Pastoral Letter After Jesus was born in Bethlehem in Judea, during the time of King Herod, Magi from the east came to Jerusalem and asked, “Where is the one who has been born King of the Jews? We saw his star when it rose and have come to worship him.” (Matthew Chapter 2 verses 1&2) “Follow The Star” is the Church of England’s Christmas advertising campaign, seeking to encourage people to remember that Christmas does not end on Boxing Day, but lasts for twelve days. Of course with all the advertising and the heightened expectation of the event itself, we can easily forget that Christmas begins after sunset on Christmas Eve, rather than in early November! However, it’s an interesting point to ponder, what or who do you follow? For some, a regular trip to the Amex stadium at Falmer to cheer on the Albion, or being a friend on Facebook or Instagram of a celebrity, could be more your thing, ensuring you are up to date with their concert tours, and can snap up the early bird tickets. Yet, on the 25 th December, millions across the world will join with others in Cathedrals and Churches, in corrugated mission huts or in the open air to worship Jesus, King of the Jews. The Wise Men who made the journey to Bethlehem were not disappointed, even though King Herod did his best to foil their plans. They completed their pilgrimage, and paid homage to the new King, offering gifts that represented a new dynasty, of Immanuel, God with us, that was to bring about salvation to all who would follow Him. If you would like to know more about who this Jesus is, and why so many people follow him, even in countries where being a Christian can bring a jail term, or worse. Why not join me, and others as we explore some of His claims, on the Alpha Course. We shall be offering this in the New Year, so if you are interested, and would like to come to an informal supper party on Friday 25th January at 7pm here at the Vicarage, you would be most welcome. Clive and Marion
What’s the Alpha Course? It’s a practical introduction to the Christian faith, that is based around sharing a meal together (which can be breakfast, lunch or supper, whatever time suits those who wish to do the course). We then watch a presentation and discuss some of the questions raised. The course lasts for about 12 weeks and covers topics like ‘Who is Jesus?’ ‘Why and how do I pray?’ ‘Why and how should I read the Bible?’ So if you would like to come to our introductory session ‘Is there more to life than this?’ on Friday 25th January at 7pm, when a meal will be served at The Vicarage, then please email Marion at vicarage@stpeterswg.org.uk or ring 01403 700339. For more info: https://alpha.org.uk We look forward to seeing you. Clive and Marion

Prayer Prayer Group and Quiet Mornings If anyone would like to spend half an hour in fellowship and prayer then they are most welcome on a Tuesday at 4.30pm, when prayers are said for the life of the Parish. Contact Wendy Duff on 700295 for details of venue. On the third Friday of every month Quiet Mornings are held at the home of Wendy Duff at 10.30am. It is a peaceful time when you can relax, recharge your batteries and listen to music, poetry, readings and prayers. You will come away refreshed and ready to carry on! Please contact Wendy Duff on 700295 for details.
Chain of Prayer Worried about a loved one, a friend or yourself and would like prayers to be said by a chain of people? Contact Wendy 700295 or Gillian 700157 and they will start the chain by contacting the person next to them on the list and so it goes all the way round. Prayer is a powerful and important part of life and one should never under estimate its effect. You don't need to give any details of the problem just ask for prayers to be said and it will happen. Please note that it will be treated with total confidentiality.
Prayers are offered for parishioners who are in special need, especially the sick and frail. Please advise either of the churchwardens of any persons or situations you would like remembered in this way. 6
All those living in particular roads are prayed for regularly, the whole parish being covered over a 12-week cycle: Week beginning:

Petworth Area Churches Together (PACT) - working together in harmony
Week of Prayer for Christian Unity – : the theme ‘Only Justice’ draws on the scripture Deuteronomy 16:18-20 which includes this part from New Living Translation – ‘Let true justice prevail, so you may live and occupy the land that the Lord your God is giving you’. This is about demonstrating the kingdom justice that comes about when we listen to God’s heart for the people and situations around us, and living in the fullness of life that is only found when we’re in line with His spirit. Sunday 20th January at 3pm at St Giles church, Graffham GU28 0NJ for the opening ecumenical service. All welcome in this lovely church. Refreshments afterwards. From Monday to Friday 21st-25th January at 1pm at the United Reformed Church in Petworth for the lunchtime sessions with 30 minutes of reflection/prayer followed by soup and rolls. There will be a different speaker every day and lots of inspirational content to encourage us in living with kingdom justice in our hearts and minds. It will be a great opportunity to spend some time in the bible together and also get to know more faces from the Petworth area churches. Chance to escape from the office/shop for a time of spiritual intake. No need to book, just come along! For more info, the leaflet for the week can be downloaded from : https://ctbi.org.uk/wp-content/uploads/2018/09/WPCU-2019-English-pamphlet-for-web.pdf Kate & Karl Ayling

From the Editor A warm welcome to the December 2018 edition of Ad Vincula. Well, another year nears to a close - time seems to fly by these days. I would just like to say a big thank you to our fantastic team of hard working volunteers. Without them, there would be no magazine. Fran Wallace managed to persuade the majority of our advertisers to renew for 2018 and attracted some new ones which meant we started the year with the same number of pages that we finished 2017 with - 56! Towards the end of the year, following a flurry of new advertisers, we were forced to increase the number of pages to the current 60. Recently, she has been working hard on retaining our existing advertisers and seeking new ones for 2019. We need to remember that, without our advertisers, there would be no free full colour magazine so please support them whenever you can. Our Distribution Coordinator, John Gough, has continued to do a marvellous job in coordinating the many “deliverers”, finding new volunteers when needed. Again, without all our willing volunteer deliverers, who trudge the streets in all weathers to bring your magazine to your door, we could not have a free magazine. I offer a tremendous thank you to them all. Finally, a big thank you to Roger Moody who still manages the postal distribution of the magazine to those no longer living in the village but who, nevertheless, like to stay in touch. Roger also makes sure the village shop and the café are suitably stocked with magazines and has recently taken over some of my distribution to local businesses. Thank you for that, Roger. 9 December highlights: Obituary for Peter Edmonds who sadly died in October (p13) A new venture “Singing For Fun” at Wyatt House - open to all (p21) St Peter’s Christmas Tree Festival starting 9 December (p28,29&31) Armistice 100 seems to have caught the imagination of many this year. See letter below and articles on p32-35 I hope you will find something of interest and do please keep all your articles, comments and photos coming to me at editor@stpeterswg.org.uk. PLEASE NOTE earlier deadline next month of 8 December due to having to get the printing done before the Christmas break. I wish you all a very Happy Christmas. Letters to the Editor Sir May I take advantage of your pages to express my appreciation of the thorough & painstaking research by Andrew Strudwick & the Wisborough Green Village History Society in producing the moving & excellent ‘Wisborough Green 22’? Wisborough Green Primary School News As usual, this term has flown by! It has been another autumn full of fun, colour and excitement! We were delighted to win three gold medals in the locality cross country competition. Our children ran with skill, determination and every child finished their race. We were the proud winners of many categories once again - well done to all the children who took part and showed great sportsmanship. Our year 5 and 6 children took part in two football tournaments organised by Brighton and Hove Albion, as part of their community work. The newly formed teams played brilliantly, each winning a game, against very experienced teams. Training takes place every week during lunch time, with our Albion coaches and school staff, in preparation for future inter-school matches. Our Enterprise Team thoroughly enjoyed themselves at The Amex and the judges commended the children on their c ollabor ative s k ills and s uper b creativity. The children had to design a new football stadium fit for the future, carry out some complicated maths calculations and persevere to finish the challenge in the set time! Well done team WGPS, we are very proud of you.

Being creative thinkers, so we really can make a difference to the future of our world, is vital in our ever changing society. Every year we work with 7 Billion Ideas to develop a new idea, product or concept that will make a difference to individuals. The Billingshurst Lions have once again helped us fund this brilliant initiative and will help us choose a team to represent us at the finals, at Wakehurst Place. I am sure there will be representatives for WGPS on Dragon's Den one day and they will change the world! Wisborough Green 22, has really made a huge impact on all the children. The History Society shared their extensive knowledge with the children during a recent church visit - thank you for helping them to really understand why we buy poppies every year. I would also like to thank the Parish Council for presenting each family with the beautiful commemorative booklets 'THERE BUT NOT THERE'. Our Remembrance service at the church was thoughtful and reflective in respect of the 100th anniversary of the signing of the Armistice. Thank you again to everyone who has been involved in making this a very poignant Remembrance. The glitter has been ordered, the carols are playing and the donkey is busy rehearsing for the Nativity! There really never is a dull moment at WGPS and we absolutely love it! Visit our website for more info: http://www.wisboroughgreenschool.org.uk or follow us on Twitter - @WGPS864

Peter John Edmonds 27 December 1935 - 10 October 2018 Peter was born in West Wickham, South East London but then moved to Bognor Regis, in West Sussex. First school was Nyetimber In Bognor Regis then he went to Midhurst grammar school when it was just a school for boys. He joined the air cadets and, at 16 years old, enlisted in the Royal Air Force. He met Hilary in Bognor Regis and married in 1957 in Bognor Regis in the Methodist Church. During his career in the RAF, he served at Tangmere, was posted to El Adem and Cyprus. He worked at the Air Ministry in London, took lessons in learning to speak Russian intensive for one year and then worked in Moscow for 18 months. He was commissioned on returning to England and served in Scotland, Swinderby, training recruits, and Germany, as housing officer. He left the Royal Air Force in 1974. In Moscow, his love of the Bolshoi Ballet and Tchaikovsky led to a lifetime of discovery of so much music for all the family. In Swinderby in Lincolnshire, Peter 13 was known as Ed Peters when he was the disc jockey for the RAF radio station! Peter and Hilary and family came to Wisborough Green in 1973. After leaving the RAF, Peter briefly worked for CJB Earl and Wright until he was made redundant in 1978 just when two of his daughters were about to get married within 3 months of each other! Then from 1978 until he retired in 2000 Peter worked at the Institute of Road Transport Engineers in Cromwell Road in South Kensington. Commuting to London for 26 years gave him the opportunity on the train to learn scripts for Kirdford Players, write scripts and music for his plays and to do research for so many of his interests, not to mention completing the telegraph crossword! When the family came to Wisborough Green in 1973, “fracking” had probably never been heard of. It is to Peter’s credit that so far into retirement he generously gave endless time, commitment and effort to ensuring no drilling would occur here on his watch. His interests included music, cricket, bird watching, star gazing, photography, computing, choral singing, plays in church, the Spitfire Simulator, aviation in general and his family. He was a founder member of Billingshurst Choral Society, a long time member of the Church PCC and St Peter’s Church choir. His productions in church of “Hill by the Water Meadow” and “Ruth” will be fondly remembered by many. Hilary and all her family thank everyone for their overwhelming kindness and support over the last few weeks. For all the cards, letters, flowers, telephone calls and delicious food, and the most wonderful visits to Peter.
St Peter’s Spon Wizzy Tots Wizzy Tots, Wisborough Green’s baby and toddler group, meets at the Village Hall every Tuesday during term time from 9.30 to 11.00 am. Xpresso is open every Friday during term time from 8.45am ‘til 11.30am in St Peter’s Church and EVERYONE is welcome! 14
Village Care Scheme The St. Peter’s Village Care Team meets regularly and its aims are to give help and support to the residents of Wisborough Green in as many ways as possible. This includes visiting people who are housebound, in hospitals or in nursing homes, and comforting those who are suffering from illness, bereavement, loneliness etc. We also provide (through the West Sussex County Council) a free library service for those who are unable to leave their homes. See next page. Each team member is responsible for looking after an area of the village, for welcoming new arrivals, and for giving friendly advice. We produce “Welcome to Wisborough Green Cards” containing useful information which are always delivered personally. When appropriate, we send out cards on the first anniversaries of Baptism and Confirmation, and for bereavements. We are always open to suggestions and new ideas to help the community. Please feel free to contact Suzanne Mosley on 01403 700946 for any enquiries.
Village Car Service The Village Car Service, a part of the St Peter’s Village Care Scheme (see above), has now been in operation for over twenty years. It provides transport to Doctor’s and Dentist’s surgeries and local hospitals on request. There is no charge for this service but donations are invited from passengers as these are ploughed back into the Team’s budget to pay petrol expenses to the volunteer drivers. The service is co-ordinated by Jennie Burr (tel:01403 700607). We have a dedicated team of drivers and are extremely grateful to them all, but always need new recruits to cover busy periods. If anyone is interested in driving for the village please contact Suzanne Mosley on 01403 700946.
nsored Activities Village Library Service for Housebound Readers This service is available for readers who are unable to leave their homes. There are large print and talking books available if required. If you would like a selection of books delivered to your home on a temporary or regular basis, please contact: Angela Craddock on 700336.
St Peter’s Luncheon Club St Peter’s Luncheon Club meets six times a year, on a Thursday, in the Wisborough Green Village Hall and is open to anyone who lives in the village or who worships at St Peter's. A twocourse lunch, accompanied by a glass of wine, costs £5.00, payable at the door. Members are reminded by telephone a week or so before the event. If you would like to become a member, please ring Hilary Edmonds on 01403 700623.
‘St Peter’s Chain Gang’

The Churchyard at St Peter’s is an historic record of successive generations, a home for funerary monuments of architectural and aesthetic excellence, a setting for the church itself and a place for reflection and prayer. As such, its maintenance is of the highest importance. To complement the regular mowing the churchyard receives throughout the year, St Peter’s Chain Gang has been formed. This working party meets every other Tuesday in the churchyard from 9.30am to 12.00 noon to carry out routine tasks aimed at keeping everything neat and tidy. Extra help is always welcome even if you can come for just part of the time. Please bring gardening tools if you are able. Malcolm Brinson As many of you will know, Malcolm Brinson is retiring as Director of Music at St Peter’s at the end of December and the last service when he will be at the organ is at 10.30am on Sunday 30th December. Malcolm has been at St Peter’s since 2010 and in those eight years has done sterling work not only as our organist but also in maintaining and developing the work of our Choir. We are very lucky to have this group of keen and loyal singers who regularly lead us in the musical side of our worship and it is much to Malcolm’s credit that we are one of the few churches in the Diocese to enjoy and benefit from such a group. Malcolm will, of course, be with us through the Christmas period most notably at the annual Carol Service at 6.00pm on Sunday 23rd December. However, we are marking his retirement with a special Advent Choral Evensong on Sunday 2 nd December commencing at 6.00pm to begin this season of preparation for Christmas. It is hoped that many of you will be able to be there on that evening. A glass of bubbly and a piece of celebratory cake will be served after the service! Many thanks Malcolm for all you have done over the past eight years and we look forward to you fulfilling your promise to return occasionally when the need arises. The Churchwardens
Village Hall News Unfortunately we are still waiting on our architect to complete the detailed drawings necessary to move to the next stage. Thus there has been no reportable progress since last month. However, I want to take this opportunity to record our grateful thanks to WG Fete Society for their generous donation to our funds which will go towards the cost of the asbestos survey that needs to be done prior to any construction work . More next month. Keith Carter, Chairman, Village Hall Management Committee

‘Dos, Don’ts, Moans & Groans’ Only one sensible moan this month and, again, it is dogs fouling on the green. It has been mentioned that a couple of the workmen from the new housing site allow their dogs to run on the green at break times and they have been seen fouling but not picking up. Please, if you see this, go and mention it to the owner; they don’t bite. I had no takers for leaf raking from my last month’s article which is a pity as the grass is still growing well and would have been a lot better had the conkers and leaves been cleared and not mown. Please keep an eye on the new village pavements and report any cracks or new growth coming through the covering. I am starting to see puddles on the paths which should be reported. One DO this month - if you happen to see Susanna Dinnage around the village make sure you congratulate her on her appointment as CEO of the Premier League. My final DO for this month is please e-mail me at kenvickery@hotmail.co.uk with anything that you feel happy or unhappy with; people do read this and take note so please help me to help the village. Thank You So Much For Joining Us! This year’s bonfire night event at Wisborough Green School was as special as ever! Aurora Fireworks provided yet another stunning display for which we are immensely grateful, and the bonfire burned as brightly as ever! We are truly thankful to all of those who came along to watch and support us, and also of course to the Davies family for use of their field, and the Lee family for helping us to build the bonfire! Due to the popularity of the event and licensing rules, tickets were sold out and we reached capacity in advance. Apologies to those that missed out, we will be looking into how we can cater for more numbers next year to make sure the whole village can enjoy it. 21

WISBOROUGH GREEN VILLAGE HISTORY SOCIETY Review of the Year 2018 This year we been pleased to welcome two new members. During the year we have received a number of documents and items for our records and are always pleased to receive more. We have received many requests for family history information. We were able to host a Canadian couple and give them a tour of the area showing them eleven places where their ancestors had lived. This threw up a puzzle as one of them had lived in the Barracks in Wisborough Green, where was it, were there soldiers living there, when and why? Research is ongoing but it looks likely to have been on the site of the old Congregational Chapel at the time of the Napoleonic wars with the troops guarding the river crossing at Green Bridge. We have had a talk about maypole dancing at the school and heard a very entertaining talk about crime and punishment on Newpound. Nicolette Francis, Pat Gierth's neice, came to talk about his life and his work designing the tapestry in the church and the village sign. We also heard about the work that went into making the tapestry. Over thirty items found by metal detectorists in the village roused a great deal of interest. The Parish and District Councils accepted the name 'Great Meadow' as an alternative to 'Bluebell Meadow' for the new housing estate. Great Meadow is the name of the site on the 1842 Tithe Map. One of our members, Andrew Strudwick, has done a great deal of research, building on work started four years ago, on the servicemen who were killed in the First World War. As a result the booklet, 'Wisborough Green 22', was published to complement the 'There But Not There' installation in the church. We have hosted visits by the Scouts, Fittleworth Beavers and children from the primary school to see the installation and to hear a talk about those who were killed in the war. If this review sounds interesting please come and join us on the second Tuesday of the month in the Committee Room at 10.30 a.m. Sue Killingbeck, Secretary

St Peter's Mission Lunch It was brilliant to welcome Rachel and Eric to our Mission lunch. Many of you know that Rachel, Eric and their children – Joseph, Lydia, Isaac and Elisha, -work with 'Youth with a Mission' in Uganda. They are staying with Dad Clive (our vicar), and Mum Marion until Christmas and it was good to see how they live in Uganda and hear about their work for Christ. We were also sharing information about Family Support Work in Sussex – and about Aegean Solidarity in Leros and Athens. Because of other crises in the world we have tended to forget the thousands of refugees marooned in Greece and the many who still make their treacherous way across the Aegean. It was amazing to raise £770 and Thank You to all who came and for your love, interest and prayers. Judy and Doris Dear Friends, Thank you so much for the donation you raised at your recent lunch. I can’t emphasise enough how thankful we are. You can be forgiven for thinking that the refugee crisis in Greece has long subsided. After all, our media seems to have forgotten all about it. Sadly this is not the case, things are just as dire. Over 60,000 people are trapped in the painfully slow asylum process. Around 18,000 of these crammed in squalid conditions in the 5 hotspot camps on the islands which are well over double capacity. Winter is fast approaching and, yet again, no preparations are being made for this. People are still arriving in Greece from Turkey, and still dying trying to reach safety. Just this week, a boat sank off turkey leaving 2 children dead and 10 people missing. A couple of weeks ago, 9 people drowned and dozens went missing following another incident off the Turkish coast. Some 23,500 people arrived by sea to Greece Jan- Sep this year alone. We remain focussed on helping to plug the many gaps in care for the vulnerable. In addition to our regular financial commitments to projects, we have just provided 3 grants and your donation has helped fund these: 1000 Euros to The Greek Council For Refugees to help pay for emergency costs such as medical supplies, wheelchairs, food vouchers, hygiene kits, food vouchers. 1,100 Euros to Cribs International to fund rent for 6 families and their small babies for a month. 1,500 Euros to Samos Volunteers to support their incredible day centre and laundry facility for the vast refugee community on the island. There are so many people in such terrible desperate situations and your support is really helping to make a massive difference. We have also been busy fundraising. Most recently we had a team of 11 running the 10 mile Great South Run in Portsmouth, and our partners in Birmingham have run a re-print of the hugely popular cook book they produced last year- (it’s a great stocking filler!) www.actionforrefugees.bigcartel.com/ Stay tuned to our Facebook page to keep up to date with our news, or visit our website and follow our news blog www.asnteamuk.org Thank you, we couldn’t do what we do without you. It’s been a really busy time for us over the last month. A huge number of generous schools and churches collected food for us at Harvest Festivals which has helped to replenish the stocks in our food bank ready for the cold winter months. We’re extremely grateful to everybody who contributed in this way. Over half term at the end of October we ran many activity days and sessions all over Sussex, including trips to Chichester Cathedral, messy play, pumpkin carving and even a sing-a-long screening of The Greatest Showman! These were all very busy. We are now looking ahead to Christmas and winter, a difficult time for most of our families. We have launched our Winter Fuel Campaign this week, encouraging those who receive a winter fuel payment from the Government but may not need it themselves to consider donating this to us. More information about the campaign can be found on our website www.familysupportwork.org. Many churches and schools hold toy services in the coming weeks, at which toys are collected for us to distribute at Christmas to our children. If you are planning a toy service, please do let us know – email admin@familysupportwork.org.uk or call the office on 01273 832963. Nikki Kerr, Director Fundraising & Marketing
St Peter’s FAIRTRADING to cease It is with mixed feelings that after ten years we have now decided to discontinue running the FAIRTRADE stall both at the Village Market and in Church. First and foremost – a huge THANK YOU to all our very loyal customers for their dedicated support of St Peter’s FAIRTRADING. We are particularly grateful to the ‘Table Sponsors’ without whom there is the distinct prospect that we would have been running at a loss. During the course of the last year, we have come to realise that the majority of our customers are now able to buy their Fair Trade items in all the major supermarkets at prices well below ours – in some cases the supermarket prices are well below the prices we have to pay our supplier! Since starting we have sourced our Fair Trade products from the same company and, as an additional service, have been able to add to our order specific items from their catalogue for our customers to save postage. Unfortunately, the minimum value of orders to qualify for free postage has now been raised to a level that we are unable to achieve so we have taken the decision to close St Peter’s FAIRTRADING with effect from the end of December 2018. PLEASE continue to support Fair Trade goods in your regular supermarket shopping. Gillian, Val and Gill
October Messy Church Our last Messy Church took place on 21 October. We heard about Lazarus who had been dead and lying in a tomb for four days but was called out by Jesus, back to life. We looked at the hope we are given of life after death through knowing Jesus. The poppy field on display in Church over the Armistice weekend was created at Messy Church, as well as the tissue paper poppies. We also made poppy biscuits, happy/sad paper plate faces and smelt some nice and nasty smells! Much fun was had banging in the nails to create a cross picture and being dressed up as a mummy with toilet paper then breaking free (representing Lazarus)!

Keep an eye out for our next Messy Church which will be in the New Year.

Armistice Sunday It was wonderful to see so many people at our service on Sunday, 11 November to commemorate the Centenary of Armistice Day. It was standing room only in Church! Especially moving was a reading by Geoffrey Venables from the personal diary of his Father, George Venables, dated 11 November 1918. By popular request, this reading is reproduced below.
32
Following the church part of the service, the congregation processed down to the War Memorial on the Green where many more joined. In all, over 300 people joined in the final part of the service which included the reading out of those to be commemorated, the laying of wreaths and the two minutes silence at 11am. This year, we really did have “silence as the Parish Council had arranged for the A272 to be closed to traffic at the appropriate time.
11 November 2018 Extracts from the personal diary of George Venables, Signaller 3 rd Battalion Coldstream Guards, read in church on Sunday 11 November 2018 by his son, Geoffrey Venables On the 11th November 1918 they were camped inland from Dieppe. It was a skeleton battalion of less than a hundred men, who had been wounded at least once, or who had survived the massacre of the Somme, the slaughter and mud of Passchendale, the thrill of the tanks at Cambrai, followed by complete disillusionment at the debacle of the 5th Army as they fell back on their left flank. Haig's order of the day read "Our backs are against the wall we must fight to the last man" Their Commanding Officer replied "We have no wall. We fight back to back". They had survived at least two severe winters of rain and snow, mud and frost, living mostly in holes in the ground, their underclothes alive with lice [one hot shower and change every two months] Each night the great rats that lived on the corpses in no man's land came to try a change of diet on their meagre rations. They were continually shelled and in daylight no man put his head over the parapet more than once On the morning of 11th November Dusty was taking a telegram on the telephone. He got into such a state of excitement that he could not take it down. "Here somebody take this" He said "I can't. It says the war's over" Venables picked up the receiver and began to write on the message pad while the others gazed over his shoulder. The message read: “Following from GHQ begins. Hostilities will cease at 1100 hrs today. Our troops will stand fast on the line reached at that hour. There will be no intercourse with the enemy of any description 33 (copy of original message right) There was no rum or beer in the camp, and no one had any money to spend at an inn two miles away so they were unable to celebrate in usual army style. In the evening they sat silently round the campfire gazing into the glowing embers without the fear of being bombed. Their thoughts found little expression in words. One after another as the fire died down they turned into their tents, rolled themselves up in their blankets and were soon asleep. They had often slept to wake up to go over the top, to hold the enemy's advance to the noise of bursting shells and bombs, or the dreaded sound of the gas alarm. Now they slept in peace to dream of home and think of their many friends, including an elder brother, who would never return. They had fought and died to win a war to end all wars and make a land fit for heroes to live in.
Weald School Remembrance The Weald School has marked the 100th anniversary of the end of World War One with a series of events including a special assembly, a garden of remembrance and a silhouette unavailing. The Community Captains erected a special garden of remembrance with one hundred poppies in memory of the 165 fallen from the Billingshurst and Pulborough area and a list of the names of these soldiers. Bea Mulder one of the Community Captains said “what is sad is that many of the names of the fallen are close to our ages, the youngest was aged just 17 years old. We learnt in History lessons that many of the young people lied to get into the army to fight with their friends from their villages.” On Friday 9th November, students from each house marched to Billingshurst train station to unveil a silhouette of a lone soldier and memorial. To mark the occasion and to support the ceremony the English department in conjunction with the History department ran a writing competition and Katie Badger (Year 9) and Toby Nicholls (Year 8) the two winners read their pieces to the local people in attendance. Henry Austin played the 'Last Post' and prayers were also led by students. Callum Heath, a school community captain, said “Billingshurst Train station is significant to the village and community and it was only fitting that a memorial was unveiled by The Weald School students, as many of the fallen would have left this station 100 years ago to never return. Callum said that “The Weald School would like to thank the train station manager, 34 the local community and the Royal British Legion in helping us make this happen." The whole school observed a minute’s silence to mark the centenary. Mr Fry said “it was amazing to see the whole school community come to a stop at 11 o’clock as the bugler played and a minutes silence was held, it was emotional and fitting given the sacrifices made."
Commemorative Altar Frontal for St Peter’s
A big Thank You to the sewing team (pictured below) for producing the wonderful Altar Frontal (also pictured below) that now adorns the Altar in the Lady Chapel at St Peter’s. It was “fitted” on 21 September and, although originally intended for unveiling for Remembrance Sunday, it was decided that, as the There But Not There installation was already in Church, it seemed appropriate to leave the Frontal in place from that day. The altar cloth will be a lasting memorial to those who departed these shores over one hundred years ago, never to return home.
Wisborough Green bell ringers took part in a countrywide project ‘Ringing Remembers’ which was to remember the 1400 ringers who perished in the First World War and which aimed to recruit 1400 new ringers who would be able to join in ringing on Remembrance Sunday this year. With our two recruits, we rang half muffled before the service as a sign of respect and then at 12.30pm we rang, without the muffles, to signify The Battle is Over! Anyone interested in learning to ring - come along on a Wednesday evening around 7.30pm when we practice.

Wisborough Green History - THE Last month I started with a short history of this country's canal system and then the difficulties of travelling in eighteenth century Sussex. The River Arun rises from a series of small streams in St Leonard's Forest which is to the east of Horsham. It passes through the town then meanders via Rudgwick to Newbridge from where it flows south to Pallingham which is the present tidal limit. Further south, it is joined by its biggest tributary, the Rother, just south of Stopham Bridge and which starts in Empshott between Selborne and Liss in Hampshire. From there the Arun flows through Pulborough and Amberley to Arundel and the English Channel at Littlehampton. It is generally considered to be navigable only south of Newbridge. Little is known about the river's early years. There's little doubt that it was partly navigable at the time of the Norman Conquest. The first major improvement to the river was made in the thirty years from the 1540s when the river from the coast to Arundel was cleared and widened so that the town became a port for sea-going ships. Until the sixteenth century no ships of any size were built at Arundel, but by 1600 the improvements made resulted in a considerable increase in trade and ship-building flourished on the eastern bank opposite the town. In addition, the river banks for that stretch were raised which reduced the widespread flooding that had 40 been common in such low lying parts. The Arundel shipbuilding yard is on the right of the illustration. Navigation to Pallingham during the Middle Ages above the then tidal limit of Houghton Bridge near Amberley was extremely slow and dangerous. The problems were caused by large shoals of fish, obstructions caused by the shallowness of the water and the need to traverse large number of flash locks. There were 14 of these between Houghton and Pulborough Bridge and a further 15 to Pallingham. They consisted of dams with a 'gate' in the middle that could be removed to allow a boat to get through. The term 'flash' referred to the flash of water that gushed through when the gate was removed. An additional problem was that most of them were in a very bad state of maintenance. Eventually this stretch of river was improved by major works around 1560 so as to enable the transport of timber on barges from Pallingham to Arundel where the cargo could be transferred onto larger ships. Much effort was made to improve the river in 1623 so as to make it more navigable even up to Newbridge where its importance grew. The Rother was also navigable at this time for the short stretch up to Fittleworth. Leave was granted in 1785 to bring in a bill that would improve the navigation above Houghton and authorise the construction of two canals. The first was between Coldwatham and Hardham which avoided the big loop via Pulborough and so shortened the distance by three miles. The second canal was between Pallingham and
E WEY AND ARUN CANAL (Part 2) Newbridge Wharf. These two canals are shown in red on the accompanying schematic map which is not to scale. Construction was expected to be complicated by the need of three locks and a 13' high tunnel at Hardham on the lower canal while the line chosen for the upper canal between Pallingham and Newbridge involved crossing the Arun by an aqueduct at Orfold and building three locks. Progress meetings were held at pubs near the Arun, viz. the Norfolk Arms in Arundel, the Swans at Fittleworth and Pulborough and just once at the Three Crowns. Construction of the upper canal proceeded quite fast so that it opened in August 1787 but progress on the lower canal stalled after money ran out. This was to be expected as in the minutes for December 1786 they admitted that "immediately after the digging to Pallingham is finished, work should begin on the cut through Hardham Hill until the money is exhausted". However, by borrowing money against the toll revenues from the upper section, the lower canal was completed in summer 1790. An interesting point, particularly in light of their heavy financial commitments, was that the canal company was prepared to lend a large amount of money to the parishes of Billingshurst, Pulborough, Slinfold and Wisborough Green to make repairs to their main roads as they were in such an atrocious state as was touched on last month. Trade on the Arun was encouraging. Despite a slow start in which 4,500 tons a year were carried, by 1791 the figure was 14,000 tons. The boats used were mainly spritsail barges (see next month) some of which could carry more than 30 tons although the actual load carried was more related to the draught that was dependent on rains rather than the tides on the upper reaches of the river. The river between Arundel and the tidal limit at Houghton remained an open navigation without a towpath. Barges either sailed or were punted up and down the river with the tide. Above Houghton, and with no tide, sail or horse power had to be used. Journeys from Littlehampton to Newbridge via the Pulborough Loop took about 2½ days though using the tunnel and the three locks saved six hours, but there was a toll to pay. (Continued next month - RB)

Boxal Bridge KKWG would like to thank all those who have contributed so far to the fund to help to retain Boxal Bridge. Funds continue to be needed. This much cherished local asset is situated on the Kirdford road, the C109. It is highly regarded by those working to safeguard heritage. Meanwhile, West Sussex Council Highways still intend to replace ie demolish the bridge. Independent highways consultants have assessed the bridge and, while it is cracked, maintain that with repair it could last another 160 years. West Sussex County Council Highways Dept will need to adhere to The 2013 Guide to the Conservation of Historic Buildings which provides information on the principles of the conservation of historic buildings and sites, and is very useful when setting conservation policy, management strategy and procedures. The standard offers good conservation guidance for how best to deal with historic buildings, based on sound research evidence and the use of competent advisors and contractors.
Government consultations on Onshore Oil & Gas The government wishes to speed up Onshore Oil & Gas developments. They are suggesting making applications for drilling for gas Permitted Development ie put them on the same basis as you putting up a garden shed and making production a Nationally Significant Infrastructure Project where the decision 43 would be made by an Inspector. Both proposed changes would omit the local planning authority and local communities. Tremors have been experienced at Newdigate in Surrey associated with drilling at Horse Hill site near Gatwick; and, as covered in the national press there have been 37 tremors in Lancashire in the 3 weeks since drilling started at Preston New Road. Geologists predicted this. The company involved in Lancashire, Cuadrilla, was not expecting them... See Channel 4 evening news on November 12 th on catch up. The Parishes Wildlife Group We are seeking further funding to complete the survey of dragon- and damselflies along the River Kird. Having surveyed the river as it runs through Wisborough Green Parish, the intention now is to employ Dr Alison Barker to undertake similar work on the part which traverses Kirdford Parish. Many thanks to the Fete Committee which has provided funding for the coming year to support meetings. These are planned to include UK Mammals by Prof. Fiona Matthews from the University of Sussex; Water voles on the Manhood Peninsula by Jane Reeve, Project manager for the FLOW project; Fixing and Linking Our Wetlands; and on habitat mapping by Bruce Middleton. Start to prune your Wisteria, climbing roses, vines and fruit trees. Leave the faded flower heads on your hydrangeas until the spring, as they will provide frost protection to the swelling buds further down the stems. Move containers of shrubs or bedding plants to a sheltered spot; clustering them together helps protect the root systems from suffering frost damage. Take hardwood cuttings from suitable trees and shrubs. Lift and divide established clumps of rhubarb to renew the plant's vigour. Remove yellowing leaves from your winter brassicas as they are no use to the plant and may harbour pests and diseases. Cover with netting to protect them from pigeons. Dig over empty borders and pile manure on top - let the worms and frosts break up the clods of soil. Apply glue bands or grease bands to the trunks of fruit trees to prevent wingless female winter moths climbing the trunks and laying their eggs in the branches. Plant raspberry canes now whilst they are dormant. Plant blueberries for an attractive addition to the fruit garden.
Festive Cruises on the Wey & Arun Canal Bookings are already being taken for the extremely popular Santa Cruises which will be running on 9th, 16th, 21st, 22nd and 23rd December. Trips depart at 11am, 12noon and 2.00pm and cost £10 per person to include festive refreshments and a gift from Santa for all children under 12 years of age. “Potato Growing” by Alan Watson Monday 5th December 8pm Wisborough Green Village Hall As usual for the December meeting we will wine and dine you with mulled wine and mince pies before the meeting – and maybe jacket potatoes (but maybe not!). Don’t forget the five stems from your garden competition – tricky in December but you are allowed evergreen stems. The “Gardeners Question Time” was well attended and an enjoyable interesting evening. Thank you to Doris Smallwood and Ian Clemens who fielded a wide range of questions: leaf miner, figs, talking to plants, parsnips, penstemons, vine weevil, glyphosate (round-up), squirrels (deter with garlic and cayenne), pot recycling (taupe is the new colour so it can be detected for recycling), plants against a wall and for dry areas were some of topics discussed. One interesting idea to get on top of black spot in roses was to spray with a fungicide in January and every two weeks till spring – include the earth around them (having picked up the leaves). Thank you to all those who asked questions –regrettably time didn’t allow for more. Maybe we will have a Question Time every year! Happy Christmas to our members as well as all gardeners – we hope you enjoyed a good year.

Weather Watch Wisborough Green Rainfall for the month of October was 65mm – last year 51 mm and my 11 yr average 86mm. November rainfall has started high at the time of writing (7th). On average November, December and January are the wettest months of the year – so be prepared! Highest temperature for October in the UK was 26.5°C at Donna Nook (Lincs) and the coldest temp was minus 8.6°C recorded at St Harmon (Powys). For Wisborough Green the max and min was 22.0°C and minus 1.6°C. For the UK as a whole it was the fifth sunniest October since 1929. I trust you noticed! Earlier in October there was talk in the press of a four month “polar vortex” giving us snowfalls and freezing temperatures. We await. Weathervane
WI Report There was almost a full house for our Annual Meeting on the 1 st November; we even had a couple of unsuspecting visitors! I think it must have been the offer of wine with the biscuits! The Committee of Judy Moorey, Dottie Smith, Ruth Isaacs, Faye Williams, Sue Nicholls, Mary Benson, Melanie Roberts and Christine Serna were all re-elected and, out of that motley bunch, Mary Benson was reelected as President for the next year. Congratulations Mary. We followed on after the business section of the meeting with a very light-hearted quiz. On the 30th October a small but beautifully marked group of members visited the Viridor Recycling Unit at Ford hoping to learn more about the recycling workings of this District. I think we all came away with a little more knowledge about the workings of the unit and marvelled at how good we looked in high viz jackets and safety helmets! Our next meeting will be on the 6th December when it will be our Christmas Party. This 53 year’s is slightly different in that as it’s obviously in the middle of winter we are having a Punch & Judy Show, Oh yes we are! We have decided that we will not be having the usual food, only mince pies, tea & coffee & mulled wine. Please don’t forget to bring a wrapped present up to the value of £5 to go into the secret Santa raffle. All potential members are welcome. Sue Nicholls Mary Benson (President) 01403 700284
