deep online at: www.deep-london.co.uk • www.issuu.com • www.facebook.com/deeplondon • twitter @deep_london Hello there.. ...and welcome to isue 98. I don’t know about you, but I’ve had a very peculiar old month of it. I won’t bore you with the details but suffice to say, there’s rather a lot more on my plate now than there was three weeks ago, which is why we’ve handed this issue over to our regular contributors while I learn to become, er, I think the word I’m searching for is... Organised? Is that right? It’s not a concept I’m familiar with, so you’ll have to bear with me... Happily we have a plethora of contributors at the moment, so in this issue you’ll find our film reviews, with an added bonus, Steph is back to confuse me at least with technology (she does it on purpose I reckon), DarkZac returns with more reports from the cabaret scene - we’re starting to worry about that lad, and of course, no issue would be complete without the random musings of Auntie May. We’ve also welcomed back Mister Booth who fills us in on the local hip-hop scene currently burgeoning away at The Oval Tavern. Yes, really. Elsewhere we’re delighted to see some other people trying to big up Croydon with large scale outdoor events on the 15th April in South End and on St George’s Day (I think, it could be the Sunday before - there’s a bleedin’ great advert for it in the mag somewhere so have a look) in Surrey Street and its surrounds. We hope to see you all down there doing your bit to support the community and stuff, innit? Finally, you’ll be pleased to hear that last month our resident tipster Flash Harry managed to pick a winner at Cheltenham, which is more than I did (actually, that’s not true, I had a 50 to 1 winner, but I only had 10p on it - I am indeed the last of the big spenders!), and as this month sees the Grand National occurring, my tip for that is... Oh God, I won’t bother, it’ll only kaibosh it. As long as the little hoofers come back safely I’ll be happy. Right, that’s it from me, it’s 5.47am and I’m down to my last cigarette, so I’m offski. Have a lovely April, hope the weather improves so all these pubs with BBQs can get them fired up. See you all in May when it will be merely one month away from both our 9th Birthday and our 100th issue. How marvellously exciting. Organisation, you hold no fears for me. Well, a few maybe but... Avant, Allons-y, Cheers!

Kids’ programmes. Undoubtedly the best things on telly. Deep catches up with some of the stars of the award winning ‘Horrible Histories’ as it prepares for it’s 4th series to air. . .

B

ased on the hugely popular Terry Deary books, for those who haven’t seen it, Horrible Histories is a sketch based show, full of comedy and, of course, horribleness, that teaches kids all about the gruesome stuff they want to know about history while surreptitiously teaching them stuff. It’s a kids TV programme that doesn’t talk down to kids, much in the vein of the wonderful ‘Sorry I’ve Got No Head’, but with education, be it generally disgusting education. Frankly, it’s genius, and is one of the few programmes I, as a 30-something magazine editor and my 9 year old niece have in common. According to the blurb, in series four,

Laurence: “The classic Horrible Histories blend of incredible facts, falling over and ridiculous accents, with lots of brand new stuff thrown in. There’s a whole host of new characters and even a new era for series four – the Renaissance. Not to mention some fantastic guest stars: Mark Gatiss, Reece Shearsmith and Steve Pemberton from the League of Gentlemen and Chris Addison in a very pretty wig. Plus, of course, more Stupid Death, more of Bob’s Reports and more annoyingly catchy songs.” Where do the ideas for the show come from? Laurence: “From history. We always start with the facts first. There’s a very

“I’m pretty sure history will judge us to be at least as idiotic as our great, great grandfathers. Plus they had much more fetching facial hair.” viewers find out how historical figures such as Dick Whittington and Robert the Bruce get on pitching movies about their life story, and which Historical Apprentice teams will find out they’re fired. There are also more magnificent musical interludes including Victoria and Albert’s love ballad, Charles Darwin with a Bowie-esque rock tune, and a new Battle of Britain RAF Pilots boy band. Death returns to quiz the recently deceased on the manner of their demise in Stupid Deaths, and King Henry VIII has a go at raising some much needed funds by taking part in a daytime TV show Cash in the Abbey. To be honest, we’re well overdue bringing this one to your, our lovely readers, attention, but happily they’ve a new series coming out in April, so here are regular cast members Jim Howick, Laurence Rickard, Mathew Baynton and Ben Willbond to tell you all about it; So, what can we expect from series four of Horrible Histories? Jim: “Lots of fantastic new songs, old friends making appearances and some extra-special guest stars. Oh yeah, and poo and wee and stuff.” 4

clever and hardworking (so he claims) historian called Greg Jenner who does months of research to find masses of fascinating facts. Us writers then suggest ways of translating these into funny sketches and write up the best of them into scripts.” What’s it like on set? Jim: “The cast and crew have pretty much been working with each other for almost five years now so at first it’s like a reunion and very exciting but then the hard work begins. The fact that you’re with people you love takes the edge off!” Is Horrible Histories as fun to make as it looks? Laurence: “The short answer is ‘yes’. I think that one of the keys to Horrible Histories is that the sense of ‘these guys are messing around’ comes across on screen. It makes

the show feel very inclusive. The wigs help too – sometimes we only have to look at each other as we walk on set and we’re laughing already.” Is it different acting in a children’s show? Mathew: “I don’t think any of us approach Horrible Histories any differently than we would an adult sketch show and that is perhaps one of the reasons kids love it. We don’t dumb anything down.” Several stars have made guest appearances on the show – do you have a favourite? Laurence: “I’m not sure I could pick a favourite, especially from this series. Having guest appearances from the likes of Chris Addison and the League of Gentlemen is a fantastic achievement for what is at heart, a children’s programme. However, it was their enthusiasm for the show that really blew me away. Here were these bona fide comedy heroes saying ‘I loved that song from series 2’ or telling you their favourite Stupid Death. Very proud moments.” What was it like working with the special guest stars on the show? “It’s amazing to have our comedy heroes asking to be part of the show – and it’s mostly thanks to Twitter. Chris Addison was tweeting about how much he loves the show so I asked if he’d like to come and be in it. A couple of messages later and he was in a massive Georgian wig.

“Getting the League of Gentlemen back together on the show was brilliant. They’ve done a series of Movie Pitch sketches that are spoofs of those old Orange ads, where each of our cast comes in as a different historical character to pitch the story of their life. Mark, Steve and Reece were extraordinary to watch – so funny and professional with fantastic chemistry. It was like a comedy masterclass.” What’s a typical day like on set? Mathew: “A lot of hard work, a lot of laughter and a lot of beard glue.” Ben: “There isn’t a typical day on set. You can be up to your waist in pond water one day and covered in fake poo sitting on a horse the next. There’s something new every day. The one thing you can guarantee is there will be a massively itchy beard waiting for you at 6am. Joy.”

the bar this year I reckon. One that sticks out is a Crusades/Monsters ditty, but there are so many other great ones.” Mathew: “I could never pick a favourite sketch before but we filmed one for this series in which I play a Victorian gentleman whose bum is on fire. It’s the silliest and biggest characterization I think I’ve ever gone for and I loved every minute of it.” Do you ever argue about who gets to play which part? Mathew: “The casting isn’t our decision, thank goodness! If it were it would be impossible. I think we all get ‘sketch envy; from time to time when we read a sketch we think is particularly hilarious and then find out we’re not going to be in it. But there is so much excellent material that it always evens out over the series.”

“I haven’t got a favourite sketch but in this series I play a Victorian gentleman whose bum is on fire. It’s the silliest thing & I loved every minute of it!” How long does it take you to get dressed and made-up to become a character on the show? Mathew: “It depends on the character, but usually there’s only an hour to do a make-up change while another sketch is being filmed, and then you jump into your costume and get on set. There’s a lot to film in a short space of time so the make-up team have to work miracles with a fraction of the time you would get on a film, for example. You are always playing the part of different characters in the programme – does that mean children don’t recognise you in the street when you look like yourself? Jim: “Quite the opposite. It’s impossible to disguise yourself when you’re seen in probably every kind of ‘look’. I don’t mind though, they’ll only come up to you if they like you, so that’s nice.” What’s your favourite historical period to portray in the show and why? Jim: “I always enjoy the Stuart era, lovely costumes, great facial hair and lots of things being discovered and burning down. I also enjoy all of the World War 2 sketches we do.” And your least favourite era? “Any period where my costume is just a loin cloth…” What’s your favourite sketch from the new series? Jim; “That’s very hard. We’ve raised

It seems like you all get on well on set – do you ever make each other laugh when you’re not supposed to? Mathew: “Yes, it’s an occupational hazard! It’s also the reason I love going to work.” What do you think Horrible Histories in fifty years time will be covering from today’s news? Laurence: “Much the same sort of thing – stories of how ridiculous people are. It is (luckily for our show) very easy to scoff at the past, because as society and science move on, you gain the benefit of hindsight. But just as we look back at the Victorians and think them mad for using radioactive toothpaste or thinking tobacco was a health tonic, who’s to say how people in the future will judge our use of GM crops or mobile phones? I’m pretty sure history will judge us to be as least as idiotic as our great, great grandfathers. Plus they had much more fetching facial hair.” Which historical figure are you most like? Laurence: “Christopher Columbus. He set out to reach China and India but ended up in the wrong continent and wasn’t even

the first person to discover it. Basically I’m a well-meaning, hard-working idiot who ends up in the wrong place, too late. Though thinking about it, I’m not that keen on sea travel. Maybe I’d make a better village idiot – it’s steady work.” Ben: “I’m probably most like a scared Roman soldier in the middle of a shield tortoise who just wants to go home.” Mathew: “I can’t see myself as a ruthless highwayman like Turpin or a party king like Charles II and people can’t even agree about who Shakespeare was, so I can hardly compare myself to him…so I’m probably most like the dunce who tried to smuggle weapons into Rome in the last series.” Jim: “Well, I’m sure there are days when I’m like a few of the characters. Most of the ‘known’ characters I play are either brave heroes or spoilt and psychopathic emperors or kings. I’ll stick to the ‘unknowns’. Cheeky peasant perhaps? Which historical figure would you most like to be like? Jim: “Wowsers. Christopher Wren left a few legacies, but probably someone who fought for immense good. William Wilberforce.” Laurence: “Hmm. I’ve always admired Isambard Kingdom Brunel, because he achieved so many things that people said just couldn’t be done: mighty ships, ground-breaking railways and bridges, the first tunnel under the Thames. He had an incredible ‘can-do’ attitude. But he was also a workaholic so perhaps not the ideal role model. So perhaps a cross between Brunel and Charles II – an engineering genius who knows how to let his hair down.” Ben: “Churchill. I’d get so much more done!” Mathew: “Darwin, Darwin, Darwin!” The 4th series of Horrible Histories starts on BBC1 & CBBC in April transmission date tbc...

Hip HoP DON’T STOp! T

hank god for Catherine Cee Cee North, Purpose Lee and Ashley Phonix Genus (pix, above). Nationally and locally we are in a right gloomy state of affairs, with money too tight to mention and the riots still a sour memory, yet in the face of this grey tide of negativity Croydon has a group of

scenesters who are pushing new boundaries in the arts and music field. The town needs pioneers like them. When I found out I was interviewing three hip hop people I was half expecting to encounter perhaps a slightly challenging atmosphere, or heck, at least a gun or two waved around. But no, the three promoters are sane and civilised, and the only sign of excess is a couple of beers. As we said in one of our previous issues (the famed and now collectible Croydon Bohemia issue – Editor) the submerged countercultural activities of this town are quite surprising if you dig around a bit, and Showtime, the monthly live hip hop performance night hosted by Catherine and friends at the Oval is no exception. First things first. What is the Cee Cee all about, Catherine? (I’d been wondering about this for quite some time). Disappointingly, there’s no single answer. Damn! Some are obscene. The most printable explanation is that it stands for Cool Cat, but also chubby cat – not a name redolent of the urban edginess with which hip hop is usually associated I think you will agree. ‘I had to have a nickname,’ says

6

Catherine, ‘cos it couldn’t just be Catherine North, could it?. ’Spoze not. But back to Showtime, the hip hop evening they promote on the first Friday of every month at the Oval Tavern, Oval Road (off Cherry Orchard, round the back of East Croydon Station), featuring a strong bill of performers. Hip artist Purpose Lee says they came up with the idea down the pub after realising there ‘was no good hip hop night in Croydon,’ and visualised a ‘community showcase’. He and fellow musician Ashley Phonix have a lot of friends in the hip hop scene and wanted to create a platform for talent they knew and also to give exposure to upcoming voices. They also see it as a great collaborative opportunity. As Lee says pithily: ‘Stuff produces stuff,’ which in my book is a sage-like comment about how creativity works: see Irish poet WB Yeats: ‘Works of art create works of art.’. Exactly. Anyway, enough of da schoolroom! You might think – I certainly did – that a good old fashioned boozer such as the Oval Tavern is perhaps an unusual place for a hip hop night, but that preconceived notion is soon blown away: ‘It’s nice,’ says Catherine. ‘I like the

feel of it here, it’s got a nice big garden and it’s out of the way, keeps it special.’ Ashley: ‘We want it to be the home of live hip hop in Croydon. We’d like to get big names down as well as local new talent, and put them up together; it would be a measure of equality. Equal size names on the flyer etc. The first Showtime attracted 270 people – without annoying the Oval’s regulars. ‘They seem to like it and get into it,’ says Catherine. And the nights are filled with creative sparks. ‘Things happen,’ says Ashley. ‘People come down and then we’re making tunes.’ ‘It’s good for us,’ adds Lee, ‘because we get crowd reaction and feedback for new material we want to try out.’ ‘We’re getting respect for it,’ says Catherine.Lee: ‘I’m pleasantly surpised by what’s happened, and it’s exceeded my expectations and we’ve made a whole new bunch of friends.’ They are keen to point out that Showtime is not necessarily a reflection of the gaudier excesses of hip hop. Ashley: ‘A lot of this is poetry with a musical blend.’ Word certainly appears to be spreading. They have had interest from

such diverse places as Camden, Wolverhampton, Brighton and Southampton. In the short-term they plan an open mic section and some rappers from abroad, to add ‘international flavours’. ‘We’re getting calls and people want to get involved,’ says Ashley. ‘We can expand, bounce ideas and network.’ Beyond promoting and organising the event, what does Catherine Cee Cee North do at Showtime? ‘I get pissed and get on the mic! I sort them all out and sound like an angry teacher! I’m the Matron of Hip Hop!’ Good album title, that. But at the moment the blonde promoter has no intention of trying to make it as a performer, which is a bit of a shame as she seems to have a real stage presence, and has a winning way with a funny anecdote. Ms North is a bit of a mystery woman, emerging on to this magazine’s radar a few years back through the Evelina Beckers’ international party jetset, who has also appeared in our sometime sister publication Croydonhello. Question is, because Showtime’s going so well at the Oval it raises the question of expanding the

7

night. At present there are no plans but Catherine says: ‘If we moved in Croydon we wouldn’t want to be doing anything on the chav strip! [can’t think where she means!] Maybe promoting a night in London or even a tour.‘ A one-off spectacular would be good,’ she adds. It would indeed be good. You could say that after the riots the streets have a bad name, but this showcase for the music of the streets tells a different story: one of artistic ambition and boundless optimism. So a Showtime extravaganza can only be a positive thing for Croydon. I bet they pull it off. Showtime is at the Oval Tavern, 131 Oval Road, East Croydon, CR0 6BR on the first Friday of each month. he evening started with finding the location, which wasn’t actually hard as it’s well signposted to the Battersea barge. I found myself walking down an alley with the Thames to my left, surrounded with history, overlooked by the gargantuan cathedral of art deco, that shining example of civic pride (and the largest brick building in western Europe) the Battersea power station, its four chimneys disappearing into the night. I wound my way through the passage quite excited nervous at what was to come passed several moored boats that shimmered in the night lit, by the

the next few hours, alive already with the crack and hum of patrons, cocooned by the boat, windows overlooking the river, tables and chairs arranged, a small stage at the bow waiting almost expectantly for the show, ready to embrace then thrust its occupiers into the audiences souls. I retired to the upper level of the boat for the Champagne reception (Ooh, get you! - Ed) and to meet the guest, acts and salubrious five judges who had been tasked with the most difficult of roles - the appraisal of one’s peers. Meeting amongst others the host and organiser of the London cabaret

“I made the mistake of paying for Ghost Story at the Lyceum - I could have gone to 10 cabarets for the money, and been in a better atmosphere. . .” reflected light bouncing off the river from the buildings that guarded the opposite bank and beyond. On nearing the barge I encountered two large dogs. The owner didn’t seem too bothered and, being in my nice formal clothes, I was in no mood to pet them - given the amount of barking it didn’t look they wanted petting. I don’t think they realised that no amount of barking would scare me away from completing my mission and, knowing they would come off worst, I ventured past with one eye on them as they followed! Some moments later I was standing in front of the barge - welcomed by a fire-breathing woman about nine feet high waving flaming wands at me she boomed ”Welcome to the London cabaret awards!” Later I snuck on shore for a breath of air and, ok, a cigarette, (giving up!) and had a chat while watching the night time performance as she lit up the sky. On entering the barge from a starboard side another warm greeting (not flaming), coat and bag removed, seating explained and understood, I took in my home for

awards Paul L Martin, clean cut, articulate -enticingly so - in a welltailored purple velvet blazer (possibly Moschino (should have asked)) Paul emitted a glow, warming the hearts of guests and artists alike with an electrifying smile, eyes that burnt into your your very being. Kool with a capital “K” charming, friendly, attentive. Everything you could ask for in a good host, in fact. Paul put together a ceremony spiced up with a wonder of delights from London cabaret scene, a true entertainer. And on mentioning Paul I must mention Vanessa Pope (host and organiser) looking amazing and so well organised. Even though she wasn’t one of the performers she stole the show for me in the outfit department, looks too for that matter. Vanessa managed to look super sexy whilst carrying off a curvaceous style and a dignity, that only few women can, splashed with charm, a smile that made you feel warm inside, eyes that you wanted to sink into… Ok I’ll stop there... Back to the awards, and we took our seats. A mixture of awards and acts followed, four fems on the 8

Thames wowed us with their retro charm and sexy chrome mic’s almost like dipping your toe into a late 40’s early 50’s radio show, their faultless, well-polished performance looked effortless, funny, and with perfect harmonies they were the cherry on top of the cream cake of cabaret. Mr.B The Gentleman Rhymer, a very dapper chap indeed in tweed well-trimmed moustache, banjo in hand tickled the crowed with 20’s and 30’s takes on contemporary tunes and the boat rocked as the people clapped and tapped their feet to the sounds of Mr.B. The acts and awards were woven together by host Jamie Anderson who did a sparkling job, constantly entertaining without even catching a breath. These awards were not just to recognise the professional creatives of Cabaret, but also to remind us that for usually under £10.00 you can drink, eat, have fun, and relax without the stuffy overcrowded and overpriced theatre experience - trust me, I made the mistake of paying to see Ghost Story at the Lyceum - I could have had 10 cabarets for the same money in a more chilled out and bubbly atmosphere. This is art for the masses, I say. Such an amazing night was had by all, we came alive bound together on a voyage of wondrous delights. Injected, infused with laughter and warmth, just like that feeling you have after a good meal, or that cake you eat but know you shouldn’t have, one of complete contentment, knowing you want a little more. I loved every minute, feeling welcomed and loved as part of an experience that adds to my growing understanding of what it is to give, to perform. Lighting up the world, with the gift of entertainment. What more perfect venue could there have been, as we sailed through the charming saucy seas of London cabaret within the Battersea barge - a world unto itself, a tardis filled with history and blurry echoes of previous incarnations.

ello and welcome back to all my friends and followers. Hold on a minute, I’ll have to turn Slash and Myles down – I can’t hear myself type. That’s better, now what was I going to say. Ah yes, Easter. That time of year when bunnies and lambs start frolicking, the sun gets slightly more reliable and Edith walks around with a chocolate moustache. But in order to get to Easter we have to get through the tedium that is Lent. Edith, who is hugely more Godfearing than I, tends to subscribe to the idea that to get something good, you have to balance it with “something bad”. Sort of tit for tat I suppose. Anyway, the morning after pancake day I’m tipping a generous slug of Baileys over my cornflakes and the familiar words ring in my ears, “So what are you giving up for Lent this year?” I deflect this by answering, “What are you giving up for Lent then?” Edith glints, “Asparagus”. “But you don’t eat asparagus” I counter, “Won’t God be cross?” Edith looks deflated. “Why don’t you give up biscuits?” I suggest helpfully (thinking of the packet of chocolate Hobnobs I was planning on not sharing that evening). Edith throws me a scornful ‘You don’t get me that easily’ look. “I know, I’ll give up hogging the swings in the park”, she says decisively, “Now you. Why don’t you give up getting dressed in the dark?” she says, raising one eyebrow at my choice of attire. I play for time by drinking the Baileys at the bottom of the bowl. Actually, what I want to give up is this tedious Twitter thing I started last month, but I feel I ought to give it a bit more time to ripen, as it were. Twitter seems to me to provide a mouthpiece for people who like nothing better than to listen to the sound of their own voice to make random, occasionally witty, comments.

Facebook, for all its faults, at least provides a whole conversation whereas following a conversation in Twitter involves jumping about from tweet to tweet like a demented chorakee bird. And unlike Facebook, most of the tweeters who appear in my feed are total strangers. Admittedly the problem may stem from the fact that I’m not very good at it and haven’t given it enough attention (doing it on my phone is a nightmare as I can’t see to read the screen) and I

grandson’s Wii and I’m disappointed that technology hasn’t advanced enough for me to take her with me in my pocket. On the music front this month, I was delighted to be reunited with the lovely Girlschool at the Garage, Islington. Now the longest-running all female rock band, they played to a mainly

“Having stumbled across Wii Bowling Night at The Ship, it occurred to me that I could keep fit and get drunk at the same time - perfect” actually have a life. Still, I’m not giving up just yet so I still have to find something to give up to shut Edith up. Eventually I decide to give up my addiction to ‘Embarrassing Bodies’ – but only until Easter mind you. This brave choice obviously left me with a huge gap in my life on Monday evenings, so I hunted round for something exciting to fill the void in my life. I stumbled (quite literally) across Wii Bowling Night in the Ship (www.theshipcroydon.com). Excellent, I thought, I can keep fit and get drunk all at the same time – perfect. Every Monday, teams of up to four people gather round the huge screen and battle it out for a prize – Marstons have agreed to stump up an impressive reward of £100 for the team who win the tournament. So far we’ve had a couple of practice nights which have involved me getting completely trounced by people who have obviously played before and much hilarity at the avatars of Ship regulars who pop up on the screen. I do have my own avatar but she lives on Edith’s Girlschool 10

male audience (hooray, no queues for the ladies). The girls stormed through an energetic set of old favourites and proved that you can look fantastic at 50+, not that I ever had any doubt about that myself! I’m back in Islington later this month to see my new favourite band – Tracer (more on that next month). Anyway, my advice to you all for a long and active life like mine is dance like it hurts, love like you need the money, and work when people are watching, or something along those lines. Follow me on Twitter @MayHarbinger. If you can be bothered.

A Reviews from the Outer Rim Special on cult film ‘The Room’ with producer and director Tommy Wiseau and co-producer Greg Sestero in attendance. . .

R

eviews From The Outer Rim recently attended a special screening of cult sensation The Room at The Prince Charles Cinema as part of a series of Q&A screenings with the films co-producer/actor Greg Sestero and director/writer/producer/actor Tommy Wiseau. Screening of this film always attracts a dedicated audience. Tommy and Greg mingled with fans in the lobby, many in fancy dress: Men in tuxedos, women in skimpy red dresses. On the surface this might seem quite normal, but in the context of the film and its story these details have special significance that only fans may notice. The Room tells the story of a love triangle between femme fatale Lisa, her naive boyfriend Johnny, and his best friend Mark. As Lisa and Mark engage on their affair, others get dragged down into the deceit. Sounds like a

active nature of its audience. As Tommy and Greg took to the stage, the crowd went berserk. What followed was less a Q&A and more a surreal stand-up with the questions being seemingly excuses to make jokes about the film, but no one seemed bothered. Tommy Wiseau was playing to the crowd, giving them the mad-cap persona that has grown with his public appearances. Pseudofilm quotes (“You’re tearing me apart London!”), Shakespeare recitals (we got The Tempest), audience members getting on stage for hugs, all were encouraged. As a collective we even joined in a rendition of Happy Birthday for one lucky patron. Greg’s occasional input was welcomed: the ‘straight guy’ to Tommy’s craziness. But I wondered, was Tommy’s crazy persona fake, conjured up to create a growing reputation? Are the films faults genuine or intentional? Many films have

Infamous for its wooden acting and absurd dialogue, ‘The Room’ has been labelled by critics, and even fans, as the ‘best worst movie ever’. . . standard generic drama? Yet many of the films critics and even fans have labelled it the ‘best worst movie ever’. The film is infamous for its wooden acting, absurd dialogue and endless list of inconsistencies. But what is interesting about The Room is how it rises above all this. If this article serves one purpose, it is to say this: The Room is something that has to be experienced. It is easy to see why it has become a cult hit. Comparisons can be made with other cult icons such as The Rocky Horror Show. In both cases, audiences attend in costume. In both cases, dialogue is both quoted as well as added during the screening. In both cases, audience members bring their own props and use them during the screening. For the uninitiated, beware! You may occasionally be hit by an American football or even brief squalls of plastic spoons! I, amateurishly, had not brought anything, but a friendly neighbour, noticing my plight, offered me some spoons. That’s the kind of group this is; a welcoming community. Therefore not only does The Room earn its cult status from its so-called ‘trashy’ reputation, but also for the

become more profitable as flops than as hits. This seemed a valid point considering Wiseau’s claim that everything in the film was done meretriciously, and if the film was made with good intentions, does its creator genuinely like the irony of its audience? After securing an exclusive interview we were able to ask these questions. I will begin by saying that Tommy Wiseau is entirely genuine. He’s mad; and trying to pin him down on specific topics is almost impossible. Tommy is his own man and proud of his work. At one point I was told that ‘you and other media are bashing me, but they [the audience] are out there so I hope when you write down the article correctly, you say that we love audience! We love audience! We love UK! We have groovy time! Don’t ask stupid questions! Etc etc!’ Always half joking and half serious, the interview was difficult to manage as Tommy flipped between being deeply analytical to easily distracted; stopping once to discuss the prospect of a ‘spicy wiener’ and again so he could sign an autograph. It was clear that this was a man who plays by his own rules and 12

Greg Sestero (left) and Tommy Wiseau

doesn’t care what people think. The relationship between the film’s quality and intent is just as mysterious. Despite Tommy’s denial, many faults seem unintentional. When asked about whether they appreciated the film’s negative reputation both men quickly dismissed any criticism. Greg summed up their response well; “It’s a cinematic experience. You can’t look at it otherwise. It’s an event, you just let it exist as its own entity... I think if you just look at the film in the usual parameters you’re just wasting your time.” The Room has clearly evolved beyond its humble beginnings. Perhaps Wiseau was in control of it at first, but its audience has clearly taken the lead and adapted the film for their own needs. As much as they may laugh at the film though, they also seem to be cheering it on. In an age of glossy yet cold blockbusters, this audience sees something noble in the passion and determination that has gone into making this underdog film. Perhaps this explains why Wiseau and Sestero embrace the films reputation, and welcome new fans with open arms... Twitter tech, tips and transgressions from Stephanie Darkes. . .

W

elcome to the not-sonerdy world of Stephanie Darkes, your no nonsense music & Social Media go-to-girl. March has rumbled by in a whirl of pasties, pipe dreams and dodgy Olympics statistics. I want to avoid the politics and talk about something that appears to be of importance on Twitter, and that is popularity. Let’s take a look at the most popular Tweeters* (*disclaimer, I removed myself from all lists to make room for those whose egos need more massaging...). I have to admit that I don’t follow many at

moment, she can’t really be that interesting can she? 5. Aston Kutcher (the eye candy) Ashton’s numbers increased drastically post Demi Moore break up, I followed him for a while but all he seemed to talk about was saving whales – Obviously trying hard to be a nice guy *Yawn*. At this point you will be saying “but they’re all American” yes folks, we may be a mighty little Island but ‘little’ is the operative word and in the world stakes the Yanks outnumber us quite substantially. So to counteract the very American top leaderboard, here is the top five as published in The

Number 4 in the ‘Popular Tweeters’ list: Kim Bloody Kardashian. She can’t really be that interesting, can she. . ? the very top, I’m not a big ‘sleb’ watcher, but the list does make interesting reading. I was very surprised to find Coldplay at number 17 and not so surprised that GaGa made number one. Lady GaGa, this is a woman who has her monsters well and truly under control, securing her place as the Queen on Twitter. 2. Barack Obama, we all know Mr Obama is a bit of a ledge (legend) but despite certain people’s claims that his is out of favour, he’s obviously got plenty of monsters of his own. 3. Britney Spears, just as everyone likes a bit of car crash TV, I’m sure that most of her followers hang on with baited breath waiting for the meltdown (maybe that’s unkind but when was the last record she released?) 4. Kim ‘bloody’ Kardashian who seems to be EVERYWHERE at the

Independent on Thursday 1st March: Richard Branson, everyone wants tips from this self-made multi billionaire, he first appeared on Twitter in 2008 and recently bought shares in the company, and he is a social media force to be reckoned with. When asked what the biggest regret of his career was in a recent interview, he replied: "Not starting Twitter." - Oh Richard, you don’t have enough fingers for all of the pies! Sarah Brown, wife of Gordon. From Prime Ministers wife to passionate campaigner, Sarah has a huge Twitter following (but she does make a very surprising number two). Alan Carr ‘chatty man’ chats incessantly on Twitter and goes down a storm, I enjoy Alan Carr’s Tweets, he’s a national 14

treasure. Ricky Gervais. I have to admit that I don’t find him funny but apparently lots of people on Twitter do, I guess now that he is an Academy Awards staple host his appeal has skyrocketed. Rob Brydon said Twitter was like a community but it had also opened him up to 'the most incredible abuse’, yet this didn’t stop him using Twitter to announce the birth of his 5th child... Check them out for yourself: http://wefollow.com/top http://twittercounter.com/pages/1 00 http://twitaholic.com/ www.independant.co.uk Speaking of Ashton Kutcher... a film about his life. Having only seen pictures of him in his later years I thought that Steve Jobs would be pretty chuffed with that bit of casting and then I found these pictures (prev page)… Can you see the similarities? I know who I’d rather watch. . . And speaking of ‘slebs’ on Twitter... Madonna made her one and only appearance on Twitter at the end of March to defend herself over allegations that she was glorifying drug use. DeadMau5 took exception to Madonna saying "How many people in this crowd have seen Molly," at a recent performance in Miami. The Twitter row was watched by millions but Mau5 was left deflated when Madonna tweeted: "I was referring to the song 'Have You Seen Molly?', written by my friend Cedric Gervais who I almost worked with on my new album." Madonna has a new album out MDNA - it has nothing to do with

drugs, honestly. Important changes for Facebook If you’re using facebook for business you might have noticed that your page has now bcome a timeline! “Oh no” you gasp “not more changes!” Yes, ‘fraid so, the folks at Facebook like to turn everything on its head every now and again to keep us users on our toes. But don’t be scared, the new timeline is actually pretty good, so relax and embrace it. I won’t bore you with all the details but here is a list of the key changes: Goodbye landing pages and email data capture! Facebook certainly know how to dominate a market, a lot of companies don’t use mailing lists any more, they rely solely on social media to talk to their clients. Facebook has now removed the ability to collect email addresses via your landing page / or direct them to one of your apps. Now you have to engage with your Timeline content.

This has been a very emotional issue; I’ve been scared, nostalgic, almost brought to tears and questioned my own sanity. And that was just The Muppets... The Artist Transcending international boundaries but in a dead medium, The Artist was an obvious risk. As a tribute to silent cinema, it uses techniques of acting, expression and filming that made it unique of its time, but The Artist is more than this - it tells of a turbulent relationship set in the merciless celebrity culture of yesteryear. Silent screen legend George Valentin (Jean Dujardin) befriends wannabe chorus girl Peppy Miller (Bérénice Bejo), but with the advent of ‘talkies’ Valentin’s career plummets into obscurity whilst Peppy’s stardom skyrockets. As Valentin struggles with his own pride and depression, Peppy desperately tries to save her idol from himself. Jean Dujardin makes this movie his own with his tragic and powerful portrayal of a falling star (well, him and Uggie the dog: who is totally awesome!), furthermore the choice to opt for a platonic attraction between the main characters rather than a simplistic love story provides them with depth. The Artist goes beyond a nostalgia trip for silent movie fans, it emphasises the era’s strengths, the innocence and almost dream-like quality of its storytelling while at the same time providing a universally touching and profound story whose scope is only widened by its silence.

film April_2012.indd 2

The Woman in Black Cinema seems to be loving its return to the haunted house genre recently. Now consider horror giants Hammer getting involved and you’ve really got something worth taking notice of. This is Daniel Radcliffe’s first outing since the Harry Potter franchise. Add to this pressure the story’s existing popularity on stage and as a book, this could have been a disaster, sending Radcliffe packing to the realm of forgotten childhood stars. Solicitor Arthur Kipps (Radcliffe) is assigned work on an isolated estate. The locals are fearful of his arrival, and quite rightly, for Kipps soon spots a mysterious lady in black, a spectre whose sightings have always awakened a terrible curse. This is an old school ‘spooky’ film with plenty of chills. It slowly creates atmosphere and vividly embraces its supernatural elements early on. This coupled with its use of beautiful period sets and costumes give the film a classically spine-tingling gothic feel, but it is ultimately a paint-by-numbers ghost film (complete with eerie Victorian dolls). Furthermore despite the fact that it escapes many trappings of modern horror such as gore, it embraces others such as cheap ‘stuff jumping out of you’ tactics which, although they work well at times, are overdone.

The Muppets MUPPETS!!!! That’s right folks, move over CGI because they’re back. Remember when childrens entertainment was innocent and not about grooming them for consumer culture? Well the muppets have returned to show that you can still get away with a puppet made out of felt and cardboard. After discovering that The Muppet Studios are to be destroyed, three fans must persuade the legendary entertainers to reform, however after years apart, not to mention being out of the public eye, can the muppets reform..? ...And does the world still want them? I got a tad emotional watching this! The various stories of what the muppets have been doing since their split (ranging from selling-out to therapy!) makes the film borderline depressing at times, but these more mature aspects are well conceived and outweighed by that sharp humour and charm that the muppets radiate. Combined, these elements provide stability. The only nagging negative is that some of the songs are simply naff. Apart from that this movie is a triumphant return to the simplicity of the earlier muppet films and was clearly a labour of love for all involved. As a nostalgia trip for adults and introduction for children, The Muppets rules!

A Dangerous Method The odd thing about this film is it approaches the edge of perfection. As a look into the early years of the Psychoanalytical movement it is intriguingly analytical itself, adding new dimensions to the history. Furthermore with ‘Body Horror’ director David Cronenberg at the helm, who better to present it? The film tackles the famous breakdown between Carl Jung (Michael Fassbender) and Sigmund Freud ( Viggo Mortensen), but adds the often overlooked role that Sabina Spielrein (patient of Jung and later psychoanalyst) and her affair with Jung had. Despite the fact that Keira Knightley (Spielrein) is out of her depth here, she just manages to tread water (even with an awful Russian accent). Whilst both Mortensen and Fassbender play their roles superbly, the character of Freud is barely touched upon. This seems part of the stunt in character development , which opts for symbolic roles rather than sympathetic beings. Furthermore the two main story elements (the Jung-Spielrein and Freud-Jung relationships) seem forced into a coherent causality. Ultimately A Dangerous Method ends up being almost too analytical: cold, rational and often void of emotion. This burdening flaw makes what is otherwise a fascinating characterdriven drama difficult to engage with. Which is a pity.

Celebrate the 200th anniversary of the birth of Charles Dickens in the first major UK exhibition for over 40 years. Recreating the atmosphere of Victorian London through sound and projections, you'll be taken on a haunting journey to discover the city that inspired his writings. Paintings, photographs, costume and objects will illustrate themes that Dickens wove into his works, while rarely seen manuscripts including Bleak House and David Copperfield – written in the author’s own hand – will offer clues to his creative genius. During your visit you'll discover how Dickens' childhood experiences of London, working in a blacking factory whilehis father was locked away in a debtor's prison, were introduced into the stories he wrote. The great social questions of the 19th century, including wealth and poverty, prostitution, childhood mortality and philanthropy, will also be examined, all of which set the scene for Dickens' greatest works. Highlights of the exhibition will include an innovative audio-visual experience bringing to life the desk and chair where Dickens worked on his novels, and a specially commissioned film by one of the UK’s leading documentary filmmakers, William Raban, which will explore the similarities between London after dark today and the night time city described by Dickens over 150 years ago. The Loudness, Mordecai, MLC Rock, Press to Meco And introducing 'COTZ' It isn't often that you hear of a group of people going out of their way to do good deeds for others; most rock bands seek fame and fortune, but one Croydon band has a different agenda. The Loudness were formed in 2004 by a father and his then 15 year old son and their friends to raise money for a one off charity gig for Croydon Mencap. The gig went so well and raised more money than they expected, so they decided to repeat the venture. 8 years later, they are still going, having raised in excess of £30,000 along the way for various good causes. On 13th April this year, The Loudness will play one last time. . . Tickets cost £8 in advance (£5 under 18’s) and can be obtained from theloudness@btinternet.com or from Angelene (07810 793609) DON'T MISS OUT - ALL AGES, CHEAP ENTRY AND A WEALTH OF VARIETY!
