NATO Secretary General visits SHAPE, new NATO command to support security assistance to Ukraine based in Germany

NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte met with the NATO Supreme Allied Commander Europe (SACEUR), General Christopher Cavoli and other senior officials during his first visit to the Alliance’s Supreme Headquarters (SHAPE) in the Belgian city of Mons on Monday, Oct. 14.

In the afternoon, the Secretary General travelled with General Cavoli to Wiesbaden, Germany to visit NATO’s new Security Assistance and Training Ukraine command at Clay Kaserne, where the Secretary General also met with German Defence Minister Boris Pistorius.

In talking with the troops, Mr. Rutte noted how important their work was, preparing the way for 700 personnel who will be stationed in Wiesbaden and at logistical nodes on the Eastern flank of the Alliance. He said that the new command will make a real difference for Ukraine on the battlefield and “for our own security.”

NSATU will coordinate the provision of military training and equipment for Ukraine by NATO Allies and partners — including artillery, ammunition and air defences — and will help Ukrainian forces prepare for the future.

The European Airborne Airlift Conference brought together members of five NATO medical teams for training from August 26-29, at Ramstein Air Base. The EAAC initiative involves our NATO partners by exchanging knowledge

and strategies to increase interoperability.

Aeromedical evacuation was one of the topics discussed amongst delegates from the United States, Belgium, United Kingdom, Netherlands and Norway. The different medical teams exchanged experiences and knowledge to better familiarize themselves for possible future scenarios.

One of the topics discussed was

cross-training on the four airframes utilized by AE in the event of a NATO Article 5 scenario. In this situation an ally becomes victim to an armed attack, and AE is a crucial aspect of medical evacuations.

Some of the airframes used by NATO countries during a mass casualty or critical care transport include the A400M, C130s, A330 and C-17. Cross-training enables personnel to use more aircraft dur-

ing operations and expand their mission set.

During the conference, the teams joined together for training flights with NATO partners and shared standards to remain unified as a team.

An issue the partnering nations wanted to tackle during peacetime operations is the challenge of access and availability of aircrafts during an Article 5 event. This is

where holding realistic training with multiple nations is key to success.

Currently, each nation holds its own internal courses related to AE and Critical Care Air Transport Team Capability, or CCATT, although there are no NATO courses outside of annual exercises.

The next EAAC will be held in March 2025 at RAB. All NATO partners are encouraged to participate.

ENERGY TIP OF THE WEEK

Tips on how to efficiently use your heating system:

» Keep the doors of heated or unheated rooms closed to ensure heat remains inside occupied spaces.

» Also ensure that radiators are not blocked by furniture or objects that will prevent heat from circulating.

» Close the rolladen shutters in the evening. This reduces the amount of heat emitted to the outside.

A tribute to resilience, sacrifice at Lajes Field, Morón AB

In September, 65th Air Base Group at Lajes Field and Morón Air Base gathered Airmen, civilians, and families to honor and remember the lives lost, the bravery displayed, and the sacrifices made by those who have served our country. These events marked both National Patriot Day, on September 11, and the POW/MIA Recognition Day vigil, on September 19-20, paying tribute to the victims of the 2001 attacks, as well as American Prisoners of War (POWs) and those still Missing in Action (MIA).

**Patriot Day Ceremonies: September 11**

The ceremony at Lajes Field began with words from Captain Amy Bartee, Lajes Installation Chaplain, who reminded everyone of the significance of this day. “We come here to remember a day that started out like many other days, never knowing that this day would change everything forever,” she said. With solemn reverence, Capt Bartee honored the innocent lives lost, the mothers, fathers, children, and the courageous individuals who sacrificed their lives so that others may live. “Today we honor their sacrifices and their legacies,” she emphasized.

remarks from Mr. Chris Gerwick, Lajes Fire Department Chief, who spoke about the bravery and dedication of first responders, highlighting the tradition of the bell as a symbol of a firefighter’s call to duty and a reminder of those who made the ultimate sacrifice. “We use these traditions as symbols that reflect honor and respect on those who have given so much and served so well,” he stated. Lt Col Raul Cantualla, Commander of the 65th Air Base Squadron, reflected on the enduring impact of September 11th, reminding the audience of the 2,977 lives lost and the resilience that emerged. “It is crucial to recognize not only the sorrow but the resiliency that emerged from the ashes,” he remarked, urging all to pay tribute to the legacy of those lost by fostering empathy, unity, and embodying the lessons learned in the years that followed.

Simultaneously, at Morón Air Base, Lt Col Christopher Curry, Commander of the 496th Air Base Squadron, addressed the audience acknowledging that while some may not remember September 11, others recall it as the day that changed history. He urged participants to carry the significance of their uniforms with pride during the 5K run/walk event that followed the ceremo-

ny, drawing inspiration from the bravery of first responders like firefighter Stephen Siller, who ran to Ground Zero with 60 lbs of equipment to aid others.

He called for moments of silence to reflect on the victims, the courage of responders, and the spirit of unity that emerged from the tragedy. “Never forget,” he concluded, urging everyone to uphold the strength, unity, and compassion demonstrated on that day, remaining always together, never alone, and united in a shared purpose.

**POW/MIA Recognition Vigil: September 19-20**

The following week, throughout the 24-hour vigil, the POW/MIA and U.S. flags remained in motion both at Lajes Field and Morón Air Base, symbolizing the enduring hope and commitment to bring every missing service member home. The event, held in observance of National POW/MIA Recognition Day, served as a reminder of the 81,600 Americans still unaccounted for, from World War II to recent conflicts.

At Morón Air Base, the event began with the Command team and AFSA Council walking the flag from the headquarters building to the track to mark the start of the vigil. Over 47 Airmen and civilian personnel par-

ticipated, collectively covering an impressive distance of 196 laps or 49 miles. TSgt James Dillahunt and TSgt Mandelyn Cook-Jones, members of the Council, concluded the vigil by walking the POW/MIA flag back to the headquarters, followed by the U.S. Air Force Security Forces Flight and the Spanish Air Force Security Forces Flight raising both the U.S. and Spanish flags.

Meanwhile, at Lajes Field, approximately 110 volunteers, including families, participated in the vigil. Lt Col Alan Vaughn, Commander of the 765th Air Base Squadron, addressed the participants expressing gratitude for their attendance despite the weather. “This was something so small for us to give back to those who gave so much,” he remarked, acknowledging how the morning’s rain was a minor inconvenience compared to the hardships endured by those who faced captivity and hardship.

He encouraged everyone to reflect on the many untold stories of POWs and MIAs, reminding the immense debt owed to those who served. “Let us remember that the freedoms we enjoy were secured by their sacrifices,” he expressed, highlighting the importance of honoring their legacy by leading lives that reflect their courage and upholding the values they fought to protect.

Harrison Miccio reports! Honorary reporter interviews

USAG Rheinland-Pfalz Command Sergeant Major

Reporters come in all shapes and sizes, from public affairs specialists to traditional media — and even kids. No matter the form, telling the Army’s story is critical. Harrison Miccio, a kid by day and U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz’s first ever honorary reporter (after school), took on that important role Sept. 18 at the AFN Kaiserslautern Studio on Vogelweh Air Station.

The garrison’s Public Affairs Office launched a coloring contest in August at the MWR Community Expo and shared on their social media pages for children living in the Kaiserslautern and Baumholder military communities, asking them to draw what they loved or liked about life in Germany. The winner would earn the title of U.S. Army Garrison Public Affairs “Reporter for a Day” and the chance to interview the garrison’s Command Sgt. Maj. Raymond Wrensch. Harrison was randomly selected as the lucky winner from the pool of submissions, announced live on air during the garrison’s hour on the Morning Magic show at the AFN Kaiserslautern studio.

Harrison toured the studio before grilling Wrensch with hard topics to include garrison operations, living in Germany and Paw Patrol. Following the interview, Wrensch awarded Harrison with a “Certificate of Awesomeness” for his journalistic excellence.

Listen to the interview here: https://www. dvidshub.net/video/938702/studio-reporterday-interviews-command-sergeant-majorraymond-wrensch

Harrison: I’m Harrison, garrison reporting for the day. What’s your name?

Wrensch: My name is Raymond Wrensch, and I’m the Command Sergeant Major for U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz.

I would like to interview you today. That would be great! Let’s go ahead and do that.

What’s your favorite thing about Germany?

What’s my favorite thing about Germany? Hmm I think, my favorite thing so far was going to LEGOLAND with all my kids and riding on all the rides and having a bunch of fun down there.

What do you want to be when you grow up?

What do I want to be when I grow up? Oh man. Well, I guess, maybe one day I want to be a farmer and have a little farm and raise some animals and teach my kids about raising animals.

Well, I want to be a pilot! You want to be a pilot?

I’m going to drive a fast mover. That’s great.

Fast movers are so fast. Do you know how fast they go?

Really fast!

Really fast that is pretty fast.

What does a garrison do?

The garrison — we do a lot. But our most important mission is to take care of everyone that lives inside the Army garrison and we provide services like daycare and we help the schools and we got a bunch of crews, firemen, some police officers and guys that drive around in construction trucks and take care of everything. I guess they’re kind of like the Paw Patrol in some aspect.

What’s your favorite Paw Patrol character?

My favorite Paw Patrol character — I believe his name is Rubble.

My favorite one is Marshall because I have a Marshall costume.

USAFE-AFAFRICA, Zambian military leaders hold workshop to address gender-based violence

LUSAKA, ZAMBIA — Representatives

from U.S. Air Forces Africa and U.S. Africa Command and members of the Zambian Defense Force hosted a workshop to strengthen the ZDF’s capabilities to combat genderbased violence, Sept. 23 to Oct. 2.

Brig. Gen. Otis C. Jones, USAFE-AFAFRICA Chief of Staff, served as the senior U.S. ranking officer. He engaged with Zambian senior leaders to help build the capacity of the ZDF to protect women from violence and sexual assault under the Women, Peace, and Security framework.

“The U.S. military, through U.S. Africa Command and U.S. Air Forces Africa, has been proud to partner with Zambia and

other nations in Africa to integrate WPS into security cooperation activities,” Jones said. “We firmly believe that operationalizing WPS creates a more effective fighting force and helps us achieve lasting peace.”

The event closely followed the Women, Peace and Security Forum at the Association of African Air Forces Working Group, also hosted in Zambia, Sept. 17. The WPS Forum served as a platform to address common challenges women face in their respective air forces and the integration of gender focused approach.

“As military leaders, we know that preventing gender-based violence is essential to building a strong and cohesive force. GBV affects all genders and is a direct challenge to security. By addressing GBV,

we ensure that men and women can fully contribute to the defense sector, which in turn strengthens our entire team and our entire nation,” Jones said.

This workshop marked the completion of the third phase of the five-phase Preventing Gender-Based Violence program in Zambia, with plans to continue advancing WPS objectives throughout 2025.

For more information about this workshop, please read AFRICOM’s article: United States and Zambia Strengthen Efforts to Combat Gender-Based Violence https://www.africom.mil/pressrelease/35604/ united-states-and-zambia-strengthen-effortsto-combat-gender-based-violence

You got a Marshall costume, that’s great! Is that what you’re going to be for Halloween?

Yes. That’s awesome!

Reporting from “Ktown” Germany, have a good day, everyone!

US Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz leads way for Army in energy savings

U.S. Army Garrison RheinlandPfalz achieved the highest energy savings across the entire U.S. Army in 2023, a notable community achievement, especially during the ongoing European energy crisis.

The commitment to sustainability at USAG-RP has led to tangible results, highlighting the effectiveness of collective efforts and careful resource management. USAGRP is responsible for generating over 14 percent of the total available Resilient Energy Funding for Readiness and Modernization (REFoRM) Year 2024 funds for

the U.S. Army Materiel Command, an impressive $2.6 million. This substantial contribution not only underscores the Garrison’s commitment to energy efficiency but also its pivotal role in driving readiness and modernization efforts within the Army.

Such extraordinary success would not have been possible without the concerted efforts of all tenant units, mission partners and organizations within USAG-RP’s 29 site footprint. Turning down radiators to the three setting in winter, shutting doors and windows while heating a space, and generally working towards using less energy where possible all contributed to reducing energy consumption at

the Garrison. The consistent dedication and commitment to sustainability and energy conservation from all partners has established USAG-RP as a model of energy-saving excellence throughout U.S. Army installations in the continental United States and overseas.

Special recognition is also owed to the Department of Public Works Army Energy and Water Management Team (AEWMP), led by Director Truett Sanchez, Division Chiefs Hans-Karl Betzhold and Anja Kotzerke, Energy Managers Zach Eberbach and Thomas Hanke, as well as their contracted Resource Efficiency Managers (REMs): Don Carlson, Michael Zalvis, and Colin

Fire Prevention Week 2024: USAG Rheinland-Pfalz emphasizes vital role of smoke alarms

Fire Prevention Week is observed every year during the week of October 9, in remembrance of the Great Chicago Fire which ignited on Oct. 8, 1871, and resulted in devastating damages. Since 1922, the National Fire Protection Association has been at the forefront of promoting this important public awareness campaign.

This year’s theme is “Smoke alarms: Make them work for you!™.”

During Fire Prevention weeks, first responders concentrate on enforcing the critical role of smoke alarms in fire safety and prevention, engaging with the community to provide essential information about the proper use and maintenance of smoke alarms, as well as share vital safety tips to help individuals protect themselves and those around them.

In support of National Fire Prevention Week, USAG Rheinland-Pfalz’s Directorate of Emergency Services DES is organizing a range of activities such as videos, open houses at fire stations, evacuation drills, school visits, information booths, and announcements on AFN Kaiserslautern.

“Some of the most common cause of fires in the home are cooking-related incidents, whether they are attended or unattended,” said Robert Womble Jr., deputy fire chief of the Directorate of Emergency Services at U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz. “While smoke alarms cannot prevent fires from starting, they are essential for detecting smoke and alerting occupants to potential danger.”

To ensure that smoke alarms function effectively and can reliably detect smoke and

fire, it is crucial for individuals to understand the proper maintenance practices associated with these devices.

“Smoke alarms should be tested monthly and replaced every 10 years,” said Womble.

In addition to performing monthly tests and changing the batteries as needed, occupants should refrain from tampering with the smoke alarms.

“For optimal safety, it is recommended to invest in sealed Lithium-Ion battery detectors that come with a 10-year lifespan,” said Womble. “These alarms are designed with sealed batteries, meaning that users cannot change the batteries themselves.”

This feature encourages timely replacement of the entire unit, ensuring that the smoke alarm remains effective throughout its operational life. According to Womble, following these guidelines can greatly enhance fire safety measures and help people protect their homes and loved ones.

He also highlighted the importance of installing smoke alarms in multiple locations within a home to ensure safety. Specifically, smoke alarms should be placed in every bedroom, outside each separate sleeping area such as hallways, and on every level of the home, including the basement.

“In accordance with German law, all rented homes and apartments, regardless of the tenants’ nationality, must be equipped with functioning smoke alarms. It is the landlords’ responsibility to install, test, and maintain these devices to ensure safety,” Womble said.

Fire Prevention Week is observed every year during the week of October 9. To ensure that garrison personnel are well-informed and prepared to respond effectively in the event of a fire, USAG Rheinland-Pfalz’s Directorate of Emergency Services is working with the NFPA to enhance safety for Soldiers, Civilians, and families. In support of National Fire Prevention Week, DES orgnaized a range of activities such as videos, open houses at fire stations, evacuation drills, school

From mascot to US Army Officer

and photos

After graduating from Louisiana State University and spending most of his time as a mascot, Public Health Command Europe Soldier decides to join the U.S. Army as an environmental science and engineering officer.

Texas native 2nd Lt. Nathan Istre joined the U.S. Army straight after college in 2021 as a combat medic and later commissioned as a 72 D, known as environmental science and engineering officer.

Istre has been accustomed to the military life with both of his parents in the service.

“Joining just made sense and the Army has so many opportunities,” said Istre. “I enlisted at first because I didn’t want an office job. I wanted to be able to work in the field and after two years I commissioned to further develop my professional career.”

At Public Health Command Europe, Istre provides preventive medicine support to operational units across the entire footprint.

“Units that need our support will reach out to us and we will provide assets to conduct preventive medicine missions in form of soil, water or air sampling for example,” said Istre. “I enjoy getting a taste of all the Army has to offer, in my career field we distribute individual support to anyone and get a peek into all sorts of missions.”

According to Istre, he likes the variety that the job provides because every day is different. Recently, Istre conducted a base camp assessment in Africa. Environmental health hazards can seriously impact the mission and safety of the service members. It is an ongoing, never-ending duty to educate and perform sanitary inspections as well as water, soil, and air surveillance to reduce disease and nonbattle injury.

Istre has always enjoyed trying out new things. He earned a “biological engineering degree at LSU which is a pretty wide-ranging degree“ and balanced study time with joining the University mascot team. For four years, he wore the Mike the Tiger suit, the official LSU mascot, at football and basketball games, press conferences and charity events to represent his university.

His time as a mascot has shaped his leadership philosophy and influenced his life.

“It takes a certain amount of audacity and lack of fear to succeed,” said Istre. “As a college mascot, you are the first one on the field and thousands of eyes stare at you which can be uncomfortable, but you just have to push through and know why you do it.”

Istre applies the same mentality for his career in the Army, “I will keep going for as long as it energizes me. I will stay in for as long as the Army excites me.”

Military health expert clarifies ‘No Pain No Gain’ workout myths

Injuries are the leading reason for military medical visits each yeargoes to DHA Public Health.

Department of Defense active duty service members require medical treatment for injuries almost 5 million times each year (for around 1.5 million individual injuries). Injuries cost millions of lost duty and training days, and billions of dollars each year.

“Some injuries are caused by acute trauma, such as from falling or a vehicle accident, but the majority of military injuries are cumulative micro-traumatic injuries, often referred to as overuse injuries,” said U.S. Army Capt. Regis Pearson, a physiologist and chief of the Injury Prevention Branch for Defense Centers for Public Health–Aberdeen.

A recent military reportgoes to DTIC shows that over 75 percent of all injuries to active duty service members are due to cumulative microtrauma.

“Most of these overuse injuries usually involve the musculoskeletal, or MSK, system which includes bones, muscles, tendons, as well as ligaments and other joint tissues,” said Pearson. “A doctor may use a medical code for ‘pain’ in a specific body area if a more identifiable injury diagnosis is not determined. Because the pain is a result of damage to tissues in that body area, the diagnosis is still categorized as an injury.”

In a 2019 studydoes to DTIC.mil of three years of soldier medical data, almost a quarter of all the initial service members’ injury visits were for a diagnosis of MSK “pain” to a body part.

“The back, especially the lower back, is a particularly common body area associated with injury pain codes,” said Pearson. “The knee, ankle, and shoulder are the next most frequent body areas linked to pain diagnoses. Though somewhat less common, hip pain

is also a problem, especially among female service members.”

Pearson said the common physiological factor of these pain codes is that they usually are associated with the complex tissues of a joint, which is not the same as delayed muscle soreness.

“There are two types of muscle pain,” he said. “Acute or immediate pain in a muscle felt during an activity is indication of a strain or tear that needs medical attention. Muscle soreness that develops a day or two after an exercise is typically referred to as delayed onset muscle soreness, or DOMS.”

Like other forms of MSK pain, DOMS is a form of tissue damage that the body responds to by increasing inflammation, said Pearson.

“Unlike joint or bone damage, however, the body is often able to repair the microscopic muscle damage that is associated with DOMS in two to three days,” said Pearson. “This is what inspired the phrase ‘no pain, no gain.’ Unfortunately, misunderstanding the “no pain no gain” concept can lead to more serious or even chronic injury-related conditions.”

‘No Pain No Gain; Myths

Pearson reminds everyone that this phrase doesn’t apply to joints—such as the spinal area, knee, ankle, shoulder, or hip— and corrects some common misconceptions, including:

Myth: Sudden sharp pain during an exercise just means you are pushing your body to improve.

Fact: Feeling sharp sudden pain during an activity may mean an acute injury. Immediately stop activity to rest the body area and consider medical evaluation. Myth: A body will adapt to muscle soreness, so it is a necessary part of training. Not feeling any pain means you are not working hard enough.

Fact: Delayed onset muscle soreness is the

training, such as strength, power, and balance activities. Service members can enhance their fitness through individual physical training but should balance the amount and types of exercise with unit training activities. The U.S. Army offers online guidance for safely training for its fitness testgoes to Army.mil.

• Stop smoking or using tobacco products. In addition to increasing risk of MSK injury, tobacco is a leading risk factor for heart and lung disease and cancer. Tobacco use has been found to increase chances for hospitalizations, missed workdays and impaired vision. Cessation services are available to service members through TRICAREgoes to TRICARE.mil.

• Eat a healthy diet in addition to maintaining a balanced exercise regimen. The military is making it easier for service members to find high-quality foods and drinks to boost fitness, strength, and health as part of the Go for Green®goes to HPRC initiative. Information and good food choices at dining facilities or galleys help service members make smart choices.

body’s protective response to new or excessive exercise; it is not an indication of training effectiveness. Severe DOMS can even hinder a person’s ability to recover efficiently if the muscle is too damaged.

Myth: Delayed onset muscle soreness is a type of pain that the body will repair and recover from on its own.

Fact: In severe cases of DOMS, the body’s repair mechanism may be overwhelmed, especially if high exertion activity is continued. In many cases of DOMs, it is generally advised to continue using the muscles through low exertion activity for at least a day or two to allow time for the body to recover.

Myth: MSK pain will go away over time.

Fact: Continued pain, especially near joints, is a sign that the body is trying to repair some form of MSK tissue which, if ignored, may worsen the severity of the condition. This can lead to longer recovery periods or even long-term pain conditions such as chronic back pain or arthritis.

What Can You Do?

Pearson said though the long-term conditions that result from MSK pain are common and often unavoidable, their severity can be reduced.

• First, reduce your chances of injury by addressing leading risk factors of injury:

• Maintain a healthy body weight and keep body fat percentage with the DOD limitsgoes to WHS. Evidence shows that personnel with excessive body weight and high body fat are at a higher risk for MSK injury. In addition, service members who are underweight are also more likely to get injured.

• Maintain a regular exercise routine to achieve fitness levels. Those who don’t regularly maintain high levels of fitness are more likely to get injured. Exercise should include a balance of activities like aerobic conditioning and anaerobic

• Second, seek medical evaluation of problematic MSK pain early on, and follow medical guidance for recovery time and restricted duty or activity. Otherwise, you may develop chronic pain.

Chronic paingoes to VA, which is pain that lasts longer than six months, can impact your mood and make it difficult to work and participate in everyday activities. Some examples of chronic MSK pain are back pain, arthritis, and other joint problems.

Pearson said that maintaining a healthy body weight and fitness levels can increase your resilience against injury; it is critical to stay in tune with your body’s pain feelings.

“Trying to ‘tough it out’ can make things worse in some situations,” he said. “It is important to differentiate between mild DOMS and a more serious pain. Stop activity for more serious conditions and follow your provider’s recovery guidance.”

Aiden Wall’s journey: A powerful testament to faith, resilience, strength

Against overwhelming odds, Kaiserslautern High School football player #73 Aiden Wall’s journey stands as a powerful testament to faith, resilience and strength. On a fateful day that would alter the course of Aiden’s life — following a seemingly routine block during a game against Stuttgart High School — an underlying, previously undiagnosed illness was revealed, placing Aiden in critical condition.

First responders Juanita DuBon, Stephen Burkham and Coach Katina Campbell acted swiftly and decisively, providing immediate care that ultimately saved Aiden’s life. Their quick thinking and dedication were crucial in stabilizing him before he was transported by ambulance to a hospital in Stuttgart. Battling severe health challenges that included four major surgeries in less than seven days, Aiden’s story is one of unwavering strength and divine intervention.

Once at the Klinikum Stuttgart-Katharinenhospital, the medical team there worked tirelessly to address Aiden’s condition. Each surgery was a battle, but Aiden’s spirit

remained unbroken. The pediatric doctors and nurses at the hospital provided lifesaving support while demonstrating their unwavering commitment to his recovery. Their expertise and compassion played a vital role in Aiden’s fight for life.

Throughout this challenging time, the power of community became evident. The prayers and support from family, friends and the broader Kaiserslautern and Stuttgart military communities created a powerful network of hope and strength. Coaches and teammates rallied together, offering encouragement and solidarity during a “Lifting up Player #73” prayer service with over 400 attendees at Kaiserslautern High School (KHS) reminding Aiden that he is not alone in his struggle. Their collective faith and love served as a lifeline, helping him to persevere through each setback.

During Aiden’s challenging hospital stay, the deep protection of God and Jesus offered essential comfort and strength to him and his family. The unwavering support from his loved ones — alongside my unit commander, 405th Army Field Support Brigade Commander Col. Ernest Lane II, and his wife, Tricia Lane, as well as 405th AFSB Command

Sgt. Maj. Terrell Brisentine and KHS Air Force Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps Instructors Lt. Col. (retired) William Conley and Master Sgt. (retired) Donald Cruz — played a crucial role in Aiden’s recovery journey.

Also playing a crucial role were Susan Paul, the KHS principal, and the team from the 405th AFSB’s Logistics Readiness Center Stuttgart, specifically Javier Gonzalez and DJ Jackson. Additionally, KHS coaches Robert “Duke” Allen, Jay Dayao, Kenneth Butler, and Vaponne Sears — along with the support from the coaches at Stuttgart High School — were all vital to Aiden during his healing journey.

In a heartfelt gesture, the KHS coaches ensured the team presented Aiden with the

winning ball from the Stuttgart vs. KHS football game (19-0), and the KHS football team also paid tribute to Aiden at their next game against Lakenheath High School, where they placed his jersey in the spot where Aiden plays during the first offensive possession of the game.

The presence and assistance from the U.S. Army Garrison Stuttgart team and the Military Family Life Counselors have also helped create a supportive environment essential to Aiden and his loved ones. Furthermore, the love and prayers from Col. (chaplain) David Curlin from the USAG Stuttgart Religious Support Office — who spent countless hours visiting, praying and ensuring Aiden’s wellbeing — exemplifies the deep sense of community and care that surrounds him.

This collective support not only uplifted Aiden’s spirits but also reinforced the belief that he was never alone in his fight, as the power of faith and community worked hand-in-hand to guide him through this difficult time.

Aiden is a warrior — a resilient young man whose journey has inspired many. This experience is a testament to the faith, resilience and strength of the human spirit as well as the profound impact of community support. As he continues to recover, Aiden’s story serves as a reminder that — with faith, love, and determination — one can overcome even the most daunting challenges. Aiden’s journey is far from over, but with the continued support of those around him, his mother and father believe he will emerge stronger than ever, ready to take on whatever comes next.

The entrance opens at 7:00 p.m., while the disco starts at 10:00 p.m. Costumes are welcome! Details: https://www.burgsatzvey.de/ veranstaltungen/halloween-2024-1/

HALLOWEEN AT THE ZOO

OCT. 31, 5 P.M.–8:30 P.M., ZOO SIEGELBACH

Who has the courage to enter the “house of horrors?” Who is brave enough to encounter the “monsters of the sky?” Who is courageous enough to watch the “feeding of the dwarves and giants?” Afterwards all young and older visitors are invited to a “creepy dinner!”

SAMHAIN FESTIVAL

OCT. 31, KELTENDORF, STEINBACH (DONNERSBERG)

The Celtic village in Steinbach will top off the season with a traditional Samhaim festival. The event has its origins 2,000 years ago and marks the end of the year and beginning of winter. Celts then ate, drank and celebrated the occasion together. The village will offer displays, bonfires, activities for kids and a walk with torches to the circle of spooky Celtic statues at the garden nearby, where guests will receive information about Celtic traditions at the large bonfire. Don’t miss out on this very special and different “Halloween” event. Visitors are requested to carpool, as parking is limited in the small village. For details, see: http://www.keltendorf-steinbach.de/

ABC IN KMC: Oberes Glantal

A hidden gem in the mild west

Most Kaiserslautern Military Community members live either in Kaiserslautern County or in the city. However, others have ventured out a bit further and reside in Kusel County. Neighboring Kaiserslautern, it includes three large union communities: KuselAltenglan, Lauterecken-Wolfstein and Oberes Glantal with over 2,000 KMC members, let’s head out west and check out their neighborhood!

Nestled in the picturesque Glan River valley, Oberes Glantal is a charming region that offers a blend of natural beauty, historical sites, and vibrant local culture, just west of Ramstein Air Base. The municipality, with about 30,000 inhabitants, comprises several quaint towns and villages.

Schönenberg-Kübelberg is the largest town and serves as the administrative center of Oberes Glantal. Known for its welcoming atmosphere and a great starting point for exploring the region, it hosts a weekly farmers’ market held every Friday morning at the marketplace where you can find a variety of fresh local produce, baked goods, meats, cheeses, and regional specialties.

A mysterious Bierkeller

The bierkeller in SchönenbergKübelberg is a highlight for beer enthusiasts and brings a slice of traditional beer culture to the region. Offering a variety of local brews in a gemütlich (cozy) setting, it also has a rich history and a few intriguing legends associated with it.

The cellar was constructed around 1843 by Silesian miners who dug it into the sandstone on “Sandhiwwel.” Legend says that the ghost of Daniel Niergarth, the first brewer who took over in 1844, still roams the tunnels and some visitors have reported hearing mysterious footsteps and seeing shadows moving in the dimly lit corridors.

A hidden treasure buried is said to be buried in the bierkeller. During World War II, it is believed that some valuable items were hidden in the tunnels to protect them from being looted. It has never been found, adding an air of mystery to the site. The Miners’ Secret claims that miners discovered a secret underground

passage leading to the nearby forest, which was supposedly used to smuggle goods and evade taxes. Initially used for brewing and storing beer, the tunnels of the bierkeller were later repurposed as air-raid shelters during World War II. Today, it is part of the “Begehbares Geschichtsbuch” (Walkable History Book) project, which aims to make local history accessible and engaging. The bierkeller is open to the public every first Sunday of the month from 2–5 p.m., group tours and beer tasting can also be arranged by contacting the local municipality. An elevator enables access for individuals with limited mobility.

Rendezvous with nature

Ohmbachsee: Recreational haven Ohmbachsee is a central attraction in Oberes Glantal. The expansive water surface and surrounding parkland is ideal for relaxation and recreation and offers plenty of activities such as boating, fishing, and picnicking. The annual “Romantisches Seefest” held in July attracts thousands of visitors.

Flora and fauna for kids to explore: The naturally designed children’s playground on Rosenstrasse (behind the police station) in Kübelberg opened after extensive renovation. Ideas from children and citizens were included in the design and planning.

Hiking Trails: The most popular hiking event “Schlemmerwanderung” takes

place in May, where participants can hike, dine and enjoy spectacular views over the countryside. Some of the trails are paved and ideal for wheelchairs, inline skates and strollers. Oberes Glantal region is also known for its scenic hiking trails that bring history to life:

• Diamantschleiferweg offers a glimpse into the region’s historical diamond cutting industry.

• Kirschenlandwanderweg is perfect for nature lovers and takes you through picturesque cherry orchards.

• Ritter Gerin Weg features historical landmarks, including the Gallows Hill.

• Villa Rustica Trail is a 6-kilometer circular trail starting from HerschweilerPettersheim, leading directly to the Roman estate.

Historical highlights

Villa Rustica is an openair museum in HerschweilerPettersheim that showcases a former Roman estate from the 2nd to 3rd century. Gallows Hill is located in Schönenberg-Kübelberg and was historically used for public executions from the 12th to the 16th century. A replica of the gallows now serves as a landmark along the “Ritter Gerin” hiking trail. Jewish Museum Steinbach am Glan: Steinbach was the center of Jewish life in the southern part of the district for centuries. One of the earliest synagogues in Jewish regional communities was built there in 1725 and the

town developed into a center of Jewish life. In the middle of the 19th century, almost 30 percent of the population was Jewish. Isidor Triefus, born in Steinbach am Glan in 1845, founded the diamond industry in Westrich.

Diamond Cutter Museum

Brücken: Sawing and grinding — these work steps are used to refine the rough diamond into a sparkling gem. The diamond cutting museum in Brücken presents working techniques in trueto-original and fully functional workplaces. Exhibits, picture panels and modern video and computer presentations demonstrate the eventful history of diamond cutting in the region.

Mining Farmers Museum

Breitenbach: Mining farming is an essential part of the historical development of the region. The museum impressively documents the life and work of the mining farmers. Visitors can view a replica mine tunnel, experience life in typical living conditions and everyday items used by the miner farmers. The bakery is also in operation for various events, and a true-to-original and operational forge was set up in the inner courtyard of the museum. Opening hours: Wednesdays from 7–10 p.m. and every first Sunday from 2–6 p.m. Appointments can also be made at Oberes Glantal municipal administration at 06373/ 50 40.

Get back on track!

If you are ready to test your muscles and want to explore the

area with nostalgic charm, this is a great experience for young and old, just bordering Oberes Glantal! A draisine is a singletrack, human-powered vehicle without pedals. Enjoy the idyll of the Glantal during the summer season, your eyes can wander, you have plenty of time and don’t need to steer. There are stops in every town and in beautiful places along the route where trolleys can be parked to explore museums, architectural treasures, art and culture, and regional gastronomy.

Other scenic towns in Oberes Glantal include GlanMünchweiler, which is a peaceful village perfect for those seeking tranquility, while Gries is a small village that offers a serene escape with its beautiful landscapes.

Markets and festivities

Johannismarkt is always on the weekend prior to June 24, and the largest folk fest. Schönenberger Kerwe is celebrated in August, Brücken and Kübelberger Kerwe in September, and Christmas Markets are held in December. An exciting horse market draws thousands of equestrian fans to Quirnbach Nov. 13 this year.

There is a lot to explore out “west” with soft rolling hills, serene landscapes and plenty of history. See for yourself and make sure to enjoy and share your discoveries in the picturesque Upper Glan Valley! 1.Burg

Frankenstein

For an authentically German – and fairly terrifying –Halloween event, look no further than Halloween at Burg Frankenstein, otherwise known as Castle Frankenstein. Whether or not Mary Shelley was influenced by this distinct castle is still a controversial topic, but it doesn’t stop the event from being thrillingly scary. We’re talking the world’s only Halloween party in a thousand-year-old castle ruin!

An interactive experience, visitors get the chance to explore this historic castle while actors will roam around looking for willing victims. For an authentic experience explore the countryside surrounding Burg Frankenstein before the event. Please note that large backpacks are not allowed on the premises. Burg Frankenstein also offers a special kids program. Burg Frankenstein is approximately 1 hour 15 minutes away from Kaiserslautern.

3.Burg

Satzvey Halloween

Located 2.5 hours north of Kaiserslautern, the Eifel castle of Burg Satzvey is an excellent place for a Halloween adventure. This is the way to do Halloween, a little in advance of Halloween (on October 26, this year). Families are welcome in the early afternoon for some “less scary” fun. But when the sun goes down at 6 p.m., the good (and more scary) times begin.

Visitors are greeted by a spectral figure who haunts the lake outside the castle. It gets better inside. Mazes, monsters, jump scares, the works. Afterward, there’s an outstanding party that lasts almost until November. If you act soon enough, you might even be able to book a room in the castle.

2.MoviePark

Horror Fest

If you’re looking for an immersive experience for Halloween, then MoviePark Horror Fest is the place to be throughout October and into early November. Located north of Essen about 3.5 hours from Kaiserslautern, the typically family friendly park will be transformed into Horrorwood studios.

Expect to be besieged by monsters, zombies and other gruesome creatures as night falls over the park. The park has hosted Horror Fest for more than 20 years, visit https://www.movieparkgermany.de/ halloween for further details.

Afterwards you can take a calm nap at the local horror hostel, unless flesh-eating monsters find you first, that is. The park offers its own special accommodation for the event.

5.Samhain at the Celtic village of Steinbach am Donnersberg

On any given autumn day, the Celtic village of Steinbach makes for a fantastic day trip, especially since it is only 30 minutes from Kaiserslautern. The village does Halloween right, too, with a fantastic Samhain celebration on October 31 (from 5-11 p.m. this year).

The Samhain tradition has existed in Celtic cultures for thousands of years, and marks the entry of the darker months. In Steinbach am Donnersberg, guests will be treated to food, drink, a bonfire, a spooky Celtic tour and much more. If you’re looking for an ancient alternative to a traditional Halloween festival, this is it!

4.Halloween

at Europa Park

Europa Park is one of Germany’s best amusement parks. Located just a little more than 2 hours away from Kaiserslautern, it also boasts an amazing Halloween scene. The park has an excellent blend of both light and heavy Halloween scenes. Pumpkins and hay bales abound. So day strange masked creatures, and goblins, and vampires, and…well, you should go see for yourself.

During the Halloween Season (October into early November), the park is open from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Visit https://www.europapark.de/en/ theme-park/tickets-offers for ticket information.
