deep online at: www.deep-london.co.uk • www.issuu.com • facebook • www.myspace.com/wiredmag • @bonsai_editor Hello there.. ...and welcome to issue 76. First up this month can anyone tell me what that big yellow flaming ball in the sky is? I’m frightened. I’m joking of course, I know it’s the sun, or an asteroid, but it’s been so long since we’ve seen it... Finger’s crossed it’s here to stay for a while. Actually, given that it’s now 7.47am and I’ve been up all night writing, it’s making me feel remarkably chipper. What hasn’t been making me chipper, however, is the debacle that was last month’s article on that most lost of lost Croydon boozers, The Forum, which had big chunks missing out of it thanks to a printing error (not my fault - yay!). You’ll be happy to know all that’s been sorted out now, and we’ve reprinted it properly this month. If you read it in March, why not read it again in its proper state - it may make more sense this time round? Elsewhere this month, I’ve learned not to make dishes with mussels when Croydon’s answer to Johnny Craddock is about. Deciding he felt sorry for them and wanting to adopt them as pets, with them presumably living out a long and fruitful (as much as mussels are ever fruitful) life in the bath, he refused to undertake the necessary de-bearding (oo-er) process. This left yours truly, Croydon’s answer to Fanny Craddock, to do it, resulting in a sorely cut thumb (top tip - be careful when debearding mussels). Plus I’ve had a cold for about three weeks and last night I cracked a tooth (not on a mussel, but on some bread marvellous), but apart from that I’m fine, thanks for asking. I can’t think of anything else to say now, so here is a picture of an angry cat wearing a hat. Until next month, pip pip, avanti and allons-y! Angela x

film-fest!
I
must say I was somewhat surprised to learn that this was indeed the first ever Croydon film festival - I assumed we’d always had one. Fair play then to Davina and Jenny at The Council for getting it all together and including some genuinely exciting events, so, rather than whittle on, I’ll just get on and tell you what’s happening, shall I? Oh, further details of all these events can be found by visiting the website www.croydonfilmfestival.org.uk. Let’s start with a couple of director’s Q&A sessions: First up we have a double bill, beginning with one of my favourite films, Koyaanisqatsi (I wonder if it’ll be so good now I’m not stoned...) or ‘Life Out Of Balance’, an apocalyptic vision of the collision of two different worlds - urban life and technology versus the environment. A wordless, visual masterpiece, this wonderfully powerful movie is directed and produced by Godfrey Reggio and set to the worldly sounds of composer Philip Glass. Also on the bill is Endless Cities, a cinematic exploration of the urban conditions, environments, patterns, divisions, conflicts and hopes that make up the living realities of people living in cities via video collected in numerous countries over several
years. The screening will be accompanied by Matthias Kispert creating a live mix from environmental sounds and London Symphony Orchestra violinist David Ballesteros. As well as the two films, there’s also a Q&A session with Endless Cities director Mike Faulkner. Thu 15 April. From 7.30pm. £10 the lot. Bargain! Wednesday 7th April sees another Q&A along with a screening of the film Freestyle, a uniquely created project in conjunction with Bebo and the NBA which sought to find stars for the film. It’s a British urban drama set in the competitve world of freestyle basketball, and you’ll be able to ask director Kolton Lee all about it, from 8pm, for just £7. A triple whammy of Q&A-ers on Thursday 22nd April where you’ll have the chance to grill not only director Nick Moran, but also designer Russell De Rozario and location manager Tony Hood about their films Telstar - The Joe Meek Story (The first film written and directed by Nick Moran, it’s a music-infused drama about Joe Meek, the flamboyant, tone deaf songwriterproducer behind the ‘60s hits Have I the Right, Just Like Eddie, Johnny, Remember Me and Telstar. Contains very strong language, strong sex and violence. Hurrah!) and new Croydonset tale The Kid. Obviously there will
4
Welcome, everyone, to the first EVER Croydon film festival hurrah! also be a screening of Telstar and also an exclusive screening of The Kid trailer. It’s £10 in and starts at 8pm. There’s more interactivity with filmmakers to be had throughout the festival, starting with A Film-Makers Conference in the Clocktower on April 10th. A full day of workshops and whatnot, including a Music Video workshop with Adam Linzey, Enrico Tessarin and Robert Rose, a DIY shorts workshop with Barrington Robinson, a documentary Q&A with Ken McGill, director of The Graham Taylor documentary, An Impossible Job, and an afternoon session looking at how to break through into films with Enrico Tessarin (New Treatment/Fourth Passenger Ltd), Manny Bonnett (Director of Sophia’s Diary), Barrington Robinson (Award winning short producer) and David Belshaw (Vice President of Freemantle Media). All this is followed by Making Factual TV, hosted by Simon Collins, Vice Principle of The Brit School with Steve Gowans - Head of Factual Ent, Channel 5, Barrington Robinson Award winning short producer, Ken McGill - Award winning film maker and Jeff Simpson - Television producer and director. Blimey. All this is FREE but you have to register. Do so by visiting croydonfilmfestival.org.uk or emailing film@croydon.gov.uk.
Elsewhere, one reason that the Croydon Film Festival was satrted was to celebrate all the amazingly talented filmmakers living in Croydon (e-mail the festival to join the Croydon Filmmakers’ Network - details on website) so why not get involved with a couple of competitions in the form of MOBILE MOVIES - Make 60 second films on your Mobile Phone and upload them at croydonfilmfestival.org.uk. Deadline 16th April (vote online for your favourite from 17th April); 48HR CHALLENGE: At 6pm on Friday 16th April we’ll be handing out film briefs in sealed envelopes. At 6pm on Sunday 18th April we’ll be collecting in your DVDs. What happens in the intervening 48hrs is down to you! Register at the website by 12th April. If you’re a youngster (aged between 14 and 19) interested in film-making then why not sign up to Croydon Film Ambassadors, a new group consisting of young people who live or study in Croydon and attend weekly workshops with filmmaker Jaime Taylor at the Clocktower on Thursdays from 6–8pm. Using professional equipment, the group develop ideas and create new short films for screening at events (including their own night at this year’s Croydon Film Festival). Croydon Film Ambassadors are currently recruiting so to join or find out more email film@croydon.gov.uk. If you don’t want to get involved in any of this and would rather just sit back and watch some quality films, the festival has that covered too, with
screenings of the Three Colours Trilogy Blue, White, Red (15), from 2pm on 24th April. Spend the day with Krzysztof Kieslowski’s landmark trilogy inspired by the ideals symbolised by the colours of the French flag – liberté, égalité, fraternité (freedom, equality and brotherhood). BLUE is the first film in the trilogy, taking ‘freedom’ as its theme. Julie (Juliette Binoche) tries to deal with the loss of her husband and her daughter in a car crash by leaving everything and everyone in her life behind her, seeking the most absolute kind of freedom – freedom from the world around her and from the memories in her mind. WHITE, a light-hearted black comedy, tells the story of a Polish hairdresser — divorced, homeless, penniless and humiliated he is left on the streets with a single suitcase. Returning by unlikely methods to his hometown in Poland, Karol is determined to get back on his feet and win back the wife he is still in love with. RED follows Valentine, a model who, after her car accidentally hits a dog, strikes up an unlikely relationship with its owner, a retired judge (JeanLouis Trintignant). Despite their differences, a friendship develops between them and they find they both have something to learn about life and people from each other. Bring your comfy trousers and maybe a cushion fro numb arse syndrome. There will be an interval after each film to get up and wander and have a ciggie and whatnot, and snacks will be on hand all day. The event finishes at
6
7.40pm and will cost you just £12 for all three films. Kids (and, frankly, adults) are catered for with showings of Buster Keaton’s The General, Powell and Pressburger’s The Red Shoes, (considered as visually one of the most innovative and beautiful works of cinema ever created), the cartoon The Princess & The Frog, (which is also an Autism friendly screening) and Pipi Longstocking, more on which in a moment. More details as ever from the website. Possibly the film festival’s most exciting innovation, however, comes from the strand ‘Fantastic Films in Unusual Locations’, which does exactly what it says on the tin by screening films out and about in Croydon. A bloody good idea, as far as we’re concerned, and we’re only sad that a couple of the events that were mooted didn’t come off in the end. Hopefully this year will be a roaring success and the other stuff will appear next time. For this year though, we’ll start with the aforementioned Pipi Longstocking, the tale of an irreverant Swedish girl and her exuberant adventures, which is being shown (which we think is an extraordinary result) at IKEA, Purley Way, home of Sweden’s premier accoutrement emporium. Think how much bureacracy had to be negotiated there - marvellous. Anyway, it’s showing in the restaurant at both 12.30 and 5.30pm on 12th April, kids can eat free after 3pm when any adult meal is purchased. (Conditions apply, please visit ikea.co.uk/croydon) and tickets
can be obtained from IKEA now (in person only). Slightly further afield, why not sneak into school after hours for a screening of Son Of Rambow at Addington High School, Fairchildes Avenue, New Addington. The film revolves around Will Proudfoot, who has been brought up in a strictly religious household, forbidden to watch TV or listen to music. After Lee Carter, the school trouble-maker, blows Will’s mind with a pirate copy of Rambo: First Blood, Will’s easily persuaded to act in Lee’s home-made movie sequel. Described as an heartwarming comedy, Son Of Rambow stars friend of the mag Jessica Hynes (nee Stevenson) and comic genius Eric Sykes. Tuesday, 27 April 2010 - 6:30 PM £3 / Tickets available from Addington High School, The Warehouse and Burgess Boys Pet Care, Addington High School. At the other end of the scale, and of town, on Thursday 29th April at 8pm head for The Edge in The Norbury for a fantastic party night with cocktails and a screening of Coyote Ugly, the tale of Violet Sanford, moving to New
York to pursue her dream of becoming a famous songwriter who finds herself desperate and broke. Through a twist of fate, the shy, innocent Violet lands a job as one of the barmaids at the hottest nightclub in town - the wild and fun Coyote Ugly. Just £3 in (over 18’s only), and tickets are available from the bar. Lastly, back into Croydon and to The Green Dragon, where this is happening: SUNDAY 18TH APRIL SING-ALONG-A WICKER MAN (18) TIME: 7PM TICKETS: £3 Dust down your best Scottish accent, dress up as your favourite character and come and join in with the singing, buttock-slapping and dialogue of this horror classic. Your hosts, David Bramwell and Eliza Skelton will get things warmed up with a little live music, stories and fun, lead you through the actions and lyrics for the songs and then, at the ‘Witching Hour’, you’ll be given a goody bag full of surprises – then we’ll roll the film… WARNING – NOT FOR THE FAINT HEARTED OR SENSITIVE! “KOOKY BRITISH SILLINESS AT ITS
BEST” Big Issue. Tickets for this madness are available from The Green Dragon. The whole festival winds up on Friday 30th April at 7.30pm in The Clocktower with the Croydon Film Festival Awards. This red carpet event will include a welcome address from Munira Mirza - Advisor to the Mayor of London on Arts and Culture. Among other prizes, successful filmmakers will receive 3d animation and imaging software and gift packages from The ICA, and there will be canapés by India Dining Tapas (this is where you will find me...). For further information email film@croydon.gov.uk. And that’s your lot - I think you’ll agree that for a first attempt it’s not half bad, with loads of great films and brilliant chances to get involved. We hope the festival goes from strength to strength, not least of all because we’ve just ordered our popcorn in bulk. Now, if you don’t mind, shut up, there’s a film coming on. . . Further details on all events and tickets etc can be obtained from www.croydonfilmfestival.org.uk
A Deep guide to local places that’ve been used in some famous, some obscure and some right old odd films over the years, complete with nearby hostelries and points of interest for the discerning film buff. . . OUR MOTHER’S HOUSE (1967) Director: Jack Clayton (The Innocents) Stars: Dirk Bogarde, Mark Lester. . . Synopsis: A genuinely disturbing and spooky pyschological chiller about the seven Hook children who, when their mother dies, bury her in the back garden and carry on as normal out of fear of being ‘taken away’. Complete with seances and shrines, things begin to fall further apart with the arrival of Charlie (Bogarde), their dissolute father, who is holding a dark secret. An highly recommended classic chiller. Locations: The House: Chepstow Rise, East Croydon / Addiscombe. You can see the very blurred sign when one of the girls receives a motorbike ride from a passer-by. All the Victorian houses in the area have been cleared, in an all too customary act of cultural vandalism, for 1970s housing and all that is left is the post box, street light and plane tree on
Chichester Road, (seen as the motorcyclist roars off). ‘Our Mother’s House’ stood close to the southeast corner of Chepstow Rise. Nearest pubs: The Cricketers, Addiscombe Road. KONGA (1961) Director: John Lemont Stars: Michael Gough (best known as Alfred the Butler in the Batman films) Synopsis: This, from www.britishhorrorfilms.co.uk, does it better than I ever could: ‘Konga is, as you would expect from the title, a
double in size (courtesy of some particularly un-special effects). There's a great bit where the cat manages to lick up some spilled serum, so Decker simply grabs a handy gun and shoots it dead. For some reason he reckons that a rapidly-growing feral chimp would be preferable to an overlarge ginger tom. Perhaps he was worried about what damage such an animal could cause to the curtains? Decker is managing to fit in a bit of biology teaching amongst his catshooting and monkey-growing activities, but the only kind of biology he actually wants to practice is with a
“Fantastic!” says a bored police sergent, “There’s a huge monster gorilla that’s constantly growing to outlandish proportions loose on the streets!” film which involves a giant ape, but it’s much more bizarre than just ‘King Kong in London’. As a plane crashes unconvincingly in the jungle, we learn that it contained famous botanist Charles Decker. A year later, Decker (Michael Gough - on top form) mysteriously re-appears - proudly sporting a chimp called Konga and a wig and claiming to be on the verge of a link ‘between what grows in the earth and animal life’. This being the 1960s, few sensible questions are asked by the press waiting to greet him at the airport like "How did you get that chimp through customs?". Decker goes home and immediately starts work, which involves creating living plants with "human characteristics" (see The Mutations and Die Monster Die for similar cobblers) and creating a serum from their leaves, which he injects into Konga and sees him immediately 8
busty blonde in his class called Sandra. "There is a maturity about you now, Sandra…" he schmoozes. "You have it in you to become a true scientist…" And that's not all he plans to have in her, either, if you catch my drift. As usual with these nutty professors, he's not averse to telling the world what he's up to. His claims that he'll soon be able to "change the shape of human beings" gets him into trouble with the Dean of his college and it becomes clear that his only recourse is to set Konga on the unfortunate man. More drugs are pumped into the chimp, and this time it changes into no, not an even bigger chimp - a man in a gorilla suit (hurrah!). The Dean is soon marmalised, with Decker chillingly likening him to a "lab rat". Margaret (the horse-faced secretary) finds out what's been going on, but agrees to keep schtum
if he makes an honest woman of her. Rather charmingly, she explains: "Whatever may be shoddy and spoiled in my life, one thing will be clean. I will be Mrs Charles Decker!" Decker has by now lost it big style, and keeps sending his hairy friend out on homicidal errands which he claims are just "testing Konga for obedience", but when Margaret discovers Decker snogging Sandra in the greenhouse, she decides to take her revenge using the power of enormous monkeys. She hypnotises Konga to obey only her and injects him with enough serum to make him really quite big (she then promptly snuffs it). Konga picks up Decker (his reaction? The constant repetition of one line: "Put me down! You fool!" which, to give the film makers their due, does get funnier each time it's uttered) and heads towards Big Ben (or, in fact, Croydon High Street Ed). However, any hopes from the viewer that we might be in for a bout of wholesale destruction are to be short-lived. Konga's rampage is restricted to the occasional appearance loitering behind a building, and lots of reaction shots from people looking upwards. "Fantastic!" says a bored police sergeant. "There is a huge monster gorilla that is constantly growing to outlandish proportions loose on the streets!" I'm sure you can guess the rest but if your guess involves Konga
doing anything other than standing still and waiting for the army to blow the crap out of him, you'd be wrong. The final use he puts Decker to is one of the more entertaining moments of the film, mind you. What saves this non-spectacular travesty from eternal damnation is of course, Michael Gough. The man is on top form - shooting cats for no reason, badly mistreating his ugly secretary-cum-lover and lusting after busty ladies who are young enough to be his grand-daughter. And noone wears a wig quite as spectacularly badly as Gough does. There are also a few good ideas, and even the occasional surprise during the dross. The one vaguely heroic figure (Sandra's boyfriend, Bob) gets brutally killed before he has the chance to do anything, and once again pretty much everyone dies. There are even hints at possible homosexual bestiality on Gough's part: "We know each other much better than the world suspects…" he confides in the chimp at one point, and there's a great bit when he barks at Margaret: "Please leave, I want to be alone with Konga!" However, this could just be my mucky mind going into overdrive…” Locations: Croydon High Street. Nearest pubs: Take your pick from any around the High Street, Surrey Street, Crown Hill ‘triangle’. BRAZIL (1985) Director: Terry Gilliam Stars: Jonathan Pryce, Robert De Niro, Katherine Helmond, Ian Holm, Bob Hoskins, Michael Palin, Ian Richardson, Jim Broadbent. . . Synopsis: I doubt anyone out there doesn’t know what Brazil is about, but just in case: With bureaucracy and ductwork running amok in a dystopian Orwellian future. Brazil is the story of a mixup that leads to the imprisonment of Mr. Buttle, shoe repairman, instead of Harry Tuttle, illegal freelance Heating Engineer. Bureaucrat Sam Lowry (prone to escapes to a fantasy world) gets branded a terrorist and becomes hunted by the state himself in the process of correcting a clerical error. Locations: The state-run torture 10
chamber is inside the IKEA towers on the Purley Way (it’s not still there, but that’s where it was filmed). Other bits filmed thereabouts. Nearest pubs: Hmm, No pubs as such, but a couple of ropey restaurants, and the bowling alley has a bar, I believe. SAXON (2007) Director: Greg Loftin Stars: Sean Harris (24Hr Party People (Ian Curtis)), Sarah Matravers, (Footballers’ Wives), Henry Kelly (him from Going For Gold). Synopsis: Saxon is described as “a black comedy with a Chandler-esque narrative, high on spaghetti western tension and populated by a bizarre gallery of the good, the bad and the weird. Loftin’s approach is similar in tone to US director Rian Johnson (Brick), following an anti-hero thrust into the role of detective to unravel the web of deceit around him. Except Loftin’s impenetrable microcosm isn’t one of kids and slang, but of a council estate called Saxon - a place on the verge of collapse. Main character Eddie is a man with a past. Recently released from prison, he finds his old stomping ground a ghost town and is quickly hired by former friend Linda (Matravers) to find her missing husband. Unfortunately, Eddie isn’t what you’d consider ‘fast’ anymore. Having given up the drink his skills are frequently
VELVET GOLDMINE (1998) Director: Todd Haynes Stars: Ewan McGregor, Jonathan Rhys Meyers, Brian Slade, Christian Bale, Toni Collette, Eddie Izzard Synopsis: 1971: Glamrock explodes all over the world. Brian Slade, a young rockstar, inspires numerous teenagers to paint their nails and explore their own sexuality. In the end, unable to escape the role he created for himself, Slade plots his own murder. When his fans discovers that the murder is a fake, his star falls and he is forgotten about. 1984: Arthur, a journalist, gets assigned the story of Brian Slade. When Arthur was young and grew up in Manchester, he was more than a fan of Slade. Reluctantly he accepts the assignment and starts to investigate what happened to his glamrock hero.
Locations: You’ll like this one. The opening shot, supposed to be ‘New York - 1984’ is actually Croydon Underpass. Hurrah! Nearest pubs: No actual pubs, but the hotel bars of the Fairfield and Jury’s Inn hotels are right on it. And finally some others that were made around here: THE DA VINCI CODE (2006) Director: Ron Howard Stars: Tom Hanks Synopsis: Loose stool water of the highest order. Locations: Fairfield Halls. Nearest pubs: Fairfield Halls bar, The Brief. HOPE AND GLORY (1987) Director: John Boorman Stars: Sebastian Rice-Edwards Synopsis: A semiautobiographical project by John Boorman about a nine year old boy called Bill as he grows up in London during the blitz of World War 2. Locations: Just says ‘Croydon’. THE TWISTED TALE OF BLOODY MARY (2008) Not the drink, the person. Locations: Old Palace School (interiors) Nearest pubs: The Gun Tavern. HELLCATS: MUD WRESTLING (1983) Er, ok. Locations: It just says Croydon, no further details. Anyone? DWARVES IN SHOWBIZ (2002) Yes, really. Made by Channel 5 Television. The BFI say this: “Documentary on various little people who have a career in the entertainment industry, from actor Kenny Baker to five-man strip ensemble the Half Monty”. Say no more. Locations: Again, just says Croydon, no further details. If anyone can fill us in on more Croydon films or the missing locations, please let us know: angela@deep-london.co.uk

labeled “crap” and he spends most of the time getting a good shoeing. Elsewhere, Eddie crosses paths with Councilman Russell, the big bad sheriff of the piece, clearing out the wasters of Saxon estate ready for a new airport runway, and the film certainly has some shades of social realism despite the Lynchian strangeness. Filmed in a real condemned estate, Saxon’s environment is graffiti and oppressive architecture. Like most noirs, Eddie is driven by his desire to atone for his sins and escape to a better world. Loftin’s clever choice of location reflects the same dilemma within modern Britain where some estates are left to fend for themselves, cut off from the world, their inhabitants living at the whim of council funding. Taking what British cinema does best – grim, kitchen sink drama – and warping it with American imagery and pop culture, Loftin has created a spoof of masculine values and heroics. Destined to become a cult classic, it is proof that there are still filmmakers in the UK with a taste for anarchy.” Locations: The now demolished Roundshaw Estate, Wallington.
Fast and furious fun with Croydon’s very own all female Roller Derby team, the Fenris Flyers. . .
R
oller Derby, apparently, is the fastest growing sport in the UK and with the release of new film ‘Whip It’, it looks like it’s set to get even bigger. The film, a comedy/drama is Drew Barrymore’s directorial debut and follows the travails of Bliss Cavendar (Ellen Page), an indie-loving misfit who finds a way of dealing with her small-town misery after she discovers a roller derby league. Sounds fun! Actually, apparently, it is, and it’s garnered almost universally positive reviews. Not that any of that matters to the ladies (roller derby is, unusually, almost entirely a female affair) of Croydon’s very own roller derby team, the Fenris Flyers, who were risking life and limb on four tiny wheels long before the film came along, and will no doubt still be doing so long after it’s gone. Don’t worry at this point if you’re wondering what the hell we’re going on about as it is, over here at least, all relatively new, so if your only experience of rollerskating is roller disco, here’s a helpful if pheneomenally pretentious bit of background from Wikipedia: “Roller derby is an American invented contact sport - and historically, a form of sports entertainment - based on formation roller skating around an oval track, with points scored as certain players lap members of an opposing team. In past decades, roller derby had been primarily a professional or paid sport for both women and men. “Contemporary roller derby is international, predominantly female, typically operates on an amateur (or unpaid) circuit and has a strong do it yourself ethic which often features both athleticism and a punk thirdwave feminism aesthetic.” Or, in plain English, these girls have attitude, something that’s reflected in the tradition of skate names, roller derby girls’ irreverant
burlesque-esque pseudonyms - Fenris Flyers, for example, include Mosquito, Annaconda, Jeopardy Jinx, Ghouldielocks, Liv fast, Skatja Boloksov (ha!), Maggie Fracture, Amazon Dragstar, Coco Dean, The Don, Arwen Red, Zyklon C and Dot Cottonmouth. But why, what and how, I hear you ask? Let’s ask someone who actually does it, shall we, in the form of Fenris Flyers founder (alliteration-haters
12
beware!) Dee Hogan, who writes on the Roller Derby Croydon! facebook page: “It’s about time croydon's femme fatales had a derby team so I've decided to start one up! Roller derby is a full contact sport which is predominantly female, its a great way to stay in shape and meet new people but its definitely not for the faint hearted! The aim of the game is for your
Jammer (point scorer) to pass through the pack of skaters and gain points for every opposing blocker they pass, catch back up with the pack and pass through again, trying to score as many points as possible within the 2 minute time. Your job is to clear the path or assist your point scorer through the pack, and stop the opposing point scorer (jammer) from scoring points by either knocking her down or ‘booty blocking’ (getting in her way). “Its very difficult to describe the sport that is roller derby in a small amount of words, so unless you go to a bout (match/game) you may find it hard to understand. Check out this video for a better understanding: http://doiop.com/wheels” She’s not joking when she says it’s a full contact sport, I’ve seen some of the injuries and frankly, it’s all a bit too energetic and indeed dangerous
for me, but if you’re a female with a ‘punk third-wave feminism aesthetic’, or a female with any kind of aesthetic at all who enjoys knocking other females over whilst hurtling around on little wheels then this could well be the sport for you. Fenris Flyers describe themselves as “women of every race, ability, size, sexuality and confidence. We are mothers, sisters, artists, musicians, girlfirends - locally sourced from the concrete jungle of Croydon”, which pretty much covers everyone, and serves to illustrate the inclusive nature of the sport, which is no bad thing. Men can get involved too, by the way, for example, the Flyers photographer, Danny Bourne, aka Jay Pegg is also a trainee referee (dannybournephotography.co.uk), Matt Pollard does all their internet wizardry and Aide at the Scream Lounge has made his venue the
home of the Croydon Roller Derby Girls, so if you’re a fella you can get involved too, even if it’s just by going along and supporting these insane women at their bouts. It looks mental - approved! Fenris Flyers are always looking for new recruits, both female skaters and male or female referees. If you’re interested in giving it a go, e-mail: fenrisflyers@gmail.com OR deathpixie666@hotmail.com OR croydonrollerderby@live.co.uk, or pop along to one of their current training sessions: Mondays 6.30-8pm in St George’s Walk, Croydon, Wednesdays 6.30-8pm at Monks Hill Sports Centre and Sundays 2-4pm, also at Monks Hill Sports Centre. More info from www.myspace.com/fenrisflyers, or find them on facebook under Roller Derby Croydon! They’re also always looking for sponsors and are holding their first fundraising night on Saturday 10th April at Scream Lounge featuring live music from Kitty Hudson, The Traitors and Los, a raffle, merchandise for sale and all sorts of other shenanigans. I
n 1836 William Philip Molyneux, the 2nd Earl of Sefton, founded a horse race on land his family owned at Aintree. Since then, every year, forty horses have battled around the tough 4 1/2 mile course and over the 30+ fences. It’s the greatest horse race in the world. It’s the Grand National. This year the National goes off like a frog in a sock on Saturday 10th April at 4.15pm (live on BBC1) and as usual it’s going to be a bun-fight between the (maximum of) 40 horses who go to post. As you’d expect from the race where pretty much everyone has a flutter, there are plenty of tipsters out there who’ll tell you they know who’s going to win, and then Mon Mome romps in at 100/1, so what do they know? Incidentally, Mon Mome is running again this year at 12/1, as are previous winners Comply Or Die (I had that one thanks to Doctor Who - it’s a long story. This year he’s at 25/1) and Silver Birch (50/1). However, you can get some ideas through looking at trends, betting and other factors, for example, the smart money if it stays wet seems to be on Black Apalache, who loves the mud, but with the ground now reading on the ‘soft side of good’ and dry weather forecast that could be out of the window. Rumours circulating that champion jockey A P McCoy will saddle Don’t Push It have seen his odds shorten
from 33/1 to 20/1, even though McCoy has never won the National (this will be his 16th attempt). Other significant ante-post movers are Snowy Morning, in to 16/1 from 20, Dream Alliance, now 33/1 from 40/1 and Ellerslie George, whose odds have halved from 100/1 in to 50/1. Elsewhere, someone with far too much time on their hands has analysed the key trends to help you find a winner, and these are: • Horses that are 8 to 12 years old. • A handicap rating between 136 and 157 on the day. • Weight of 11 stone 5lb or under. • Won over at least three miles. • Have run in at least ten chases. • Won a chase worth at least £17,000. Horses that qualify under at least one of those criteria this year include: Snowy Morning, Arbor Supreme, Niche Market, Hello Bud, Dream Alliance and Eric’s Charm. The favourite (at the moment) is Big Fella Thanks, which is one of ‘my horses’ in that I’ve backed it and won a few times, but at 7/1 the value isn’t really there. I don’t like backing favourites, especially in the National (in the last 100 years only 11 favourites have won the race), and I can’t work out why he’s so short in the betting, given that trainer Paul Nicholls has never won the National (44 runners he’s had). I shall still have a punt on
him, but I’ll also be looking elsewhere (and at the 6 other horses in the race that I always back such as Knowhere, Can’t Buy Time and Dream Alliance, who’s looking increasingly tempting). In the Deep offices Petal Dunwoody fancies Irish Raptor whereas other money comes in from a raft of online tipping sites for Niche Market, Mon Mome and Comply Or Die (2nd last year), Tricky Trickster, Can’t Buy Time and pretty much every horse in the field. Of course, come the big day, when everyone in Britain has a flutter and everything can (and generally does) happen, all the form study in the world probably won’t help you. That’s the thrill of the National - we could easily end up with another long-price winner - even another 100/1 like Mon Mome, or Foinavon, or Tipperary Tim, or Gregalach, or Caughoo. I just hope this year that I’m on it.... Before we go, one last tip is to put your bet on at Paddy Power, who are offering 1/4 odds on the first 5 places, where with other bookies it’s only the first 4 places, so if your horse drags itself over the line in 5th place, you’ll still get a return on an each way bet. Anyway, below you’ll find the list of the 65 runners still potentially in the National at time of press, although this will be whittled down to a maximum of 40 before the big day. Good luck!

architecture of Croydon. If you look at photographs of the buildings cleared away to make room for the ‘space-age’ town centre redesign of the 1960s, you find on the whole

‘progressives’ never quite arrived. What the architects and highhanded town planners were actually creating was two or three vast concrete wind tunnels, all done on an inhuman scale. But there were some good bits. I’m quite fond of the Fairfield Halls, for example. But the best bit of
evidently to other members, this was the lost city of Atlantis of vanished Croydon public houses. A sort of Titanic of the local lost pub fraternity. I set a competition to find a good picture of The Forum. One Rickie Blaikie quickly obliged and then we all just gawped. There it was, The Forum, in all its bizarre,

octagonal glory. And there was the travelator! The one that took you from ground floor almost to the upstairs bar. But let me rewind. Jiggery-pokery with that part of the shopping centre – The Forum stood just about where that

fountain thingybob is in the middle of the Whitgift, opposite where the suit shop is now. Though some people say it was much further forward. It was built in the part of the centre known as Trinity Square, in 1968. As you can see from the picture, it was a two-storey, eightsided building – the design had a bit of a vogue then. There is a pub on Bankside rather like it, though smaller in scale. It was a restaurant and a bar and, when it opened for business on the 24th August, 1969 – one week after Woodstock, it suddenly occurs to me – its licensees were Mr and Mrs Fred Scott. It was open from 8.30 in the morning (serving food) to 10.30pm at night. 10.30pm! In the Whitgift Centre! Can you imagine that now… Wouldn’t want to be moseying around at that time in that neck of the woods these days. But back then if you’d got stabbed through the heart for looking the wrong way at a truculent, drug-addled child wearing a hood over his head, you would have been on the front page of every newspaper in the country the next morning and questions would have been asked in Parliament. By 1973 it was being run by Derek and Vera Everett and was an Ind Coope house doing lunches and hot and cold snacks – see pic. Its telephone number was 01-686 8248. Try ringing that now. If someone picks it up and says, ‘Hello, Forum?’ and you can hear a busy bar in the background, put the phone down double quick and have a stiff drink. Then have another one. My own teenage memories of the Forum are sitting in the ‘fishbowl’ upstairs, swilling lager with pals and thinking what a funny old place it was. I knew a barman there once. He was a crook I seem to remember. But The Forum was such a fixture of the Whitgift you never thought it would ever go. Perhaps that’s why there seems to be hardly any pictures of it – nobody thought it 20
was worth photographing. Darren Terry, Lost Croydon Pubs member, said: ‘I recall the summers outside were a top laugh but I also remember Xmas Eve lunchtimes being an equally good session after a half day at work. ‘What a great pub. I used to love the loonies that drunk in there. My first job was working for Sun Alliance in Lansdowne Road, so every lunchtime we used to get through the underpass, five quid out of the Nat West on the way and spend a great lunchtime in there.’ Intriguingly, according to hairdresser and local lo-fi singersongwriter, Nick Reeves ‘it was a haunt of several of the Wonder Stuff at some point.’ And, on sending through the much anticipated interior picture (see over), ‘Here it is - the holy grail! This is inside The Forum (the Whitgift Centre): as to placing a date on it...mmm... well, it's all a little hazy! over my (eek!) right shoulder is Sheraton& Hughes... which was yet to become Waterstones. The orange hair and, ahem, dreads would suggest mid to late eighties. As you can see it is day time...’ Clare Cook said: ‘It was lovely to sit in the sun on your lunchbreak; when the weather was nice you could catch the rays as there was plenty of seats.’ Tim Radley offered these memories: ‘I remember spending Thursday afternoons in The Forum when we had a two-hour lunch break from college, we all used to get tipsy then go back to college for a three-hour session in the kitchen, every week a different person cut or burnt themselves.’ Maggie Albert Thompson said: ‘This used to be one heaving place in the summer days! I remember dashing out in my lunch break to pop in there, such laughs! The Whitgift Centre has never been the same since!’ Other memories from the Lost Pubs facebook group is of ‘huge groups of skinheads standing
Early to mid 70s, judging by the chap in the flares. Note the changes even between here and its closure.
“This used to be one heaving place in the summer days. Such laughs! The Whitgift Centre has never been the same since.”
This picture was taken by the same guy as the one above, he says from around the same place but we’re not so sure. You can see the office block in the background but having looked around ourselves we surmise that The Forum was stood where the ‘central atrium’ now is, i.e the main open space where all the various arcades towards Boots and out toward WH Smith, along with the one toward the subway to Welesley Road all meet. In other words, near Waterstones, below Cafe Giardino.
outside, all drinking Skol.’ Debbie Kilby said: ‘I met my husband there on my 20th Birthday in 1985! – Fantastic place; Croydon was never the same once they pulled it down.’ But pulled down it was. Aged just 24 and operating under the name The Merchants’ Arms it was demolished on the 21st May, 1993, to make way for a re-vamped shopping centre which had no place for the art of the public house. Bad luck to change a pub’s name. In the end, The Forum wasn’t part of the future and didn’t belong to the past, at least not in
the way it does now. It was, in its odd and provincial little way, unique and I think the Lost Pub members are right, Croydon hasn’t been the same since it disappeared. If anyone has any more pictures of the Forum (colour pictures and
interior shots especially welcome) please email them to: nickboothjournalist@gmail.com. Visit and join the Lost Croydon Boozers group on Facebook at http://doiop.com/croyboo.
The holy grail. Nick Reeves’ shot of the interior, maybe taking the whole Roman theme a tad too far. And nice jumper, obviously...
The Forum in death. It’s bad luck to change a pub’s name.

PAUL DAVIS
ON STARDOM, AWARDS & MEETING YOUR HEROES. . .
R
egular readers may remember that we’ve met Paul Davis before. He’s the man who decided to make a documentary about legendary horror film ‘An American Werewolf In London’ called ‘Beware The Moon’ from his bedroom and ended up in Hollywood with John Landis, signing autopgraphs himself at the premier of the documentary and getting it released worldwide as an extra on the film’s Blu-Ray release. Not bad going for a 28 year old we thought, but when we heard that he’d since landed a part in Landis’ latest film, Burke and Hare, alongside Simon Pegg, Andy Serkis, Jess Hynes, Bill Bailey and Tim Curry, a cover feature in Croydonhello seemed only fitting. We caught up with Paul in The Green Dragon to find out more. Tell us the latest on ‘Beware The Moon’ “It’s been amazing. We had a premier at Frightfest last year, at The Empire, Leicester Square. I did a Q&A - scariest one I’ve ever done, in front of 1,500 people. You can’t see them, because of the light, but you know they’re there. I just kept repeating myself. I couldn’t think of anything to say. But yeah, that was pretty amazing. It was a dream come true really, to see the film on a screen that big, because I’d only ever really seen it on a laptop. “Then two weeks after that I went to LA for the launch of the Blu-Ray and we had a screening at Quentin Tarantion’s cinema, The New Beverley. We got Rick Baker (reknowned make-up artist on American Werewolf ) down and did another Q&A. That one wasn’t so scary because the New Beverley holds slightly less people, but we sold that out. It was the first time they’d ever done online ticketing, because the place is so old-fashioned, and they sold out within about 18 minutes, and they still had a line going around the block. It was like the old footage of the original Star Wars where you see people queueing around the block - it was like that I was thinking, ‘this is my film!’. They turned away about 300 people, which is unheard of nowadays. It was mind-blowing.” How was it received critically? “I think I got two bad reviews out of about 100, and one of those was a tweet so I’m not sure it
Hello handsome: Paul and the wolf
“Seeing my film shown on the big screen at the Empire, Leicester Square was a dream come true” counts!” (It doesn’t - Ed) “Sales-wise, it’s done better than I expected - the week the DVD came out it was the highest selling catalogue title of the week, up against Wolverine , Army Of Darkness, Sean Of The Dead and Hot Fuzz, and it beat all of those, so I’m really really proud of it. “Oh, and it’s been nominated for an award! It’s kind of geeky but for horror fans it’s a big deal, we’re up for Best DVD extra at The Rondo Hatton Awards. I really want to win this year because I’ve been nominated three years in a row for my writing, but this is the first nomination for a film. They do a ceremony at a convention called Wonderfest in Kentucky.” Are going to go over there? “If we win, I may jump on a plane just to go to the ceremony, if we don’t. . .” (CroydonHello has learned since the interview that Beware The Moon did indeed win Best DVD extra, so our heartiest congratulations to Paul and all involved! - Ed) “So the aftermath has been a litle bit overwhelming ridiculously overwhelming in fact. And it’s got me a bit of work. . .” 24
So we hear! You’ve landed a part in the new John Landis film ‘Burke & Hare’. So how did you manage to wangle that? “Ha ha! I asked! I sent John (Landis) an e-mail, because I’d already been cast in a werewolf movie ...” Really? What’s that all about? “Ah, well, just before Frightfest I got friendly with Neil Marshall, who directed ‘Dog Soldiers’ and his wife, so I went to dinner with them and was introduced to a make-up artist called Sean Harrison who works on the Harry Potter films. I was already sat down when he walked in and then I got up and towered above him (Paul is 6’8”), and he looked up at me and said ‘I’d love to put you in a monster suit!’ “As it turns out he was starting work on a film called ‘Gladiators versus Werewolves’, so I thought ‘ok, that sounds like a b-movie, schlocky-horror type thing’. My kind of thing, in fact, so he talked to the director and they got back to me and said ‘do you want to be a werewolf?’ and I was like ‘yes please!’. It’s set in Roman occupied Britain and I play the youngest werewolf in a pack of three! It’s being written as a trilogy. “I’ve already had all the moulds done, I had a complete body cast, which was unreal. They did the head cast first, which was quite peaceful actually like being in a flotation tank, and then you hold onto these two posts while they cover you from head to toe in plaster. As it sets you’re sort of propped up so it feels like you’re floating. That was an unbelievable experience. The thing about it is once they’ve made the costumes there are all extensions and things and I look out of the mouth, so I’ll end up being about 8ft tall! “So, because of that I had to get some head shots done, and I was watching an episode of ‘Extras’ and I just thought, ‘I could do that’ so I sent a message to John Landis, and was very surprised to get a reply the next day saying I could read for a part in Burke and Hare - I didn’t expect him to call my bluff - and then he offered me a part. I’m not allowed to say what part I play but I did a scene with Tim Curry, which was pretty awesome, he’s a lovely guy. I do get a really embarassing close-up in the film. The lovely thing was that I got to experience first hand all the things that people say about John Landis when he’s working. He tickled my feet!” This must be like a dream come true for you, from making a film in yur bedroom to being in films yourself. . .
Hall of Fame: Paul with John L:andis. . .
. . .Simon Pegg and Jessica Hynes. . . . . .and some fans of his own at Frightfest. How cool?

ast month we had a letter from a reader registering his disappointment that BEANOS record store in Middle Street was no longer there and had been replaced by “something called STIFF”. Records were made for peple like him who cood not play proper music on acount of being old an having hearing aids - DJ_nautyboy -----------------------------------------These old people with hearing aids should be sent to a clinic to cure them of it and made to wear a
condom all the time. - less_children_is_more_334 -----------------------------------------put the condom on his head and let him sufocate, we say. Men R all bastards and shag girls after bying them drinks when they do not no what they R doing and then they have babies wich are stealing all the oxygen in he world. - Emily_girls_against_bars -----------------------------------------Emily, U speak 4 us all. Power 2 U. - Justice_4_vicitms -----------------------------------------What is everyone making a fuss about BEANOS for? I don’t miss it at all. All it sold was old records and CDs and most were crap and no use to anyone. I am glad they have gone and I hope that Derek the owner can live with the fact
that he ripped off everyone and became a multi-millionaire in the process. The new Under-Cover Market, STUFF, is a load better than BEANOS ever was. - Karl_movin_on -----------------------------------------Karl, U speak 4 us all. Power 2 U. - Justice_4_vicitms -----------------------------------------You can trust the goverment to take everything from the peple Benos was for the peple and a part of the peple and it is not here becase the concil took the shop away before we could squat it and now derik is in prison for ford and he never ripped anyone off as he was A MAN OF THE PEPLE. i want to say a bigup to him and pleas relese him - Big_in_merton
Prince Charles should be told about this as he is a man of the people :-) - Lesley_1971 -----------------------------------------Not be’in funny or nothin but isnt he a bit mental and talks to trees an that? - royal_watcher -----------------------------------------Now look, I feel I have to defend all that has been said about BEANOS and the new enterprise that has been created called STUFF. The days of records have gone and, with them the people who had the passion and enterprise to sell them which is a great shame BUT we have to move on. What the clever guy that ran BEANOS has done (I actually do not think his name was Derek) is to create something absolutely amazing in converting the fabulous old
building that was home to ‘The Greatest Second-Hand Record Shop ~ Anywhere” into an exciting Market Place with 50 Stalls and a Café that is absolutely unique. You only have to visit it and you will see. Please stop complaining about the demise of BEANOS and embrace the birth of STUFF! - Barry222.gov.uk -----------------------------------------Barry U speak 4 us all. Power 2 U. - Justice_4_vicitms -----------------------------------------Hello royal watcher. U R a good man I am sure but you musnt say that prince charles is a few gems short of a coronet. He is a top man and if anyone can release derek he is your man. Trust me I have connections. - purple_rain_afkap
I NOTICE THAT THE POLICE ARE KEEPING QUIET ABOUT THIS LETS ALL MARCH AND THEN THY WILL LISTEN - fire_power_2_the _people (sent from my blackcurant phone) -----------------------------------------i went into stuff market in middle street just now and it is better than i thought in spite of what you all said it is really brilliant and i reckon it is the best thing to happen to croydon ever. - shopper_holik -----------------------------------------Shopperlolik. Your words are full of shit. Eat your words. LOL - psalms_14_true_religion -----------------------------------------shoperolk U speak 4 us all. Power 2 U but stuf is so KOOL man you got 2 chek it out - Justice_4_vicitms

“Totally! It’s kind of hit me unexpectedly because after Beware The Moon I expected to just trudge along and keep writing, and beforehand I never dreamed in a million years. . . When we first started making the film there was no guarantee even that John would be involved, so it’s amazing. I feel very privileged. When I first met him I was wearing my ‘American Werewolf In Croydon’ t-shirt, and he looked at it and said ‘What’s a Croydon?’” So what’s next? “I’m trying to keep the momentum going - I’ve got an idea for a film set entirely in Croydon, and I’ve written a horror short story. I do most of my writing on the toilet, that’s where the inspiration hits me! But the main thing I’m working on now is a sit-com type mockumentary. “I’ve not being doing a lot recently because my Dad passed away suddenly recently. That’s another reason why I’m so keen for ‘Gladiators v Werewolves’ to be made, as they’d employed my Dad, who was a photographer, as the set photographer, and me to so a ‘making of ’, so I really want it to be made.” Having come so far, what would you rather be now, and actor, film-maker or writer? ”I’ve no idea! The door is open, if I get more acting work, great. I still do my DJ set at Edward’s in Wimbledon (it’s not what you think, I do classic rock and movie soundtracks) every Tuesday night, we have a regular crowd which has taken ages to build up. It’s a good night. Also, recently I got back in touch with an old friend from Croydon who now works at Radio 1, and we’re doing a cinema themed night at The Bloomsbury Bowling Lanes, where they have the Big Lebowski nights, called ‘Reel Music’ which is very exciting, we’ve got Osymso and all sorts going on there (see advert, over - Ed). That’s about it, unless there’s anything you’d like to add? ”Well, there’s no harm in putting the word out that we’re always looking for financing for future films! Also, I am looking to do new things, and I’ll always try to encourage and nurture new talent, because that’s what John Landis did to me and if I can, I want to carry on in that tradition.” More info on Burke and Hare can be found at www.imdb.com - search for Burke and Hare. Septuagenarian agony aunt cum rock mutton Auntie May gets into the spring swing. . .
H
ello again, and welcome to another month of music, mayhem and silliness in AuntieMayLand. I started the month off in true ear-splitting splendour at Scream Lounge where we welcomed Dirty DC back to Croydon. I must admit, I really miss the Cartoon’s tribute band nights and a large group of old Cartoon regulars who obviously thought the same congregated
were note-perfect throughout. Iron On Maiden are booked at Scream for Friday 16th April (tickets available in advance from the venue) so let’s hope Scream keep on the tribute bandwagon and take over from where the Cartoon left off. The one downside I find at Scream is getting something to drink that agrees with my constitution. Not that I have a
It took all my resolve to not jump on stage and re-enact the great Sanderstead fart-lighting disaster of 1986. . . round the speakers for a night of AC/DC madness. I was warned that it was going to be loud and wasn’t disappointed. The speakers were doing an acceptable impression of a washing machine on fast spin (as I happily discovered half-way through) and Dirty DC
particularly delicate constitution – it’s just that lager gives me tummy ache, cider has a very bad reaction with my head the next morning and if I drink spirits as fast as I drink beer I end up rather skint (and completely unable to find my way home). Happily (or so I
thought) I discovered they were selling Newcastle Brown so I purchased a lovely brown bottle and was contentedly swigging away when a random punter stopped me with the words “You don’t want to drink that stuff, it gives you terrible wind!” Needless to say, I carried on drinking and tried to think of a way of turning the situation to my advantage – in this case I noticed a distinct lack of pyro on stage (probably due to the low ceiling and close proximity of the audience) and it took all my resolve not to jump on stage and re-enact the great Sanderstead fartlighting disaster of 1986. And talking of beer, I have noted that there is much more variety for the discerning bitter drinker in Croydon of late. The Green Dragon always has a good array of delightfully-named ales (especially
dirty dc
limehouse lizzy 32
when one of their Beer Festivals is running) and the Wetherspoon chain also excels in this regard. Edith and I have recently been happily conducting our own Beer Appreciation Nights, when we try to test as many ales as humanly possible in one evening, although I got some very funny looks when
next to a man with a face uncannily like a dead fish who demonstrated a complete inability to clap in time and spent most of his time staring open-mouthed at the heaving cleavage of a nearby lady. Limehouse Lizzy were awesome as they pumped out all Lizzy’s hits
Edith and I have recently been happily conducting Beer Appreciation Nights at the many real-ale vending pubs of Croydon. . . Edith sent me up to the bar to ask for a Golden Shower! Back to tribute bands, I popped along to the Boom Boom Club at Sutton to see the fabulous Limehouse Lizzy. The combination of a very low ceiling and rather high stage led to some amusing moments as the band attempted to disassemble the suspended ceiling with their guitars and Edith and I were delighted not to be the oldest people there for once! I was stood
along with a few requests from the crowd managing to incorporate a scintillating drum solo and a small organ and finishing on a high with Whiskey in the Jar. Other highlights this month included the Pure Rawk Awards organised by the lovely Nix at the Purple Turtle in Camden where I discovered the art of “speaking in Stoke”, Movie Stars Fancy Dress Night at the Ship, where, despite a disaster with my favourite boots, I
33
had a lot of fun (although I was slightly disappointed that the prize was won by someone who had obviously taken a quick trip to a hire shop) and their Charity Fundraising Night for Victim Support where just over £152 was raised – thanks to Andy for organising it and Junk Time Party and Cassettes for providing the music. Well that’s all for this month, folks. Edith’s dragging me out shopping for a new spring wardrobe and is intent on hunting down some jeggings, treggings, or slaggings or whatever they’re called. And I appear to have a pair of boots to replace. See you at the bar. Spring wardrobe. Combination clothing. Jeggings, treggings, slaggings, spirt, spunks. Women’s work - wine. Auntie May returns next month...
May contain news.
I
n keeping with this month’s theme, all (well, most) of our news this month is telly or film related. We start with massive congratulations to Croydon’s very own Andy Hunt, winner of ‘The K Factor’, the marvellous knitting competition on Harry Hill’s TV Burp for his creation Peter The Duck. Well done fella. Watch it here: http://doiop.com/peterduck. And while we’re at it, if you still haven’t seen Harry’s torch-song to Croydon, ‘I Love Croydon’, you can watch it here: http://doiop.com/ilovecroydon. Genius in every way. . . Film slash music news now, and after a mere six and a half years, Mat Martin, the drummer, or ‘Bonzo’ in the finest Led Zeppelin tribute band in the land, Boot-Led Zeppelin, has finally finished making the band’s film. Mat says, “The main feature covers three shows from 2004-2008 and includes all the major tracks that we/they did. Plus there's extras like the channel 5 and Sky News interviews we did before the Zep gig at the o2.” The film runs at about three and a half hours and is described as “a bloody epic”. Finishing touches are being applied as we speak and the DVD will be available to buy in the next couple of weeks from their website: www.boot-led-
zeppelin.co.uk, or at gigs - again see the website (or check Deep listings) for forthcoming dates. In more music, no telly, no music, oh, alright, telly and music news, read this “Are you Britain’s best undiscovered music act? Brand new prime-time music talent show, is looking for the UKs best music acts from all over the country. Are you Britain’s best undiscovered music act? If the answer is 'YES' then we want to meet you. We are looking for acts of all ages and all genres. You might be a phenomenal pianist, a solo singer, a rock band, a gospel choir, a one manband – or even play an instrument no one’s ever heard of as long as you can sing or play music, then you’re in! We will be holding nationwide auditions all over the country, giving you the chance to perform in front of a panel of celebrity judges – who will decide if you’ve got what it takes to be the next big thing.” If you’re interested visit: http://doiop.com/unsigned. STUFF! news now, and things are rocking along down at Croydon’s finest, well, stuff, emporium. The cafe is now being run by Esther, of Green Dragon fame (don’t worry, she’s not leaving the Dragon!) and there are a shed load more weekend
traders taking stalls. Friend of the mag Hound Dog Geoff will be there on occasional Saturdays doing caricatures (£5 I believe), there are vintage and retro clothes and a whole lot more nestling amongst the rest of the regular mongers of aromatherapy massage, kids clothes, choccies, sauces, t-shirts, jewellery, sweeties, art photography and everything else. If you haven’t been yet, get down there and if you have, get down there again to check out the new stuff. Nice one. Stuff, Middle Street (where Beanos was), just off Surrey Street, Croydon. And finally, in eating of hats news, a couple of months ago I said The Brief would die a death after the removal of the stage and live music. It turns out I was wrong, and following a massive refurb which has seen the cavernous interior divided into booths, it’s now pretty busy in there. It’s not the same, obviously, but it’s better than we thought it’d be, so get down there and say hello to Dom behind the bar. Last time we were in there they were doing bottles of Prosecco for £4.99. I can’t remember leaving. Good work fellas. And that is the end of the news. Please return to whatever else you were doing to avoid doing any work. Got news? E-mail: angela@deep-london.co.uk. Ta! Croydon’s answer to Fanny and Johnny return with a recipe from one of the best food-related films ever, Big Night. . .
F
or anyone who hasn’t seen Big Night, it revolves around two Italian brothers (Stanley Tucci (who also wrote and directed) and Tony Shalhoub) running a failing restaurant in America who gamble on one special night to try to save the business. As you’d expect, being Italians, the food is a central aspect, although there’s a lot more to it than that, and we’d recommend you see it. So there. Also, seeing as though Croydon’s answer to Fanny Craddock is part Italian (the good part), it makes us happy. We were going to print a recipe for ‘timpano’ a massive central feast in the film, but it’s also a gigantic pain in the arse faff to make. Then we were going to go for Risotto di Gamberetto (shrimp/prawn risotto), but that involved a lot of de-veining of prawns, which is grim, so, because seafood says ‘spring’ to us, and we’re also quite lazy, and a bit crap, we’ve gone for: Impepata Di Cozze E Arselle (Mussel and Clam quick stew), which is absolutely delicious, and serves 2. You will need: 300g Mussels (cleaned) 300g Clams (cleaned) 30ml dry white wine 400g tinned chopped tomatoes 3 garlic cloves half teaspoon of crushed dry chillies
2 tablespoon of extra virgin olive oil 2 tablespoon of chopped flat leaf parsley 2 slices of white rustic bread (preferably ciabatta) Salt to taste Method: 1) Finely slice 2 cloves of garlic. 2) In a large saucepan over a medium heat, fry the garlic and chillies for approx 20 seconds. Add in the chopped tomatoes with half a glass of water and leave to simmer without the lid for 8 minutes. 3) In the meantime, place another large saucepan on the heat and add in the mussels and the clams. Pour in the wine, cover with a lid and cook for 5 minutes until the shellfish have opened. 4) Once ready, tip the shellfish in the saucepan with the tomato sauce with the cooking juices and be careful not to pour the last few tablespoon of the juices just in case it is a bit gritty. 5) Stir well together, add in the parsley and leave to rest for 1 minute. 6) Brush the sliced bread with a little olive oil, place on a hot griddle pan (or under the grill) and toast on both sides until crispy and smoky. Once ready rub the bread with the remaining clove of garlic 7) Put the bread in the middle of a bowl and spoon the shellfish on top (or serve separately), serve immediately. DO NOT EAT any of the mussels / clams that have not opened. 8) Open a bottle of very cold Italian dry white wine, have a knees up, wave your arms about, enjoy! Buon appetito, amici. 35
How To clean & de-beard mussels & clams: 1. When selecting your mussels/clams, NEVER choose any that are chipped, broken, or damaged in any way. Also, never choose a mussel/clam that is open (if it is open, tap it - it should close. If it doesn’t, throw it away). The mussels / clams should be tightly closed and stored in a cool area where they can breathe. When you purchase your mussels/clams, make sure to immediately unwrap them at home so they can breathe, otherwise they might die before you cook with them. 2. Just before cooking, soak your mussels/clams in fresh water for about 20 minutes. As they breathe, they filter water and expel sand and so will have less salt / sand stored inside their shells. 3. Most mussels have what is commonly called a ‘beard". This is comprised of many fibres which emerge from the shell. To remove it, using a dry towel, grasp the beard and give a sharp yank out and toward the hinge end of the mussel. This method will not kill the mussel. If you were to pull the beard out towards the opening end of the mussel you can tear the mussel on the inside of the shell, killing it. Discard the beard. 5. Remove the mussels/clams from the water. Do not pour them and the water into a straining device because the sand has sunk to the bottom of the bowl. Pouring the mussels/clams and water into a straining device would cause you to pour the sand back on top of them. Place these mussels/clams into another bowl full of clean cold water. 6. Once the mussels have been soaked, use a firm brush to brush off any additional sand, barnacles, or other oceanic attachments. Rinse the mussels under cool tap water, and set aside. Dry with a towel before cooking.

What’s This? http://doiop.com/name Wherever you see a website address in our listings that has the prefix http://doiop.com (or has ‘bit.ly’ or ‘tinyurl’ in it) it means we’ve used an URL shortener to make it easier for you to visit sites (especially facebook event pages whose URLs are ridiculously long). The address given will still take you to the original site, be it facebook or wherever, it just makes it easier for you if you’re reading the mag and wish to type addresses into your browser to get more info etc. We know most of you know this, but some people have asked, so there you go.
