deep online at: www.deep-london.co.uk • www.issuu.com • facebook deep-london • twitter @deep_london Hello there.. ...welcome to issue 82. Blimey, we go away from Croydon on a little holiday for a week and all hell breaks loose; sprog announcements, engagements, secret weddings, splits, people leaving pubs, people opening pubs - all sorts has gone on while our back was turned. See, that’s why we hadn’t had a holiday for seven years, you lot can’t be trusted to act sensibly while we’re away. Well, that’s it, from now on our watchword is vigilance and if, as you never know, might happen, we go away for a week in another seven years, we’ll have someone here on the ball to keep us up to date with all this stuff. Anyway congratulations for all the good stuff, boo to all the bad and yes, it’s good to be back. But onto this issue which is, as you may have noticed from the cover, our annual spooky Halloween type issue thingy, which isn’t particularly spooky or Halloween-y, to be honest, but it’s been a tricky couple of months so you’ll have to bear with us. Nope, we’ve eschewed Halloween this year in favour of the altogether more interesting Mexican Day of the Dead, which doesn’t mean we won’t be donning our devil horns and rocking out at the plethora of Halloween do’s happening around town at the end of the month. Oh, we have got a thing about bats - that spooky enough for you? Elsewhere, we’ve been a bit out of the loop, but we are starting to think about the Deep Christmas party. As regular readers will be more than aware, thinking about it is usually about as far as we get vis a vis preparations, and it’s rare that we actually get round to having the bash, but this year we’re determined to do something, even if it’s just a massive piss-up in a boozer somewhere. Full details may or may not appear next month, or the month after. What? We’re BUSY people you know - this kind of quality rubbish doesn’t write itself. Anyway, that’s about it, but just before we go and have a lie down in a darkened room, this: As the clocks go back at the end of October and the nights draw in, I’d urge anyone whose day needs brightening up to visit http://doiop.com/c768 and read the letter of note therein, the explanantion of which is at the top of the web page. It shed a little shaft of light onto my day, hope it does yours. Until next month, when no doubt Christmas will be careening full tilt towards us from every shop doorway, have a spooky Halloween, a skeletal Day of the Dead and a safe yet noisy bonfire night (always remember the fireworks code, as told to by Blue Peter, and keep those pets indoors, kids, they don’t like it). Or, Good evening Ladies and Gentlemen and welcome to the Mexican Day of the Dead...

For the first two days of November a sweet-smelling cloud of copal incense hangs over most of Mexico. The Day of the Dead is being celebrated. Nominally this is the Christian feast of All Saints’ and All Souls’, but it is celebrated in Mexico as nowhere else in the Catholic world. The Mexican festival of Todos Santos (All Saints’) also called Día or Días de or de los Muertos (Day or Days of the Dead), is the most important celebration of the year, especially in rural areas, where the preparations in anticipation of the event are a

Museum, which is where I first heard about the thing, through a friend who was a curator at the BM and who found it, as it is, a fascinating event. Essentially, the Mexican Day of the Dead has its roots in ancient Indian culture, distorted through the wine-glass of Catholicism into a big old party for two days of the year when the dead are in contact with the living, not in a spooky ‘wooOOoo, I’m haunting you’ kind of way, more in a ‘well hello, long time no see, you look great, have you lost weight? Let’s have a fiesta!’

“The Day of the Dead is a big old jolly annual family reunion. It just happens that some of the family are dead...” major preoccupation for most of the year. “Celebrations at Christmas and Easter are also of note but less distinctive in form. Only the festivals celebrated in honour of local patron saints display some of the same intensity and devotion evident on the Day of the Dead, perhaps because the saints themselves are regarded as lesser deities who intercede with God. The dead too ultimately achieve this semi-divine status in the folk-Catholicism of Mexico. As intermediaries they can intervene on behalf of the living, either with the Christian God or, as among some Indian groups, with divinities that have their origins in pre-Hispanic religion.” So begins the book ‘The Skeleton at the Feast’, by Elizabeth Carmichael and Chlöe Sayer, one of the definitive books on the Mexican Day of the Dead (even the introduction is better than most other books on the subject), written in the early 90s to accompany a major exhibition at The British

kind of way. It’s a jolly annual family reunion in every way, except that some of the family are dead. Our Halloween may be fun, in a macabre way, laughing at the darkness, but this is a genuine celebration of people who’ve gone somewhere else popping back to say hello. Carmichael and Sayer go on, “The Day of the Dead in Mexico is essentially a private or family feast. It has a public aspect at community level, but the core of the celebration takes place within the family home. It is a time of family reunion not only for the living but also the dead who, for a few brief hours each year, return to be with their relatives in this world. “As a time of reunion, there is nothing sombre or macabre about the event: The returning souls do not bring the odour of death and the grave with them, but come as spirits who have returned from another world, which for many Mexican Indians is very much like this one. These worlds of the living and the dead exist in a state of 4

permanent interaction.” As celebrated today, Todos Santos has, in some major cities, become a tourist event - hugely colourful papier mache skeletons and flowers are put out, people dress up and have a rare old time raging against the dying of the light, but in rural areas, away from the tourist trails, it remains an obligation deeply felt graves are tended, food is put out in preparation for the dead visitors, sugar skulls are made. But, whichever version you prefer, there remains at the core an ancient tradition which ‘informs and invigorates every kind of manifestation of the event and which has so far defied debasement’. Halloween, schmalloween, this is far more life (and death) affirming and thought-provoking - as Carmichael and Sayer quote Mexican scholar Octavio Paz to point out; “...death revenges us against life, stripping it of all its vanities and pretensions and showing it for what it is, some bare bones and a dreadful grimace... Skulls made of sugar or tissue paper, painted skeletons hung with fireworks, our popular representations of death always mock at life; they are the affirmation of the nothingness and insignificance of human existence. We decorate our houses with skulls and on the Day of the Dead we eat bread in the form of bones and enjoy the songs and jokes in which bald death has the laughs; but all this swaggering familiarity does nothing to rid us of the question we all have to ask: ‘what is death?’” (1959) ‘The Skeleton at the Feast: The Day of the Dead in Mexico’, Elizabeth Carmichael and Chlöe Sayer, 1991, British Museum Press. ...and celebrate Mexican Day of the Dead with Ferrara’s fabulous chilli con carne recipe...

W

e were going to show you how to make traditional Mexican sugar skulls, but it’s a gigantic faff unless you’ve got a mould, which we haven’t, so we’ll do this instead. This recipe, by the way, is renowned in Deep circles, so count yourselves privileged that we’re sharing it with you... NB: 1) This recipe makes a LOT of chilli, so make sure you have a very large pan. It’ll easily serve four people, or two people for two days, or one for about 4 or 5 days, depending on how much of a pig you are. Happily, if you let it cool in the pan then reheat it the next day, or the day after, it gets better and better. You can also freeze the leftovers if required. 2) All these measurements are the actual recipe, but we tend to be a bit more vague with the spices, generally bunging in a bit more experimentation is the key! 3) The reason this chilli’s so good is the big chunks of meat in it, but you can leave them out and just use mince, if you’re a heathen. 4) To get the best results when using chunks of meat, cook the chilli for as long as humanly possible. I usually start mine before lunch, giving it a good 4 or 5 hours to cook. That way when you eat it the meat just falls apart - lovely. 5) Also, I usually leave out the kidney beans just because I can’t stand the bloody things, but that’s up to you. You will need: • 225g (8oz) tin of kidney beans (optional) • salt and pepper • 2 onions * 2 garlic gloves • 2 peppers, green, red, orange, whatever colour you like. • 2 large tins chopped tomatoes • knob of butter 6

• 250g lean beef mince • 250g beef steak cut into chunks (braising steak, rump steak, any cut that bears long, slow cooking) ª 2 tsp chopped oregano ª good pinch dried cumin • 2 tbsp bisto beef stock powder (gravy granules) ª 0.5 - 2 tsp chilli powder * 2 tbsp tomato puree Method: • Drain the kidney beans ª Peel and chop the onions and garlic ª Core and dice the peppers • Heat the butter in a large dish, fry the onions and garlic until pale golden brown. * Add the meat, stir over a low heat for a few minutes til browned * Add the rest of the ingredients but only add half a teaspoon of chilli at this point * Bring the liquid to the boil, stir well and taste * Add 1 level teaspoon of chilli powder (or some fresh chilli if you want) along with some salt and pepper

• Cover the pan and simmer for about half an hour * Taste the mixture and add more chilli if desired * Place covered dish in preheated oven at about 160c Gas mark 4/5 for a couple of hours or as long as possible. * Check the amount of liquid in the dish towards the end of the cooking time and add water with beef stock if it looks to dry. * Serve with rice or nachos or whatever you want, and top with a bit of sour cream if you want to. If you have leftovers and want to use them the next day, let the pan cool naturally. When it’s cool, bung it in the fridge. To reheat, simply put on the hob and heat through for about 30mins - make sure it’s piping hot before eating. I’ve cooled and reheated one of these chillis 3 times over 3 days to no ill effect - if anything it just gets tastier. If it goes a bit dry, add some water, or even a bit of red wine. Enjoy!

Keeping Tabs. . .

Petal Dunwoody, with knife and fork in hand, visits Croydon’s newest bar/restaurant...

H

ere at Deep Towers we always view the opening of a new venture with a mix of optimism and scepticism, and so it was when we saw the old CRO bar (nee Wig and Pen) in St George’s Walk being done up a couple of months back, after about 10 years of laying empty. Being the standard bearers of all things positive about Croydon, however, optimism usually wins out (except where Brannigans etcs are concerned), so we were delighted to meet up with Mark, one of four enterprising young Croydon boys who are now head honchos of the newly opened Taberners Lounge Bar, and even more delighted to taste some of the great food they’re offering... Firstly, the decor. Don’t get me wrong, I liked the CRO bar, but looking at that interior now, what were they thinking? Happily, the Tabs lads have got rid of the lurid carpet and colour scheme, replacing it with contemporary chocolate hues, making the whole place look cleaner and sharper, although they have kept the old chandelier ceiling light fixtures, which is good as they always were rather marvellous (in fact we wanted to nick them when CR0 shut down). Next up, the ambience, and it turns out this is something Mark feels very strongly about. As he says, Taberners is the result of "Four home grown gents from Croydon taking a brave leap of faith and going out on a limb.” They’ve put their own money, time and passion into this project. The bar is completely independent, not tied to any brewery, so they have the freedom to develop as they go along, seeing what works and what doesn’t. Mark is also passionate about music and keen to get an eclectic mixture of stuff going on. They’ve recently got a PA system, so are now actively looking for bands to play in the bar, as well as having regular DJs and other events (see listings). He’s been researching, visiting places like the Oval, and says that’s exactly the sort of friendly, musical vibe they want. In fact, their remit is to create a "home to delicious food and drink, accompanied by an eclectic sense of music style". Which brings us on to the food. We

had a quick chat with Gordon the chef, 8

whose philosophy is “Good, clean, well cooked food with a twist of the chef’s personality. And, of course, happy clients!”. We tried the food, and can report that indeed we were very happy clients - it’s delicious. The menu is high end brasserie modern British cooked with passion. Gordon’s a classically trained, experienced chef - the list of high profile chefs he’s rubbed shoulders with is staggering - who’s cooked at the Dorchester, the Savoy and other high end London eateries as well as in Dubai and Qatar, and he’s been doing events like the Cheletneham Gold Cup for the last 12 years. He was persauded to work at Taberners as he felt it fitted with his desire to feel the buzz, to be close to the people eating his food and to have a sense of family with everyone involved, including the bar staff, most of whom many of us will recognise from other pubs around town. Scepticism is part of the way of life in Croydon, but the Taberners chaps have put their money where their mouths are, the least you can do is take your mouth and your money and give Croydon’s newest venture a try...

y ‘here’, we do not mean the Whitgift Centre on a Saturday afternoon, wherein terrifyingly forthright ladies do prowl the bargain bins, but rather the much underrated Museum of Croydon, who are currently running an exhibition called ‘Dragon Tales’ - aimed at families and young kids - which looks at all things dragonesque. Combining hands-on activities with depictions of dragons in Chinese and world mythology, the exhibition explores depictions of dragons, the myths that surround the and the stories told about these fantastic beasts. So far so what, you may be thinking, but there’s a bit of a coup going on here, as alongside the Museum of Croydon's own exceptional collection of Chinese ceramics (more than 200 amazing pieces on display in the Riesco Gallery, covering nearly 4000 years of Chinese history, and including grave goods, religious statues, wine and tea cups, animals and all sorts), they’ve managed to secure a quartet of stunning pieces from The British Museum which form the centrepiece of the exhibition - two of which can be seen on the left here. As with most Museum of Croydon exhibitions, the whole thing is free to get into and, although aimed at families - and specifically at kids under 5, with interactive, hands on activities including games, story books and trails - we’ll definitely be going along to have a look. Our only regret is that we have no kids to drag along so that we can have a go at the wide range of activities going on throughout to accompany the exhibition, from storytelling to paper-cutting to dragon toy-making - bah! Anyone got any ankle-biters we can borrow? There are also some events for adults, including talks from curators at The British Museum and Bonhams, coming up in December. Pretty much all of this stuff is free too - check the listings section for details of what’s happening in October / November. And even if Dragons are not your thing, keep your eye on Croydon Museum from now on as this exchange forms the start of what is hoped to be a long-term partnership with the British Museum, so expect more amazing artefacts heading down here in the future. As Rob Shakespeare, museum & heritage manager at Croydon Council, says: “The project is a fantastic opportunity for us to work with the British Museum. It brings stunning objects from their collections down to Croydon, and will really raise awareness of our existing treasures. We’re looking forward to introducing a whole new audience to what we have on offer.” So, if you thought the only dragons in Croydon were the ones bashing you out of the way in Primark, we suggest you get down to the museum, with or without kids in tow, and have a look at something possibly less scary (and in some cases, less old) but definitely a lot more enlightening.

ello again, and we start this month with this: Graeme & Fiona have left the building. That’s right, Croydon’s finest landlords, they of The Oval Tavern are calling it a day. We’re gutted, but all good things must come to an end, and we wish them nothing but the very best for the future. As of going to print we’re not sure when their last day is, but we’ve been asked to tell you that no, The Oval is NOT closing, and that the new managers are committed to carrying on with the live music which helped to make the place the fantastic boozer it was, and will hopefully remain. More news on all of this next month. In the meantime, cheers Graeme and Fiona, it’s been a blast! In music news, our huge congratulations to local singer Sumudu, who was chosen as Caffe Nero’s artist of the month for September (More info on this strand: www.caffenero.com) Sumudu says of herself, “I'm a new artist; a Folk/Country Singer-Songwriter living in Coulsdon (originally from Barnsley). People tell me that I'm pretty unusual because although I was born in the UK I am of Sri Lankan descent and I guess there just aren't many Asian girls doing the kind of music that I'm doing – when I played the Cornbury Festival in July I was told by a very enthusiastic Country fan that I’m “the Asian Alison Krauss” – which I really liked and I suppose it’s probably the easiest and strangest way to describe me! “I was discovered by Kipper (Stings producer) while working on a film soundtrack that he was producing. He wanted to make an album with me (which was very exciting in itself) so I gave him my demo of the songs I'd been writing and we started recording it in January this year. “I was singing at the Bedford in Balham one night and was spotted by a music scout for Caffe Nero and he approached me to do the tour.” Described by the BBC as “...quite simply an outstanding talent... a voice like honey” you can check out a couple of tunes and buy her new album

‘Waiting For You’ (just £10 +p&p) at www.myspace.com/sumudu. You can also catch Sumudu live this month on 17th October at 4pm at the Sutton Music Centre, 35 St Nicholas Way, Sutton SM1 1JB and on 1st November at 7.30pm at The Bedford, Balham, 77 Bedford Hill, London SW12. More dates on the myspace page too. Catch her before she gets HUGE! In sports / telly news, fantastically, Yates’ Wine Bar have gone and got themselves some 3D screens! and will be showing any sports that are broadcast in 3D on them. We’ve had a look at a couple of music videos on the system and it’s pretty damn cool, so if you want to try it, get yourself down there and be, well, amazed. Great stuff. Food now, and news reaches us that the biggest restaurant in Britain is about to open (in November) on the Purley Way. ‘Cosmo’, (I’m annoyed about this, it’s the name of my dog) will offer guests a choice of more than 300 dishes cooked by up to 50 chefs in a 22,000

Sumudu

sq ft restaurant welcoming in up to 800 customers a day. Diners will be able to taste "all the world on the plate", according to the restaurant's owners, with dishes from China, India and Japan along with European menus. Crikey. More info: www.cosmo-restaurants.co.uk In other news, plans are afoot to close Streatham Ice Rink. They are building a new one, but want to close the old one before it’s ready, moving to a temporary home in Brixton in the meantime. No-one seems particularly happy about this state of affairs, and there’s a petition to stop it. If you want to sign, you can find a link to the petition on the Deep-London facebook fan page, or find it here: www.petitionbuzz.com/petitions/ savestreathamskating. Adventures in Botany:

A

vocado: Having bought and scoffed an avocado last week, the Deep-Shed has decided to propagate it, and therefore be awash with avocados in, ooh, about 10 years. So far we’ve done Step 1: Find a ripe avocado. Avocado pits are most likely to grow if they come from a ripe fruit. When you eat the avocado pear, clean off the pit and then soak it for 48 hours in warm water. If you can keep the water warm (in a propagator or on top of a heater), then the pit will grow more quickly. And now we’re doing Step 2, which says: Find the top. Most avocado pits are egg-shaped, with the bottom broader than the top. Some are rounder, but the top is always smooth and the bottom, wrinkled (c’est la vie). Find a container. If you want to see the roots grow, you will need a clear container, such as a tumbler or a jar. 'Plant' your pit. To see the roots grow, you need to suspend the pit above water. Find 3 or 4 toothpicks or hair grips and push them into the pit gently, until they will just support its weight. Then fill the container with warm water so that the bottom of the pit just touches the water. This, however is Deep Towers, so we have no toothpicks or tumblers. What we do have, just hanging around the place, are some cocktail unbrellas and a pint glass, so we’ve improvised, below.

Now we have to keep it warm. (The ideal temperature is around 70F. At this temperature, the pit should start to grow in around 10 days. At cooler temperatures, it can take 5 weeks), and keep the water topped up so that the pit is just touching it. Apparently the first sign of life will be root growth. Only when the roots have started to grow will the pit send out a shoot. If the water goes cloudy and starts to smell before this happens then your pit wasn't fertile to begin with, and you should start again with a fresh pit. We expect you all to be dangling avocado pits over water by next month, when we’ll have news on how ours is doing, and what to do next. Bet you can’t wait...

Watch The Skies! With Astronomy Corner. Things to look for this month: Mid October: The comet Hartley 2 will be visible with binoculars just under the constellation Cassiopiea (‘w’ shaped, to the left of Orion’s Belt). Also, the red star ‘Mira’ will be at its brightest for a year - it can be found just below the constellation Pisces. 31st October - 3.15am-ish: The moons Ganymede and Europa will be visible (with binoculars) passing across the face of Jupiter. 1st week of November: A meteor shower wil be happening just above the constellation Taurus. Apparently it won’t be very metoer-heavy, but there may well be ‘fireball’ incidents. To locate the constellations and for more astronomy info visit: www.popastro.com

What to plant now: Outoor Vegetables: Winter Garlic Variety: Early Wight (buy bulbs online from www.thompson-morgan.com £3.99 for 2 large bulbs) Sowing: Garlic is grown from the individual cloves. Each clove will produce one plant with one bulb, which may in turn contain up to twenty cloves. Choose a planting site that gets plenty of sun and where the soil is not too damp - otherwise the clove will rot.. Plant cloves individually, upright and about 1” (25 mm) under the surface. Plant the cloves about 4” (100 mm) apart. Rows should be about 18” (450 mm) apart. Harvesting: As garlic reaches maturity, the leaves will brown & die (May/June). This is the time to harvest. If you harvest too early the cloves will be very small, too late and the bulb will have split. Proper handling of garlic after it's been picked is as important as looking after it while growing. It's essential that garlic is dried properly, or it’ll rot. Hang bulbs up in a cool, dry place. After a week or so, take them down and brush the dirt off gently - don't wash the bulbs. Outdoor Flowers: Crocus Variety: Crocus Sativus (Saffron Crocus) Grow your own saffron (the most expensive spice in the world and that which Croydon is named after - FACT!) This autumn-flowering crocus is named after its three long, deep-red stigmas, which are cultivated commercially for colouring and flavouring food (see pic). Growing Instructions: To provide the conditions in which it thrives plant the bulbs in an area of full sunlight in naturalistic drifts 10-15cm (4-6in) deep in gritty, well-drained soil. You can also plant them in your lawn (do not cut the lawn until after the leaves have died back). Flowering period: Oct and Nov.

Tooth and Claw:

Release The Bats, Release The... BATS!

We here at Deep-Towers, especially those of us in the Shed, are quite fond of animals. We’ve regaled you with tales of Foxy-Nibbler and the WindowMounted-Bird-Feeder, and done a whole section called ‘Animals Are Our Friends’. So, with winter approaching, and things needing feeding, here’s a brief bit of advice. Also, we’ve discovered it’s almost impossible to stop squirrels nibbling our nuts, but that’s ok, we quite like it.

It’s Halloween, what did you expect us to do? Bats are amazing animals, and an important part of our natural environment. There are 18 species of bat in the UK (17 of which are known to be breeding here), all of which are protected by law because their numbers have decreased so dramatically, partly due to a loss of roost sites and a decline in insect-rich habitats. You can help these fascinating little mammals by making your garden bat-friendly or by making new roost sites for them. Bats rely on shelter away from predators and a constant source of water and insects to survive. To enable UK bat populations to flourish, we need a

Birds: Put out nest-boxes and feed tables etc now so birds get used to them. Keep them filled and clean, throw out any uneaten food and fill with fresh regularly. Bird foods: If there are tasty bits of fruit or nuts in your bird food try not to eat them yourself (yes, Mik, try not to eat them...). Depending on what birds you want to attract there are a range of foods you can put out. See www.rspb.org.uk for their guidelines or we suggest you pop into Dabners on Surrey Street who know their stuff. Foxes: We here at Deep-Shed like our foxy-friend, so we chuck out leftovers for him when we have them (he has a penchant for kebabs and singapore noodles), but whether you love or loathe them, you can find out how to look after or deter foxes here: www.thefoxwebsite.org Hedgehogs: Hedgehogs are believed to be declining and have been listed as a species of conservation concern. You can encourage them into your garden by providing them with food and a home. In the Garden Centre (old lido) off the Purley Way they sell a thing called, excellently, a ‘Hogitat’. You can find more info on helping the hedgehog at The British Hedgehog Preservation Society www.britishhedgehogs.org.uk

Shed Of The Month

Roosts: Bat-boxes are artificial roosts, made of wood or sometimes concrete which can be attached to trees, buildings etc to encourage bats. You ideally need about 4 boxes, placed at least 5m above ground level. In October, bats look for suitable hibernation sites, so get a batbox now if you’re going to BUT! Bats need time to find and explore new homes and it may be several years before boxes have residents – be patient! To see if a bat box is your bag, visit www.batbazaar.co.uk Local Bat Spotting: South Norwood Country Park - Pipistrelles, noctules and Daubenton's present, particularly over the lake. Beddington Park - Pipistrelle, noctule and serotine bat - a very good site. Wimbledon Common - Pipistrelles, noctules, Daubenton's, brown longeared and serotines present. diverse range of sites available where bats can forage and roost. Bats can be found in grassland, farm land and near waterways and ponds - so long as there are sufficient structures to roost in and peripheral wood, hedgerow or manmade linear features for their protection and navigation. Bats are also becoming more reliant on urban habitats, where they roost in buildings and forage in nearby wooded parks and gardens (for example, on an evening at The Oval Tavern garden, bats can regularly be seen flitting about overhead). Habitat choice can be species-specific and some bats will journey further out to seek the habitat they prefer. Encouraging Bats: By which we don’t mean standing around applauding and complimenting them on their flappy wings, we mean helping them out with habitat and whatnot.

variety of flowers, especially pale ones that attract insects at dusk, when the bats are out hunting. Bats also love water, so if you have a pond, you’re more likely to get bats.

Gardens: A garden that is good for insects is good for bats, as all species of British bat eat only insects such as midges, moths, mosquitoes and beetles. When planting, try to include a

So You Think You’ve Got Bats?: Quite possibly, but how can you be sure? One way might be to purchase a Bat Detector, which pick up their high frequency calls and are sophisticated enough that, with practice, different species can be identified. Unfotunately, bat detectors aren’t especially cheap, starting at around £50, so before you invest, it may be worth going to a few bat watching events with more experienced people to see what they are using and try them out. Contact your Local Bat Group (www.londonbats.org.uk or www.surreybats.org.uk) for details of events and for any bat detector training sessions they may be arranging. And that’s about it - more detailed information about all things batty can be found at www.bats.org.uk, a site run by bats, for bats. Not really, it’s the Bat Conservation Trust, a great site which singularly fails to mention how spectacularly ugly some species of bat are, but there you go, face only a mother could love etc, at least we managed to find a pretty one for the photo. Remember, a bat is for life, not just for Halloween - please, don’t have nightmares and - happy batting!

osh it only seems to be two weeks since I penned (or keyed) the last entry in my diary of desperation – and on checking my diary, it is only two weeks. Hence the desperation. In the mistaken idea that inspiration could be acquired by a quick trip to the nearest drinking establishment I dragged Edith down to the Croham Arms for a pint or two of Pride and a counselling session with the lovely bar staff. Epic fail. I still have no inspiration but I have acquired some terrible innuendo jokes and a set of badly behaved fingers which keep putting the letters in the wrong order. I’ve been trying to get out of Croydon a bit recently, for reasons best known to people who stay in Croydon too long. Those of you that paid attention in your history lessons at school will know that I hail from Maryport, a drab town too far north for anybody in Croydon to worry or care about. I make it a priority not to dwell for long on the frankly disappointingly boring first sixteen years of my life there, but I experienced an alarming sense of déjà vu on a recent outing to the Norfolk town of Great Lardmouth, sorry, Yarmouth. Educationally, the locals weren’t quite ‘Maryport Standard’ – Visitor: “Could you direct me to the nearest chip shop please?” Local: “Eeey, you want the Quay (pronounced quay) lass.” However, what they made up for in grammar, Yarmouthians sadly lost in

presentation. Having easily sifted the holidaymakers from the local populace, it is obvious that the men are suffering from a long-standing inbreeding habit giving them a curious cross-eyed, Shreklike appearance and the women have spent far too long at the Quay (or in this case the market) checking the quality of the (admittedly rather good) local chips, as it is hard to find one under 18 stone. It is difficult to avoid being mown down by the plethora of mobility scooters ridden by those too hefty to use their legs and there was a nasty incident in Tesco when “Elvis 1” tried to sideswipe me in the pastry isle in a battle over the last packet of Atora. My next foray out was an attempt by me and Edith to cheer up poor Bert who was worn to a frazzle campaigning against the closure of the Pop-In “up the Parade”. We hid his placard behind the tanning shop and frogmarched him up to London for a day in the smoke. We started off with a picnic in Hyde Park which quickly degenerated into a speed-hobble to the nearest tree to shelter from the torrential rain. We were immediately joined by Tufty, the sweetest baby squirrel in the world. Edith and I unfortunately had no nuts but the poor thing started sniffing around Bert’s sausage and climbed up Bert’s trouser leg in an attempt to reach the object of its desires. Fortunately the sun came out and we beat a hasty retreat to the Tyburn at Marble Arch.

squirrel!

You may remember from last month, my unfortunately habit of unwittingly frequenting the men’s toilets. Since then I’ve been running a mini-poll of such establishments and can now announce that the Tyburn has the Best Men’s Toilets in the World. Not only are they clean and inviting (and the soap dispensers work) but they have a marvellous fountain as a centrepiece (on checking the quality of the ladies, the best they could do was a mermaidy sink). Unfortunately it became necessary to leave the pleasures of the Tyburn after the staff objected to Edith munching on her egg and pilchard sandwiches at the bar, so we sojourned to the Intrepid Fox for some proper music and shit beer. At the other end of the scale, I have awarded the Fox the accolade for the worst toilets in London. Even the grafitti’s crap. There was an entertaining moment when Bert insisted on reporting to the manager that someone had stolen his tub of mini sausages, but they were quickly reunited with their rightful owner and a riot was averted. Anyway my pets. The barley wine’s kicking in now and I must get my beauty sleep. Adios and I’ll catch you at the bar…. Auntie May returns next month.
