Aamal’s Deaf Week As part of their Deaf Week (April 21 – April 27 2010), Aamal the Syrian Organization for the Disabled launched an awareness campaign in the Damascus Boulevard. For a week, members of Aamal, Deaf Program Coordinators accompanied by a range of celebrities who believed in the mission and vision of organization, circled different cafés and restaurants in Damascus Boulevard showing people that the deaf can communicate as much as those whose hearing abilities are perfect. In their awareness flyers, the Aamal team used
Beethoven as a reminder of the truth that deafness and genius can very well go hand in hand since, in his last years, Beethoven was deaf, and it was in those years that he composed one of his most famous musical compositions, the 5th Symphony. Deaf Week, coordinators of the Deaf Program at Aamal agreed, is only an overture to a much bigger movement to provide the deaf in Syria with access to information and considerate treatment at schools first, and universities later, making Syria a more and more friendly space for its deaf.

Segafredo Espresso Café, the only global café with Italian credibility offers a multi-sensual experience reflecting the lifestyle of the classic Italian café. The constant take for excellence exhibited by the Segafredo family is evident in product quality, efficient service and a friendly atmosphere all of which makes a positive difference in the quality offered to the customers. After 4 years of success in the Syrian market, George Al-Shawi shares with us his experience as the General Manger of Sega Fredo.
What is the reason for the new renovation Sega Fredo is undergoing? Sega Fredo has been open for 4 years in which there was no changes, so we decided to have a facelift in all our current branches. We want to make our customers feel that there is something new happening all the time, not to be stuck with old routines. The facelift included new interior design, new staff uniforms, and a brand new diverse menu. As well as adding a new customer service section, for the customers are our priority and we focus on providing them the best quality with the best service ever. Is that related to the new competition you’re facing? Somehow it is. Damascus in general and The Boulevard specifically have become very competitive in the past 2 years and I am happy about that, because I believe the best quality of services could only result out of free and fair competition.
13
14
Through the facelift and changes package, what else is included? Our policy is to sponsor events and NGOs all the time, such, educational, sports and health related events; anything beneficial to the country contributing positively to the society. This year our approach is to support new and smaller NGOs, like donating a day’s revenue or buying equipment and donating it; where we’ve realized that big NGOs already get all the support they need. You are one of the few companies indulging in charity, what inspired you? It is a feeling we had, like a need to contribute to the society, and help the people in it, and we imposed it on the company though it never was on the agenda. What else can we expect from Segafredo in the near future? We’re opening up 2 more branches, one in Aleppo and the other in Homs. We’re also expanding our catering company and centralizing it and adding new corporate clients to it. Other than that, we always have new plans and change and adapt; everyday you learn something new, I believe that I only know 15% about my work and that day by day my knowledge increases a bit.

interview
With its second opening, Yooshi group now celebrates Yooshi Jewelry, a brand registered in Syria adding to Yooshi Fashion, which will be making its fashion show debut in Milano this year. This is an interview with managing partner Chairman of Yooshi Group, Mrs. Hala Koutrach.
How did Yooshi start? What inspired you to open Yooshi fashion and Yooshi Jewelry? When my daughter was young, she suggested that we open an international brand based in Syria. Her name is Aya and so she decided to call it Yooshi. Her dream was to start a brand from Syria that would be exported abroad under the name Yooshi and that’s how it started. This is really for her, because now she’s studying fashion design in London and one day she can come back and take care of Yooshi. We started with Yooshi, as a brand with some Italian brands and Italian fashion and then we started Yooshi fashion haute couture. Now, our debut will be in one of Milano’s biggest fashion shows. When we started Yooshi fashion, we decided to also open Yooshi jewelry because they complement one another and Yooshi jewelry is also a brand. We started our own models and designs and almost all of our pieces carry the Yooshi brand logo whether fashion pieces or jewelry. In Yooshi jewelry, our goal is really to design outside the commercial jewelry market, to change the nature of our pieces and not conform to the repetitive pieces that all other jewelry shops are asked for. We are not sellers, but more like amateurs and we don’t have to conform. We know the risk and the difficulty of this, but we don’t want to stay in the familiar. We hope that Yooshi jewelry can also be known not only in Syria, but worldwide.
Who draws the designs of Yooshi fashion and Yooshi Jewelry? Are they Syrian, foreign? Or are there collaborations? We have Syrian, Lebanese and Italian designers and we’ve collaborated with many Italian designers and they have supervised the whole process. So, there’s a mix of nationalities of our designers but our products are pure Syrian made and registered here in Syria. What’s special about Yooshi fashion and Yooshi jewelry that wouldn’t be found anywhere else? In regards to Yooshi fashion, we rely on classic models from the 50’s and rendering them into a more modern design, or a new design. I believe that in this era, fashion gave women a classy and classic look and was also conservative, which is something that is important in our country. Because, I believe that a woman is more beautiful when she’s conservative. This idea of conservative clothing is definitely not what the fashion market wants to sell people today. In my opinion, however, the less a woman shows the more elegant and respectful she will look. Her clothes will look like it has more value and that’s what 50’s fashion gave women. And I love my pieces to be classic and universal that they would never go out of style. I can wear Yooshi pieces today, and tomorrow and next year, trusting that it won’t
17
18
look outdated. That’s how Yooshi haute-couture is different and that’s what they liked about Yooshi in the fashion world outside. They like that Yooshi designs are classic. Here, we always want to look untraditional so that we can be considered fashionable or stylish, but that’s not true. Something also special about Yooshi is the Yooshi colors, gold and white. Most of our pieces are made in those two colors, and the fabrics that we use are 50’s and 60’s fabrics and we gave dresses made in those styles names that the inspired them like Sophia, or Elizabeth because each piece is inspired by a great women who lived in a great time. Our main fashion designer, however, is Fabio Menconi. He’s one of the most famous fashion designers in Europe at the moment. He’s worked before for Escada, Valentino, and was the stylist of Sophia Loren and Sharon Stone. He’s really enjoying working with us, and working is Syria as well. And even though he’s Italian, he had no problem designing for a Syria-based haute couture. As for Yooshi jewelry, the Yooshi logo is always inside the design of the piece indirectly without you
thinking it’s a tag. It is within the actual design and you can tell that this piece is a Yooshi Jewelry piece. We also get diamonds that you wouldn’t easily find here in Syria. When does Aya Return to Syria? She will finish her degree in two years and count two more years for her master’s degree. But she already works with us on her holidays and has been working with Yooshi for two years now. She always has a say in how things should be handled and the projects she makes for schools, she also carries on as Yooshi fashion projects. The projects that other students are making just for research or to study, she’s making them as a real project for Yooshi fashion here. She’s always on top of things, and she has a fingerprint in Yooshi fashion and Yooshi jewelry. What’s the next step for Yooshi? After our debut in the Milano fashion show and our feature in Rendez – vous magazine, the next step is really unknown to me. We’ll have to wait and see how people will react to the Yooshi fashion debut because that’s the real beginning.

Healthy
Eating
Easy Tips for Planning a Healthy Diet and Sticking to It
Healthy eating is not about strict nutrition philosophies, staying unrealistically thin, or depriving yourself of the foods you love. Rather, it’s about feeling great, having more energy, and keeping yourself as healthy as possible– all of which can be achieved by learning some nutrition basics and using them in a way that works for you. Healthy eating begins with learning how to “eat smart”—it’s not just what you eat, but how you
eat. Your food choices can reduce your risk of illnesses such as heart disease, cancer, and diabetes, as well as defend against depression. Additionally, learning the habits of healthy eating can improve your health by boosting your energy, sharpening your memory and stabilizing your mood. Expand your range of healthy food choices and learn how to plan ahead to create and maintain a satisfying, healthy diet.

tip
Set yourself up for success To set yourself up for success, think about planning a healthy diet as a number of small, manageable steps rather than one big drastic change. If you approach the changes gradually and with commitment, you will have a healthy diet sooner than you think.
Simplify. Instead of being overly concerned with counting calories or measuring portion sizes, think of your diet in terms of color, variety and freshness— then it should be easier to make healthy choices. Focus on finding foods you love and easy recipes that incorporate a few fresh ingredients. Gradually, your diet will become healthier and more delicious. Start slow and make changes to your eating habits over time. Trying to make your diet healthy overnight isn’t realistic or smart. Changing everything at once usually leads to cheating or giving up on your new eating plan. Make small steps, like adding a salad (full of different color vegetables) to your diet once a day or switching from butter to olive oil when cooking. As your small changes become habit, you can continue to add more healthy choices to your diet. Every change you make to improve your diet matters. You don’t have to be perfect and you don’t have to completely eliminate foods you enjoy to have a healthy diet. The long term goal is to feel good, have more energy and reduce the risk of cancer and disease. Don’t let your missteps derail you—every healthy food choice you make counts. Think of exercise as a food group in your diet. Find something active that you like to do and add it to your day, just like you would add healthy greens, blueberries or salmon. The benefits of lifelong exercise are abundant and regular exercise may even motivate you to make healthy food choices a habit.

tip
Moderation is key People often think of healthy eating as an all or nothing proposition, but a key foundation for any healthy diet is moderation. Despite what certain fad diets would have you believe, we all need a balance of carbohydrates, protein, fat, fiber, vitamins, and minerals to sustain a healthy body.
Try not to think of certain foods as “off limits.” When you ban certain foods or food groups, it is natural to want those foods more, and then feel like a failure if you give in to temptation. If you are drawn towards sweet, salty or unhealthy foods, start by reducing portion sizes and not eating them as often. Later you may find yourself craving them less or thinking of them as only occasional indulgences. Think smaller portions. Serving sizes have ballooned recently, particularly in restaurants. When dining out, choose a starter instead of an entrée, split a dish with a friend, and don’t order supersized anything. At home, use smaller plates, think about serving sizes in realistic terms and start small. Visual cues can help with portion sizes—your serving of meat, fish or chicken should be the size of a deck of cards. A teaspoon of oil or salad dressing is about the size of a matchbook and your slice of bread should be the size of a CD case.

SIXT car rentals is one of the leading global vehicle rental and hire agencies, extending the first class rental service to the internet, where you can rent a car, SUV, sports car, or whatever kind of automobile you desire from the comfort of your own home.
Reaching Damascus in ‘09 after many years of accumulated experience and status from its start in 1912 in Munich, Talal Al-Rifai, General Manager of SIXT Syria managed to keep the franchise name polished, and was able to set SIXT Syria as one of the best operational branches globally, after winning the Best Branch Award in May 09’ and March 10’. “As Germany’s leading mobility service provider, SIXT is successfully expanding throughout the world. Together with licencees and partners, we are available to our customers at more than 3,500 service stations worldwide. So being awarded the Best Branch twice in competition with branches established long before us in first world countries is a privilege and a caliber that we strive to maintain.”, said Al-Rifai. SIXT’s approach to their business focuses on quality not quantity, where their long-term strategy is to cover all aspects of mobility by supplying innovative, top-quality services at excellent value for money, aiming to operate as a global player in the world’s future market of mobility, and to improve their market position.

in the market, for our customers are our concern”, and this is proven by the core principles SIXT set for itself: Tailor-made innovative mobility solutions; A modern fleet at favorable conditions; First-class partnerships with airlines and leading hotel chains; and efficient marketing and customer-centered communication. Delving more into details, we find that SIXT Syria is the only company that has buyback agreements with car suppliers, where all the cars in its fleet are bought back by the main supplier after 2 years of usage, making all rented cars almost brand new for the customers’ safety and delight. And if this was not enough, tailor made campaigns and offers depending on tourism seasons should do the trick, where each season the touristic demographic and needs change, and SIXT as one of the few companies adapting to that, from offering weekend packages in summers to visiting families from the gulf, to tours and guides to all the heritage sites and attractions in Syria to European groups visiting in the spring. “All our managers and executives are highly trained, they’ve all undergone training sessions in SIXT headquarters in Germany, including a Training trainee course, which enabled them to train all our lower-level employees to offer the best service
Talal Al-Rifai said in closure: “Our plans are to remain the best in offering high quality services and mobility solutions to our customers. We want to be a part of the bigger stronger reshaped tourism industry in Syria. We want to give outsiders a good image of our country”.

Calligraphic
Innovation
Opened on May 19th, the Calligraphic Innovation exhibition managed to be the highlight of the contemporary art events in this quarter for many. Visiting the world of traditional calligraphy with modern perspectives managed to appease even the tastes of those who were repelled by traditional calligraphy due to the regularity of its presence in their communities. What distinguished this exhibition is its introduction as a unique opportunity to present Arabic calligraphy as an innovational and refined art to show that this art form doesn’t require a radical deviation to acquire the status of modernity. Unlike the predominant traditional and ancestral exhibitions that only show the variations of the Ottoman calligraphic style, this one highlights a conscious approach to the essence of beauty and structure of calligraphy,
acquired through the advance of a liberal and creative imagination that set this art form into originality, expressed through its aesthetical structure and outlines that makes this art whole. The works exhibited in Rafia were by 4 creative Arab calligraphers: the Sudanese Tagelsir Hassan who received his Masters Degree in arts and graphics from “CNNA”, UK in 1983; the Egyptian Essam Abdul Fattah whose passion for calligraphy led him to study, teach and join many calligraphy institutions in the region; the Syrian Mouneer Al-Shaarani, whose works are internationally renowned and do not need to be introduced; and finally the Iraqi Wissam Shawkat, whose self-taught techniques managed to have his works displayed in many museums and private collections around the world.
35
36
Heralding and preceding this exhibition was a seminar on Arabic calligraphy in the gallery by Mouneer Al-Shaarani, delving into the details of contemporary Arabic calligraphy. which he sets as controlled by 2 trends; The first is a traditional trend that mummifies Arabic calligraphy and preserves it in a cage at museums of folklore, refusing the calligraphers the freedom to add, innovate and develop their art; while the second is the modern trend that modern colors and techniques of other arts to dress its lines and letters, degrading it into a crossbred style of work.
In ending, Al-Shaarani said: “I hope that the few works exhibited in this gallery provide you with some of the answers and are also a practical example of what the creative calligrapher can generate from the essence of the true form of Arabic calligraphy. This is an open invitation to all creative calligraphers to use their skill, talent, and knowledge alongside their experiences, to produce an original and unique piece of contemporary art using calligraphy that can be considered a real contribution to the path of its rebirth as a true art form.
