Pastoral Letter Hosanna to the Son of David! Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord! Hosanna in the highest heaven! (Matthew 21:9 ) What a difference a week makes. Jesus enters Jerusalem on Palm Sunday and everyone is celebrating, cheering and waving branches to proclaim His arrival and the fulfilment of a centuries old prophecy regarding the coming Messiah. By Friday the mood has changed from celebration to condemnation! Jesus is now a spectacle of ridicule and revulsion, with a crown of thorns on His head, he is paraded through the streets, blooded and beaten after a show trial, to face a criminal’s death on a cross. Yet, not even the Roman execution squad, detailed to carry out the task, could have understood the implications of what they were doing when Jesus cries out “Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing.” Luke 23:34. Those words must have sounded like the last gasp, of a deranged man, or the Son of God, praying for those who were nailing Him to the cross. After His death, Jesus is laid to rest in a tomb that was never going to become a shrine to a great moral teacher, but a sign that the grave is not the end. For He has broken the bonds of sin and death by dying in our place, and opening the gates of Heaven to all who recognise their need for His, ’Amazing Grace’ to fill their hearts and lives. That first Easter morning dawned brighter than any other, for the shadow of fear and 5 death, that had hung over Jesus’ followers after his arrest and execution, had dissipated like the morning mist. This new day began with tears shed by Mary at the tomb as she said, “They have taken my Lord away”. Seeing a man she assumed was the gardener, she asked “Where have you put him, and I will get him.” He then called her by name, to which she responded,” ‘Rabboni’, Teacher.” John 20:16. The Lord’s presence fulfilled her deepest need, bringing joy and peace. She then ran to share the good news with the disciples. This same Jesus, called all His friends by name to come and follow Him. He still does today, to all, right across the world, meeting the deepest of needs. So come and find out more, join us as we celebrate His love this Holy Week and Eastertide. Clive and Marion

Family Support Work News Dear Friends, As I write this we are preparing for World Book Day tomorrow (7th March). Thanks to the generosity of our supporters we are able to give a personalised book to every child we support – relevant to their age, interests and reading abilities. It’s often the only time that they are given their own books to keep and we know how much it means to them, so thank you to everybody who has donated books or book tokens. During half term we took a group of families to Chichester Cathedral to participate in their family activity day, which was greatly enjoyed by everybody who attended. Our day-to-day work continues to be primarily focussed on helping our families to access the relevant services and support they need. Relationship breakdown and domestic violence feature heavily at the moment, so please remember these families in your prayers. Finally, our annual Easter Walk is now open for registration and we would love you to join us. On Easter Monday we will be tackling a 7-mile walk beginning (and ending) at Alfriston and taking in the famous Long Man of Wilmington. We are hoping to raise £10,000 this year and your support would be greatly appreciated. More information can be found on our website www.familysupportwork.org (under the Get Involved section). Wisborough Green Primary School News Fizz, pop, bang! The science fair got an explosive reaction from children and parents during science week. The older children were set a challenge to set up a science experiment for the younger children, explaining scientific phenomenon. There were indoor fireworks, colour changing solutions, bouncing eggs, volcanic eruptions and rocket launchers to name just a few. The children worked in unity, challenged themselves scientifically and made sure everyone had lots of fun. Colour Challenges really do create a buzz around the school. Each colour team worked together to design and make the best aeroplane to fly across the school hall. The Grande Finale saw Blue team entry take the lead, with their plane flying an amazing 11 metres! The challenge wasn't just about winning though, listening to each other, sharing ideas and solving problems were all important. The teams scored points for showing how well they cooperated and for creative thinking. We really have loved science week this year. Thank you to our brilliant staff team for the exciting experiences they plan for our children. #creatingfuturescientists World Book Day celebrated our love of books, with everyone coming dressed as their favourite book character. As a school, we wrote an adventurous story using objects to inspire us. Henry Adams Estate Agent set the challenge to design a pet with superpowers as a new book character. The children love the competitions and the great prizes they win. Thank you for all your support.

Our Travel Committee recently met to discuss how we can further improve the parking around the school. We are worried about how fast some cars drive down Durbans Road and how dangerous it is to cross. Teresa Baker and Heidi Lang have kindly volunteered to wear high viz vests to encourage vehicles to slow down and to ensure the children cross the road safely. If you would like to join them, by wearing a reflective vest to promote safer crossing, then pop in and see us. (See p 30 for more details.) Our next exciting project is the production of our very first school magazine (see p 30). Roland attended one of our meetings to share his wealth of knowledge. It has really made us realise what an amazing job the production team at AdVinc do every month. Thank you for all your advice Roland, we can't wait to share our first edition with you. Nature Notes At the end of last year Brian Smith sent me a picture taken by a friend in Ashington – and as I start my notes for 2019, I must share it with you. This is Raymond (named after a certain French chef!) and we hear he’s still going strong in his Ashington garden. Meanwhile the woodpeckers are drumming and should be nesting soon, a longtailed tit flickered out of a bush with a little feather in its beak, blackbirds are calling, chaffinches are abounding, tits, starlings, nuthatch, sparrows etc are demolishing the feeders, and a chic pair of pied wagtails are strutting their stuff each morning and evening. The winter visitors can be still heard here and there, with a very noisy group of redwings and fieldfares up in Bedham - 200 or more I’m told! Bedham has ravens too, and one evening a friend watched as four of them flushed a sparrowhawk from some conifers. As it emerged, it disturbed a bat from its roost there. It was a bit of a ‘dogfight’ moment as the sparrowhawk seemed to make a grab, but the bat flipped and dodged until the hawk flew off – whereupon the bat spiralled way up high and flew off southwards. Would a hawk try and take a bat? Hard to imagine, but I wish I’d been there! The same chum was sitting on a bench by Burton Pond when a water rail came out of the reeds and walked calmly round him and back into the pond edge. Some people 13 have all the luck! They are a rare sight these days. He saw four little egrets too! I’m waiting to hear the chiff-chaffs as usual - to confirm that spring really has sprung. Someone else will hear the cuckoo first of course, but as I’ve said before, as long as they arrive and all the other migrants too, I don’t mind being last. The trees and hedges are starting to bud, the wild plum is lighting up the corner in our lane. Daffodils are everywhere, and primroses, bluebells and many more are well on the way. Talking of flowers – about the middle of February my eye was caught by a large bumble bee circling a solitary purple crocus which was still in a tight bud, like the crocus in Picture 1. The bee ignored me as I stood right over it and watched. It circled round it, went away, then circled again. Eventually it landed at the base of the petals, somehow nudged them apart and completely disappeared inside! The tip of the flower was undisturbed and was no more open when the bee emerged and flew off. I’m cross I can’t tell you which bee species it was, but how clever was that! NB Picture 2 is the actual crocus two days later, after a frost. Reports (from a reliable source!) of a sedge warbler seen in February – so did it overwinter? Or just come early? Let’s hope all the others join him……and soon! Sue J

nsored Activities Village Care Scheme The St. Peter’s Village Care Team meets regularly and its aims are to give help and support to the residents of Wisborough Green in as many ways as possible. This includes visiting people who are housebound, in hospitals or in nursing homes, and comforting those who are suffering from illness, bereavement, loneliness etc. We also provide (through the West Sussex County Council) a free library service for those who are unable to leave their homes. See next page. Each team member is responsible for looking after an area of the village, for welcoming new arrivals, and for giving friendly advice. We produce “Welcome to Wisborough Green Cards” containing useful information which are always delivered personally. When appropriate, we send out cards on the first anniversaries of Baptism and Confirmation, and for bereavements. We are always open to suggestions and new ideas to help the community. Please feel free to contact Suzanne Mosley on 01403 700946 for any enquiries.

Village Car Service The Village Car Service, a part of the St Peter’s Village Care Scheme (see above), has now been in operation for over twenty years. It provides transport to Doctor’s and Dentist’s surgeries and local hospitals on request. There is no charge for this service but donations are invited from passengers as these are ploughed back into the Team’s budget to pay petrol expenses to the volunteer drivers. The service is co-ordinated by Jennie Burr (tel:01403 700607). We have a dedicated team of drivers and are extremely grateful to them all, but always need new recruits to cover busy periods. If anyone is interested in driving for the village please contact Suzanne Mosley on 15 01403 700946.

Village Library Service for Housebound Readers This service is available for readers who are unable to leave their homes. There are large print and talking books available if required. If you would like a selection of books delivered to your home on a temporary or regular basis, please contact: Angela Craddock on 700336.

‘St Peter’s Chain Gang’ The Churchyard at St Peter’s is an historic record of successive generations, a home for funerary monuments of architectural and aesthetic excellence, a setting for the church itself and a place for reflection and prayer. As such, its maintenance is of the highest importance. To complement the regular mowing the churchyard receives throughout the year, St Peter’s Chain Gang has been formed. This working party meets every other Tuesday in the churchyard from 9.30am to 12.00 noon to carry out routine tasks aimed at keeping everything neat and tidy. Extra help is always welcome even if you can come for just part of the time. Please bring gardening tools if you are able. Dates for April / May 2019 (weather permitting): Tuesday 2nd April Tuesday 16th April Tuesday 30th April Tuesday 14th May Tuesday 28th May

Brother Angelo It is with considerable sadness that we report the death of Brother Angelo on 21 st February, aged 90. Br Angelo started his secular life as a hairdresser in London and, after a serious illness in the early 1960s, decided to become a Friar in the Franciscan Order. In 1963 he became a member of the Society of St Francis and in 1966 trained for ordination at Chichester Theological College prior to being ordained as a priest in 1969. One of the many roles that Br Angelo undertook with great energy and enthusiasm was to help with services at parishes where there was a vacancy for an incumbent. It was in this capacity that he became known to many of the congregation in Wisborough Green when he helped out following Revd Simon Newham’s departure and again following Revd Peter Dixon’s departure.

He is remembered with considerable affection as a man of great inspiration who brought his extensive experience of life and a deep faith with him and who enriched the lives of those with whom he came into contact. For the last 10 years of his life he lived at Terry’s Cross, near Henfield, which was founded as a retirement home for clergy, where he had been very active in ministering to the other residents. RIP

Vacancy – School Governor Are you looking for a challenging but rewarding role? Are you able to commit a few hours of your time each month? Are you interested in joining a friendly team of professionals and developing your skills in a board level environment? We are looking for a volunteer to join our governing body. You don’t need to have an understanding of the education system (there is plenty of training and support available), or even be a parent. You just need to be over 18 and able to commit a few hours of your time each month to do some background reading, carry out school visits and attend 6 evening meetings each year. If you think you have the skills, character and time to contribute, please get in touch to find out more: gov@wisboroughgreenschool.org.uk

Make a real difference to education and give something back to your local community

WISBOROUGH GREEN’S NEIGHBOURHOOD PLAN REVIEW Progress Update Updating the policies and assessing the proposed development sites form only part of the review process. We will also need to look at the Neighbourhood Plan Vision Statement, Objectives, the Strengths, Weakness, Opportunities and Threats (SWOT) Table and Community Action Plan to ensure they are up to date and continue to reflect the needs and wishes of the community. You may think, for example, that some items in the SWOT analysis have changed category, i.e., an opportunity such as "Create additional green/open community spaces and wildlife habitats" has become a strength with the gift to the village of Songhurst Meadow. Or, that a weakness such as "Parking Congestion" is now a threat for the village. Within the Community Action Plan many aspirations have been achieved and others are in progress. Two new noticeboards have been provided, a wildlife area and new trees are to be planted at Songhurst Meadow, and the old Telephone Kiosk is now our new village Information Centre. A scheme to improve parking and link up new housing and pavements to the school with safer crossing points has been planned and additional soft surfacing in the playground on the Green is in the pipeline. So some items can be ticked off the Action Plan and perhaps new items need to be added, but definitely progress to celebrate. The Neighbourhood Plan questionnaire and public consultation event will request your views to provide the knowledge we need to inform and justify the changes made. Please start to think about what is good and bad about the village so that when the questionnaire drops through your door in late May / early 23 June, you will be prepared! Sheena Overington, WG Parish Councillor

Village Hall News Well, at last we are starting to move forward again! We had a very constructive first meeting with Philips Chartered Surveyors as a result of which we agreed to appoint a Quantity Surveyor to prepare a detailed Cost Report which can be used to support our grant applications and also to appoint a specialist firm to carry out an Asbestos Survey of the Hall which is required by law before any work can be started. We also agreed, subject to reasonable cost, to appoint a specialist firm to advise the most cost effective solutions to the heating requirements for the modernised facilities. Philips have begun work on updating our detailed drawings to meet the conditions that were set out in the Planning Consent given by Chichester DC and to begin the process of preparing a specification for applying for Building Regulations consent. In addition, our dialogue with the Big Lottery Fund has been re-started which we hope will lead to a formal application for a grant in the coming weeks/months. SCHOOL CROSSING ON DURBANS ROAD

30

As many of you are aware, the 'school crossing' on Durbans Road has always been an area of concern when it comes to road safety for the children walking to school in Wisborough Green. This problem has become frighteningly dangerous since the contractors’ vehicles from Bluebell Meadow have been parking adjacent to the lay-by. As parents, we keep a close eye on our children but, often, cars travel at inappropriate speeds and visibility is very poor. You may or may not have realised also that there is absolutely no signage on that road indicating that there is even a school in the area, let alone that children cross there. Because of the increased risk at the moment, and while we look at ways of addressing the situation longer term, we have decided to wear 'high vis' jackets whilst crossing our children, so that people become more aware as they drive through the village. It has not been possible to find a fulltime school crossing patrol, but we hope that this will at least improve visibility in the short term. If you would like to help, and are happy to do the same, please contact the school office. Thank you!

WISBOROUGH GREEN’S SCHOOL MARKETING CLUB LOOKING FOR SUPPORT We’d like to introduce you to the Marketing Club from Wisborough Green School. We have been tasked with finding new and imaginative ways of raising funds for our school. The school has over 200 pupils now and can provide a very valuable audience available to potential advertisers. We are busy producing a brand new 24-page school magazine that will be distributed in the local area and will contain news about the school, recipes, book reviews, and great features about the village. We’d really appreciate it if any companies who were interested in sponsoring the magazine in some way or taking out an advert could get in touch. We are hoping to involve the local media and are being supported by Ad Vincula, who are offering us great advice. We would really like to thank Roland Zilz for coming in and talking to us. If you would like further information, please email : office@wisboroughgreenschool.org.uk With grateful thanks from Issi, Karl, Lola, Tilly, Oliver, Lilly, Oscar and Willem.

Abseil for Parkinson’s UK 18 May 2019 Thursday 11th April 2019 is World Parkinson’s Day. Parkinson’s uk is

working to help the public understand Parkinsons so that everyone can see Parkinson’s as the serious health condition that it is, and the major impact it has on 31 everyday life, and want to do something about it. There are several people in our village living with Parkinson’s. It is a progressive disease for which there is, as yet no cure, but research teams are battling to change this. However this comes with an enormous cost.

On 18th May I am going to abseil down Guildford cathedral to raise money for Parkinson’s UK. It is terrifyingly high at 160 feet! Friends have said “how brave!” But it is all the people who have to endure the disease with no remission, that are brave, so a few minutes being petrified must be nothing compared with that. If anyone would like to sponsor me for any amount however small, I shall be eternally grateful and hope we can all make a difference. My fundraising page can be found on www.justgiving.com/fundraising/angiegooda or by my sponsorship form. Angie Gooda

Recipe of the Month Easter Egg Rocky Road This month’s recipe suggestion is an easy one that children might enjoy doing during the Easter holidays! Any Rocky Road recipe is a winner for me; I just love the combination of different textures, all covered in chocolate! What more could you want!!

Ingredients        

225g dark chocolate, broken into pieces 100g unsalted butter, cubed 2 tablespoons cocoa powder 2 tablespoons golden syrup 100g rich tea biscuits 50g mini marshmallows 50g dried cranberries 200g chocolate mini eggs

Method 1. Line a 20 x 30cm traybake tin with 2 sheets of cling film, in a criss-cross pattern (or use a more environmentally-friendly product! Baking parchment should work as you just need something to assist with removing the finished product from the tin!) Put the chocolate and butter in a large bowl set over a saucepan of gently simmering water and melt until smooth and glossy. 33 2. Remove from the heat and add the cocoa powder and golden syrup. Mix together until fully combined and leave to cool at room temperature for about 15 minutes. 3. Put the biscuits in a freezer bag and use a rolling bin to bash them, leaving some pieces chunkier than others. Stir into the cooled chocolate with the marshmallows, cranberries 150g of the mini eggs. 4. Pour the mix into the tin and press down with the back of a spoon until even. Scatter over the remaining mini eggs, pressing them in slightly and leave to set in the fridge for 1 hour. 5. Remove from the tin and cut into bars to serve. Will keep for up to 1 week in an airtight container. (Recipe courtesy of Good Food Magazine, April 2015 ) Judie Donovan

Wisborough Green History - THE Last month ended with the opening of the northern section of the canal from Newbridge to the River Wey at Shalford After the section of the Wey and Arun Junction Canal between Newbridge and Shalford opened with great ceremony in September 1816, the canal settled down to what the proprietors hoped would be a great success. They thought that, as there was now an alternative link between London and Littlehampton and onwards by sea to Portsmouth, it was presumed that there would be many advantages in avoiding the coastal route to Portsmouth with all of its risks of bad weather, piracy by French privateers and the lengthy journey time. However, by the time the canal opened, the Napoleonic Wars had just been ended at the battle of Waterloo which removed the danger of attack by French ships in the English Channel. In practice, it turned out the journey time for the inland route was about the same as the coastal route but the former had the disadvantage of having to pay tolls to six different local authorities in addition to freight charges. All of this resulted in an average of just two or three cargoes daily in the first year or so. Figures for the first seven years showed the toll income to be just under 10% of the projected amount. However, what little through traffic that there was did result in a 25% increase in tolls on the Arun Navigation. Potential customers were deterred by the need for transhipment from barge to a sea-going ship at Arundel, the small dimensions of Hardham 36 Tunnel and the low arches of Stopham Bridge (see illustration) both of which had insufficient clearance for the larger barges. Also, the canal route was affected by extremes of the weather; the summer drought meant that there was sometimes not enough water to support a barge carrying more than 30 tons (a sea coaster could carry up to 180 tons) and the flooding in winter could cause barges to sail inadvertently beyond the banks of the canal and onto agricultural land. However, the main problem for barge masters was nothing to do with physical impediments of the canal but simply that, because the canal was mainly in a rural area with no industry, there was little local traffic and therefore there was great difficulty for the London barge-masters in finding a load (known as 'back-carriage') for the return journey. Recognition of the limitations of the Arun Navigation in 1818 resulted in a list of works required to turn around the fortunes of the whole canal. An incentive to undertake these works was the prospect of a new canal being constructed between Arundel and Portsmouth. It was realised that the need to transfer the cargo from barge to sea-going vessel at Arundel was very unpopular and it was hoped that the new canal would alleviate this.

E WEY AND ARUN CANAL (Part 6) Planning for the canal was completed in 1815 a year before the Wey and Arun opened and construction started in 1818. The Portsmouth and Arundel Canal enabled barges to sail all the way from London to Portsmouth without requiring sea travel although parts of it across Thorney Island, around Hayling Island and towards Portsea Island made use of a channel dredged in the shallow coastal waters. The only proper canal construction was from Ford at the junction with the Arun to Birdham and for about four miles across Portsea Island to a canal basin by Commercial Road in central Portsmouth. There was also a two mile spur to Chichester where its canal basin remains today just south of the railway station and in use for leisure purposes. The works were undertaken with a real intention to be ready for the opening of the Portsmouth canal although delays in building the final section towards Ford took off some of the pressure. The work started in 1821; the main works were raising the bridges from Pallingham to Greatham especially raising the main arch of Stopham bridge to allow barges to pass unhindered, building a lower lock at Pallingham, widening Orfold lock, dredging the river in many places on the Arun to remove sandbars (or shoals) that were causing barges to run aground, building a towpath along the east bank of the Arun from Houghton south to near Arundel, generally widen the navigation to a minimum of 35', making passing places south of Newbridge and erecting guide posts to enable barges to travel in time of floods. However, nothing could be done about Hardham tunnel short of rebuilding it. The Portsmouth canal was completed in May 1823 and through traffic started. However, like the opening of the Wey and Arun where trade was less than 10% of the 37 anticipated tonnage, trade between Portsmouth and London in the first whole year was only 3,650 tons and not the hoped for 55,000 tons. The main problem, as ever, was the lack of guaranteed back-carriage. However, the opening of Portsmouth canal had the benefit to both the Arun Navigation and the Wey and Arun. Tolls rose by around 50% for both sections of the canal but it was the Arun that benefitted most from the Portsmouth canal as much of its traffic now came via the Portsmouth canal. Much of the canal traffic terminated at Newbridge from where it supplied the local farms and villages with coal, groceries, fertilizers and fancy goods from London and was the most convenient means of dispatching their own wares and farm produce to market. (Continued next month) Richard B The illustration shows Rowner Lock and lock house on the Wey and Arun in 1843. Charles Baverstock was the lock-keeper. His family kept bees and sold freshly-baked bread, butter, honey and home-made ginger beer to the bargees as well as assisting in the collection of the tolls (source: P A L Vine)

The Gardener’s Calendar

by Ian Clemens

 Plant summer-flowering bulbs such as Lilies and Gladiolus into beds, borders and containers.  Divide Hostas before they come into leaf. Pot them up and bring them along to the May plant sale.  Divide primroses after they have flowered.  Deadhead daffodils and tulips as the flowers finish but leave the foliage intact allowing it to die back naturally.  Plant your chitted potatoes outside in the ground or in potato grow bags, but remember to keep well covered if there is a chance of frost.  Protect your fruit blossom from late frosts by covering them with fleece on cold nights.  Plant out strawberry beds, making sure you enrich the soil first with plenty of well-rotted manure. Place cloches over your strawberry plants for earlier crops.  Keep an eye on your seedlings - as soon as they have their first true leaves, prick them out into pots or modules for growing on.  If you haven't already, give your greenhouse a thorough scrub with hot soapy water to get rid of pests and diseases and to let more light in. I actually spray mine with household bleach solution which seems to kill off everything.

Lady B will be here soon! Thank you so much to Clive Marion and the Xpresso ladies for allowing me to have a stall on 1st March coffee morning to raise funds for Lady B. Well thank you to everyone that came bought and donated - an amazing £70 was made - which has made a lovely contribution to Lady B’s funds. Lady B is on target for hopefully coming home in Easter holidays if all goes well. Obviously being Afghanistan and still a war torn country nothing is guaranteed but soon we will have Ladybug’s daughter. Thank you so much to everyone within the village that have also put donations through our letter box. I honestly cannot say thank you enough to the generosity shown to my family and myself and also to the daughter of Ladybug. Donna Pont

The Parishes Wildlife Group Michael Joseph gave a wonderful talk on Gardening and Wildlife on March 8 th. About twenty of us very much enjoyed our evening as he described how we can all encourage wildlife to thrive - without compromising the look and feel of our gardens. With the help of an excellent set of computer images, Michael talked us through his and Jane’s amazing and beautiful wildflower garden and their two excellent ponds, with glimpses of the varied, and occasionally exotic, creatures that enjoy their hospitality! All sorts of birds, insects, small mammals and aquatics like frogs, toads and newts really appreciate any wildlife corridors we can leave undisturbed for them, and a wildflower patch is an ideal place for us to start encouraging them in. Even quite a small area will harbour many more creatures than we think. The whole natural food chain can benefit from a little less over-fastidiousness on the part of us humans, as Michael showed us very neatly. He answered any questions as we went along and he certainly inspired some us to take another look at our gardens, and to spend a little less time clearing all around our garden edges, under our hedges, around any ponds, and to let a few groundcover areas creep a little wider perhaps? Many thanks to Jane and Michael for all they do for wildlife, and for sharing their experience with us. Sue Jameson

Subscriptions are now due £7 single and £12 joint membership – cheque payable to WGHS (deliver to Alison Midwinter, Fernlea, Kirdford Rd, WG) or Bank Transfer – sort code 60-02-31 –a/c no 95988823 – reference, use your initial and surname. Early notice for Plant Sale – Saturday 18th May – do grow or divide plants towards this important fund-raiser. WGHS

Next Market: Thursday 11th April 2019 March Market News: Once again the Village Market was filled with a lovely buzz of activity! Although Storm Gareth was creating a very windy and rainy backdrop for visitors we were greeted by the main door by a lovely display of Spring Flowers by Sussex Roses Nine Gables Nursery…miniature narcissi, grape hyacinth and many more beautiful bouquets. Then as you entered the main hub of the Market you were met with eye catching coloured bunting and lime green tablecloths as a backdrop to the interesting and visually entertaining stalls! How exciting to find four new stall holders that have joined our Market giving the morning a new energy. Located next to our lovely large display of all types of bread (and new flours) on offer from The Hungry Guest I found Cwerky Creations who had handmade Mother’s Day cards and other eye catching cards along with a portfolio of wedding invitation ideas ahead of the Spring wedding season and admitted that our Market was a “good venue for networking! Next to this stall was another new stall holder Tropic Skin Care…whose display had a backdrop of lovely tropical colours that subtly drew you towards all the interesting bottles and creams for body and face filled with luscious, exotic ingredients that offer transformative results for your skin and have given thought for the environment too! The smell of one of the products with coconut made me feel like I wanted to jump into the jar! Feeling totally spoilt for choice, the next stall along, was another new stall offering an abundance of cards for every occasion along with colourful gift wrap by Flamingo Paperie who have taken over Phoenix Cards and added to the stock, so lots of choice for everyone! In addition to our regular craft stall holders who offer a wide selection of handmade products from textiles, pottery and artwork, (even a stall selling all year round wreaths and bits for our garden birds) our Village Market is also fortunate to be able to offer a fishmonger, butcher, cheese maker, a baker, linseed provider, and an organic whole foods refill station run by Earthkind, and a recently added stall selling 47 (what has been termed) “the most delicious eggs for miles around”! Overall a Market worth making the effort to attend once a month, not only to support your Village Community, but also a place to meet people and catch up on local news, over a tea or coffee, and one of the delicious cakes that our Macmillan Cancer Charity Stall has on offer. We are looking forward to welcoming a new Stall holder, Sandra Donaghue Designs, at the April Market, who has a range of soft furnishing accessories for your home and as our Market is a week before Easter we will be raffling a huge chocolate Easter Bunny made by PURE Chocolate Truffles of almost 2 kg of milk chocolate! We look forward to seeing you there…. Wisborough Green Market Committee wisboroughmarket@gmail.com

WI Report On the 7th March, Nikki Mould gave us a talk and demonstration of the history of aromatherapy. We are now a great deal more knowledgeable about how and from where aromatherapy treatments come. Nikki brought with her the oils, some of which are very expensive. She is obviously passionate about her work which is not only aromatherapy but also Massage, Acupressure and Hot & Cold Stone Therapy to name a few. For our April meeting on the 4th, Madeleine Salvetti will be giving a talk on ‘Mistresses & Their Influence On History’. We may even know of a few!! All potential members are welcome. Weather Watch Wisborough Green Rainfall for the month of February was 68mm – last year 34 mm and my 12 yr average 68mm. The lovely weather towards the end of February brought record- breaking temperatures. Maximum temperature in the UK was 21.2°C at Kew Gardens and the coldest temp was minus 15.4°C recorded at Braemar, Aberdeenshire (again!). For Wisborough Green the max and min was 19.3°C and minus 4.8°C respectively. 49 It was the second sunniest February since 1929. I explained about the polar vortex in January caused by the Coriolis Effect, so what is the Coriolis Effect? The Earth's rotation means that we experience an apparent force known as the Coriolis force. This deflects the direction of the wind to the right in the northern hemisphere and to the left in the southern hemisphere. This is why the wind-flow around low and high-pressure systems circulates in opposing directions in each hemisphere. The Coriolis effect was described by the 19th-century French physicist and mathematician Gustave-Gaspard de Coriolis in 1835. He formulated theories of fluid dynamics through studying waterwheels, and realized the same theories could be applied to the motion of fluids on the surface of the Earth. So now you know! The Balloons Are Back The Wisborough Green Charity Balloon Festival team are delighted to announce that this year's festival will be taking place over two days, Saturday 31st August and Sunday 1st September. We will be bringing the balloons back to the green for two flights on both days, at dawn and dusk. Last year we were blessed with stunning weather and raised nearly £10K for Chestnut Tree House. The team was invited to visit the Hospice in November of last year and saw first hand how the money raised makes such a difference to the children and their families. Chestnut Tree receive very little funding from the government, so literally every penny counts. This year we would like to double the money we are able to donate to them with your help. In years gone by, and last year in particular, we have had fantastic support from the villagers, helping with jobs such as making tea for balloonists and passengers in the morning, putting traffic cones out, delivering leaflets and, of course, the very important job of marshalling, keeping everyone safe. With more than double the work load (and double the fun!) this year we are asking for any and all offers of help. We are also looking for local businesses willing to help sponsor the event to ensure that the full flight ticket price can go direct to the charity. Flight tickets will go on sale 51 in July and will be priced at last year's price of £120 per person, per flight. To volunteer your help or for more information on sponsorship opportunities email: sada@airworksworldwide.com. With thanks Sada, Brian, Jamie, Cecilia and WGBF Team

Annual Unlock Walk - Saturday 27th April 2019 The 'Unlock Walk' supporting churches in inner city London takes place this year on 27th April in Merton, Morden and Wimbledon. Unlock says: “Over the 35 years of Unlock walks we have never managed to visit this part of London, so the 2019 walk should offer something new to everyone including the old faithfuls. The area has its own interesting history; there’s an abbey/priory, some important political, royal, and railway history too.” The walk this year is just over 7 miles long and we visit about 7 churches – so not too difficult! Do let me know if you would like to join us. Tel. 700700. Judy Moorey
