Pastoral Letter Greater love has no one than this; than to lay down one’s life for one’s friends. (John 15:13) This year’s Remembrance commemorations will no doubt reflect the events of 75 years ago, when in the summer of 1940 the R.A.F. was able to blunt the attacks of the German air force, the Luftwaffe, and so deny them the freedom of the skies that the Nazi High Command required for a possible invasion. There have been many interviews with those of the ‘Few’ still alive, as Sir Winston Churchill, the then Prime Minister, called the pilots of Fighter Command. One of the things that struck me in the interviews and documentaries was the importance of a shared task done in such a manner that the pilots involved, were drawn together, not just as fellow combatants, but as comrades and friends. That sense of trust and reliance on those who would be flying alongside each other, made a special bond, sadly often broken with the loss of a fellow pilot. Yet time and time again the airmen would answer the ‘alarm bell’ to scramble and intercept the enemy over the skies of Southern England. Even today we can be mindful of the men and women of the armed services and particularly the R.A.F. who monitor the skies above us, thus ensuring our safety and the safety of those who travel over the UK. We may no longer be facing an invasion threat as in 1940, but there are those who would wish to do us harm through acts of violence and terrorism. We need therefore to be thankful that still today there are those who are willing to maintain that same spirit of defiance to ensure these shores remain free from oppression in whatever form it takes. Clive and Marion BISHOP RICHARD WRITES….

REMEMBRANCE – dying – that others may live in freedom One of my churchwardens in my last parish produced an exhibition, borne of many hours of research, on the lives of the men on the Roll of Honour. His graphic design skills brought them vividly to life. There were photos; maps showing where they had lived; entries in the baptismal register and records from the school discipline book – they weren’t all angels! Alongside were records of the actions where they lost their lives and poignant photos. Photos of proud men off to serve their country, often snapped shortly before they died. Articles from the parish magazine of the 20’s recorded the ‘gentle weeping’ as the names were read out at the annual Remembrance Day service. At that point they were more than names. They were sons, daughters, husbands and fathers. No family was unaffected. There are 33 names on the WWI Roll of Honour at a time when the population of the village was about 600. The same surnames are repeated, perhaps more tragically when they appear again in the next war just over 20 years later. (Continued on page 6)

5

(Continued from page 5)

BISHOP RICHARD WRITES….(Cont) We continue quite rightly to keep their names alive, for as someone once said, “Those who do not learn the lessons of history are condemned to repeat its mistakes.” However, these men and women are much more than names on a board. Even though all the WWI veterans are gone and the brave band from WW2 diminishes year by year; even though for young people these events fade into history rather than experience, they bring into focus a great truth of the Christian faith. Jesus said to his disciples, “Even the hairs on your head are numbered.” He invites us to call God, Father. Those whose remains are unidentified have graves marked: A soldier known unto God. We, like them are known unto God. Known personally and valued infinitely. They died for their country and an ideal, fighting against tyranny. Jesus died for us, that the knowledge God has of us can become a lived experience of restored relationship, sins forgiven and new life. +RICHARD

Prayer Chain of Prayer Worried about a loved one, a friend or yourself and would like prayers to be said by a chain of people? Contact Wendy 700295 or Gillian 700157 and they will start the chain by contacting the person next to them on the list and so it goes all the way round. A copy of the chain is on the notice board at the back of church. Prayer is a powerful and important part of life and one should never under estimate its effect. You don't need to give any details of the problem just ask for prayers to be said and it will happen. Please note that it will be treated with total confidentiality.

Prayers are offered for parishioners who are in special need, especially the sick and frail. Please advise either of the churchwardens of any persons or situations you would like remembered in this way. All those living in particular roads are prayed for regularly, the whole parish being covered over a 12-week cycle: Week beginning:

From the Editor Welcome to the November edition of Ad Vincula. The big theme this month is, of course, Remembrance as evidenced by the vicar’s Pastoral Letter, Bishop Richard’s letter to Parishes (p5) and the Royal British Legion’s Poppy Appeal (p21). Do please join us on Sunday 8 November in church for the Service of Remembrance at 10am and at the War Memorial at 11am. In addition to the usual articles, this month we have a plea for a new Youth Leader and Assistant Youth Worker (p15), an update on Boxal Bridge after WSCC full Council Meeting (p15), a plea for two new members for the Village Hall Committee and AGM Notice (p19), information on the Advent Christmas Tree Festival (p21), an article about the bright future being planned for WG Cricket Club (p22), a request for volunteers to help with Family Support Work (p33) and a request for any bedding or warm clothes for the Open House Homeless Shelter in Crawley. Also, please note that the Roger Moorey Memorial Concert has had to be postponed (p29). Finally, don’t forget the School Bonfire Night on Friday 6 November (p24). I would love to hear from you with any comments, suggestions, etc. Best wishes, Roland Zilz This magazine can also be viewed on line at: http://www.wisboroughgreenparishchurch.org.uk/index.php/parish-magazine

Harvest Festival 2015 DAHLIAS GALORE Harvest Festival is a time to remember " all God's gifts" and what better way to do this than to decorate the Church with the flowers and produce that have been grown locally. Once again we are so very grateful to Reg Snelgar for his most welcomed gift of dahlias for our harvest flower arrangements. The blooms with their spiky petals and bold colours are the perfect foil for the autumnal tones of the foliage and with the able assistance of our team of flower arrangers the buckets of dahlias were soon transformed into stunning displays. As always a very big thank you to Reg for his generosity. Maggie Edwards

HARVEST AUCTION The Harvest Auction, held in the Cricketers pub, was started off with Clive Jenkins our new vicar pulling a pint and then everyone singing the hymn 'We plough the fields and scatter'. John Farmer did his usual splendid job as Auctioneer, encouraging bids for all the produce given by villagers and the congregation at the Harvest church service that morning. In Wisborough Green we really do have the most expensive pickled onions in the world! Thank you to everyone who so generously contributed to the evening where a total of £600 was raised for the Elliott Charity. This charity was set up many years ago to help people, who are in need financially and who live in Wisborough Green. Helen V 11

Wey & Arun Canal Trust MAJOR ADVANCE FOR CANAL RESTORATION The restoration of a canal in Surrey has taken a significant step forward with the signing of a land lease. With this agreement, the Wey & Arun Canal Trust (WACT) can re-create 400 metres of the waterway’s Bramley Link section, south of Guildford. The long lease is for farmland owned by Trust supporters Susan and Malcolm Brenton. It will enable a stretch of the canal from Shalford down to the Tannery Lane Bridge near Bramley to be restored.

Susan and Malcolm Brenton

Mrs Brenton commented at the signing ceremony that she first came across WACT when she saw its plans at consultation sessions run by the Trust for Bramley people in 2004. “Our lower field was shown as a possible route, so that raised our interest level,” she said. “We have always been keen supporters of the Trust and are very happy to sign this lease.”

Mr Brenton added that the key word in the lease negotiations was ‘trust’. He felt there was a solid understanding on the part of both parties on how to get the restoration work done. A year-long environmental impact assessment is being carried out on phase one of the Bramley Link, from the River Wey at Shalford down to the Gosden Aqueduct over the Cranleigh Waters stream. Also under way for this phase are a civil engineering design study and a full flood study. Mr Oliver said the three studies will support a planning application expected to be made in summer 2016. WACT has so far carried out work on more than half of the 23-mile Wey & Arun Canal route, from Pallingham in West Sussex to Shalford. It has restored three-and-a-half miles to full navigation in the Loxwood area, where it runs public excursion boats. The first fully restored section in Surrey, on the Summit Level between Alfold and Dunsfold, is due to open in September 2016. The Trust is currently replacing a concrete causeway in the middle of this stretch with a new bridge. 12

Nature Notes If you came down our lane at the end of October, you might have walked over a carpet of fine light brown powder. Acorns - I don’t remember seeing so many crushed on the road in all the time we’ve been here! And there was the constant sound of them bouncing off cars, sheds, even people, as they fell. There’s also been a plethora of conkers, all of them beautifully round and shiny. Fruit and nuts everywhere this year – hooray. Talking of plethoras, (ok - lots! just showing off a bit!) at the moment our house seems full of ladybirds. The sunny weather has brought them out again, wandering over the windows and basking on our pale rendered walls. I’m not sure if they’re all natives, but they are delightful to watch whatever their origin. In the fields, cinnabar hawk moth caterpillars are still munching on the ragwort, and we’ve seen slender blue damsels and Reddish-brown dragonflies over the ponds. A friend came across about 200 martins roosting in Flexham quarry last week. To his surprise they stayed at least two days, so perhaps a good number of insects about. And we’ve got linnets, wagtails and extra chaffinches around now too. Grebes have done well this year at Burton Mill Ponds and a hobby has been hunting there too. The Ponds are open to anyone and well worth a visit. It’s a very peaceful place for a wander and they serve good tea in the Mill Café! A lesser spotted woodpecker is rumoured to be visible there in early spring, a real treat. They’re about as big as a robin, with the distinctive black, white and red markings of their larger relative. I’d love to see one in the flesh (feather?) as I was mistaken about a garden sighting a few years ago. Back in July several of us had a fascinating outing to South Pond in Midhurst looking for Moths. Local experts, Penny and Dave Green, were doubtful they’d catch many due to the weather, but we saw a small assortment of moths in their light trap. As it got colder they moved the trap to a nearby garden in hopes of finding a few more. They need not have worried! In the morning there was an amazing variety of moths, lurking on egg trays, or snoozing in the big bowl of the trap. They can recognise and name them after a single glance, really fantastic knowledge. We were treated to all shapes, sizes and colours. An elephant hawk moth – very Elephant Hawk Moth impressive! And a peppered moth I think - a master of disguise, as Dave showed us by placing it on a tree trunk to see who could spot it! And many more! As they all began to warm up, one by one they flew off. So, a whole new world of creatures opens up. I’ve bought a book about them, and I definitely want another outing! This is the last Notes till the Spring, so Seasons Greetings and Happy Wildlife Watching! Peppered Moth

Youth Leader required Wisborough Green Youth Club We are looking for an enthusiastic and motivational individual to work with young people in our community. Although previous youth work experience is not essential, the successful candidate must be able to demonstrate a clear understanding of the issues that face young people in our community, have a participative and inclusive style of communication and an ability to encourage and empower young people. The Youth Club meets in the village Hall on three Thursdays each month during school time. The youth worker will be required to work from 6 until 9pm, with some further preparation, administration and training time to be agreed. We currently have around 20 young people attending on a regular basis and also employ an assistant youth worker to help with running the sessions. The salary is ÂŁ9.68 per hour. This is initially a contract offered for the rest of this educational year, finishing at the end of July 2016 with a view to extending it should demand and funding permit. The Youth Club is affiliated to WSCC Youth Service which offers training, support and CRB checks. In addition, the Youth Leader will be supported by the youth club management committee. We are also looking to appoint a new Assistant Youth Worker to help with the running of the club. This person will be expected to work between 6 & 9pm on the evenings that the Youth Club runs as is paid ÂŁ20 per session. Please email your CV and a covering letter setting out why you are interested in either post to Mike King, Management Committee Chair at mnking23@gmail.com

Closing date for applications is Friday 13th November 2015

KKWG Update on Boxal Bridge Peter Mann, local resident, presented the case for Boxal Bridge when WSCC discussed the issue at their full Council meeting on 16th October. Unfortunately the webcast was unavailable. The Councillors who spoke agreed with the petition, supported the case made by the villages and did not want it to be demolished. Mrs Amanda Jupp then suggested a resolution calling on the Highways Dept to work with both Parishes to ensure that a satisfactory solution can be reached. This was unanimously adopted with one abstention. During the debate John O'Brien, Cabinet lead on Transport and Highways indicated he would make the decision once he had all the necessary information. The resolution passed by WSCC pointed to the way forward involving a group consisting of representatives from WSCC Highways Dept, the two Parishes plus John O'Brien to devise a sensible plan. Best wishes, Jill Dr Jill Sutcliffe, Chair KKWG, 01403 700395 15

Wisborough Green Primary School News It certainly has been a busy term for us at school and we have enjoyed so many fun learning experiences already. Some of the highlights for me have been:  Harvest Festival - after a very mature celebration at the church, led by Year 6, we all enjoyed homemade soup and bread back in school. The children loved sharing the food they had prepared with so many parents and it was a special afternoon for us all.  Meet and Greet - it was good to see so many parents at my formal welcome meetings and I found these sessions very useful and a good opportunity to discuss ideas for the future of our school.  Democracy day - we all dressed in red, white and blue for a day of democratic voting. The children presented their speeches for the positions of 'School Councillor' and 'Eco Warrior' and everyone had a secret vote. Children in Year 3 were even comparing the Roman Empire to Parliament of today. I wonder which they prefer?  Greek Day - we do love to cook at school and the Greek delights made by Year 5 and 6 children were amazing! Thank you to the brilliant team of parent helpers for your support.  Buddy time - welcoming our new Reception children to school and has been made easy as they have been so well supported by the Year 5 Buddies. The children have shown how kind and caring they can be and are always around to help the younger ones with their lunch and to play with them outside. Thank you Year 5.  PTA - I attended my first meeting and an AGM and have been so impressed with the commitment and drive from this group of parents to support the school. The money that has been raised over the past year is an incredible £13 500 and this will enable us to purchase so many new resources for the children. Thank you to everyone for your contributions. Let's see if we can beat this amount over the next year!  Marvellous Maths - we are having a whole school focus on improving mathematical skills to solve problems and it has been great to see the children enjoying being maths detectives in their lessons and having fun. There are so many more wonderful learning experiences still to share with you and lots we are looking forward to next half term. Wisborough Green Primary School really is a great place to learn the skills for life for future success and a place where I want all learners to recognise their self worth and to unlock individual talents. Advent Christmas Tree Festival 5th-13th December Many of you will remember the Advent Tree festivals we held in 2011 and 2013 which were so successful in raising funds to help Chestnut Tree Children’s Hospice and our Church. Planning is now well underway for what should be another wonderful festival this year when the Church will be filled again for a few days from Saturday 5 th to Sunday 13th December with beautifully decorated and lit Christmas trees. The theme for decorating the trees this year will be Carols and Stars. The money raised will again be divided between Chestnut Tree Children’s Hospice and the St Peter ad Vincula building fund. We will be approaching those who kindly sponsored trees in previous years to help us again but if you would like to sponsor a tree and/or are willing to decorate a tree on behalf of a group or individual please contact Andrea or Graham Parr (01403 700793) as soon as possible. As many of you will remember from last time we will need to borrow as many tree stands as possible so if you are able to lend us one for the festival please leave it in Church as soon as you can (clearly marked with your name and phone number!) and we promise that it will be available for you again immediately after the festival. Further details of the opening times etc. will follow in the December issue of Ad Vincula! Thank you in anticipation for all your support. Graham Parr

THE ROYAL BRITISH LEGION POPPY APPEAL 2015 Remembrance Day this year will be celebrated on Sunday 8th November. As usual the village will be subjected to a fairly intensive fund raising effort in the days leading up to the ceremony. House to house collectors are already at work and commercial properties have poppies and the collecting boxes. The street collection outside Wisborough Green Stores will be on Saturday 7th Nov. Our village always does well, raising in excess of £1500 last year. Please support our armed forces again this year. they are still exposed to risk in many overseas operations and are stretched to the limit, creating stress both at work and in family life. The RBL together with other dedicated charities are very involved in all aspects of care and recovery for both the Service personnel and their families. Your contribution will help. Thank you. Wisborough Green Cricket Club planning for a bright future With the season over, the Rugby World Cup over the back pages of the newspaper and the re-emergence of winter jumpers and wellies it is obviously the perfect time to drop a line about cricket. The cricket club is actively planning for next season, and I thought I should share some of the exciting plans with you and maybe you will see that there is an opportunity for you to get out the linseed oil and get involved with the game again. The committee has set itself the target of increasing participation in the sport on the green, particularly with respect to teenage cricket and senior cricket. With this in mind there are a number of plans afoot. Firstly, we need to be able to increase the ability to practice cricket and I am pleased to say that the committee has managed to secure a grant that will enable it to buy more equipment, fund more coaching and coaches and equally importantly segregate the green and Collards field with protective netting to prevent balls flying from one part of the green to another; which should allow greater use of the nets whilst other sport is being played on the green. We have also raised sufficient funding to develop the net area to produce a better batting and bowling surface, move from one net lane to two, and thereby support more training on key skills of batting and bowling. This is fantastic news and we are aiming for these to be in place at the start of next season. Many thanks to all involved in enabling this to happen. Next season, the senior team will play in the West Sussex League 1, and there is hope that we can perform well and climb back up into the County League. The second X1 will now be placed into this league structure and have opted to go for a league in which the games have been shorter than in the past, which will hopefully encourage greater participation, with 80 over rather than 100 over matches the norm. We are reviewing Sunday Cricket and would like to see the following on the 18 or so Sundays we have available to us. (Continued on page 23)

(Continued from page 22)

 4 or so games against our sponsors – these will be played under a Wisborough Green “occasionals” banner and the idea is that those of you who would like to play a couple of times a season would express your interest and be involved in a friendly 25 to 35 per side match. Please contact me on steve@is-healthgroup.co.uk if this sounds like your cup of tea  We would like to play one or two veterans games with a combinations of over 50s and under 13s – exact ages and numbers to be agreed where the focus is on social cricket – again please let me know if the idea of sharing a glass or two and playing a Sunday game would appeal – I know there are a few of you who still hang onto the old kit bag and it would be great to get this going  We will also hope to be able to start ladies cricket – again we will be looking to arrange a couple of fixtures on a Sunday if there is enough interest, please let me know if you are interested and if there is enough interest we can ensure practice and a couple of friendly matches. Coaching will be supplied  There will be one or two more formal matches against long standing rivals and maybe a 6 a side competition Excitingly, we are in conversation with Phil de Freitas (ex England) and are trying to organise a match against his team which hopefully will be a little like the Lashings game a few seasons ago without the rain. We hope to have positive news on this shortly. With a large junior section and increasing commitment to more one to one coaching we hope the junior section will continue to thrive with enjoyable Friday evenings, lots of colts matches and more and more youngsters playing senior cricket on either Saturday or Sunday next year. We will cover this more in a future report. I know next season seems a long way off but please get in contact if you are interested in participating in any of the above next year. We are planning but this will be to no avail without participation. Steve Calder-Smith Chairman

Recipe of the Month Roasted squash risotto with Wensleydale By James Martin, courtesy of Good Food Magazine A creamy bowl of autumnal comfort makes the perfect vegetarian dinner party dish Ingredients  about 1kg/2lb 4oz peeled, deseeded squash, cubed  1 tbsp olive oil  handful pumpkin seeds  1 onion, chopped  1 garlic clove, crushed  25g butter  300g risotto rice  150ml white wine  1.2l hot vegetable stock  100g Wensleydale cheese or vegetarian alternative, crumbled  small bunch chives, snipped Method 1. Heat oven to 200C/180C fan/gas 6. Toss the squash in the oil in a roasting tin and roast for 15-20 mins until tender and golden. With 4-5 mins to go, toss the pumpkin seeds with a little salt, make a little space amongst the squash and spread out the seeds, then finish roasting. Remove half the squash and purée or mash, and keep the rest warm in a very low oven until ready to serve. 2. Meanwhile, soften the onion and garlic in the butter in a frying pan. Stir in the rice for 1-2 mins. Add the wine and cook, stirring, until the wine has evaporated. Add the hot stock, a ladleful at a time, stirring until each addition is almost completely absorbed. Once all the stock has been added, the rice should be tender and creamy. Stir in the puréed or mashed squash until warm, then season if you like. Serve in shallow bowls, scatter over the reserved roasted squash, crumbled cheese, chives and pumpkin seeds.

Wisborough Green History - Bill Puttick Interview Concl. Concluding excerpts from the interview by Grace Stewart, Bill was asked if he'd been in the forces: "No, I wasn’t, I wasn’t old enough. In the Second World War I went to Brighton for a medical and they sent me home and sent me to work on the farm again. I had four brothers that went right through the 1914 -18 war and they all come back. One brother got a bullet through his arm at the Somme, that’s all. I had a brother who was in the Navy, he was on two ships that got sunk and he got saved, but they’re all gone now. I’m the youngest of eight and I’m the only one that’s left. We weren’t very well off. My father only worked on the farm, but we always kept two pigs. We had plenty of that kind to eat and we had a big garden, we had plenty of vegetables (where they lived at Green Bridge House - RB). We had to work before we went out to play; we had so much work to do. We got home from school then chop the wood up, it was all fires in those days, summer and winter. We had to get up in the morning, light the copper. We wasn’t near the people in the village, but there was twice as many at church as what you get today.” “Well, you see, we always said in the morning you got what we called them the highups, like Mr Wyatt, the postmaster, and all them. They went to church and in the evening because of working hard they had their candles to see to and that kind of thing. Mr Penney always used to say that the evenings were by far the best. We only had four bells, we didn’t ring them at lunchtime. Mr Carter gave the sixth bell, you can see the plaque in the belfry, and that made a peal. Mr Penney, told the people that come to live at the Min House (?) when they complained and the answer he gave them was 'Well, if you don’t like the church bells, you shouldn’t have a bought a house so close.' And the old vicarage (demolished 1963 - RB) was a terrible old place." "Mr Penny, of course, he was the longest serving one, but Mr Edwards (1931 to 1940 RB), we always said he was too good a parson. This church would never hold him. He wrote several books. He had two children. He had Mary come to see him one day, I said. Pity she hadn’t come to see me, my two boys were brought up with their two and we said he was too clever for Wisborough Green. He wrote two books while he was here. I remember one 'Jack, Jill and God', I forget the other book, but he was a reviewer for The Times on religious books. He went to Norwich and was canon of the Cathedral. He was here only a few years, he always had a walking stick and a pipe.” Grace suggested that the village was a bit quieter in those days: “There wasn’t motor cars, look. And the flower show was always held in The Park next to the cottage down there. That was Doctor Heygate and his son Rex. And they used to ride around with his bag on the back on the bicycle. Doctor Heygate had a coachman that used to drive him around. You see, there was no telephone. If you wanted a doctor, you had to go to the doctor's house.” (Before the advent of telephones, a note had to be left at the house for the doctor to come - RB.) This has covered Bill Puttick's more interesting memories over a period from 1910 until the 1960s. Hopefully older villagers will remember some of the events whilst for others, perhaps this has illustrated the minutia of everyday life in the village from several generations ago. Many thanks to Grace for arranging the interview. Richard B. 30

The Gardener’s Calendar

by Ian Clemens

 There's still time to plant daffodil bulbs and other

spring flowering bulbs.

 Plant out spring bedding displays of pansies, violas and

primulas.

 Start to plant bare-root roses - they can be planted any time between

now and March.

 Continue to lift dahlia tubers, begonias and gladiolus corms to store

dry over the winter months. Remove the dead foliage before storing.

 Cut back the yellowing foliage of herbaceous perennials, and lift and

divide overcrowded clumps to maintain their vigour.

 Lift parsnips after the first frosts when their flavour will have

sweetened.

 Divide mature clumps of rhubarb once they are dormant.  If you have access to fresh manure, now is the time to spread it

across the surface of your vegetable beds to rot down over winter.

 Build a raised bed to take the bending out of vegetable growing.  Stake top-heavy brassicas and draw up some soil around the base of

the stem to prevent wind rocking the plant and causing damage to the roots.

 Now is the ideal time to plant currant bushes whilst they are dormant.  Plant raspberry canes now for a delicious home grown crop.  Check fruits in storage and promptly remove any showing signs of

disease or rotting.

 Tidy up your strawberry plants - cut off any dead leaves and remove

runners.

 Prune pear and apple trees anytime between now and February. But

don't be tempted to prune your plum trees now as they will be susceptible to the silver leaf fungus - wait until midsummer.

 Apply glue bands or grease bands to the trunks of fruit trees to

prevent wingless female winter moths climbing the trunks and laying their eggs in the branches.

The future for Family Support Work St Peter's has supported Family Support Work for many years. The organisation is celebrating 125 years working with children and families in Sussex. The celebration service in Chichester cathedral was led by Bishop Martin with the focus on new energy to do the best for our families. It is vital for our society to have families living in happiness and safety. Challenging economic times are increasing pressure on families who were just coping and now find themselves asking for help.

What makes FSW special?  We work with individual families identifying short term goals and supporting them to achieve these.  There is no time limit for our intervention.  We are recognised as non statutory, without powers and therefore more likely to attain trust of families.  We work with the family as a whole  We complement the paid staff input with that of volunteers.  We employ specialists in play who visit family homes or arrange events around play  We combine practical help (Food, toys, clothing and access grants for essential goods), advice and information, advocacy, in a seamless blend of support.  Some families are able to enjoy respite breaks at our partner organisations (Mothers Union) caravans at Winchelsea and Selsey.  We have continuously rebuilt families lives since 1890.  We are a Sussex organisation for children and their families.  We are a Christian organisation working with people regardless of their faith. I would love to chat to anyone who wishes to be a Family Support Work volunteer or be on the Petworth Deanery Committee. Judy Moorey, 01403 700700

Wisborough Green Short Mat Bowls Club We have played two matches recently firstly away to Alfold, a friendly club like ourselves. We disappointingly lost on all 3 mats, with Carol Cuthbert, Eileen Warrington, Jane Adsett and Bernard Adsett going down 14 - 22. Also Audrey Hodgson, Marilyn Knight and Tony Broughton losing 13 - 16 and Evelyn Ringrose, Hilary Nulty, Sue Taber and Shirley Bundy losing 12 - 20. The second was away at Arundel, a strong side who play in Countywide division 2 of the league. We acquitted ourselves well with Marilyn Knight, Tony Broughton, David Luxford and Monica Enticknap just losing out 18 - 20 in a closely fought game on mat 1. Then Evelyn Ringrose/Joan Goodchild, Pauline Shipway, George Shipway and Reg Snelgar losing 17 - 23 on mat 2. The singles is still in full swing with victories for Eileen Warrington over Shirley Bundy in the last of the 1st round matches. In the second round wins for Audrey Hodgson over Eileen Warrington, Jean Head over Sue Taber, Marilyn Knight over Hilary Nulty, Jane Adsett over Keith Carter and Joan Goodchild over Ann Beasley. Then in the quarter finals David Luxford beating Jean Head and Marilyn Knight beating George Shipway. Finally I had an odd phone call the other day, from a man saying "Are you the captain of the local bowling club?" So I said "Well it depends where you're calling from." Monica Enticknap, Captain 35

Wisborough Green Farmers’ and Village Market News

Next Market - Thursday 12th November 2015 Wisborough Green Village Hall 9 am – 12.30 pm The Sussex Farmer's Market of the Year Award has been awarded to Goodwood Home Farm at Goodwood. A very specialist and worthy winner. We too produce locally produced lamb, pork, beef, quail, turkeys, eggs, bacon, cheese, goats cheese, gourmet food for every day eating, bread and honey. We also have fresh fish. Even our craft products like jewellery are made up locally as are the new clothes range. We do excellently well for such a small place. Philip and Alison are retiring from the Market at the end of this year. Their expertise has been extremely helpful and we have developed as a result. Managing the Market needs more people as naturally we need to cover the same work but with two people less. We are splitting up jobs into small chunks that will need less time. This could be on an occasional basis and as part of a team. So not too taxing! Help could be with the Table Team, the Signs Team or the Refreshments Team. Another area would be to deal with the money and another one to help with contacting the Media and another with getting posters up and then down - a companionable job for two. Whichever is your skill and ability, the Market organisation would benefit for the good of the Community. NEWS: As if you did not realise, Christmas is creeping up on us! All our stallholders are taking orders so as to ease the strain in December. Nick is providing his turkeys (new this year) as well as quails; Sue is cooking up mincemeat, cakes and puds for solo use and gifts and the bigger ones. Find out which gourmet foods can go in the freezer to ease the cooking situation. Check out the fish to for those warming kedgerees and fish pies. Flowers and wreaths for decoration and presents; local handicraft. It is all here - well nearly! The Wisborough Green Farmers’ and Village Market Committee

Wisborough Green Horticultural Society Monday 2nd November 2015 8pm Village Hall Monday Talk: Helen Yemm “Questions and Answers” Helen was a unanimous success four years ago when she gave a very personal talk about the experience of creating her own garden. What a feisty, creative and excellent gardener she showed herself to be. Helen writes each week for the Saturday Telegraph. Her forte is in dealing with questions and observations from readers. She advises practically and gives other people's solutions too. So her information is from study, true grit gardening and listening and evaluating other gardener's experiences. Tickets will be available at £5 to cover costs. For tickets and Questions for Helen please ring Philip on 01403 700402 or Sue (our treasurer) 01403 700197. Fear not, you do not need to have a question to pose in order to gain entry, just a ticket. Everyone is welcome; friends, family, visitors. We will have free refreshments afterwards so people can have an opportunity to speak with Helen and mix and meet. If you come without a ticket and if we are booked out, then sorry; if there happen to be vacancies then tickets can be bought at the door. Insurance for not getting overcrowded. Thank you everyone involved in the Autumn Plant Sale. No rain, no gales. People are really generous with their time growing plants on, potting them up and passing on spares. Thank you too to our very own Gardener Baker for that classic Mary Berry Lemon drizzle cake. Overheard comment, “That was the best I have ever eaten”. What a pleasant way to raise money to help pay for the costs of the Shows.

The Table Top competition. The theme will be the same each month to allow scope for as many gardeners as possible to participate: “From your own garden / allotment, five preferably flowering or evergreen stems displayed to best effect – of one or more variety.” Points will be awarded each month, accumulating for a prize at the AGM. As the flowering plants are well battered by rain and wind, it becomes quite exciting seeing people's originality in creating an arrangement of five, which can be just evergreens. Have fun and enjoy being creative. Aija Hamilton

WI Report For our October meeting on the 1st, Heather Hook from Seaford came and gave us a talk and slides from her career as an aerial photographer. She took us, metaphorically, from her early days in Portugal with her photographer husband, working for a travel agency, to South Africa working for a Mexican before returning to Bath where she set up her own business. She thinks nothing of going up in a helicopter or small twin engine planes with the door open & leaning out to photograph historical sites! Our next meeting is on Thursday 5th November when we will be having our own firework party in the guise of the Annual Meeting. This is your opportunity to recap on our last year and give suggestions for future fund raising and deciding who to donate our future raffle monies to. See you there. Neighbourhood Watch - Crime News & Advice Autumn Burglary Campaign A burglary in your own home is a devastating experience that can affect you and your family long after the incident has occurred. The good news is that the risk of becoming a victim of burglary in Sussex is low and since launching Sussex Police's initiative to tackle burglary under the banner of Operation Magpie in 2012, there has been a year of year reduction in burglary dwellings across Sussex. However, during the winter the risk of being burgled can increase with the darker evenings once the clocks go back as it can be easier for burglars to identify homes that may not be occupied. Stay secure at home this winter. In addition to simple burglary crime prevention advice the campaign will be encouraging you to share with your family, friends and neighbours the responsibility for supporting our more vulnerable in the community and promoting the best way to keep our more vulnerable members of the community safe. To help achieve this, the theme of the campaign is focused on the emotional impact of burglary highlighting victims stories - both generic and the more target messages on how those more vulnerable in the community can be targeted through distraction burglary. Burglary can manifest itself in different ways and home security actions will go along way to reduce the chances of becoming a victim of burglary but residents of Sussex also need to be vigilant about who you let into your home as well. Keep your home secure this Winter How secure is your home? Check? Do you pass the burglary prevention test? (Continued on page 41)

Weather Watch Wisborough Green Rainfall for September was 63mm (last year a very dry 5mm – my 7 yr average is 81mm). Loftus (Redcar and Cleveland) had 53mm in the 24hours to 6pm on September 15 th (just a tad damp). Remarkably the highest September daytime and lowest night time temperatures happened in the same place and same day – this was at Braemar. Top temp was 24°C and the lowest, minus 1.3°C. Sunshine levels were normal for September. Hopefully you all got up to witness the super-moon lunar eclipse? This happens when the earth’s shadow obscures the moon when it’s orbit is closest to the earth. If you missed it, the next one is in 2033! CYBER TIPS “I don’t believe it!” But….sadly, I do believe it. How can seemingly intelligent people be so careless? I heard on the news this morning (as I write), that a highly qualified and successful solicitor had transferred thousands of pounds, belonging to one of her clients, to a series of new bank accounts on the strength of a phone call “from her bank”! And she was surprised to hear from her insurers that they were not interested in her claim . Banks don’t work like that – believe it! Peter Edmonds
