Pastoral Letter The Lord does not look at the things people look at. People look at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart . (1 Samuel 16:7b ) For many in the beauty and cosmetics industry, February is an important month, because of the romance that has grown up around St. Valentine’s Day, which falls on Thursday 14th. Men and women will spend considerable amounts on trips to Hairdressers, Spas and Beauty parlours to look their best for that romantic trip or meal out, or even a proposal of marriage, which may be timed to coincide with St. Valentine’s Day. But who was St. Valentine? It seems he was a Christian Priest who lived during the reign of Emperor Claudias, who had passed an edict prohibiting marriage between young soldiers and their sweethearts. The reasoning behind this intervention, was the belief that unmarried soldiers would be better in combat if they did not have the concerns of a wife and family to worry about. However, Valentine continued to marry Christian couples in secret, believing that the sacred bond of Christian marriage was God given. He was eventually caught, tortured, and executed in Rome in AD 269. The verse quoted above, is the Lord God responding to Samuel the Prophet, who was in search of a new King for Israel after King Saul had failed to follow the Lord God’s direction, but chose his own way away from that required by God. Samuel expected to anoint with Holy Oil one of the strongest and tallest of the sons of Jesse, to take on the Royal mantle, but instead, he was given a lesson, not to look only on the outward 5 appearance, but seek God’s prompting, because the Lord looks on the heart. David, the youngest of Jesse’s sons, a shepherd boy, was chosen who would later defeat Goliath the Philistine, and become the greatest of Israel’s Kings. Whatever our appearance, the greatest gift we have is that we are all created in the Image of God, and to live a life that reflects God’s promises in what we say and do. If you have any questions about faith we are running an Alpha Course from the beginning of February and you would be very welcome to join us. Contact 700339 for more information. I hope you have an enjoyable Valentine’s Day, whatever you may be doing. Clive and Marion

It is a peaceful time when you can relax, recharge your batteries and listen to music, poetry, readings and prayers. You will come away refreshed and ready to carry on! Please contact Wendy Duff on 700295 for details.

Chain of Prayer Worried about a loved one, a friend or yourself and would like prayers to be said by a chain of people? Contact Wendy 700295 or Gillian 700157 and they will start the chain by contacting the person next to them on the list and so it goes all the way round. Prayer is a powerful and important part of life and one should never under estimate its effect. You don't need to give any details of the problem just ask for prayers to be said and it will happen. Please note that it will be treated with total confidentiality.

Prayers are offered for parishioners who are in special need, especially the sick and frail. Please advise either of the churchwardens of any persons or situations you 6 would like remembered in this way. Petworth Area Churches Together (PACT) - working together in harmony

Spring Lecture – Friday 5th April 6pm at St Mary’s Petworth Damian Hinds MP, Secretary of State for Education, to speak with reference to Faith Schools. Please note the earlier start time of 6pm. All welcome, especially anybody connected with local Schools. Palm Sunday Procession – the annual procession will be held on Sunday 14th April at 3pm from the Sacred Heart Church, Petworth. ‘As Jesus entered Jerusalem, the people went wild with excitement – the entire city was thrown into an uproar! Some asked “Who is this man?” And the crowds shouted back “This is Jesus! He’s the prophet from Nazareth of Galilee!”’ Matthew's Gospel Chap. 21 Verses 10 and 11. This wonderful procession through Petworth depicts Jesus’ triumphal entry into Jerusalem with the story being told along the journey and songs as we process through the streets. We’ll have the Petworth Town Band, a donkey and a Palm Sunday script read by a variety of church goers in the town. The event finishes at St Mary’s where participants are made welcome with tea and cake . Kate & Karl Ayling

Specifically, I would love to see some fresh photos (or original artwork) representing Wisborough Green in different months of the year to use as magazine covers. Photos must have a minimum resolution of 300dpi, be in focus and have good contrast in order to reproduce well in the printing process. Please send to editor@stpeterswg.org.uk. Roland Zilz This magazine can also be viewed on line at: http://www.wisboroughgreenparishchurch.org.uk/index.php/parish-magazine

Find out more about the Wey & Arun Canal Did you know that Zachariah Keppel, a builder from Alfold, went bankrupt trying to construct the Wey & Arun Canal in 1813? Or that the canal was in part built by French prisoners of war? Local groups and organisations can find out more fascinating facts about the Wey & Arun Canal, its history and present journey back to life by booking a talk from the knowledgeable team at the Wey & Arun Canal Trust. Trust speakers can provide presentations on every aspect of the canal, covering all interests and age groups. Previous bookings have ranged from gardening clubs and wine groups to Scouts and Cubs. John Dodwell, volunteer speakers organiser, said: “Our speakers are experts in the history of the waterway that runs from Shalford in Surrey to Pallingham in West Sussex. We bring to life the story of how the canal came to be; the characters behind its construction and those who pioneered its restoration. “The story continues today and we can give an insight into the current restoration. Back in 1813 navvies came from all over the country to build the canal and navvies still volunteer today to bring the canal back to its former glory.” There are still spaces left on this year’s programme. There is no fixed charge for a speaker, but a £60 donation is asked for to support the Trust’s restoration work. Anyone interested in booking a talk should email talks@weyandarun.co.uk, or go to https://weyarun.org.uk/content/request-speaker.

Wey & Arun Canal Trust on the hunt for helpers Everyone can make a difference. That’s the message from the Wey & Arun Canal Trust as it launches an appeal for volunteers in 2019. The Trust is holding a number of taster days for those interested in joining its working parties, giving the chance to try out some of the jobs volunteers tackle and see some of the restoration teams in action. “The Wey & Arun Canal Trust volunteers are achieving amazing things every week, working towards our aim of restoring the waterway that runs from Shalford in Surrey to Pallingham in West Sussex,” said Trust chairman Sally Schupke. “The Trust is run almost entirely by volunteers; they aren’t all experienced builders or forestry workers, just ordinary members of the public who are proving the extraordinary can be achieved with the right training, tools and motivation,”. Sally Schupke highlighted the many benefits of volunteering with the Trust. She said: “You’ll get a warm welcome from the friendly men and women who volunteer with us, people who come from all walks of life. You’ll also learn new skills, guided by our experienced team, and we’ll ensure you get all the equipment and training you need. “On top of this is the knowledge you are leaving a legacy for years to come as more of the canal is restored for the enjoyment of all. So far 22 bridges and two aqueducts have been reconstructed, eleven locks restored and a new one built, several culverts rebuilt and many miles of canal bed cleared and dredged. None of this could have been achieved without volunteers. We encourage everyone to come and join us for a cuppa at our taster days and find out how you can be part of the success story.” The taster days are being held from 11am to 1pm on Wednesday 20 February and Thursday 14 March at the recently restored section at Dunsfold/Alfold. For full details and to sign up see our website www.weyandarun.co.uk, or email events@weyandarun.co.uk. 13

nsored Activities Village Care Scheme The St. Peter’s Village Care Team meets regularly and its aims are to give help and support to the residents of Wisborough Green in as many ways as possible. This includes visiting people who are housebound, in hospitals or in nursing homes, and comforting those who are suffering from illness, bereavement, loneliness etc. We also provide (through the West Sussex County Council) a free library service for those who are unable to leave their homes. See next page. Each team member is responsible for looking after an area of the village, for welcoming new arrivals, and for giving friendly advice. We produce “Welcome to Wisborough Green Cards” containing useful information which are always delivered personally. When appropriate, we send out cards on the first anniversaries of Baptism and Confirmation, and for bereavements. We are always open to suggestions and new ideas to help the community. Please feel free to contact Suzanne Mosley on 01403 700946 for any enquiries.

Village Car Service The Village Car Service, a part of the St Peter’s Village Care Scheme (see above), has now been in operation for over twenty years. It provides transport to Doctor’s and Dentist’s surgeries and local hospitals on request. There is no charge for this service but donations are invited from passengers as these are ploughed back into the Team’s budget to pay petrol expenses to the volunteer drivers. The service is co-ordinated by Jennie Burr (tel:01403 700607). We have a dedicated team of drivers and are extremely grateful to them all, but always need new recruits to cover busy periods. If anyone is interested in driving for the village please contact Suzanne Mosley on 15 01403 700946.

Village Library Service for Housebound Readers This service is available for readers who are unable to leave their homes. There are large print and talking books available if required. If you would like a selection of books delivered to your home on a temporary or regular basis, please contact: Angela Craddock on 700336.

‘St Peter’s Chain Gang’ The Churchyard at St Peter’s is an historic record of successive generations, a home for funerary monuments of architectural and aesthetic excellence, a setting for the church itself and a place for reflection and prayer. As such, its maintenance is of the highest importance. To complement the regular mowing the churchyard receives throughout the year, St Peter’s Chain Gang has been formed. This working party meets every other Tuesday in the churchyard from 9.30am to 12.00 noon to carry out routine tasks aimed at keeping everything neat and tidy. Extra help is always welcome even if you can come for just part of the time. Please bring gardening tools if you are able. Dates for February/March 2019 (weather permitting): Tuesday 5th February Tuesday 19th February Tuesday 5th March Tuesday 19th March

Wisborough Green Sports The Sports Association is now “Wisborough Green Sports” a registered Charity. This process was achieved towards the end of 2018 and will enable all Clubs to benefit from the WGS Charity status in raising funds. The objective of the charity is to support the clubs by providing better and new facilities. Going forward we will be publishing a full list of fixtures for all Clubs each month to allow residents to see who is playing and, hopefully, come out to support the teams, whether it be Cricket, Football, Stoolball or Touch Rugby. The Pavilion continues to be open as usual and we are looking to recruit a member of staff to work in the bar Friday nights and Saturday afternoons. Please contact Michael Gadd on 700727 for further information or ask at the bar. Clare Steere Secretary

Six Nations Rugby Wisborough Green Sports is planning to hold an event to celebrate the impending and extremely exciting opening England Game of the Six Nations on the 2nd February. Kick off is at 16.45. Chilli con carne will be available from the bar on an honesty box basis for eager supporters to buy during and after the game at a suggested donation of £4. Whilst we cannot promise it will be Michelin star quality, it will certainly be at least AA Rosette. 20% of the bar sales will be going towards WGS fund for continuing improvement of the facilities. Come and cheer on the England Boys. All members and their guests are welcome!

Family Support Work News A very happy New Year to you all from everybody at FSW! We were extremely busy over the Christmas period, carrying out our usual work as well as organising many festive events for the families we support. During December we held 9 Christmas parties all across Sussex for over 500 children and their families. In addition we took 148 people to pantomimes and delivered 102 Christmas hampers on top of our normal food deliveries, to ensure that all the families we support had the opportunity to celebrate Christmas properly despite their daily challenges. We would like to say a huge thank you to everybody who contributed to this work with donations of toys, food or money – it really made a huge difference to our families. We are now very busy planning this year’s work and building on the successes of 2018, and hoping that we will soon be able to further increase the number of families we can support. WISBOROUGH GREEN’S NEIGHBOURHOOD PLAN REVIEW Your Neighbourhood Plan Review team of 7 voluntary members (3 residents, 3 Parish Councillors and the PC Clerk) has begun the task of identifying what action needs to be undertaken for this review. First of all, can we say a big THANK YOU to all Wisborough Green residents who responded to the Housing Needs Survey which has given us a clear indication of what future housing is required. It is reassuring that the results also support the evidence from our previous consultations that smaller, multi-use units, appropriate for down sizers, small families, couples, single residents and first-time buyers wishing to take the first step on the housing ladder, are what Wisborough Green needs within the village. You may already be aware that due to a housing shortfall in the Chichester District Council (CDC) Local Plan (also under review - see p24), the villages of Loxwood and Wisborough Green have been given a further housing allocation. Our village has been allocated 25 more homes to be provided by 2035, Loxwood 125 more homes. We may not want our little rural villages to change in character by increasing in size but this is not within our control. It will happen but, with an updated Neighbourhood Plan, at least we will have some influence over the siting and design. Potential Development Sites: Our next step is a call for sites for consideration and assessment. CDC has already been notified of some possible development sites but if you have land that you think has development potential in and around the village, please contact the Parish Council Clerk, Louise Davies, on 701102 or clerk@wisboroughgreenpc.org. All potential sites will undergo a rigorous and objective assessment for suitability against agreed set criteria prior to selection for 23 consultation. The cut-off date for sites to be considered is 31st March 2019.

OTHER STEPS IN THE NEIGHOURHOOD PLAN REVIEW Timeline: we have written and agreed a timetable for this Neighbourhood Plan review process to coincide with, and sit alongside, the Local Plan review. This is a working document that will be constantly updated. Neighbourhood Plan Policy Review: these policies have proved successful in protecting the village but are now being further improved, strengthened and updated where necessary. Housing Allocation Policy: is being prepared in conjunction with the Wisborough Green Trust, a Community Land Trust being formed to work with Housing Associations to provide affordable homes management within the new village developments. The policy aims to promote priority for local residents in need of affordable housing. Community Action Plan: is being updated as some projects are already completed, such as the new Information Point in the old telephone box and new Community Notice Boards, some are underway in conjunction with CDC and Highways, and there will no doubt be some new projects to add. Lastly, BE PREPARED TO GET INVOLVED. We need you ALL to attend the Public Consultation event later this year which will be held to underpin and provide evidence for the Neighbourhood Plan review process and updated Neighbourhood Plan. We will be actively seeking your ideas and opinions about shaping the future of Wisborough Green. More information to follow - watch this space! Sheena Overington WG Parish Council

Wisborough Green Scouts With the new year 1 month in we thought it would be a good idea to tell/ warn everyone about what the scouts are planning for 2019 going forward.

General renovations The back of the hut is being renovated in the new year by the scouts and with the grateful help of the parents, without whose support we would be lost. We have a whole series of activities planned for the scouts going forward, along with long-term plans to set up an explorer group in the village, because, frankly, the scouts behaviour and commitment to the group has made it possible.

Trips away We will be going on our third annual sailing weekend down at Cobnor this year. The older scouts are now onto their RYA three certificates. We will also be going on our third annual caving expedition at the end of the year with the lovely Paul Wilman, Badger, Tackleburry and the West Sussex scouts caving team, a more professional bunch you couldn’t find. And this time the scout leader won’t get stuck! Or if he does it’ll be his own fault again. More on that later! Hopefully this year with a little extra planning we will be starting our annual rock climbing weekend in Somerset. It’s something very close to the scouts’ hearts. Not me though - scared of heights. Imagine Boris stuck on a line only a little less ridiculous for once.

Canoeing and equipment 26

We have managed to purchase three canoes which we are adding to, with at least three more and a trailer, on the way, so we will be able to take the Scouts canoeing hopefully every fortnight on the Arun and the Wey and Arun Canal. All this is possible with the fantastic Richard Davies, Ashington explorer scouts, an experienced British Canoer who has been training up the leaders and has committed to helping us moving forward. We have many trips planned once we’re up and running with these. We will be building their skills in canoe work so that eventually they will be able to go white water rafting in the Tarn Gorge in France in 2 years

Highway robbery and star gazing and some history We have started archery training with the scouts and the leaders have been through training for this. You may have heard some woodland horn blowing and please watch out, if you find a bunch of 14 year olds in woggles and masks up on the highways relieving you of your money pouches. It’s for a good cause though! We will also be doing regular astronomy nights if anyone wants to come down with a blanket for a cup of cocoa. More on that going forward.

Time walks We are planning some time walks in the countryside, heading back in history.

Getting the taste buds tingling in the summer Last year’s proper coffee machine experiment at the summer fayre was such a success that we will be upping our game again this year with the help of the wonderful Edgecumbe coffee of Arundel, So look out for more delights in the scouts tea tent at the summer fayre 2019.

Scouts stepping up The wonderful Noah, one of ours, who does the sound for the Village Fete will be doing some disco night fundraisers for the scouts. He's a star frankly. And we are planning more fundraising drives to help pay for all of this.  The book sales  ladies, gents, and kids film nights with food for you the village,  a tool sharpening day to get your kit ready for the spring  car washing events.  And so on The scouts have been upping their axe work skills and will be preparing kindling bundles for your fires for donations. And we will be round to you in the new year collecting food for the church food bank, and we are building a sealed drop box at the hut to help with this activity. And you’ll see us all on the green going forward doing litter picking, so please help us by using the bins.

Environmental activities The scouts have decided that they want to do more for their environment so in the spirit of Sir David we are in the planning stages with organising Himalayan balsam removal with the ‘Wey and Arun Trust’ and our very own regular beach cleaning activities with ‘Surfers against Sewage’.

Some personal responsibility All the scouts will soon be able to do 5 to 10 mins defibrillation and will be proficient with the defib equipment in the village and will be passing this skill on. We would like to thank the following for their continued support  Tina Finch amd Clive Stickland from Burchetts Farm  Chris and Louise Wates from Malham Lodge  Jane and Rory Scott at Harsfold Manor  Phil Juniper from Juniper Fencing  Tim Worral from Airwave TV  Mark Ogden Meade From Mobius  Steve Calder Smith  Alice Rendel From Edgecumbe coffee

 Alan Young of Serious Child  Richard Davis From Skipton Building Society  Paul Wilman badge and the Guys at Sussex Caving  All the guys at Aurora Fireworks  The Wonderful Wisborough Green Village Store  All the parents for their help  John Nichols Photography  Sam and Ian Keywood

Any help We have some help from some very generous landowners allowing us to camp on their land. However, because we are doing a lot more camping this year, we don’t want to burden just one or two landowners who are already very generous. If there is anyone with remote land that they would be willing to allow us to camp on, we would be very grateful. It’s a very inexpensive way of getting the scouts to use and appreciate their surroundings. We have a one vehicle one trailer process with our camps and no other vehicles are allowed and aside from some flattened grass we leave the site as we find it. More to come but for now a very happy new year to all. Gareth

Christmas Tree What an outstanding success the Christmas Tree Festival was! Opening with the ‘Time for God’ service on the morning of 9th December, it ran for a week, closing with a most enjoyable evening Concert on 16 th December, organised by retiring Director of Music at St Peter’s, Malcolm Brinson. This proved to be a wonderful event in which all participants excelled. It was particularly pleasing to have representatives from the school performing, as well as the Glee Singers. The amazing total of just over 1,000 visitors passed through the doors of the Church throughout the week to witness the magical sight of some 44 trees subtly lit and beautifully and so imaginatively decorated by individuals, and representatives from village organisations and local businesses. Just over 200 attended the final concert. The result was an outstanding £4,280.72 profit, divided equally between The Sussex Snowdrop Trust and St Peter ad Vincula. A huge debt of gratitude is owed to the 52 sponsors of trees as well as to visitors to the Festival who donated so generously. The theme for decoration was ‘A Christmas Carol’ and visitors to the Festival were asked to vote for their choice of the ‘best’ or most ‘imaginatively decorated’ tree. The result was (pictures below L - R, 1st to 3rd): 1st ‘In the Bleak Mid Winter’ (decorated by: Mary Mann) 2nd ‘While Shepherds watched….’ (decorated by: Zest Hairdressers) rd 3 ‘Unto Us a Child is Born’ (decorated by: The Price Family) (Milly’s Magic Tree) 30

We would like to acknowledge, in particular, the tremendous contribution made by Annie Daniell and Peter Mann who joined us early last Summer to form the small organising committee and Phil Donoghue and Alex Lyon, who oversaw the installation of the lighting and made certain everything was safe. However, we are also so grateful to all those who sponsored trees (including the Parish Council who sponsored the projection of the Christmas tree on the Church Tower), decorated trees, stewarded, made cakes, gave the two organ recitals and one piano and violin recital during the week, sang, or were part of the two working parties who erected the trees before the Festival and cleared up so amazingly efficiently on the Monday following it. The result is reward in itself for all the hard work that went into mounting such a

e Festival 2018 massive undertaking and so, a huge ‘THANK YOU’ to you all – it was a real team effort. A further reflection of the success of the Festival must surely be that, in the days that followed, disappointed people, who had heard about the event, visited the Church but were, sadly, too late to witness it. Jamie Daniell and Richard Parish (Churchwardens)

Recipe of the Month TARTIFLETTE My suggestion for this month is ‘Tartiflette’, which is similar to Potato Dauphinoise with a few additions! This French-style cheesy potato bake is particularly delicious after vigorous exercise in the snow, like skiing or tobogganing and when you need to replace some calories!!

Ingredients (serves approx. 4)        

1kg/2 lb 4 oz Charlotte potatoes, peeled 250g/8 oz bacon lardons 2 shallots, thinly sliced 1 garlic clove, crushed 100ml/3.5 fl oz white wine 200ml/7 fl oz double cream Sea salt & freshly ground black pepper 1 whole Reblochon cheese (about 450g/1 lb), sliced

Method 1. 2. 3. 4.

Preheat oven to 200 C/400 F/Gas 7. Cook the potatoes in a saucepan of boiling water for 5-10 minutes, or until tender. Drain and set aside to cool slightly. Meanwhile, heat a frying pan until hot and fry the bacon, shallots and garlic for 4-5 minutes or until golden-brown. Deglaze the pan with the white wine and continue to cook until most of the liquid has 33 evaporated. 5. Slice the potatoes thinly and layer into an ovenproof gratin dish with the bacon mixture. Pour over the double cream. Season with salt and lots of black pepper. Layer the Reblochon cheese slices on top. 6. Bake in the oven for 10-15 minutes or until the cheese is golden-brown and bubbling. (Recipe courtesy of The Hairy Bikers) Judie Donovan

Wisborough Green History - THE Following the opening of the canal to Newbridge, last month’s issue described the details of the wharves and other facilities that existed there. THE BOATS The boats used were flat bottomed wooden barges that were of shallow draught that enabled them to traverse the shallow waters of the river and canal and typically carried a load of 25 tons although the actual load carried was more related to the depth of the water which in turn was dependent on recent local rainfall. There were two types of barge, those with sails and those without. Those with sails were spritsail barges that were a smaller version of the famous Thames sailing barges. The name comes from the diagonal spar attached to the main mast and the sail attached to it. Its main 36 advantages were that it gave a larger area of sail on a short mast and that it removed the need to have a horizontal boom that would get in the way on a working boat. The use of sails enabled the barge to travel quickly and was the most flexible option on the tidal part of the river, i.e. from Littlehampton as far as Houghton (near Amberley) because towing by horse wasn’t possible as that part of the river didn’t then have towpaths that would have enabled horse haulage and punting a barge (see below) could only occur when the tide was in the required direction. Most spritsail barges couldn’t use the canal as the mast and sprit were much too high to pass under the canal bridges; however, some of the barges had a collapsible main mast that made the barge look more conventional when folded down. The other types of barge were not equipped with sails so that they were able to pass easily under the canal bridges; these were the only types of barge that were to be seen at the wharf at Newbridge. They relied upon a horse to pull them along the canal. However, without sails they had difficulty passing along the tidal part of the river as there was no towpath along which horses could haul the barge. Their method of travel on the tidal part was to wait for the tide to flow in the right direction and then for the bargee to punt the boat with a long barge pole to help keep it away from the river bank. This required a lot skill as the barge could run out of control.

E WEY AND ARUN CANAL (Part 4) CANAL MANIA The early stages of the Industrial Revolution resulted in canals being built between the major centres of the country, e.g. between the Thames and Severn, the Trent and Mersey and, specifically, London and Liverpool. The canals had been built because it was realised that they created greater prosperity because of the cheaper transport of coal, ores and general merchandise. Soon after the opening of the Arun Navigation Canal in 1790, the canal era entered its second phase with what was to become known as Canal Mania when around fifty new canals were proposed. However, a series of false expectations and inadequate surveys caused several companies to run short of capital and those canal schemes were abandoned This was compounded by the Napoleonic Wars of 1793 that brought a financial crisis and sense of realism that added to the decline of canal development. There was just one further canal development in West Sussex during this period. This was the Rother Navigation that was completed in 1794 and ran from just south of 37 Stopham Bridge to Midhurst with a branch to serve Petworth than ran from near Coultershaw Bridge. It was built to import coal and export lead, corn and Petworth marble. There were several canals proposed for this area that were never built. One of these would have extended the Arun Navigation from Orfold lock through Wisborough Green to terminate at Fisher Street, Northchapel. It was suspected that its intention was to transport the marble found in Kirdford and Northchapel. In 1792, another proposed plan was to extend the Arun Navigation canal from Newbridge to Farthing Bridge close to Horsham. It was thought that it would bring much trade and commerce to the town, however, it became impossible to reach an agreement and so the plan was dropped. By 1800, railways were being considered as an alternative to waterways. Railways were already in use in a very crude form for short distances using horse drawn wagons running on cast iron rails or linked metal plates such that when inland transport from London to Portsmouth was being considered, one proposal was for an extension of the Surrey Iron Railway that opened in 1803 instead of extending the canal from Croydon that was then under construction. By 1810 all schemes to link London and Portsmouth had been abandoned, but the ambition was still there and so thoughts turned to the simpler solution of linking the Wey and Arun rivers. To be continued next month. (Richard B) The photos above were all taken circa 1900 and are copied from the excellent canal books by P A L Vine. Although out of the period described, they are typical of the barges used a century earlier. They show sailing barges on the Arun near Pulborough and Arundel and a barge at Stopham with its mast and sail stowed away.

A new book from a local first time author. Missing, The Wartime Account of Two Brothers A book about two brothers from Mannings Heath has just been launched. Written by David James Parker, It concerns the stories of Harry and William Warman. Harry was in the Royal Air Force, flying Bristol Blenheim bombers from the outbreak of the Second World War. A pre-war airman, having joined the RAF in 1936, he was flying operations over the North Sea on anti-shipping patrols, he took part in the Norway campaign, flying from Lossiemouth and finally operating over France and the Low Countries, covering the retreat to Dunkirk. Harry was shot down and killed on the 27th of May 1940. William was a regular soldier, having joined the Royal Artillery in 1930. After serving in Hong Kong and Aden he was posted to Singapore in 1939. Captured at the fall of Singapore on the 15th of February 1942 and after a few months in prison camps on the island he was a member of a party of prisoners taken to Ballale as forced labour. With the Allies closing in and their work finished the Japanese killed the remainder of the prisoners, some having been killed in air raids and some dying of disease. David has also mentioned other people who were involved in this story, their cousin Harry Jones being one of these. Horsham’s first casualty in the Second World War. The author has researched this over a number of years meeting up with people that knew the brothers along with a couple of family members. Not only is this a war story, it is very much a human story. David is a chimney sweep, working around the Horsham area. This is his first venture into writing, apart from a few magazine articles. He has been interested in history from a young age. His interest was fuelled by the history teachers at Forest Boys School. David‘s interest in these two brothers stems from being given Harry’s RAF mess tunic by Miss May Oakey, former teacher at Lower Beeding who had adopted Harry in the 1920’s. Fifteen years later he ended up with Harry’s medals and a discharge certificate which gave him the key to start unlocking the story. David is also becoming known for giving talks about the First World War, Second World War Home Front and his life as a sweep. Published by Redshank Books this can be ordered on line direct from Libri Publishing at www.libripublishing.co.uk. Also available from local book shops and Horsham Museum. Priced £9.99

Neighbourhood Watch - Crime News & Advice HM Revenue and Customs Alert What you need to know Action Fraud has experienced an increase in the reporting of malicious calls, voicemails, text messages or emails to members of the public purporting to be from HMRC. The fraudsters state that as a result of their non-payment of tax or other duty, the victim is liable to prosecution or other legal proceedings such as repossession of belongings to settle the balance but can avoid this by arranging for payment to be made immediately by method such as bank transfer or by iTunes gift cards. If the victim is hesitant or refuses to comply, the suspect makes a threat such as immediate arrest, bailiffs or, in cases where the victim appears to be of overseas origin, deportation. Often, the period for which the tax is allegedly due is distant enough to guarantee the victim will have little, if any, paperwork or ability to verify the claims. Once the money is paid the suspects sever all contact. It is vital that the public exercise caution when receiving messages or telephone calls of this nature.

What you need to do Always question unsolicited requests for your personal or financial information. Just because someone knows your basic details (such as your name and contact details), it doesn't mean they are genuine. Instead, contact the company directly using trusted methods such as a known email address or phone number. Listen to your instincts. If something feels wrong then it is usually right to question it. No genuine organisation will ask you to pay taxes, bills or fees using iTunes Gift Cards, or any other type of voucher. 41 Don’t be rushed or pressured into making a decision. Under no circumstances would a genuine bank or some other trusted organisation force you to make a financial transaction on the spot. Report Phishing attempts. The Gardener’s Calendar

by Ian Clemens

 Any dormant fuchsias that you’ve over-wintered in the greenhouse can be put on the staging so that they are in full light and given a misting of water to encourage them to start wakening up.  This is your last chance to winter prune that wisteria. Really!  Check stored dahlia tubers, discarding any that have rotted. Move the tubers into a light, warm place and they’ll soon come into growth.  Start planning this year’s bedding display. Time to plant antirrhinums, marigolds, begonias, cosmos, lobelia petunias and pansies from seed.  Hopefully you’ve been saving egg boxes to use for chitting your seed potatoes. If not then a seed tray or similar will do. Chit them now for planting from mid-March onwards.  Sow windowsill crops of salad leaves and herbs.  Start planting Broad Beans, Brassicas, Carrots, Parsnips and onions.  Indoors sowing of tomatoes, cucumbers, chillies and peppers.  Plant new fruit trees and continue to prune those that are already established. 43

Wisborough Green Horticultural Society Next Talk - “Potato Growing” by Alan Watson Monday 4th February 8pm, Wisborough Green Village Hall Should be an interesting talk covering all aspects of this humble vegetable. The potato, from the perennial Solanum tuberosum, is the world’s fourth largest food crop, following rice, wheat, and maize. The Inca Indians in Peru were the first to cultivate potatoes around 8,000 BC to 5,000 BC, so they have been around for some time! Recently the RHS outlined the trends for gardening in 2019 which included planting for climate change and the rise of houseplants. Here are some of the plants whose sales increased last year: Cacti up 34%, Peace Lilies up 23%, Orchids up 40% and Ferns up 80%!!

WI Report We began our new year with a very intellectual meeting on the 3 rd January. Ruth Isaacs directed us in a Beetle Drive! For those of you who are as unaware as I was, it is a fast die game to try to build a beetle as quickly as possible. We had a great time, as usual, and found out who were the most competitive members. Our next meeting is on the 7th February when we will be having a go at fit-step, so please bring your dancing shoes (trainers!) and be prepared to work up a sweat. See you there. All potential members are welcome. Sue Nicholls Mary Benson (President) 01403 700284

Weather Watch Wisborough Green Rainfall for the month of December was 116mm – last year 145 mm and my 12 yr average 113mm. The total rainfall for 2018 in WG was 928mm which is very close to the average of the last 12 years. Highest temperature for December in the UK was 15.9°C at Kew Gardens (London) and the coldest temp was minus 8.8°C recorded at Braemar (Aberdeenshire). For Wisborough Green the max and min was 13.7°C and minus 3.9°C respectively. The month of December was 2°C higher than average – that is why the daffodils are poking 49 their noses up in January! It is beneficial for many plants and trees to have a lengthy spell of cold weather and the Met office continues to forecast a colder snap - but put off until the end of January/ early February! FISHERS ADVENTURE FARM PARK WINS SILVER IN BEAUTIFUL SOUTH’S LARGE VISITOR ATTRACTION OF THE YEAR AWARD! Fishers Adventure Farm Park in Wisborough Green has recently been awarded ‘Silver’ in the Beautiful South ‘Large Visitor Attraction of the Year 2018’ award. The ceremony took place on 5th December at the Grand Hotel in Brighton with many of the South’s top tourist attractions and businesses in attendance. Tom Rollings, Director at Fishers commented: “We are absolutely thrilled that Fishers Farm has been chosen for this award. My parents started Fishers Farm almost 30 years ago, and I’m so proud of what they and we have achieved over this time. To be 51 recognised by The Beautiful South Awards, for the hardwork and dedication our team has devoted, means the world to us and we’re excited to see what 2019 has in store”. The Beautiful South awards, run by Tourism South East, recognise achievements in the tourism industry in the South East over the last 18 months. The Large Visitor Attraction of the Year award focuses on the quality of customer service, improvements and developments around the attraction, accessibility and innovation. Finalists picked, after independent judges visited each attraction, were invited to the Grand Hotel in Brighton for the awards ceremony where the winners for Gold, Silver and Bronze were announced. Nigel Smith, Chief Executive of Tourism South East, said, “Achieving excellence isn’t easy – it takes vision, years of commitment and a lot of hard work from talented people. All of the finalists have got these qualities in abundance. They can be proud of what they have achieved and the example they are setting for others. I was blown away last night by the sheer quality of tourism businesses we have got in the South East and how their numbers are increasing every year. Many of the winners are truly world class.” Bethany Shayler Marketing Manager, Fishers Farm Park
