WHAT ARE SOME TIPS TO A SUCCESSFUL MARRIAGE? JOSH: Civil and religious ceremonies and cohabitation do not make you a better person. Your shortcomings are only magnified within a marriage. Patience and forgiveness will go much further than a quick retort or a heavy sigh. Also, husbands, you can be right, or you can be happy. CARLY: #1--As cliche as it sounds, don’t go to bed angry. Talk through whatever it is. Stay up late. Hash it out. Keep fighting for your relationship. #2--You are marrying a person full of imperfections. Marriage requires a million times more grace than you thought possible. BIGGEST LESSON YOUR PARTNER HAS TAUGHT YOU? JOSH: Carly sees right through me, but she’s kind, and she’s an encourager. I’ve learned that I usually need to dream a little bigger, remembering that I’m never alone. Carly is the best team player. I want to be a team player like Carly. CARLY: Josh loves by doing; little acts of service, if you will. He shows his love constantly throughout the day by tightening a doorknob, or washing a load of clothes, or taking the kids outside so I can focus on making dinner when he sees that my patience is wearing thin. The biggest lesson he has taught me is that showing your love by taking care of your partner, even if its just in the tiniest way, is extremely important. *

TIPS we ADORE

etermining a wedding budget is often the most difficult and

D

intimidating part of wedding planning. It can be a laborious and even an awkward task, but setting a budget early on in

the planning process will help guide decisions and maximize the money spent while also preventing budget-related disagreements along the way. Before your Pinterest vision board takes on a life of its own, it is important to take time to determine the total amount of money that you and your future spouse are prepared to spend on the big day. Mortgage payments, car payments, children, future travel plans, or student debt may significantly influence your budget and should be taken into consideration when mapping out your wedding-related finances. At this time it is also important to consider any financial assistance that you may be gifted from family members. If you are fortunate to have the financial support from parents or grandparents, you’ll want to have conversations with them early on to ensure all parties are on the same page. Mom and dad may want to cover a specific element of the wedding (for example, the cost of the flowers or the wine served at dinner) or they may prefer to contribute a lump sum. Your wedding day is a celebration of the vows you’ve exchanged with one another and the families you have united. After the wedding your heart should be full of happy memories, not anxiety over missed payments. Simply put, we could all learn something from Carrie Bradshaw: don’t let the wedding get bigger than Big (or your budget, for that matter). Once that final number has been reached, then comes the next – and equally as challenging – task of budget allocation.

Your wedding budget should be as unique as the vision you have for your wedding day. For that reason, the prototypical percentage-based budgets simply don’t work for everyone. FA L L 2 0 1 3

As early along in the planning process as possible, I suggest you collaborate with your fiancé to create a prioritized list of must haves. A wedding blueprint, if you will. For example: is an amazing meal paired with VQA wine at the top of your list? Are you looking to wow your guests with the flowers and décor? Do you absolutely have to have a collection of editorial-style photos to document your memories? Is the 6-piece band that was playing at the bar the night you met an essential element of your special day? The answers to these types of question will assist in determining where to splurge and where you should save. Furthermore, it will leave you with a prioritized list of the types of vendors you may want to hire and a starting point to begin researching them.

“The goal is always to tell the story of the day,” explains Meg. “I really want it real and natural—my artistic expressions of what happened on the day instead of me kind of controlling their day.” Meg avoids putting every couple through the same tried-andtrue series of poses, opting instead for “action posing”: she suggests an action—like a walk or a topic of conversation—to create a moment she can capture. “I think that’s how you get authentic images that really show a connection between people,” she says, “because they’re actually interacting when you’re taking the photo.” 22

make time for sunset photos near their venue—a castle, nearly a thousand years old, in the French countryside. “It was like something out of a dream,” Meg says of the experience. “I was just speechless.” That kind of fairy-tale wedding perfectly aligns with Meg’s style. She specializes in “sun-kissed, spontaneous and enchanted” weddings—the kind of couple for whom a happily ever after is inevitable. She approaches life with unshakeable optimism, and she needs clients who share that outlook.

Meg comes by her rose-coloured glasses honestly. “My dad is always telling us that we have to look to see the magic in everything…that’s kind of the essence of my photography,” she says. “If you look for enchantment you can find it anywhere.” Enchantment can take many forms: the sun peeking through the clouds on a stormy day, a farmer driving by with a bright red Depression-era Ford to use in the shoot, or even common pests. “In Alberta when I shoot there are always a lot of mosquitoes, but at sunset it lights them up and I swear it looks like pixie dust,” she says. Meg’s desire to share that enchanted mindset is the primary reason she became a photographer.

“I REALLY WANT TO INSPIRE PEOPLE TO SEE THE MAGIC IN LIFE, AND ALSO TO BELIEVE THAT LIVING HAPPILY EVER AFTER IS A CHOICE,” she says. “I just happen to use photography to show people that their life can be a fairy tale.”

it. When potential clients first contact her, Meg sets up a dinner date with only one rule: there’s absolutely no talking about the wedding until the end of the meal. “I just really want to get to know them, hear their story, what are they about, what are they passionate about,” she explains. Most of Meg’s photo packages include an engagement shoot, which presents another opportunity for her and the clients to get to know each other, and a chance for the client to get accustomed to action posing before the wedding. Throughout the year, Meg makes a point of following up and spending as much time with the couple as she can. Investing in a deeper relationship pays off in the end: when she and the clients are comfortable with one another, the couple is more relaxed, and it shows in the photos. “If they’re not super comfortable and they’re feeling awkward, the photos are going to come across that way,” she says. “That experience [during the shoot] is everything because when you look at the pictures you remember the moment. So if [the photographer] was someone that you didn’t like, and it was a super awkward situation, then they’re not going to love the photos as much.” When your photographer becomes a friend, it’s much more likely they’ll be able to capture the real you, and that’s what Meg strives for. And it’s more likely that real moments will happen— ones that you’ll want to remember forever. You never know what shape those moments will take. “It’s really cool just to watch the day unfold and see what kind of crazy things are going to happen,” Meg says, recalling a wedding she shot in the Dominican Republic. The ceremony was beautiful and was going smoothly, until the time came to exchange rings—and the couple realized the rings were still in the hotel room.

About two billion people worldwide watched as Prince William married Kate Middleton in 2011. The event called to mind any number of fairy tales: William was handsome in military regalia, Kate’s dress fit like a dream, and the happy couple rode off in a horse-drawn carriage to share a perfect kiss on the balcony of Buckingham Palace. But imagine if Kate had to juggle the responsibilities of booking Westminster Abbey, finding a caterer and conferring with a photographer in addition to looking radiant and greeting the public. Most likely, her smile would have been more than a little strained. Not every wedding is observed with the rapt attention of a quarter of the world’s population, like Kate’s. But on her wedding day, every bride should feel like a princess—and no princess should spend such an important occasion worrying that the DJ won’t show up. 26

“If the bride has the right attitude, the wedding’s going to be perfect.” A perfect wedding must also match the couple’s tastes and unique relationship dynamic. “[A wedding] is the start of the rest of someone’s life,” Nicole says. “You have to consider what’s going to make them happy and what’s true to their personalities.” Helping to guide the bride and groom toward that vision is one of Nicole’s favourite things about her job—and she has it down to a science. When a bride-to-be contacts Nicole through her website, she’s asked to answer questions like “Pearls or diamonds?” and “Heels or flats?”. The questions may seem obtuse, but each answer plays a role in helping Nicole get a sense of what the couple is all about. Pinterest is also used to help gauge the bride’s taste and how Nicole can best complement it. She offers ideas and guidance where she can, “but at the end of the day, what the bride wants is what the bride gets.” With plenty of experience planning special days for other brides, Nicole is well prepared for another task on her plate: she’s getting ready to walk up the aisle herself in September. She and her fiancé Royce, of Royce Sihlis Photography, both work in the wedding industry, so it gives them a unique perspective on the planning of their own event. “I think it’s a million times harder to plan your own wedding,” Nicole says. “I’ve really tried to take my own advice that I give brides. You have to take a step back and look at the big picture. Your wedding will be perfect if you stay true to you.” For Nicole and Royce—whose idea of a perfect date is a trip to Costco—this means serving a burger bar to their guests on gold charger plates. At the end of the day, a wedding is a celebration of love, and Nicole is always able to keep that fact at the centre of the weddings she plans. “I’m just so genuinely happy for couples that find each other,” she says. “It just makes me so happy to see other couples’ excitement about getting married.” www.createdlovely.ca www.facebook.com/createdlovelyevents

I was on a short trip to visit the family of a girlfriend of mine in Invermere, BC in 2008. We decided to go to a local hockey game one night. Wade grew up there in Invermere and was at the game (being an avid hockey player himself). We were introduced to each other through mutual friends. He actually sort of ignored me at first, I think he was kind of oblivious to my interest in him which was so cute.

Being that we had a small town romance we had many group outings instead of actual dates but the first time we had a moment to ourselves Wade made me dinner at his place. On Thanksgiving weekend (2012) we were getting ourselves ready for a family dinner and Wade was being a little awkward. I knew something was up but sort of brushed it off. He asked me to grab him a beer, I sort of wanted to tell him to go get it himself (haha), but I’m glad I didn’t! I opened the fridge and my ring was there staring back at me. PHOTOS BY CANDID APPLE PHOTOGRAPHY Thom and Brie’s wedding day vision was never one specific thing in itself it was more of a concept that they hoped would come together the way that they envisioned. From the very beginning they wanted a wedding that represented them, laid back, relaxed but yet still maintaining a certain level of class. This began with the idea of incorporating the theme of burlap and lace which eventually lead us to the creation of their rustic chic wedding. Along with this vision they also had a tight budget that they refused to let effect the desired out come of their dream wedding day. This vision quickly included DIY projects, stunning venues that spoke for themselves and special accent pieces. Thom and Brie never wanted their wedding to take on the pressure of being too serious, it was a day to celebrate and cherish among friends and family in an environment everyone felt comfortable in. Therefore our ultimate vision was to create something gorgeous that represented them as a couple and avoided the overly stuffy wedding.

legs and torso in a straight line by contracting through your abdominal muscles.

Jump sideways to the right landing on your right leg and crossing your left leg behind the right leg without touching the ground. Step 3 As you land on your right leg touch the BOSU ball with your left hand. Step 4 As soon as you land jump back to your left leg repeating the motion back and forth for the desired amount of repetitions.

Step 2 Slowly bend your elbows, lowering your chest as close to the ground as you can. Step 3 Push your body back up off the ground as quickly as you can until your elbows are completely extended. As you near the height of this movement, push your torso up into the air and across the ball so that your opposite hand lands on the bosu as you land. Step 4 Once you have landed back with your opposite hand on the bosu, slowly lower your chest back towards the ground. Repeat.
