deep online at: www.deep-london.co.uk • www.issuu.com • www.facebook.com/deeplondon • twitter @deep_london Hello there.. ...and welcome to isue 99. Sorry, I’m a bit distracted at the moment, I thought I just spotted the sun, but no, it was merely an illusion caused by yet another massive black rain cloud moving overhead. What the bleedin’ hell is going on, that’s what I want to know - I’m not built for this weather, I can tell you. And other such meteorological musings. Still, it passes the time doesn’t it, in a month which seems to me to be the calm before the storm, if you’ll pardon the reference to yet more rubbish weather, as we gear up to a HUGE summer of MASSIVE events. And can I just say, at this juncture, that it was nice of the Queen to have the presence of mind in 1952 to coincide her Diamond Jubilee precisely with our 9th birthday and 100th issue, just so we could all get an extra day off to celebrate. Cheers Your Madge, very big of you. Talking of our big event, we have actually started making plans for a party, which we’ll reveal the details of next month, when we’ll also unveil our Croydon pub Olympics wheeze. Possibly. AND we hear a rumour that Mystic Mike may make a birthday return, but it depends whether he can be arsed or not. But enough of the future, back to the present and this issue, which is sadly Auntie-May-less, but never fear, she’s just on holiday and will be back next month, and in the meantime we’ve got Matt LeBlanc, which is nice, if you like that sort of thing, as well as the marvellous Tamsin Greig and Stephen Mangan, a trip to the Joiners Arms to celebrate an anniversary, some folk music, covers and our regular film and techie slots with Tom and Steph respectively, so the usual old rubbish you’ve been reading, for nish, for the last ninety eight times it’s been thrust in front of you. In other news, as you can probably tell from another meandering editorial, the organisational issues mentioned last month are somewhat ongoing, and unless someone wants to donate to me versions of Quark and Photoshop that don’t require the Classic environment to run (or a new mac with new versions installed, hint hint) they look set to continue, compounded, into the near future at least. In other words, my faithful old Mac is nearing the end of its lifetime, and all my worldy-worn programmes are too old. Sadly, I know the feeling... Still, life begins at 100, so until next month, Avanti, Allons-y, Your Bonsai Editor Cheers! Angela xxx 1

Deep catches up with the stars of the award winning and savage UK / US co-production comedy Episodes, Matt LeBlanc, Tamsin Greig and Stephen Mangan, ahead of the much anticipated second series. . .

F

or those that missed the first series of the award-winning, critically acclaimed comedy Episodes, written by David Crane (Friends) and Jeffrey Klarik (Mad About You), a quick recap. Essentially, Matt LeBlanc plays an outrageous version of himself, a surprising, multifaceted role against Stephen Mangan (Green Wing and Dirk Gently) and Tamsin Greig (Black Books and Friday Night Dinner), who play Sean and Beverly Lincoln, an English couple whose BAFTA-winning sitcom is remade for US audiences and corrupted beyond recognition. In series one, Sean and Beverly are lured to Hollywood to adapt their muchloved British boarding-school sitcom, Lyman s Boys . However, the intelligent original is soon mangled by the US TV

working together. As the series progresses, we are plunged deeper into the twisted world of making television. It s a portrait gallery of megalomaniac network executives, surgically-enhanced actresses and naked stalkers who appear unexpectedly in your kitchen. Through it all, Sean and Beverly struggle to rediscover the love they had when they started their American adventure, while Matt struggles to reclaim the stardom that was once his. Matt says: “When the second season starts, we are all doing our best to navigate this awkward love triangle. People ask which Matt is the real me, but the writers will take a seed from my real life and grow it into an idea. I don t mind if people think Matt LeBlanc on

“My whole career I’ve played politically correct characters. To not worry about those constraints is such fun. Now it’s like ‘**** all that’!” system into Pucks! for which the network insist on replacing the lead actor (an elderly, erudite Shakespearean veteran played by Richard Griffiths) with Matt LeBlanc and turning the character into a hockey coach. Matt comes on board, and soon Sean and Beverly find themselves in a complicated triangle which threatens to destroy not only their TV show, but also their marriage. By the end of the first series, all three are bloodied and bruised, with hearts broken and friendships ruined. That s when the network calls to give them the good news: their show is being picked up for a full series. On Matt s excitement, and Sean and Beverly s dismay, we end the series knowing that they ll be forced to work together despite the complete mess they ve made of their lives. The second series picks up four months after the end of the first. Sean and Beverly s marriage has been blown apart by Beverly s fling with Matt, and Matt s friendship with Sean appears to be beyond salvage. But as their sitcom Pucks! is about to premiere, all three are forced to find a way to continue 4

screen is the real me because it means we have done a great job of creating a believable character. “My whole career I have played very politically correct characters and to not have to worry about major network constraints - you can't say that or you can't do that gesture or put your hand there or refer to those - is such fun. Now it's like ‘**** all that’!” He was equally amused by the reaction of TV bosses in Hollywood after the series went out in the US. “The industry in LA has really embraced the show. It's funny to hear certain people say I know who that character is based on, it s so and so , and I know it's really based on them! The show isn’t just about Hollywood TV system, it’s about three people and the intricacies of relationships.” For Matt, the most upsetting part of his fling

with Beverly was that he lost his best friend Sean, so while Beverly tries to save her marriage, he is trying to get his “bromance” back on track. “We do eventually patch things up because we have to, don't we? He comes back to me kicking and screaming! Beverly and Matt are on the same side of the argument because Sean won't forgive Matt either. There are a lot of weird scenes with the three of us.” How it would work, taking a version of who he is and twisting it into a largerthan-life character, was the only thing that gave him any hesitation when he was first approached by the show’s creators. Rather than set the boundaries himself, he agreed to tell them if he thought the scripts went too far, but so far he has never ruled out any aspect of his life for comedy. “There is no handbook for this,” he says. “We decided we would navigate through it together and anything that I am not comfortable with we won't do, but it’s been really fun. The only time I’ve felt I had to call someone in my life to explain was one moment in the first season where Matt goes to his ex-wife's house and uses a very derogatory term. So I called my ex-wife and said, ‘This is going to come up, and it's not about you. The guy uses the word because he doesn't understand the ramifications’. And she said, 'That's fine, I don't watch it!’” For Tamsin Greig, the first question she’s now constantly being asked is ‘what was it like kissing Matt LeBlanc?’ “What's so interesting is the number of women - really brilliant, professional, educated, dynamic women - who have said to me 'what was it like?’”, she

laughs. “I’m sure no one said to Matt 'what was it like kissing Tamsin Greig, that must have been a real highlight of your career?' He is just a bloke and actually kissing is so technical, it's about being at the right angle and having the mouth in a certain position, it's really not about what you are doing. You can't say 'what was it like?' because it wasn't a real kiss.” But the kiss, and what went with it, has shaped the whole of series two, as Beverly, Sean and Matt are forced to work together, whilst coping with the aftermath of the drunken encounter. Tamsin says: “Beverly and Sean’s positions are diametrically opposed to the first series where she didn't want to be there and he did. Now Sean is there because his contract says he has to be, while Beverly is there because she wants to save her marriage and she knows if they go home their marriage is over.” It also means that she and Matt are now on the same side, trying to make amends for what happened. “They are now interestingly allied

Despite her success with hit shows including Green Wing, Black Books and Friday Night Dinner, Tamsin has never been tempted to try her luck in the US and says she has no ambitious masterplan for a career in Hollywood. She says: “I am not stupid - I'm not young and I'm not beautiful. The beauty of this show is that it’s made over here, but you get to experience a bit of America as well, so you get to dip your toe in that world. If a job fell from heaven that was in America I'd have a go, but I don't feel compelled to go and hunt it down. I am interested in shows that are not out-and-out gag fests: you

“I’m sure no one said to Matt ‘what was it like kissing Tamsin Greig, that must have been a real highlight of your career...?’” because they both lost Sean. They want to keep Sean there and they both want to win his heart back.” Tamsin says a lot of actors and directors have told her the series struck a chord as they watched Sean and Beverly struggle to keep their comedy’s integrity, despite the pressure from the LA TV industry. “A number of actors have said they went into a cold sweat when they watched the scene with Richard Griffiths because that happened to them, it is so brutally real. Although it is so excruciatingly funny it is shockingly painful when that happens. That people have that amount of power to reduce people in that way.” But she believes it is Matt’s willingness to take the mickey out of his image and the cult of celebrity that has made the show such a success. “Matt is a game bird because it blows out of the water this idea of celebrity and that you can possibly know them from glossy magazines and paparazzi photographs. So for him to play an invention of Matt LeBlanc is such a brilliant way for him to say you don't really know. That might happen, that might not happen - you just don't know.”

see the truth of a broken heart behind them. That is what life is like, it's really funny, you see funny things as soon as you step out of the room, but underneath that is a whole bag of broken hearts. It's that real pain and that real hilarity that makes life so intriguing.” Stuck in the middle in series two, and coming out fighting after Matt has slept with Beverly. is Stephen Mangan, who plays Sean; “I don't want to give too much away but don't mess with Mangan. I damaged Matt LeBlanc - what can I say? Acting is a tough business... “Sean came out to Hollywood full of naivety and optimism. He was excited by the prospect of working in TV in the States. But his show is horrible and his wife has slept with Matt LeBlanc. He is not unmarked by that, he's more serious and more angry. The experience has been hard on him,” says Stephen. But even though he is still reeling from the collapse of his marriage, it doesn’t stop him having a fling of his own with sexy “Pucks!” star Morning Randolph (Mircea Monroe). Stephen says: “He's not cheating on anybody, he's not being unfaithful because he and Beverly are not together. 6

And it was his birthday and she was up for it. Who was it going to hurt?” The show reunited Stephen and Tamsin after their triumphant collaboration on Green Wing, and he says it has made playing husband and wife much easier. “Sometimes, when you play husband and wife, you are meeting the other person for the first time. But we have this real relationship where we know each other so well, and we have known each other for so many years, and we make each other laugh, which is all a big bonus.” He and Matt have also struck up a friendship and Stephen went to stay with him in his home in California. “There's nowhere in the world he can go without being recognised and causing excitement. It's interesting how invisible you become walking around with him. I'm not massively famous, a few people know who I am, but that level of interest and hassle is extraordinary and he handles it incredibly well.” But Matt has yet to take up Stephen’s offer to show him some of his favourite aspects of London. “I can’t drive him around in a Ferrari like he did with me, so instead I've been trying to get him to come and see Tottenham Hotspur play football, but I don't think there is much hope of that. He can't believe a sport lasts 45 minutes without a break and the level of catering is not high enough - a lukewarm chicken and mushroom pie won't do...” Episodes returns for a second series on BBC Two from 11 May 2012 at 10pm.

Joseph Topping, nascent folk phenomenon, comes to Croydon. . .

J

oe Topping is a singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist from the Wirral, whose musical journey so far has been as colourful as it has varied. Joe has always been surrounded by music; his dad, Tom, who in addition to being a semi-pro musician ran a folk club and put on gigs by people as varied as Billy Connelly to Stephan Grapelli, from Martin Carthy to blues musician Blind Jessie Fuller. Many of these influences filtered down to Joe who is playing anything from traditional British folk music to Delta blues slide guitar. Joe also “has a gift to write songs that will last and that others will want to sing” (John Wright) and “one of the most beautiful voices I have heard” (Chris While). At gigs you are just as likely to hear him playing the mandolin, bouzouki, harmonica, dobro or banjo as you are the guitar. Joe is adventurous, whether living and travelling around America and Canada in a pick-up truck or walking across the Namib Desert in aid of a landmine charity. He is ever looking to be challenged and the summer of 2006 saw him undertake his biggest adventure yet: a 1,400 mile solo walk across America. With an old Gibson guitar strapped to his back, Joe walked from Chicago and the shores of Lake Michigan in the north, south to New Orleans and the Gulf of Mexico. A journey rich in musical flavour and history: Chicago, St Louis, Nashville, Memphis, the Mississippi Delta, Baton Rouge; sleeping along the way in motels, cornfields, cotton fields, graveyards, backyards and sugar plantations, meeting musicians and characters along the road which have added to and inspired Joe’s own music, before finally - and three pairs of shoes later – being marched into New Orleans by The New Wave Brass Band. As his trek across the Namib Desert was for a landmine charity, his walk across America was to, and indeed did, achieve raised awareness and funds for New Orleans musicians displaced by Hurricane Katrina.

(www.nomrf.org). On his return from America, Joe accepted an earlier invitation to join local band, Elbow Jane. Since then, Elbow Jane has gone from strength to strength, recording the critically acclaimed album “England Stone” and playing the main stages at many British folk festivals. They’ve been described as “Masterful purveyors of harmonic folk” NW Enquirer. The band’s latest album “Three Side Island” was released in March 2009 on the Fellside label. Joe’s obvious talents have also been seized upon by folk/rock legend Ashley Hutchings who in December 2007 asked him to join his band, “The Rainbow Chasers” alongside Ruth Angell and Jo Hamilton. Since Joe joined the Chasers have been playing in arts centres and theatres across the UK and Italy. A new album is planned for 2010. (“The best acoustic group in the country” Phil Beer, Show of Hands.) Joe has worked with many well known artists from the folk/roots world including Chris Leslie and Gerry Conway (Fairport Convention), Martin Allcock (Fairport, Jethrow Tull, Beth Nielson Chapman) and Chris While and Julie Matthews among others. Joe’s new solo Album “Ghosts In The Shadows” was released on Fellside early in 2010 and has been getting good radio airplay around the country including radio 2. It features songs inspired by, learnt on or written on his walk across America. Songs ranging from traditional folk music to acoustic blues to country influenced to 8

jazz with musicians Miranda Sykes on Double Bass (Show of Hands) and Joe Wright on Fiddle and mandolin. It’s garnered positive reviews: “… A beautifully crafted album, played to perfection, fused with passion and heart” Maverick Magazine; “ … Heartfelt vocal backed by intricate, intensely accomplished guitar work” fRoots magazine; “An innovative resonator guitar style and a real song writing talent” Folk on Tap; “A cracking album” Mike Harding, BBC radio 2 Joe comes to Croydon on 14th of May and as his blurb says; “Book him for your folk club now, before he ends up on the guest list of every festival next summer! “ Joe Topping, 14th May at 8pm, Croydon Folk Club, Ruskin House 23 Coombe Road CR0 1BD. ast Sunday saw the Glamorgan pub on Cherry Orchard Road in East Croydon continue its long and admirable tradition of charity fundraising with another night of top quality music. This night was in aid of Children with Cancer, and sadly, due to other commitments, we couldn’t make it down for the whole night, which was hosted by actor Deka Walmsley (The Pitmen Painters) and featured Lauren Adams, Gary Jordan, Michael Peavoy and more. What we did make it down for, however, were The Twirlies, whose semi-ishregular appearances at the Glam are always welcome. Essentially a covers band, The Twirlies are possibly one of the best, if not best connected, covers bands around. James, one of the lead singers, tells me that all of the members hail from the world of musicals and musical theatre in London, either as musicians or musical directors - one of their number, for example, was the Musical Director of ‘Billy Elliott’. Well connected, see. Apart from their excellent covers, such as stuff from The Commitments, a stonking version of Free’s Alright Now and a host of other classics, I must say that the warm-up music for the band was some of the best I’ve heard for any local gig, ever, as you’d expect from such a musically-bented line-up, with Quincy Jones and the Meters and the like. The crowd are clearly Twirlies regulars (Twirlie-ettes?) and may also possibly, we suspect, be mainly from musical backgrounds as when they were asked to sing along, they did - all amazingly in tune and in time! I have no doubt, being the charitable fellows that they are, that The Twirlies will be back at The Glam supporting more good causes soon, and we’d strongly suggest that you take the chance to see them, have a singalong (but only if you’re not tone-deaf) and be charitable yourselves into the bargain. Result! For more information on the Children with Cancer Charity please visit www.childrenwithcancer.org.uk 10

Forget the Diamond Jubilee, it’s time to meet one Mavis Porter, doyenne of Woodside Green, who is about to celebrate her Ruby Anniversary as landlady of The Joiners’ Arms

I

t’s not every day someone celebrates a Ruby anniversary, so when Rob, he of Dr Smutglove drummer fame, told us that the landlady of his local, the Joiners Arms in Woodside Green, was about to mark 40 years behind the bar, we thought it time, not least because we haven’t had a drink up that way in a while and remembered it as being a rather pleasant, leafy place, to board a tram and say hello. As it transpires, Mavis’ actual anniversary is on the 9th May, with apt celebrations planned, but we had actually forgotten what a nice pub the Joiners’ is - variously described as something of a menagerie and ‘a country pub without having to travel to the country’, the look of the place shows off Mavis’ eye for a curio - she readily admits to being a hoarder, but has put this to good use - every wall is covered with items of interest, which makes the Joiners’ a magnificent place for a solo drink, you can spend the time you would otherwise spend engaged in speaking utter drunken rubbish with perusing the artifacts... Over the years Mavis has been given many fantastic items which find their place all around the walls, including, amongst many, many others, a stuffed fox, a suit of armour, horse brasses of all descriptions, a coat of arms, a stag’s head and stuffed fish (and some very pretty live ones in tanks). Pride of place goes to the magnificent silver Tiffany cash register on the end of the bar. It’s clear when you walk into a pub whether its character has been created (see any O’Neill’s outfit) or evolved (see The Woodman, Bishops, Little Bay), and this one has definitely evolved. Brilliant! But back to the lady of the day, and it turns out Mavis is originally from West London and she told us that before becoming the landlady here she worked at the Courage Brewery in Cumberland Avenue. The Joiners’ was her first pub and she has “stayed because I liked it so much”. She lives above the pub and

does everything around the place, including the cleaning “it keeps me fit and I find it very rewarding.” The pub runs a hugely popular karaoke night, and Mavis herself, being keen on Country and Western, has been known to belt out a tune or two. As you’d expect from someone with such a long tenure, Mavis has seen a lot of changes both in the pub and the Woodside area. Apparently there used to be a small public bar which has been knocked through and an extension (completed by a local guitarist) where the Karaoke machine and dining tables are. She told us that the Woodside area back then was much more “a proper village” with bakery, chemist and hardware shop, although the area, and especially the pub, retains a village feel with a distinct identity unlike so many more hamlets around the Croydon area, despite the inevitable rise of the takeaway outlet along the high street. Mavis points out that the last few years have not always been easy. As with most pubs, the smoking ban (still don’t get me started), the recession and the ever increasing price of a drink have put the pressure on, but the Joiners’ is a genuine local; the regulars keep it going and it enjoys a bustling trade, mainly thanks to all the effort that Mavis puts in. So why stay for forty years? “I’ve always liked it here, it’s a friendly place, a nice pub. It always has been”. It seems so, as Mavis’ son Simon has been doing a lot of research into the history of the place. He kindly provided with some of the pictures for us Mavis in her heydey behind the original bar and still pulling pints while pregnant with him. He has 12

the deeds for the sale of the land from 1864 when it became a pub, which will no doubt be framed and found a space on the pub wall somewhere. Prior to that there was a blacksmiths on the site and the present building was 4 cottages knocked together. They have a list of the landlord’s names up to the 30’s which he hopes to complete up to the present day - he even has a photo of one of those landlords of the 30s. It’s a shame we haven’t made it up to the Joiners more often - it’s a very friendly and comfortable place (and apparently a thriving hub for musicians), a real place of character in a world of chain boozers - in fact, it’s that rarest of beasts, a real pub. Oh, and it has a beer garden too. We only popped in for a quick chat and stayed all afternoon, getting quite merry as a result. Well done Mavis and good luck to you. We will be back to say hello and jump every time we walk past the bar and come face to face with a fox. Mavis Porter and The Joiners Arms, Woodside Green - Approved!

Twitter tech, tips and transgressions from Stephanie Darkes. . .

W

elcome to the not-so-nerdy world of Stephanie Darkes, your no nonsense music & Social Media go-to-girl. How have you enjoyed the April showers? I don’t get it, we have a drought and it’s raining a lot - surely we can resolve one problem with the other? Anyway, this month I’m going to be looking at Trending topics on Twitter, The cult of the Belieber, Twitter and TV and the joy of Fiverr.com. Let’s start with the Hashtag. One of the first things I get asked when I’m teaching a new client Twitter is what is it for? According to Twitter Hashtags or # are “included specifically in Tweets to mark them as relating to a topic so that people can follow the

London trends. I got several responses, most of which were along the lines of 'people with no taste’ but one particular response surprised me. I’m not going to grass her up - but she’s a very talented and credible rock journo friend who admitted to being a Belieber! When I asked her whether the rock acts she interviewed knew this, she simply replied “they wouldn't understand". No, they wouldn't! They really wouldn’t! On 28th April I saw this tweet: @BiebsHeaven: #21 Million Beliebers. So Justin Beiber has 21 Million followers. According to Wikipedia there are over 140 million Twitter users around the world, which means that Justin Beiber has around 15% of the world on Twitter following him! I

I often wonder, when all these people are tweeting each nano-second of a programme, is there noone with them thinking ‘this relationship is over...’ conversation in search” in other words, if you want to see who’s talking about Madonna, you would put #Madonna into the search option and all tweets that include her will appear. Hashtags generate Trending Topics and you can set your view of Trending Topics by location (country or city). Trending Topics are determined by an algorithm that identifies the topics that are popular at that moment in time. For example, during the riots last year the London trends were dominated by riot based topics. #Croydon was trending for a long time. The cult of the Belieber In April I’ve seen the world #Belieber trending in various tweets almost continuously. Knowing in the back of my mind that it had to be something to do with all-American teen Justin Beiber (I was supplied with a picture of the Bieber to put here, but I refuse - Ed) I decided to ask my followers ‘what is a Belieber?’ not quite believing that the cult of the Beiber could be so ingrained in

might add that Lady Gaga actually beat him to the 21 million mark back in March (there is a reason why she’s Top of the Twops) but with the Cult of the Beliebers in full swing, I’m not fancying her chances of holding on to her title. Twitter & TV When the new series of Titanic aired (yawn) Twitter was bubbling over with commentary on it (double yawn). Similarly, every time The Voice is on it trends with a constant dialogue of what's happening - it’s the subtitled version, you don't even need to watch it. I often wonder when all these people are sitting at home tweeting each nano-section of a programme, is there no one at home with them thinking ‘my relationship is over’. Don't get me wrong, I am obviously a great advocate of Twitter BUT 14

there is nothing more annoying that spending the evening with someone who is constantly on their phone (just ask my husband). Fiverr One of my favourite discoveries of April was www.Fiverr.com, it’s a legendary site when you can buy all manner of exciting things ranging from cartoon drawings of yourself to people singing you happy birthday in the bath (there are a lot of things people will do for $5 or around £3.30–ish for us). I tried a few folk out in April and I got myself a promo video for my business, a cartoon me and an advocate in Alaska (see insert). Have a play, it’s very addictive! Until next time! Where’s Iron Sky?! Well sorry folks, due to issues with the release date and distributors, you’ll have to wait. But don’t worry! We will be reviewing it as soon as possible The Raven Edgar Allen Poe helps solve murder mysteries? Really? A sort of Murder She Wrote meets Seven meets Sleepy Hollow? This trashy and delightfully silly premise may be the film’s saving grace. For it is only in being consumed as a bizarre bit of light fluff that this film just about scrapes in as watchable. In the last days of Edgar Allen Poe, a series of gruesome murders are being committed in the style of the writers own fiction. Due to his expert knowledge and personal interests, the police enlist the assistance of Poe in the pursuit of the killer. The character of Poe, played by John Cusack, is whiney and wrongly cast, as are most of the characters. In terms of the murder mystery, there isn’t one: just a string of deaths thinly linked to a frustratingly pointless ‘ScoobyDoo’ revelation. So why watch this film? Well as stated it is delightfully trashy, and sometimes that’s nice. Also it has some gorgeously grim set pieces which, combined with the films simplicity, make it easy to just sit back, relax and take it in. Maybe not worth seeing in the cinema, but definitely worth a watch on TV on a Sunday afternoon.

The Devil Inside I have to admit that I enjoyed parts of this film. Exorcism films are very difficult to get right, as are found footage ones. The Devil Inside invests massively into some great scenes, but then lets itself down by neglecting so many other elements. A woman goes in search of her mother, who has been institutionalised since a murder spree during a failed exorcism. Along with a camera crew and some renegade priests, they attempt to finally rid her mother of the demons that posses her. First off, I hated almost all the characters in this movie, every last one is a static stereotype which made the already pathetic dialogue extremely predictable. Together, these elements shattered the illusion of reality. Luckily the found footage aspect did come to life in the actual exorcism/ possession sequences which were intensely creepy in their portrayal of blind struggle in the face of superior forces. Though these scenes ran the gauntlet of exorcism/ possession clichés, there was a fair effort to tie them down to a world of science and consequence. If only this film had pursued this line of thought instead of unnecessary melodrama, it could have had the feel of a genuine documentary.

John Carter This film has been labelled as one of the biggest cinematic flops of all time, so obviously we had to see it! In a nutshell, a US civil war veteran is transported to Mars during a time of war where he must rescue a princess from an arranged marriage whilst also revealing a plot by a sinister group of monks…. Huh?! Based on the classic sci-fi novel A Princess Of Mars, Disney’s advertising campaign tried to appeal both to hardcore fans and mainstream audiences, ultimately isolating both. However most disappointing was John Carter himself - a dull one-dimensional macho void. The other major fault was how curiously bad the special effects were. Films of this nature are sold on their CGI, yet there were times when it was blurry and grainy. At the risk of saying something positive though, this film had a great classical Hollywood feel to it which fans of Flash Gordon and other sci-fi/fantasy relics should enjoy, and the subplot of mysterious war-mongering monks (lead by Mark Strong) lends itself to a potentially good sequel. Ultimately, however, the film was way too long for what it was and dragged, making all its negative faults painfully obvious to see.

The Cabin in the Woods Ever notice how so many horror films are similar? Same group of teenagers (usually a jock, nerd, stoner, virgin etc.) go to a cabin in the woods and get killed off by someone/ something? Well what if instead of being a safe film formula, there was some mysterious, overarching, methodological source ultimately responsible? This is question that The Cabin in the Woods asks. We are introduced to our usual group of teenagers staying in the usual spooky cabin. As they begin to fall victim though, our protagonists start to notice glitches in this seemingly straightforward horror scenario. The Cabin in the Woods challenges a whole host of horror standards, turning them completely on their head and offering a new, fresh and funny take on the genre. This is a film packed with sharp dialogue and humour, both light-hearted and dark . Without revealing too much, there are two stories here - that of the teenagers, but also that of the mundane lives of those running the killings. The film’s strength lies in being able to show these two conflicting perspectives simultaneously and displaying how differently their experiences are interpreted, and by doing this criticise the virtues of big business and challenge social apathy.

What’s On - Regular Every Day / Monthly Events: Every Day: • Theatre: Call Me Mr Robeson 4th May until 20th May. A roller coaster journey through Robeson's remarkable and eventful life, the play highlights how his radical activism caused him to be disowned and disremembered, even by the leaders and descendants of the civil rights movement. It features some of his famous songs and speeches, including a dramatic rendition of Ol' Man River. "FIRST RATE" Michael Billington The Guardian "A TRIUMPH" BroadwayWorld.com "INSPIRING" British Theatre Guide, October 2011 Various dates and times: For more info please visit www.warehousetheatre.co.uk or call the box office on 020 8680 4060 The Warehouse Theatre, Dingwall Road, Croydon CR0 2NF. • Theatre: Oliver Reed 25th May until 3rd June. In this blistering show, join legendary hellraiser Oliver Reed as he knocks back a few drinks and shares his incredible life story. From the boyhood excitement of learning he was a descendant of Peter the Great, through the success of Oliver!, boozy adventures with Keith Moon and disastrous chat show appearances this was a life well lived. But though Ollie may appear an unstoppable force of nature, this is Malta in 1999, and time is fast running out for the 'Wild Thing'. Rob Crouch brings Reed back to vivid life in this swaggering, brilliant evening of entertainment. Various dates and times: For more info please visit www.warehousetheatre.co.uk or call the box office on 020 8680 4060 The Warehouse Theatre, Dingwall Road, Croydon CR0 2NF. • Museum: Dickens & London 9 Dec 2011 - 10 June 2012. Celebrate the 200th anniversary of the birth of Charles Dickens in the first major UK exhibition for over 40 years. Recreating the atmosphere of Victorian London through sound and projections, you'll be taken on a haunting journey to discover the city that inspired his writings. Paintings, photographs, costume and objects will illustrate themes that Dickens wove into his works, while rarely seen manuscripts including Bleak House and David Copperfield – written in the author’s own hand – will offer clues to his creative genius. During your visit you'll discover how Dickens' childhood experiences of London, working in a blacking factory whilehis father was locked away in a debtor's prison, were introduced into the

stories he wrote. The great social questions of the 19th century, including wealth and poverty, prostitution, childhood mortality and philanthropy, will also be examined, all of which set the scene for Dickens' greatest works. Highlights of the exhibition will include an innovative audio-visual experience bringing to life the desk and chair where Dickens worked on his novels, and a specially commissioned film by one of the UK’s leading documentary filmmakers, William Raban, which will explore the similarities between London after dark today and the night time city described by Dickens over 150 years ago. Tue 15 • Theatre: LILIES ON THE LAND 5 May – Saturday 19 May 7.45pm, Thu & Sat Mat 2.30pm. A truly remarkable and sparkling piece of theatre which celebrates an extraordinary episode in Britain’s history – the Women’s Land Army of World War II. This delightful and often deeply touching play charts the personal journeys of four women who sign up to become Land Girls, determined to work endless, backbreaking hours on farms across the country in a bid to do their best for the War Effort. But how will these women, hailing from all different walks of life, torn from their families and bereft of all basic home comforts, deal not only with the hardships of farming life and the pressures of war, but also with being outsiders in new surroundings? Maybe work clothes full of mice and toilet rolls falling from the skies are just what it takes for these girls to get through…Based on hundreds of letters from and interviews with the original Land Girls along with songs from the period, Lilies on the Land is a revealing, funny, wonderfully moving and utterly captivating portrait of some of Britain’s pluckiest, unsung heroes. Suitable for ages 9+. Tickets: £18, concessions £15. (£2.25 booking fee per ticket). For more info please visit www.fairfield.co.uk or call the box office on 020 8688 9291. The original members have all long ceased to appear with the band, but the current incumbents who can boast over 200 years of service between them have carried on the inimitable sound, the hilarious deadpan tomfoolery, and the sartorial elegance of The Temperance Seven. Audiences regularly comment on the fact that they sound and look just the same as when they first heard the band in the 60s! The main difference now is that the band has a vast repertoire ( unlike the original members who only knew about five arrangements back in 1961) with new items constantly being added…. jazz classics from the past, original compositions, novelty numbers ….so whatever your taste in jazz The Temperance Seven will play it for you. Directed by Tony Milner. Designed by Kenneth Mellor. Based on the true story of a woman who was both victim and persecutor during World War II. Stella Goldschlag was a Jew living illegally in war-torn Berlin when she was betrayed and tortured. When offered the chance of saving herself and her parents from deportation to Aushwitz, she agreed to be a ‘Greifer’ for the Gestapo and betray Jews in hiding. She was extraordinarily successful in this and her activities increased after her parents had finally been deported. She was accused of finding and capturing more than three thousand Jews. The dimensions of Stella’s character are vast and range from tortured victim to cruel killer, from loving daughter to betrayer of friends, from gentle lover to depraved promiscuity. She was given the name ‘Blonde Poison’ by the Gestapo who revelled in her treachery. Gail Louw’s powerful new play deals with Stella’s last chance for redemption. Decades after the War she agrees to be interviewed by a well respected journalist – but again finds herself caught in a web of danger. Can Stella Goldschlag ever be released from her past?
