In honour of George Orwell, we’ve decided to fill this issue with things we really hate. Actually that’s a complete lie, it’s the same old we-love-bleedin’-croydon rubbish we’ve been championing for years. But what’s not to love? This month we have local beer, some Croydon t‘lympic hopefuls, festivals, films, Auntie May and, in something of a mind-bending ‘should have been in last month but wasn’t’ event, it’s the return of our former astrologer Mystic Mike! And no, he makes no more sense now than he ever did. Marvellous. Elsewhere, from having something of a paucity of listings last month, this month it’s gone a bit mental, especially the sports section due mainly to this Olympic thing that appears to be happening at some point this month. Don’t ask me, it’s the first I’ve heard about it - you’d have thought someone on the telly or something might have mentioned it, wouldn’t you? If I wasn’t hurtling towards a significant and worryingly large - candle-wise - birthday I would have put a little smiley face emoticon after that sentence, but I am, so I won’t. Speaking of birthdays, the Deep-London 9th Birthday / 100th issue party date is set for 21st July (which, incidentally, is the day of my significant and worryingly large - candle-wise - birthday). Actually, it’s less of a party and more of a sophisticated soiree, as befits my age... Anyway, details in the listings, and more details, as we dream up some sort of plan for the event, on our facebook page at www.facebook.com/deep-london nearer the time. In weather news, the 15th of July is St Swithun’s Day, which means, traditionally, that if it rains on that day, we’re going to have another 40 days of really rubbish weather, which is nice and will add an extra dimension of damp squibbery to the Olympic opening ceremony, where I imagine the overpowering smell of slighty wet sheep, if we can believe the reports of what’s going to happen, will be just the ticket and more than enough to show the world that Britain is a 21st century economic and sporting powerhouse that means business, yeah? Which brings us neatly onto the subject of our much promised Olympic Croydopoly - well it’s been slightly postponed, in keeping with every other aspect of my life, but THE greatest drinking and stupidsports game ever imagined by this very magazine will be revealed in the August issue and will run throughout that month and September for the Paralympics, or, as it shall forever after be known in Croydon folklore, the Paralytic-ympics. On which note I’ll say goodbye for another month. Let’s all hope the sodding sun comes out at some point in the near future but in the meantime try not to get washed away and if we don’t see you on the 21st (you can bring gifts, I won’t mind), we’ll see you all next month. Over the years he has gone from being an idealistic young man with a burning desire to make the world a better place, to a disillusioned and corrupt council official. His alcoholism has driven a wedge between him, his wife and their three children. When Daniel wakes up after another drunken night, he realises that he might be responsible for a murder. A dramatic act of redemption buys him public adoration, so much so that he has become a candidate in the race for Mayor.

He’s probably got more in common with Raskolnikov from Crime and Punishment, or Macbeth, in terms of what he’s done and his battle with his conscious and imagination, which is used stylistically by flashbacks in the film itself.” What is Daniel’s home life and relationship with his wife (played by Dervla Kirwan) and children like? “Daniel and his wife, before the children came along, were probably a

They are enthralled by his no nonsense determination not to treat the electorate like fools and by his openness about his personal problems and struggle with addiction. As his public star rises ever higher and he tries to repair the damage done to his private life, he is painfully aware that it could all come crashing down at any moment... Can you tell us about Daniel Demoys and his role in Blackout? “Daniel Demoys is an interesting figure in that he was once a very idealistic young man who got drawn into local politics and slowly allowed himself to become cynical and disillusioned, and he lost his ideals. He has an addictive personality and started to indulge himself personally, being addicted to alcohol and drugs. “At the beginning of episode one he meets a man (Henry Pulis played by David Hayman) who holds a mirror up to him, and he sees his reflection of who he really is and tries to destroy it. The drama then becomes a why-dunnit rather than a whodunit. “Daniel’s a contradictory character because he has a deep love for his wife and for his children, but he has pure

very successful, hedonistic couple of the Nineties. There was a great deal of hedonism and they were very much part of that, while being bright, shining political lights. The kids have come along and he’s carried on. There’s an element of mid-life crisis with Daniel, as well as everything else. He’s carried on that hedonistic path but it has stopped being enjoyable. It’s probably fair to say that his wife has been in denial about his addictions. It’s the only way she can deal with it, particularly while attempting to raise children. “What we’ve got within the film and with the three characters (Daniel’s two sons and a daughter), you see the differing impact on 4

children if a parent is an addict, and it manifests itself in different ways in the children. The impact of the addict on the family is a very major strand in the drama which sits alongside the thriller element. It is very much a thriller, and not just about the politics. The politics are the politics of a graphic novel, quite simplistic. If you examine what Daniel is expounding it’s probably communism but what’s foregrounded is the thriller element and the family element. Those are the two things that are primarily the motors of the three episodes.” Daniel finds himself opening up to a nurse, Donna (played by Branka Katic). Would you say she acts as his subconscious? “She definitely serves as a conscience figure. You can say that she’s possibly taking him through the 12 steps, if you analyse it, looking at

responsibility and humility. Donna allows him to confess to everything that he’s done. She is his friend more than anything. She gives him tough love and it’s an interesting relationship. She’s brilliantly played by Branka because it’s very easy to make a character like that purely a mouthpiece. Branka has humanised and grounded Donna, and given her humour, delicacy and subtlety.” Can you tell us about Daniel’s relationship with Sylvie (played by MyAnna Buring)? “MyAnna’s character and Daniel are both playing roles when they meet. It’s role play. He’s in an altered state because of the alcohol and drugs, and she, like him, is an addict and is addicted to danger and sexual danger. It’s very clear. You see her as a mum and then you see her in a noir-ish wig, and then there is her husband (played by Andrew Scott) who is also an addict and an obsessive. This theme of addiction is shot throughout all of the characters. What is interesting about Sylvie is that Daniel instinctively, in his alcoholic state, understands what she needs to fulfil her fantasies. So psychologically they’re wired up for each other in a very dangerous way.

Two addicts together, bringing hell down on themselves.” You have worked with Andrew Scott before (Lennon Naked, BBC Four). What was it like working with him again? “It was great working with Andrew, he played McCartney when I played John Lennon and I think he’s an excellent actor. I was really pleased when I heard he was going to join us on Blackout. He’s an actor I really love working with and admire. It’s a fantastic performance and his character (Detective Bevan) is similarly an addict. There’s a kind of brilliance to that character’s detection of what is going on and a brilliance to his doggedness. Bevan’s after the truth like a holy grail and he’s very decent in that way, but his obsession with his wife is the flip side of it. It’s the shadow side of him and his doggedness with finding who she is or isn’t sleeping with is very damaging to her and her children. So he, like Daniel, has a shadow side.” What made you want to be involved with this drama? “It’s always very interesting to be asked to play a character who on paper is unsympathetic. Characters who do the kind of things that Daniel does

don’t scare the audience. Audiences are very bright, and those of us who make great television continually underestimate the audience. They’re always ahead of us and they’re always willing to take difficult characters into their hearts because they know how difficult their own lives are. For example, Raskolnikov fascinates people because he does something that we all have nightmares and fears about doing. Macbeth does the same and that’s why go and watch those people and why we follow those characters, and Daniel does a similar thing. There’s a fascination in watching somebody trying to wriggle out of what they have done and that’s what we do with Daniel.” Can you relate to Daniel? “It’s that Dennis Potter quote that I’ve used before and I love. When he writes his characters he used to write them as half ape and as half angel, which is probably what you could say about human beings generally. Deep catches up with Mark and Simon, founders of the Cronx Brewery, as they embark on their beer adventure.

est we forget, Croydon has a long and illustrious history in brewing. Folks have been getting royally lathered on our very own ale since at least the 16th Century. In the 19th, Crowley’s and Overton’s (incidentally, the last incumbent Crowley in question was the father of Aleister Crowley, a fact we will return to at another time) which eventually turned into Page and Overton’s, Watney’s along with Nalder and Collyer’s were all big movers and shakers in the beer world, and all were here in Croydon (all hail the Croydon Party

take some pictures (none of which came out as my camera went mental and corrupted, so thanks to them for the pix from their fb page), and to ask some questions, the first of which surely has to be, why? “There’s such a huge real ale market, especially locality-wise and at the moment there are no breweries in Croydon or Sutton. We’ll be the first dedicated brewery in Croydon in 58 years - it’s nice to be able to bring it back - it’s a huge area with a big brewing heritage.” Mark, it turns out, is, or rather

So it should come as no surprise that at some point an enterprise should spring up to revive this halcyon heritage and restart the Croydon brewing industry. What may be a surprise, however, is that the enterprise in question - the Cronx Brewery - is the brainchild of one 29 year old and one 30 year old who have only been brewing beer since February. was, an alcohol wholesaler whose Dad introduced him to real ale at a young age, or rather, an ageappropriate age, and former city worker Simon got the ale bug at the Crystal Palace Real Ale Festival. The pair only met last year, but now, and after months of planning, the Brewery is imminent; “Our equipment is being delivered early next week, and, all being well, we’ll start brewing as soon as possible. It takes three to four weeks to get it to where we want it, so we should have a beer ready in early August. Actually it sounds scary when you say it like that!” “It’s just all moved really quickly, everything happens at once, and this is 6

the first business we’ve started up. As for most people in new businesses, at the moment it’s just us two, so we’re doing all the marketing, obviously all the brewing, applying for all the licenses and everything” What species of ales will you be brewing? “We’re starting with two or three ales, a standard bitter, London Pride-ish, a Porter which is like a dark stout type of thing and probably a much lighter blonde, hoppier beer. “We’ll start with those two or three and we’ll try to do some oneoffs and small batches - things to get people interested.” Interest here is the key - real ale recently has made real strides to shed its somewhat fusty image, but it still suffers from the problem of getting people who are convinced they don’t like it, to try it? “That’s the thing - we’ve got to try to change people’s perceptions of real ale - and hopefully we can do. We haven’t really marketed ourselves as your typical real ale brewery - the branding of the thing and the name, it’s more urban, more new, and I hope people can relate to that. Hopefully they’ll see it on the bar and think ‘that looks interesting, let’s try that’. “It has become a younger market than it was, a lot of young people are drinking proper beer,

good beer, and realising they can move away from bland, tasteless lager. “And it’s not just about pouring brown beer, there are a lot of exciting craft beers out there, using different ingredients - new world hops for example, which tend to be more citrus whereas traditional hops are much more subtle, more spicy or woody like Pride hops “It’s about promoting local ale, and getting people back into local pubs. Creating something exciting to get people back into pubs, because there’s such an issue with pubs closing.” You’ve had a couple of tasting sessions - how did they go? “We had some tastings of our Porter at the Crystal Palace Beer Festival and it went really well, we were one of the first beers to be emptied. Esther at the Dragon’s been really helpful, organising a tasting, which went really really well, we got a lot of positive feedback.” Where can we buy your beer,

when it comes out? “We’ve already spoken to the Half and Half, the Green Dragon and the Dog and Bull about stocking our beer and they’ve all seemed keen. “Obviously until we finalise a price and get the beer in existence we can’t guarantee who’s going to stock it but those three especially seemed keen to take it. “After that it’s a case of getting it into as many places as possible we’re going to start with cask ale first but we are going to do bottles. We’ve got a bottling plant. Well, I say plant, that sounds very grand, it’s a manual machine with us filling and capping the bottles.” So it’s not bottles whizzing along conveyor belts?

“One day...” Can you tell people what to look out for, apart from the Cronx logo - will your beers have names? “We will have names for our beers, but I think a lot of the breweries now are veering away from that trend of crazy names, and we are too. Croydon’s Hopefuls: James Dasaolu 100m James began his career in competitive athletics relatively late, first competing in 2006. However, Croydon Harrier Dasaolu made steady and significant improvements in his first few years; steadily improving his 100m personal best in 2006, 2007 and 2008. The 2008 season saw Dasaolu rise up the national rankings and introduced to the UK Athletics warm weather training camp. Dasaolu won the 2008 England under-23 championships and reached the semi-finals at the British Olympic Trials. The beginning of the 2009 season showed further improvement for Dasaolu.

At the seventh Graziano Della Valle meet in Italy, he recorded a new personal best of 10.15 seconds and finished in second place overall behind Aikines Aryeetey. Two weeks later he finished second only to European season leader Dwain Chambers. A 100 m win at the European Athletics meet in Geneva in June placed him among the top European sprinters for the first time. His new personal best time of 10.09 seconds made him joint second, with Simeon Williamson, in the season's 100 m European rankings and improved his chances for a place on the British relay team at the Berlin World Championships. The 2010 season saw Dasoulu make his senior GB debut when he represented GB at the European Championships in Barcelona after finishing second only to Dwain Chambers in the UK trials with a time of 10.23.

While at school, Martyn also tried his hand at rugby and football before he found his calling in life. His talent for 400m was discovered after he was asked to compete in the one-lap sprint to make up the points in a fixture for his club Croydon Harriers (he’s now with Loughborough Uni) The breakthrough that made the world sit up and take notice of the 6'5" sprinter was at the Aviva London Grand Prix in Crystal Palace, when he smashed through the 45-second barrier for the first time to win against World Indoor Champion Tyler Christopher of Canada and training partner David Gillick of Ireland. It took only three days for Martyn to show that London was not a one off, when he took the 400m by 8

Lawrence Okoye Discus Lawrence Okoye is the 19-year-old who boasts the British discus record, he also holds the longest throw by a teenager in history and is highly favoured to win a medal at London 2012. The former rugby union player began training full-time in the discus only last September and now at the age of 19 is competing on the senior circuit. Ranked 7th in the world with the National record of 67.63 metres to his name, he has put himself amidst the world’s best discus throwers this season. His remarkable achievements in the most ancient of Olympic sports speak for themselves and Lawrence has placed himself as a definite one to watch for London 2012 and beyond.

Septuagenarian agony aunt cum rock mutton Auntie May waves her Union Flag in a patriotic frenzy. . .

ello again to all my friends and relations. Edith and I have been having an extremely busy time lately, getting into training for the Olympics. Not in a competitive sense, you understand (Heaven forfend!) but to prepare for the media onslaught which is just going to get more and more excessive as we get closer to the opening ceremony. I’m just waiting for an Olympic-themed incontinence aid advert and I’ll have the full set. I have to say, I wasn’t prepared to sell my t-shirt collection, or anything else for that matter, for a ticket to the Games and Edith discovered that a pigeon had somehow got into her bank account rendering it completely useless at the

Still, we were able to warm up a bit round the flame along with the other 13 people there, although Edith was reprimanded for attempting to barbeque a sausage on it and we were forced to continue our warming up in the pub. The next day we’d unfortunately booked a trip to Brighton. Now I usually love Brighton but to save money on

We started the month patriotically with a spell of Diamond Jubileeness. As the Queen was busy, I had been asked to judge a Union Flag (not Jack unless you’re all at sea) Display Competition so we spent a fairly tedious evening with a mystified cab driver, cruising around the local streets marking, Come Dine With Me style, local flag exhibits, finally awarding Mr. Smith of West Avenue, Wallington the prize for his impressively original home-made creation. I was unable to watch the live concert on Monday due to my Paul McCartney allergy. Did you know that there was an urban myth that Paul McCartney actually died in 1966 and was replaced by a look-alike? Although why a lookalike would subsequently agree to marry Heather Mills is beyond me. Sadly (for me anyway) this rumour was scotched (due in part to a cranberry sauce reference) and ever since then the airwaves have been assaulted by such horrors as the Frog Chorus and Ebony & Ivory. But I digress. Instead, we thought

train fares, Edith and I had booked the tickets in March (when it was hot and sunny) quietly confident that it would remain hot and sunny into June. How wrong we were. Brighton was chilly and soggy, from top to bottom. We quickly repaired to the less salubrious Wetherspoons (the other one was packed) for ham, egg and chips to watch the Queen doing waving on TV and giggle at the teletext mistypes. was still pouring, so we gave up and traipsed back to Croydon, wet and cold. Moving quickly on to the end of the month, I spent a marvellous evening in the Ship helping them to raise money for the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society. Various talented local artists including Dave Sears, Dave Noir, Paul Obertelli, Elmo and Ray and Jo (Dirty Scavenger) donated their time to provide a fantastic night of acoustic entertainment. Everyone generously bought raffle tickets and paid £1 to get in and over £1,400 was raised. And so we come back to sport. I’ve managed to get through the football by supporting Germany on the strength of having Muller and Bender on the team, my favourite moment being when the commentator said he was waiting for a “Muller corner”. Wimbledon is still on as I write this, guaranteeing at least another week of rain. Then it’s only a hop, skip and a jump to the Olympics. Let’s just hope it all goes off swimmingly, the transport network holds up, McDonalds can supply enough fast food for all the visitors and competitors (do they really eat it?) and it stops raining for a little while. In the meantime, keep the flag flying and all that, and I’ll see you under the bar.

Iron Sky In recent years, Scandinavia has produced a bunch of quirky little comedies - the premise of this ludicrous Finnish production is so wonderfully silly that it’s almost impossible not to like it. And any film with a cameo from Udo Kier as some kind of space-Führer gets my vote! In 1945 the Nazis went to the Moon: in 2018, they reinvade. Got that? The film ends up being more than the premise suggests though. In fact, the invasion aspect plays a rather disappointingly small part. This might be due to budget restraints on this independent flick with the creators apparently opting for a few awesome CGI scenes rather than many mediocre ones. Time is spent instead on the various subplots which unfortunately are a little all over the place. Having said that the central character of Renate, a naîve Nazi who loses her innocence as she discovers the realities of the regime, is brilliant. The film is also maturely critical of today’s political structures. But even with these satirical issues to one side, Iron Sky is a sharp, smart, lovable sci-fi comedy - a little bit rough around the edges but with a lot of heart.

The Raid t’s fair to say that The Raid will be the most action-packed film you see this year. Maybe ever. It’s absolutely insane! This Indonesian martial arts film displays some of the best fighting choreography seen in years. A swat team of elite cops are sent to a block of flats to arrest a notorious drug lord, but when they find themselves trapped, they have to fight their way out of 30 floors of hell. It goes without a shadow of a doubt that fans of the genre will be drooling over the skill in this movie. Furthermore its intense violence and gritty essence will grip you like a hook. It’s certainly not a bad movie - the only problem is that there is simply too much action. You don’t really have time to appreciate the spectaculars you’re seeing. Worse still is that after a while it becomes a bit samey and boring. This film would have benefitted from a bit more plot filler, if only to make the fight scenes stand out more. It’s a bit like having a large spicy meal - at first you enjoy its intensity but eventually you hit a wall and it becomes a struggle to finish.

The Pact I’m going to go out on a limb and say that I thought The Pact was alright . There’s an awful lot to laugh at if you choose to be cynical - it’s pretty goofy and begins to spiral out of control towards the end, but as far as generic haunted house fodder goes, you’ll probably be pleasantly surprised. After her mother’s death, Annie returns to the hell that was her childhood home to help find her missing sister but upon arriving, she soon becomes aware of disturbing forces at work . The film does an admirable job of taking a mundane setting and making it a place of excruciatingly awkward terror. The Pact manages to use eerie paranormal imagery and deliver it with a punch that leaves you shaken. My only real big gripe is the strange emptiness of the characters who seem somewhat out of place in their own movie. Refreshingly, The Pact is not afraid to take some crazy ideas and run with them, leaving little to the imagination. However this also counts against it as the film gets increasingly more baffling. The Pact is ultimately silly, but has enough chills to keep you in suspense. Trash, but good trash.

Listed as 19th in the British Film Institute’s list of Top 100 British films, Chariots of Fires will be returning to the big screen for a limited time from the 13th of July. And if the re-release of Jaws last month wasn’t enough to float your boat, some bright spark at Vue Cinemas had the genius to screen it as a double-bill with Jurassic Park on the 29th of June: score.

Prometheus Now where do you begin? People have been way too over the top about this film - both positively and negatively. In short Ridley Scott’s epic return to sci-fi is a large-scale creation myth that deals with some of the most profound and basic themes in the genre: Who are we and why are we here? A group of scientists go in search of the origins of mankind, but when they arrive at their location, far more drastic questions are raised with deadly consequences as the crew find themselves fighting for their lives. The overwhelming achievement of this film is its stunningly beautiful set pieces. However there are a few issues that are difficult to excuse: Firstly some of the decisions made by characters are so ludicrous that they shatter this well-crafted illusion; Directly connected to this are the many unnecessary plot holes which could so easily have been avoided. There are moments of awe though, and the film deliberately leaves the audience hanging on several mysteries. Michael Fassbender is hypnotic in the role of David, making him the centre of your attention but ultimately Prometheus suffers from its teasing associations with Alien, which simply distract from its already powerful story.

An Evening of Troma hosted by Lloyd Kaufman. By Tom Dennett-Cook.

uring the late 70’s Troma Entertainment grew into a cinematic underground powerhouse, gaining an infamous reputation as a trashy slap in the face of mainstream taste and decency, influencing the likes of Tarantino and Rodriguez, and giving big breaks to Samuel L. Jackson, James Gun, Matt Stone and Trey Parker (and even turning down Madonna!). Almost 40 years on, Troma is one of the only independent studios still to be standing since the advent of the blockbuster. Recently the Prince Charles Cinema held an evening of Troma movies hosted by the company’s co-founder and figurehead, the legendary Lloyd Kaufman. The

event consisted of the screenings of Class of Nuke ‘em High, the UK premiere of Father’s Day and of course the all-time classic, The Toxic Avenger. Each film was to be introduced by Kaufman himself, who was to also taking part in a Q&A session, while other activities included the handing out of ‘Troma diplomas’ to those who had helped organise the evening, and a raffle. We were also fortunate enough to get an exclusive interview. During the Introductions and Q&A's Lloyd was happy to humour fans with his mixture of quick wit and vulgar language. express themselves without the censorship of mainstream cinema which is forced to appeal to everyone and therefore limits creativity. But what seems to really anger him are the excesses of Hollywood - when we asked him about his views of contemporary cinema he stated; “It’s an obscene age. It’s an age of over-consumption... I’m sure in the fullness of time people will look back on this age and say ‘Hold it. Are you telling me the world had seven billion people, five billion who were living on less than a pound a day? And Tom Cruise was getting twenty-five million dollars?’” In contrast, Kaufman favours the minimalist approach, for example, criticising the trend of expensive remakes of cheap films, he has decided to start work on a remake of Class of Nuke ‘em high for less than its already budget original costs - seemingly just out of principle. Troma, however, has fallen on hard times. Insisting it’s the victim of ‘economic blacklisting’ by the larger Hollywood conglomerates, Troma has next to no distribution and is practically broke. Kaufman and his wife (the New York State film commissioner) were forced to spend their life saving on their last film, Poultrygeist: Night of the Chicken Dead, and it has been announced that Troma is allowing large scale remakes of The Toxic Avenger and Mother’s Day, something Kaufman begrudgingly agreed to out of desperation. But it’s not all doom and gloom in order to survive, Troma now finds itself expanding beyond its original light-hearted boundaries. Father’s day is a hilarious yet

graphic film about serial killers and incest, distributed but not produced by Troma. Kaufman told us of several other projects that Troma is assisting with which are far darker and pessimistic than previous works, and how he was excited by the possibilities of these new avenues. It seems that it’s Troma’s underdog spirit and ability to adapt that has kept it alive for the last 4 decades. As Kaufman puts it; “We’re the herpes of the movie industry. We won’t go away!” We were keen to dissect what exactly Troma’s counter-cultural image actually meant - when asked about the Troma philosophy, Kaufman exclaimed that Troma films stir up emotions you simply don’t get with Hollywood; “Like a ride you’ve never been on.” For him, Troma’s purpose was to give artists the opportunity to stand up on their own; to give other ‘likeminded souls’, a chance to ‘make films that come from the heart and soul.’ His message to artists was that they must suffer for their art and shameless self-promote; “I think the artist should get out there and whore for his art nobody else is going to do it’.

“As an artist the most valuable thing people can give me is their time. It’s worth much more than money” Despite what his profanity may suggest, Kaufman is a welleducated man. A student at Yale, he was able to illustrate his arguments with references to Picasso, Van Gogh and Shakespeare. Sometimes a group may label itself ‘underground’ as a way of selling ‘niche’ products: paradoxically requiring a mainstream for its oppositional identity. So we put this problem to Mr. Kaufman. He was adamant that nothing could be further from the truth, as this has never assisted sales. He was also keen to stress that bigger studios do their best to wipe independent studios out; “We don’t rely on them, that’s for sure. They kill us. There’s no other Tromas... We’re a merit they’ve killed off everybody else.” But we pressed the point further - What if Troma was to receive

mainstream success? Wouldn’t that be seen as selling out by hardcore Troma fans? Again Kaufman was quick to dismiss this as conformist; “That’s absurd. That would be like someone likes me because I’m wearing rags, and then if I’m wearing a bow-tie and an expensive shirt they would not like me. I think if I made good movies they’ll like me. But if I sell out and make sh*t... they’ll hate me.” For Kaufman, it’s not even about mainstream verses underground really - it’s about passion verses laziness. Troma may have hit hard times. But it has before, and always finds a way. Kaufman’s blasé attitude to profits and simple disgust over the excesses of Hollywood means that cashing in his integrity is never an option. When questioned as to whether he objected to fans downloading films for free, Kaufman simply put it; “As an artist I believe the partnership should be between the fans and the artist.
