Pastoral Letter Jesus said to her, ‘I am the resurrection and the life. The one who believes in me will live, even though they die; and whoever lives by believing in me will never die. Do you believe this?’ (John 11:25-26) To put this verse in context, Jesus had been summoned to visit his friend Lazarus because he was ill. By the time Jesus had made it to the Village of Bethany, Lazarus was dead. On speaking to his sisters, Martha and Mary, who were distraught with grief at the loss of their brother, Jesus comforts them with the verse above. Martha’s response was this, ‘Yes Lord, I believe that you are Christ, the Son of God, who was to come into the world.’

At Easter we celebrate with Christians around the world the amazing fact that this ‘carpenter from Nazareth’ transformed the world through his three years of teaching and healing. He showed people, in signs and wonders, that God was on their side.

Even when the Jewish leaders, whose vested interests opposed Jesus’ life-changing message, had him arrested and condemned to death, they believed that they had won.

However it was Jesus Himself who was to die for them, and for us today, who would create the greatest event of world history, confounding even His closest friends.

Good Friday is ‘good’ in that we can look forward to God’s power transforming the death of Jesus on the cross, into the resurrection of Jesus from the tomb on that first Easter morning. This time another of Jesus’ friends, distraught with having watched 5 the crucifixion, comes to anoint His body only to find that the grave is open and there is no body there. When she turns and asks a man who she believes to be the gardener, his response is to use her name, ‘Mary!’ At which moment she knows it’s Jesus and goes to tell those scared and frightened followers who expect to be next on the gallows, “I have seen the Lord” (John 20:18).

Mary’s exclamation echoes around the universe from that first Easter morning. No longer has death got its hold over the children God created but, through Jesus’ death and resurrection, healing and forgiveness is available to us here and now and the promise of life after death for all those who follow Him.

Annual Parochial Church Meeting (APCM) Following our 10.30am Family Communion Service we will be holding our APCM. This is the meeting at which we review the past year and look forward to the year ahead. We will elect our Church Wardens and members of the Parochial Church Council (PCC) and receive reports from teams and various affiliated groups. Even amidst the business it is good to see the Lord is working His purposes out.

Palm Sunday 8am Holy Communion 10.30am Time For God Service including banner and flag making for our procession, celebrating the arrival of Jesus in Jerusalem on that first Palm Sunday. We will walk out of the Church, down to the pond, along to Glebe way and up the Church path followed by refreshments back in Church.

6pm Songs of Praise Come and join us, as we worship, with songs and hymns from down the ages to the present day to celebrate Palm Sunday.

Prayer Chain of Prayer Worried about a loved one, a friend or yourself and would like prayers to be said by a chain of people? Contact Wendy 700295 or Gillian 700157 and they will start the chain by contacting the person next to them on the list and so it goes all the way round. A copy of the chain is on the notice board at the back of church.

Prayer is a powerful and important part of life and one should never under estimate its effect. You don't need to give any details of the problem just ask for prayers to be said and it will happen. Please note that it will be treated with total confidentiality.

Prayers are offered for parishioners who are in special need, especially the sick and frail. Please advise either of the churchwardens of any persons or situations you would like remembered in this way.

GET JUMBLED UP FOR YOUR SCHOOL! We are delighted to be holding our first ‘Good Old Fashioned Jumble Sale’ on Saturday 1st April. Featuring our very own ‘Vintage Pop Up Tea Room’ we hope that the village will support the event even if it’s just popping in for a cup of tea and a slice of cake! Wisborough Green Primary School News Land Ahoy! We started this half term with an invasion of pirates and mermaids. They sailed the Wisborough Seas, drew treasure maps and helped us find the gold! We were lucky they were friendly so enjoyed writing letters to them everyday!

Keeping the children safe online is something we are having to spend an increasing amount of time on in school. Technology is more readily available to children and they are able to access the World Wide Web with ease. We were visited by the NSPCC and PC Phillips to help us develop skills to keep safe, especially online. We were very proud to hear that Henry won the JSPC prize for the best 'Internet Safety Poster'. His poster was chosen out of 2850 entries across Surrey, Sussex and Hampshire. He won a ÂŁ500 voucher for the school and a digital camera. Well done Henry!

Everyone enjoyed World Book Day, wearing an accessory representing their favourite book character. It was fun guessing who everyone was, by the clues they brought in.

Everyday is book day for us at WGPS so we took the opportunity to share our love of 11 books with families and friends. Thank you to everyone who shared their love of books with us.

Ten lucky children were chosen to take part in a locality sporting event with a difference. They enjoyed archery, wheelchair basketball and skateboarding - to name a few. They loved their morning and came back full of inspiration. We are now looking forward to welcoming a paralympian later in the term. It is not just about learning a new sport though, we continue to learn about the importance of persevering when things are difficult and not giving up.

We were proud to send our first placed team to the regional Indoor Athletics Finals.

They were up against some tough competition and came 3rd overall. In true Wisborough style, they supported each other, rose to the challenge and had lots of fun.

Well done to all of our winners!

It seems hard to believe spring is here and summer is around the corner. We are looking forward to our 'Wild Wisborough' topic next term and would like to work with YOU - our local community. If you think you can support us with our topic, then we would love to hear from you. We will be learning about: local history, growing, cooking, healthy minds and business and enterprise. Nature Notes Greetings to all! I hope the Festive Season was jolly, and that you’re now ready to enjoy the summer wildlife. By the time you read this, spring flowers should be in full bloom and the trees turning green again. Already the delicate wild daffodils are coming through the crowded wild garlic leaves in the woods, and bluebells are on the way up too. The other day, when we went down, a pair of muntjac deer jumped up and away. I know perfectly well they’ll be back to nip off any rosebuds from my poor old bush in the drive, but I’m resigned to that now, and it’s lovely to see them curled up in the grass, sunning themselves.

Recently a raven honoured us with a brief visit. I heard this harsh call as I walked in the fields, and sure enough, there it was perched at the top of a tree. It continued to call at regular intervals, until I got too close for comfort. Its head turned and, reluctantly it seemed, it flapped away. Such a distinctive croaking cry always makes me think of the Scottish Play – and my attempt at Lady M! (I’m still superstitious, I’m afraid!) The way he looked at me, perhaps he’d heard I wasn’t very good!

A few days later a pair of red kites appeared - another treat. The crows soon gathered to pester. Kites are so agile and acrobatic they easily evaded them, and seemed remarkably unconcerned. Unlike the poor old buzzards, who are always being harassed. But we hope they may get a bit of peace this year. We’ve heard there’s one in fields south of the 272. Maybe it’s one of the youngsters that managed to grow up here in spite of their tormentors? That’s a nice thought! Speaking of tormentors, I’m very sad to report that the peregrine nest site at the quarry in Bedham has been 13 knocked down - as was threatened. If it’s illegal to disturb them during breeding, is it ok to destroy their nest? They’d been using it for several years – seems unfair to me.

Large numbers of toads arrived in the big pond up at Ingrams, and left again after much splashing and cavorting. Frogs have been doing the same, and apparently under one bridge in Midhurst the water has been flying in all directions! Let’s hope for bumper amphibian numbers this year. On my late-night dog walks I’ve rescued several toads, and one frog, all different sizes. So, fingers crossed they flourish.

Lastly – a small domestic drama the other day. A male blackbird settled into the ground -based birdbath. Water was splashing everywhere as he ruffled and preened. A female (his mate?) came down as if to join, and he promptly chased her off. He continued his bath – she approached again – and again – and again. Every time he chased her off, until she finally gave up and flew away. He returned to the water, with a distinctly victorious strut, for a further prolonged dip. (No comment!) !

The Parishes Wildlife Group The Parishes Wildlife Group has received funding from both the WG Fete Committee and SDNP sustainability grant for which we are most grateful. We intend to hold events in April, June, August and September so watch out for announcements and for posters round Kirdford and Wisborough Green villages and many thanks to Plaistow residents who have sent us notes about the wildlife they see regularly.

What to do if you find a swarm of honey bees.

Swarming is a natural instinct for bees and all colonies, if left to their own devices, will eventually swarm. This is part of their means of reproduction; if they didn’t there would be no bees.

The swarm has to find a new home but in the meantime it will find a branch, fence or a gate to hang off. Worker bees scout around until they find a suitable tree, chimney or roof space and then return to the swarm to show them the way to their new home.

This can take a few minutes or a couple of days.

Prior to leaving the nest they will fill up with honey to last them on their journey, so they need to find somewhere before they get hungry. Swarms of bees are not normally aggressive but best not approached, sprayed with water or have things thrown at them.

The best course of action is to call a local beekeeper that can re-home them safely.

There are several beekeepers in our area but the best place to check is the BBKA website www.bbka.org.uk There you can put in your post code and all the local collectors will be listed.

Annual Unlock Walk Saturday 29th April 2017 Ever y year a group of Parishioners from Wisborough Green joins this annual walk visiting a variety of churches in London. The aim of the walk is to raise money for Unlock’s work in deprived urban areas across the UK and to raise awareness of the issues that Unlock exists to address.

This year’s walk will take place in and around Clapham & Battersea on Saturday 29th April between 9am and 5pm and the 7 mile route includes Battersea Park and Clapham Common. It is a very enjoyable and rewarding day out and, although 7 miles may sound daunting, the walk is conducted at a relatively leisurely pace and we usually find a pleasant park or bit of green to have a picnic en-route.

You can get involved by either joining us on the walk or by sponsoring those walking (or both!). If you can join us do let Judy know on 01403 700700.

Maundy Thursday Passover Meal Invitation 13th April 7pm The roots of the Communion Service can be traced back to the yearly celebration of the Passover, the festival of unleavened bread.

This is when the Jews remember their exodus out of slavery in Egypt, where the Spirit of God ‘passed over’ the Hebrews, giving them the opportunity to flee their captivity (Exodus Chapter 12).

We shall be providing a light supper, which has all the ingredients of Passover, for folk to taste as we re-enact the events of Jesus’ last supper with his friends.

Wisborough Green Sideshows Society - Ceases Operation The Sideshows Society has been in existence for nearly 70 years and in that time we have provided the senior citizens of the village the opportunity of enjoying an amazing dinner party and social occasion. The society is managed by a small team, some of whom have served for over 40 years.

At the recent Sideshows AGM the existing committee all decided it was time to hand over the reins to new young blood and resigned on mass. Despite our best efforts we were not able to replace the committee, therefore it is with regret I have to inform you that the Wisborough Green Sideshows Society has now ceased operation.

May I take this opportunity of thanking the committee and all those wonderful people who have helped us over the years in making the dinner party such an amazing success and, of course, to all our guests.

St Peter ad Vincula Church Alterations and Improvements After nearly 15 years of careful planning and with the benefit of funds already raised and the legacy left by Laurence and Pat Knight we are at last able to implement the consented proposals for the planned alterations to the church.

In broad terms, the alterations include the following:

 Improvement to the steps leading into the church building in the north porch;  Installation of an additional set of glass doors inside the main entrance door;  Installation of a toilet in the existing vestry together with storage facilities and the raising of the existing ceiling height; Removal of the organ for repairs and a much needed overhaul;

  Installation of two new vestries in the north and south aisles;  Replacement of the existing internal south door with a glass door;  The introduction of an all singing and dancing Servery at the back of the

church to improve the facilities for ‘Xpresso’ and the general catering facilities in the church; and  Installation of new kitchen facilities in the south porch together with a new south door.

At the time of writing, we are about to appoint a contractor to take on the building works. The highlight of the works will be the two new Vestries which will be created by the use of coloured glass and oak panels. We have been very fortunate in being able to appoint Mel Howse, a very successful and creative glass artist, to prepare the engraved glass screens, which will incorporate etched designs and text that will extend across the adjoining oak panels which are to be prepared and carved by Peter West from Wests in East Dean.

The Vestries will add a lasting improvement to the church to a standard in keeping with the quality of the workmanship which already exists in our beautiful building. The design will make a clear 21st century statement which will sit in harmony with all that has gone before.

The works are scheduled to start with the removal of the organ on 3rd April and the main works starting in May/June. A temporary organ is being installed and the church will remain in use during the whole period of the works, although it may be necessary to move ‘Xpresso’ for some of the weeks to an alternative venue.

Wisborough Green As promised last month, the Project Team has looked closely at all the feedback received from the community and from Chichester DC. The following provides a summary of the team’s views: Chichester DC The pre-application meeting with CDC Planning and Heritage officers was mostly encouraging. A few concerns were raised which we have referred back to our architect. Although not binding on any formal decision, we were encouraged by the general tone of the discussion.

Solar Panels We have previously raised this possibility with Chichester DC who rejected the idea as the Hall is Grade II listed. However we will be looking closely at other 'green' options.

Location of Kitchen The suggestion that the kitchen is re-located where there is more natural light available at ground level has been referred back to our architect who will look again at the internal layout at the east end where the single storey extension is planned.

The Committee Room is not seen as a suitable alternative location for the kitchen.

Disabled Access to Committee Room Two things are already planned. First the current Emergency Exit door in the 20 Committee Room will be made into a lockable Entrance/Exit door so that access can be gained from the church path. Secondly, there will be an internal ramp up from the Hall level to the Committee Room level.

Disabled Access to upper floor The proposed staircase meets all necessary standards for access by ambulant disabled (people with walking difficulties) with low risers and wide steps. We have looked closely with our professional advisers at how we might find sufficient space for a wheelchair lift, but we are unable to accommodate this.

Parking The Team is aiming to achieve a neutral position with regard to the number of parking spaces at the Hall via a re-design of the space available in the car park, i.e. maintaining the same number of parking spaces as at present. Clearly though, in the interests of health and safety, there will be restrictions on parking at the hall while any works are being undertaken.

Noise and Traffic Earlier advice from the Parish Council was that the village hall is likely to be located at its present site for the foreseeable future as it is central, convenient and easily

The Hall buildings are substantially the same as they have been for the last 40 years with only minor works having been carried out. Put simply, the Hall is not fit for purpose in today’s society and does not meet many of the regulations in respect of disabled access, hygiene and energy efficiency. Modernisation is therefore the way forward to create a facility that is fit for purpose today and for the future.

Essentially, we are proposing a major refurbishment and re-configuration informed by the feedback from our hirers and village residents, via the Neighbourhood Plan surveys and consultations, aimed at meeting current and anticipated future needs. We are not, in effect, proposing to increase the lettable space and do not anticipate a significant increase in use so issues of noise and traffic/parking will not be worsened. The Hall Committee will continue to control use of the Hall. Any additional users will be strictly vetted.

The Hall Committee remains committed to the principle that the Hall is there for the benefit of our community. Hire by persons/ groups beyond our parish boundaries are already strictly controlled.

We also have noise limiting technology installed in the main Hall.

Finance & Funding I think it may be helpful for people to understand a little more about financing and funding for the Hall. The Village Hall is a Charitable Trust with its own monies, derived mainly from lettings income and the monthly draw club. The Trust is supervised by 8 Trustees, and managed through a Hall Committee. It is completely independent of the Parish Council, although the Parish Council has an interest in the Hall as its landlord. The Parish Council also supports the Hall in the same way as it does many other local groups and facilities within the community. The Trust Deed requires the monies held by the Hall Trustees/Committee to be spent on the Hall for the benefit of the community. Money cannot be spent outside the Trust.

Funding for the modernisation will come principally from the generous bequest made to the Trust by Laurence Knight, together with funds that the Hall Committee has been setting aside over the years to carry out any capital projects that may be required. The funds that we hold place us in a strong position to “cash match” when we apply for various grants to top up the funds. In order to complete the modernisation, some local fundraising may be necessary in order to equip the Hall with more modern décor, furniture, kitchen appliances and other internal fixtures and fittings.

Next Steps The Project Team will meet again once our architect has updated the plans. We shall then begin to put together all the supporting material required to make a formal planning application to Chichester DC. I shall report further progress as and when needed.

St Peter's Mission Team St Peter’s has convened a new ‘Mission Team’ to support and pray for special projects. It is easy to be overwhelmed by the sadness and cruelty we see in our beautiful world. However we can all make a difference where we are. We are so blessed to live in our village with its active community, school and Church.

We are focussing on three particular projects, but this may be extended in the future.

1. We help fund projects across the Diocese for Family Support Work (FSW).

This has been done for many years and it is wonderful to hear how vulnerable families continue to be helped throughout Sussex.

We are also in contact with and given to refugees, who are mostly Syrian and now in Greece. Many thousands have been left abandoned there since barriers went up in Europe. We are supporting a particular charity 'Aegean Solidarity' which is making a difference with projects in Athens and Leros.

Our overseas mission partner is Rachel and her husband Eric Mande and their children, who are working with Youth with a Mission (YWAM) in Uganda.

Expenditure update July 2016 – February 2017  Approximately £7570 has been sent to Leros and has been spent on, but is not limited to: Pikpa, Villa Artemis, Hygiene kit program, Education, Food provisions, Toiletries, Pushchairs.  Approximately £1370 has been spent on the Jasmine School program which has included but is not limited to: Books, Stationery, Provisions of Food and Drink.  Approximately £2000 has been spent on misc projects not limited to: Heater for refugee accommodation (Rhodes), Sponsorship of a vulnerable family into private accommodation, and food stipends (Athens), Training kit for HOPE refugee football team (Athens), Supplies for Art Without Borders (Nea Kavala).

What’s coming up in addition to the projects we are currently supporting?  We are currently raising money to pay for a bespoke, special chair for an Afghan refugee toddler with severe cerebral palsy in Athens.  We are working with Oasis, a solidarity group in Rhodes to help fund provisions for food for refugees in their care.  We are also working with and will be contributing toward an initiative in Athens called the Orange House. This project offers accommodation for up to 25 vulnerable women refugees and their children, as well as an invaluable drop in centre with numerous facilities for refugees.  We will be purchasing a 2nd hand interactive projector for the education centre at The Hub refugee project run by ECHO100Plus in Leros.

Time for God Service Sunday 12 Mar 2017 We had fun giving thanks for water on 2 nd Sunday of March in St Peter’s morning service. There were ducks to catch; slushy squash to make with ice, grinding it to snow and marbling with oil paints over water which created beautiful patterns on the paper. Delicious gingerbread John the Baptists were given hair, a beard and tunic with the icing and chocolate sprinkles before they were eaten! We learnt that Jesus gives us living water in John Chapter 4, bringing us life in all its fullness.

Next Time For God Service is at 10.30am on Sunday 9th April, which is Palm Sunday. We will be having activities around this theme, when Jesus rode into Jerusalem on a donkey. Banners and palms will be made and we will go out of the church, past the duck pond and back up Glebe Way and the Church path to celebrate this tradition of Palm Sunday. We hope to see you there!

Recipe of the Month

Simnel share ’n’ tear buns These buns take a bit of time and effort, but are well worth it and so much nicer than bought hot cross buns. Children always enjoy cooking and my grandchildren love to help and watch the way yeast doughs grows. If you don't like marzipan just leave out the almond extract and grated marzipan, though it's fun to add the apostle balls.

Ingredients         

300g strong white bread flour 140g plain flour, plus extra for dusting 50g golden caster sugar 7g sachet fast-action dried yeast zest 1 lemon 200ml warm milk 2 tsp almond extract 1 large egg oil, for greasing bowl/proving

For the filling  50g butter, at room temperature 34  100g light soft brown sugar  2 tsp mixed spice  1 tbsp lemon juice  50g mixed peel  50g currants  50g marzipan, coarsely grated, plus 50g/2oz extra for the ‘Apostle’ balls

To finish  85g apricot jam  85g icing sugar, sifted  2 tbsp toasted flaked almonds

Method 1. Mix the flours, sugar, yeast, zest and 1 tsp salt in a big bowl. In a separate bowl, whisk together the milk, almond extract and egg, then stir into the dry ingredients with a cutlery knife. Leave to rest for 10 mins.

2. Knead the dough for 10 mins on a lightly floured surface until smooth and no longer sticky, then put in an oiled bowl, cover with oiled cling film and leave to rise somewhere warm-ish for at least 1 hr until doubled in size.

3. Line the base of a 25 x 35cm tin, or 30cm square, with baking parchment. Mix the first 4 filling ingredients to a smooth paste, then stir in the dried fruit and 50g marzipan.

4. Roll out the dough to a rectangle about 35 x 25cm. Crumble over the filling and press into the dough. Roll up tightly from one long side and, using a floured knife, cut into 12 even pieces. Put these into the tin, spiral-side up, leaving 0.5cm space between them. Cover with oiled cling film and leave to rise for 30-45 mins until nearly doubled in size. Heat oven to 200C/180C fan/gas 6.

5. Bake the buns for 25-30 mins. If they are browning too quickly after 15 mins, cover loosely with baking parchment. Take the buns out of the oven and, while warm, melt the jam and brush all over the top. Leave to cool in the tin. Once cool, mix the icing sugar with a little water to a runny consistency and drizzle over. With the remaining marzipan, make 11 balls to represent the Apostles – without Judas – and scatter over with the almonds. Best eaten the day of baking. If making ahead or freezing, warm through in a low oven before serving to give that justbaked flavour.

Update Broadford Bridge UKOG is planning to bring in a drill to explore for oil “in spring” at Broadford Bridge, Adversane, West Sussex. However, KKWG argues that these are new plans requiring a fresh planning application because the exploration target has changed. This week KKWG wrote to the County Council Planning Dept saying plans by UK Oil & Gas to drill a well at the Wood Barn Farm site differ considerably from those which were 35 granted consent 4 years ago.

Celtique Energie, CE, the former operator of the site, wanted to explore the Triassic sandstone reservoir for gas and specified that this would involve conventional drilling i.e. the company “guaranteed that it would not be using hydraulic fracturing (fracking) on this well”. Permission with 23 conditions was given by WSCC in February 2013.

In June 2016, CE sold its Petroleum Exploration Development License, PEDL 234, to UK Oil and Gas Investments plc. A subsidiary of UKOG now wants to explore for tight oil at Broadford Bridge which requires a different technique, one which is regarded as “unconventional”. In the letter to WSCC planning Dept, KKWG Chair Dr Sutcliffe said Condition 3 (drawn up by WSCC) attached to the original planning permission requires that the development be carried out in accordance with the Environmental Statement, ES. This proposed conventional drilling to target the Sherwood Sandstone formation and made no mention of transporting or storing acid at the site. Local residents consider that this is a sufficient and significant material consideration requiring a new application to be submitted by UKOG and which would involve public consultation.

Keep Billingshurst Frack Free, KBFF group plans to hold a series of events. They meet next to the Blacksmiths Arms on the corner of Adversane Lane on Saturday afternoons from 2-4 pm to draw attention to the site. Look out for posters and local press covering any new developments, protests and they intend to hold a public meeting next month at Billingshurst Community Centre, hosted by Sue Jameson, with a panel of experts answering questions on the development of oil and gas in the area Jill Sutcliffe, Chair KKWG

Wisborough Green History - MY LIFE DURI Gerald Andrews continues with his wartime memories after describing the Home Guard and the Battle of Britain last month .

What a year 1942 was for the Canadian soldier. We will start with the soldiers descending on Wisborough Green, so to speak. There were hundreds of them, they completely altered the way of life in the village. The army commandeered all the large buildings and houses in the area. In Wisborough they took over the vicarage and a couple of hundred yards further up the road towards Billingshurst, they took possession of a private school called Eardenstow. The first of these has been demolished.

Howfold Fruit Farms, which Mr. Skinner managed, also played its part in the war. The Canadian army commandeered a barn and a big machine store, which they used for their Motor Transport workshops.

A large contingent of Canadian soldiers were housed under canvas in Bittles Copse, which borders the B2133 about a mile north of the Bat and Ball. In the early hours of the morning you would hear them on patrol, occasionally I would hear bagpipes getting louder as the soldiers marched up Durbans Road and when they got near to number 6 Upfield Villas, I would get out of bed and rush to the window and watch them march by.

The evenings were for relaxation and Wisborough Green would turn Khaki especially outside of the Cricketers and the Three Crowns. I understand the brewery had difficulty 36 in supply and demand and the pubs did not open every night.

In May 1942 the Canadians began construction on an airfield about four miles north of Wisborough Green in a little village called Dunsfold that I will mention later..

The army made their Headquarters at Hawkhurst Court which is approximately three miles west of Wisborough just off the A272. Hawkhurst was also a boarding school, before the war. I hope you do not mind but I would like to write a few words on Hawkhurst Court as it played a big part in my life.

Lord and Lady Desart came to England in 1922 and bought Hawkhurst Court, after their mansion “Desart Court” in Southern Ireland was burnt down, by the IRA. Mrs Skinner (nee Lomax) was in charge of “Desart Court” at that time. She is mentioned in a book “:End of Desart” for her loyalty and courage on the night it was destroyed. Lord and Lady Desart are buried in Kirdford church yard. During the war we would visit the grave frequently and put flowers on it.

ING THE WAR - GERALD ANDREWS (Part 2) On August 19th 1942, the Canadians left our shores for a raid on Dieppe.

The American soldiers came to England in late 1942 but I am not sure when they came to Wisborough Green. My first recollection of them is of their convoys passing through the village. You would always know when they were coming because their dispatch riders would be the first on the scene, riding their big Harley Davidsons. One of them would take up a position at the T junction to wave them on and the rest would carry on towards Petworth. Us boys would wait in awe to see it come round the bend by the horse pond, usually being led by a jeep flying a flag but not the stars and stripes. The convoys would consist of troop carriers, perhaps a tank carrier and some odd shaped lorries, and even a motor vehicle shaped like a boat but with wheels, known as a DUK. If you lived in Wisborough at this time you would have seen plenty of activity in the sky as Dunsfold was handed over to the Royal Canadian Air Force on the 16 th October 1942. Between 1942 and 1945 a variety of aircraft operated from there, Typhoons, Mustangs, Mosquitoes, Spitfires and B25 Mitchell bombers (see photo) to name just a few. An older friend of mine by the name of Les Nicholls, would ride our bikes to Dunsfold, then walk across to a copse and peer through the trees and watch the planes take off and land. I have a vivid picture in my mind of a Saturday while helping Mrs Ted Skinner on her greengrocery round up Bedham, and hearing this plane flying very low, I looked up and saw this Mitchell bomber with another one tucked in behind it. Half of its tail had been shot off. We went to Dunsfold on the Sunday but could not see any trace of it.

Our thanks to Kate Vernalls for organising the visit to the Chichester Planetarium last month – a full bus, a good lunch and very interesting afternoon with the stars. Our visit this month is to the Tangmere Museum with a stop for coffee on the way at the new Goodwood Flying School Café and then lunch in the NAAFI at the Museum before a guided tour in the afternoon. We will also be taking the minibus to the theatre again on Saturday 29th April. See last month’s Ad Vincula for details.

Provided we have sufficient numbers we plan to visit the Bluebell Railway on Wednesday, 3rd May. The cost will be £20, to include the minibus fare. We have to book our places before the end of April so please call Brenda as soon as possible if you wish to come on this trip.

Local Club and Society News Wisborough Green Spitfire Simulator Club Why not join the Spitfire Simulator Club? The prime purpose of our simulator project is to raise money for the RAF Benevolent Fund and to that end, simulator flights are normally charged for. However, with the Simulator Club, members make a small donation to the RAFBF (ÂŁ5 per year) and their name goes into a hat every month and the winner gets a flight for free. Wisborough Green History Society Wisborough Green Village History Society is a small group of people who enjoy talking about and researching the history of the village. Several of our members are life-long residents of the village, others have lived here for many years and all have interesting memories and anecdotes to relate.

Wisborough Green Short Mat Bowls Club We entertained Fittleworth in a friendly match on Wednesday 1st March with Fittleworth running out winners by one shot. Mat 1 (Jane Adsett, Shirley Bundy, David Luxford and Monica Enticknap) losing 17 - 22 and on Mat 2 (Tony Broughton, Marilyn Knight, Lorraine Berry and Pauline Shipway winning 23 - 19 giving a losing Match Result of 40 - 41.

We then travelled to Lavant for a friendly match on Saturday 4 th March with Wisborough winning by eight shots. Mat 1 (Jane Adsett, Audrey Hodgson, David Luxford and Bernard Adsett) winning 19 - 18, on Mat 2 (Tony Broughton, Gavin Jones, Monica Enticknap and Dave Herbert) winning 28 - 8 and Mat 3 (Jean Head, Linda Jones, Marilyn Knight and Lorraine Berry) losing 13 - 26 giving a winning Match Result of 60 - 52.

Next Market: Thursday 13th April 2017 Wisborough Green Village Hall 8.45am – 12.30pm Happy Birthday to us! Our March Market saw us celebrate our 15th Birthday!

We were joined by members of the Parish Council, our Vicar, Clive, committee members old and new and our wonderful sponsors. As we felt 15 years was such achievement, we treated ourselves to a large cake, which was duly cut and shared amongst everyone there. We would just like to say a huge thank you to everyone who has helped to keep the market going and growing; to all of the volunteers, customers, stall-holders and sponsors. We could not have done it without your support We had two new stallholders with us this month, Polly from Spotty Cat Crafts and Kim from Pure Chocolate Truffles. Polly brought a beautiful selection of vintage crafts and handmade bags with her, including her ingenious ‘dog-walking bags’, waterproof bags with compartments for all of those items you need to take with you when out and 45 about. Kim brought a selection of truffles, slabs of handmade chocolate (my favourite was milk chocolate and cardamom) and Easter eggs.

Easter Market - The next market will be held on Maundy Thursday, 13 th April, the day before Good Friday. We do hope you will join us to stock up on all of your Easter Goodies. Pure Chocolate Truffles will be bringing their selection of chocolate eggs, as well a small gifts, such as chocolate lolly-making kits for the children. Sussex Roses will be selling a beautiful array of cut and potted flowers for your Easter table and….we are holding a RAFFLE! As ever we will have a selection of wonderful prizes, including a Chocolate Easter Bunny, a traditional Simnel Cake, and much, much more!

Wisborough Green Horticultural Society Monday, 3rd April 2017 - 8pm Village Hall Talk on “Flower Arranging for entering into competitions”

By Angela Hyde Is there anybody who does not enjoy seeing flowers and greenery attractively put together? This should be an interesting insight into how a collection of flowers and leaves can create a pleasurable experience that lasts as long as the flowers do.

If you have even given the merest passing thought as to how you would interpret an arrangement title do find out how this talk may help you to try it out for real. It should be fun and creatively stimulating.

A lot of thought was given to the titles to make them user friendly - “Shades of green”; Twigs and Twine”; “Good enough to eat” and “Summertime” for the June Show entries.

The Spring Plant Sale is happily looming for those whose itchy green fingers are longing to get into the soil. If you are sowing, pricking out, dividing up or finding self sown duplicates where they should not be – please pot these up to share with others. If you have a spare lollipop stick or DIY plastic labels – please pop a label in for those who may have trouble in recognising the seedlings or plants.

Wakehurst is part of Kew Gardens as well as National Trust. The old house has a lovely frontage and also can be visited at most times. At the back there is the self service eatery and garden shop. The entry area has a cafe and a very smart, well stocked shop. The truly wonderful Seed Bank can be seen in a new construction that keeps out the rain. The visual displays are truly mind boggling in content and form.

You can look inside the laboratories and see the various processes for preservation of the seeds taking place and begin to appreciate the reasons for them in detail.

The Seed Bank is our contribution to future well being on this planet for our descendants. Two friends from Canada told me this year, whilst we were at Wakehurst, that they had already seen a very detailed programme about it on TV back home. They still were riveted by the whole set up and place. Truly a place to treasure.

Just give Kate a call. You do not need to be a member of The WGHS to come on this visit – so please come if you can and maybe bring a friend.

We exist to enjoy gardening at whatever level we choose as individuals and to share the ups and downs of plants in our own patches or in others’ gardens. May this Spring bring gardening enjoyment in all its forms to all of us in WG. Aija Hamilton

WI Report We had a large turnout to our 2nd March meeting when BEAT, (Billingshurst Emergency Assistance Team) came and gave us a demonstration on CPR and how to use a defibrillator. Three members came and told us about BEAT which covers a large area of West Sussex by members who voluntarily give their time and expertise, night or day.

We will shortly be having a training session for members who are interested in learning more about CPR and emergency first aid.

Our next meeting is on Thursday 6th April 2017 when we will hear a talk from Lesley Baker. She is a tree surgeon and will share with us her experiences. It is titled ‘Out on a limb’. So for any budding tree surgeons this is ‘must go to’ meeting!

Gladiolus into beds, borders and containers.

Divide Hostas before they come into leaf. Pot them up and bring them along to the May plant sale.

Divide primroses after they have flowered.

Deadhead daffodils and tulips as the flowers finish but leave the foliage intact allowing it to die back naturally.

Plant your chitted potatoes outside in the ground or in potato grow bags, but remember to keep well covered if there is a chance of frost.

Protect your fruit blossom from late frosts by covering them with fleece on cold nights.

Plant out strawberry beds, making sure you enrich the soil first with plenty of well-rotted manure. Place cloches over your strawberry plants for earlier crops.

Keep an eye on your seedlings - as soon as they have their first true leaves, prick them out into pots or modules for growing on.

Weather Watch Wisborough Green Rainfall for February was 75mm – (last year 50mm - 9 yr average 73mm). I read in the national press there was concern that reservoirs were not as full as the winter rains have been less than usual – let’s hope this is not a portent for a summer drought!

However, at time of writing, March is already wetter than average!

Highest temperature was 18.3°C at Kew Gardens in London – coldest for the month was minus 10°C at Altnaharra (Sutherland).

A somewhat cloudy February – to get the most sun in the UK you should have been in the Shetland Isles. Not so on February 23rd as Storm Doris swept into the North – luckily we missed the worst of it.

Sunday 9th April - Palm Sunday Procession The annual procession will be held on Sunday 9 th April 3pm from the Sacred Heart in Petworth. We’re praying for lovely April sunshine (not showers!) for this wonderful traditional event. The procession will go through Petworth with the town band, donkeys and a Palm Sunday script read outside each of the churches in the town.

The event will end at St Mary’s Church with tea and cakes. It would be great if you and your family and friends could join us.

Friday 17th May – Dr Ruth Valerio ‘Hope in a Changing World’ The Spring Lecture will be held in St Mary’s Petworth at 7.30pm with the inspirational Dr Valerio who holds a PhD for research into simplicity and consumerism. Ruth is the Churches and Theology Director for A Rocha UK which is a Christian charity working for protection and restoration of the natural world. Her Christian faith and spirituality are central to her life, and from this bedrock comes a deep desire to work for social justice, equality and ecological flourishing. Should be a fascinating talk and will be followed by wine and nibbles as ever.
