagonist – partnered by leading pianist Imogen Cooper, who joins Padmore in a sequence of Schubert songs, and performs a lively Schubert miniature.
The young Finnish string quartet Meta4 and Francesco Piemontesi – both Radio 3 New Generation Artists – join forces in Schumann’s Piano Quintet, beloved by performers and listeners alike for its melodic sweep and passionate momentum. The recital begins with a selection of Debussy’s evocative piano miniatures and the quartet introduces a specially commissioned work by its compatriot Jouni Kaipainen, one of the astonishing generation of composers nurtured in Finland over the last half-century.

Berg Seven Early Songs
Wolf Italienisches Liederbuch – selection Malin Christensson soprano Henk Neven baritone Hans Eijsackers piano Following the Schumann and Schubert songs of the first Proms Chamber Music recital, today’s performers extend the Lieder repertoire towards three of its finest later exponents and celebrate the 150th anniversary of the birth of Hugo Wolf. Brahms and Wolf broadened the art-song’s range respectively towards dark-hued introspection and characterful vignettes, whereas Berg’s expansive melodies touch on a heady post-Romantic atmosphere. Henk Neven returns after appearing in last night's Prom at the Royal Albert Hall, joined by fellow Radio 3 New Generation Artist Malin Christensson and young Dutch pianist Hans Eijsackers. J. S. Bach Musical Offering – Trio Sonata Musica ad Rhenum Jed Wentz flute/director As a prelude to Bach Day (Saturday 14 August), the Amsterdam-based ensemble Musica ad Rhenum plays music by the figurehead of this extraordinary musical dynasty and two of his composer sons. Two works honour the 300th anniversary of Wilhelm Friedemann Bach; and there are trio sonatas by his younger brother Carl Philipp Emanuel and by their father Johann Sebastian. The concert culminates in Johann Sebastian’s great trio sonata from the Musical Offering, his collection of canons, fugues and other pieces based on a theme by Frederick II of Prussia.
Following our day-long celebration at the Proms of the great ‘J. S.’ in 2008, we return to expose further layers of the composer’s enduring genius. The first two concerts of this year’s Bach Day bring the complete Brandenburg Concertos, performed by the English Baroque Soloists under the guidance of Sir John Eliot Gardiner. ‘No other set of concertos,’ maintains Gardiner, ‘can compare with Bach’s for diversity of instrumental make-up, for the prominence and variety of wind instruments, or for the myriad textural contrasts that this allows.’

At the centre is No. 5, with its elaborate cadenza for solo harpsichord; No. 3 uses its resources of 10 solo strings to devise ever-changing textures, dancing rhythms and sonorous harmonies; and No. 2 has a dazzling, notoriously challenging trumpet part that exploits the very top of the instrument’s range.
