I feel I should point out straight away here that for the last couple of days I’ve been as sick as a dog after breaking the habit of a lifetime and eating a pizza from one of my local takeaway/delivery 30 minutes or less emporiums. I can only surmise that some toppings require more than 30 minutes of cooking to kill off the botulism. I have therefore been up for many, many more unpleasant hours than is usual just before we go to print and this may account for any oddness you may find in this month’s editorial. Though how you’d tell this particular strain of oddness from the usual stuff I churn out on this page I’m not entirely sure. Despite food poisoning, however, I’m remaining remarkably upbeat - it’s been quite a good month - I got another year older, the Croydon Summer Festival was as fun as ever, the after parties were the pinnacle of jocularity and the Ship’s ongoing Battle of the Bands competition, of which I am again a judge (the fools!) is currently testing both my eardrums and my liver to breaking point in fine company. (We’ll have a full report on that next month when it’s all over and the tinnitus has subsided). I’ve refused even to be dismayed by a virulent ponce I met the other day in a pub in London. In fact, I just found myself quite pleased with the phrase ‘virulent ponce’. A good month then, but the main reason for my ongoing sanguineness is that this month I’m off to Stratford Upon Avon for a week or so on a bit of a break, and to see some Shakespeare (see cover etc) and I’m looking forward to it immensely - a fact I’ve bored a few of you with already at various social gatherings... Enough of that, however, and back to this issue. We appear to have put together one of our inadvertant music specials again. It’s not planned, it just happens that way sometimes. What we actually intended to put in this month’s mag was a load of rather sophisticated stuff to tie in with the Hamlet thing - you know, theatre, posh restaurants etc. Unfortunately two things happened: a) As mentioned above events overtook us as the whole of Croydon decided to go mad on the live music front and cram everything into one month, and b) Posh sophisticated stuff costs a fortune and I’m busy saving for the holiday. On the upside, though, this relative abstinence now means that while I’m away I shall be able to live in the manner to which I am unaccustomed in a smart hotel by the river, eating lobsters and getting hammered on Krug. Ok, actually it doesn’t, but there are still a couple of lottery draws before I go, so fingers crossed. No doubt whatever happens I will have some sort of travelogue article and a sphincter-tighteningly awful encounter with bemused members of the Royal Shakespeare Company to regale you all with next month, probably. To be fair, we have actually managed to squeeze in a couple of slightly upmarket articles to raise the tone, one of which is about our very own classical music composer, Samuel Coleridge-Taylor, whilst the other regards some rather splendid Champagne beers. And all this alongside a plethora of live music out and about around town, so it’s all good. Anyway, I think that’s about it from me for another month. As usual it is now silly o’clock in the morning and I’m off to bed, so I’ll wish you all a safe, happy and food-poisoning free August and bid you goodnight. ah, Shakespearian humour at it’s best and also, somewhat appositely, a line from Doctor Who, which leads us cunningly into this article wherein we catch up with The Doctor, or rather David Tennant, ahead of his run at the RSC playing one of the old baldie-bard’s finest, Hamlet. (And, in a strange outbreak of sci-fi serendipity, the actor playing, unusually, both Hamlet’s dad and his uncle in the production is Patrick Stewart, or JeanLuc Picard from Star Trek. Make it so indeed.) As it transpires, and as may or may not be interesting to you, me and Hamlet go way back. I studied it at school and beyond for English Lit. (a welcome change of pace from bleedin’ Jane Eyre, which was also on the curriculum). I enjoyed it so much that I ended up taking time out before my final exam to catch Kenneth Branagh playing the man himself in an unabridged almost four hour production up at The Barbican. Which was absolutely stunning, if slightly hard on the arse. Never been so numb. Nice half-time choc-ices though. Oh yes, never let it be said that we aren’t classy. Anyway, long story short, Shakespeare’s tale of the Prince of Denmark is my favourite of his plays (ooh, get me) in that it’s got it all murder, ghosts, betrayal, revenge, madness, musings on the nature of existence, some really filthy lines and a tragic denouement, and if that’s not a cracking night out at the theatre then I’m not sure what is. And when you add two of Britain’s leading actors into the equation, and the fact that it’s directed by the Royal Shakespeare Company’s Chief Associate Director Gregory Doran, which indicates they’re really pulling out all the stops on this one, then I reckon it promises to be something particularly special. The only downside is that as far as we can tell nearly every performance, both in Stratford and in London, is sold out, as you’d expect given the huge popularity of Doctor Who, and the RSC must be rubbing their little hands together - talk about popularising

Shakespeare. There is a light on the horizon though for anyone unable to get their mitts on a ticket for Hamlet in that not only is Mr T taking the lead in that, he’s also supplementing the day job with a stint as part of an ensemble cast in another Shakespeare number, the rarely performed exuberant comedy Love’s Labour’s Lost, at the same time, which is a bit of a feat of memory if you ask me. But enough of me wittering on, time to speak to the man himself: How do you feel about coming back to the RSC to play the title role in Hamlet and Berowne in Love's Labour's Lost? ‘It feels very familiar. Theatre is what I've done more of than anything else. Admittedly I've been on sabbatical to 'television-land' for the past few years

There's definitely a sense of a company that's got an idea of what it is and what it's for, and how it can best achieve that, and it's very exciting to be part of that.’ Are these two roles you particularly wanted to play? ‘Yes – they are two of the greatest roles around. Hamlet is often regarded as the acme of acting to test yourself against, which isn't a particularly helpful thought, to be honest. Of course it is very flattering to be asked to do that role because of everything that is attached to it. But once you get into rehearsal you have to relinquish thoughts like that and just try and tell the story. It's still just a play and you can't start approaching it in a different way than you would approach any other role.’

But this feels like the day job. It's what I do. So it's great to be back and working with Greg. It's an incredibly friendly company which is a great relief. ‘Most of the company have already done A Midsummer Night's Dream so they would have been perfectly within their rights to be a little bit sniffy about a new boy coming in to do the next show, but they've been very welcoming and enthusiastic. There's a great feeling about the company and a real sense of something new and exciting about the RSC at the moment.’ Does the Company feel very different now then? ‘It's different but the same. The principle that we're out to achieve hasn't changed but there's a new sense of ensemble which is very exciting to be part of. There's an enthusiasm from everyone and a willingness to muck in, and the different disciplines and departments seem to be more integrated than I remember last time I 4

Although it's very early in the rehearsal process, is there anything you can share about your approach to your role in Hamlet? ‘We've just got going really and are only now on our feet. We've done a lot of text work, which has been invaluable, and we are now finally trying to put the play together in a more traditional sense.’ How have you found working with the director, Gregory Doran? ‘It's been terrific. I worked with him once before, years ago. It was a really fun job – a double bill of one act comedies. That was fantastic, and a big success but I was aware that Shakespeare was his real passion and seeing him talking about the play and investigating the play – he's clearly born to do it. It's a real pleasure to be in his rehearsal room.’ What does Shakespeare mean to you, particularly performing his work here in Stratford-upon-Avon? ‘Of course you're aware that if you

do these plays here in Stratford you're instantly joining a line that goes through some extraordinary individuals, actors and directors, and it's very exciting and humbling and terrifying and thrilling to be part of that line. Obviously there's something about Stratford – because it's Shakespeare's home town and because of everything that's been invested here in terms of theatrical history that makes it a very special place to work in.’ Do you have any significant memories of your previous time working with the RSC? ‘This is the third season I've done and I've always had fantastic experiences

soliloquies. I'm looking forward to using the space, and using that connection with the audience. I imagine that's how those speeches were written to work. On a thrust stage, you can't help but have a connection with the audience. It will be fascinating to see how that will influence the playing of those scenes.’ What do you think is the basic difference between acting on film and on stage? ‘They are two completely different jobs. They are, of course, both about pretending to be other people. But rehearsing a play is about finding an emotional journey so that you can

I've got some fond memories of the six plays I've done before and I made some great friends. Being part of the Royal Shakespeare Company is something I've always been proud to associate myself with and to be publicly aligned to.’ Are you looking forward to working on The Courtyard stage for the first time? ‘Yes. I've seen the current productions there. It's immediately very reminiscent of the Swan in which I've always enjoyed working. Considering how many people it seats, it feels nice and intimate – particularly for something like Hamlet which has those long

repeat it, whereas television is about getting that moment once when all the technical elements are in alignment and it's locked down for evermore. From an actors' point of view you have more control of the event in theatre. When it's in film it's created in post production essentially from a bunch of cuts, whereas here that moment happens in the auditorium and whether it works or not can be unique to each individual performance. It's just a very different experience both from the acting point of view and the audience point of view.’ Can you tell us anything more about the cast you are working with? ‘The fact that they are such a

welcoming, enthusiastic and motivated bunch of people is great because that motivates you. You want to be part of that. There's a real sense of company and ensemble which is often talked about in theatre and very rarely achieved. The very set up of the Royal Shakespeare Company at its best can really exploit that. I certainly feel like I'm part of an ensemble here which is great.’ How you were cast for these roles? ‘There was a slight meeting of the moons. I was talking to Tara Hull, one of the producers here, about the possibility of doing something for the company. And I think that Greg had a similar idea around the same time and there was a sort of conflagration of events and suddenly we're here. Champers! It’s summer, and for once it’s actually hot, so what better way to chill out while watching England lose the cricket than with some marvellous Champagne beers?

s anyone unfortunate enough to have engaged me in conversation about festivals and my appearance or otherwise thereof will know, one of the reasons I don’t go to them anymore is inextricably interlinked with champagne beer. It’s like this; a few years ago there was a beer on the market called Zice, and it was made with champagne yeast, and it gave you the same giggly kind of pissed that champagne does, and it was good. Inexplicably, however,

taste test I think.... First up is the more readily available of the two, King Cobra, an upmarket offshoot of the popular Indian brew. And here we encounter something of a problem. If you look at the American version, which is called something different but has the same label and bottle it is indeed a Champagne beer, but look at the UK one and it’s not labelled as such. We think this may be to do with the EU labelling laws, but who knows.

King Cobra has a label which apparently ‘incorporates real gold’ and also has handy instructions as to how to drink it properly... it wasn’t very popular and having been given a heads up by my local offie that it was soon to be no more, I bought a couple of crates to take to Glastonbury to enjoy at my leisure. Unfortunately, the skanks at that year’s event were having a field day robbing tents, as mine duly was, and all my beer was stolen. Actually, it wasn’t, it was more depressing than that as the feckless crusties who ripped me off decided they didn’t like this spectacular brew and so, instead of leaving it where it was, decided to empty every bottle around our camping area and then bugger off, no doubt to have a jolly good laugh about it, thus leaving me beerless amongst the evidence that there was beer a-plenty not two hours previously. The words ‘no need’, and indeed ‘you bloody bastards’ spring to mind. Anyway, because of this I keep a weather-eye out not only for thieving plebeian scumbags but also for the wonder that is champagne beer, so imagine my joy recently when I discovered not one, but two appearing on the market. Time for a comprehensive and no doubt drunken 8

All we do know is that King Cobra is the only lager and pilsner-type beer to be fermented in the bottle, and it comes in an elegant Champagne bottle, which is good enough for us. The label, apparently ‘incorporates real gold’ in its little heffalumps and it even gives you instructions on how to drink it on the label. If, for instance, you want a cleaner, crisper more bubbly tasting lager-type drink, don’t jiggle it about, but if you want a more alebased taste, turn it upside down and get the sediment at the bottom to

have a bit of a mingle. Ingenious, but difficult to review taste-wise, as you have to be clear which one you’re necking. It won 11 Gold Medals at 2005’s Monde Selection (the ‘Beer Olympics’) and, oh yes, did we mention it’s 8%? Anyway, here’s the science, and also a staggeringly poncey review we found for it on the web: The beer is double-fermented, the first time in Poland, the second time at the legendary Rodenbach brewery in Belgium then bottled live. ‘It pours a brilliant gold with a high-rise white head. It has complex aromas of shiny red apples and a subtle, biscuity richness, with a touch of preserved lemon. On the palate it has terrific smoothness and opulence, with a definite hint of sweet/sour, lemony Lambic beer, but pristine flavours

‘On the palate it has terrific smoothness and opulence, with a definite hint of sweet/sour, lemony Lambic beer’ Yeah, that’s what we thought too... through the mid-palate where the alcoholic strength and scrumpy-like bite takes a hold.’ Hmm, yeah, that’s exactly what we thought as we poured it down our throats at some speed. It’s nice, ok, job done, although not terrifically Champagne-y. A 750ml bubbly-sized bottle of King Cobra will set you back around £4 and is available at most major supermarkets (we got ours from Waitrose). Our second contender is slightly more difficult to get hold of in the supermarkets but can be ordered online, and its name is Kasteel Cru. This stuff is more reminiscent of the legendary Zice in that it arrives in normal-sized beer bottles and there’s no sediment to muck around with or tricky wirey Champagne cork to take someone’s eye out with after you’ve had a few. Although having said that, according to their website, ‘Kasteel Cru is presented in its own distinctive bottle, produced by expert glassmoulders in Reims, the capital of the Champagne region.’ Well there’s a thing, we are indeed beer connoiseurs as we hadn’t actually noticed, being more enamoured of the lovely slinky little glasses that arrived with our order. Kasteel Cru looks more like Champagne when you pour it out, a pale golden colour with bubbles aplenty streaming up to a white foam rather than a head which dissipates - all as you would expect from a beer which does actually make quite a big deal of being brewed with Champagne yeast. It also makes quite a big deal of its other ingredients - ‘...spring barley, local to Alsace and the pure water of les Vosges mountains are brought together in mash tuns to produce a golden coloured wort. [no, I don’t know either - Ed] ‘ To the wort are added the choicest Hallertau hops, from which the very

subtle bitterness of Kasteel Cru is born. The 'Champagne method' takes the form of a 'Prise de Mousse' yeast, in a fermentation which helps to produce a beer that is crisp and clean and gives a natural acidity which perfectly balances the beer's maltiness.’ Which again is all a bit poncey but basically boils down to the fact that you can taste the Champagne in this one, it tastes clean thanks to the pure ingredients and it is absolutely lovely refreshing and zingy and it looks gorgeous in the glass. As mentioned, we had a bit more trouble getting hold of this beer out on the streets as it were. It says Ocado stock it but Waitrose, who are essentially they, didn’t. Kasteel Cru only give web-based suppliers any time on their site, and they are, as mentioned, Ocado (www.ocado.com), Only Fine Beer (www.onlyfinebeer.co.uk) and Grape Passions (www.grapepassions.co.uk), where a crate of 6 x 330ml bottles will set you back around £9.30. As of the time of writing we’re not aware of any pubs or bars which sell either of these two, so you’ll have to track them down yourselves. So which one should you try? Well, it depends what you’re after having tasted both beers neither, of course, are a substitute for your actual Champagne, but both are a bit different from your usual beers and both have their own particular merits. On price, millilitre for millilitre it’s too close to call, or rather too close for us to work out with any semblance of accuracy (we have been drinking, after all) and although Kasteel is 10

significantly less potent, it is essentially more like the taste you’re after from a Champagne beer. All in all, we reckon that they’re both particularly fine drinks and your best bet is to give them both a go - we do this for a living and we can’t decide. And, unlike proper Champagne, neither of them is going to break the bank. From rooting around on the web and whatnot we gather that there are a couple more Champagne beers about to be launched onto an apathetic public and we can only hope that they are a more well received than my beloved Zice was and can therefore recommence being my drink of choice for sun-baked sofa-based telly watching cricket days, although I possibly wouldn’t risk them at any festivals. www.cobrabeer.com www.kasteelcru.com

Hello and welcome to another in our occasional series on the history of this place in which we live and our local heroes. This month, a bit of classical music for you from Samuel Coleridge-Taylor...

amuel Coleridge-Taylor was born on 15 August 1875 at 15 Theobalds Road, Holborn, London – just round the corner from Fetter Lane, a spot which Dickens described as the “dingiest collection of shabby buildings ever squeezed together in a rank corner as a club for tom cats”. His parents were registered as Daniel Hugh Taylor, surgeon, and Alice Taylor, 'formerly Holmans'. It seems likely that he was named after the poet Samuel Taylor Coleridge. His father returned to his native Sierra Leone after studying at Taunton and King's College, London - but contrary to the claim in ColeridgeTaylor's birth certificate, there is no record of his father's marriage to Alice. The young Coleridge-Taylor might never have known his father but was hardly neglected. Alice Martin, the mother who brought him up in Croydon, married a railway storeman with whom he seems to have been on good terms. He received violin lessons from Joseph Beckwith, a local orchestral musician, and he sang from the age of 10 in the choir at St George's Presbyterian Church, Croydon, and the parish church of St Mary Magdalene, Addiscombe. He was very well aware of the difficulties he faced because of the colour of his skin but he was a keen student and in 1890 won a scholarship to the Royal College of Music, originally as a student of the violin, then graduating to studying composition with the composer Sir Charles Villiers Stanford. At a stroke he had levitated into the most influential musical environment within reach, and acquired patrons who could help make his career. At the Royal College of Music Coleridge-Taylor encountered some of the brightest talents of his time, and most of his early concerts were at the RCM or involved his fellow students.

At one of his concerts (March 1896), for instance, two of his most famous colleagues, the young composers Gustav Holst (composer of The Planets) and Ralph Vaughan Williams played in the orchestra. Even before Coleridge-Taylor's work was being publicly performed August Jaeger, an editor at the music publishers Novello & Co., had been tipped off about his talent, and Novello's published the first of a series of his anthems, starting a lifelong association. By an interesting coincidence Vincent Novello, originator of the firm, had been taught almost 100 years earlier by the black violinist George Polgreen Bridgetower. Coleridge-Taylor won the Lesley Alexander composition prize two years running (1895 and 1896), and he met William Hurlstone, his best friend who died early in 1906, a major influence on his taste. In 1896 he also met the African-American poet and novelist Paul Laurence Dunbar, who was visiting London. His meeting with Coleridge-Taylor began a series of collaborations such as The songs Seven African Romances (1897) which is light and tuneful, and Dream Lovers ("an Operatic Romance", 1898) which is the story of a Moroccan prince and his 12

friend finding true happiness with two sisters. There are several clues to suggest that Coleridge-Taylor's true metier might have been musical theatre, but he left the RCM as a highly-esteemed and promising young composer. His talents were recognised and promoted almost immediately. His first major commission came via the composer Edward Elgar, who described him as "the cleverest fellow going amongst the young men”, and recommended him for a commission at the famous and influential Three Choirs Festival. In September 1898 it was his Ballade in A minor, a melodic piece,

with echoes of the great Romantics Tchaikovsky and Dvorak, the Ballade which furthered the composer's reputation, and reinforced his confidence for his next composition and his greatest success - Hiawatha's Wedding Feast. Based on the poem by Henry Longfellow and published in advance of its performance, various luminaries committed themselves to attend. Sir Arthur Sullivan, although not far from death, insisted - “I'm

In a time when amateur choirs and sheet music were part of popular culture Hiawatha's Wedding Feast was a score to enjoy, but it was a hard act to follow, and the composer's reputation never again reached the same heights. The music which followed Hiawatha included the Scenes from an Everyday

‘Hiawatha’ was a breath of fresh air. Hiawatha was a breath of fresh air in a choral repertoire which was intensely serious or religious. It was secular fun, superficial and familiar exoticism, a matter of feathers and skins and colourful names, but it was at the same time a big, lovely

Romance suite (1900) and the concert overture Toussaint L'Ouverture (1901), but these were not received with the enthusiasm for which he might have hoped. In 1903 the Three Choirs Festival commissioned another choral work, The Atonement which failed to satisfy a public still in love Hiawatha's Wedding Feast. ColeridgeTaylor had famously sold the rights to

Hiawatha for a flat fee of £25 15s. He received £250 for the two sequels, more than twice his annual income at the time of his death, but he now had a family to support (On 30 December 1899 Coleridge-Taylor married Jessie Sarah Fleetwood Walmisley who had been a fellow student at the RCM. They had a son, Hiawatha (19001980), and a daughter, Gwendolyn (later Avril, 1903-1998), who were both to have musical careers) and he needed to continue working. Between 1898 and 1907 he was chief conductor of the Croydon Symphony Orchestra and resident conductor to the Westmoreland Festival, as well as the Rochester Choral Society. In 1904 he became chief conductor to the Handel Society concerts, a post he held until his death. At the same time he served as guest conductor for performances of Hiawatha (by 1904, it had been performed 200 times in England). He also lectured in Croydon, later joining Trinity College of Music (1903), Crystal Palace School of Art and Music (1905) and then the Guildhall School of Music as professor of composition. In between jobs he acted as an

adjudicator at various festivals and competitions, including the National Eisteddfod of Wales in 1900. At the same time he became a frequent collaborator of the actor-manager Herbert Beerbohm Tree at His Majesty's Theatre, and (presumably in his spare time) he also wrote other choral works, as well as pieces for strings and for piano, orchestral works, and an unpublished grand opera (Thelma, 1907-09). It would not have been surprising if Coleridge-Taylor's private and domestic life had suffered under the pressure of work, but there is plenty of evidence about the value he placed on his family life. The composer Havergal Brian bumped into the couple in Hanley and wrote about them as "...strikingly winsome, and with Hiawatha in mind, I pictured them as journeying to the wedding feast". According to Havergal

Norwegian, I have tried to do for these Negro melodies.” After reading the work of the African-American writer W.E.B. Dubois, he attended the first Pan-African conference in London in 1900 and became part of a loose circle of black activism. His name was already well known in black America. In 1901 a Samuel Coleridge-Taylor Choral Society had been founded by black singers in Washington DC. His first visit three years later was a grand occasion attended by 2,700 people. Two further tours of the US reinforced the composer's reputation; and, during the 1910 tour, ColeridgeTaylor conducted exclusively white orchestras as well as African-Americans - an event without precedent. In the following year he undertook his final commission, the Violin Concerto, whose first version, on its way to the

The scandal of Coleridge-Taylor not receiving royalties from his music led to the formation of the Performing Rights Society Brian's account, the man himself seemed to be self-confident and at ease in his environment: "ColeridgeTaylor spoke in short, swift sentences, linked to many pleasantries. When he mounted the platform, he was confronted with seventy players of the Hallé orchestra and a chorus of eighty only. At the first entry of the chorus, he stopped suddenly and, addressing the orchestra, said rather dryly 'Gentlemen, half marks throughout!’". But Coleridge-Taylor's success and fame did not exempt him from racial harassment. Most painful was the fact that his wife Jessie was also a target of abuse. His daughter records his response to the groups of local youths who would repeatedly shower him with insulting comments about the colour of his skin: “When he saw them approaching along the street he held my hand more tightly, gripping it until it almost hurt.” Coleridge-Taylor took a passionate interest in the issues of race, the politics of colonial freedom and his own African background. His ‘TwentyFour Negro Melodies’ has a revealing quotation in the preface in which he writes: “What Brahms has done for the Hungarian folk music, Dvorak for the Bohemian, and Grieg for the 14

US première, went down with the Titanic. By a strange irony, the central movement was based on a spiritual entitled ‘Keep Me From Sinking Down’. On 28 August 1912, ColeridgeTaylor collapsed at West Croydon station while waiting for a train. He died a few days later of acute pneumonia at his home in Croydon, on 1 September 1912, at the age of 37. He was buried in Bandon Hill Cemetery, and his funeral became a major public event. A memorial concert produced £1,440 for the family, a tidy sum given that his income in the year of his death has been estimated at less than £200. The music world was shocked by the fact

that Coleridge-Taylor and his family were not to receive any royalties from the fabulous commercial success of Hiawatha's Wedding, and the scandal fuelled the formation of the Performing Rights Society as a lobby for legislation on rights and royalties an organisation which still represents performers to this day (see the little signs outside live music pubs etc.) Hiawatha's Wedding Feast continued to be hugely popular throughout the 1920s and 30s, but after the Second World War ColeridgeTaylor's music seems to have disappeared from sight. He left, however, the legacy of a talent which drew on his ambiguous and difficult origins without shutting him off from the currents of his time and place. He had become, against all odds, part of his culture's tradition, while openly declaring the mixture of elements and ideas which moved him. eople are always asking me, “Auntie May, just how do you do it?” And I tell them that that I don’t usually give advice about THAT sort of thing, but perhaps I could make an exception in their case…and then they say, “No, not that, I mean how do you cope with all that burning the candle at both ends, chasing around London searching out the best in live music, drinking, your enviable literary success, random inventing, applying eyeliner to anyone who stands still long enough, making flapjacks, providing a tip-top advice service on any subject whatsoever, being nominated for Superherodom (thanks Creepy) and generally overseeing Croydon’s

maelstrom of musical madness? How do you do all this and still manage to look so, well, fabulous?” And I have to say I didn’t always look like this. Apart from a brief spell when I looked like a 1940’s starlet (well, it was the 1940’s), I did for a while look like a regular septuagenarian and not the “Rock Mutton” that I am now known as. But that was before “Pimp My Nan”, the less well-known spin-off of “Pimp My Ride” and without the excruciatingly annoying Tim Westwood. I have to say, the hardest part was persuading Martin Degville of Sigue Sigue Sputnik to part with his trademark hat – the piercings were a piece of cake after that! Then, after the judicious use of some blue hair

stuff from Time*Bomb and the addition of a nice badge saying “I’m normal – please date me” the transformation was complete. And not a moment too soon I might add, as I was very excited about the phenomenon that is Punkstock. Having rescued my old bondage trousers from the loft and pinned the moth holes together with safety pins I set off for Walkabout to see what all the fuss was about. Now usually I get in free to all these events, but I insisted on paying my way this time because it was for charity, raising money for Parkinson’s and Marie Curie Cancer Care. I arrived just as Dead IDentities started their set, which just about numbed my ears for the rest of the night! I kind of missed The Loyalties due to having to hold up a wayward drummer with a Hangover and adjudicate on a table football match but

I caught Drongos for Europe who were operating a kind of payto-play system – the crowd put money in the collecting tin and they played. The headline band GBH then hit the stage. I decided not to brave the mosh-pit but I needn’t have worried as everyone was the epitome of politeness and consideration, even mid-mosh. DJ Richie Hudson and I spent a happy 20 minutes reminiscing about our memories of punk’s heyday, until we worked out that according to the local press Richie wasn’t actually born at the time, whereupon he was forced to admit that he’d made the whole lot up. Thanks must go to Kat for all her hard work organising the event and to everyone who went for making it such a fun night. £1800 was raised for charity which makes it all the more special. Latest news is they’re planning another bash for next year – can’t wait for that. Other than that, it’s been a bit of a quiet month musically but The Brief have been continuing to provide quality rock nights where I have been enthusiastically swapping haircare tips with Godsized guitarist Tim O’Tey, sorry, Neil. His magnificent mane never ceases to amaze and is the envy of most of the girls (and boys for that matter) in the crowd. Don’t miss Godsized headlining at the Clapham Grand on 15th August along with, amongst others, the oddly named Todger. And finally, we mustn’t forget the Ship’s Battle of the Bands competition, which as I write, is warming up nicely (actually it was a little too warm on Tuesday). Once again, I’ve been getting under the judges’ (including your bonsai editor) feet, making bands do strange things with cans of beer and generally making a damn nuisance of myself. The quality of the bands is awesome – it makes me very glad that I live in Croydon (well something has to) and thankful too that we have the Ship to repair to at the end of a hard day’s work. There will be at least 450 beers available throughout the festival including golden ales, fruit beers, stouts, bitters and some international real lagers. As well as a great selection of beer there is also cider and perry, all available in pint, half pint and third pint measures. There's plenty to occupy you at the festival, you can play on some traditional pub games, enjoy the live music, sample some food including some good traditional pub snacks and also attend tutored beer tastings. The tutored tastings usually sell out in advance so please book these early to avoid disappointment. Smoking regulations: An outside smoking area will be available again this year at the rear of the beer hall. s I sit here and attempt to put into words the two day Rock Riot festival (5 + 6th July at the Edge) I can say without false modesty that these were the two finest shows we have ever put on. Following the success of our outdoor Shindig in 2007, we made a conscious decision to go one better for this summer and hold an event which would test the measures of our skill, patience and our abilities to book acts which crowds may never have heard - but would be at pains to forget. Thus what better idea than a two day music event with roughly 20 acts over two days? The Rock Riot ethos in the 3 years since I started the company has been simple 'One Crowd for One Gig'. This has served us well with crowds being consistently high throughout, and the satisfaction for promoter/band/punter; one of value for

money and a journey/night out in Croydon not wasted. From my own point of view (and I speak for my partners too) the formation of Rock Riot has expanded our horizons musically and socially. We have made some very fine friends from our shows and seen some of the best bands who undoubtedly have the talent to challenge any of the status quo in the music industry. If we were to stop tomorrow it would have been entirely worth it. As many of you who have been to a Rock Riot show will know that profit isn’t the motivating factor behind what we do and this will continue to be a part of what we have strived to create. While my task was to write a review of the festival (which is coming…) I felt it pertinent to just set the scene somewhat and perhaps from the tone you may have guessed that this

is something of a swansong for Rock Riot for the next few months at least. Without sounding too verbose I give you - Rock Riot's Annual Shindig! Following last years debacle with the rain in August and the near death experiences of playing in pouring rain while using electrical equipment which would have ousted the national grid, we opted to play it safe and hold the festival inside. The Edge in South Croydon has become Rock Riot HQ and the shows we have put on since December last year have been some the most enjoyable and well attended we have had. For this reason it was never a doubt that the festival would be held anywhere else. So after 8 weeks of planning, 2 days of preparation, 1 sofa being dropped on my foot, a few too many Stellas on a Saturday morning, a last minute flurry of cancellations and what must have been a ton of equipment from Scream we were ready... Whore! [Oooh, get you! - Ed] The opening band of the festival had debuted previously for us in May and we had

made the decision to have them take one of the remaining slots. Great bunch of guys. In fact Ed (bassist) was my boss recently so it's funny how things come full circle. As you are well aware Rock Riot enjoys its Punk (the disappearance of the Malloys being literally heartbreaking) and Whore! Filled the gap nicely. ‘Never been on Holiday’ tune of the set. Kitty Hudson: Croydon stalwarts Kitty Hudson had never graced a Rock Riot stage however thanks to Al drinking in the Edge and Rob's intervention - we were paired together. Simply awesome band live, great stage presence, and all round

career. My personal highlight of the set and the cd they kindly sent me is ‘The Trick’. Expect big things! The Stayaways: The Stayaways are one of my favourite bands - not one of my favourite Rock Riot bands - but one of my all time favourites. Whenever I see them live they make me realise two things: 1. How original and captivating indie music should and can be. 2. How incredulous it is that bands like Razorlight, Kooks etc can make a career out of essentially baby-talk lyrics. This band need very little written about them other than their myspace address

‘It’s always difficult to choose the best song from a Sunsets on Vegas set - much like choosing which of your kids you like best...’ cool bunch of guys. They had not played Croydon in a while I was told, and it was great to see so many fans out in force proving once again that Croydon is really pushing all the niche places in London for exciting and well supported acts The Flavonoids: We have had many new bands play for Rock Riot this year and the Flavonoids are among the best. There are very few women in bands, let alone entire female acts in Britain today and it's a real shame. The Flavs combine catchy indie with vocals reminiscent of Spektor, Nico and Brian Jonestown Massacre (when Anton's sister sings obviously). The Flavonoids have been together a very short space of time, and have only played a handful of shows. However I really believe that they could turn unbridled potential into a successful

www.myspace.com/thestayaways. Do yourself a favour and your ears justice and check them out - ‘Manna Factory’ the storming end to a hurricane set! Mescadets: Were you there in Warlingham 2007? It started to rain so heavily it looked like the weather would beat us and then… ‘Star Wars’?!? Pretty much saved the festival from disaster. Everyone forgot how wet they were and listened intently from the comfort of a crowded space. Mescadets have changed a lot since last year and while Star Wars breakdowns are no longer a feature, the band’s development has been outstanding. The last 6 months have been a transitional period with new members and fighting the good fight between gigs, rehearsal and the ever imposing spectre of exams and A-levels.

Songs such as ‘2X4’ still tear through a crowd, while reworkings of 'It doesn’t make us...’ and new song 'The Fairytale…' are showing a real sign of maturity and stage presence while belies their relatively young age. This is going to be a big summer for Mescadets. But judging on this performance they are another band from Croydon who will be challenging the best London has to offer very soon. The Brent Flood: Late additions to the festival and we managed to swap Littl'ans for the Independent Music Awards Best Indie Act Winners (as featured in last month’s Deep). Utterly brilliant band - fantastic songs, great personalities and it was easy to see why they had beaten so many bands to the award. I highly recommend you get to see the Brent Flood for yourself because if you leave it too late you could find ticket prices have gone from a fiver at the Barfly to £20 at the Academy! Sunsets on Vegas: We have a book at Rock Riot - in this book we have 3 colours when writing down bands. Red for new acts, blue for acts which play with us regularly, and, black for bands who, we would happily tell our friends to go see instead of our show. Sunsets on Vegas were the perfect headliners for the Saturday Night. In

front of a packed crowd, Jim, Sam and Harry tore through a flawless set which had people in raptures. SOV are a band who are written down in black and double underlined. THE band of the weekend hands down. After a few months away you may have thought it would take a song or two to get into their rhythm, not the case. It’s always difficult to choose the best song from a SOV set - much like choosing which of your kids you like best - but with a gun to my head I would say ‘Year of the Volunteer’. A flawless set. Sunday 6th July Day Two: I was phoned rather early Sunday morning to be informed that Caezium had arrived very early for the show; 8am early to be precise. My mind bent by drinking and lack of sleep envisioned finding 4 Scotsmen in kilts furious for leaving them on the door step of a pub, in Croydon, after an 11 hour drive from Edinburgh; with freedom and revenge running through their veins. As is Rock Riot tradition after a successful night we had decided to celebrate with vigour and over a prolonged period. However although our minds and bodies screamed ‘no leave me to die’ the incessant vibrating of a phone stirred us into action. Looking like everything that

the Daily Mail sees wrong in the youth of today and really only amounting to 30% effective we soldiered on… Sunday was a strongbow day I seem to remember. De'borah: Sundays have traditionally been a day of rest - hence we opted to have our acoustic acts perform on the Sunday. De'borah was our first and was a prime example of how good acoustic music can be. A really light set with songs that had a poise and character and maintained the audience interest throughout. Our acoustic shows have been sometimes hit and miss but De'borah was a real gem of a find! Credit to Amelia for booking her. Tabitha Benjamin: You know when people send you facebook messages with the title 'BOOK HER NOW' that there might be something good about an artist. Tabitha Benjamin was quality - a very Irish influence to her songs which were original, varied and extremely catchy. Shades of the Cranberries, The Carpenters and Beth Orton. Tabitha Benjamin should be gracing bigger London stages very soon.

Tim and Allen: Czagio were a great band, good bunch of guys and bought into the Rock Riot ethic with all the gusto of a fat kid in a cake shop. When we first started out we needed to find bands who wanted to build something up from ground level and to support everyone involved. Czagio did this and we owe a lot of our success and longevity to people who took this on board. It was great to have Tim and Allen performing at the festival and personally it would not have been a true Rock Riot event if they had not performed. Simon Lee: Billy Don't Be A Hero were another band who were there from the beginning - played numerous shows for us and were an instrumental factor in why our Selsdon shows were successful and thus pushed us onto bigger and better things. Simon is now performing solo - a much talked about reunion never happened - but his set was excellent. A few covers alongside new and old BDBAH tunes really set the mood for full band performances as we moved into the twilight of the festival Is Johnny High? By the time IJH? took to the stage we had got through 11 acts and honestly

we were flagging. Very little sleep, cancellations and the fear were taking control. IJH? Were the remedy to our ailments. This band hail from the Brit School and look set to follow in the large footsteps of previous students. Full of energy and song after song they seemed to get better and better. Set highlight was ‘Real Horror Show’. Los: Brand new band that were recommended to us by Davros of Chop Chop. Decent array of tunes and set which seemed a little too short however always leave people wanting more. Hopefully we’ll have them back soon. Chop Chop Bear Touch? These guys blow me away! In fact I like

strangely expecting some woeful Brazilian outfit with a cat suit - they got Chicago Street Sweepers. Lives were changed! Caezium: These guys played with the Tunics in Edinburgh the night before and travelled down to play with them in Croydon. One of the best up and coming acts I have heard. The infusion of Hendrixesque guitar and Kasabian beats is electrifying and we shall certainly be having these guys back. The Tunics: Last year The Tunics came to the festival in the middle of their album, this year it was in the middle of their tour. Having played Glasgow and Edinburgh the previous two days they drove through

I have to say that I was hot and I didn’t hear much through the bear head, but what I do know is that they rocked and ‘I Own the Floor’ nearly burst all the windows in The Edge. Chicago Street Sweepers: What a band! Punk music at it's best. If you want music without pretension, without arrogance and music that needs to rest simply on the tunes CSS is YOUR band. We had stupidly used abbreviations when advertising some bands - SOV and CSS. Some arrived

the night to make Guilfest and then to The Edge to perform. Despite the sleep deprivation of touring The Tunics played an awesome set and ‘Fade Out’ was outstanding. General Paulus: So at 10.30 we were at the finish line and it was apt that General Paulus were the band to bring the show to a halt. Last year it was solo, this year there was an ex tunic/czagio in the shape of Joe Flynn on the guitar and Craig Foster our soundman who had worked so diligently and hard all weekend. General Paulus used to be the acoustic artist that

everyone wished had a band. Now they do and the noise is incredible. ‘Give us a Kill’ and ‘Werewolf’ were like bombs going off. The best way to cap off a superb weekend. I haven’t written anything this long since my dissertation and will try to keep our thanks to a minimum - however I will endeavour not to leave anyone out. We would like to thank Rob and Amelia at The Edge without whose support and backing such an undertaking would not be possible. They gave us the freedom to run our show as we wanted and I feel everyone has been the beneficiary. Very few people left like this in the world that are prepared to take a risk! The staff at the edge - Gail, Kaye + Neil who worked really hard throughout and made it what it was, Craig Foster for his expertise in the field of sound engineering. Of course, if you’re reading this on any of those now then you’ll know about this already, and this paragraph has probably created a spacial paradox which is even as we speak destroying the universe. Which is nice.... Elsewhere we bid fond farewell to Bar R in South End, where we’ve had many a good night out, and welcome in its stead something called the txt bar. I gather from various conversations that there is a concept behind this, but as it hasn’t opened (as of time of writing), we are not entirely sure what that concept is. As usual, we will endeavour to find out and will keep you posted. Congratulations this month, as mentioned elsewhere by Auntie May I believe, to Punkstock at the Walkabout. The all-day punk-a-thon with GBH, amongst others, managed to raise on a single Sunday a whopping £1800 for its

two charities, Marie Curie Cancer Care and the Parkinson’s Disease Society. Top effort, and well done to everyone who got down and dirty in the moshpit to support them. In ‘friends of deep’ news, word hits us this month of a concert by Bill Bailey ‘Bill Bailey's Remarkable Guide to the Orchestra’. Mr B ‘will be performing his latest show, featuring a 72 piece symphony orchestra, at the Royal Albert Hall, London on October 15th and 16th 2008.’ At present tickets are only available to those registered on his website (www.billbailey.co.uk) although they will go on public sale later on. Check the website for more details. We’re thinking of adding a separate ‘Jessica Hynes News’ section, such is the prolificacy of her output at the moment. Last month we told you about her new film, Faintheart, and this month we bring news of her appearance in a play, which we thought was quite apt, all things considered. Jess will be appearing at The Old Vic in ‘Alan Ayckbourn's comic masterpieces, The Norman Conquests (on the London stage for the first time in 34 years). Matthew Warchus (Speedthe-Plow, God of Carnage, The Lord of the Rings) directs an outstanding ensemble cast: Amelia Bullmore, Jessica Hynes, Stephen Mangan, Ben Miles, Paul Ritter and Amanda Root. Especially

for this production The Old Vic auditorium will be transformed into 'The CQS Space' to recreate the intimate 'theatre-in-the-round' experience that the plays were originally written for. ‘The interconnecting triptych of plays, Round and Round the Garden, Table Manners and Living Together follow the same six characters, Norman, his in-laws and the local vet over a summer weekend, in an English Country house.’ The plays run from 11th September to 20th December 2008. As you’d expect there are a varity of ticket options ranging from £10 - £45 for a single play and all the way up to £180 for one of the ‘trilogy days’ with all three plays. Played some nice open air gigs in Sicily with a beautiful mountain range in the background and an audience that made you realise what a bunch of scruffs us Brits are. Reading Festival was great too. Lots of people dancing about and having a good time 4) And the worst? Any gig in the bowels of the earth in summer or supporting a big name band when you have to start your set before they've actually opened the doors to let people in. 5) Best gig you're ever been to as a punter? Please note that this list only applies to colours of cars and not vans. At this present moment I cannot see any vans outside anyway. I should point out though that a really fat woman the size of a bus is going slowly past and she is wearing black, which in theory is a slimming colour but clearly not on her. Libra Sep 23-Oct 22 Returning to an old theme of promoting fairly random festivals this month we have Topless Auto Tour, with plenty of “running around topless” promised to be held in Madison, Wisconsin. All looks good on paper yeah boys, but before you book your flights and make sure the camera is working, check the small print. This isn’t actually ahem, women, running around topless, it’s the damn cars. Yes, 200 hundred of the things, with their “tops” off all tuned in to some classic radio station and just driving about aimlessly. Deeply, deeply disappointing. Never fear though, because just a short step away in Ohio this August will be ”Twins” days, where a load of people sit around and watch DeVito and Schwartzwhatever give a masterful display of acting… nope, hang on I’ve got that wrong. Basically a load of twins get together and talk about um, how they look alike or something. Freaks. Aries Mar 21-Apr 20 For quite a number of years now I’ve been mildly obsessed with hair. In fact in these very pages I’ve mentioned that I suffer from that hair-pulling thing – trichotillomania. I would now like to reveal how I think this came about. I don’t know who to call in the middle of the night anymore; I’m just alone with these thoughts. It’s Morrissey and that quiff. For as long as I can remember I’ve wanted to have such a barnet but my particular density and bent of hair doesn’t really allow it to happen, curly you see. Now before you look at my picture and say that I don’t have curly hair, I can assure you, in the place where the quiff of genius would have to occur, it’s marginally curly enough to render it impossible. I have shed tears over this I can tell you and even considered using straighteners. Oh woe.

Cancer Jun 22-Jul 22 Did you know that a “jiffy” is an actual measurement of time? Me neither; until I was stuck for something to write for this star sign and typed the words “fascinating facts” into the toolbar. Whereupon I came across the aforementioned fact, submitted by a gentleman (I presume) called Craig, from Essex. According to him a jiffy is 1/100th of a second. Now if you know Craig and he’s just winding us all up then please do chastise him. If however he is right then don’t tell him otherwise he might try and claim some kind of royalties or something. Some bloke had told me they had one I could take out y’see. Turns out they had literally (see what I did there?) hundreds of thousands of books in this place. So far I’ve read something like 2 books so hopefully if any of these star signs are going to be about igloo’s (or is it igli, I wonder if they have a dictionary in here?) or 18th Century poetry then we’re sorted.
