deep online at: www.deep-london.co.uk • www.issuu.com • www.facebook.com/deeplondon • twitter @deep_london Hello there.. ...and welcome to issue 100! Before we start, a quick apology to Andy at The Dog and Esther at The Dragon for an error I made in last month’s issue. As mentioned before, you’d have thought, after doing this 100 times, I’d have got the hang of it by now... Anyhoo - so yes, we’re 100 issues old this month, and also 9 years old. As you may have suspected, we didn’t actually get a telegram from the Queen, but we thought it was quite apt, given the jubilee and all that, and it made me laugh, so there. As is entirely usual for us, our plans for this issue were scuppered early on, but we think that what we have got does actually represent what we do here, and have been doing for nine years, quite well in that we’ve got some uplifting community stuff, a bit of charity, a whole raft of contributors from amongst you, our lovely readers, and some morris dancing. All of which is underpinned by our marvellous advertisers, without whom we wouldn’t be here at all, so thanks to you. And also thanks to all you readers, contributors, helpers, supporters and anyone at all who’s ever picked up the mag and found something interesting, or even just something interesting to do of a night. We are humbled by your ongoing support. As is customary, we’ve had a progress check on the child development website to see how we’re doing and apparently we’re in a period of major transition as we stand on the cusp of adolescence. “In many ways, 9-yearolds are still young children; but they are becoming much more independent, and are developmentally mature enough to handle many responsibilities and situations with minimal adult intervention”. This is true, I’ve even been using the big scissors on my own. Elsewhere, we’re apparently increasingly expanding our social circles to include more people, and, somewhat crucially for us it says “Children this age also tend to want a certain amount of organisation, and may want to keep track of their activities and schedules.” That would be novel... We are also, as we always have been, as it goes, incredibly curious about the world and may want to research topics that interest us. We have longer attention spans and will tend to spend lots of time on activities and subjects that we are excited about. We will be able to think critically, and may want to share our opinions about things. We will read and write increasingly complicated texts. Ooh, that’s something to look forward to then, increasingly complicated texts, as opposed to the usual rubbish we churn out - see, it was worth sticking with us for nine years. Elsewhere, plans are still afoot for our party, which I promised to reveal to you this month but which has suffered something of a hiccup so it’ll be in July, which coincides with my actual birthday, so that’ll be nice, and I absolutely promise to give you the details in the next issue. Honest. Right, that’s it from me for another month, we hope you all enjoy the jubilee celebrations, and the football, and the weather, and whatever else you happen to be up to in June, and we’ll see you all next month, when we’ll be 101, which doesn’t have quite the same ring to it, but is impressive anyway, don’t you think? Avanti, Allons-y, Cheers! Angela xxx Your Bonsai Editor - 100 issues, still no ferrari... 1

ome years back I was enjoying a quiet pint in The Ship when I was approached by a man who asked what the Sea Shepherd logo on my shirt meant. I explained that we are a non-profit direct action organisation whose aim is to stop the destruction of our oceans and the life within them, physically shutting down illegal Japanese whaling operations in the Southern Ocean, catching illegal shark finners and bluefin tuna poachers and disrupting and documenting the Canadian Seal slaughter. He shrugged “not many whales in Croydon” and wandered
are). However Japan exploits a loophole in the moratorium that allows them to have an annual kill quota of 935 Minke whales and 50 endangered fin whales for “scientific research” purposes. Of course there is no research. Whales are killed with explosive tipped harpoons in a designated whale sanctuary and transferred to a floating abattoir, the Nissin Maru, where they are dismembered, packed and put on ice ready for sale to the Japanese public. SSCS has sent the fleet home early for the last two years with only a fraction of their kill quota by using non violent
“We rely on donations so from high profile supporters to pennies dropped in a bucket at an event, it all counts” off. He didn’t get it. Thankfully today, most people do. Animal Planet has brought “Whale Wars” into our living rooms and the media coverage over the last few years has ensured that most people now know who Sea Shepherds are and what we do. The Sea Shepherd Conservation Society (SSCS) was formed in 1977 by Paul Watson, a founding member of Greenpeace after he was voted out for being too “radical”. In the 35 years since, SSCS has grown into a worldwide movement with many thousands of active volunteers in every part of the globe. We have shut down the Canadian Seal slaughter, and have chased the Japanese whaling fleet out of the Southern Ocean, costing them millions in lost profits, effectively bankrupting them. Commercial whaling was banned in 1986 as some species were on the verge of extinction (some still

Namibia to document the brutal slaughter of 85,000 Cape Fur seal pups. Most pups are still nursing when they are clubbed to death for the fur industry. We sent two ships to the Faroe Islands to disrupt the “Grindadrap”, a savage spectacle where hundreds of Pilot whales are driven onto the beaches where they are stabbed and slashed to death, all in the name of tradition. No whales were killed while SSCS were present. This summer we will go to the South Pacific to investigate shark finning. One hundred million sharks are killed each year, mostly for their fins. The sharks are landed, their fins hacked off and the body thrown back to die an agonizing death. The fins are then used to make a tasteless soup, a status symbol at up to one hundred dollars a bowl in Far East countries. With sharks taking approximately seven years to reach sexual maturity you don’t have to be a genius to realise that we simply cannot continue to slaughter the apex predator of the seas in such numbers. say, disrupting illegal operations worth hundreds of millions of dollars is bound to make you enemies, and the people that run these industries are not nice people. Paul Watson was arrested on May 13th on arrival at Frankfurt airport on a German warrant issued by Costa Rica. The warrant related to an "alleged violation of ships traffic" which took place in Guatemalan waters in 2002, when an SSCS crew encountered an illegal shark finning operation. On order of the Guatemalan authorities, they instructed the crew of the Costa Rican vessel in question, the Varadero, to head back to port to be prosecuted. While escorting the Varadero back to port, a Guatemalan gunboat was dispatched to intercept the Sea Shepherd crew. The crew of the Varadero accused SSCS of trying to kill them, while

“If the oceans die, we die” Paul Watson the video evidence, which has been in the public domain for years via the movie “Sharkwater” proves this to be a fallacy. To avoid the Guatemalan gunboat, the Sea Shepherd crew then set sail for Costa Rica, where they uncovered even more illegal shark finning activities in the form of thousands of shark fins drying on the roofs of industrial buildings. Paul Watson spent eight days in a German prison and is now on bail under house arrest awaiting the outcome of an extradition request from Costa Rica. We currently have three ships, ‘Steve Irwin’, ‘Bob Barker’ and our fast interceptor vessel the ‘Brigitte Bardot’. We have helicopters and unmanned drones, satellite communications systems to ensure we can upload film of illegal activities to the media as it happens, and most importantly a crew of passionate and brave volunteers who literally put their lives on the line to ensure that our marine 6

A worldwide army of on-shore volunteers give up their time to raise money, running outreach stands at events and concerts, getting sponsorship for sporting events, attending protests and educating the public about SSCS and the state of our oceans.

On the weekend of June 30th / July 1st the Ship in Croydon will be hosting a SSCS fundraising event. “Aquaoostic” is a two day event featuring local and not so local acoustic talent (see listings for who’s playing), with late night sounds from DJ Swedish. There will be raffles and SSCS merchandise available and free SSCS t-shirts to anyone signing up to be part of the “direct action crew”. Come along and help us to help the oceans. “If the Oceans die, we die” – Paul Watson Maurice Brennock and Kristin Nilsson are senior volunteers at Sea Shepherd UK. www.seashepherd.org / Maurice.brennock@virg inmedia.com

or the past two months the Croydon Clocktower, a familiar haunt for local residents, has become the home of an innovative team of Iranian theatre makers. Taking up residence in the historic Braithwaite Hall Hamid Pourazari and his team of performers have been creating ‘Unfinished Dream’; an immersive, site specific performance commissioned and presented by London International Festival of Theatre (LIFT) in partnership with Croydon Council. Over 200 Croydon residents have
completely original piece of work. ‘Unfinished Dream’ promises to tell the hidden and moving stories of the residents of Croydon, including those who have arrived as refugees and found themselves in limbo. ‘Unfinished Dream’ has been created with its unique setting in mind: the top two floors of the Q-Park multi-storey car park in Surrey Street. The audience will find themselves transported to a dreamscape where they will meet different performers and witness their stories unfolding. In such a vast space and with such a
“What I witnessed was a moving reminder of the power of theatre to give voice to people on the margins of society” passed through the doors of Braithwaite Hall since April, each contributing to the rich tapestry that will be ‘Unfinished Dream’. The final cast comprises over 70 Croydon residents and refugees from a diverse range of backgrounds, all have different stories to tell and experiences to share. Participants originate from many countries, including Portugal, Albania, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Iraq, Jamaica and the Seychelles, and numerous languages including Farsi, Arabic, French, German, and Urdu. Some derive their language from many places, creating their own individual Patois. As a devised piece of theatre Hamid works with and responds to the ideas of the performers. These have been coaxed out through 2 months of workshops, writing exercises and improvisations. Working in this way to make a show allows each performer to have a voice in this
large cast no two audience members will experience the same thing. The ambition and scale of this performance is not unfamiliar to Hamid. His recent work includes an adaptation of Brecht’s ‘Caucasian Chalk Circle’ presented by a cast of 85 in an abandoned

abattoir in South Tehran. A performance without limits, the cast worked together for a year not only to devise the performance but to build and decorate the set. It was at this performance that Mark Ball, artistic director of LIFT first met Hamid. Seeing Hamid working with a large cast of all ages, many who have never performed before, inspired Mark in a way no other work he saw on that trip did: "What I witnessed was a brilliant, exciting and compelling performance that was a moving reminder of the power of theatre to give voice to people on the margins of society.". On the back of this LIFT invited Hamid to come to London to work with refugees in this global city.‘Unfinished Dream’ will run from June 21st – July 1st. Tickets can be bought at Fairfield Halls, where the performance will begin. Participants will then be taken on a journey to a car park across town.

ello and welcome back to all my lovely friends. First I must say how proud I am to be congratulating Deep on Issue No. 100! Marvellous stuff - do we get a telegram from Her Maj or is she too busy celebrating her own measly 60th? And secondly, I must apologise for my unexplained absence last month. Yes, I know how worried you all were - my inbox was bursting with messages wondering if I'd been washed away in a flood, tripped over Edith's old phonebook collection (old age gets you like that, just you wait) or (heaven forfend) your Bonsai Editor had simply bitten the bullet and sacked me. No, it was nothing as mundane as all that. It
goat he couldn't negotiate round, and re-tracing his tracks. Three hours later and hot, thirsty and starving we arrived at our apartment and Edith vowed to try to commandeer the "Wedding carriage pony" who traipses up and down the main strip giving rides to silly tourists for the return journey to the airport. However, after a wobbly start the rest of the holiday was marvellous. We hit the beach every day, parking our lilos between the ubiquitous sunbeds which now line every beach, cove and rocky outcrop, thereby avoiding the 8 Euro charge and annoying the sunbed man into the bargain. We lunched under palmtree umbrellas on local cheese, lumps of bread and salad while Edith
“On the last night, Edith rather over-shotted herself and decided to demonstrate her infamous ability to do the splits over a naked flame. . . was simply that absolutely nothing whatsoever happened last month that merited putting quill to parchment and anyway, as troubled politicians are fond of saying, I was on holiday at the time. Which in my case is true. And what a holiday it was. We decided to go at the last minute to escape the dreadful rain. Now I love everything about flying apart from the tedious safety demonstration before you take off so I was entranced by Thomson Holidays' use of some endearing children on the video to tell us how to escape when and if we crash. Consequently Edith became quite set on adopting an orphan - until she had to endure three hours with several of them screaming and wailing behind her. Thankfully the children's wisdom wasn't needed as the pilot dropped us onto the tarmac safely and we transferred to a rather rickety looking coach. The journey from the airport should have taken about an hour but we soon discovered that our driver Stefanos preferred to do the journey in reverse gear. His plan appeared to be to head for the furthest hotel first and then randomly pick off the others on his list by reversing around the town, occasionally reaching a tight bend or a
scored the waiters according to speed, efficiency and good hair. Then, after a bit of a swim and another toasting session on the beach, we headed home to sit on the balcony with a beer or three and watch the sun set over the mountains, while dropping cheese down to the local cats. A quick shower and a generous spray of insecticide, and we were off through the spectacular firefly display to savour the wonderful local cuisine. Then it was a short stroll down the road to the bar where we were plied with free shots (three in half an hour, no less - local pubs take note of how to keep your customers!) and a bit of live music and Greek dancing. Our favourite was Splinter Band - a dubious looking combo illustrating the perils of facial over-tanning and sporting some weird medically enhanced hairline technology. On the last night Edith rather overshotted herself and foolishly decided to join in the Greek fire dancing, whereupon she demonstrated her infamous ability to do the splits over the flames. Fortunately she was wearing her flame-proof Tena-Ladies (invaluable for hot flushes and other heated encounters). She was then induced to stand on the table and quote her 10
favourite limerick which goes something like, "There was an old vampire called Mabel, Whose monthlies were rather unstable. On every full moon she got out a spoon, And drank herself under the table". And so we returned to 11° of wind chill, although now thankfully I'm writing this in a bit of an early heatwave. This month I'm very excited about the forthcoming Sea Shepherd Aquaoostic fundraiser over the weekend of 30th June at the Ship. I love watching Whale Wars and am always humbled by their willingness to put their own lives at risk to stop the illegal slaughter of such beautiful creatures. Come along and let's help them in their task by doing what we do best - partying hard all weekend and raising a shedload of money on their behalf. In the meantime, drink up, dress down and have a wonderful summer. Auntie May returns next month Edith in full flow. Possibly.

he RSC are promoting a huge amount of events over the coming weeks, as part of the World Shakespeare festival, Companies from all over the globe are bringing London alive, filling the audiences with wonder with varying takes on Shakespeare. As someone who was never given the opportunity to study Shakespeare, every time the opportunity arises to view a production, I jump at it. Always overflowing with intrigue, intent, sex and soul, every production is new, full of learning. If you have never been now is the time! with tickets for 16-25’s running at £5.00 for a night out, “a bit of culture” is to be had. Man you will not be disappointed!! The female cast was very strong in this production and arguably carried the weaker male cast, with glimpses of real passion from Marcio Vito and Carol Machado who for me was the heart of the production, she captivated the audience. The intermittent comedy from Thierry Tremouroux was withering but I’m not sure it quite befitted the production and was slightly distracting.Punctuated with music, and with a wonderful visual use of suspended ropes where artists launched themselves into space, ladders that spun over the stage, towers that rose from the stage, which itself was angled down into the audience, allowing the audience to feel more part of the production. A nice touch at the start was the performers coming onto the stage undressing then redressing in their acting garb which in one swoop removed layers of dross, enabling a more honest approach to the work, very Brechtian, loved it!! 12

Steph Darkes takes a break from Twitter to bring us news of this year’s Purley Festival
A
Festival for the people by the people – Purley Festival (25th June – 1st July )
I’ve replaced my tech column with some shameless promotion for the festival that I have been working hard on over the last few months I know we’ve lost our precious Croydon Festival but don’t despair. A group of people in Purley have been working very hard and this year you're in for a real treat. Purley festival is a FREE festival with heaps of activities during the week throughout Purley including historical tours, live music and dance workshops (25-29 June). It ends with a FREE extravaganza in the rotary field, Brighton Road on Saturday 30th June & Sunday 1st July where there will be live music, dance, food, fun for the children and lots of great stalls ran by local businesses. The festival is run by a dedicated team of local volunteers; all of the money for the festival has been raised by sponsorship and love from the local community. Purley Festival really is a festival for the people by the people! Music at Purley Festival The main stage: new to the bill, Popchoir will be opening the main stage singing great songs from the many artists that have formed the soundtrack to our lives. The “bizarre mixture of traditional Eastern European music and modern Western hedonism" that is Olski Shutov & the Gypsies is guaranteed to get you in the mood for a party. The Fuegos will be playing you some classic rock four piece with a modern twist. Our very Special guest from Sweden is The Glass Child, Charlotte Eriksson, the girl who left everything she knew to prove to the world what she can do and live her life on her own terms, she writes and performs all of her own music and set up her own record label at 19! If you haven’t heard of Oliver Sudden, you’re not from The Cronx! It’s been said that Oliver Sudden created the Hip Hop scene in Croydon. The Skanx are a 9- Piece Ska-Funk Band. The band is known up and down the country for their original material fusing Ska, Reggae, Dub and Funk. We also have one of the Croydon greats, the melting pot of sounds that is Banned Sauce,
influenced from Delta Blues and New Orleans Funk to heavy rock. Forty-seven music students from The BRIT School will be headlining the main stage on Saturday, performing an hour of popular hits which appeal to all ages and our lovely mate Mat Martin (of Cartoon fame) is helping us massively by supplying the stage, the sound, the backline and the engineers… love you Mat! On Sunday we welcome to Purley festival for the second year Bearing the Blues, a Jazz Sextet formed of young local musicians. For the first time, S.I.N.G Purley a local choir will be singing a cappella covers of great classic tunes (hopefully complete with beat boxer). We are very pleased to showcase the winner of Purley’s Got Talent & the African drumming group from Selsdon Primary school who are the winners of the Croydon Music Festival. The fabulous Folk/country/Americana band Tumbleweed - who I am very much looking forward to seeing live – will be performing and the fantastic ten piece funk, soul and disco band, Payback will be playing club classics and guilty pleasures from the funk and soul of the 1960s right up to the pop classics of the 1990s and Noughties to finish the festival with a bang! But there’s more! We’ve got an acoustic tent for you too! On Saturday our acoustic tent has been programmed by Jon Roffey from Scream Lounge and the lineup includes Lorna Wall Jazz Trio, Jenny Lockyer, Polaris Condition, Soapy Jefferson, Inkhouse / Sabiyha Rasheed, JJ Beard & the Wierds, The Frisbys, The Caffreys (Rob Cushman & Ian Harris), Wake, Lady Man Lady, The Centrales & Mark Woods, Fear No Fish, Lovelist and Homebrood On Sunday in the acoustic tent you’ll find Brothers of Mother Shovel, Insight, Wonk Unit (Acoustic Set), Shan 14

Where’s Iron Sky?! Well sorry folks, due to issues with the release date and distributors, you’ll have to wait. But don’t worry! We will be reviewing it as soon as possible The Raven Edgar Allen Poe helps solve murder mysteries? Really? A sort of Murder She Wrote meets Seven meets Sleepy Hollow? This trashy and delightfully silly premise may be the film’s saving grace. For it is only in being consumed as a bizarre bit of light fluff that this film just about scrapes in as watchable. In the last days of Edgar Allen Poe, a series of gruesome murders are being committed in the style of the writers own fiction. Due to his expert knowledge and personal interests, the police enlist the assistance of Poe in the pursuit of the killer. The character of Poe, played by John Cusack, is whiney and wrongly cast, as are most of the characters. In terms of the murder mystery, there isn’t one: just a string of deaths thinly linked to a frustratingly pointless ‘ScoobyDoo’ revelation. So why watch this film? Well as stated it is delightfully trashy, and sometimes that’s nice. Also it has some gorgeously grim set pieces which, combined with the films simplicity, make it easy to just sit back, relax and take it in. Maybe not worth seeing in the cinema, but definitely worth a watch on TV on a Sunday afternoon.
The Devil Inside I have to admit that I enjoyed parts of this film. Exorcism films are very difficult to get right, as are found footage ones. The Devil Inside invests massively into some great scenes, but then lets itself down by neglecting so many other elements. A woman goes in search of her mother, who has been institutionalised since a murder spree during a failed exorcism. Along with a camera crew and some renegade priests, they attempt to finally rid her mother of the demons that posses her. First off, I hated almost all the characters in this movie, every last one is a static stereotype which made the already pathetic dialogue extremely predictable. Together, these elements shattered the illusion of reality. Luckily the found footage aspect did come to life in the actual exorcism/ possession sequences which were intensely creepy in their portrayal of blind struggle in the face of superior forces. Though these scenes ran the gauntlet of exorcism/ possession clichés, there was a fair effort to tie them down to a world of science and consequence. If only this film had pursued this line of thought instead of unnecessary melodrama, it could have had the feel of a genuine documentary.
John Carter This film has been labelled as one of the biggest cinematic flops of all time, so obviously we had to see it! In a nutshell, a US civil war veteran is transported to Mars during a time of war where he must rescue a princess from an arranged marriage whilst also revealing a plot by a sinister group of monks…. Huh?! Based on the classic sci-fi novel A Princess Of Mars, Disney’s advertising campaign tried to appeal both to hardcore fans and mainstream audiences, ultimately isolating both. However most disappointing was John Carter himself - a dull one-dimensional macho void. The other major fault was how curiously bad the special effects were. Films of this nature are sold on their CGI, yet there were times when it was blurry and grainy. At the risk of saying something positive though, this film had a great classical Hollywood feel to it which fans of Flash Gordon and other sci-fi/fantasy relics should enjoy, and the subplot of mysterious war-mongering monks (lead by Mark Strong) lends itself to a potentially good sequel. Ultimately, however, the film was way too long for what it was and dragged, making all its negative faults painfully obvious to see.
The Cabin in the Woods Ever notice how so many horror films are similar? Same group of teenagers (usually a jock, nerd, stoner, virgin etc.) go to a cabin in the woods and get killed off by someone/ something? Well what if instead of being a safe film formula, there was some mysterious, overarching, methodological source ultimately responsible? This is question that The Cabin in the Woods asks. We are introduced to our usual group of teenagers staying in the usual spooky cabin. As they begin to fall victim though, our protagonists start to notice glitches in this seemingly straightforward horror scenario. The Cabin in the Woods challenges a whole host of horror standards, turning them completely on their head and offering a new, fresh and funny take on the genre. This is a film packed with sharp dialogue and humour, both light-hearted and dark . Without revealing too much, there are two stories here - that of the teenagers, but also that of the mundane lives of those running the killings. The film’s strength lies in being able to show these two conflicting perspectives simultaneously and displaying how differently their experiences are interpreted, and by doing this criticise the virtues of big business and challenge social apathy.

What’s On - Regular Every Day / Monthly Events: Every Day: • Theatre: Call Me Mr Robeson 4th May until 20th May. A roller coaster journey through Robeson's remarkable and eventful life, the play highlights how his radical activism caused him to be disowned and disremembered, even by the leaders and descendants of the civil rights movement. It features some of his famous songs and speeches, including a dramatic rendition of Ol' Man River. "FIRST RATE" Michael Billington The Guardian "A TRIUMPH" BroadwayWorld.com "INSPIRING" British Theatre Guide, October 2011 Various dates and times: For more info please visit www.warehousetheatre.co.uk or call the box office on 020 8680 4060 The Warehouse Theatre, Dingwall Road, Croydon CR0 2NF. • Theatre: Oliver Reed 25th May until 3rd June. In this blistering show, join legendary hellraiser Oliver Reed as he knocks back a few drinks and shares his incredible life story. From the boyhood excitement of learning he was a descendant of Peter the Great, through the success of Oliver!, boozy adventures with Keith Moon and disastrous chat show appearances this was a life well lived. But though Ollie may appear an unstoppable force of nature, this is Malta in 1999, and time is fast running out for the 'Wild Thing'. Rob Crouch brings Reed back to vivid life in this swaggering, brilliant evening of entertainment. Various dates and times: For more info please visit www.warehousetheatre.co.uk or call the box office on 020 8680 4060 The Warehouse Theatre, Dingwall Road, Croydon CR0 2NF. • Museum: Dickens & London 9 Dec 2011 - 10 June 2012. Celebrate the 200th anniversary of the birth of Charles Dickens in the first major UK exhibition for over 40 years. Recreating the atmosphere of Victorian London through sound and projections, you'll be taken on a haunting journey to discover the city that inspired his writings. Paintings, photographs, costume and objects will illustrate themes that Dickens wove into his works, while rarely seen manuscripts including Bleak House and David Copperfield – written in the author’s own hand – will offer clues to his creative genius. During your visit you'll discover how Dickens' childhood experiences of London, working in a blacking factory whilehis father was locked away in a debtor's prison, were introduced into the
stories he wrote. The great social questions of the 19th century, including wealth and poverty, prostitution, childhood mortality and philanthropy, will also be examined, all of which set the scene for Dickens' greatest works. Highlights of the exhibition will include an innovative audio-visual experience bringing to life the desk and chair where Dickens worked on his novels, and a specially commissioned film by one of the UK’s leading documentary filmmakers, William Raban, which will explore the similarities between London after dark today and the night time city described by Dickens over 150 years ago. And to really set the scene we have some assistance... We are excited to welcome Chris Jarman, aka Raiden, who flies in from Tallinn, Estonia, especially for the occasion, and Stuart Perkins aka Cause4Concern, both EDM and drum luminaries of some distinction; for those who have yet to make their acquaintance, perhaps the event will serve as the perfect induction. 9pm - 4am. Dave Wood sends us this report and pictures of Morris dancing at the Royal Standard on Saturday 12th may. I bought myself a pint of Pride and went to sit outside in the evening sunshine, I was soon to be joined by dozens more. We had come to the Royal Standard to watch the finale of North Wood Day of Dance. Six sides of folk dancers including morris and clog dancers had spent the day travelling on two coaches to dance for the public at six pubs from The Oxted Inn in Oxted to The Carpenters Arms in Limpsfield Chart, The Kentish Horse and The Leicester Arms both in Edenbridge, The Diamond in Hurst Green ending at The Royal Standard in Croydon. As the evening passed the different troops took their turn dancing in the road in front of the pub, stopping the traffic in Sheldon Street for brief periods during each dance. We saw dancing with bells on ankles and hankies in hands, dances with sticks clashing, clog dancers holding shorter sticks with bells attached. Costumes varied too; jackets with coloured ribbon hung from them, white shirts and green baldricks, black skirts pinned up to show blue and white underskirts and blue waistcoats. All had many badges sewn on jackets and hats. As the sun began to set it came to the last dance where all the sides danced together along with some brave merry volunteers from the crowd. If you would like to see and maybe join in, North Wood Morris will be dancing at the Royal Standard again on thursday 26th july and have a full programme throughout the year. Check them out at www.northwoodmorris.com .
