deep online at: www.deep-london.co.uk • www.issuu.com • www.facebook.com/deeplondon • twitter @deep_london Hello there.. ...and welcome to issue 95, our bumper December / January double whammy issue, which was going to be half upside down, but to be honest that’s a massive pain in the arse, so it’s all the same way up, it’s just bigger than usual. And more festive. And New Year-y. We were also going to do a festive version of ‘CroydonHello’ but we just didn’t have the time. It may well reappear next year though, so that’ll be nice. Anyway, what we have got for you this month is not one cover star, but a mag full of stars, from your festive telly guide to some truly magnificent heroes of post-riot fundraising, the late great Kirsty MacColl, some major humbugging from Auntie May, a Christmas Ghost Story from Mr Nick, Banned Sauce - twice (they get around, that lot), pictures of the year, our regular film guide and a look ahead to some notable things occurring next year. Not bad, we thought. We’ve also, and don’t all fall over at once, actually arranged a Christmas Party! Well, I say organised, we’re sort of piggy-backing on Junk Time Party’s festive shindig, but as they’re friends of the mag, and we’re on the same wavelength, party-wise, we thought we’d make it a joint do. The ‘Cockney Rock Superstars’ will be providing two sets of their fantastic tunes, there will be some DJs and whatnot (including a rare appearance behind the decks by JTP’s Andy P), and plenty of stuff from us, so come on down to The Oval Tav on Thursday 29th of December and help us celebrate another year of getting this mag out, against all the odds and most people’s financial advice. All we’d suggest is that if you are unlucky enough to be working that week, maybe take Friday off to recover. Hurrah! On a completely different bent, I was, when thinking about this editorial, planning to have a bit of a rant about the last year, with arts cuts and riots and all that old rubbish, but I’m actually feeling quite festive now and looking forward to the party, so I won’t, and instead may break out the eggnog and get royally whiffled, as P.G. Wodehouse would say. Finally, before I’m unable to see, and just before we leave you for until February, congratulations to Sue Emmett who won December’s ‘Where’s Groove’ by spotting our little Hoob friend, wedged somewhat unceremoniously and upside down with his little legs in the air, behind the bar of The Two Brewers. We’ll be presenting Sue with her fabulous (possibly) prize at The Brewers Carol Concert Night on the 15th December, so we’ll have pictures of that (and Groove behind the bar, for proof!) in the next issue. And that’s it, we hope you enjoy this issue have a lovely Christmas, a merry New Year and a peaceful January - we’ll see you again in February. Until then, avanti, allons-y, cheers! With bells on. Your Bonsai Editor - You still have time to buy Angela xxx me this car for Xmas, by the way...

...Erm, because it’s cold out there and I’m full of egg-nog. (The headline above, incidentally, will be vaguely hilarious to anyone over 30...). It’s the Deep-London festive star-filled telly highlights page!

I

t’s Christmas, traditionally a time for vegging out in front of the telly while the various channels throw repeats, specials and one-off big production numbers at you in equal measure, so here’s our brief guide to whaat we consider to be some of the highlights... Felix and Murdo (Channel 4 - date tbc) A one off, half hour, Christmas studio sitcom, written by Simon Nye, Felix and Murdo is set in Edwardian London of 1908 - the year the Olympics first came to London. Murdo (Alexander Armstrong) and Felix (Ben Miller) are ‘modern' men and best friends who indulge in a drink and drugs spree while simultaneously competing in the Olympics... with no training whatsoever. Armstrong and Miller say; ‘Hopefully the time is ripe for an Edwardian sitcom featuring excessive drug-taking, monkey twins, and competitive javelin. And if it isn't, then we had a bloody good time making this show anyway.' The same evening features a ‘best of' selection of the pair's eponymous sketches taken from their last series seen on Channel 4. Doctor Who (BBC1 Xmas Day 7pm) Always a festive treat, this year again I’ll have to obtain special dispensation from the Ferrara household’s ‘no telly on Xmas day’ rule to watch it, but I reckon I’ll get away with is as this year’s special features friend of the mag Bill Bailey! Hurrah! We remember talking to him

ages ago about him wanting to be in it, so we’re pleased it’s come off. Bill says, "It's the equivalent of a knighthood. I've watched Doctor Who for as long as I can remember. My earliest memory of watching TV is hiding behind the sofa from the Cybermen. I had an irrational fear of leaving doors open for years after that.". Don’t miss it. The Cube Celebrity Special (ITV Xmas Eve - 6.30pm) I love The Cube. Don’t care that I don’t know who the celebrities are, I shall be watching! The Borrowers (BBC - date tbc) A new adaptation starring Stephen Fry, Victoria Wood, Christopher Eccleston, Sharon Horgan, Robert Sheehan and Aisling Loftus. Christopher Ecclestone says, “The Borrowers is one of the very first books I remember reading as a child, and I loved it. I would have read it around 1971 or 1972 I think at the primary school I went to. They formed a little book club and gave us a magazine where you had to choose your own book. The Borrowers was the first book I bought and I can picture seeing the brochure now, seeing the graphics on the front of The Borrowers novel - I went for that first and read the book two or three times. As a child if I liked a book I tended to keep reading it. The film is a contemporary take on the story and still retains all the original elements of the book, which is really about a

loving family - a dad learning how to let go of his daughter so that she’ll come back.” Great Expectations (BBC - date tbc) Starring Ray Winstone, Gillian Anderson, David Suchet and Douglas Booth. Ray says, “Christmas without a BBC show or drama is not really Christmas is it. You have enough to drink and eat and then you sit down by the fire and watch a good drama, and there's nothing better than Dickens at Christmas. “I remember the film came out with Sir John Mills and Sir Alec Guinness it kind of stuck in my mind, especially the sequence at the beginning in the graveyard - it scared me. It was the kind of image that stuck with me all of my life really. It was the character in the film actually, the old boy who played him, the fear you have as a kid, someone coming out of the dark, the kind of thing you have nightmares about, "As I got older, I began to realise what the film was all about, it is such great writing. The fact that it's about where we come from, the inverted snobbery of people from other worlds, and what love is, and how love can be so cold. There's a hell of a lot going on in it. Maybe as a kid you don't understand, but you get it when you get older." Michael Buble - Home For Christmas (ITV - 18th Dec 9pm) A festive special from Croydon’s very own Micky Bubbles. Not my cup of tea but if our erstwhile astronomer is reading this - set your video Mike... Absolutely Fabulous (BBC date tbc Three new episodes with the enture original cast. And finally - The Deep-London Christmas Film probability predictor: We have no idea if any of these are actually on, but the probablities are: The Sound of Music - 99% Chitty Chitty Bang Bang - 80% Mary Poppins - 89% The Great Escape - 78% Any Bond Film - 100% The Snowman - 75% Life of Brian - 0% 4

It’s Christmas! So here are a couple of pages to make you feel all ‘goodwill to all men’ - like...

U

nless you’ve been living under a rock, you may recall back in August we had a bit of trouble in sunny Croydon, with a load of scrotes rampaging through the town nicking stuff and setting things on fire (don’t get me started on the little gits), and every right minded person in town was rightly rather narked at the whole thing. The days that followed, however, when the TV cameras had buggered off, saw a rather more pleasing side to the Cronx, with hoards of people broomedup (Size Nine’s Joe was brandishing a particularly fine ‘broom of justice’ when we met him in the Dragon the following day for a well deserved pint or three) clearing up the mess, churches opening and supplying hot drinks for families who’d lost their homes, people donating clothes, furniture and money and

everyone rather getting behind this soggy old town to try to help. It was quite nice actually. But I digress - while certain parties in town determined to form a committee and use the situation to further their own ends (you know who you are, and if anyone wants to know who they are, e-mail me and I’ll tell you), other parties decided to get off their arses and actually DO something. Here, we’re happy to celebrate two of those parties, whose parties involved many other parties, and who had, well, a couple of right old parties, and managed to raise, between them, around £2,600 from you lovely readers to help those affected. We’ll start with Mat Martin (purely because that event was first) who managed to get 6 bands, 3 DJs, a bonsai editor and a couple of hundred music-

lovers out of the centre of Croydon to the wilds of South Norwood Sports Arena for an all day music-marathon, and a fine time was had by all, except for me, who was on the door trying to attach wristbands and flog raffle tickets while some inconsiderate band or six insisted on making a bloody racket behind me. Actually, that’s not true, I had an absolute blast, as did everyone else who attended. At the end of a very boozy and hugely fun day, with an atmosphere quite unlike anything I’ve personally ever experienced at a gig before, thanks to the efforts of Mat, Junk Time Party, The 23 Enigma, Kitty Hudson, Banned Sauce, Miss Nicaragua, Boot Led Zeppelin, DJs Fashion Andy and Elmo and Geoff’s Muppet Show, Dec, Chris and all the helpers, the Croydon FC bar-staff, not to mention

Pictures: This page - Elvis suit at The Glam (no idea), Banned Sauce’s D, the Tubbster taking snaps. Next page (in no particular order) Darno and The Brothers of Mother Shovel at The Glamorgan, Croydon All-Stars Junk Time Party, The 23 Enigma, Kitty Hudson, Banned Sauce, Boot- Led Zeppelin, revellers, Chris reads the mag (I’ll give you that fiver later...). Last page: Fun in the Glam garden, atmospheric shovel, the Glam lovely bar staff, Mat presents the cheque to the mayor, Mat, Di and Geoff. Thanks to Mik Tubb and DarkZac @ inphotopia.com 6

everyone who donated raffle prizes, the ‘Croydon All-Stars Charity Gig’ for that was its name, had raised around £1,250 for the Mayor’s ‘Croydon’s Recovery’ fund. A HUGE thank you to everyone involved, you did the Cronx proud. As mentioned a couple of months ago, we were going to run this article in October’s issue, but we had one last thing to do. That thing was to get Mat and the Mayor of Croydon in the same room so that the former could present the cheque to the latter, and we achieved this a couple of weeks ago, wherein the Mayor too asked us to thanks everyone involved, so that’s nice. Croydon All-Stars bands, contributors and punters - we salute you! On to the second party, and I’m sure anyone who lives in the East area of Croydon can’t have helped but be completely shocked and disgusted at the looters treatment of Roy’s little TV shop

on Cherry Orchard Road, which was systematically raided over a period of five hours, and left completely empty (as I believe I mentioned at the time - the clue’s in the name TV Repair Shop, so we hope you nasty little thieving gits are happy with your non-working tellys. Idiots.) I do happen to live in East Croydon, as does Oscar Dahling, owner of the antique shop a few doors between Roy’s shop and The Glamorgan pub, who, like Mat, got off his arse and organised a benefit gig and event, at the pub, for the shop. Under the auspices Residents for Regeneration the gig was to raise funds and show moral support to Roy, to help him get back on his feet and to remind him that the local community cares. A huge turnout for the event, with Roy as guest of honour, managed to raise over £1,400, and Grant, owner of The Glamorgan, asked me to pass on

8

his personal thanks to Oscar, The Brothers of Muva Shovel and guitarist Darno who provided the fantastic entertainment, and to every one of you who came out to support the event. Residents for Regeneration and all involved in a great night with, again, an atmosphere like no other - we salute you too! But that’s enough of my wittering, if you were at either of these events you’ll know how fantastic they were, and how valuable in getting a bit of a smile back on people’s faces after what was, let’s face it, a pretty grim situation, and if you weren’t at the events, why not? Anyway, for everyone, whether there or not, here are a load of pictures form both events so you can either see what you missed out on, son, or relive those warm, fluffy, and most probably slightly fuzzy, memories. Croydon folk - we love you all (except for ‘rioters’).

ow what an amazing weekend - the Farmers just keeps going from strength to strength. This was the 3rd Annual Music Marathon - 24 hours of non-stop live music in aid of Cancer Research and local charities, held on 12th /13th November and organised by Ian Harris, the Farmers’ owner of the last six years, in conjunction with Purley festival. If you missed it this year make sure you hit it next (if the thought of 24 hour drinking scares you, a fine English breakfast for the early starters and a Sunday lunch, priced right and lacking for nothing, is available!) A warm pub in the heart of Purley, Ian’s made the Farmers a mecca for artists young and old alike to perform their craft in an environment free from the norms of modern British pub culture. The event promised a mixture of open mic, live bands, Irish, blues, accordion playing and solo performances, and on walking in I felt immediately at ease, but with that buzz of excitement at what was to come. I kicked off the weekend on the Friday night with Banned Sauce (& their open mic night) and returned on Sunday to watch The Saviours - both times the pub was alive with the crack and bubble of performers and patrons, a warmly lit bar, the sweet smell of beer and the small stage almost overflowing into the crowd around it - a mixture of locals and travellers, different peoples from different worlds together through a love of music. To be able to walk into a pub and chat to others as if you’ve known them for years isn’t easy to achieve, but this had it in spades. Banned Sauce were, as always, a highlight and had the place shaking to the core with an old school vibe of Peter Green and a modern twist of soul and jazz. Simon Randall did a great solo slot and Rob Cushman’s guitar playing is something to be seen and heard - a true artist with the kind of performance that makes you realise just what the guitar can do. I Walked into the farmers not knowing what to expect and walked out with a new home from home - a good place to chill out, meet others or relax at the bar, somewhere to escape to & most of all, enjoy a huge variety of music. It’s nice to find a little peace in an insane world...

ello again, and Season's Greetings to you all. Well, I suppose I have to accept the inevitable - the dreaded C-word is just around the corner and we must shake the mothballs out of our slender purses and set about purchasing a raft of things that nobody really wants and sending cards to people we'll probably never see again. Don't get me wrong, I can do Christmas along with the best of them, but I've decided this year that keeping the Royal Mail solvent is not my responsibility. I have a theory that if you don't send a card to somebody you usually do send one to, they probably won't realise, so on that basis everybody will assume I've sent it as usual. I've also decided to spend less

by next year unless somebody at Cadbury/Kraft realises the error of their ways. The next question is when exactly to put up the tree. Too soon and you're bored with it by mid-December and all the chocolate coins and candy canes have long gone (and the sound of Edith furtively crunching underneath the covers keeps me awake), but if you're anything like me and you leave it too late, you start thinking it's hardly worth all the effort of dragging the damn thing out of the loft when you know it'll have to be packed away again within a week or so. Still once it's up and the presents are heaped up underneath ready to be squeezed and shaken on a daily basis I really feel

“The dreaded C-word is here - time to shake the mothballs from our slender purses to purchase a raft of things nobody really wants. . . money and more thought on the presents I buy, so hopefully I'll be able to afford to eat in the New Year. Edith's getting a Starship Enterprise Pizza Cutter (who wouldn't want one of those?), Bert's in line for a "Design a Beaver" Magnetic Picture, my lovely grand-daughter is set to receive some irresistible bacon flavoured lip-balm and my grandson, Jonny Carnage, is sure to be delighted with his handy Countdown to the End of the World Timer. Yes folks, they're all bone fide gifts, available on the internet should you be tempted to treat your loved ones this Christmas. Having got the presents sorted, my next problem was that Cadbury's have been taken over by Kraft. Not that that in itself is a major concern of mine, except that due to a discontinuance catastrophe it is now almost impossible to find the little Cadbury's Miniatures which I pop into my lovely home-made advent calendars (a novel use for a pile of matchboxes and some gaffer tape). I finally managed to source some on-line (albeit with a rather short sell-by date) but I fear the crisis will have deepened

Christmas has got underway. Edith's got a lovely set of reindeer antlers designed to be put on a car (yes really) but because she hasn't got a car she simply takes them along with her whenever she goes out and insists on attaching them to the taxi for the duration of her journey, much to the

irritation of the local cab drivers. Then there's the food issue. All that expense on buying heaps of stuff you wouldn't normally buy and then you go and spend most of your time at someone else's house. I have a cunning plan this year to buy a box of mince pies, a pint of milk, a loaf of bread and of course a bottle of Baileys for emergencies. I can always eat the candy canes if I get desperate. That sorted, all that remains is to decide on a fancy dress costume for Christmas Eve in the Ship and sit and sip sherry until the time comes to put it on and commence the revelries. Then I usually sit and watch rubbish television in a haze of mince pies, strange-drinksbrought-back-from-abroad-whichneed-finishing and cold turkey until it's time to start the New Year revelries and find yet another fancy dress costume. It's a hard life in Auntiemayland. So have a wonderful time, see the people you love, get wherever you're going safely and look forward to the start of 2012. Auntie May returns next year...

The Star Trek Pizza Cutter, fuzzily going into warp drive, by the look of it. Now THAT is a quality piece of tat! 12

A Lost Croydon Pubs Christmas Ghost Story Special, by Nick Booth, illustration by Barwick Green From Surrey Pubs (Chatto and Windus, 1939): ‘The Black Horse, near The Rose & Crown, Croydon, opposite the Parish Church. Built 1840, extended 1872. Corner entrance, decorative lintel, Victorian bar and ironwork, stabling at rear, carriage entrance extant. A rather nice example of the type.’

O

NE EVENING IN THE LATER PART OF THE 1990s a friend of mine, Smith, found himself at the bar in The Ship. He was not a Croydon face, so to speak, but was often seen on account of his hobby, a pastime he claimed to have invented: pubology. Wags said it was pronounced pube-ology and was nothing more than the examination and collection of nether hair, but Smith rose above that, going so far as to announce himself a pub-ologist. Of course, all it really meant was that he enjoyed the history, features and terminology of the English public house, from the heraldry of signboards to rare bar styles and obscure brickwork facings. Nothing escaped his connoisseur’s eye. He particularly liked finding out-of-theway pubs with some little historical appurtenance lurking. So it was a happy coincidence that on this particular evening, when the conversation had veered off rock and roll matters, such as what the best Stooges record was and why Aerial Bender of Mott the Hoople wore that silly cap right on the side of his head, it got on to pubs. One of Smith’s cronies, a ponytailed crusty, name of Gaz, was bemoaning the fact that he and friends could not go away for the weekend to a pop festival. When asked why, Gaz said: ‘It ain’t money: We’re squatting innit. Can’t leave the property unattended –

might end up losing the place to, like, er, squatters.’ When asked where he was squatting Gaz said: ‘That pub round old town, by the church. No, not the Rose and Crown, the next one along.’ ‘The Black Horse,’ said Smith. ‘That’s it. We ain’t been there long and we’re aiming to spend the winter there so we don’t want any scrotes barging in.’ Smith quickly saw an opportunity to indulge his hobby. Before long an arrangement had been achieved. Gaz and his fellow squatters would leave the Black Horse under Smith’s charge for a few days. The pubologist’s imagination was piqued by the idea. He had no moral objection to squatting, had in fact never given it any thought. All his attention was focused on making an in-depth study of a historic public house, to do nothing less than expand the theory and practice of pubology. ‘Here’s the key to the back door,’ said Gaz in a low cider-and-roll-ups voice a few days later. ‘The front door ain’t got a key or if it has I don’t know about it. It’s well barricaded in any case. The only way in and out that ain’t barricaded is the first floor back entry, up a flight o’ metal steps. You wanna watch them if you’ve been drinking, I’ve taken a tumble a couple of times.’ Smith was barely listening. They stood opposite the Black Horse and he was entranced. The pub had 14

been shut and empty for several years. It was of course sad to see a pub closed (though it was often said it would open again one day), but Smith the specialist was in control: his eyes ranged over the exterior. The woodwork was painted black and the long unattended brasswork had lost its lustre. Set against the ancient oak tree in the yard and the cold, still and misty day, the effect was positively funereal. ‘It’s nice and quiet down here, well off the main drag,’ said Gaz. ‘But keep the noise down and always use a low light.’ He dropped the key into Smith’s hand. ‘Make sure you give the door a good shove shut. I’d like to show you round but we gotta get. See you Monday.’ With that Gaz jumped into an old van packed with fellow squatters, and off they went, with an ugly wrench of the gearbox. Smith made his entrance through the fog-hung yard (giving the back door a good shove shut). Gaz and his girlfriend appeared to have colonised the master bedroom and the four others had made living quarters in and around the upstairs function room. The floors were a wasteland of rucksacks, beer cans and fast food containers. Before Gaz’s time, various colonies of tramps had passed through, leaving a quintessence of urine about the place and blackened areas of wood and carpet, the remains of many small fires. It seemed sound enough

though. Smith dropped his sleeping bag and rucksack (it made a clink: Smith had brought booze) in the function room. He made a quick survey of the landing, rubbed his hand wonderingly across the faded wallpaper, with its grimy outlines of vanished pictures, before going downstairs. There was a special magic for Smith in entering the bar, even though it was gloomy, with the heavy old curtains pulled and everything covered in dust. It was a large room, with a grapevine cornice (rare, as Smith could tell you, in this part of Surrey) and dominated by the ornate Victorian bar, still a dignified presence despite the general dilapidation. Bar stools lay on their sides among bent tin ashtrays. A few dusty beer bottles stood on the counter. There were squares of grime on the walls where pictures had been removed. The saloon and public bars had been knocked through in the modernising period of the 70s, Smith knew from his trainspotterish

browsing of obscure local history pamphlets. Quite carried away with his chance to roam unrestricted, Smith sat in various places, imagining the pub in its heyday. He went behind the bar came across a reasonably sturdy-looking stool and perched on it. Gaz was right, it was a quiet backwater of the town, which was why the Black Horse probably failed to attract customers as the taste in pubs changed. After a while the silence became more penetrating and the gloom outside deepened. It was time for a drink. He went upstairs into the function room and got a can of beer from his rucksack. The streetlamps had just come on and were in their preparatory pink stage and glowing in the mist. Smith switched a couple of battery lights on and drank down his beer. It was at this point that Smith heard a peculiar sort of scraping or shuffling noise coming from downstairs. He went down the stairs with an

15

idea that Gaz had come back. However, he couldn’t find anyone. Smith decided to have a look around the area behind the bar. Upon examination he found, to his delight, that a pleasing architectural detail had survived the wrecking ball of the pub modernisers: the door to the snug. Sandblasted glass with an etched design of a horse. This cheered Smith up no end. He entered and the door closed slowly behind him. The snug was a small room with an old iron fireplace and a serving hatch to the main bar. It still had an old bench and table and a trapdoor in the floor. By a miracle the snug even had a mirror and no one had smashed it. It was while looking at the mirror he noticed someone or something outside the door. He could not see who or what it was because of the opaque glass but it was very dark. If it was a person they appeared to have some sort of mask on. Suddenly Smith understood. He leapt forward to the door and flung it open. ‘All right, Gaz, joke’s over!’ But Gaz wasn’t there. There was

he reasoned in his beery fug: what’s a ghost if not heritage? But he admitted to himself that he wasn’t looking forward to spending the night in the Black Horse. However, he was determined to keep his side of the bargain with Gaz. He went downstairs with a bottle of rum and his camping light and set himself up at the bar. It was hard not to say it was eerie in the cavernous gloom of the saloon underneath the imperious old bar. Smith poured himself a large one and knocked it back. That was better. How many drinkers had supped here, he wondered. It was beyond thought really. He took out a small radio and switched it on. Voices emerged, giving comfort. After an hour of this he was almost merry among the dingy cobwebs. He watched a spider climb the side of the rum bottle. Then he heard the scraping, shuffling noise again. It came from the back of the bar, the area of the snug. Smith’s uplifted mood was shattered immediately. He picked the light up and walked round slowly, entering the black corridor beside the bar. There was something, or someone, halfway down it. Something jet black and just outside the reach of the lamplight. Smith felt icy fear, but he still had a confused idea it might be one of the squatters. Until the figure made a noise. It was a hiss but not like that of any human or animal Smith knew about. The thing moved down the corridor away from Smith at lightning speed. It appeared to have gone in the snug because door ‘Breathing hard and shaking, Smith knew he would slammed shut. have to charge up the stairs...'

however a strange and rather horrible smell. A damp, musty aroma with something else in it that was hard to describe, almost like tar. Smith suddenly felt distinctly chilly. He noticed his hands were shaking slightly. He went back upstairs and drank another beer, rather guzzling this one. An hour or two passed. The light outside was failing. Smith had rolled down his sleeping bag and was lying on it, trying to convince himself that he was having a good time expanding the theory and practice of pubology. He started to doze and eventually fell into a short nap and had a dream in which he felt he was being watched. When Smith woke with a start he found he was shivering. His watch had stopped. His original, and he now realised rather foolish, plan was to spend the evening in the bar having a few drinks, a sort of send-off for the old place. Eventually, after two more beers, he decided he would do just that. So what if it was a ghost, he thought. Pubs should have ghosts,

16

From inside came the sound of something or someone thrashing around desperately and, worse than that in the effect it had on Smith, a horrible kind of high-pitched wheezy muttering. A chair was thrown against a wall. Smith dropped his light in fright and it went out as it hit the floor. Now he was in total darkness and frozen to the spot. The door of the snug opened and something came out and passed close by Smith. He felt it brush his face in the darkness. It was like dried wood, claw-like, smelling somehow of both earth and cinders. He lunged down for his light but couldn’t find it. He ran his hands across the floor, blindly groping. Meanwhile the creature seemed very near. He heard the hiss again. Suddenly Smith’s hand came upon the light and with difficulty (his hands were shaking violently) he switched it on. It didn’t work. He shook it and the light came on. There was an old coat hanging on the wall very near him. He hadn’t noticed it before. Was this what had ‘passed him’? If so, what was causing the noise in the snug. Smith relaxed slightly. There would be an explanation for this. He just didn’t believe in ghosts. However, that strange smell was back with a vengeance. Probably drains, Smith thought. And the noise in the snug? A drunken old tramp for sure, he told himself. Nevertheless, he was getting out. He decided to tell Gaz that sorry and all that, but sharing the place with some old meths drinkers was never part of the arrangement. He decided to go up and get his rucksack. It was when Smith took the first few steps up the stairs that he looked up and there, in the gloom at the top, stood a hideous figure in black rags. It had no face. Two horribly gnarled and blackened hands emerged from the sleeves of the rags. Even though it had no eyes it appeared to be staring right at Smith. Smith screamed. He ran through

into the bar but realised all exits were barricaded. To escape he would have to tackle the stairs again. He stood, breathing hard. From the hallway he could hear the thrashing and the muttering resume. He cried out in fright and somehow summoned the energy to try to charge the stairs. When Smith ran into the corridor the figure had vanished from the staircase and with relief Smith shot up the steps and ran to the back door. He could see it. Just a few more steps and he’d be out. In a minute he’d be in the high street, then he’d have a drink. Yes, he thought, a big drink… Smith grasped the handle and pulled, but it would not budge. He pulled again, hard. Just as the door began to move a great force landed on him from behind and he felt himself being dragged back down the stairs by sharp and incredibly powerful limbs. He screamed and wailed and thrashed in the darkness. The creature was pulling him down the corridor, through the snug door towards the trapdoor,

which was slowly rising seemingly of its own accord and emitting an unearthly light from below. The horrible smell was now overwhelming. A livid, vile hand was emerging from the trap. As Smith was propelled towards the trapdoor he emitted one last horrified scream. Smith never told me what he saw in that cellar; in fact he never told anyone. The next time I saw him was at Warlingham Park Mental Hospital. When he was found by Gaz on the return of the squatters, his state was that known popularly as ‘a gibbering wreck’. The psychiatrists found him a bit of a challenge. It was clear that he was not the man he was. I sought out a more detailed history of the Black Horse. It was with a small shiver that I read this extract from Frobisher’s County Histories: Surrey edition (1898) one afternoon in the library: ‘THE Black Horse at Croydon stands on the site of a much earlier inn, which in the latter part of the 17th century was sometimes used

18

as a temporary prison for the assizes. Certain parts of the original alehouse form part of the new building. It was here that a notorious highwayman and reputed practitioner of witchcraft was sentenced to death along with sundry other ‘murderous convicts’. An account from the time reports: ‘Upon receiving sentence of death, the highwayman did give violent struggle and was pulled to the gaol beneath the tavern in a state of great lamentation while heaping curses on all present. He did give the authorities so much resistance on the day of his execution that instead of being hanged he was placed in a barrel of pitch in the yard of the inn and burned alive.’ I wasn’t too down in the mouth when the pub caught fire in mysterious circumstances some months later and was destroyed. I never heard Smith speak about pubology again.

Our occasional light shining strand this month reprints an article written in December 2003 by Mike Walker on one our very, very finest - Kirsty MacColl

F

or me, like most of you I'm sure, Christmas isn't actually about religion, getting presents, or seeing family, it's about the endless after (and in) work hours spent in the pub drinking heavily and having an excuse when you get home late, reeking of a beer flavoured kebab, with a side salad of vomit. The same thing will probably happen again this year. At some stage I'll be slumped in the corner of the pub moaning incomprehensibly about the paucity of seasonal jukebox hits, wondering whether it's too late for me to add "a new liver" to my Christmas wish list. Christmas is pretty crap for music. Need I mention Slade, Mistletoe and Wine, any novelty record a la Bob the Builder, or god forbid Last Christmas by Wham anyone? There is however one song which seems to signify for me that the festive season is upon us, and it's the one song that no matter what mood I'm in will always put a smile on my face. All those crap compilations that end up as last minute panic presents, proclaiming to be "The Best of blah blah", need look no further for the Christmas edition than Croydon's finest singersongwriter, Kirsty MacColl. I am of course referring to her November 1987 release, "Fairytale of New York", with the infamous Pogues singer Shane MacGowan. Kirsty MacColl was born in Mayday Hospital in October 1959 to her choreographer mother Jean and celebrated folk performer Ewan ("First time I ever saw your face"), and was once described by U2 lead singer Bono as "the Noel Coward of her generation." She went to Monks Hill Comprehensive (now Selsdon High), and attended art school, being brought up by her mother in

Selsdon following her parent's break-up. Surely one of the most underrated (by the public) and underexposed songwriters of her time, MacColl signed her fist record deal with Stiff Records aged just 16, and her first single "They Don't Know" was released in June 1979. Although unsuccessful (it later became a number 2 hit for Tracy Ullman), MacColl persisted with her witty pop harmonies, earning a top 20 hit in May 1981, intriguingly entitled "There's a Guy Works Down the Chip Shop Swears he's Elvis." Again however, further releases failed to trouble the ears of the mass market, until December 1984, when her version of "A New England" by the Bard of Barking, Mr Billy Bragg,

reached no 7 in the charts. Having met a producer, Steve Lillywhite, at a Simple Minds session the year before, Kirsty married in Warlingham in 1984, and spent much of the late 80's bringing up their two children and doing backing vocals for musical legends such as The Rolling Stones, Van Morrison and Morrissey. The release of "Fairytale", a song about Irish emigration, catapulted Kirsty into the mainstream consciousness but not into fashion, and it wasn't until April 1989 with the release of her album "Kite" that again, observers believed finally the recognition the talented Selsdon lady deserved would be acknowledged. A single "Days" reached number 12 in the charts, but despite featuring much

heralded Smiths guitarist Johnny Marr, that and the 1991 follow-up album "Electric Landlady", including the insanely catchy "Walking Down Madison", both failed to achieve as much as might have been expected. Indeed, her time spent on the outskirts of stardom, never quite making the a-list, compelled the reluctant pop star MacColl to remark that: "I've never been fashionable. But I've never been unfashionable either." It's important to note at this stage the context in which music was evolving. The late 80's and early 90's saw the emergence and eventual chart domination of soappop. Kylie and Jason were huge, ginger geek Rick Astley sold millions, and perhaps more pertinently in MacColl's case, Bros released "When will I be Famous" in 1987. With this in mind, it's hardly surprising that MacColl once remarked: "Pop music has always been my first love...but about 90% of the charts is unlistenable." "Titanic Days", released in 1994, reached an unflattering number 46 in the charts, but did contribute to a

part of the legacy of MacColl. One of the songs on the album - "Soho Square" - was to later provide the inspiration for the memorial bench dedicated to Kirsty in, yes, Soho Square. In 1995, a retrospective album entitled "Galore" was released, featuring amongst others a cover of Lou Reed's "A Perfect Day" with laid-back lothario and Lemonheads singer, Evan Dando. The song peaked at number 6 in the charts, hanging around the top 40 for 26 weeks in total, success in her professional life marred by the break-up of her marriage around the same period. MacColl embraced a more latin feel in her music in the late 90's, spending time in Cuba and Brazil, which led to the release of her final album "Tropical Brainstorm". The album was highly acclaimed, linking MacColl's instinctive feel for pop melody, and the perceptive urbanity of her lyrics, to sexy Latin rhythms. A tour followed, despite MacColl's self-professed suffering of stagefright, and work had begun on her next album, before the fateful trip to Mexico with her new partner and

two sons that led to her untimely death. Kirsty MacColl died on the 18th of December 2000, in a tragic accident whilst swimming close to the coral island of Cozumel. She was hit by a speedboat owned by the boss of one of Mexico's largest Supermarket chains, in an area designed purely for diving support boats. A campaign to seek justice regarding the accident has been setup by her mother Jean, (more details at www.justiceforkirsty.org). From her first foray into the musical world with Drug Addix, Croydon's answer to the Velvet Underground, to the BBC2 documentary she'd recorded on Cuba, Kirsty MacColl inspired fans, friends and family with her warmth, wit, and passion to embrace all that life offered. Sometime this month you'll probably argue with your partner about seeing the in-laws. You probably won't get the present you wanted either, but when you're sitting in that pub at Christmas, and you hear the twinkling piano intro and Shane MacGowan sing "It was Christmas Eve babe," remember that Jean MacColl and her grandchildren only want one thing for Christmas, and that's justice. Since this article was written Jean MacColl has been forced to give up her campaign. She says “As the Mexicans were closing the case we had no alternative. Wealth and power is a formidable weapon. It needs courage to stand up and be counted but as one resident told me, "I have a wife and children to feed. You don’t argue with Dons."” Jean continues working in a personal capacity to raise public awareness of the key issues in the campaign. More info at www.justiceforkirsty.org. On the 18th December, with ‘Fairytale of New York’ probably playing in the background, please raise a glass to Kirsty MacColl, one of Croydon’s very finest... 21

Ho-Ho-Ho, where all the Christmas films at?! This issue was going to be a festive special. But due to New Year’s Eve’s release date being moved back we’re going with a more family / fantasy / adventure vibe to get you through the xmas period. The Adventures of Tintin It has been said that adaptations of the Tintin books are often doomed. Well, The Adventures of Tintin: The Secret of the Unicorn proves this wrong. Created by some of the most outstanding names in cinema today (just look it up!) this is probably the best current example of a blockbuster smash. Recalling how Tintin and Captain Haddock first came to meet, The Secret of the Unicorn follows our hero in a treasure hunt against time, around the world and against a despicable opponent. Tintin is a tough nut to crack in terms of production, especially in making it appeal to today’s younger audiences, however, that task is accomplished without betraying the comics. Although I personally find the use of ‘motion capture animation’ creepy (they’re like talking waxworks!) it does well in presenting the world of Tintin as neither cartoon nor reality. Both a blessing a fault of this film is its consistency - it’s fun and action-packed from the start, but there aren’t really any sequences that stand out from the rest. I don’t want to slander this film however, as any criticism is miniscule. A good old-fashioned unapologetic action-adventure movie, The Adventures of Tintin is an all-round winner for all ages.

Immortals You ready for a ‘swords and sands’ epic?! Brought to the screen by the producers of 300, Immortals is perhaps the most surprising film this month. The trailer is certainly nothing to go by. Immortals is a liberal (and I mean very liberal, verging on cheekiness) account of the myth of Theseus and the Minotaur mixed with the Titanomachy (don’t bother looking it up, it really isn’t important). Nasty piece of work King Hyperion seeks to overthrow the Gods by releasing their rivals, the Titans. Only a chosen one, Theseus!, along with a magical bow can defeat him, apparently. Visually, Immortals is uniquely impressive, like an oil painting come to life, and the fight scenes are ridiculously gory, both of which combined make for some spectacular moments. However, in between there is an awful lot of faffing about as the film plods along like an ancient road movie. Furthermore the acting is far too hammy, even for a film of this genre. Immortals is also unbelievably brutal, not just in violence but in morale, making you feel sadistically giddy and somewhat depressed at the same time, which, weirdly, is a great cocktail, but ultimately makes it difficult to engage with the film.

The Three Musketeers So this is the film we’ve chosen to replace New Year’s Eve - was it worth it? The latest incarnation of The Three Musketeers follows roughly the usual story - light-hearted swashbuckling adventure. I think the kindest thing to say about this film is it’s not as bad as you’ll expect it to be, but don’t get me wrong, it’s still pants. With dreams of becoming a musketeer, D’Artagnan finds himself drawn into a secret mission to undo the cardinals’ evil plans to frame the queen and seize the throne. Teaming up with the legendary three musketeers, this is D’Artagnan’s trial by fire. If you take off your thinking cap you may actually enjoy this film - the intensely vibrant colours and finely choreographed use of 3D make it aesthetically stunning, but the cast and acting of our heroes, who couldn’t be any more soulless, is atrocious. But the saddest thing is the unnecessary attempts to jazz things up with absurd fight scenes and sci-fi technologies (I mean an airship?! Come on!). The creators’ assumption seeming to be that either the novel wasn’t good enough on its own merits or audiences are too dumb to appreciate it: A huge error on both accounts.

Arthur Christmas Obligatory Christmas film! Yey! Sadly this species seems to be getting rarer - in fact , Arthur Christmas, a joint British/American animated effort , is the only festive film out this year. Boasting a stellar cast of British actors, this film is packed with English charm (there’s even a product placement for the CoOp! I felt a patriotic tear welling up). With the aid of modern technology, Santa is able to do his rounds as usual Christmas Eve, but when one child is missed and the technology is out of bounds, it takes Santa’s well-meaning yet dopey son Arthur to save the day. Arthur’s ditziness is a tad irritating, and the film’s simplicity means you’ll probably get restless towards the end, but this is a children’s film, so let’s cut it some slack! The film has a great supporting cast of eccentric characters, each adding their own enduring nuggets of nonsense: the overwhelmingly dominant character being ‘Grandsanta’. Furthermore the theme of placing Christmas traditionalism in confrontation with its own commercialisation provides the film with an easy-to-digest moral stance. The sharp humour and good nature of Arthur Christmas will make it accessible not just to its target audience, but to all ages this Christmas.

A look ahead to some major and interesting events happening in what looks a very busy 2012... February 2012: • 200th Anniversary of Charles Dickens’ Birth 7th Feb 2012. A wealth of stuff, both here and internationally, happening for this, from new adaptations on the telly, to a major exhibition at The Museum of London and all points in between. I’m a big fan of Dickens but expect to be thoroughly sick of the man by March... More details on everything going on can be found here: www.dickens2012.org • Leap Year An extra day at work on 29th Feb, an extra day before pay-day. Damn you, slightly not perfect hours of the day. It’s a Wednesday, by the way. Marvellous. March 2012: • 25th Anniversary of the Death of Patrick Troughton 28th March 2012. The second Doctor (and decorated war hero, noted character actor and practical joker). Let’s all reverse the polarity as a mark of respect. • 100th Anniversary of the Death of Scott of the Antarctic 29th March 2012. Noted explorer who attempted to lead the first expedition to the Antarctic. Unfortunately, when they arrived, they found a Norwegian team had beaten them to it. They started the 1,500 km journey back. Scott died of starvation and exposure in the expedition’s tent on 29 March 1912. The team were in fact only 20 km from a prearranged supply depot. Eight months later, a search party found the tent, the bodies and Scott's diary. They don’t make people like Scott and Oates anymore. Raise a glass to some incredibly brave men.

April 2012: • 100 Year Anniversary of the sinking of The Titanic 14th April 2012. 100 years ago today, the ‘unsinkable’ White Star Liner Titanic sank after hitting an iceberg in the Atlantic. A raft of events will be ‘celebrating’ the centenary, including a service in Belfast, where she was built, programmes on the BBC and exibitions. More details from here: www.the-titanic.com • 100th Anniversary of the Death of Bram Stoker 20th April 2012. Well, we say ‘death’ who knows? • 350th Anniversary of the Birth of Queen Mary II 30th April 2012. Alright, it’s technically the wrong Mary, but if that’s not an excuse to have a Bloody Mary I don’t know what is. May 2012: • 200th Anniversary of the Birth of Edward Lear 12th May 2012. Artist, illustrator, author, and poet, renowned literary nonsense writer (‘The owl and the pussycat’) in poetry and prose, and populariser of the form of limericks. June 2012: • Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Although it’s actually on the 5th January, extended official celebrations will be held from 2nd-5th June - bank holidays on the 4th and 5th, as far as we’re aware - Gawd Bless ‘Er. A host of events going on hopefully the weather will be nice and we can have a nice street party, like we did in ‘77. All the info can be found here: www.direct.gov.uk/diamondjubilee • Deep-London Magazine 100th issue & 9th Birthday Both June 2012. Sod the Queen, here’s the real big event of the year! Yes, we know the numbers don’t add up, but there have been double issues, riot disrupted issues etc, so it’s just worked out like that. Expect a half-arsed attempt at a party, unless the 6 horses I’ve just backed rock in / I win the lottery, in which case it’ll be bleedin’ enormous! • Euro 2012 Football 8th June -1st July 2012 - Hosted by Poland / Ukraine. Come on the Ities, and, of course, England, and everyone else fairness, you see?

Peter Cook 24

• 100th Anniversary of Alan Turing’s Birth 23rd June 2012. Acknowledged as the father of computing but villified by the establishment for his homosexuality and convicted of gross indecency, Turing eventually committed suicide by eating a poisoned apple. Raise a glass, pat your computer on the head and say - ‘thanks Alan’. Petition to grant Turing a posthumous pardon: https://submissions.epetitions.direct.gov. uk/petitions/23526 July 2012: • Olympic Torch Comes Through Croydon 23rd July 2012. Not sure of the route yet but I’ve got my fire extinguisher ready HEALTH and SAFETY! • London 2012 Olympics 27th July - 12 August 2012. I’d avoid travelling in London if I were you... August 2012: • London 2012 Paralympics 29th August - 9 September 2012. See above. • 50th Anniversary of the Death of Marilyn Monroe 5th August 2012. September 2012: • 100th Anniversary of the Birth of Chuck Jones 21st September 2012. Looney Tunes animator. October 2012: • 125th anniversary of the birth of Le Corbusier 6th October 2012. Look around Croydon, you’ll see his influence all over the shop. November 2012: • 75th anniversary of the birth of Peter Cook 17th November 2012. Tragically born an only twin, Peter Cook was a comedy genius. Fact. I shall be celebrating his birth with many, many drinks and a game of Perudo. December 2012: • The End of the World 21st (or 22nd, or 23rd) December 2012, according to the ‘Mesoamerican Long Calendar’ which counts down, not up, this is where it runs out. Opinion is, as you’d imagine, divided, as to whether this means just the end of one phase of the world or the actual end of the world. I’d suggest, for the Mayans at least, the end of the world happened some time ago. Still, cheery, isn’t it - Happy New Year!

Celebrate the 200th anniversary of the birth of Charles Dickens in the first major UK exhibition for over 40 years. Recreating the atmosphere of Victorian London through sound and projections, you'll be taken on a haunting journey to discover the city that inspired his writings. Paintings, photographs, costume and objects will illustrate themes that Dickens

wove into his works, while rarely seen manuscripts including Bleak House and David Copperfield – written in the author’s own hand – will offer clues to his creative genius. During your visit you'll discover how Dickens' childhood experiences of London, working in a blacking factory whilehis father was locked away in a debtor's prison, were introduced into the stories he wrote. The great social questions of the 19th century, including wealth and poverty, prostitution, childhood mortality and philanthropy, will also be examined, all of which set the scene for Dickens' greatest works. Highlights of the exhibition will include an innovative audio-visual experience bringing to life the desk and chair where Dickens worked on his novels, and a specially commissioned film by one of the UK’s leading documentary filmmakers, William Raban, which will explore the similarities between London after dark today and the night time city described by Dickens over 150 years ago.
