deep online at: www.deep-london.co.uk • www.issuu.com • www.facebook.com/deeplondon • twitter @deep_london Hello there.. ...and welcome to issue 103. It seems to have been a little while since we saw you, you’re looking well, have you lost weight etc etc. I won’t bore you with the details but suffice to say sometimes very old apple macs pop their little clogs and go to heaven, and new ones, as anyone who uses one will know, are not exactly cheap, and nor os the software required to produce nthis sort of quality rubbish. Still, all sorted now, and there’s a tiny digital gravestone in the deep towers garden, next to that of Boris the hamster... Anyway, this is going to be a somewhat abridged editorial mainly because I have nothing to report. It’s cold out, it’s wet, the dreaded C-word is hurtling towards us. Meh... Actually, I like Christmas - for one thing, after the disappointment of not receiving that Ferrari for my birthday, I may still find it bonnet up in my Xmas stocking. Plus it’s the season for copious amounts of drinking, vol-au-vents and some seriously crap telly. What’s not to like? Oh, and also our December / January double issue, which, being the highly organised person you all know I am, I’ve already started on through the medium of the defaulted Olympics pub-crawl drinking game being cleverly morphed into the Winter Olympics pub-crawl drinking game, coming to you to brighten up your January. Job done! Plus there’s always the remote possibility that there may be a Deep Xmas Party. Stranger things have happened... Anyway, there’s still a month to go until all that festive stuff, and there’s plenty going on in the meantime, and most of it this month seems to be jazz related. Nice. We have an interview with Brighton’s finest exponent of Gypsy Jazz, coming to Croydon at the end of November, as well as all the listings for the forthcoming London Jazz Festival. Elsewhere, new contributor Jim and his marvellous moustache bring us news of the first ever British Beard and Moustache competition, also down in Brighton, the good people at UnderCroydon have been busy beautifying another of Croydon’s subways and, on a darker note, our resident film-buff Tom has been busying himself with all things horror-related. Nice! On which note I’m going to bugger off and leave you all to it. We hope you enjoy this issue, and we’ll see you next month for the triumphant return of Auntie May, the possible return of Mystic Mike, and the return to normal service of Deep-London Magazine. I thank you. Until then, have a lovely November, wrap up warm, stay safe and we’ll see you next time Avanti, Allons-y, Cheers! Angela xxx

azz. It’s too small a word for such a huge pantheon of music. I like jazz, but I don’t like noodly, sounds-like-he’s-swallowed-a-trumpet, jazz. I like Billie Holiday, I like Louis Prima, and you can’t get oevres much further apart than those two, so when the guv’nor mentioned we’d be having a ‘Gypsy Jazz’ band for the opening party of Bishops Wine Bar, many crowded thoughts went through my mind. As it transpired, the Jonny Hepbir Trio with vocalist Sara Oschlag were, quite frankly, bloody brilliant. So good, in fact, that, by popular demand, we’ve managed to persuade them to make the journey from Dorset and Brighton to a small bar hidden in the centre of Croydon again

fans. “I had a career as a guitarist for a few years before I got into gypsy jazz, playing latin-jazz crossover type of stuff, but when I heard Django and his contemporaries I basically shut myself away for a couple of years and re-learnt how to play guitar. That was 20 years ago! “I've been lucky enough to have played with most of my influences (and cd collection), awesome gypsy players who totally inspired me. To put it in context, It's like a rock player doing the odd gig with

“Gypsy jazz is the scurvy, bastard son of jazz in many peoples’ eyes because it’s not high-brow, it’s party music. . . We like it that way.” on the 30th November. If you like a good time, you should come too. But what is gypsy jazz? Deep caught up with the main man, Jonny Hepbir, to find out that, and more; “Gypsy jazz is a wonderful cross between mainstream jazz standards of the 30's and 40's mixed up with the the pure gypsy way of playing guitar. The buck stops with the great Belgian gypsy guitarist, Django Reinhardt (1910-1953) he was a gypsy who heard jazz and approached it via his own roots. He didn't call it gypsy jazz he just did his thing, the name came about in the mid to late 60's - on the continent they called it Jazz Manouche, Gypsy Swing or Swing Gitane. But to think that a whole new and increasingly popular genre of music came from one person, is incredible. “Modern day celeb fans of gypsy jazz include Johnny Depp and Hank Marvin. My Quartet were hired by Sir Paul McCartney to play at his private Christmas party last December, he loved it! Our instrumental Trio (pure Gypsy Swing without the vocals) also had the pleasure of playing for Sir Terence Conran for his 80th Birthday at his home. More recently we played at the National Restaurant Awards, so it just goes to show the power of gypsy jazz is far reaching and has some influential

Eddie Van Halen, Steve Vai or Joe Satriani. “Supreme Gypsy guitarists I've played, gigged, jammed and secretly learnt from include Bireli Lagrene, Lulu Reinhardt and Stochelo Rosenberg.” Sara Oschlag (vocalist) isn’t a regular member of your group, but you do collaborate a lot, how did that come about? “Jason, Dan and I had been playing together in various groups on the Brighton/south coast jazz scene for many years when we decided to become a permanent Trio, Sara is actually Dan's girlfriend so when we decided to shoot some videos we thought, let's get her in to do a few numbers because she's very, very good! It all worked out rather nicely, we've found that both line-ups are really popular. Quite a few clients book both Trio and Quartet for their events, invariably we do a few Trio tunes even on a Quartet booking. Which is what'll be happening at Bishops!” Having a guitar enthusiast as deep’s deputy editor means we have to ask about your instruments... “The guitars we use are hand-made replicas of the original instruments that Django and his group used in the 30's/40's/50's. Originally made by the French Selmer company and designed by Italian luthier Mario Maccaferri, they 4

were a budget, affordable instrument back then. If you have an original you're looking at £30,000 and upwards. Mine and Jason's were about £2,000 each. “These styles of guitars were the fore-runner of modern day acoustics ie; cutaways, sound projection etc. They are wonderful instruments to play. You’ve played some pretty big gigs in your career, how do they differ from small gigs like your upcoming one at Bishops? “We're really looking forward to being back at Bishops! We had a great gig there in the summer, cool vibe, great crowd and supporters of excellent live music! We like playing full stop, Sir Paul or Bishops, we put out the same energy and dynamics.” With the London Jazz Festival happening in November, how do you see the jazz scene in Britain? “I think on the whole, the jazz umbrella is a wide one, it encompasses so many different styles. We have amazing musicians in this country and live music needs to be supported not just jazz. “Saying that, I do feel that gypsy jazz is the scurvy, bastard son of jazz in many peoples’ eyes because it's not high-brow, it's party music. It's music from the streets and bars of the continent not really Art's Council grant stuff. We like it that way, that's how we roll...” Catch The Jonny Hepbir Trio feat. Sara Oschlag on Friday 30th November from 7pm(ish) at Bishops Wine Bar, 1129 Whitgift Centre, Croydon, CR0 1UZ. FREE entry! New contributor Jim, accompanied by his magnificent ‘tache, head to the first ever British Beard and Moustache Competition in fuzzy Brighton. . .

O

n the 15th of September, hirsute gentleman from all over the world descended on the Corn Exchange in Brighton to raise money for Martlets Hospice and Macmillan Cancer Support at the inaugural British Beard and Moustache competition, and as the owner of a particularly fine piece of face furniture, I decided to enter (and celebrate my birthday) in style. Having arrived a little early and registered for the ‘English’ category

over 500, with the very welcome news that the bar was now open! With over 100 contestants in 11 categories, the competition was fierce, with many dressing in costume (first out of the gate in the Natural Moustache and setting the standard for what was to come, was one Giovanni Bulzinetti, arriving on stage in a mankini!). The English style was the second category to be judged and as we prepared to be called up on stage the butterflies in my stomach

Face fungus growing tip number two: Embrace the silliness - aim for the largest and most elaborate style you can get away with. . . (slender, very long growth from the middle of lip drawn to sides but no cheek growth; tips may lift slightly. Aids allowed such as wax, sprays, glues) we waited for the day to start in the Wagon and Horses and were quickly joined there by many of the other entrants and their supporters. At 12 o’clock all the competitors gathered in the Pavilion gardens, armed with kazoos, lead by a brass band and accompanied by the Brighton Morris Men we began the day with a parade through the town. The crowds that gathered to watch ranged from the envious to the disbelieving but all seemed to enjoy the sight, the surealness of which was only added to by a ukuleleplaying flash mob (also sporting false moustaches) that arrived to serenade us as we marched. On arriving back at the Corn Exchange, the Deputy Mayor of Brighton and Hove, Cllr Anne Meadows, officially opened the event to a capacity audience of

began to increase. Once upon the stage we presented ourselves to each of the judges to be scored (where Miss Brighton complimented my dickie-bow!) and then we moved to the front of the stage and were asked to say a few words to the audience. Once all the scores had been added up the top three were announced and they moved forward to the final at the end of the day. I failed to place and so it was with mixed feelings I was able to fetch a drink from the bar and settle down to enjoy the rest of the days events. And enjoy it I did so here are a few of the highlights: Geoffrey White who started growing his moustache during WW2 while in the RAF and arrived in his original uniform; Henry Scragg who had a galleon being attacked by an octopus sculpted in his beard; Frazer Coppin, World Champion (and now British Champion) who appears on the bottles of Musketeer Farmers Ale; Andrew Garnett with his puppet 6

sidekick; And finally our MCs for the day, Atters [who regular readers may recognise from The Chap Olympics - Ed] and Barron Bartholomew Black, who managed to keep us more or less on track throughout the day. So what advice would I give those thinking of growing some face fungus? 1. Make the most of Movember – that way you have the excuse that it’s all for charity! 2. Embrace the silliness – aim for the largest and most elaborate style you can get away with 3. Be prepared for random conversations – since growing the ‘tache you will be stopped and complemented by strangers! 4. Experiment with Prit-Stick – to control the growth. Prit-Stick is water soluble, has essential oils and gives a nice firm hold! 5. And Finally ENJOY YOURSELF! nyone who regularly uses, or cuts through, the Fairfield car-park towards St George’s Walk will have seen, a few months ago, a rather marvellous mural appear on the subway wall, created by UnderCroydon with the help of many local volunteers, and a very pleasing and uplifting thing it is too. Happily, they’ve been at it again, on the other side of the carpark in the subway that pops out into Queen’s Gardens. Petal Dunwoody went to meet its creators, UnderCroydon’s Jeanne Marie Eayrs and Susan Beresford, in the early stages of the project, to find out a bit more... Actually, regular readers may already have met Jeanne Marie and

- everyone can paint a square, they’re working to a grid system and as the subway is already tiled that works really well, they just count the number of tiles and then fill it in. So it’s just paint by numbers but not, it starts off as paint by numbers and then becomes more artistic, so it means we can get people in with all levels of ability and ages. We can get the whole of the subway covered with colour and then towards the end of the project your volunteer base who are maybe more artistic can put the final touches on.” What other projects have you done? “We’ve done the second subway off the Fairfield car park up towards

“They had a candle-lit memorial for Mike the Big Issue seller’s dog, Bones, underneath his picture on our mural, which was really sweet” Susan, local artists, forces for good and, in one case, Royal Standard conker champion, as we’ve featured their work in the community on a couple of occasions before (you know us, we like people who get off their arses and do stuff). What’s this mural about? “It’s called Picnics and Pantos, because it has the Queen’s Gardens at one end and the Fairfield Halls at the other, so we have theatre and storytelling at one end, wildlife and picnics at the other.” How many volunteers are you expecting over the course of the project? “About 120 I think - it’s a lot. Usually it starts quite slowly but then it notches up.” Do you need to be artistic to help? “No, not at all. Through Family Learning we have volunteers here anywhere from 4 years old upwards

the Nestle Building and the stepping out mural in the Whitgift Centre entrance by Poundland. That’s the one with the picture of the Morris Dancers, Rosie from Surrey Street and Mike the Big Issue seller with his dog, Bones. Bones has since died, sadly, but they had a candle-lit memorial by the picture, which was really sweet.” There was a lot of hoo-ha in the local press when your other work was (temporarily!) graffitied? “There was, but we knew it wasn’t going to be a problem, the paint is all water-based and then we put anti-graffiti varnish on top which allows it to be washed. It’s good because it allows it to be part of the normal Council maintenance programme - it doesn’t have to be dealt with specially or at any extra cost to the Council - it can just be washed as the tiles are as part of their normal maintenance.” 8

How do you let people know when you have a project coming up? “This one was mainly through the Family Learning Festival, they have a website, also through Project Change, and SEWA also have volunteering days so we have some people from that - it just happens that this project coincides with their national volunteering day.” How do you find projects, is this an ongoing series of murals in subways or is it more ad-hoc? “It’s hard to say. We’ve heard people discussing that they’d like us to do another subway, which we need to find out a bit more about. Often it’s just a matter of funding. This one’s funded because we applied for a small grant from Croydon Council, so it wasn’t directly a Council project, whereas the other subway was Croydon BID who were very keen to work with us, so they and Family Learning Week funded that one. This one is partly Family Learning Week but then we had to find money from somewhere else, so we applied for the grant. Most of our work varies between grants and charity and us approaching people. We generally come up with the project idea, unless someone specifically says to us ‘this area, what can you do?’ “ For more information or to find out about local volunteering projects like this wonderful stuff please visit: www.undercroydon.blogspot.co.uk/ p/ about-undercroydon www.campaign-for-learning.org.uk www.croydon.gov.uk under learning centres http://projectchangecroydon.org/ www.sewaday.org

Tom Dennett-Cook reports on the annual horror love-in that is Film 4 FrightFest. . .

appy FrightFest the 13th! In honour of the Halloween season Reviews From The Outer Rim recently attended Film4 FrightFest, the UK’s most outstanding Horror film festival, to grab you the latest info on the genre. Now celebrating its 13th year, not to mention that this year saw the 30th anniversary of its sponsor Film4, festival organisers hoped to pull out all the stops; including the introduction of a ‘Re-Discovery’ screen for old classics. The opening night served its purpose of lightly settling people in with its mixture of suspense, comedy and guts and was officially opened by comedian Ross Noble, who was in attendance to promote his film Stitches (a film about a deadly killer clown). The organisers decided to kick things off with the world premiere of the disturbing The Seasoning House; the story of a deaf mute orphan who is forced to work in a Balkan brothel (supposedly the first of a trilogy of War-set films dealing with themes of sexual exploitation). This is the first film to be directed by make-up and special effects master Paul Heyett, of The Descent and The Woman In Black fame. Amongst the cast and crew present was horror legend Sean Pertwee. Although part of a recent trend of Eastern European-set horror, The Seasoning House is a much rougher portrayal than most. The festival then jumped sharply to comedy with the world premiere of the delightfully stupid Cockneys vs Zombies. As builders in the East End open up a sealed tomb they unleash... you guessed it, zombies! You know you want to see it! Furthermore amongst the cast present was Alan ‘Brick Top’ Ford, who gave the film his cockney stereotype seal of approval. Finishing off the evening was Sundance Film Festival Favourite

Grabbers: A cute Irish monster movie about blood-sucking aliens that are deterred by alcohol. The solution? A lock-in obliviously. Expect Shaun of the Dead meets Father Ted (meets massive octopus-aliens). Friday was a big day for old-school horror fans for two reasons: Firstly, because it saw the cabal-cut of Clive Barker’s Nightbreed. What was shown was a fully restored version of the film, bringing together elements from Barkers original script, the 1990 theatrical version, and two previous lost prints. Hopefully the much debated subject of the ‘true’ version of Nightbreed has finally been addressed, and proved popular with fan;. Secondly Italian Horror master Dario Argento (the genius behind such titles as Bird with the Crystal Plumage and Tenebrae) was given this years Total Film Icon award for his outstanding contribution to the horror genre. Whilst on stage in a Q&A Argento was able to look back on over 40 years in the industry and was sharply critical of the current age of remakes / re-imaginings: in part due to a remake of his Susperia being in the works, which was given the go-ahead without him being informed. However next year will see Argento’s new film Dracula 3D, which, whilst strictly speaking not a remake, is certainly a story that has been done! Will Argento be able to show today’s young filmmakers how reimagining’s are done? Saturday saw the UK premiere of Outpost 2; the return of Klausener and his horde of nazi-zombies. We were thrilled to be able to have a chat with the film’s director, Steve Barker, who was happy to indulge us on his particular take on the sub-genre, its origins, its resurrection and why the figure of the

Dario Argento (right)

Sheridan Smith

nazi-zombie is so powerful (for the full interview, visit www. reviewsfromtheouterrim.com). New to the agenda this year was the introduction of the Varity Award on Sunday which was presented to Greg Nicotero by Simon Pegg for his outstanding work in the special effects field. Monday started off with a bang with the screening of American Mary, the new film by Eli Roth apprentices’ The Soska Sisters. American Mary tells the story of a struggling medical student pushed into the underworld of body modification. Perhaps a tad patronizing to the actual world of body modification, this film has a lot of laughs. The star of the film and Ginger Snaps fame, Katherine Isabelle, was in attendance, much to the delight of fanboys. Another film worth mentioning was a dark feature called Chained which presents the audience with the cycle of domestic violence as a young boy raised by a murderer is forced to help him in his crimes. Not so much a ‘horror’ film, but nonetheless a powerful film which draws you into the interworking of the criminal mind. This was followed by the European premiere of the Sam Raimi produced The Possession. This film would have been better headlining the closing night as it was certainly the biggest film of the festival. Taking the usually Christian exorcism theme and replacing it with the much older Judaic tradition, The Possession was a breath of fresh air to a sub-genre often hidden in the shadow of The Exorcist. For a full review of The Possession, flip to this month’s issue of Reviews From The Outer Rim. The festivals actual closing film was the suspenseful Tower Block, which was still a worthy contender for the title. Starring Sheridan Smith and Ralph Brown (both of whom were in attendance). As the final residents of a block of flats refuse to budge, they find themselves trapped there by a crazed gunman in a nearby building. Again, this wasn’t strictly speaking a horror film but it had certainly earned its space there by being a great example of modern British filmmaking. Highly recommended. All in all, another great year from the UK’s home of horror.

It’s been one year of us being in Deep! How time flies, Happy Anniversary! But enough mooshy stuff, here are some horror films... The Possession This is the new Sam Raimi produced exorcism film and unlike most exorcism films, The Possession doesn’t mess about with Christian mythology or hide under the shadow of The Exorcist. Instead it opts to delve into that much older religious tradition, Judaism. This adds a fresh take on the sub-genre and you’re never too sure where the film is going. Whilst at a yard sale father and daughter Clyde and Em purchase a mysterious wooden box that only Em can open. However once opened, the box releases a demonic force that slowly takes a hold over the young child. Sadly despite the new (Jewish) backdrop, little is done to distinguish this from other exorcism movies, but the approach to the demon is certainly unique as the evil force is a more corporeal manifestation, resulting in a greater physical threat. The keystone to any exorcism film is always the person possessed, expressing both and interchanging between, innocence and inherent evil. However Natasha Calis (Em) steps up to the plate and performs the role superbly. Ultimately this is a basic and straightforward possession film, but one that through its unusual takes on the sub-genre keeps you watching and intrigued: not terrifying, but certainly chilling. ..

ParaNorman From the makers of Coraline comes the latest in dark animated comedy. Not as powerful and with a few too many supporting characters, ParaNorman is still as quirky and even more lovable. Norman is a social outcast, mainly due to the fact that he can talk to the dead. However when a witches curse plagues his town with zombies, only Norman’s supernatural ability can save the day. With beautifully crafted stop-motion animation, ParaNorman has some great personalities; including Norman’s adorable happy-go-lucky best friend Neil and a great performance from John Goodman as the voice of Norman’s crazed uncle. A rarity amongst childrens films, ParaNorman doesn’t patronise its target audience and deals with some pretty adult themes. The film isn’t afraid to throw all kinds of moral dilemmas regarding fear, justice, tolerance, understanding and salvation at its young viewers. Furthermore, especially towards the end, the film gets rather graphic and dark. Combined, these elements make ParaNorman a fairly mature film. The overall humour is easy-going and light-hearted, alongside which there are many horror gags to chuckle over. The result of which is that despite its ‘grown up’ aspects, ParaNorman still manages to keep being a heart-warming, innocent and up-lifting children’s film.

House at the End of the Street This is kind of a mixed bag - as a whole the story is well-crafted and fresh but, paradoxically, by only mashing up other films pre-existing ideas and clichés. Right, so mother and daughter Sarah and Elissa move next door to the site of a brutal family murder - the only member still present being the assailant’s brother, Ryan. All seems well, but what horrors await Elissa when she befriends this misfit? To be fair, the film has some genuinely good characters, they’re all solid and interact really well. Max Thieriot who plays Ryan, is particularly enthralling and even though the film is predictable, that’s not what’s wrong here; indeed, it has the feel of an old-fashioned thriller. The problem is how it deals with the mysteries it asks you to solve - they’re so obvious! You’ll probably figure out the whole plot within the first 15 minutes, but that doesn’t make it easy, for the film is so muddled in how it presents itself it doesn’t make sense or even seem to have a point. That’s not to say it’s unwatchable, it’s actually quite fun and gripping, but as a collective whole this film is shambolic.

This film genuinely gave me the willies. It has a basic format , but is executed brilliantly. Ellison Oswalt (Ethan Hawke) plays a true crime writer who moves his family into the murder house of his current project for inspiration. Upon discovering a box of home movies showing various ritualised murders, he is initially thrilled, but the more he delves, the more he exposes his family to the threat of demonic forces. Sinister’s use of snuff / found footage is carried out with subtle realism, particularly their eerie silence. Another major success is the film’s use of haunting vocals (that have the feel of a call-to-prayer) that merge in and out . Sinister progresses from a basic horror story to that of fantasy which, though it works for the plot , does mean that it loses a lot of its initial impact . Curiously, towards the end you feel (and hope?) the film is going to surprise you by closing on a positive note, but this is disappointingly short lived. However one of the things that keeps you hooked is Ellison’s obsession with his investigations. This ultimately leads the film to the age-old and universal morality tale of self-inflicted destruction that accompanies a lust for glory.
