Belgian air, space commander visits Luke Air Force Base

The 56th Fighter Wing leadership team, along with the 312th Fighter Squadron, hosted Maj. Gen. Thierry Dupont, commander of the Belgium Air and Space Component, during his visit to Luke Air Force Base, Jan. 13-16.
As Belgium prepares to transition from the F-16 Fighting Falcon to the F-35A Lightning II, the nation is focused on ensuring its pilots and maintainers are fully equipped to operate and sustain the fifth-generation aircraft effectively.
“The relationship between Belgium and the United States is built on decades of trust and cooperation,” Dupont said. “As Belgium transitions to the F-35 platform, it is vital that we continue to learn from one another to maintain mission readiness and ensure global preparation.”
During his visit, Dupont toured various facilities, met with leadership, and observed training operations conducted by the 56th FW and the 944th FW. The discussions focused on enhancing interoperability, sharing best practices, and leveraging the advanced training

“The integration of allies into our training programs not only enhances their operational capabilities but also strengthens our collective ability to respond to global challenges,” said Col. Matthew Johnston, 56th Fighter Wing deputy commander. “This collaboration ensures robust deterrence and the ability to decisively respond to security threats around the globe.”
As part of the visit, Dupont observed live training missions, including joint operations scenarios involving Belgian and U.S. pilots. He also toured the 312th FS, where F-35 pilots receive state-ofthe-art instruction and engaged with Belgian personnel currently embedded at Luke AFB.
“The training environment here is unparalleled,” Dupont said. “The ability to integrate our pilots into a diverse and dynamic operational setting prepares them to excel in complex, multinational missions.”
Luke AFB continues to play a pivotal role in advancing the capabilities of allied air power, ensuring readiness and cooperation in support of global peace and security.”

If you’re sponsoring a new arrival who is assigned to the Kaiserslautern Military Community, there is a requirement to have housing-eligible service members in-process within two working days of arrival with the KMC Housing Office.
Active-duty accompanied service members are eligible to apply for on-base family housing upon reporting in. After receipt and verification of all associated documents (contact Housing Office for details), the service member’s eligibility date will be based on the date that the member signed out of the losing installation and a housing offer will be made when housing becomes available. Eligible unaccompanied personnel and those on the MFH waitlist who plan to live in the local economy must secure an available, move-in-ready home that can be occupied within 30 days of their arrival date.

435th CRSS advises expansion of Andreas Papandreou Air Base

Seven members of the 435th Contingency Response Support Squadron conducted an infrastructure assessment at Andreas Papandreou Air Base, Cyprus, Jan. 22. During the assessment, 435th CRSS Airmen provided expansion and upgrade recommendations to increase Andreas Papandreou AB capabilities to support a wider range of air assets.
The assessment began with a base tour for 435th CRSS Airmen to review operations, equipment and infrastructure. Cypriot Air Force leadership led the tour, giving the 435th CRSS team an opportunity to take a closer look at base layout and security features, stopping at various points for closer inspection.
Following the tour, the Airmen integrated with Cypriot Air Force counterparts and broke out into working groups to discuss the airfield’s specific needs in areas such as logistics, support and operations. The groups held lengthy discussions comparing operational strategies and policies to identify upgrades, aiming to strengthen Andreas Papandreou
AB and allow the Cypriot Air Force to be better equipped in the future for the unexpected.
“Events in Sudan, Lebanon, Israel, and Gaza 2023 and 2024 demonstrated the criticality of the Republic of Cyprus as a security partner in the East Mediterranean,” said U.S. Army COL. Kenneth “K.C.” Evans, senior defense official defense attache at the U.S. Embassy in Nicosia.
Andreas Papandreou AB provides support to military allies, humanitarian relief operations and noncombatant evacuation operations. By increasing base capacity to support more aircraft and cargo, allies and partners could flow operations more seamlessly through the region.
“Expansion of Paphos will enhance U.S. and partner intermediate staging capacity for aircraft while increasing efficiency, security, and safety for air operations,” said Evans. “This in turn will better position the U.S. to respond to regional crises.”

The team also met with Mr. Vasilis Palmas, the Minister of Defence of the Republic of Cyprus, who expressed gratitude for the 435th CRSS’s efforts and assistance to the Republic of Cyprus.

Future visits, meetings and correspondence are planned moving forward to support the expansion of Andreas Papandreou AB. The

Eleven is the magic number when it comes to Karneval, also known as Fasching or Fastnacht.

The eleventh day of the eleventh month, the eleventh hour and eleventh minute of the year mark the beginning of the “fifth season” as Germans and fans of the colorful and crazy festivities tend to say.
You may ask yourself, what is this crazy season all about when grown people walk around in outrageous costumes, singing silly nonsense songs and living it up?
What are the origins and history of the season?
Karneval in Germany was noted as early as the 13th century and became very popular to allow commoners to mock the monarchy and politicians without fear of retribution, but then really took off in the 19th and 20th centuries. Therefore, many “official” Karneval costumes copy some of those old uniforms and dresses.

The historical origin of Karneval is rather obscure. It may have its roots in a primitive festival honoring the beginning of the new year and rebirth of nature. It could just as well be linked to the beginnings of carnival in Italy, where the city of Venice is famed for its celebrations when wealthy and less fortunate wore elaborate masks and mingled during the season, otherwise unheard of.

Generally speaking, the season is more popular in Catholic dominated areas such as in southern Germany, the southwest and west areas along the Dutch and Belgian borders. Fasching is always celebrated just before the fasting season of Lent, which is when many people forsake food as a sacrifice for religious reasons.

Therefore, Fasching is the time to indulge, celebrate, and embrace all that is good before things are prohibited during Lent.
Cities such as Cologne, Düsseldorf and Mainz have elaborate parades with bands, dance groups and handmade floats on Rose Monday. In BadenWürttemberg there is a special type of Karneval called “Fasnet” where participants will wear spooky and very creepy looking masks and dress up as witches pounding on drums, traditionally intended to scare off any winter spirits and bring about spring.
The highlights of the season:
This year Thursday Feb. 27, known as “Altweiberfasching” (old wives’ carnival) is when women take over power in the city halls and celebrate lively parties in the evening, and cut ties.
The following weekend goes into full swing when dances and other social events take place, always starting eleven minutes after the hour, while on Rosenmontag (Rose Monday) there are parades around the country.
Although it is not considered a public holiday, many Fasching lovers take off from work and dive into the festivities. In some regions, smaller shops or offices may be closed for the day.
Faschingsdienstag , also known as Shrove Tuesday, is another day of celebration, and a spectacular event known as Mardi Gras in New Orleans.
The largest parade in the region takes place in RamsteinMiesenbach, this year on March 4, starting at 2 p.m., often with Kaiserslautern Military Community group engagement
along with local German and French participants. Also watch for social media posts regarding road blocks and detours that afternoon.
The parade draws up to 30,000 spectators, so make sure to get into a colorful costume and join the fun! If you would like to participate as a walking or dancing group, please see Unterwegs on Page 19 for sign-up details.
The concept of Karneval has spread throughout the world with Samba competitions in Brazil, the longest carnival season in Uruguay and colorful festivities in the Caribbean.
This year, Aschermittwoch (Ash Wednesday) is March 5, the beginning of Lent and a halt for all fun. A great time to slim down and start working on your swimming and sunbathing figure for summer!

USAG Rheinland-Pfalz host nation advisor celebrates 40 years of dedication to military community

U.S. Army Garrison RheinlandPfalz hosted its quarterly employee awards and recognition ceremony at the Kazabra Club on Pulaski Barracks, Jan. 24.
The event served as a celebration of the garrison’s employees who have committed themselves to a life of service, providing an opportunity for leadership to honor and recognize the individuals who have gone above and beyond in their roles.
Among the many awardees, Petra Lessoing, the garrison’s host nation advisor for public affairs, marked 40 years of federal service.
Born and raised in Kaiserslautern, Lessoing has dedicated her career to cultivating a close partnership between the U.S. military in the Kaiserslautern and Baumholder area and the local German community.
After completing the Abitur, the highest German school certificate, she attended the Inlingua Language School for Foreign Correspondents and began her
professional journey as a linguist. In 1984, she began working for the U.S. Air Force, working in Patient Affairs for the Command Surgeon’s Office at Ramstein Air Base. Two years later, she transitioned to the Military Working Dog Agency in Kaiserslautern as an executive assistant and translator.
Lessoing joined the 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs Office in 1994, where she served as a Public Affairs Specialist and Lifestyles Editor. Through her work with the Kaiserslautern American newspa-
per, she helped the military community connect with German culture by educating them on German traditions, events and local laws.
Lessoing has been serving as the Host Nation Advisor for U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz since March 2018, providing guidance on community relations and media interactions. She also advises leadership on key issues affecting the German-American community, develops communication strategies for ongoing initiatives and accompanies the gar-
rison commander to host nation events.
Even after four decades of selfless service, Lessoing remains passionate about supporting the community.
“It has been an honor to serve the U.S. military community for the past 40 years,” said Lessoing. “Helping service members and their families understand and connect with Germany has been incredibly rewarding. The partnership between our communities is special, and I’m grateful to be a part of it.”

Early vehicle registration renewals can help relieve summer surge

To help reduce the heavy customer traffic traditionally associated with vehicle registration during the peak PCS season, those needing to re-register their U.S. Army in Europe and Africa-plated vehicles can do so almost three months prior to their current registration expiration.
The early mailings will allow those with tags expiring in May/ June/July to re-register as early as February/March/April, respectively, according to officials with a joint USAREUR-AF, Air Force and Installation Management Command-Europe operational planning team seeking to improve the registration process.
“It’s important that we make improvements to the vehicle registration process by this summer,” said Tommy Mize, IMCOM-E Director. “This is a customer-service program that impacts quality of life, so our IMCOM-E team is working hard with our USAREURAF partners and the Air Force to streamline operations where we can.”
Mize emphasized the importance of early registration in the spring for those who would normally wait until a summer expiration date as a key factor to lessen the high PCS season demand that created bottlenecks last year.
Renewal notifications were typically mailed out 75 days in advance of expiration, but mailers will go out earlier this year, approximately 90 days prior to a registration expiring, to allow more time for those needing to re-new to plan ahead and make any necessary appointments.
The change is minor but can make a big difference to help alleviate the delays that occurred last year with long wait times, when inbound personnel needing initial vehicle inspections and registrations were adding to the customer base of those in their re-registration window, according to motor vehicle registry officials.
“Renewing as early as possible will be a big help in reducing the queues during the summer months,” added Vic Baez-An, USAREUR-AF Registry of Motor Vehicles Operations Manager at Sembach Kaserne.
Unfortunately, registry data shows that only 10 percent of re-
registrations have occurred during the 45-75 day window previously, and 55 percent of customers wait to within 15 days of the registration being due.
“If we can get that 10 percent up to 90 percent or higher, it will make a huge difference this summer in reducing the number of people needing those services,” said Baez-An. “We really need current customers to ‘help us help you’ by renewing as early as possible to avoid that last-minute influx of re-registrations overlapping with newcomer registrations.
Despite the planned early notification mailings, Baez-An also noted that almost half are returned
as undeliverable due to mailing addresses not being updated –“even if someone doesn’t receive the courtesy renewal, they can still go and get it done though,” he added.
Early renewal does not change the one- or two-year expiration date, registry officials noted, and could also allow more time to fix any discrepancies if a vehicle fails to pass the required inspection.
The OPT is looking to help reduce the summer workload by increasing the number of inspectors and clerks to meet the anticipated demand surge and by establishing a safety-kit kiosk at inspection facilities. The kiosks would
reduce people being turned away for not having items such as first aid kits, warning triangles or safety vests, allowing them to purchase those on site — eliminating second visits.
“We understand we have to make significant improvements to the process, and we are looking at innovative ways to do that,” said Col. Chris Danbeck, IMCOM-E deputy director and OPT lead for the cross-functional working group.
“Our goal is to ensure a smooth, low-stress experience for our military and civilian workforce as they go through this process, whether it be a renewal or a first-time registration.”

More and more residues of medicinal products, even dangerous substances, are being detected in surface waters. This is an alarming fact and we want to take the opportunity to provide information on the subject.
How do pharmaceutical residues get into our waters?
Medicines are not fully absorbed by the body. In part they are chemically unchanged when excreted. Ointments are rinsed off the skin when washing. In this way, via municipal sewage large amounts of pharmaceutical degradation products are emitted into soil and water with human and animal excretions. Carelessness and incorrect disposal of drugs down the drain or toilet increase the concentration of this chemical cocktail in our wastewater. As sew -
age plants are not yet able to absorb, convert or bind these substances diffused in the wastewater, the amount of pharmaceutical residues in streams, rivers and lakes is increasing constantly. To a certain extent, they can even be found in drinking water. This is how drug residues potentially affect our health and have a very negative impact on microorganisms and fish. If at all, it is very difficult to biologically degrade medicinal products. Once they have entered the water cycle, they are hard to remove. This makes it even more important that we avoid or at least reduce the release of medicinal products in the environment as much as possible.
In Kaiserslautern County, non-recyclable waste is incinerated at very high temperatures. Therefore, you are allowed to dispose of medicines in your container for non-recyclable waste (black can).
How to safely dispose of medicines
• Never flush unused medicine down the drain or toilet!
• Please wrap it into a newspaper or paper bag, put it into a waste bag, tie up the bag and throw it into the black can. The reason for this procedure is that the can might topple before it is emptied or that children look into it and mistake pills for sweets.
• If the package insert contains a specific note (e.g. for cytostatic agents in cancer drugs), do not dispose of these drugs in the black can but take them to the hazardous waste truck (Umweltmobil) or the ZAK recycling center. By doing so, you can prevent unauthorized access by third persons.
• Paper boxes and inserts go in the paper can. It is not required to remove pills from their direct packaging (the socalled blister pack). You can discard the entire blister pack in the can for
non-recyclable waste.
• When disposing of objects with points or sharp edges (glass ampoules, syringes, etc.) you should use a non-penetrable box with a screw cap and put the box in the black can.
• If you are unsure whether a certain medicine can be considered nonrecyclable waste, you always have the option to take it to the ZAK recycling center or the hazardous waste truck. While pharmacies are not obliged to take back unused or expired drugs, some offer this customer service on a voluntary basis.
Avoid drug residues
It is vital to act responsibly when handling medicinal products. Please check your supplies for medicines that are still usable before buying new products. In this way, you can avoid medical waste before it occurs.

GOLD FEVER IN TRIER

In 196 A.D.: In the turmoil of the civil war under Emperor Septimius Severus, an unknown person hid an immense sum of money in the form of around 2,650 Roman gold coins in a cellar in Trier - he was no longer able to retrieve it. The treasure remained in the earth until September 1993. After 1,800 years, the treasure was rediscovered during excavation work — a sensation. Gold fever broke out in Trier, and the coins ended up in the Rheinisches Landesmuseum. On October 8, 2019: Two burglars entered the museum to steal the coin treasure of 18.5 kg of pure gold. The police thwarted the robbery attempt - the perpetrators fled without taking anything but caused a lot of damage. The coin cabinet was destroyed and had to be closed for the public. Since September 2022 the coin exhibit has been open again and can be visited. In addition to the coin exhibit, there are several other

2) Pick up a bottle of German wine
as in the U.S. — namely, it’s a day to show how much you love your loved ones! Fortunately, you are living in a country that can help you do romance right. Here are seven great tips for celebrating Valentine’s Day while you’re living in Germany!
1) Visit your local florist
Stock up on gorgeous flowers for your sweet or treat yourself! Flowers in Germany are incredibly fresh and well priced, especially compared to most stateside prices. If you’d rather have them delivered, try fleurop.de, who work with local florists and offer sameday delivery.
Head to your local grocery or beverage shop and pick up some German wine (or beer, if that’s what your sweetheart prefers) to celebrate Valentine’s Day. Remember: Germany has some of the best wine-growing regions in the world. And, again, the prices will floor you compared to those in the U.S. Plus, sharing a good wine is the perfect way to celebrate Valentine’s Day in European style! Pro tip: pair this with tip six (below) and plan a trip to the vineyard your wine is from.
3) Don’t wait until the last minute to make a reservation
Restaurants can get pretty
packed during special events like Valentine’s Day, so call or stop by to make a reservation for your special night. 4) Take a romantic walk It’s not for nothing that Germany has the Romantic Road and a plethora of Romantic Walks.
